Join Julia Jeffress Sadler as she takes us on an incredible adventure in Episode 130. In this podcast episode, we explore the pivotal choices and events in the life of Jeremiah, as described in the book of Jeremiah in the Bible. Faced with the threat of Babylon's army, God offers the people of Jerusalem a choice: surrender to live or stay and die. Jeremiah's message of surrender angers the officials, leading to his harsh imprisonment in a muddy well. Miraculously, he is rescued but remains in the king's prison. As Jeremiah predicted, Babylon breaches the city walls, captures King Zedekiah, and destroys Jerusalem. Nebuchadnezzar, recognizing Jeremiah's wisdom, orders his safe retrieval and offers him refuge in Babylon, but Jeremiah chooses to stay in Judah. The episode concludes with a hopeful prophecy from God about a future righteous descendant of David, a savior who embodies perfect goodness. [1:12] Speaker 2: God protects Jeremiah. In our last story, Jeremiah was placed
[1:18] Speaker 2: in the palace prison and told Israel they were going
[1:21] Speaker 2: to be taken by Babylon. In this story, Jeremiah will
[1:26] Speaker 2: be thrown into a well for giving God's message and
[1:29] Speaker 2: And Babylon will destroy Jerusalem. But Jeremiah will be protected,
[1:34] Speaker 2: as inspired by Jeremiah 2 Kings and 2 Chronicles.
[1:42] Speaker 1: Hi there, it's Joya Sadler with the Kids Bible in
[1:45] Speaker 1: the Air podcast. I'm so happy you're here. Today we
[1:48] Speaker 1: get to hear how God protected Jeremiah when he was
[1:51] Speaker 1: thrown into a well. And what happened when the city
[1:55] Speaker 1: of Jerusalem fell to King Nebuchadnezzar and his army? Let's
[1:59] Speaker 1: dive in.
[2:03] Speaker 2: God gave Jeremiah two choices to tell the people. He said,
[2:08] Speaker 2: you can stay in Jerusalem and die, or you can
[2:11] Speaker 2: stop fighting the Babylonian army and live. The officials of
[2:16] Speaker 2: Judah heard God's message. They hurried to King Zedekiah and said,
[2:21] Speaker 2: Jeremiah must die. He's telling people to stop fighting. King
[2:25] Speaker 2: Zedekiah gave Jeremiah over to the officials. They tied ropes
[2:29] Speaker 2: around him and left him in a well. Luckily, there
[2:33] Speaker 2: was no water or Jeremiah could have drowned. There was
[2:37] Speaker 2: only mud. Lots of it. One of the officials argued
[2:41] Speaker 2: with the king. You are going to kill Jeremiah.
[2:45] Speaker 3: What will he eat?
[2:46] Speaker 2: What will he drink? The king told the official he
[2:49] Speaker 2: could free Jeremiah from the well. It was not easy
[2:53] Speaker 2: freeing Jeremiah. It took 30 men. But when he finally
[2:57] Speaker 2: came up, he was forced to return to prison, the
[3:00] Speaker 2: king's prison. It was much better than the well. The
[3:05] Speaker 2: Babylonians kept attacking until one day they broke down the
[3:08] Speaker 2: walls and took.
[3:09] Speaker 3: Over the city.
[3:11] Speaker 2: Zedekiah heard that the city walls were broken down. He
[3:14] Speaker 2: tried to escape under the cover of night, but the
[3:18] Speaker 2: Babylonians caught him. The Babylonians killed Zedekiah's sons in front
[3:23] Speaker 2: of him, blinded him, and put him in chains. Zedekiah
[3:27] Speaker 2: was taken to Babylon. The city was ruined. The temple
[3:31] Speaker 2: was destroyed. And everything was on fire. The walls protecting
[3:37] Speaker 2: the city were broken. There weren't many people left in Jerusalem,
[3:41] Speaker 2: but Jeremiah was one of them. Nebuchadnezzar sent his captain
[3:46] Speaker 2: to search for Jeremiah. Find the prophet and don't hurt him.
[3:51] Speaker 2: He can have whatever he wants, Nebuchadnezzar said. The captain
[3:55] Speaker 2: discovered Jeremiah in chains being taken away with the others.
[3:58] Speaker 2: The captain freed Jeremiah and said, You can come to
[4:03] Speaker 2: Babylon with me and the king will take care of
[4:05] Speaker 2: you forever. Or you can stay in Judah. Jeremiah decided
[4:10] Speaker 2: to stay in Judah and he took a man named
[4:13] Speaker 2: Baruch back with him. God protected the man who helped
[4:18] Speaker 2: Jeremiah out of the well. God said to Jeremiah, Someday
[4:23] Speaker 2: I will create a perfect man from David's family. This
[4:27] Speaker 2: perfect man will come to save everyone and make everything
[4:31] Speaker 2: right again.
[4:32] Speaker 3: He'll be called the God our righteousness.
[4:36] Speaker 2: Righteousness means to be perfectly okay. God was going to
[4:41] Speaker 2: send a man to earth who.
[4:43] Speaker 3: Would be perfectly good.
[4:45] Speaker 1: Today's story was very sad, wasn't it? For those living
[4:55] Speaker 1: in Judah, it was the most heartbreaking thing they could
[4:59] Speaker 1: possibly imagine. Nothing could be worse. In today's story, the
[5:04] Speaker 1: city of Jerusalem fell. Jerusalem, you see, had been an
[5:08] Speaker 1: enduring sign of Israel's strength and glory since the beginning.
[5:12] Speaker 1: Joshua and his army first conquered it when they entered
[5:15] Speaker 1: the promised land. David fought and claimed it when he
[5:19] Speaker 1: became king. And all the people called Jerusalem the city
[5:23] Speaker 1: of David after that. It was there David danced before
[5:27] Speaker 1: the Lord when the Ark of the Covenant was brought in.
[5:31] Speaker 1: And it was there King Solomon built the Lord's temple.
[5:35] Speaker 1: It was there that wise and distinguished guests like the
[5:39] Speaker 1: Queen of Sheba traveled over a thousand miles to visit.
[5:43] Speaker 1: Hundreds of celebrations had happened in its streets and millions
[5:47] Speaker 1: of families had made memories within its walls. If a
[5:51] Speaker 1: nation had a place to put its heart, Israel's heart
[5:54] Speaker 1: was in Jerusalem. That's because, most important of all, it
[5:59] Speaker 1: was there that God dwelled and met with his people.
[6:04] Speaker 1: But in today's story, Nebuchadnezzar's army burned it to the ground.
[6:08] Speaker 1: Then they carried everyone away to Babylon. And all God's
[6:13] Speaker 1: people wept. Israel's heart was broken. How would you have
[6:17] Speaker 1: felt if you had been in Jerusalem then? Would you
[6:21] Speaker 1: think God had forgotten you or that he didn't care?
[6:24] Speaker 1: Would you be afraid? Everything was so broken that it
[6:28] Speaker 1: could never be fixed again? I think that's how a
[6:32] Speaker 1: lot of the Israelites felt. But God hadn't forgotten his people.
[6:37] Speaker 1: He did care. In the middle of the worst thing
[6:40] Speaker 1: they could possibly imagine, God made a promise to fix
[6:45] Speaker 1: it all again. Through Jeremiah, he said, It was a
[6:50] Speaker 1: good promise. In fact, It's a very special promise because
[7:20] Speaker 1: you can see how God kept it with your own
[7:23] Speaker 1: two eyes. It's true. You can get on an airplane
[7:27] Speaker 1: right now and fly to Jerusalem. You could dance in
[7:30] Speaker 1: the streets through the city of David today. Because God
[7:35] Speaker 1: kept his promise to restore Jerusalem. He also kept his
[7:38] Speaker 1: promise to make a new covenant. Do you know how? Yes,
[7:43] Speaker 1: through Jesus. Almost 600 years after Babylon burned the city down,
[7:50] Speaker 1: Jesus walked through the rebuilt streets of Jerusalem. It was
[7:54] Speaker 1: there that he healed people and spoke God's truth. And
[7:58] Speaker 1: it was there at dinner one night when he told
[8:01] Speaker 1: his friends, Today I am making a new covenant with you.
[8:05] Speaker 1: But the very next day, he died. And if you
[8:09] Speaker 1: had been in Jerusalem then, how would you have felt?
[8:13] Speaker 1: Would you be afraid everything was so broken it could
[8:16] Speaker 1: never be fixed again? Probably. But nothing is ever so
[8:20] Speaker 1: broken that God can't fix it. Because after three days,
[8:25] Speaker 1: Jesus came back to life. And when he went up
[8:28] Speaker 1: to heaven, the Holy Spirit came down. And now God's
[8:32] Speaker 1: laws are written on our hearts through his Spirit, just
[8:36] Speaker 1: like God promised. And now people from every nation on
[8:40] Speaker 1: earth are amazed at the good things that happened in Jerusalem.
[8:45] Speaker 1: So if you ever feel like God has forgotten you
[8:48] Speaker 1: or that he doesn't care that things couldn't get any worse,
[8:53] Speaker 1: remember that people in Jerusalem once felt that way too.
[8:57] Speaker 1: But like them, God has loved you with an everlasting
[9:01] Speaker 1: love and he will restore you. One day everything that
[9:06] Speaker 1: was broken will be fixed. What was hurt will be healed.
[9:11] Speaker 1: And you and I and all of God's people will
[9:15] Speaker 1: dance in the streets of the heavenly Jerusalem with joy.
[9:20] Speaker 1: I'm so happy you joined me today. Come back next
[9:22] Speaker 1: time to hear about what happens to the people in
[9:25] Speaker 1: Judah who didn't get carried off to Babylon. Remember, the
[9:30] Speaker 1: Bible is the best story ever told. It's God's story
