[0:56] to pick up your digital copy of my short story, Announcer Prevention. It's
[1:03] an interesting story and it mixes detective fiction and with a little bit of science
[1:07] fiction. It is available for your kindle for nine to nine sants and we're
[1:11] working on the audiobook version as we speak, and that's kind of introduced to
[1:17] some of the characters we have in Slime Incorporated, the first novel that's out,
[1:21] so I do encourage you to check that out. All right, Well,
[1:25] Today's episode of the Adventures of Philip Marlowe. The we played the first
[1:32] episode last week. The next two episodes are missing, so here is today's
[1:38] episode from July eighth of nineteen forty seven. The title is The King of
[1:45] in Yellow and it was originally written for Raymond Chandler's character of Steve Gasey,
[1:52] and it was never actually in book form anyway, Redone for Marlowe, but
[1:57] it was done here as a Philip Marlowe story and also in the nineteen eighties
[2:02] Philip Marlow TV series. So Here Now is the King in Yellow or the
[2:07] Safety of Your Smile? Used Pepsident twice a day, See your Dentist twice
[2:13] a year. Leber Brothers Company presents the Pepsident program The Adventures of Philip Marlow
[2:30] starring Van Heflin, Philip Marlow the famous private detective of Murder, My Sweet
[2:39] and the Lady in the Lake, Created by Raymond Chandler, brought to you
[2:44] on the air by Pepsident and starring MGM's dynamic young actor Van Heflin. While
[3:00] families all over America I have named their favorite toothpaste New Pepsident with arium new
[3:06] fresh tasting Pepsident with a new cool mity flavor. It's preferred three to one
[3:12] over any other toothpaste. It's true with families all over America. New Pepsident
[3:16] is a favorite three to one. Families from coast to coast recently compared New
[3:22] Pepsident with a toothpaste they were using at home. They preferred New Pepsidant by
[3:27] an overwhelming average of three to one over any other brand they tribe. These
[3:31] families three to one said new Pepsident tastes better, makes breath cleaner, makes
[3:38] teeth brighter. Yes, families three to one say New Pepsident taste better,
[3:42] makes breath cleaner, makes teeth brighter. Yet New Pepsident toothpaste for your family
[3:47] right away. Al Van Heflin in the Adventures of Philip Marlow Hollywood. After
[4:09] midnight it was like any other city. After midnight. Night moves in and
[4:13] the city becomes hushed and stealthy. The nightclubs close up one by one,
[4:18] but now and then the police whistle and the prowl car sirens serenade the sleeper.
[4:28] If you've got any coppin at all, you get on edge and you
[4:30] have to get dressed and go out and walk it off to relax. I
[4:35] was relaxing past the swank Carleton Hotel and the Sunset Strip about one am,
[4:41] when all of a sudden, recess was over her MM got you, ma.
[4:48] It was George Millar, the quiet spoken night clerk of the Carlton,
[4:53] hailing me from the doorway, probably to mucia Melachrino. No, it was
[4:58] wrong. Look Marlo, you're very busy right now. Why I'm alarm if
[5:04] I may be? As Cage's all that, we've got some trouble on me,
[5:09] whereas Curly you're a fearless house deck. Tonight he has to have a
[5:13] hangle. What's the beef on floor? A King lear party? Do you
[5:16] know him? Kingle a party? Oh that's the sweetest trumpet the side of
[5:19] Gabriel? Is he tanding here tonight? He's in the corridor on the eighth
[5:24] floor, dressed in yellow pajamas and his trumpet. There's a girl with him
[5:28] and they put him on a jam session. I suppose the King rejects my
[5:30] diplomatic notes. Well, get rough, but only if you have to any
[5:36] thanks. The guy was such an ear for music. Got to listen to
[5:40] reason. I'll be down five minutes. And so hey, King, hey,
[6:01] King, that's all boy? Oh stop mellow mellow King and yellow mosh
[6:06] malzin no more more? All right, King, the party is over?
[6:11] Hey were you addressing me? Peasant? I said, wrap it up?
[6:15] Can it put it on ice? The show is over? Ha conm King
[6:18] King kongk that's what he is king, konk let him have it? King?
[6:23] Then fed to a noseyhow stick as follows? All right, now look
[6:28] yellow pants, wrap up your bugle and buzz off. Now hit the grit.
[6:31] Oh, it's er than a forty cent steak, don't you. Let's'll
[6:35] make it soft and tender. Here, get him, boy can get him
[6:40] a cat for me. Hit me with that trumpet, will you? Ok?
[6:43] King? Come on, get up, get dressed and get out.
[6:47] How can he's out cold? I'll be glad to pack for him and you
[6:51] get back to your room. Listen, cop right, I don't have to
[6:53] do it any going, sister, Come on jump The door at a room
[7:02] eight fifteen was a jar. I went in and began tossing a lot of
[7:05] that yellow silk that the king liked so well into his suitcases. Something at
[7:11] this small desk stopped me. Tucked under the corner of the desk blotter was
[7:15] a note. It was assembled from words and letters cut out of newspapers and
[7:19] pasted on a telegraph blank. It said ten grand by Thursday night, Leo
[7:26] party or else her brother. I slipped the note in my pocket and went
[7:32] out in the corridor. Just as the King staggered past me into his room.
[7:36] I could get an infection from the dirty look he gave me as he
[7:40] slammed the door after him. The door two sweets away opened a crack and
[7:46] then shut again very quickly, and went over and knocked bad and copper.
[7:51] I want to talk to you. I want to hear from you. Okay,
[7:55] here I come, sister, ready or not? Help blow you down?
[7:58] So help me. I'll let you have it. Lay that pistol down,
[8:01] babe. Come on, come on? Will you pick up what you
[8:03] didn't count? And what would the little girl be doing with a twenty five
[8:07] automatic? I wonder a girl needs protection with insects like you around. Look
[8:11] what's your name? Little bulpie? Okay? But what does little boy blue
[8:16] with a horn mean to you? I admire his work? Do you know?
[8:18] King Leopolo? What are you doing in a place like this? I
[8:20] can tell you can't afford it. What's your angle? I want to soap
[8:22] contest? All right? Baby? You want it that way? What are
[8:26] you gonna do? I'm gonna make a phone call. We caught your michel.
[8:33] Hello, desk malar is Marlowe. I'm calling for the lady in room
[8:39] eight eleven. She's checking out. I had a little trouble up there.
[8:50] Mallow, Your two noisy guests will be checking out any minute. Okay,
[8:54] Well, I hate for things to happen on my shift. Well, the
[8:58] king bopped me with his bugle and the girl had a gun. Nice people,
[9:01] How come you put a floozie like that girl so close to the king?
[9:05] Well, I didn't another thing. Look, there was a receipt for
[9:09] rent to miss Maryland DeLorme on the telephone table in her room. Well,
[9:13] that wasn't the name. She gave Quilla apartment to eleven Ridgeland Apartments, Cord
[9:18] Street, La. She lives right in town and a cheap neighborhood, but
[9:20] she checks in here at a price you can't afford and gives a phony name.
[9:24] Now why why Cord Street, where Maryland Alarmee lived was old Town,
[9:41] party Town, Crooktown. It was afternoon when I got off the cogwheel car
[9:46] that climbs the steep hill to where the Ridgeland apartment sat on the top of
[9:50] Bunker Hill and went up dim, dusty stairs to apartment to eleven, and
[9:56] I tapped on the door. There was no answer, so I tried the
[10:00] door it was unlocked. The room inside was dim with stagnant gloom. Marilyn
[10:09] Delome was in. I didn't talk to her, though, I didn't think
[10:13] she'd want to make much conversation with those blue bruises about her throat where she
[10:18] had been strangled. I got out of there fast, whipping off door knobs
[10:24] like Ray he polishing apples for his boss. I found King lea party at
[10:37] his job at the club Belvedere. He was relaxing at a table in the
[10:41] bar with a kind of a girl commonly referred to as a knockout. She
[10:46] looked tall, and her hair was the color of a brushfire seen through clouds
[10:50] of dust. I pulled in my chin and then walked over to the table.
[10:58] Hell, Holy are you my stew You remember me? I'm sorry,
[11:01] I can't say that. Why you dirty keyhole snooper? Please don't start anything
[11:07] again. Left a certain little note in your hotel room last That wasn't all
[11:13] that dame with you. It changed it down. He didn't take this with
[11:16] you. There's not much snap in that punch. King, would you like
[11:22] to try it again? I have had some drinks. I'll see you later
[11:26] when I'm okay. See you later to the lorus after the floor show.
[11:33] I'm I'm sorry, miss you made as conspicuous enough as it is. Wait
[11:37] a minute, thanks, That's what I get for being a little gentleman,
[11:46] letting him pepper me without a comeback. Oh, he's always spoiling for a
[11:50] fight. I just can't control these dukes. Can't you better have a drink?
[11:56] All right? Cook with bitters. That's what I love about Hollywood.
[12:01] You meet so many eccentrics. Yeah, but you see, I'm the kind
[12:05] of a guy who starts with a short beer and wakes up in Shanghai with
[12:07] a full beard? Is this on me? Or is it on you?
[12:15] Well? That depends. Well, how champagne Mom's cordon rouge? Shall we
[12:20] say him? It's on you, it's on me? Coke with bitters.
[12:26] How did you get to know King Leo Party? Oh? I just happened
[12:28] to throw him out of his hotel last night. Oh how's detective? Huh?
[12:33] No? No filling Philip Marlow, private investigators, the general tag?
[12:37] How did you happen to get to know the King? I one sang in
[12:41] his band, but not for long. Well then look tell me. Would
[12:46] it be hard for a woman to get to him only if he was surrounded
[12:50] by a wall of fire, if the woman had a gun. Why I
[12:54] found this threat note on his desk last night. It asked for ten thousand
[12:58] dollars or else and is signed her brother. Well, well, yes,
[13:05] a woman with a gun could get to him and everybody would give her a
[13:09] great big hand. Mm hmm. Well I'll skip that coc and bitters and
[13:15] say good day and thank you. Crista Belle. The name is Dolores.
[13:18] Oh good afternoon, Miss scurry Kiosa delais Kiosa, Ohosa, very well,
[13:26] miss Kyosa formal. Aren't you so long? Delas a long? Philip?
[13:33] Did I hear anything? I'll toss it your way. The evening papers carried
[13:46] a squib about Marilyn Delormey found strangled in her Court Street apartment. That was
[13:50] all dead end until about one o'clock in the morning when the telephone started having
[13:56] hysterics on my night table. Oh, Philip, this delorious glory, glory.
[14:07] Oh oh yeah, sure, you come over to my place right away.
[14:09] Twenty four to twelve rand Flu Street, below Fountain a bungalow Court.
[14:15] Mine is the last one in line. But Sugar, what's the matter?
[14:18] Lauris, Look, what what's the matter? King Leo Party is here too,
[14:22] Kingleo Party? You passed out of my ben. It's absurd, isn't
[14:26] it. Yeah, it's absurd. It cost you twenty bucks? All right,
[14:30] but hurry, please hurry right over? Phone calls in the dead to
[14:35] night. I should have been a midwife. Oh, come in, Philip,
[14:54] I'm sorry I woke you at this hour. That's okay. I always
[14:58] get up around this time. And how to take my bitters and answer phone
[15:01] calls? Where is he? Oh? May I have a cigarette? Sure?
[15:07] Thanks? Right? Where did you say it was? Now? Am
[15:18] I dan? Oh? Philip? Philip isn't drunk at all? Did you
[15:22] really think he was drunk? He's dead? What the king is dead?
[15:28] Don't live them with my gun, you, lady Wins the large keeper.
[15:37] Don take him on this goe and look at him. You are listening to
[15:56] the Adventures of Philip Marlowe, starring Van Heflin. Yes, families all over
[16:02] America have named their favorite toothpaste new Pepsident with invigorating erium foam, New fresh
[16:08] tasting Pepsident with a new cool minty flavor. It's preferred three to one over
[16:15] any other toothpaste. It's true. Families all over America say New Pepsident is
[16:21] their favorite three to one. The paul A Thompson family Summer Street, Stanford,
[16:25] Connecticut, preferred New Pepsident on every single count. The Thompsons say New
[16:30] Pepsident tastes best of all, makes breath cleaner, makes teeth brighter on all
[16:36] these counts by an overwhelming average of three to one. Families prefer New Pepsident
[16:41] over any other toothpaste they tried. It's a fact, families three to one
[16:47] saying New Pepsident tastes better, makes breath cleaner, and makes teeth brighter.
[16:52] Remember this is not just our opinion, it's the honest conviction of the Thompsons
[16:56] and other families who compared New Pepsident with a toothpaste they were using at home.
[17:02] Get New Pepsident, the only toothpaste containing rium. Get it for your
[17:07] family without delay. We continue with the adventures of Philip Harlow starring Van Heflin,
[17:22] who appears by arrangement with Metro Golden Mayre producers of The Hucksters starring Clark
[17:26] Gable. Delais showed me to the den in the back of the house.
[17:48] Trumpetman King Lear Party was lying on the studio couch, large, smooth and
[17:53] artificial looking even in death. A small mouser automatic hung loosely in his right
[17:59] hand. There was a bullet hole in his golden yellow sport coat, right
[18:03] over his heart. Delorius, is this your gun? Yes, someone gave
[18:11] it to me one time. I don't even know how to use it.
[18:15] Oh no, I don't expect you or anyone to believe me. Don't expect
[18:18] anything. Just tell it. Well. I was out laid, I sing
[18:25] at KFQC on a late fifteen minute program. Agatha and I got home about
[18:30] eleven thirty. It was the Cap, my maid. I came into the
[18:33] den for some liquor and fizz water and found him like that, I said,
[18:41] at the home, so she wouldn't find him. Finally, I thought
[18:44] of calling you, Well he got in here. How I don't know.
[18:47] Were you ever in love with him? The King never loved anyone. I
[18:51] ask if you loved him. I hated everything about him. Better to tell,
[18:55] the Cap said is, but Kope said he I gotta help. It
[18:56] is the truth, Delorious. Going out in the other room and buy yourself
[19:02] a drinker. I want to be alone here with tall, dead and handsome
[19:06] going on. After Delores had taken her white face out of that room,
[19:19] I could work better. I went through the King's pocket and found his key
[19:25] ring. One key fit very nicely in the lock of the back door.
[19:29] I went to the living room, where Delores was huddled against the arm of
[19:32] the davenport, trying to become a part of the pattern. Delors, how
[19:37] long has Agatha been with you? Two years? Did you ever steal anything
[19:42] from you? Small things? All? There are nylons now and then I
[19:48] didn't mind. Why, Well she sold the key to somebody, a key
[19:52] to this apartment. Oh what's the difference, Philip, We're wasting time.
[19:56] I'm done for as a nice person. I think it was a lo it
[20:00] was quarrel and I shot him, or that he shot himself over knee.
[20:03] Well, you don't die from the ladder, though your reputation does. And
[20:06] I care about what people think of me. Yeah, well that's what makes
[20:11] me for you again, lady. Thanks Philip. Now, look, suppose
[20:14] you give me a description of Agatha and tell me where she lives. I
[20:17] want to talk to her tonight. I drove down Brighton Avenue looking for the
[20:30] house to Loris had described to me all at once. I slammed on my
[20:33] brakes in the driveway of a vacant house to the small coup de Lorius had
[20:41] described Agatha's car, and that was it. An Agatha did not live in
[20:47] an empty house. So I got out and walked up the gravel driveway and
[20:51] looked into the car, and then I got back in my own car and
[20:56] drove until I found an all night drug store. I phone detected lieutenanty Barra,
[21:03] Hello, Ebert, write this down brighton Avenue, thirty two hundred block
[21:11] west side driveway of empty house, car parked with dead woman in it.
[21:19] When alive answered to the name of Agatha strangled. I went back to the
[21:30] Carleton Hotel where it all started. The night before. Quillen, the head
[21:34] day clerk, was on night duty. That surprised me a little bit.
[21:38] It was two am and very empty, very quiet in a lobby. That
[21:42] was fine. Well, if it is smorrow. The old clues man a
[21:49] good good morning, and triped like that, Hello Quillan, how come you're
[21:53] on duty? Miller went on vacation this am. My brother has a cabinet
[21:56] crestline on the Rawhead Road. I didn't even know I had a brother,
[22:00] now you know? Well, then look, how come an old hotel man
[22:03] like you registers floozies like that Marylynd delure me on the same floor with people
[22:07] like King Leo Party. What you heard me, my host? I didn't
[22:11] register the girl Orleoparty Millard did what you heard me? Well? Why was
[22:17] the room between their rooms empty last night? In times like these, malar
[22:19] had it marked on change plumbing out of whack or something? Why? Well,
[22:25] here's why. A lad with a pass key could have gone into that
[22:27] room and then unlocked the two connecting doors. And then you get to run
[22:32] a bus service between the girl's room and Lea parties? What are you driving
[22:36] at That girl in eighty eleven had a gun and Lea Party had a threat
[22:38] letter last night? Now here's what I want you to do. Call a
[22:41] hotel where Leo Party is staying now and ask if he's there? Why?
[22:44] Because good enough, best reason in the world. Wife, what was uses
[22:48] it? Wait here? In about three minutes, Perlan came back and leaned
[23:00] on the counter again, Leo Party isn't there. I talked to a guy
[23:03] in his sweet It was almost sober. He said, Leoparty got a call
[23:06] about eleven from some girl. What girl? He didn't know, but Leoparty
[23:10] went out priming himself. Okay, thanks cool. Anything to do with that
[23:15] brail you had with Leoparty here last night, No, all in the spirit
[23:18] of boorish mahe that at eight fifteen has a jinx on it. You know,
[23:25] girl shot herself there two years ago. What the girl shot herself?
[23:27] Yeah, yeah, you said that, But what girl? I don't know
[23:30] what her real name was. Look here, Quillan, I want to see
[23:33] your hotel files of that day two years ago and all the newspaper clippings about
[23:36] it. Come on, right, all right, let go of my arm
[23:37] physical culture. I'll get the keys to the record room. I read the
[23:48] hotel files of that day two years ago, and I read the newspaper clippings
[23:52] of that suicide in eight fifteen. Then I asked Quillan just where George Millar's
[23:56] brother had his cabin in the mountains. It was just getting light when I
[24:07] pulled up at the cabin, high against the growth of dagger pine and cedar.
[24:11] Smoke was curling from the chimney. Someone was awake. George Mallar himself
[24:17] opened the door. Marlow, it's good to see you. How'd you ever
[24:22] find us up here? How about some baker? The name the answer and
[24:26] my brief Marlow morning manner is yes as well. I'll wake up my brother
[24:32] and Lali together. You don't have to wake me. Yes, I'm up.
[24:34] Oh, oh, hello, Gay? Who's your friend? George?
[24:38] This is Philip Marlow. You heard me talking to him? Yamana Geff Collie
[24:45] at the name, Yeah, my brother, that's his fighting name. He
[24:48] used to be a heavyweight boxer. Fighter, boxers, dance fighters fight.
[24:56] Let's get coffee started that. Marlow's hungry, So I had a busy night.
[25:00] King Lear party has been bumped off, bumped all lowbrow killed vernacular for
[25:07] murder. The king is dead? Where how in a girl's apartment? Nice
[25:11] girl too? The old suicide gag. But it could ruin the girl.
[25:17] That's lousy. Yeah, yeah, but it won't work. It was murder.
[25:22] What makes you think it was murder? Well, gaff the way I
[25:26] cased the job. The kill was supposed to have been pulled in his room
[25:29] eight fifteen at the Carlton Hotel night before last. Is that a fact though?
[25:33] Yeah? I spoil it by giving the king the marry heave hole before
[25:37] the girl in eighty eleven could get to him, didn't I, George?
[25:44] I guess you did. Yeah, of course it would have been poetic justice
[25:48] if King lear Party had been killed in the same room where a girl committed
[25:52] suicide two years ago, registered as Mary Smith usual name Eve Tally. Did
[25:59] you hear that gaff Tally Eve Tally? I heard it, Mano. So
[26:04] we had a sister named Eve shot herself in eight fifteen at the column.
[26:07] So what soul? George here told me that Quillen registered that professional gun girl
[26:12] in eight fifteen night before last. Oh, no, George registered her.
[26:18] So so George kept the room between the girl and Leo Party vacant and everything
[26:22] was quiet. He had opened the communicating doors, and Marilyn Delomee would walk
[26:26] into the King's room, muffle her twenty five and a pillow and shoot the
[26:30] king and he sleep. How am I doing? Boys? Fine? Marlon?
[26:37] How am I doing again? What do we that guy? How about
[26:40] you even checked? On one eighteen Court Street I found Marilyn Delomy strangled.
[26:45] She knew too much For a few Buckshoe boys got Agatha to call Leo party
[26:49] last night from the radio station. Pretend she was Dolores with an interesting invitation.
[26:55] The king always had a yen for Dolores, and he came running.
[26:57] You shot the king before Dolores came home and left him in her den.
[27:02] Then Gaff got rid of Aga. She knew too much too Bill, Your
[27:04] party was the worst kind of aret. We loved our sister. She fell
[27:10] for him and he threw her out. She killed us. What would you
[27:15] do? Mallo would take his gun, George, don't get between us or
[27:18] behind him. As forty five goes right on through, I'll have to take
[27:25] your gun, Mama. I'll always treat it like your own, won't you.
[27:30] George got it, George, I've got it. Stand out of the
[27:33] way. Does it have to be this way? Gaff? Yeah, it
[27:36] has to be this way, George. George and Gaff, the avengers of
[27:38] innocent girlhood and their righteous indignation shut up lynch mob's tarn feather merchants and other
[27:44] laws under themselves. Take notice, George and Gaff. They wrote the book
[27:48] The Death. There's been enough killing. No death. I won't no death.
[27:53] I'm warning you'll look by deaf. I'm sorry I had to do George,
[28:10] he's dead. I had to do it. I just had to do.
[28:12] You understand on too. He was a killer. He killed three people.
