[1:30] episode of Yours Truly Johnny Dollar from February third, nineteen fifty seven. Here's
[1:37] the Kirby Will Matter from Hollywood. It's time now for Ny Dollars. That's
[1:49] the favorite hobby was over on the Colorado River. Oh well, Buster,
[1:53] how are things never really did get in the vision? Oh? But so
[1:59] help me, I'm going to one of these days. Is that what you
[2:01] called me about, Johnny? You remember old Mike Herby? Oh sure,
[2:07] the sweet hod Well I meant down at your boat dog guide or something.
[2:12] Oh sure, I remember him? How is he? What's what I'm calling
[2:15] about? He isn't what, Johnny? I think it was Murder Bob Bailey
[2:30] and the Exciting Adventures of the Man with the action packed Expense account America's fabulous
[2:36] free Lance Insurance investigator. That's truly Johnny Dollar. Expense account submitted by Special
[2:53] Investigator Johnny Dollar at the Tri State Life and Casually Insurance Company Home Office,
[2:58] Hartford, Connecticut. Following is the acount of expenses incurred during my investigation of
[3:02] the Kirby Will Matter. As soon as I hung up on Buster, I
[3:07] lost no time in making the necessary plane reservation in Las Vegas and picking up
[3:12] a handful of American Express Travelers checks. That's that I'm one on the expense
[3:15] account of total of three hundred and twenty dollars. Then I picked up my
[3:19] bag, was about to take off on the phone, ring again, Johnny
[3:24] Dollar. Oh Johnny, I'm brad. I caught your in Jenny Newcomb in
[3:28] price state life casually. Oh hi, Danny, Johnny, I need you
[3:30] badly and ill fast. There's only a five thousand dollar policy involved, Dan.
[3:36] I'm sorry, Dan, but I can't handle it. I'm about to
[3:38] catch a plane out of here, Johnny. List may be a killing involved
[3:42] in this case, so we don't dare to waste any time. Oh no,
[3:44] you listen. May be a killing involved in when I'm going out.
[3:46] What's more, the death of our client occurred at one of your old staffing
[3:50] Sorry, Dan, make more hobby resorts, Danny, I told you what.
[3:54] That's right, Mike Kirby. Okay, Danny, I'm on my way.
[4:13] It was seven thirty am when the plane dropped me off in Las Vegas,
[4:15] Nevada, smack in the middle of the Mohave Desert. Even at that
[4:19] hour of the morning, the otherwise clear, clean air was filled with the
[4:23] cacophany of the city of chants, the centering clicks of the ball and the
[4:28] rule that wheels, the rattle and gallop of the ivories on the dice table,
[4:30] the endless drone of the croupier, black clank of the chuckaluck cages,
[4:35] the snap of cards by the blackjack dealers, a never ending click of poker
[4:40] chips and silver dolly and over and all the interminable chunk and were the sweat
[4:45] machine day and night from one end of the town of the other smappews.
[4:49] I grant breakfast. That's Item two. Then rented a car and headed south
[4:53] and east on Route ninety three towards came in Arizona. Then just my mile
[4:58] short of that town, I swung right on sixty down toward Davis Damp down
[5:00] the Lake Mohabby Resort, mile after mile of nothing but sunbaked rock and sand,
[5:10] sage brushing, Joshua freeze, tumbleweating Texas, and right in the middle
[5:14] of it the clearer blue waters of Lake Moholly, Buster Favor, whose general
[5:18] fact totem of the resort, was waiting for me. After a hearty greeting,
[5:23] he led me into the office and we sat down and got to work.
[5:26] Yeah. It was murder all right, Johnny, Yeah sure yeah.
[5:30] And by the way, I don't know how much you knew about Mike Kirby.
[5:32] Well, only did he seem to be one of the fixtures around here.
[5:35] Was obviously well liked. He'd been a businessman back east on the spring
[5:39] of restaurants and made a fortune. Huh. About ten years ago he retired
[5:44] a lot of traveling all over the world again lucky man. Did he have
[5:47] any relatives Western, only some nephews and nieces I see. Anyhow, a
[5:53] little over three years ago he settled down here to spend the rest of his
[5:56] life just fishing, taking it easy. Can't think of a better place or
[6:00] way to return. Was he sixty one? Didn't look at him? Oh,
[6:04] if I remember right, he was pretty fitty. He was well.
[6:09] I had the impression when I was here before that he was just a hired
[6:11] fishing guy or something like that. Oh, he used that as an excuse
[6:15] to meet folks. At the time, he clean forgot to charge for his
[6:17] guide services accidentally on purpose, and all doubt said, don't rush me down.
[6:23] He I got to give you the background, Okay. Sure, He
[6:26] kept saying, over and over and over again, how glad he was to
[6:29] be out from under a lot of responsibilities. And one day, about six
[6:32] seven months ago, he suddenly transferred title to his boat, motor fishing tackle
[6:38] and his old beat up forward to us. I know, I asked him
[6:43] at the time. He wanted to get him off his personal inventory. Why
[6:46] not give him to his relatives? Well, what did he say to that
[6:49] that he didn't like him? They were just waiting around for him to die
[6:53] so they could get their hands on his money. He just wanted to make
[6:57] sure that if anything happened to him, the stuff would end up with a
[7:00] kind of we use it and appreciate it. Also, Johnny, he plunked
[7:04] down ten thousand dollars in cash and insisted that we take that too. The
[7:11] rent on his cabin for as long as he lived. Buster, Did he
[7:15] leave a will of any kind? Well, I'm getting to that anyhow.
[7:20] Last Friday afternoon he went out fishing alone like the of them did, and
[7:25] just before dark one of the rental boats came in with two young kids.
[7:30] It's, you know, Mike's boat up on the beach in that big cove
[7:32] just before the power line cross if on. Mike laying on the stand,
[7:35] decided it's still as dead and tearing in the report. It scared half out
[7:41] of their witch. Sure. Sure, I grabbed Ham brapped in a big
[7:45] flash. Right you remember Ham We had the manager of the results. Yeah,
[7:48] Well he found him there and he he was gone for over go on
[8:00] busting. Well Ham took one look at him and Rattlesnakey said, rattlesnake,
[8:05] did you tell by the way Mike looked laying there, bang marks on his
[8:09] right leg, just put the ankle, and a big bruise on his head
[8:13] like he hit a rock when he fell. But on the phone you said
[8:16] you thought it was murder, and a minute ago you said you're sure of
[8:20] him. So we put him in our boat it is on behind, and
[8:22] brought him back here. We poned Ted Harding and the King in the police
[8:26] department. I remember him, good man, Yeah, well she partying.
[8:30] Took one look and he agreeed with him. Pouis him from a rattler.
[8:33] They took him into Kingman and I telegraphed the relatives the bust now look you.
[8:37] Then I got to thinking there was something wrong. What do you mean?
[8:43] Are very few rattlers in this part of the country because the heat,
[8:46] they can't take it. If anybody's no better than the fool wanted to be
[8:48] old Mike, and they always sound a warning before they strike. Anyhow So,
[8:52] early next morning I went back to the cove and number one, there
[8:56] was no sign of any rock that Mike might have hit his one bus.
[9:01] There was no trails from any kind of a snake anywhere around. I was
[9:03] Sam could have drifted on. Oh, sir, The footprints hamm and I
[9:07] and the kids has made with clear as crystal, but no tracks of a
[9:09] snake. Right go on? Well, then I noticed it another boat had
[9:13] been beached, strange one not tomorrow landing, was right next to where Mike's
[9:16] had been, right alongside any footprints from him. What the world? We
[9:20] and the kids had mashed him all out? And I remember the way Mike
[9:22] had been laying there, so he could have been ruled out of his boat
[9:26] going out right on the sand. And it looks as though somebody met him
[9:30] out on the lake, banged him over the head, made the flang marks
[9:33] which is mind, then lashed the two boats together, dumped him off of
[9:37] the cob, and left it. Sure does, Jennie, I want to
[9:39] see that place. Yeah, and all the excitement, I might overlooked a
[9:41] lot of things. All that I doubt now, Buster, if there's no
[9:46] sign of rattlesnake poisoning all Mike Spody. Right after I called you, I
[9:48] phone Chief Huting Connor is making his autopsy today he'll call me and I look
[9:54] these nephews and nieces of Mike's How much do you know about that? I
[9:56] never met him, but according to their answering, going to stand on us
[10:01] like a swarm of locusts. There are a lot of them. Oh no,
[10:03] I was thinking of the way that they well one, there's a woman
[10:09] name of Martha Woodbury. Who excuse me, I am miss? Oh?
[10:16] We were just this is mister Johnny Dollar. How do you do, mister
[10:22] paper? I'm an easter of Michael Jonathan Kirby and probably the major beneficiary of
[10:26] his estate. I wired you that I would be here, and I am
[10:31] got here kind of fast too, didn't you. I also wired Uncle Michael's
[10:33] attorney in Kingman, that I saw no reason why I should delay the reading
[10:37] about for Michael's will. Why Gilford told me about that? And thus you
[10:41] weren't the only one. You should be here late this afternoon. I also
[10:43] wish to make funeral arrangements, be sitting in one of his financial stats.
[10:48] Won't now please tell me the circumstances of his death? And of course I
[10:54] wish to see the poor darling's body, Miss Woodbury? Yes, what do
[11:01] you do for a living. Why if it's a very concern to you,
[11:07] I teach that I'm on college toxicology. Toxicology, Yes, very interesting,
[11:16] is it fy? Who are you, mister Dallas? Well, I'm a
[11:22] special investigator for your uncle's insurance company. Yes, you see, we have
[11:26] good reason to believe your uncle was murdered, murdered, murdered. Who said
[11:31] that? Hello, Martha, you said murdered? Are you talking about uncle
[11:35] Michael? That's right? Who are you? I am Chester Kirby and as
[11:39] far as I know, the heir to my uncle Sport. Who are you,
[11:43] sir Chester? Mister Dollar is an insurance investigator? Oh, investigator A
[11:50] Dollar. I'm Hank Kirby family black Sheep. Also uncle Mike's nephews. Let's
[11:54] just talk about murder. Are are you three his only relatives? That's right,
[11:58] Dollar except for leader Leada know Lida Laverne. Sometimes try to forget that.
[12:05] All come off of that. Why my sister is a cheap nightclub dancer.
[12:11] It's the first forget it and the silly stage name she uses. Take
[12:16] it easy, teacher, of course, Martha, this is hardly the time
[12:18] or place. What do you do for a living, mister Kirby ter play
[12:24] the stock market of this that sort of thing, playboy and the gambler.
[12:28] And I suspect not a very honest one. Martha, my dear girl.
[12:31] I resent you've never done a look of honest work in your life. And
[12:35] if you think Aunt Michael didn't know it would let his money ever get into
[12:39] those soft pocket fingers of your you don't think, well, let me tell
[12:43] you both. Have you fare money grabbing and to work for a living?
[12:48] Like what, Hank, what do you do? Yes? Tell him,
[12:52] Henry, Oh, I told you I was a black sheep of the family.
[12:56] But I work, you know, odd job. I'll tell you,
[13:00] mister, he's enough about Carnival. That's disgusting the thing? Or are you
[13:07] working now? Oh, there's a sort of a scientific exhibit it show is
[13:11] more likely? All right? All right along the highway over Nerve Victor Bill
[13:16] a lot of rare animals, reptiles and things on display. And Henry,
[13:18] dear boy, when he's off the bottle, is appropriately enough in charge of
[13:22] the snake. We do scientific work too, you know, like like like
[13:31] what like milking the venom from the snakes to sell the laboratories. Yeah,
[13:37] well that is what excuse me? Oh? What you sure? Dollar?
[13:46] Time? You'll tell us what you Yeah, I want you to hear this.
[13:50] It's Keith party. Go ahead, chef as I said there was evidence
[13:56] of rental snake venom in the body, all right, but he didn't matter
[13:58] the hink marks on the lake. What do you mean? The corner says
[14:03] those marks were fakes. The venom was injected with the meat lovely of the
[14:05] arm pit for it wouldn't be noticed. Jeez, this is Johnny Dollar.
[14:09] Oh, I haven't seen you since you were here. We're working on him.
[14:13] Was the venom injected into his body before or after all? Mike received
[14:16] a blow on the head. Was the corner able to check that. I
[14:20] don't think he's trying. We'll have him do it, would you please?
[14:22] If he can sure, Also do me a favor and check with lawyer Kilford.
[14:26] I'd like to know when he's coming out here with a will. Oh.
[14:28] I saw him just a few minutes ago, and he asked me to
[14:31] tell buster some find this afternoon if he can get away. Good. Thanks,
[14:35] so I'll talk to you later. Sure, as I thought, that's
[14:41] what Verry. There is nothing that you or any of us can do until
[14:45] we get the complete report from the car. Tell us what you meant?
[14:48] And what about dear uncle Michael's will? That will have to wait for the
[14:52] attorney he expects to be here sometime later to do. Wait a minute,
[14:54] you said, murdered. Incidentally, I suppose the will shouldn't be read until
[15:00] Lolita or whatever her name is gets here. According to a telegram she ought
[15:03] to get here today. Well, she'd better. What I want you to
[15:07] do is a ring for quarters here and all of you stay here. If
[15:11] you won't do it of your own free will, I'll have Chief Hearting of
[15:15] the Kingman Police Department take whatever. No, No, this humiliation is entirely
[15:20] unnecessary. Nothing to keep me from sticking around. I want to hear that
[15:24] world too, of course, don't we all? Okay? Then sit tight?
[15:33] Well, my money. Any one of them could have done it.
[15:35] A toxicologist, a man whose business was handing poisonous reptiles, and a cheechin,
[15:41] one gambler and the night left dancer who had an appear chet. Yeah,
[15:46] any one of them, the latchet of the old man's fortune. I
[15:50] avoided telling the three present about the circumstances of their uncle's death. And the
[15:52] hope one of them would slip, would give himself away by saying something to
[15:56] show that he or she already knew as soon as they were enscounced. When
[16:00] they were rolling, Fluster and I hopped into was outboard and headed up the
[16:03] lake. Remember the last time we rode up here looking for evidence, Johnny,
[16:08] Yeah, I sure do. That was the minus touched mine. Yeah,
[16:14] the pretty little lady owned I'm ower rival with a scoch site. Just
[16:18] about here she started taking potshots that is from the shore. Wow, that's
[16:22] one thing we won't have to worry about this drift now right around this point
[16:26] where I found Mike's boat on the beach, And like I told you,
[16:30] I may have overlooked some flue that you was fought in a second us here.
[16:33] Yeah tell me and oh Mike aren't enough as a fishing guy to make
[16:37] a living? Well, I just thought enough to buy food and a few
[16:41] odds and ansins. Well, like guy told you, most of the time,
[16:45] he deliberately forgot the George not needing the money at all. Hey,
[16:49] Johnny, they're in the coat whine a boat right where Mike watt Whose is
[16:56] it? You know it's not out of all anybody. Yeah, puff of
[17:00] smoke from behind the bush, way up on the sand dune, string us
[17:03] around. That's somebody with a gun. And luck we're taking in water those
[17:07] holes in the pottom rabbit and start feeling that God can shoot pull us around.
[17:11] Plus they were like a pair of sitting ducks out here right, that
[17:32] too, of yours, truly, Johnny Dollar, in just a moment.
[17:36] Democracy It takes an awareness of life and a respect for mankind to make democracy
[17:41] work. But when this happens, democracy works in mysterious ways to better the
[17:47] lives of everyone. Why because democracy is concerned with everyone. One could say
[17:53] that democracy is people or the people rule themselves. In a democracy, no
[18:00] tyrant stands a chance, no dictator can get a foothold. The systems of
[18:03] laws and justice, and a democratic government is made and operated by the people
[18:08] for the people, and people like to be free. That's why democracy gives
[18:14] mankind it's finest legacy of freedom. Now back two of yours, truly,
[18:18] Johnny Dollar, and the Kirby will matter. Whoever has been shooting at us
[18:30] from the shore. They're unlike Mohabby had a good eye, but at thirty
[18:33] mile an hour out boarded over two hundred yards and swarming like man to be
[18:37] a pretty tough talker, a hull full of holes. He had no choice
[18:41] but to go back to the land. There. I made a quick check
[18:42] at the three I suspected of having killed old Mike Kirby. First his nephew
[18:47] Chester right here in my room, mister Dollar reading. Then a brief walk
[18:52] in the hills. Why and when is that lawyer coming to read Malcolm Michael's
[18:56] will. Then the niece Martha Woodburg planned too much, know hardly racing it
[19:02] out on the lake on to the gun. And she seems he said,
[19:06] why don't you question handy? If anyone should know how to handle a gun,
[19:10] he would all right, question Hank Kirby. That's what I don't a
[19:15] reason to just set around wait without lawyer was right. I was pationed on
[19:18] that first big cave on the right, on the Arizona side, that's right.
[19:22] And I saw you and Buster tearing back here. That's when I come
[19:26] back to see what was up? And what is up? Kirby? Yeah,
[19:30] but faith phone phone booth, next cafe, yeah, sing an operator
[19:36] just called. Yeah, you still hatt't been able to reach your party on
[19:41] whatever that call was you made. Oh, yeah, thanks, what's called,
[19:47] Hank? Uh, I've been trying to locate leaders find out why she
[19:51] hasn't got down here. Maybe she doesn't care about the world. Where is
[19:55] she? Hank is to dive up Las Vegas? So I sent the telegram
[19:57] Johnny. Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's where she's been working. Is
[20:02] that what you called earlier? Hank? Earlier? And didn't I see when
[20:06] that phone both when busting and I pulled out? Yeah? Sure, trying
[20:08] to get Leada then too, Yeah. Yeah, reminded me, Johnny,
[20:12] all you're guilty, just calling new from Kingdom and you over here in about
[20:15] an hour and the will gets read. Huh, perhaps we got to wait
[20:19] for Alda. What do you think, Hank? You you'll be well.
[20:23] Did you talk to her? Is she on her way? Yeah, she's
[20:26] on her way, all right, bus is willing. We'll use the office
[20:30] when the guilty gets so, Hank, you tell the others to be ready
[20:34] and waiting. Yeah, sure, come on, all right, Johnny that's
[20:38] on your mind? Well maybe it's just a hunch, nothing more, but
[20:41] I want to get on that phone in the office. I called herm on
[20:48] college first. Yes, Mss Michael Woodberry had left there only last night,
[20:52] so she couldn't have been here when Mike Krevy was killed. I called the
[20:56] Chester's hang out of private Gamblely Club, and Reno indicated the same thing.
[21:00] Pall number three was to the so called museum where Hank Kirby worked with the
[21:03] Snakes, a place with an easy driving distance of Lake Mohabbee. But Director
[21:08] showed he hadn't left the place in two weeks until this present trip of me
[21:11] here. Walidai, the manager at the club in Las Vegas, said she
[21:15] hadn't missed the show day times. Oho knew, but she was there every
[21:21] night. Then I suddenly remembered something about the geography of Lake Mohabbee. Yeah,
[21:26] Johnny, Cottonwood Landing is only about twenty five miles the north on the
[21:30] west from the bout this side of the lake. Could that boat we saw
[21:33] in the co sure hatch where it came from? I knew there was something
[21:37] familiar about it. Okay, what he can do, Johnny? Operator again
[21:44] the Cottonwood Landing. Please one of their rattle boats, Johnny, Yes,
[21:48] sir, I'm sure of it. Any number, any identification on them?
[21:51] Well, that I didn't see anyhow they rant so many to fishermen every day.
[21:55] Hey, here comes lawyer Guildford driving up. Then, Hello, this
[21:59] is Johnny, our special investigator. Sure, I want to know if you
[22:02] rented a boat today to a girl named Lolita Laverne. I'll meet him,
[22:07] Johnny, and I'll bring him all in here. No, sure, nobody
[22:11] for that name rent it today. Well what about Friday, Friday afternoon?
[22:15] That's right. Uh, well, the only women we read it to on
[22:21] Friday was the old lady Newberry down from Canada for a couple of days.
[22:23] Oh, this is a young girl. Well, the other was Hancock Hancock,
[22:27] Lucy Hancock. Okay, thanks very much. I've never lawyer, lawyer
[22:37] Johnny Dollar. Pleasure, mister. If you're all please sit down. I'm
[22:48] a little pressed for time, so I'll waste nothing getting into the reading of
[22:52] Michael Kirby's Well, you don't think we ought to wait for Leda to get
[22:56] here. It won't be necessary. Now I possess a full accounting of the
[23:03] net value of mister Kirby's estate. Excellent. It may surprise you, by
[23:08] the way, fie, fie, this will confirms that valuation. It is
[23:15] dated, by the way, just five months ago. Oh, let's get
[23:18] it aware of let's yeah, come on, please. His real property consisted
[23:23] only of his clothes than the outboard motor boat and an old car, which
[23:29] he transferred to the Lake Mohabi resort, together with the sum of money to
[23:32] provide for his living here. How much only ten thousand dollars? Oh?
[23:37] Oh good. Some years ago he turned all other of his real property,
[23:41] including some rather important real estate and business holdings, into cash. Oh where
[23:45] is all the cash deposited? Now? Early? You want considering adding bank
[23:49] club rate? You're rather questionable career, Henry Martha. That is quite uncalled
[23:53] for. How why don't we proceed with the will? Yeah? There is
[23:59] one asset specific? Is that aside that perhaps I should mention since it concerns
[24:03] you dollar, it's the benef issue. No, no, I refer to
[24:07] the insurance policy for five thousand dollars. But don't worry about a piddling him
[24:11] out like that. Let's have the will. Man. The insurance policy is
[24:17] to cover burial expenses and nothing else. All of it is to be used.
[24:22] Okay, okay, let's have the rest of the world. Yeah,
[24:26] very well, ye I Michael Jonathan Kirby, you make ordain and declare this
[24:37] instrument to be my last will? And oh why don't you skip that please?
[24:45] Being of soundbind and buddy determined to enjoy the roots of an industrious life
[24:49] to the fullest the bequests man life to the fullish and rather than burden others
[24:56] with the responsibility that money demand what for these and other reasons, I have
[25:03] carefully spent every dollar I ever owned. No even I'm not Michael. What
[25:23] we've made of myself? What woo and it's no less to me deserves.
[25:30] My only wish is Lucy then Lucy, Yeah, Lucy real name top of
[25:38] me. Not no Lisa leven It's Lucy. Can would say you listen,
[25:45] all of you to stay right here, stay in your own what's the point
[25:49] now we know the contents of that stupid will. Yeah. I can't just
[25:55] stand by in case these people get it cheap feet right. What little I've
[26:00] done so far in this case was based on nine but hunches so in ten.
[26:04] Then eleven PM came and Lolita, Lucy hen Cock Woodberry hadn't arrived.
[26:08] I acted on another hunch. Good Johnny, my room is right next door
[26:12] to the office. So this leader arrives and signs, and I'll let you
[26:15] know right away. Now, busted A, just sign her into a room
[26:19] after you've done a little tampering with the register. Chester is in number six,
[26:25] Is me all right? Change down on the register down number eight?
[26:30] Your rooms, right, and be sure that Leada seized the register. I
[26:33] don't understand. You don't have to, Buster, Let's just hope she gets
[26:37] here. Buster left with my dorajar. I turned off the light, a
[26:44] lamb of bed and waited. It must have been after midnight when I heard
[26:48] the car point Redbuster admits someone a room a couple of doors down the line
[26:51] and go back to his own and silence. Then the quiet clicked of feminine
[26:57] footsteps approaching might quickly in the darkness, let a cigarette all the going in
[27:03] and wait for the place. Okay, well about time, about the time
[27:15] you got, chick, turn on the light. You have us a sleep
[27:19] and won't the dark? You lost your mind? Shot bat from over the
[27:26] weeks between the peoples? What were they exactly? You should have known?
[27:33] You couldn't have picked that by away, Chick, So wait until they got
[27:37] on sure looking for me? Yeah? Did they fall for the rattle tag
[27:41] fight. We need on the old name. Well, they'll never find the
[27:45] needle I use at the bottom of the lake. And the cops question you,
[27:49] I hope you had sense enough to remind them what month and I have
[27:52] to do for a living? No chance? What about the wheel? Will
[27:56] you be surprised? Say that again? I am else. Yeah, like
[28:06] Johnny Donner, let's ask a life. That's right, special investigation. Oh
[28:10] no, yeah, all four of them had wanted to see all Mike dead.
[28:26] But Hank, the only honest working man of the lot, didn't have
[28:29] the brain. Martha wouldn't have used a means to tie in with her tonxochology
[28:33] work, and probably didn't have the nerve. So Chet, who lived by
[28:37] his wits and leda who was a real cheek no account. Well, the
[28:41] courts will take good care of them, and I still have to chuckle over
[28:44] Pearl Mice' will being of sound mind, I have spent all my money,
[28:49] which reminds me expense account total including transportation back to Harford three thirty one twenty
[28:55] five yours truly, Johnny up. Now here is our star. They'll tell
[29:11] you about next week story next week, well, next week the most complicated
[29:17] case in years comes up, but the simplest, most obvious solutions join us.
[29:22] Won't you yours truly? Johnny Downer, Yours Truly Johnny Doller, starring
[29:41] Bob Bailey, originates in Hollywood. It is produced and directed by Jack Johnstone,
[29:45] who also wrote Tonight's story. Heard in our cast were Virginia, Greg
[29:49] Barney Phillips, Shirley Mitchell, Stacey Harris, Carlton Young, Boris Lewis,
[29:53] Frank Nelson, and John Zayners. Musical supervision is by Amarrigo Marino. Be
[29:59] sure to join us next week, same time and station, or another exciting
[30:03] story of your truly Johnny Dollars. Johnny Dollar has come to use as the
[30:07] worldwide facilities of the United States Armed Forces Radio and Television Service. Welcome back.
[31:32] This is the kind of continuity that's really rare for old time radio shows,
[31:37] referencing back out of the Midas Touch Matter one of the five part episodes,
[31:44] and this is not the last appearance for the Lake Mohave Resort. And
[31:51] there was a portion here. I've got John Abbott's excellent book Who is Johnny
[31:57] Dollar Matter? Volume too, And there were some notes I think I forgot
[32:04] to check the book that week, but he had some notes here on Lake
[32:08] Mohavey Resort, and he says that Jack Johnstone related in a taped interview that
[32:15] he used to go fishing with his friend Robert Taylor at Lake Mohavey Resort and
[32:22] that his friend he had a friend named Bill Brooks who knew Jack and told
[32:27] him that Buster and him were the names of the actual operators of the resort.
[32:34] An interesting thing to have here, Not certain, there's a whole lot
[32:39] of presence president a fictionalized version of a real place. There you go,
[32:47] and as I said, we have plenty of visits left with Lake Mohavey Resort.
[32:52] It's another one of those attempts, really, and I think Johnstone somewhat
[32:57] visionary in this whole concept, particularly when it came to detective stories. I
[33:04] think, you know, for the most part, in detective stories, you
[33:07] know, as you go through the forties and fifties, backstory isn't even all
[33:12] that consistent, and the characters, you know, they have their regular cast,
[33:17] but beyond that, not really any recurring characters. And this is our
[33:22] locations outside of the normal places they go. But this is a very interesting
[33:30] feature in this particular story in this setup. All right, Well on to
[33:37] some listener comments and the feedback and Wally comments. Found your website to tune
[33:45] in Radio and ran right into the man with the action packed expense account and
[33:50] was hook. Enjoy your commentary intros and outros, especially when to my whore
[33:53] one night you explained mister Dollar's last show wasn't going away completely, it was
[34:00] morphing into a once a week format. I like the multiple segment shows much
[34:04] better. Keep up the good work. Late night radio beats up on late
[34:08] night TV big time, well, of course, because TV can't see radio
[34:14] coming. Thanks for the comment, and yeah, I definitely agree that the
[34:20] five parterers were better, but these are still pretty good and I think Bailey's
[34:24] acting holds it together. Plus all those things that Jack Johnstone did to try
[34:30] and flash Johnny Dollar out in a way that really wasn't done with most other
[34:37] Radio Detectives series. So thank you so much for the comment, Wally,
[34:43] I do appreciate it. We will be back tomorrow with Police Headquarters and then
[34:50] join us back here next Friday for yours truly, Johnny Dollar. In the
[34:54] meantime, send your comments to Box thirteen at Great Detectives dot net, follow
[35:00] us on Twitter, Radio Detectives, and become one of our friends on Facebook,
