[1:11] Speaker 3: The new birth. In our last story, Jesus had turned
[1:16] Speaker 3: water into wine at a wedding in Cana. In this story,
[1:21] Speaker 3: Jesus will cleanse the temple of the money changers. and
[1:24] Speaker 3: have a conversation with Nicodemus at night about being born again,
[1:28] Speaker 3: as inspired by the Gospels.
[1:35] Speaker 1: Hi again, it's Julianne Thompson, guest host team for Julia
[1:38] Speaker 1: Jeffress Sadler with the Kids Bible in a Year podcast.
[1:41] Speaker 1: I am so excited you're here today. Today, we're going
[1:45] Speaker 1: to hear a story about what happened when Jesus got
[1:48] Speaker 1: angry angry and then explained to an important Jewish leader
[1:52] Speaker 1: what following God was really like. It's such a good story.
[1:57] Speaker 1: So let's dive in.
[2:01] Speaker 3: When it was time for Passover, Jesus took his disciples
[2:04] Speaker 3: to Jerusalem. He went to the temple and was.
[2:07] Speaker 1: Disgusted by what he saw.
[2:10] Speaker 3: As he looked around, he saw tables and money changers everywhere.
[2:14] Speaker 3: At every table was a merchant selling animals for the
[2:17] Speaker 3: sacrifices of Passover. Jesus was furious that they turned God's
[2:22] Speaker 3: house into a filthy marketplace. He went aside from all
[2:27] Speaker 3: the business and prepared a whip made of leather strips,
[2:30] Speaker 3: and he cracked it, scaring the animals away. He ran
[2:34] Speaker 3: to the money-changing tables and flipped them over. When the
[2:37] Speaker 3: dust had cleared, some of the temple leaders came to
[2:40] Speaker 3: Jesus and asked, By what authority do you do this?
[2:44] Speaker 3: You have no right to trash our temple. Give us
[2:47] Speaker 3: some sign of your authority. Jesus said, I will tear
[2:51] Speaker 3: down this temple and rebuild it in three days. All
[2:56] Speaker 3: the priests were amazed by what he said. Though they
[2:59] Speaker 3: thought he meant the literal temple, they did not know
[3:03] Speaker 3: he was talking about his body. Others began to gather
[3:07] Speaker 3: round and listen to Jesus as he continued to teach.
[3:11] Speaker 3: He caught the attention of Nicodemus. a Jewish ruler and Pharisee.
[3:16] Speaker 3: Nicodemus approached Jesus at night and talked to him. Teacher,
[3:20] Speaker 3: we know who you are. You are sent by God,
[3:23] Speaker 3: and we see that in your miracles. Jesus responded, knowing
[3:28] Speaker 3: exactly what Nicodemus was trying to get at. Listen to me.
[3:32] Speaker 3: No one can see the kingdom of God unless they
[3:35] Speaker 3: are born again. Nicodemus was shocked. How can a man
[3:40] Speaker 3: be born again?
[3:40] Speaker 1: That is impossible.
[3:42] Speaker 3: Is he to return to his mother's womb? Jesus explained
[3:45] Speaker 3: to him, There are two births, physical, which you have experienced.
[3:51] Speaker 3: Spiritual birth is what you have yet to experience. In
[3:56] Speaker 3: your first birth, you will concern yourself with the things
[3:59] Speaker 3: of earth. When you experience the second birth, you will
[4:02] Speaker 3: focus on things of the spirit. You must be born
[4:06] Speaker 3: a second time. Don't be surprised. There are many things
[4:11] Speaker 3: you can't see with your eyes. You hear and feel
[4:15] Speaker 3: the wind, but you don't see it. It is the
[4:18] Speaker 3: same with the Spirit of God. Nicodemus shook his head
[4:23] Speaker 3: in disbelief. I do not get what you are teaching, Jesus.
[4:28] Speaker 3: Jesus continued to speak. You are a teacher of Israel,
[4:33] Speaker 3: and yet you don't get it. This is one of
[4:36] Speaker 3: the problems. Think back to Moses. The people complained against God,
[4:42] Speaker 3: and God sent snakes against the people. Moses then, by
[4:46] Speaker 3: the instruction of God, made a brass snake and put
[4:49] Speaker 3: it on a pole. Those that looked up to the
[4:52] Speaker 3: snake were healed. People that refused to look up were
[4:55] Speaker 3: not saved. Similarly, the people that look to the Son
[4:59] Speaker 3: of God, which is.
[5:00] Speaker 1: Me, will be saved.
[5:03] Speaker 3: God loved the world so much that he sent me
[5:06] Speaker 3: to save the world Oh my. Today's story was a little.
[5:09] Speaker 1: Confusing, wasn't it?
[5:11] Speaker 3: But Jesus said some very important things. So we want
[5:14] Speaker 3: to make sure we understand what he meant.
[5:16] Speaker 1: Let's take another look. In the first part of the story,
[5:40] Speaker 1: Jesus and his followers went to Jerusalem for the Passover.
[5:44] Speaker 1: Do you remember another time Jesus went to Jerusalem for
[5:47] Speaker 1: the Passover? Yes, when he was almost a teenager and
[5:52] Speaker 1: his parents couldn't find him on the way home. During
[5:55] Speaker 1: that visit, Jesus stayed behind at the temple, talking to
[5:59] Speaker 1: the teachers there because that felt like home too. The
[6:04] Speaker 1: temple had been built to help people worship God. So
[6:07] Speaker 1: it was an extraordinary place for Jesus. But during this visit,
[6:13] Speaker 1: lots of people at the temple weren't worshiping God, at
[6:16] Speaker 1: least not with their hearts. They had turned their faith
[6:20] Speaker 1: into a to-do list. They were just ticking off the boxes.
[6:25] Speaker 1: You see, way, way back at Mount Sinai, God had
[6:29] Speaker 1: given Moses instructions on how the people were to worship him.
[6:34] Speaker 1: They were supposed to think about the sin involved and
[6:37] Speaker 1: realized that it was bad, so bad that it separated
[6:41] Speaker 1: them from God. And since God is life, being separated
[6:46] Speaker 1: from him is death. So ever since the time of Moses,
[6:51] Speaker 1: worship involved the death of animals. One reason was to
[6:55] Speaker 1: help God's people realize how grave their sin was so
[6:59] Speaker 1: they would stop sinning. God didn't like death. He just
[7:04] Speaker 1: wanted the people's hearts to be close to his. so
[7:07] Speaker 1: they could truly live. But when Jesus got back to
[7:11] Speaker 1: the temple for Passover with his followers, people there weren't
[7:15] Speaker 1: bringing their hearts closer to God's. In fact, they weren't
[7:19] Speaker 1: thinking about their sin at all. They were just ticking
[7:22] Speaker 1: off their Moses to-do list. Go to Jerusalem?
[7:26] Speaker 3: Check.
[7:27] Speaker 1: Pick a lamb when we get there?
[7:29] Speaker 3: Check.
[7:30] Speaker 1: Drop it off at the altar? Check. Stop at the
[7:33] Speaker 1: market for bread, herbs, apples on the way back? Check
[7:37] Speaker 1: and check. This made Jesus angry. Why didn't anyone care
[7:42] Speaker 1: about worshiping God? Didn't they know their sin caused death?
[7:47] Speaker 1: Didn't anyone want to get close to God and truly live?
[7:51] Speaker 1: He was so angry. He kicked everybody out so no
[7:55] Speaker 1: one could tick anything off their to-do list at all.
[7:59] Speaker 1: He wanted them to start thinking about why God gave
[8:02] Speaker 1: Moses instructions for worship in the first place. And that's
[8:07] Speaker 1: why Jesus tried to explain to Nicodemus in the second
[8:10] Speaker 1: part of our story. You see, Nicodemus was a Pharisee.
[8:14] Speaker 1: And if anyone loved ticking boxes off their Moses to-do list,
[8:18] Speaker 1: it was Pharisees. They could turn one law into a
[8:22] Speaker 1: whole bunch of laws. And they made everybody keep every
[8:26] Speaker 1: single one. It had become like a competition. The Pharisees
[8:31] Speaker 1: wanted the whole world to know they could tick off
[8:34] Speaker 1: their boxes better than anyone else. But Jesus told Nicodemus
[8:38] Speaker 1: they'd gotten it all wrong. He said, look, worshiping God
[8:43] Speaker 1: is not about what everybody sees on the outside. It's
[8:46] Speaker 1: about what God sees on the inside. Sin brings death.
[8:52] Speaker 1: But God's kingdom is all about life. So to get there,
[8:57] Speaker 1: you've got to trade sin and death for life. And
[9:00] Speaker 1: when you do, all the new life is so powerful.
[9:04] Speaker 1: It's like getting born all over again. Nicodemus was confused.
[9:09] Speaker 1: He was still trying to figure out how Jesus' words
[9:12] Speaker 1: fit into the to-do list in his head. But there
[9:16] Speaker 1: was no way he could say, So Jesus helped Nicodemus
[9:19] Speaker 1: throw out his to-do list altogether. He said, That whoever
[9:23] Speaker 1: believes in him, should not perish, but have eternal life.
[9:40] Speaker 1: You see, following God isn't about ticking off boxes. Go
[9:44] Speaker 1: to church?
[9:45] Speaker 3: Check.
[9:46] Speaker 1: Be nice to your sister?
[9:48] Speaker 3: Check.
[9:49] Speaker 1: Don't kick the dog?
[9:51] Speaker 3: Check.
[9:51] Speaker 1: Those are good things, but knowing Jesus is about so
[9:55] Speaker 1: much more. It's about putting your heart close to his
[9:59] Speaker 1: so you can truly live. I am so happy you
[10:02] Speaker 1: joined me today. Come back next time to hear how
[10:05] Speaker 1: Jesus asked a woman for a drink of water and
