[1:24] Speaker 2: Fishing for People In our last story, Jesus began preaching
[1:30] Speaker 2: about the kingdom of God and was even rejected in
[1:33] Speaker 2: his hometown of Nazareth. In this story, Jesus begins to
[1:39] Speaker 2: call some disciples to be fishers of men and continues
[1:42] Speaker 2: his preaching and healing ministry, as inspired by the Gospels.
[1:51] Speaker 1: Hi again, it's Julianne Thompson, guest hosting for Julia Jeffers
[1:55] Speaker 1: Sadler with the Kids Bible in a Year podcast. I
[1:58] Speaker 1: am so excited you're here with me. Today, we're gonna
[2:01] Speaker 1: hear a story about when Jesus tells some fishermen how
[2:05] Speaker 1: to do their job and the amazing things that happens
[2:09] Speaker 1: when they listen. It is such a good story. So
[2:12] Speaker 1: let's dive in.
[2:15] Speaker 2: One day, Jesus was standing by a lake when a
[2:18] Speaker 2: large crowd surrounded him to hear his teachings and see
[2:22] Speaker 2: the miraculous signs they heard about. The crowd got so
[2:26] Speaker 2: big that Jesus got into a nearby fisherman's boat. He
[2:31] Speaker 2: sat down and finished teaching the people from the boat.
[2:35] Speaker 2: The fishermen were cleaning their nets when Jesus told Simon,
[2:40] Speaker 2: Put the boat into the deep water and let down
[2:42] Speaker 2: the net for a big catch. Simon could hardly believe Jesus' request.
[2:48] Speaker 2: He was really tired from a long day of fishing,
[2:52] Speaker 2: and he had not caught.
[2:53] Speaker 4: Anything at all.
[2:55] Speaker 2: Simon said to Jesus, But because you said so, I
[2:59] Speaker 2: will let down the nets. Immediately, they caught a huge
[3:04] Speaker 2: number of fish that the nets began to break. Simon
[3:08] Speaker 2: called for his fisherman friends to come help him. They
[3:11] Speaker 2: helped bring the big loads of fish onto the boat.
[3:16] Speaker 2: They filled both boats, and it was so heavy that
[3:19] Speaker 2: they began to sink. Simon Peter was completely shocked by
[3:24] Speaker 2: this miracle. He fell to the feet of Jesus and said,
[3:28] Speaker 2: Go away, for I am a sinful man. Jesus responded
[3:33] Speaker 2: to Simon Peter, Don't be afraid. From now on, you
[3:38] Speaker 2: will catch men. Simon Peter said, and his fisherman friends
[3:42] Speaker 2: James and John, and Simon Peter's brother Andrew, pulled their
[3:47] Speaker 2: boats to shore, left everything, and followed Jesus. Jesus changed
[3:53] Speaker 2: their lives. Instead of fishing for fish, they were now
[3:58] Speaker 2: going to fish for men. On the Sabbath day, Jesus
[4:03] Speaker 2: traveled to the synagogue in the city of Capernaum to teach.
[4:08] Speaker 2: Many people followed Jesus and were amazed. They had never
[4:12] Speaker 2: seen or heard anyone like him before. He spoke with
[4:16] Speaker 2: so much boldness and authority, unlike the teachers of the law.
[4:21] Speaker 2: Out of nowhere, a man came towards Jesus who was
[4:24] Speaker 2: filled with an evil spirit. He was acting crazy and
[4:29] Speaker 2: yelled out, Hey Jesus, what do you want? I know
[4:34] Speaker 2: you are the Holy One of God. Jesus said, Be quiet.
[4:38] Speaker 2: Come out of him. Right then, the evil spirit shook
[4:43] Speaker 2: the man up. He screamed and the evil spirit left
[4:47] Speaker 2: his body. The man was free. Everyone in the synagogue
[4:52] Speaker 2: could not believe what they had just seen. They all
[4:56] Speaker 2: asked each other, what just happened? He gives orders to
[5:00] Speaker 2: evil spirits and they obey him? They had never seen
[5:03] Speaker 2: anything like it. They were completely amazed at what Jesus
[5:07] Speaker 2: was doing. Everyone was talking about Jesus. His miracles were
[5:13] Speaker 2: the talk of the town and the surrounding cities. Then
[5:17] Speaker 2: Jesus went to the home of Peter and Andrew. There,
[5:21] Speaker 2: Peter's mother-in-law was sick in bed with a high fever.
[5:24] Speaker 2: Jesus went to her, held her hand, and helped her
[5:28] Speaker 2: stand up. Instantly, the fever left her. and she was
[5:32] Speaker 2: completely healed. She went about her business around the house
[5:37] Speaker 2: and served all her guests. Later that night, the whole
[5:41] Speaker 2: town crowded around at the door of this house to
[5:44] Speaker 2: receive healing from Jesus. Jesus did it again. He taught
[5:49] Speaker 2: the people and healed many with diseases. Early the next morning,
[5:54] Speaker 2: Jesus woke up before everyone else and left the house.
[5:58] Speaker 2: Before the sun even came up, Jesus walked around and
[6:01] Speaker 2: prayed to his father in heaven. Peter and the other
[6:05] Speaker 2: followers later woke up. Oh no, where is Jesus? They said.
[6:11] Speaker 2: They didn't want to miss out on being with Jesus.
[6:15] Speaker 2: When they finally found him, Jesus led them to different
[6:19] Speaker 2: cities to preach the good news of the kingdom of God.
[6:23] Speaker 2: So he went throughout Galilee preaching in the synagogues and
[6:28] Speaker 2: healing those with evil spirits.
[6:35] Speaker 1: Wow, Jesus is going everywhere, teaching and preaching and doing miracles.
[6:40] Speaker 1: I would have loved to have seen all that, wouldn't you?
[6:42] Speaker 1: I bet for Jesus' followers called the disciples, those were
[6:47] Speaker 1: the best times of their lives. But they almost missed them.
[6:52] Speaker 1: Did you see? One tiny decision changed everything. Let's take
[6:57] Speaker 1: a look at what happened. More and more people were
[7:01] Speaker 1: hearing about Jesus. He was telling the good news of
[7:04] Speaker 1: the kingdom of heaven to everyone. And what was the fabulous, wonderful, spectacular, extraordinary,
[7:11] Speaker 1: exceptionally super tremendous news Jesus was sharing?
[7:15] Speaker 4: It was God's kingdom. The one David sang.
[7:18] Speaker 1: About and Isaiah prophesied about and Daniel dreamed about. The
[7:22] Speaker 1: kingdom every Jew had heard about since they were itty
[7:25] Speaker 1: bitty babies was finally on its way. Even though the
[7:29] Speaker 1: Romans controlled their country and the Lord hadn't spoken through
[7:33] Speaker 1: a prophet like Elijah or Jeremiah for hundreds of years,
[7:37] Speaker 1: God hadn't forgotten about his people. He wanted to rescue them,
[7:42] Speaker 1: and Jesus was showing them how. One morning, so many
[7:47] Speaker 1: people wanted to hear this fabulous, spectacular, extraordinary, exceptionally astonishing
[7:52] Speaker 1: news that Jesus had to find somewhere new to preach.
[7:57] Speaker 1: He had to stand away from the crowd so everyone
[8:00] Speaker 1: could see and hear him. Simon Peter's boat was perfect.
[8:05] Speaker 1: Now that morning, Peter and his friends were tired. They
[8:09] Speaker 1: were professional fishermen, and they had been up all night
[8:13] Speaker 1: working hard. You see, fishing was a big industry in Galilee.
[8:18] Speaker 1: And if you've ever gone out to a pond or
[8:20] Speaker 1: a river with a fishing pole, or you put a
[8:23] Speaker 1: worm on a hook, ew, you've been fishing. But that's
[8:27] Speaker 1: not the way Simon Peter and his brother Andrew went fishing.
[8:32] Speaker 1: Those guys rowed out to the middle of the Sea
[8:34] Speaker 1: of Galilee, dropped huge nets into the water. And when
[8:39] Speaker 1: the fish swam into the net, swoop, those fishermen would
[8:42] Speaker 1: pull the nets in and scoop the fish up. And
[8:45] Speaker 1: to keep all the fish from seeing the nets and
[8:48] Speaker 1: swimming away, they usually worked at night. Experienced fishermen like
[8:54] Speaker 1: Simon Peter and Andrew swam dropped their nets seven to
[8:58] Speaker 1: eight times in one night no wonder they were tired
[9:03] Speaker 1: and no wonder when Jesus asked them to go out
[9:06] Speaker 1: and drop their nets again after a night of not
[9:09] Speaker 1: catching anything Peter was a little reluctant he knew Jesus
[9:15] Speaker 1: was a carpenter and a preacher someone Peter thought didn't
[9:19] Speaker 1: know nearly as much about fishing as the professional fishermen
[9:23] Speaker 1: did Besides, fishing during the day didn't make any sense.
[9:30] Speaker 1: But sometimes God asks us to do things that don't
[9:34] Speaker 1: feel like they make any sense. He might ask you
[9:38] Speaker 1: to show love to a bully or to be kind
[9:41] Speaker 1: to someone who was mean to you or to give
[9:44] Speaker 1: your money away to someone who needs it. God might
[9:48] Speaker 1: ask you to tell someone who says they don't believe
[9:50] Speaker 1: in him the fabulous, wonderful, spectacular, extraordinary, exceptionally stupendous news
[9:56] Speaker 1: about Jesus and his kingdom. And when you do, you'll
[10:01] Speaker 1: learn that Peter and the other disciples learned that morning.
[10:05] Speaker 1: It doesn't matter what you know. God always knows more
[10:10] Speaker 1: and he knows best. You see, the logical thing for
[10:14] Speaker 1: Peter to have done would have been to say, no.
[10:18] Speaker 1: And if he had, he would have missed out on
[10:20] Speaker 1: the best times of his life. Because when Peter said
[10:25] Speaker 1: yes to Jesus, even though what Jesus asked didn't make
[10:29] Speaker 1: any sense to his fisherman's brain, Jesus showed him that
[10:34] Speaker 1: he did know more and he did know best. And
[10:39] Speaker 1: Peter could trust him with everything. And you can too.
[10:45] Speaker 1: No matter what happens in your life, God knows more
[10:48] Speaker 1: about it than you do. You might feel confused, but
[10:53] Speaker 1: God is not.
[10:54] Speaker 4: You might feel scared, but God is not.
[10:58] Speaker 1: And when you trust and follow him, even when you
[11:01] Speaker 1: don't understand, that tiny decision can change everything. And you
[11:07] Speaker 1: just might have the best time of your life. I
[11:10] Speaker 1: am so happy you joined me today. Come back next
