[1:25] Speaker 3: Elijah and the Drought In our last story, Abijah ruled
[1:30] Speaker 3: Judah and repeated the same sins of his father. His
[1:34] Speaker 3: son Asa ruled and for the most part did right
[1:38] Speaker 3: in the eyes of the Lord, but drifted away later.
[1:42] Speaker 3: In this story, we will learn about the prophet Elijah
[1:45] Speaker 3: and how he survived in a time of famine because
[1:49] Speaker 3: of the faithfulness of the widow from Zarephath. As inspired
[1:54] Speaker 3: by 1 Kings.
[1:58] Speaker 1: Hi again, it's Joya Sadler with the Kids Bible in
[2:01] Speaker 1: a Year podcast. I'm so excited you're here with me.
[2:05] Speaker 1: Today we'll hear a story about a woman who had
[2:08] Speaker 1: so little food that she wanted to give up. But
[2:13] Speaker 1: when she shared the little she had with Elijah, God
[2:17] Speaker 1: showed up and gave her exactly what she needed. It's
[2:22] Speaker 1: such a good story. So let's dive in.
[2:28] Speaker 3: Elijah was in Gilead talking to Ahab and said, As.
[2:32] Speaker 4: The God of Israel lives before me as I stand here,
[2:36] Speaker 4: there will be no rain or dew.
[2:39] Speaker 3: For years except for my word. The Lord came to
[2:44] Speaker 3: Elijah and said, Travel.
[2:47] Speaker 4: East and hide by a stream that sets east of
[2:50] Speaker 4: the Jordan. I want you to drink from the brook.
[2:54] Speaker 4: Then I will have the ravens feed you.
[2:57] Speaker 1: Elijah went.
[2:58] Speaker 3: And did as the Lord had said to do. The
[3:01] Speaker 3: ravens brought him bread in the morning, meat and bread
[3:03] Speaker 3: in the night, and he drank from the brook. As
[3:07] Speaker 3: time passed, the brook became dry because there was no
[3:11] Speaker 3: rain in the land. The Lord said to Elijah, Go
[3:16] Speaker 3: to Zarephath.
[3:17] Speaker 4: The land belongs to Sidon. I have told a widow
[3:21] Speaker 4: to feed you when you get there.
[3:23] Speaker 3: Elijah left the brook and went to Zarephath. When he
[3:27] Speaker 3: arrived at the city, a widow was standing there picking
[3:30] Speaker 3: up sticks, so he said to her, Can you bring
[3:34] Speaker 3: me some water in a jar and a piece of bread, please?
[3:39] Speaker 3: She said to Elijah, I do not have bread, just
[3:43] Speaker 3: a handful of flour and a little bit of oil.
[3:46] Speaker 3: I am picking up sticks so I can make one
[3:49] Speaker 3: more meal for my son and me. Elijah replied, Do
[3:53] Speaker 3: not be afraid. Go and make bread, as I said.
[3:58] Speaker 3: Before you do, make a small loaf and bring it
[4:01] Speaker 3: to me.
[4:03] Speaker 4: Then make some for you and your son.
[4:05] Speaker 3: For the God of Israel says, The flour and oil
[4:09] Speaker 3: will not go dry until the Lord sends rain. She
[4:13] Speaker 3: trusted Elijah and did what he said to do. There
[4:17] Speaker 3: was food every day for Elijah, her son, and herself.
[4:22] Speaker 3: The jar of flour never went empty. and the oil
[4:26] Speaker 3: never dried up. As time passed, the son of the
[4:30] Speaker 3: woman who owned the house became very sick. He became
[4:33] Speaker 3: so ill that one day he stopped breathing. The woman
[4:37] Speaker 3: said to Elijah, What do you have against me? Did
[4:42] Speaker 3: you come here to kill my son and remind me
[4:45] Speaker 3: of my sins? Elijah responded to her remark, Give me
[4:50] Speaker 3: your son. The woman gave her son over, and he
[4:54] Speaker 3: took him to his room and laid him on his bed.
[4:58] Speaker 3: Elijah cried out to God, saying, Lord, my God, why
[5:02] Speaker 3: have you caused tragedy over the woman who I am
[5:05] Speaker 3: staying with? He then put himself over the son three
[5:09] Speaker 3: times and cried out to the Lord again, saying, Lord,
[5:14] Speaker 3: let this boy's life return. The Lord heard Elijah's cry,
[5:20] Speaker 3: and the boy's life was restored. Elijah picked him up
[5:24] Speaker 3: and carried him down to his mother and said, Look,
[5:27] Speaker 3: your son is alive. The woman was amazed and said,
[5:32] Speaker 3: You are a man of God, and the word of
[5:36] Speaker 3: the Lord from your mouth is true.
[5:44] Speaker 1: Have you ever felt like you wanted to give up?
[5:47] Speaker 1: Maybe you lost something or someone that you love very much.
[5:52] Speaker 1: Perhaps you were disappointed or sad and think God doesn't
[5:57] Speaker 1: see you. Or worse, you might think God doesn't care.
[6:02] Speaker 1: That's how the widow at Seraphath felt. Her husband was
[6:05] Speaker 1: gone and she had no one to provide for her
[6:09] Speaker 1: or her son. She had to take care of everything
[6:13] Speaker 1: all by herself. Now there was a famine and she
[6:17] Speaker 1: was running out of food. In fact... She only had
[6:21] Speaker 1: enough food for one more meal. She just wanted to
[6:26] Speaker 1: give up. But she didn't know that when she thought
[6:31] Speaker 1: her life was over, God was just getting started. Even
[6:37] Speaker 1: though she felt sad and alone, God saw her. And
[6:42] Speaker 1: he had a beautiful plan to care for her and
[6:46] Speaker 1: her son through Elijah. Do you know that when you
[6:50] Speaker 1: feel sad and alone, God sees you too? The Bible
[6:55] Speaker 1: says he loves you so much that when you cry,
[7:00] Speaker 1: he collects your tears in a bottle. In fact, he
[7:05] Speaker 1: loves you so much that one day there won't be
[7:09] Speaker 1: any more crying at all. He'll wipe away every tear forever.
[7:16] Speaker 1: One of my favorite songs that we sing at church
[7:19] Speaker 1: is No More Night. And it talks about that verse
[7:24] Speaker 1: that says there will be no more night, no more
[7:28] Speaker 1: tears whenever we go to heaven. But until that day,
[7:33] Speaker 1: though you might not see God with your own eyes
[7:36] Speaker 1: when you're sad, you can know that he's taking his big, Huge,
[7:42] Speaker 1: God-sized thumb and wiping your tears away very softly. And
[7:49] Speaker 1: then hugging you with his heart. Just like he did
[7:53] Speaker 1: for the widow when she felt like giving up. Here's
[7:58] Speaker 1: what happened. The king of Israel, King Ahab, was a very, very,
[8:04] Speaker 1: very bad king. And his wife Jezebel was even worse.
[8:10] Speaker 1: Over and over they disobeyed God. And because they were
[8:14] Speaker 1: in charge, they told all the people of Israel to
[8:18] Speaker 1: disobey God too. And the people did it. God knew
[8:23] Speaker 1: living like this would only hurt them. So he used
[8:27] Speaker 1: Elijah to help get their attention. Elijah said, Now you
[8:32] Speaker 1: might think, no rain, woohoo! No rain means no cold,
[8:42] Speaker 1: no wet, no yucky days, no petals, no umbrellas or
[8:46] Speaker 1: mud on our shoes, and no scary thunder or lightning.
[8:51] Speaker 1: But no rain also means there's no water to help
[8:55] Speaker 1: grow apples or grain for bread, and no water for
[8:59] Speaker 1: the animals or the people to drink. That's why the
[9:04] Speaker 1: widow was running out of food. And when Elijah first
[9:08] Speaker 1: asked her for food, she explained, I have just enough
[9:13] Speaker 1: to feed my son and me one more meal. Then
[9:18] Speaker 1: we're going to die. You won't die, Elijah told her.
[9:23] Speaker 1: Just trust God and please make me some bread too.
[9:28] Speaker 1: Now the widow could have been selfish and said, No,
[9:32] Speaker 1: there's not enough food for you. I need to keep
[9:35] Speaker 1: what I have. Or she could have been bossy and said, no,
[9:40] Speaker 1: this problem is your fault. You have to deal with it.
[9:45] Speaker 1: But she didn't. Instead, she trusted God. And though she
[9:49] Speaker 1: probably felt very scared, she chose to share the little
[9:54] Speaker 1: she had with Elijah. And because she did, God did
[9:58] Speaker 1: a miracle. He made sure her food never ran out.
[10:05] Speaker 1: But a while later, the widow's son got sick and died,
[10:10] Speaker 1: and she wanted to give up again. But when she
[10:13] Speaker 1: felt saddest and most alone, God hugged her with his heart.
[10:19] Speaker 1: Then he did another miracle. He brought her child back
[10:25] Speaker 1: to life. Do you remember who else brought a child
[10:29] Speaker 1: back to life? Yes, Jesus. No matter where you see
[10:34] Speaker 1: God working in the Bible, he always shows us his
[10:38] Speaker 1: power is stronger than anything, even death. Life can be
[10:45] Speaker 1: hard sometimes. And if you want to give up, remember
[10:49] Speaker 1: that God never gives up on you. He's just getting started.
[10:55] Speaker 1: He promises us in his word, never will I leave you,
[11:00] Speaker 1: never will I forsake you. That's why you can trust
[11:04] Speaker 1: him like the widow and feel him hug you with
[11:08] Speaker 1: his heart. I'm so happy you joined me today. Come
