[3:09] the Miracle Wall Finish. Now for today's mysterious adventure with Nick Carter. As
[3:22] today's story opens, it's near the end of the last racing season in World
[3:24] City. Nick and Patsy are walking back to Nick's office when Nick suddenly seizes
[3:28] Patsy's arm and says, holand Betsy, that woman coming out of the pawn
[3:32] chap looks familiar, but I can't place her. She's a good looking woman.
[3:37] Allow if that blonde hair of hers is natural, I'm a Chinese grandmother.
[3:40] She doesn't seem to be connected with crime in any way yet. And
[3:44] look who's trailing her, Benny Retzel. I know him right enough. He's
[3:47] a private cop for the Mutual Protective Agency, isn't he? Yes? And
[3:51] they're a choice out. But not to get mixed up with the slogan as
[3:54] you'll marry them and we trail them, I'll let them go. What do
[3:58] we care who's getting married? It was? Can just mind our own business.
[4:01] I'm going in the porn shop. I want to ask a few questions,
[4:03] But why what's it to us? Probably nothing, Just curious to know
[4:08] who that woman was. Go ahead and make a fool of yourself. She's
[4:11] probably nobody. Well, mister Cotta here so it's you. Well, yeah,
[4:16] I swear to you though I ain't guilty. Watch this. You're not
[4:19] guilty of whatever you say. I don't. I ain't, and I'll probably
[4:24] have it that. That's not why I'm here. Who is that good looking
[4:27] blond that just went out of here? Or no, but I don't such
[4:30] a one. She is the life of Colonel Pembuth, no less Colonel Pembrith,
[4:33] the big horse race man. Yeah, that's the one. And you
[4:36] know, if I was a betting man, carter, which I ain't,
[4:40] and see if the Colonel had a horse running at the takt this afternoon,
[4:43] I'd put a bet down on him, on the colonel or the horse.
[4:46] Such a christ of the colonel. He could have been a horse race maybe
[4:48] coin w what's the stary. It's just a hunch, that's all. But
[4:53] when a dame asks me to give her three thousand dollars, I'm a sting
[4:56] of oiled work, maybe ten thousand, and swear she'll read the twenty four
[5:00] dollars. And if she's married to us sling of fast horses, well you
[5:04] can make your own guess, and it would still be a guess. Take
[5:06] me to the races, Nick, Why should I I want to win some
[5:10] money by betting on the colonel's horse? You know, the colonel. Oh?
[5:13] Yes, I know I'm slightly but I hardly think. Oh come on,
[5:15] Nick, it'll be fun out there anyway. I love horses, all
[5:17] right, but don't expect me to pay your betting losses. You're strictly on
[5:21] your own out there. Oh, it's always a thrill to me to be
[5:32] in the paddock where you can see the horses close to gosh, there's such
[5:36] beautiful things. You certainly are. Oh, there's the colonel in this party.
[5:40] Let's roll over there. There's a wife too. Yeah, it looks
[5:44] more interested than the young man beside her that she does in the colonel.
[5:46] Maybe she is. He's much better looking, not so old either. Hello,
[5:49] Colonel Pembered, how are you? Oh? Hello Carter? Fine?
[5:51] Thanks? I believe you know my wife I don't, but I'm happy to
[5:56] thank you. Mister Carter. This is miss Bowen. I do know you
[6:00] what a beautiful horse is that yours kennel? Yes, Miss Bowen, that's
[6:02] Speed Queen, the winner of the next race. How do you know that,
[6:05] colonel? Because she's ready, you run the legs off every other horse
[6:09] in the race. Better put something down on it. I'll believe a horse
[6:12] is really going to win when I see her trainer putting up some of his
[6:14] own money. Well, you'd see that right now, except that I never
[6:16] allow my employees to build on any race in which we have an envy.
[6:19] That right, Dison, that's right. It's only that rule of yours.
[6:23] It's keeping me from picking up a fortune on this race. I still say
[6:26] I'll believe it when I see it. The end of the race is the
[6:29] time to tell how good Speed Queen really is. Shall we go, Patsy
[6:31] m hmm, right to the bedding window. I want to put two dollars
[6:35] down on Speed Queen. She's too beautiful to lose a race. Sonny Boy
[6:48] filling the lead with nim Rod and Golden Spurs behind. Funny Boy pulling away
[6:54] from Nimrod looks like a strong winner. But you can't tell you a horse
[6:57] tim Rod is getting a good lead on Golden spur well, Petsy, come
[7:00] run, Speed, Queen. There's pretty far back on the bunch. If
[7:02] I can see this straight from here, doesn't mean a thing, you know
[7:05] it, nothing except that you're probably way out two dollars. I am not
[7:09] going to win. She's starting to come out, say she is at that,
[7:14] But now things need to be changing. Speed Queen, who's been hanging
[7:16] in the back of the bunch so far, it's beginning to pull out,
[7:19] passing the other horses. And if they were standing still, sunny boys don't
[7:23] leave with men right flows behind now Speed Queen at third and still growing from
[7:28] almost incredible the way he's running a beat Queen off the ground man when her
[7:32] dogey's mom a wife to get around the leaders are too bad. He's coming
[7:36] out and making neck with Funny Boy and coming down the bread together. There
[7:40] now be Queen pulling ahead. She's got looks very possible. Now, Betsy,
[7:48] he's certainly showing her heels to the rest of them. If you can
[7:50] pass sunny Boy now she may make it. That was awful, Nick.
[8:07] What do you suppose happened to speed Queen's jockey? We may never know,
[8:09] Patsy, he wasn't dead when he fell off his horse. The horse is
[8:13] coming up behind him trampled him to death. Do you suppose he had heart?
[8:16] Maybe and maybe not. When a horse that isn't a favorite suddenly comes
[8:20] up from behind to take the lead away from the favorite, and then something
[8:22] happens that that's the favorite win after all, I'm just naturally a little suspicious
[8:26] high neck. Oh hi, at Tien, do you have anything on this
[8:30] race? Patsy had two dollars on Speed Queen, but he saw what happened,
[8:33] as she must have gotten the same tip I did. The Speed Queen
[8:37] was all set to win, but the big money didn't know it. I
[8:39] was so sure the tip was good that I put one hundred bucks in her
[8:41] nose. Oh here's one ticket I'll never cash you. Wait a minute,
[8:46] Wait a minute. Huh, don't tear up that ticket. You don't want
[8:48] it, Give it to me, will you? Oh you want a superna,
[8:50] Sure you're welcome to it and anything it can collect on it. Thanks.
[8:54] You know, Speed Queen had one that'll be worth fifteen hundred bucks.
[8:58] Now it's just waste paper. Perhaps you're right, Jim, but I have
[9:01] a hunch. Come on, Patsy, let's stroll down to the payoff windows.
[9:16] Well, look who's at one hundred dollars window. Pinky Demes never had
[9:20] over five dollars on a race in his life, Nick, Would you look
[9:24] at the handful of tickets he has. Those are all winners. It must
[9:26] be five or six thousand dollars there easily that much, no question about it,
[9:31] Patsy. Somebody knew something was going to happen to make sunny by the
[9:35] winner, and for the sake of the poor dead jockey and speed Queen.
[9:37] I'm going to find out what it was. It did happen. Wait a
[9:39] minute, I'll be right back, Okay, Pinky, Pinky Demes, huh
[9:45] oh, you got it, and you give a guy that jumps grabbing at
[9:48] him. Don't wait. I didn't think you touts ever believed in your own
[9:50] tip, Spinky, not enough to bet all that money on him. You
[9:52] got me ruined. Connor, I didn't have noth none of this race.
[9:56] It was just hanging around. I only got bust fear back to town.
[10:01] I hold one hundred dollars ticket on speed Queen. I hate to be a
[10:05] sucker. Sucker, Oh yeah, yeah. Jill was tough about the jack
[10:09] falling dead just when he was winning like that. Yeah, lucky for those
[10:11] betting on sunny Boy. Yeah yeah, look, Carter, I gotta go
[10:16] see it. Thirteen to one. The ticket I have is worth thirteen hundred
[10:18] dollars. I'm keeping that ticket. Might be a smart idea for somebody to
[10:24] buy it from me. Huh. I'll be in my office until four o'clock.
[10:28] After four will be too late. I don't know what you're talking about.
[10:33] Just pass the word along. That's all all right, Patty, that's
[10:37] enough racing for one day. Let's get back to the office. I really
[10:50] think you're going to hear from somebody before four o'clock. Is that? Now
[10:56] we have pollers, I'll get it. Yeah, okay, thanks very much.
[11:03] Not a caller. Neaked package package, I tell you, well,
[11:11] what is it? Look? Somebody's e oh, Nick, how horrible.
[11:18] There's a note says Pinky listen too hard. You won't hear you the next
[11:24] time you talk too much if you do so. I was right. It
[11:28] was murder. You mean speed Queen's jockey exactly. Give me the phone,
[11:35] Nick, I don't know you will. Hello, there you go, put
[11:41] Tim Rock on. What are you going to do? Oh? Tim This
[11:46] is Nick Carter works on your mind. Got a hot special for your final
[11:50] edition. Quote me this way. The death of speed Queen's jockey in the
[11:56] third race this afternoon was not accidental. It was murder. An run to
[12:01] just that way and quote me. Then you'll be in the clear. Yes
[12:05] you can. I've never given you a bump stair yet have I? Thanks
[12:09] to him so long i'd understand something. Maybe somebody will try to buy one
[12:15] hundred dollars ticket for me yet, Nick, you can't mean you're trying to
[12:18] blackmail somebody and they paying you fifteen hundred dollars for not investigating. Oh,
[12:22] you know me better than that. I hope somebody will try to pay me
[12:24] the money so I can get a lead on where to look for the jockey's
[12:26] murderer, because it was murder and no mistake. Well, we've never known
[12:37] Nick to be wrong when he finally makes up his mind, But this looks
[12:39] like pretty slim evidence on which to make a charge of murder. Is Nick
[12:43] on the right track or is he sticking his neck out looking for trouble?
[12:46] Can he prove the charge that he's just made, and how will he go
[12:50] about it? We'll see in just a moment. If you're a homemaker,
[12:54] you have every reason to take pride in a home that fairly gleams with the
[12:58] evidence of careful attention, and every wood and linoleum surface in your home wheel
[13:03] gleam when you use Linex Clear Gloss Varnish because Linux Clear Gloss lends a lustrous
[13:07] finish that keeps its beauty a long long time. It lessens your housework amazingly
[13:13] too, for it's so easy to keep clean. Dirt stays on the surface
[13:16] where you can wipe it away in a jiffy, and Linux Clear Gloss is
[13:20] so simple to apply. You just brush it on and it dries without brush
[13:24] marks to an elastic, transparent finish that wears and wears, a finish which
[13:28] protects every surface to which it's applied. Yes, it's a fact. Linux
[13:33] Clear Gloss protects all the wood and linoleum surfaces in your home against damage by
[13:39] boiling water, hot grease, fruit acids, perfume, even alcohol. In
[13:43] every way, it's truly the super varnish. Ask for it by name at
[13:48] your dealers Linux ln X Linx Clear Gloss Varnish you will find all three great
[13:56] Linax Home Brighteners and Kemtne the miracle wall finish at hardware, paint and department
[14:01] stores everywhere. Now back to our story. Nick is convinced that the death
[14:13] of the jockey on Speed Queen was not an accident. In fact, he
[14:16] believes it was deliberate murder. But it's going to be a long, hard
[14:18] road proving it. It's late the same day as we look in on Lieutenant
[14:22] Riley's office at headquarters, just as Nick drops in, how are you,
[14:26] Nick? I haven't seen you around here in dodgy Age. Riley? How
[14:28] many murders does it take to interest you murders? I haven't heard about any
[14:33] murders, but if you tell me where you hit the bodies, I'll be
[14:35] glad you look into it for you. One of the bodies was the jockey
[14:39] in the third race this afternoon. How's your report on him? Unavoidable in
[14:43] the doc says it was a heart attack and the other horses was bunched so
[14:46] close they couldn't get out of his way when he fell off. Better change
[14:50] that to lead poisoning, rally lead poison. You're nuts? Can you prove
[14:54] it? No? Not yet. The docs didn't mention any bullet warns,
[14:58] that's why not? How could he with a jock his head all smashed up?
[15:01] But another thing, a small time tout by the name of Pinky Dems
[15:03] won't be doing any more touting from now on. Why not? He's dead
[15:07] murdered. If you don't believe me, put out a pickup order on him
[15:09] and see if any of your boys can find him. Do you know anything,
[15:13] Nicker? Is this all guess work? Two murders in the last couple
[15:16] of hours, rally, and I may be the third. Yeah, come
[15:18] in, I get it rightly. I'm mad and I want hello Colonel Pemburg
[15:22] or something bothering you? Oh it's you. Yes, you're bothering me.
[15:26] Why do you have to shoot off your big boss of the papers where you
[15:28] Did you approve of murder? Colonel? No? I don't. I don't
[15:31] approve of rumors of murder either. I demand that you retract your accusations or
[15:35] produce some concrete proof to back them up. I didn't accuse you of anything,
[15:37] Colonel. I didn't say you did. It's a reflection on my stable,
[15:41] on the glorious sport of her bread racing. It's really all your fault,
[15:43] you know. My fault. Yes, you recommended Speed Queen so highly
[15:48] that I watched the race much more closely than you you wal and what I
[15:50] saw led me to make the statement you see there in the paper. You
[15:52] will say the death of my jockey was murdered. I do. I say
[15:56] you're a fool. Maybe, but I'm gonna keep on saying it's murder until
[16:00] someone does something about it. But Nick, you you must have something to
[16:02] pack up this claim of yours. I have, but none of it's evidence
[16:04] yet. For one thing, don't forget with Speed Queen out of the way,
[16:08] Sonny Boy won that race at very attractive odds. John Gailey, Sonny
[16:11] Boy's owner, made a sweet out of money on the deal. John gainley'
[16:15] is a crafty old bird, but he wouldn't murder my jockey, A Colonel
[16:18] Pember. Before I go any further with this, I'd like to talk to
[16:21] your trainer, Dyerson. Is it Deerson is no longer my trainer. I
[16:23] fired him a couple of hours ago, fired him. Why you saw the
[16:26] race. You saw the way Speed Queen's jockey pulled white on the turn,
[16:30] failed to take the fence. Probably just missus cue. That's all My trainers
[16:33] are responsible for all such things. I will not tolerate such blood. That's
[16:37] a little thin, Colonel, are you sure you didn't use that as an
[16:41] excuse to get rid of this? You'll see here color. I don't have
[16:42] to, Carmian Caban. I demand that you. Hello, Pembert, are
[16:49] you responsible for this? This stuff in the paper? I am not What
[16:52] makes you think I'd do a thing like that. It sounds like one of
[16:55] your trees entirelym my idea, mister Ganley. Oh what you have two butts
[17:00] on speed Queen's nude? My gripe, mister Gailey, is that a jockey
[17:04] who was supporting his mother and a little sister was killed so somebody could make
[17:07] money. And I don't like things like that. Oh so I have one
[17:11] hundred dollars ticket on speed Queen's Nose That isn't worth anything now, Oh blackmail?
[17:17] I get it just because my horse was a better horse than pember It's
[17:21] you kick when you win. Your horse was beaten to a stamp still when
[17:23] a rifle bullet gave him a chance to win. You think you're staring,
[17:26] mister Ganley. I'm only trying to do one thing. I want to know
[17:30] who kills speed Queen's jockey and why I was there this afternoon. I saw
[17:34] nothing to indicate murder. You men have ever seen a rifle bullet actually at
[17:38] work? But the medical report cost steel jacket. A bullet won't need much
[17:41] evidence of its passage in the skull it smashed a few seconds later by a
[17:45] dozen iron shot hoops. Oh, rally, you gotta have to start on.
[17:49] I don't see where to begin. There's no evidence. Okay, don't
[17:53] blame me if the commissioner gets on the phone and starts asking questions, was
[17:56] Nick Kak come in? Colonel Pembert just a minute? I want to talk
[18:00] lu Cann't rack you come on, Carnor. I want to talk to you
[18:03] anyway privately. Why of course, mister Gailey, I'll be seeing you rally.
[18:07] It's a long. It's a long, colonel. Now, if you're
[18:21] stepping my car with me for a minute, we can talk quietly, all
[18:25] right, But I don't see what you and I have to talk about.
[18:27] It won't take with a minute now, all right, Carter, what's your
[18:33] game? I told you that upstairs. I don't believe you. You're sore
[18:37] because you failed to when you're better on speed, Queen, you don't really
[18:41] care for the jockey who was killed. You're welcome to think anything you'll like,
[18:45] mister Gailey, you think if you talk long enough and loudly enough,
[18:48] somebody's going to pay you to shut up. Go on. Unfortunately for me,
[18:53] your accusation points directly at me, as the owner of the winning horse.
[18:57] I profited by the he's dead, but I certainly didn't murder him.
[19:03] No one has accused you of murder yet, but they will. There'll be
[19:07] fingers pointed at me. There'll be investigations by the racing Commission. How much
[19:12] was the ticket you have on that rage? One hundred dollars? A thirteen
[19:17] two hundred share, thirteen hundred dollars? They are I trust. We understand
[19:23] each other. Now. I understand that you've just given me thirteen hundred dollars,
[19:30] and I also understand that a jockey was killed in cold blood. But
[19:33] Carl, he said we had nothing to talk about, mister Gailey, and
[19:34] I was right. So long. Oh there you are, Nick, Missus
[19:49] pemble its been waiting over an hour to see you. Hello, Missus Pemblett.
[19:52] What's on your mind? Could I speak to you alone. Whatever you
[19:56] can tell me, you can tell Patsy we work together. Well, all
[20:00] right, mister Carter, I know everything. My husband told me this afternoon
[20:04] that you've been spying on me. Yes, Colonel Pembert was in a dreadful
[20:07] temper. He fired Dick, mister Deson, and then told me about having
[20:11] you follow me. So that's why he fired Deerson. Yes, I don't
[20:17] know what came over me. I really loved the colonel, but mister Dearson
[20:19] swept me off my feet. I guess I'm just weak. Why have you
[20:23] come here now? I must know, mister Carter. Have you told the
[20:27] colonel that I pawned my necklace this morning? Why is that important? If
[20:32] the colonel knew that I pawned my pearls and gave the money to Dick to
[20:34] bed on speed Queen, then he must be the one behind the jockey's murder.
[20:37] He wanted to be sure that Dick would lose, because it is one
[20:41] I was planning to run away with him on the winning as we'd make.
[20:45] Are you saying that your husband killed the jockey so you and Deerson couldn't run
[20:48] away together? What must be there? Must love me very much. I
[20:52] thought he didn't care. Did the Colonel tell you I'd been following you,
[20:56] spying on you? We said he'd hired a private detective to report everything I
[20:59] did. Missus Pember, I'm a private detective, but I wouldn't touch one
[21:03] of those divorce investigations if I starved at death. When these things I've told
[21:10] you, you didn't know them, not positively? You give me some valuable
[21:15] information. Thank you. I'd guessed that most of it, but had no
[21:18] confirmation. Nicholas Carter's all this, mister Carter busy? Just now? May
[21:26] I take a message for him? Very well? I'll helen. That was
[21:32] short and sweet? What was it? It was Colonel Pember? Colonel Pember.
[21:36] Yes, he said to tell you, Nick that he was sending you
[21:37] thirteen hundred dollars by messenger. He said you'd know what he meant. So
[21:41] the Colonel's decided that he can't ignore my charges and he wants me to drop
[21:45] them. Doesn't that prove what I just said, Mister Carter, I don't
[21:49] know, does it? He must be behind it? Oh, the poor
[21:52] man. I must go him at once. Better not tell him you were
[21:56] here when his message came. Oh I won't Betsy had been a mutual protective
[22:04] agency. Joe Brown. Okay, maybe it's not blackmail, mate, but
[22:08] it's certainly producing results. Originally I let it be known that I'd lost one
[22:14] hundred dollars on speed Queen, just to see what reaction that stirred up.
[22:17] Wanted to get a lead on the killer. Now the money comes in by
[22:19] itself, well we'll give it to the Red Cross. There's no better use
[22:23] for any money than that. Hello, lister Joe Brown, Please wish I
[22:27] had more to give him? Just a minute, Nick Carter calling, Thanks,
[22:33] Hello, Joe. Have you finished that job for Colonel Pembert yet?
[22:37] And his wife? His wife and Dick Dison? Oh yeah, just delivers
[22:42] the final report. Why if you finished with it, you won't mind giving
[22:45] me a Dierson's address? Will you you move from his old place? Recently?
[22:48] I find and left no forwarding address. Willow Road? You know the
[22:55] Colonel Bouncer just a little while ago. Yes, I know, forty seven
[22:57] East Willow Road. Thanks Joe much for you someday so long. What makes
[23:02] you think Colonel Timber's train is mixed up in his mid How could he get
[23:04] in on it? He has some information I want. That's all. Oh,
[23:07] well, now, so you better drive me out to forty seven East
[23:11] Willow Road and fast, mister dearson, he's left already, any idea where
[23:23] he's gone, no stuff, and went out. Expressman's coming for his stuff
[23:29] in a few minutes. Now he's meeting him at the station. This is
[23:32] stuff here, yes, and three bags and trump mind if I look at
[23:36] them? Suit yourself. That's a new trunk. Yes, the bags look
[23:42] quite new too. I wonder how many tags. Here's a tag on the
[23:47] trunk. William Stewart, seven to eleven Fourth Street, Evansville, Indiana.
[23:52] Yes, a new trunk. And yes, well what is it? Come
[24:00] on, Betsy, let's meet dearson at the station. See this headline?
[24:11] Dearson, huh what? Oh it's you? I said, Have you seen
[24:18] the headlines? Says speed? Queen's jockey was murdered? Who said, so
[24:23] I do? What do you know about it? Practically everything? How come
[24:27] you know so much? I get around and I keep my eyes and ears
[24:32] open. For instance, I know that there's some connection between you and a
[24:37] certain William Stewart of Evansville, Indiana. What are you talking about? The
[24:42] tag on your trunk, your nice new trunk, the trunk with the bloodstains
[24:48] on it. I don't give your hands in side this. You don't,
[24:52] I'll shoot first. That's better. I suppose we forget about taking the train
[24:59] and Carlin at Riley instead. He thinks I'm nuts. But when you tell
[25:03] him what you know, he'll find out I was right all along. Will
[25:15] you get to the point, Carter, You didn't ask us here just to
[25:18] talk about the weather. Very well, now that mister Gain lives here,
[25:21] let's get on with it. You have each paid me thirteen hundred dollars to
[25:25] hush up the investigation into the death of speed Queen's jockey. You thought I
[25:27] was blackmailing you. If you'd known me better, you'd have known I can't
[25:32] be bribed. I took the money and I'm turning it over to the Red
[25:34] Cross. But I kept on looking around, and now I have the whole
[25:38] story. If you've got the answer to this business, you can turn my
[25:41] money over to the Red Cross and welcome, and I'll put as much more
[25:45] with it. And that goes for me. Carter. Now, now what
[25:48] is the story? Repleas this missus Pembert Ponder necklace and gave the three thousand
[25:52] dollars to Dyson the bet on Speed Queen. He thought Dyson was in love
[25:56] with it, but he wasn't. Just wanted the money. So we bet
[25:59] the money and honey Boy to win, and arranged for having Speed Queen's jockey
[26:03] shot at the turn. If Speed Queen took the lead. Pinky Deemes put
[26:07] the bets down for him and collected his winnings. But I saw Pinky do
[26:11] it, and I spoke to him. I told him I should expect some
[26:14] action by four o'clock. Instead of what I expected, I got Pinky's ear
[26:18] as a warning to lay off. And I suppose that when I paid you
[26:22] that thirteen hundred dollars, you thought I was behind it. No, Gainley,
[26:26] I knew that you paid me to keep the scandal out of the papers
[26:27] if possible. You didn't want racing to get a black eye. Yes,
[26:30] that was it. And you, Colonel Pembert, you paid me thirteen hundred
[26:34] dollars to keep your wife from learning what a fool she'd been, didn't you.
[26:37] Yes, I knew she'd made a fool of herself over Deerson, and
[26:41] he wanted to protect her. I love her and she loves you, Colonel,
[26:45] I know that. Can you prove any of this car, not much
[26:48] of it unless Deerson confesses, which I feel sure he'll do. So why
[26:52] should he confess naked? You can't prove anything on him, because there's one
[26:55] thing we can hang on him, fairly and squarely. What's that Pinky's death.
[27:00] If you were to look in the trunk which Dison just bought, you'd
[27:02] find Pinky's body minus one, here being shipped to what is undoubtedly a fake
[27:06] address, never mind new traces of blood on the trunk when I examined it.
[27:10] That alone will take care of our mister Dison, who seems to have
[27:14] double crossed ever when he came in contact with except himself next to me,
[27:18] as if Fate had double crossed him. The way it turns out, quite
[27:21] right, Betsy, Fate is away of double crossing those who don't obey the
[27:25] laws of right and wrong. In just a moment, Nick and Patsy will

[29:00] Well, Nick, would you care to give us a peek in the next
[29:02] week's story he'd be delighted to he's been waiting for just that very question.
[29:06] Thanks for the build up, Patsy. That's a story of an actor,
[29:10] an actor who, for some strange reasons, seemed to be followed by a
[29:12] constant procession of almost fatal accidents. He was hurt several times, but always
[29:17] escaped death. What was it all about? The manager of the theater,
[29:19] A friend of mine called me in to find the answer to that same question,
[29:22] which Nick found, of course, and just in the nick of time,
[29:26] Well what do you call it? Nick? Death behind the Scenes or
[29:29] the Mystery of the Persecuted Actor? Complete details next week, So long,
[29:33] So long everybody, and so long you both, Patsy, Nick, be
[29:37] seeing you next week, same as usual, next week, the same time.
[29:48] Listen to another curious experience of Nick Carter Master Detective entitled Death behind the
[29:55] Scene or Nick Carter and the Mystery of the Persecuted Actor. Nick Carter Master
[30:07] Detective is featured in Street and Smith magazines. Lon Clark is starred as Nick,
[30:11] with Helen Chot as Patsy. Original music is played by Lou White,
[30:15] and the programs are written and directed by Jack McGregor. Nick Carter Master Detective
[30:22] is presented at this time and over these same stations each week by the three
[30:26] great Linux Home Brightness, Linux Clear, Gloss Varnish, Linax Cream Polish,
[30:32] and Linax Self Polishing Wax created by ACME America's great producer of Acme Fine Quality
[30:38] Paints. This is Ken Powell speaking for the thousands of Linux dealers all over
[30:44] America and saying, so long until next week. This is mutual welcome back.
[31:04] Well. A great episode and it really illustrates what I like about Nick
[31:10] Carter. This is Nick Carter at his best. You have a pretty clever
[31:15] mystery, and then you just have Nick continuing to be dairying and audacious,
[31:22] and really this episode illustrates a lot of what's really unique about Nick Carter as
[31:30] a character. Because, probably with the exception of Nero Wolf and Sherlock Holmes,
[31:37] of the characters we've heard on the Great Detectives of Old Time Radio,
[31:41] none of them are particularly famous within the context of their own world. Nick
[31:47] Carter is, and kind of see the power of that with his ability to
[31:52] go to the press in a way that character like Sam Spade couldn't or even
[31:57] Sherlock Holmes probably would not. I'm not saying one way is better than another,
[32:02] but certainly this is a unique perspective In next personality, I just as
[32:07] I listened to the show and I hear the things that he does, I'm
[32:12] just like, Wow, that's an interesting approach, taking the one hundred dollars
[32:17] ticket to try to see what sort of bait he got. I also like
[32:22] the way that the marriage plot was dealt with, and that the way it
[32:27] turned out was a little was quite a bit different from what the vast majority
[32:31] of detective shows do in terms of the view particularly of a straying younger woman
[32:38] married to an older man. A truly enjoyable episode, and of course next
[32:45] week we'll be back with even more Nick Carter Tomorrow join us for another episode
[32:51] of That Man with the Action Packed Expense account. Yours truly, Johnny Doller,
