[1:42] Speaker 4: Paul on trial. In our last story, the Jews plotted
[1:48] Speaker 4: to kill Paul, but he was sent to the governor, Felix.
[1:52] Speaker 4: In this story, Paul will be accused before Felix and
[1:55] Speaker 4: placed in prison for two years. Festus will take over
[2:00] Speaker 4: as governor, and Paul will ask to appeal his case
[2:03] Speaker 4: to Caesar, as inspired by Acts.
[2:11] Speaker 2: Hi again, friends.
[2:12] Speaker 1: It's Joya here, and welcome back to the Kids Bible
[2:15] Speaker 1: in a Year podcast. Paul is still on trial, but
[2:19] Speaker 1: this might be his strongest sermon ever. He's telling his
[2:23] Speaker 1: story again, trusting God to show him the next step
[2:27] Speaker 1: to take. Listen in.
[2:32] Speaker 4: When they heard that Paul had been sent to Caesarea,
[2:35] Speaker 4: the high priest decided to go there as well. He
[2:38] Speaker 4: came with a few other leaders and a lawyer to
[2:41] Speaker 4: help his case. They gave their case and evidence against
[2:44] Speaker 4: Paul to Felix, the governor. This man is the worst
[2:48] Speaker 4: thing to happen.
[2:49] Speaker 5: To the Jewish people.
[2:50] Speaker 4: He upsets the Jewish people everywhere he goes. Now he
[2:54] Speaker 4: comes to mock us and God.
[2:57] Speaker 5: Paul knew this wasn't true. I didn't do anything that
[3:01] Speaker 5: would make everything they did to me okay. I follow Jesus,
[3:07] Speaker 5: but I don't try and preach to people.
[3:10] Speaker 4: I went to the temple to finish my end of
[3:12] Speaker 4: a deal with God, but a mob appeared and tried
[3:15] Speaker 4: to hurt me.
[3:16] Speaker 5: They should be on trial for trying to kill me.
[3:19] Speaker 5: I have done nothing wrong.
[3:20] Speaker 4: These Pharisees in front of me don't even hate me.
[3:24] Speaker 4: We all believe in the same thing. We both believe
[3:28] Speaker 4: that God can bring people back from the dead. Felix
[3:31] Speaker 4: listened to both of them, but didn't say anything.
[3:35] Speaker 5: Felix thought maybe Paul would give him something if he
[3:38] Speaker 5: let Paul go free.
[3:39] Speaker 4: The governor decided that Paul could go without paying anything
[3:43] Speaker 4: and let him go free. They met a few times
[3:47] Speaker 4: to talk about his journey with Jesus and what it
[3:49] Speaker 4: is like to follow him. Felix looked at Paul, feeling overwhelmed.
[3:54] Speaker 5: I can't make this decision now. I'll do it at
[3:57] Speaker 5: a better time. Two years passed, and Felix was no
[4:01] Speaker 5: longer the governor.
[4:02] Speaker 4: A man named Festus took his place. He wanted to
[4:06] Speaker 4: make the Jewish council happy.
[4:08] Speaker 5: He looked at Paul and asked him, Can you.
[4:11] Speaker 4: Go back to Jerusalem and go back on trial? I'll
[4:15] Speaker 4: face my punishment if I deserve it, but we both
[4:18] Speaker 4: know I'm innocent. I'd rather face Caesar Then go back
[4:22] Speaker 4: to Jerusalem.
[4:23] Speaker 5: Paul told him. Okay, so you'll go to Caesar.
[4:27] Speaker 4: A few days after this happened, King Agrippa and his
[4:30] Speaker 4: sister were coming to visit Festus. They all sat together,
[4:34] Speaker 4: and Festus brought up Paul and what was happening with
[4:37] Speaker 4: his trial. King Agrippa told Festus that he wanted to
[4:41] Speaker 4: hear Paul's case for himself. The next day, Festus called
[4:45] Speaker 4: a large group to gather in his palace. Paul now
[4:48] Speaker 4: stood in front of Festus and King Agrippa. Paul knew
[4:52] Speaker 4: this was his only chance to be seen as innocent.
[4:56] Speaker 4: I'm so glad you're here, King Agrippa, because you know
[5:00] Speaker 4: all the ways of the Jewish people, the ways of
[5:03] Speaker 4: my people. I have always been a Jew, and I
[5:07] Speaker 4: am a Pharisee. I care about following the law. There
[5:11] Speaker 4: was even a time in my life where I killed
[5:14] Speaker 4: and arrested people who followed Jesus.
[5:16] Speaker 5: But one day I was.
[5:17] Speaker 4: Traveling to Damascus, and I was hit by a bright light.
[5:21] Speaker 4: There was this loud voice that asked me why I
[5:23] Speaker 4: was doing this.
[5:24] Speaker 5: I responded, who are you? Are you God? The voice responded,
[5:29] Speaker 5: I am Jesus. I am the one you are trying
[5:32] Speaker 5: to hurt. Stand up. You are now my friend and servant.
[5:37] Speaker 4: You will tell people about me, the Jews and Gentiles.
[5:42] Speaker 5: King Agrippa, I have done everything the Lord asked me.
[5:46] Speaker 4: I tell everyone that Jesus is our Savior wherever I go.
[5:50] Speaker 4: I ask God for forgiveness and I guide people to
[5:53] Speaker 4: do the same thing.
[5:54] Speaker 5: So I don't understand why I am here.
[5:57] Speaker 4: I don't understand why people want me dead when we
[6:01] Speaker 4: believe all the same things. The scripture says that the
[6:05] Speaker 4: Messiah would go through pain, die, and then come back
[6:08] Speaker 4: from the dead.
[6:09] Speaker 5: He would save everyone, even the Gentiles. Festus didn't agree.
[6:15] Speaker 4: Paul, you sound so crazy. You know so much, yet
[6:20] Speaker 4: you sound stupid.
[6:22] Speaker 5: Paul frowned. I am not crazy and I don't lie.
[6:26] Speaker 4: King Agrippa knows that everything I'm saying is true.
[6:30] Speaker 5: King Agrippa has read the scriptures and he believes, don't you?
[6:34] Speaker 4: King Agrippa challenged Paul. Do you think you can convince
[6:39] Speaker 4: me to become a Christian? King Agrippa and Festus spoke
[6:43] Speaker 4: privately and they decided that Paul was innocent and he
[6:46] Speaker 4: wouldn't go to jail. We would set him free if
[6:50] Speaker 4: he hadn't decided to speak to Caesar instead.
[6:53] Speaker 5: So now, we will send him there.
[7:02] Speaker 2: Alright, so what happened here?
[7:04] Speaker 1: As we open, Paul is in Caesarea, standing before a
[7:09] Speaker 1: not-so-great governor named Felix. Let's just say he wasn't really
[7:14] Speaker 1: worried about doing what was right. He was mostly worried
[7:18] Speaker 1: about doing what was best for himself. The Jewish leaders
[7:22] Speaker 1: who wanted Paul arrested were saying all kinds of nice
[7:27] Speaker 1: things about Felix.
[7:29] Speaker 2: You're such a great ruler. You love to give your people.
[7:33] Speaker 1: Peace and prosperity. They knew it wasn't true. This is
[7:37] Speaker 1: called flattery. And the Bible warns us about this in
[7:41] Speaker 1: the Proverbs. It means giving someone compliments that aren't true...
[7:46] Speaker 1: just so you can get what you want. The Bible
[7:50] Speaker 1: says if you see a person who flatters others this way,
[7:55] Speaker 1: run from them. So Paul is accused before the governor
[7:59] Speaker 1: of making everyone upset and causing too many problems. Paul
[8:04] Speaker 1: defends himself not using flattery, but giving them the facts
[8:09] Speaker 1: and proving that he has done nothing wrong. And what
[8:13] Speaker 1: did Felix do? Once again, what he thought was best
[8:17] Speaker 1: for himself. He couldn't let Paul go free because then
[8:22] Speaker 1: lots of people would accuse him of believing this gospel
[8:26] Speaker 1: preached by Paul and they would be mad. But he
[8:29] Speaker 1: couldn't arrest or punish him because there was no.
[8:33] Speaker 2: Proof of any crime. So he decided not to do anything.
[8:38] Speaker 1: He kept him in jail with a little freedom and
[8:41] Speaker 1: allowed Paul's friends to come and see him. Again, Felix
[8:45] Speaker 1: is a great example of the kind of leader you
[8:48] Speaker 1: do not want to be. When you are only worried
[8:52] Speaker 1: about making people like you and not worried about obeying
[8:56] Speaker 1: God and doing what is right, things will always go wrong.
[9:01] Speaker 2: Not to mention, no one will respect you or trust you.
[9:06] Speaker 1: Paul continued to take every opportunity he had to share
[9:10] Speaker 1: the gospel with Felix, and he listened.
[9:13] Speaker 2: But in the end, he did not.
[9:15] Speaker 1: Have the strength to follow Jesus because he was too
[9:18] Speaker 1: afraid of what others would think.
[9:21] Speaker 2: So he said, I'll do it later.
[9:24] Speaker 1: Before we are too rough on Felix, don't we often
[9:29] Speaker 1: do this too? Maybe we know that something we're doing
[9:33] Speaker 1: is wrong, but we think, I'll stop later. I'll make
[9:38] Speaker 1: everything right later. Just one more time. When God says
[9:43] Speaker 1: to obey, he means right away. We don't know how
[9:47] Speaker 1: many days we have left on this earth. So why
[9:51] Speaker 1: not do the right thing today? Well, two years pass
[9:55] Speaker 1: and a governor named Festus comes into power. taking the
[10:00] Speaker 1: place of Felix. The Bible says that because Festus wanted
[10:05] Speaker 1: to make the Jews happy, he took Paul out of jail,
[10:09] Speaker 1: saying he was sending him back to Jerusalem for another trial.
[10:14] Speaker 1: But Paul asked to go to Caesar instead. Thanks to
[10:18] Speaker 1: God's protection, Festus agreed. King Agrippa came to visit, and
[10:23] Speaker 1: after hearing all about this Paul, he wanted to see
[10:27] Speaker 1: him for himself. So Festus gathered a large group in
[10:32] Speaker 1: his palace, and Paul took the opportunity, as usual. He
[10:37] Speaker 1: told his story again. He preached his heart out again.
[10:41] Speaker 1: He built his case again. He argued and taught and
[10:45] Speaker 1: shared until there was nothing else to say except, Do
[10:49] Speaker 1: you believe? King Agrippa and Festus knew deep down Paul
[10:54] Speaker 1: was not lying.
[10:55] Speaker 2: They knew deep down he was not crazy.
[10:58] Speaker 1: And it's as if Agrippa wanted to believe, wanted to confess.
[11:03] Speaker 1: But it just seemed like too much for him. Paul
[11:07] Speaker 1: was left standing there once again with no proof of
[11:11] Speaker 1: any wrongdoing. So off he was sent to Caesar. Thanks
[11:16] Speaker 1: for joining me today. I know this trial stuff can
[11:19] Speaker 1: get a little confusing. All we really need to remember.
[11:23] Speaker 2: Is one thing.
[11:24] Speaker 1: Paul was faithful and he obeyed God, even when it
[11:28] Speaker 1: was hard. And over and over again, God took care
[11:33] Speaker 1: of him. No matter how many chances he was given,
[11:37] Speaker 1: no matter how scary things got, Paul kept telling his
[11:41] Speaker 1: story about how Jesus saved him and telling it well.
[11:47] Speaker 1: Did you know that you have a story too? Who
[11:50] Speaker 1: can you tell your story to today? Well, we have
[11:54] Speaker 1: just a few more times together, so make sure to
[11:57] Speaker 1: come back and hear how the whole Bible wraps itself
[12:01] Speaker 1: up in one.
[12:03] Speaker 2: Big, amazing story. Paul's story is soon coming to an end.
[12:08] Speaker 1: But really, It's only the beginning. The Bible is the
[12:13] Speaker 1: best story ever told. It's God's story to you.
[12:17] Speaker 2: And it's all true. Did you love today's podcast? Well,
