[1:10] Speaker 1: A good neighbor.
[1:12] Speaker 3: In our last story, Jesus taught on how much we
[1:16] Speaker 3: are to forgive one another, that God forgives us to
[1:19] Speaker 3: the measure we forgive others. In this story, we will
[1:24] Speaker 3: learn about the story of the Good Samaritan as inspired
[1:29] Speaker 3: by the Gospels.
[1:33] Speaker 1: Hi, everyone. It's Julianne Thompson, guest hosting for Julia Jeffress
[1:37] Speaker 1: Sadler here. Welcome back for another story from the Kids
[1:40] Speaker 1: Bible in a Year podcast. What does it mean to
[1:44] Speaker 1: love your neighbor as yourself? That's what we're talking about today.
[1:48] Speaker 1: And as always, Jesus has the perfect story to help
[1:52] Speaker 1: us understand. Let's listen in.
[1:57] Speaker 3: One day, a man who knew the law asked Jesus,
[2:02] Speaker 3: What must I do so I can live forever? Jesus said,
[2:08] Speaker 3: You are an expert. What does the law say you
[2:12] Speaker 3: should do? He replied, Jesus replied, Do that and.
[2:27] Speaker 1: You will live.
[2:29] Speaker 3: But the man was confused and secretly wanted to justify himself.
[2:35] Speaker 3: And so he asked, Who exactly is considered to be
[2:40] Speaker 3: my neighbor? So Jesus told a story and said, There
[2:45] Speaker 3: was a man who was traveling from Jerusalem to Jericho,
[2:48] Speaker 3: and he was beaten up. The people took all his
[2:51] Speaker 3: clothes and left him lying on the ground. The people
[2:55] Speaker 3: who attacked him left him very wounded, and he was
[2:59] Speaker 3: not able to walk. It looked like he was almost
[3:02] Speaker 3: dead from how badly they had beaten him up. A
[3:05] Speaker 3: priest walked by this man and crossed over to the
[3:08] Speaker 3: other side of the road. He did not even stop
[3:12] Speaker 3: to help him. A short time later, a Levite man
[3:15] Speaker 3: also saw him but continued to walk past him. Similar
[3:20] Speaker 3: to the priest, he did not offer to help the
[3:22] Speaker 3: man at all. Then, There was a Samaritan man who
[3:26] Speaker 3: saw him and felt very sad for him. So he
[3:30] Speaker 3: cleaned his cuts, covered his wounds, and placed him on
[3:34] Speaker 3: a donkey. He took the injured man to an inn
[3:38] Speaker 3: and continued to take care of him. He asked the
[3:42] Speaker 3: innkeeper to keep an eye on the man. He paid
[3:45] Speaker 3: the innkeeper and said he would pay more when he returns.
[3:49] Speaker 3: He wanted to make sure that he covered all the
[3:52] Speaker 3: expenses that it would take to get this man feeling better. So,
[3:57] Speaker 3: which man from this story was a neighbor to the
[4:00] Speaker 3: injured man? The man who knew the law replied, the
[4:05] Speaker 3: one who took care of him and helped him. Jesus said,
[4:10] Speaker 3: go and be like that man. Whoo!
[4:19] Speaker 1: That was another powerful story that teaches us so much
[4:23] Speaker 1: about the heart of Jesus. I want to love people
[4:26] Speaker 1: the way he does. Let's unpack the story Jesus told
[4:29] Speaker 1: his friend about a man we call the Good Samaritan.
[4:34] Speaker 1: So we open with a guy who was an expert
[4:36] Speaker 1: in the law coming to visit Jesus. He knew everything
[4:40] Speaker 1: there was to know about being a good person. But
[4:43] Speaker 1: it seems to me like his heart was stirring. He
[4:46] Speaker 1: was smart. had money, a good job, but he knew
[4:50] Speaker 1: there was more to life. Jesus was about to show him,
[4:53] Speaker 1: and there is much more to following him than just
[4:56] Speaker 1: knowing the law. He wants us to live it out.
[5:01] Speaker 1: When this lawyer asked Jesus how to live forever, Jesus
[5:05] Speaker 1: reminded him of what Moses told God's people years and
[5:08] Speaker 1: years before. He said to love God with everything you
[5:12] Speaker 1: have and love others the way you would want to
[5:15] Speaker 1: be loved. Then Jesus told him the story of a
[5:18] Speaker 1: man who was traveling to Jericho and was attacked, beaten, robbed,
[5:22] Speaker 1: and left to die on the side of the road.
[5:25] Speaker 1: The road from Jerusalem to Jericho was a very dangerous
[5:29] Speaker 1: path to take. There were many criminals and robbers along
[5:32] Speaker 1: the way, so this was not unusual. We then heard
[5:36] Speaker 1: Jesus tell of a priest and a Levite, both religious
[5:40] Speaker 1: leaders who should probably care about a fellow Jew, hurt
[5:43] Speaker 1: and bleeding on the side of the road. But what
[5:46] Speaker 1: did they do? They just walked on by. Jesus said
[5:51] Speaker 1: the next person to come by was a Samaritan. Now,
[5:55] Speaker 1: Jews and Samaritans in this day were not friends, not
[5:59] Speaker 1: even close. In fact, for many silly reasons, they hated
[6:05] Speaker 1: each other. They never spoke or had anything to do
[6:08] Speaker 1: with each other. Jews did not even allow Samaritans inside
[6:13] Speaker 1: of the temples. So when Jesus said that a Samaritan
[6:17] Speaker 1: stopped to help a Jew, I'm sure it got this
[6:22] Speaker 1: lawyer's attention. He said that the Samaritan came to where
[6:26] Speaker 1: he was. So in other words, he went out of
[6:29] Speaker 1: his way to go and help. He didn't just stop
[6:32] Speaker 1: where he was. He went to help. Jesus then says
[6:37] Speaker 1: that the Samaritan felt sad for the Jew and had
[6:40] Speaker 1: compassion on him.
[6:42] Speaker 3: Compassion?
[6:43] Speaker 1: That's a word we've heard before that describes the heart
[6:47] Speaker 1: of God. It's another word for love. He felt sad
[6:51] Speaker 1: and didn't want to leave this poor man there to die.
[6:55] Speaker 1: So he cleaned up his cuts with wine and oil,
[6:59] Speaker 1: threw him up over a donkey, and took him to
[7:01] Speaker 1: an inn, which is kind of like a cross between
[7:04] Speaker 1: a hotel and a hospital. He got him settled. gave
[7:08] Speaker 1: him medicine, and paid the innkeeper enough money to take
[7:12] Speaker 1: care of him for two to three weeks. Then it's
[7:16] Speaker 1: as if Jesus looked straight into the heart of this
[7:19] Speaker 1: lawyer when he said, which man in this story was
[7:23] Speaker 1: a neighbor? He knew the answer. It was the Samaritan
[7:26] Speaker 1: who stopped to take care of this Jew he didn't
[7:29] Speaker 1: even know. Jesus was saying, it's good that you know
[7:32] Speaker 1: and understand the law, but the greatest law of all,
[7:36] Speaker 1: is to love God and love people. Are you loving people?
[7:42] Speaker 1: Are you going out of your way to help those
[7:44] Speaker 1: in need? Are you giving your time and money to
[7:47] Speaker 1: someone who.
[7:48] Speaker 2: Is desperate for help?
[7:50] Speaker 1: That's how you show me you love me. And that's
[7:53] Speaker 1: what I desire more than knowing and keeping every law. Today,
[7:58] Speaker 1: let's make sure we aren't like that priest or Levite,
[8:01] Speaker 1: passing by someone who is hurt, needing help, sad, or
[8:05] Speaker 1: having a bad day. only thinking of themselves. Instead, be
[8:10] Speaker 1: like this Samaritan, showing God we love him by the
[8:13] Speaker 1: way we love each other. It's usually not convenient. It's
[8:18] Speaker 1: rarely easy, but it's always worth it. Thanks for listening.
[8:23] Speaker 1: I hope you'll join me next time because we're talking
[8:26] Speaker 1: about three things that were lost but are now found. Oh,
[8:30] Speaker 1: and how to stay out of a pig pen. Yeah,
[8:32] Speaker 1: you heard that right. Always remember, the Bible is the
[8:36] Speaker 1: best story ever told. It's God's story to you, and
