[1:17] Speaker 4: Daniel and the Lion's Den In our last story, the
[1:22] Speaker 4: Medes and Persians took over right after Daniel interpreted the
[1:25] Speaker 4: writing on the walls. He also received insight from Gabriel
[1:29] Speaker 4: about the words given to Jeremiah and how many years
[1:33] Speaker 4: are decreed for atonement. In this story, Daniel will be
[1:38] Speaker 4: thrown into the lion's den for refusing to worship, as
[1:42] Speaker 4: inspired by Daniel.
[1:48] Speaker 1: Well, hi, it's Julianne Thompson, guest hosting for Julia Jeffers
[1:52] Speaker 1: Sadler with the Kids Bible in Ear podcast. I'm so
[1:55] Speaker 1: glad you're here today.
[1:57] Speaker 2: In this story, we.
[1:58] Speaker 1: Get to hear what happened to Daniel when he said
[2:00] Speaker 1: yes to God and no to the king's decree. And
[2:04] Speaker 1: when everyone around him discovered who was really king. Let's
[2:09] Speaker 1: find out what happened.
[2:13] Speaker 4: When Darius was king of the Persian Empire, he appointed
[2:16] Speaker 4: 120 officials to rule sections of the kingdoms. He also
[2:22] Speaker 4: appointed three administrators to oversee the officials. Daniel was one
[2:27] Speaker 4: of the three administrators, and King Darius highly favored him.
[2:31] Speaker 4: He stood out as one of the best because the
[2:34] Speaker 4: Spirit of God was with him. The other two administrators
[2:37] Speaker 4: were jealous of Daniel, so they teamed up with the
[2:41] Speaker 4: officials to plot and make Daniel look bad in front
[2:44] Speaker 4: of the king. Daniel did nothing wrong, so they needed
[2:48] Speaker 4: to find a clever way to get him in trouble.
[2:51] Speaker 4: They knew that Daniel was a Jew who followed God
[2:54] Speaker 4: and found a way to use God's law to destroy Daniel.
[2:59] Speaker 4: One day, the officials and administrators went before the king
[3:02] Speaker 4: and told him, Long live King Darius. You are such
[3:06] Speaker 4: a great king, and we want the entire kingdom to
[3:09] Speaker 4: know that. We discussed and agreed that there should be
[3:12] Speaker 4: a law for everyone only to worship you for 30 days.
[3:17] Speaker 4: Whoever does not follow this law will be thrown into
[3:20] Speaker 4: the lion's den to be eaten. How does that sound,
[3:24] Speaker 4: your majesty? All you need to do is issue the
[3:27] Speaker 4: law to make it official. Darius was pleased to hear
[3:31] Speaker 4: this and agreed. For 30 days, the kingdom could only
[3:35] Speaker 4: worship King Darius. Daniel heard about the law, but he
[3:38] Speaker 4: did not worship King Darius. Instead, he went home and
[3:43] Speaker 4: continued to worship God as usual. The officials knew this,
[3:48] Speaker 4: So they went before King Darius and asked him, Your Majesty,
[3:52] Speaker 4: didn't you issue a law that forbids anyone from worshipping
[3:56] Speaker 4: other gods or else they would be thrown into the
[3:59] Speaker 4: lion's den? Darius responded, Yes, it is an unbreakable rule.
[4:04] Speaker 4: I cannot take it back. They answered, Daniel, who is
[4:08] Speaker 4: a Jewish exile and your administrator, has disobeyed your order.
[4:13] Speaker 4: When the king heard this, he was troubled. He admired
[4:17] Speaker 4: Daniel and did not want him eaten by lions. He
[4:21] Speaker 4: desperately wanted to rescue Daniel, but the officials reminded him
[4:25] Speaker 4: that the decree could not be changed. Darius hesitated, but
[4:30] Speaker 4: eventually ordered Daniel to be thrown into the lion's den
[4:33] Speaker 4: as punishment for not worshipping him. The king went to
[4:37] Speaker 4: Daniel before he was thrown and told him, May your
[4:41] Speaker 4: God save you from the lion's den. A stone covered
[4:45] Speaker 4: the den. and was sealed by the king so that
[4:48] Speaker 4: Daniel could not be released. King Darius felt so guilty
[4:53] Speaker 4: that night, he canceled his plans and refused to eat.
[4:57] Speaker 4: He was so distressed that he couldn't even sleep. As
[5:01] Speaker 4: soon as morning arrived, Darius rushed out of bed to
[5:04] Speaker 4: check the den where Daniel was sentenced. He called into
[5:08] Speaker 4: the den and said, Daniel, servant of God, have you
[5:12] Speaker 4: been rescued? To his surprise... Daniel answered. He told Darius,
[5:18] Speaker 4: Glory to God! He shut the mouths of the lions
[5:22] Speaker 4: using angels. He saved me from all harm because he
[5:25] Speaker 4: knew I did nothing wrong. Daniel's trust in God saved
[5:31] Speaker 4: him from the lions. The king let out a sigh
[5:34] Speaker 4: of relief as he ordered Daniel to be taken out
[5:37] Speaker 4: of the den. The king also commanded the accusers and
[5:41] Speaker 4: their families to be thrown.
[5:43] Speaker 2: Into the den.
[5:43] Speaker 4: For they tried to make Daniel look bad. They were
[5:47] Speaker 4: taken by the lions immediately. Then King Darius said, I
[5:53] Speaker 4: am making a decree that everyone is to fear and
[5:56] Speaker 4: respect the Lord that rescued Daniel. He is the living God.
[6:01] Speaker 4: Daniel continued to receive visions and prophecy about the future.
[6:11] Speaker 2: Whoa!
[6:12] Speaker 1: Daniel could have died for refusing to disobey God. But
[6:17] Speaker 1: he obeyed God anyways. And God did another miracle. He
[6:22] Speaker 1: kept those hungry, hungry lions from nibbling on Daniel's fingers
[6:26] Speaker 1: and toes and eating him right up.
[6:29] Speaker 2: What an amazing story.
[6:31] Speaker 1: Now, there's something special about the Bible that you might
[6:34] Speaker 1: not know. While every story happened to real people who
[6:38] Speaker 1: had real feelings and lived on faith, Our real planet Earth.
[6:43] Speaker 1: God is so smart that he also uses these stories
[6:47] Speaker 1: to tell other, deeper stories. Let's look at today's story
[6:51] Speaker 1: again to see if we can figure that other story out. Okay,
[6:55] Speaker 1: bad men tried to trick the king into killing Daniel.
[6:59] Speaker 1: But Daniel obeyed God and God rescued him. Even from hungry,
[7:04] Speaker 1: hungry lions who wanted to nibble on his fingers and
[7:06] Speaker 1: toes and eat him right up. That's an exciting story.
[7:11] Speaker 1: It's full of courage and faithfulness, and it inspires us
[7:14] Speaker 1: to be brave like Daniel, even in scary situations.
[7:19] Speaker 2: But let's take another look at the whole story.
[7:24] Speaker 1: Daniel lived in Babylon since he was a teenager, and
[7:27] Speaker 1: now he was an old man. He committed to honor
[7:31] Speaker 1: God when he was young, and he kept.
[7:34] Speaker 2: That commitment his whole life.
[7:36] Speaker 1: And so God honored Daniel by filling him up with
[7:39] Speaker 1: wisdom and giving him positions of authority in at least
[7:44] Speaker 1: three royal governments. On top of that, God told Daniel
[7:48] Speaker 1: things he didn't tell anyone else. Do you remember when
[7:53] Speaker 1: only Daniel could explain Nebuchadnezzar's dream about the sparkly statue?
[7:57] Speaker 2: It was about.
[7:59] Speaker 1: Kingdoms that will come and go, but God's rock-solid kingdom
[8:03] Speaker 1: that will last forever. And Nebuchadnezzar's second dream, that only
[8:09] Speaker 1: Daniel could explain, was about him losing his kingdom and
[8:13] Speaker 1: only getting it back once he recognized God is the
[8:16] Speaker 1: true king of everything. God spoke to Daniel directly too.
[8:22] Speaker 1: In fact, Daniel had a dream where he saw a
[8:24] Speaker 1: special godly king in heaven. An angel told him that
[8:28] Speaker 1: this king would one day rule over a kingdom of
[8:31] Speaker 1: people from every nation and language.
[8:35] Speaker 2: This king and his kingdom would.
[8:37] Speaker 1: Last forever and ever and ever. Now, let's go back
[8:43] Speaker 1: to today's story and see what other deeper story God
[8:46] Speaker 1: is telling. King Darius had conquered Babylon. He was king
[8:50] Speaker 1: of Medes and Persians, represented by the silver chest and
[8:54] Speaker 1: arms in Nebuchadnezzar's sparkly statue dream.
[8:58] Speaker 2: But bad men tricked him.
[9:00] Speaker 1: And even though he was the most powerful king in
[9:03] Speaker 1: the world, He couldn't rescue Daniel. Daniel was then thrown
[9:07] Speaker 1: to lions, who was sometimes called the king of the beast.
[9:11] Speaker 1: Even though they were the most powerful animals in the world,
[9:15] Speaker 1: those kings couldn't eat Daniel.
[9:18] Speaker 2: They couldn't even nibble his fingers and toes.
[9:21] Speaker 1: Daniel's life was in the hands of the one true king,
[9:25] Speaker 1: the Lord.
[9:26] Speaker 2: It always had been. You see, it didn't matter.
[9:30] Speaker 1: Who was on the throne in Babylon or Egypt or
[9:33] Speaker 1: Judah then, and it doesn't matter who was in the
[9:36] Speaker 1: power of the governments now. God has been on the
[9:39] Speaker 1: throne of the universe since before our world began, and
[9:44] Speaker 1: he will be long after other kingdoms and governments fade away.
[9:49] Speaker 1: He is stronger, wiser, kinder, and more powerful than anyone
[9:54] Speaker 1: or anything ever. That's the deeper story God was telling
[9:59] Speaker 1: with Daniel's life and that was an important story for
[10:02] Speaker 1: God's people to know because the true king of heaven
[10:06] Speaker 1: Daniel saw in his dream was coming to set up
[10:09] Speaker 1: a kingdom on earth and that rock solid kingdom would
[10:13] Speaker 1: be made of God's people not just from Israel or
[10:17] Speaker 1: Judah but but from every country, tribe, and language on
[10:21] Speaker 1: planet Earth. Do you know who that king is?
[10:24] Speaker 2: Yes, it's Jesus. And the Bible says he.
[10:28] Speaker 1: Is like a lion who will reign as king forever
[10:31] Speaker 1: and ever and ever. But don't worry about your fingers
[10:35] Speaker 1: and toes. King Jesus just wants your heart.
[10:39] Speaker 2: I'm so glad you joined me for today's story.

[10:44] Speaker 1: Babylonian captivity ends and God keeps His promise.
