[1:17] Speaker 2: The message of Jesus is glorified. In our last story,
[1:23] Speaker 2: Paul preached in Corinth and stayed for about a year
[1:27] Speaker 2: and a half He then went to Ephesus with Aquila
[1:30] Speaker 2: and Priscilla. There they taught Apollos, who took the gospel
[1:35] Speaker 2: to southern Greece. In this story, Paul will pray for
[1:39] Speaker 2: the Holy Spirit for some followers in Ephesus, and then
[1:44] Speaker 2: there will be a massive riot in the city, as
[1:48] Speaker 2: inspired by Acts.
[1:53] Speaker 1: Hi there, it's Julianne Thompson, guest hosting for Julia Jeffress Sadler.
[1:58] Speaker 1: with the Kids Bible in Ear podcast. I am so
[2:01] Speaker 1: happy you're here today. Today, we get to hear what
[2:04] Speaker 1: Paul does when people who don't care about Jesus get
[2:07] Speaker 1: everybody else riled up about the good news he's sharing.
[2:12] Speaker 1: What's going to happen? Well, let's jump in and find out.
[2:18] Speaker 2: Paul traveled a great distance and came to the city
[2:22] Speaker 2: of Ephesus. In the city, he found some men who
[2:26] Speaker 2: wanted to follow him. Paul asked them, Did you receive
[2:30] Speaker 2: the Holy Spirit when you believed? They responded and told
[2:34] Speaker 2: Paul that they had never heard of the Holy Spirit.
[2:37] Speaker 2: Paul explained that the baptism of John, which they had received,
[2:42] Speaker 2: was only pointing to the baptism of Jesus. When they
[2:46] Speaker 2: heard this, they were baptized in the name of Jesus.
[2:50] Speaker 2: Paul then laid his hands upon them, and the Holy
[2:54] Speaker 2: Spirit came down upon them. They allowed the Holy Spirit
[2:59] Speaker 2: to speak through them. There were 12 men in this group.
[3:03] Speaker 2: For three months, Paul preached about the kingdom of God
[3:06] Speaker 2: in the Jewish place of worship. Some people refused to
[3:10] Speaker 2: receive the message of Jesus, and they publicly spoke against
[3:14] Speaker 2: the gospel. Because of this, Paul and his followers left
[3:18] Speaker 2: and went to a public gathering place. For two years,
[3:23] Speaker 2: Paul and his followers discussed with the local people and
[3:26] Speaker 2: the message of Jesus spread from this place to all
[3:31] Speaker 2: of the people of Asia. God was causing great miracles
[3:35] Speaker 2: to happen through Paul, and many sick people were healed.
[3:39] Speaker 2: Some Jewish men tried to use the name of Jesus
[3:42] Speaker 2: to have power, but they did not have respect for
[3:46] Speaker 2: this power. The evil spirits they tried to have power
[3:50] Speaker 2: over turned and attacked the men. Because of this, Many
[3:54] Speaker 2: of the Jews and Greeks were afraid, but the name
[3:57] Speaker 2: of Jesus was glorified before all of the people. People
[4:02] Speaker 2: began to give up their evil practices. The message of
[4:06] Speaker 2: Jesus reached many people and was glorified greatly. God spoke
[4:11] Speaker 2: to Paul, telling him that he would soon go to Jerusalem.
[4:15] Speaker 2: He believed that after he went to Jerusalem, he would
[4:18] Speaker 2: then go to Rome. Before he left, A man named
[4:22] Speaker 2: Demetrius caused trouble for the Christians. He was a silversmith,
[4:27] Speaker 2: and his business of making idols was growing smaller because
[4:30] Speaker 2: of them. He accused Paul of speaking evil against the
[4:34] Speaker 2: goddess Artemis, who was the most famous god in the city.
[4:39] Speaker 2: As people received Jesus, they got rid of their idols
[4:43] Speaker 2: and did not buy any more. Demetrius caused the idol
[4:47] Speaker 2: makers to rise up and caused great chaos in the cities.
[4:51] Speaker 2: They yelled, Great is Artemis of Ephesians! Many of the
[4:56] Speaker 2: people in the crowd did not even know why they
[4:59] Speaker 2: were shouting, for there was great confusion. After many hours
[5:04] Speaker 2: of this riot, a man was able to calm down
[5:06] Speaker 2: the crowd. He told them that if they had an
[5:09] Speaker 2: issue with Paul, they must peacefully take him to a
[5:13] Speaker 2: court of law. Finally, he convinced them to go home
[5:17] Speaker 2: and settle down.
[5:23] Speaker 1: Oh my, Paul's life has become anything but boring, hasn't it?
[5:29] Speaker 1: God is using him to do amazing things and some.
[5:33] Speaker 2: People love it.
[5:35] Speaker 1: They want to know even more about God's kingdom, but
[5:38] Speaker 1: some people hate it and want it to stop. That's interesting,
[5:44] Speaker 1: isn't it? Did you know that the same thing still
[5:47] Speaker 1: happens today? When you talk about Jesus, some people will
[5:52] Speaker 1: love it. They want to hear even more. And some
[5:55] Speaker 1: people will hate it. They want you to stop talking
[5:59] Speaker 1: about Jesus altogether. Now, why do you think that is?
[6:04] Speaker 1: Do you think it has to do with you and
[6:06] Speaker 1: the message you're bringing? Or do you think it's more
[6:09] Speaker 1: about those people and their hearts? Well, let's take another
[6:13] Speaker 1: look at today's story and see if we can find out.
[6:17] Speaker 1: Paul is taking more and more road trips. telling more
[6:21] Speaker 1: and more people about Jesus. Whenever he goes, he listens
[6:26] Speaker 1: to people's worries and patiently answers their questions. God even
[6:31] Speaker 1: does miracles through him. Bodies are being healed, evil spirits
[6:36] Speaker 1: are being kicked out, and people are receiving the Holy Spirit.
[6:40] Speaker 1: Everywhere Paul goes and everywhere people hear what he's saying,
[6:45] Speaker 1: lives are being changed. The message of Jesus is making
[6:49] Speaker 1: a big difference. But in Ephesus, the message of Jesus
[6:54] Speaker 1: is causing a big problem. You see, all throughout Greece
[6:58] Speaker 1: and Rome, people worship other gods. Idols made out of
[7:03] Speaker 1: silver or gold or stone. And when people start believing
[7:07] Speaker 1: in Jesus, they stop believing in those other gods. And
[7:12] Speaker 1: they stop buying idols made out of silver or gold
[7:15] Speaker 1: or stone. And the people who make those idols out
[7:19] Speaker 1: of silver or gold or stone start losing money. That's
[7:24] Speaker 1: what happened to Demetrius in Ephesus. Demetrius doesn't really listen
[7:29] Speaker 1: to the message of Jesus or care about it. He
[7:32] Speaker 1: just doesn't like that it's costing him money. His heart
[7:36] Speaker 1: is focusing on what he's losing, not what he could gain.
[7:40] Speaker 1: And so Demetrius tries to stop God's word. He thinks
[7:44] Speaker 1: he could stop Jesus by stopping Paul. But Jesus can't
[7:49] Speaker 1: be stopped, can he?
[7:51] Speaker 2: No.
[7:51] Speaker 1: Demetrius starts talking.
[7:53] Speaker 4: To other people about how bad Jesus is.
[7:57] Speaker 1: And then he starts yelling. And his yelling makes other
[8:00] Speaker 1: people start yelling. And soon, a whole crowd of people
[8:04] Speaker 1: are yelling. The crowd gets bigger and bigger and louder
[8:07] Speaker 1: and louder. People are hopping mad. They're shaking their fists
[8:11] Speaker 1: and stomping their feet and yelling at Paul. And most
[8:14] Speaker 1: of them don't even know why. It's all a little crazy.
[8:19] Speaker 1: Do you know the same kind of thing still happens today?
[8:23] Speaker 1: Lots of people don't really listen to the message of
[8:26] Speaker 1: Jesus or care about it. Their hearts get focused on
[8:30] Speaker 1: what they can lose and not what they can gain.
[8:34] Speaker 1: And when they start yelling about it, other people start
[8:37] Speaker 1: yelling about it too. They get hopping mad, shaking their
[8:41] Speaker 1: fists and stomping their feet and yelling at Christians. And
[8:44] Speaker 1: many of them don't even know why. They just hear
[8:48] Speaker 1: other people getting mad. So they get mad too. It's crazy.
[8:53] Speaker 1: And when that happens, what do you think you can do? Well,
[8:58] Speaker 1: like Paul, you can listen to people's worries and patiently
[9:02] Speaker 1: answer their questions. You can show them God's love by
[9:06] Speaker 1: helping them and praying for them. You can help them
[9:09] Speaker 1: care about the message of Jesus by the way you
[9:12] Speaker 1: live your life. Some people will listen and love it,
[9:17] Speaker 1: and some people will not. And that's okay, because like Paul,
[9:23] Speaker 1: The only thing you really need to focus on is
[9:26] Speaker 1: loving and obeying Jesus. He'll take care of the rest.
[9:31] Speaker 1: I am so happy you joined me today. Come back
