[1:20] Speaker 4: The Holy Spirit comes upon God's people. In our last story,
[1:25] Speaker 4: Jesus came to the eleven and said, Go and make disciples.
[1:31] Speaker 4: Jesus ascended and was taken up in a cloud, and
[1:34] Speaker 4: the disciples waited in Jerusalem to receive the Spirit and
[1:38] Speaker 4: be witnesses. In this story, the Holy Spirit will descend
[1:43] Speaker 4: on the day of Pentecost, and Peter will explain what
[1:47] Speaker 4: God is doing. As inspired by Acts.
[1:55] Speaker 2: Hi there, it's Julianne Thompson, guest hosting for Julia Jeffress
[1:58] Speaker 2: Sadler with the Kids Bible in Ear podcast. I am
[2:01] Speaker 2: so happy you're here. Today, we get to hear the
[2:05] Speaker 2: story about how the church began. We'll also get to
[2:09] Speaker 2: learn how God has been planning this wonderful event since
[2:12] Speaker 2: the very beginning.
[2:14] Speaker 1: Let's jump in.
[2:18] Speaker 4: After Jesus ascended to heaven, the apostles were in the
[2:22] Speaker 4: upper room. Not many days after, the day of Pentecost
[2:26] Speaker 4: had come, and all of the apostles had come together
[2:29] Speaker 4: again to pray. While they were praying, a huge wind
[2:33] Speaker 4: came and filled the room. Then the Holy Spirit fell
[2:37] Speaker 4: in the room, and what seemed like flames of fire
[2:40] Speaker 4: from heaven stood above each person. When this happened, the
[2:45] Speaker 4: noise was heard from all around Jerusalem and a large
[2:49] Speaker 4: crowd came around the house. The people in the crowd
[2:53] Speaker 4: heard all the men and women speaking in other languages
[2:56] Speaker 4: and were instantly amazed and confused. These men are from Galilee.
[3:03] Speaker 4: How do they know all of these other languages? They
[3:06] Speaker 4: exclaimed from the crowd. Some of the people in the
[3:09] Speaker 4: crowd responded saying, These men are drunk. They have had
[3:13] Speaker 4: too many drinks. Peter heard this. and realized that the
[3:17] Speaker 4: crowd was mocking these men, and he stood up to
[3:20] Speaker 4: confront the crowd.
[3:22] Speaker 1: These men are.
[3:23] Speaker 4: Not drunk, as you say. What you see here is
[3:27] Speaker 4: the fulfillment of Joel's prophecy when he said, In the
[3:31] Speaker 4: last days, God says, I will pour my spirit on
[3:36] Speaker 4: all people. Peter then quoted the prophecy of Joel, which
[3:40] Speaker 4: said that people will prophesy, see visions, and dream dreams
[3:46] Speaker 4: as a result of the Holy Spirit falling on these people.
[3:50] Speaker 4: Peter continued to preach about the life and ministry of Jesus.
[3:54] Speaker 4: He spoke of how Jesus was sent by God, and
[3:57] Speaker 4: how the people handed Jesus over to the men who
[4:00] Speaker 4: put him to death. He then shares the hope of Jesus' resurrection,
[4:05] Speaker 4: which is what made it possible for the Holy Spirit
[4:08] Speaker 4: to fall, for Jesus left his people the Holy Spirit.
[4:12] Speaker 4: Peter said this to instill hope into the people of God.
[4:16] Speaker 4: He spoke of David and what he said about God
[4:19] Speaker 4: and his place in heaven. He encouraged them that they
[4:23] Speaker 4: are witnesses of Jesus' resurrection so.
[4:26] Speaker 1: That they could, through the Holy Spirit, spread God's word.
[4:30] Speaker 4: Peter continued to proclaim Jesus as Lord and Messiah through
[4:35] Speaker 4: God the Father. After this, the people asked Peter and
[4:40] Speaker 4: the apostles, Well then, what do we do? Peter looked
[4:44] Speaker 4: at them and said, Ask forgiveness for your sins and
[4:48] Speaker 4: be baptized in water, all of you. Then you will
[4:51] Speaker 4: receive the Holy Spirit. This promise will remain true for
[4:55] Speaker 4: you and all of your descendants to come who will
[4:58] Speaker 4: accept God's call. He then warned them, saying, Keep yourselves
[5:03] Speaker 4: safe from this very corrupt and twisted generation that you
[5:07] Speaker 4: live in.
[5:08] Speaker 1: There were many who.
[5:10] Speaker 4: Accepted Christ, and were baptized in water that day. And
[5:14] Speaker 4: the number of believers grew. About 3,000 people were added
[5:18] Speaker 4: to their number. These people then began to follow the
[5:22] Speaker 4: apostles and their teaching. They all came together often in fellowship.
[5:27] Speaker 4: They committed to this fellowship and continued to eat together
[5:31] Speaker 4: and pray together as often as they can.
[5:40] Speaker 1: Wow, what an amazing story.
[5:43] Speaker 2: Did you know that Pentecost is like a birthday for
[5:45] Speaker 2: the church? Just like Christmas is a birthday party for Jesus,
[5:50] Speaker 2: it is. Now, when you think of a church, you
[5:54] Speaker 2: might think of the place you go to worship God.
[5:58] Speaker 2: Maybe it has a steeple or a stained glass window,
[6:01] Speaker 2: or maybe.
[6:02] Speaker 1: It has a rock star stage and lots of lights.
[6:05] Speaker 2: Maybe you go to Sunday school or children's church or
[6:09] Speaker 2: special kids activities. Or maybe you sit with your mom
[6:12] Speaker 2: and dad in the main worship service. Whatever your church
[6:17] Speaker 2: experience is like, God's church is not actually a place.
[6:23] Speaker 1: It's a people.
[6:25] Speaker 2: It's all the people all around the world who know
[6:28] Speaker 2: and love Jesus and who have received the Holy Spirit.
[6:33] Speaker 2: The Holy Spirit is the friend Jesus said he would
[6:37] Speaker 2: send us when he went back to heaven. It's the
[6:40] Speaker 2: very spirit of God.
[6:43] Speaker 1: Living in you.
[6:44] Speaker 2: It's the quiet voice reminding you that God loves you.
[6:49] Speaker 1: And when you're mad, sad, or upset.
[6:52] Speaker 2: It's what gives your prayers power and what helps you
[6:56] Speaker 2: understand God's word when you read it. And the very
[7:00] Speaker 2: first time followers of Jesus met the Holy Spirit was
[7:04] Speaker 2: the special day we learned about today, Pentecost. Now, I
[7:09] Speaker 2: want you to know some extremely cool things about the
[7:13] Speaker 2: way God sent His Spirit to His church.
[7:17] Speaker 1: First, Pentecost wasn't new.
[7:20] Speaker 2: It was a celebration God gave His people at Mount
[7:24] Speaker 2: Sinai through Moses.
[7:26] Speaker 1: Isn't that awesome?
[7:28] Speaker 2: God didn't just give his people laws to follow. He
[7:32] Speaker 2: gave them parties to enjoy too. He wants us to
[7:36] Speaker 2: celebrate the gift of life that he gave us.
[7:40] Speaker 1: The Jews celebrated.
[7:42] Speaker 2: Pentecost by offering the first bundle of grain they harvested
[7:45] Speaker 2: each year to the Lord. It was a sign they
[7:48] Speaker 2: trusted him that more food would follow. In a similar way, Jesus'
[7:55] Speaker 2: followers were the first people to receive the Holy Spirit.
[7:59] Speaker 2: And because it happened on this special holiday, God was
[8:03] Speaker 2: giving a sign that many more believers like you and
[8:07] Speaker 2: me would follow. The second extremely cool thing that God
[8:13] Speaker 2: had to do with the little flames of fire that
[8:15] Speaker 2: floated above everybody's heads.
[8:18] Speaker 1: Now, what do you think that was all about?
[8:21] Speaker 2: Let's think back again to Moses and the Israelites at
[8:25] Speaker 2: Mount Sinai. When the glory of God rested over the tabernacle,
[8:30] Speaker 2: God's house in the desert, what did it look like?
[8:33] Speaker 1: Do you remember? It was a cloud by day and
[8:38] Speaker 1: a fire at night.
[8:40] Speaker 2: Fire was a picture of God living among his people
[8:43] Speaker 2: in the tabernacle.
[8:45] Speaker 1: And from that time all the.
[8:47] Speaker 2: Way until this time, everybody believed that God lived in
[8:52] Speaker 2: the tabernacle or in the temple. But when the Holy
[8:56] Speaker 2: Spirit came, suddenly fire floated above people just like it.
[9:02] Speaker 1: Had over the tabernacle.
[9:05] Speaker 2: It was a sign from God that now His people
[9:09] Speaker 2: were becoming the tabernacle and the temple.
[9:12] Speaker 1: He was going to live inside our hearts.
[9:15] Speaker 2: That's why we can worship God anywhere today, not just
[9:19] Speaker 2: in a church, because now we are his home and.
[9:24] Speaker 1: He is with us everywhere we go.
[9:27] Speaker 2: The last extremely cool thing about Pentecost had to do
[9:31] Speaker 2: with all the languages. Jews from all over the world
[9:35] Speaker 2: were visiting Jerusalem to celebrate Pentecost. They spoke Greek and
[9:40] Speaker 2: Latin and a whole bunch of other languages. But when
[9:44] Speaker 2: Peter and the other believers who received the Holy Spirit
[9:47] Speaker 2: began speaking, each person understood them in their own language.
[9:54] Speaker 1: Whoa.
[9:55] Speaker 2: Do you remember another story when people spoke a bunch
[9:59] Speaker 2: of languages?
[10:01] Speaker 1: Yes, the Tower of Babel.
[10:04] Speaker 2: Just like God used different languages to separate people back then,
[10:09] Speaker 2: now he used language to bring them all back together.
[10:13] Speaker 2: What once kept people apart now made them one. They
[10:19] Speaker 2: shared one purpose, one mission, one Holy Spirit. That's how
[10:24] Speaker 2: the church was born and how we can live as
[10:27] Speaker 2: God's church today.
[10:28] Speaker 1: I am so happy you joined me.
[10:31] Speaker 2: Come back next time to hear how Peter and John
