[2:35] That's a minute. I'll give you the identification Joe Identification Bureau Captain Roberts.
[2:43] This is the pullman guy Web captain on the riverfront beat. What's up?
[2:46] A couple of fissionmen? Just a cross out of the river down with the
[2:50] lowth on wall don huh? Yeah? And see did you identify the corpse?
[2:54] No? Yes, the man American about twenty five of where's the corpse?
[3:00] Now? Laying on the bank beside the whar I got the fishermen in
[3:04] garden until I get back. Okay, Web, hop back and stay there.
[3:07] I'll be down in about five minutes. If anyone comes nosing around,
[3:09] hold them. Also got a short call card to pick me up in front
[3:19] to get the Williams and Murphy. We're making an investigation down on the river.
[3:38] Where's it? Web? This way, sir, you better use your
[3:39] light. Captain, there's black as pitch down. There aren't there any street
[3:44] lights around here, no, sir, when you pass three blocks back,
[3:46] was the last one? In spite of the river isn't used very much where
[3:50] there's wark. You spoke up a low sun one. Yeah, over there,
[3:53] it's not used anymore except by a few Chinese fishermen. You say,
[3:57] fishermen found the body, Yes, sir, I got their names. Now
[4:00] this is and let him go where they find it under the wharf, sir.
[4:02] Was weighted down with iron. Must have been pitched off the wharf.
[4:06] That's what I figured, sir. Here's the body captain under hand here,
[4:12] Williams, and we'll drag it out of the water a little farther. Yes,
[4:15] sir, he that water looks black shit. Yeah, splash light on
[4:20] the web, young fellow, wasn't he. Yeah, I've never seen him
[4:24] before. No, sir, don't see what he has in his pockets and
[4:27] nothing's there. I went through them while I was waiting for you, man.
[4:30] I found this scrap of paper. That's all. That's it. How'd
[4:32] you light over here, Williams? Right, it's like a piece of paper
[4:36] sack. Yeah, This writing on a two captain a Chinese name sun yet.
[4:42] Key, Have you heard the sun yet? Key? Yeah, he's
[4:46] supposed to be a big shot down here in Chinatown. Never saw him,
[4:48] though. This guy's got a bump on his head, and that's pretty plain.
[4:54] What happened? You're meet it with murder? Sir? We got a
[4:56] dead man here. What does it look like, post office, Captain?
[5:00] He's a black silk or do you find it in his hand? Looks like
[5:02] it was torn off the struggle. Well, a couple of you boys stay
[5:06] until the wagon gets here. We will try to identify this guy down at
[5:09] headquarters. You come with me, Webbon right out your report, Yes,
[5:13] sir, identification gar a Captain Roberts, Oh, hello, Commissioner. No,
[5:36] sir, we haven't identified him yet. It's like it'll be another one
[5:40] of those Chinatown mysteries. Yes, sir, I will come in, Robert.
[5:48] Yeah, I'm Ferguson, No Perguson, Government of Narcotic Detailed. Oh
[5:53] yes, thanks you tell Us did some work for us a while back on
[5:56] the Dope Raide. The Chief sent me over to enlist your help again.
[6:00] Sure, what's up? Another raid now? This time missing man? Who
[6:02] is he? Tommy wood Race on the cover man he's been missing two days.
[6:06] Now. Where'd you last see him? China Town? He went into
[6:10] a restaurant down on Trent Street near the river. As far as we know,
[6:12] he never came out. Did you search the place? Yes? Who
[6:15] langs in? The Chinaman who runs it says Woods never came in at all.
[6:18] What did this Woods look like? Oh? He was a young fellow,
[6:21] about thirty, weighed about one hundred and thirty pounds, blonde hair,
[6:26] gold front two. Yes. Have you seen him not less than five minutes
[6:29] ago. We've been trying to identify him for the last twenty four hours.
[6:31] You mean he's dead. Somebody hit him over the head and toss him into
[6:34] the river at the foot of Trent Street. Are you sure he's in the
[6:38] mortgage? You care to look him over? Wait a minute, how was
[6:41] this man dressed? Cheap linen suit, yellow shoes, red tie. That
[6:45] was Tommy all right. Here's something we found in his pocket, scrap of
[6:47] paper the name of Sun yet key on it. In his hand. We
[6:53] also found this piece of black silk with a golden broidery. It's like a
[6:56] part of a Chinese robe. In his watch pocket, we found a few
[6:59] grains of all colored up right. That's interesting. Yeah, Captain Roberts,
[7:04] Tommy Woods was killed by an opium gang we've been trying to round up for
[7:08] the last six months. He's the second man we've lost. He got any
[7:11] evidence in the gang, nothing direct. We've been told that this son yet
[7:14] Key is the head of it. We also have reason to believed that the
[7:16] opium is dispensed from the rear of Fu Lang Sinned restaurant. Why didn't you
[7:20] send a crude erector place? Haven't enough evidence? This sonyat Key is a
[7:25] very clever man. Important stuff direct from Persia. I thought all opium games
[7:29] from China a fallacy. Captain. Persian opium of good quality contains from ten
[7:34] to fifteen percent of morphine, and Chandhu made from Persian opium would contained to
[7:39] have twenty five percent. That's why sonyat KEI deals exclusively in Persian opium.
[7:44] We can break him, We break the ring. Why did you get him
[7:46] then? No evidence? Our men can't get near him, some doubt if
[7:49] he even exists. How about one of our boys, no better? They
[7:54] seem to be able to spot a colp a mile off. Hey, I
[7:57] got it. How about a woman we thought of that too, but the
[8:00] chief vetoed it too dangerous. I know someone who'll give her a right arm
[8:03] to bust at dope ring who our police matron carry. Welch. She lost
[8:07] a younger brother down there on the river front about a year ago. A
[8:11] narcotic praise chinaman shot him. Do you think she'd take the risk? Sure,
[8:15] she'd love it. All right, Robert, we'll see that. Carry
[8:18] Welsh gets the chime, follow him, all right, missus. Welch,
[8:39] there's a restaurant, got ahead. You enter the same door, walk to
[8:41] the back. You'll steal to the door with Chinese blasters on us. Go
[8:45] through that door and ask for sun yet keys. Understand everything as well.
[8:48] Yes, yeah, here's a ten dollars business mark bun now as you can
[8:54] make a buy of opium, walk out the same door you came in,
[8:58] Roberts, and I will rush back recover the money. Your job is to
[9:01] get away with the dope, I understand. Now. If you get into
[9:03] trouble, call for us. We'll be sitting in the back of the rest
[9:05] offeating. But of course don't recognize us when you come in. Yes,
[9:09] sir, all right, give us about five minutes to get inside. This
[9:16] Foo length Sin who runs the place is a crafty fellow. I'll never get
[9:20] the idea he's not smart. He speaks English better than you or I.
[9:24] I've heard him also graduated from one of our colleges. Yes, here we
[9:28] are. I'll talk to him. That's a warning gong. It sounds whenever
[9:33] police enter the place. Becomes foo lengthin. Well, hello, foo lengths
[9:37] in. It is with much pleasure that this lowly person again has the honor
[9:41] of being visited by the police. Wise guy, aren't you, God say,
[9:46] in a realm of fools, it is easy to be wise. They're
[9:48] not interested in what you're he then, God say, you don't like it
[9:52] very much when we drop in on you that way, do you? It
[9:54] is written, my dear Lukeenant, that he that excited anger is a fool.
[9:58] He's with tortoise with anger is still a greater one. It should also
[10:03] be written to langs in it is unwise to arouse the anger of the police.
[10:07] This is Captain Roberts from headquarters. I am deeply honored by your presence,
[10:11] Captain. What may this lowly servant do for you? No, we're
[10:15] just down looking around full lengths in it is written that fate has no pity
[10:20] for them who take needless risks? What do you mean by that? Nothing,
[10:22] my dear captain. Nothing, Captain, and I came down for dinner.
[10:26] I am honored the cable for the occasion. Yes, in the back,
[10:31] where we can keep an eye on you, it shall be as you
[10:33] wish. I count the boilis You have them well trained, haven't you?
[10:39] Hey? What are all these fancy grains of rice? Merely a custom of
[10:43] my ancestors? Ceremonial rice, ceremonial rise. Eh. Yes, each grain
[10:48] is carefully polished and painted by hand, and placed in one's robe until the
[10:52] day of its tonement. Quite a job to paint all those grains by hand,
[10:56] isn't it. It is written that the work of the idol is here.
[11:01] Your table is ready, Lieutenant, Oh thank you. Come on,
[11:03] Captain, I need the word of them. You better get back to our
[11:05] table in a hurry. This is wealth, will be coming in to make
[11:07] the buye here, this is it. I'll slip face in the front.
[11:13] Hey, where did I see those rice grains before? In Tommy Wood's pocket?
[11:18] Dash it say? And this is Welsh. Look at your menu.
[11:20] Robert hmm. She walked right through without looking right or left. Roberts for
[11:26] the first time, that warning gong didn't sound good. Maybe you should be
[11:31] able to swing it. She makes a buye. We'll take in everybody in
[11:35] this joint. I've men outside to surround the place. It's the first sign
[11:37] of trouble. Good lord Gong. Who was that woman's screens? Come on,
[11:41] carry Welch is in trouble. Through the door right here. The door's
[11:46] knocked. Take your turn, break it in. It's open. Come on,
[11:52] black pitching here, better be careful. Wait a minute, what's time?
[11:54] Carry welch. She's hurt. Yeah, give me a hand and knocked
[11:58] out? Look out? What is that a knife? It just missed you?
[12:01] By name Fi behind those curtains. There he is in the back room.
[12:03] Sonya, yeah, yeady, and he's coming for you. Yeah,
[12:05] he's still moving. Give it to him again. Yeah, the gud won't
[12:07] stop him's still moving. It's no use. You might as well be shooting
[12:11] blanks. Now here's an act there. Take that to yell well, I'll
[12:16] be wax. It's a wax figure on the track. I wonder we couldn't
[12:22] find Sanya Kee. He was a wax figure. It's hollow inside. I
[12:28] got it. Whoever is passing up this door is using this figure so he
[12:31] wouldn't be recognized. He spoke to the peddler and passed out the dope through
[12:33] this wax figure up front. And here's a tin of opium. Well,
[12:37] what do you know about that? Here's something else. Look, Captain,
[12:41] well, I'll be all right for lengthin put him up about it. Yeah,
[12:56] there has been trouble. It is what I think is that one full
[13:01] length stained restaurant has been caught selling opium under the name of sun yet Ki
[13:05] and has been caught. It has written that obstinacy is the firmness of un
[13:09] reason. Oh yes, you had a pretty color gamed Joe. You use
[13:13] that white figure so nobody could see your face. You even had it fixed
[13:16] so it would move. You didn't pool us. One does not have to
[13:20] fool I've listened to another your Chinese flats. Look here, this is what
[13:26] caught you and linked you with the murder of Tommy Woods. Right, ceremonial
[13:31] rice. One of Captain Robert's bullets cut through your row. You spilled a
[13:33] trail of colored rice from the back room around the corner and back in here.
[13:37] I'm sorry for linthin, but we've got you dead to right. It
[13:43] is said that fate writes with an invisible hand, said quarters right, Hello,
[14:05] Tim, send a wrecking crew down to Fu Lang Sin's Chinese restaurant on
[14:07] Trent Street. Captain roberts will meet him there, please, Headquarters. That's
[14:16] a minute, sure, jefs. Solvas, give me Steeve Robertson quick,
[14:24] Yes, sir, for you, Chief Steve Robertson. This is Sheriff Priyan,

[16:00] way's the harmon Field Fire Department. The whole town is sa I mean,
[16:29] Oh, here's the lasst reporting on the arm felt quite. Chief. Order
[16:32] has been restored and here's a complete list of dead and injured there but one
[16:34] to day. Hell, the worst is all over now, Chief, not
[16:38] to think you better get some sleep. Sleep. Oh, I'm good for
[16:42] the rest of the day, all right. Chief, that you've been up
[16:45] two days and nights now, sir, Yes, I'm must logan to see
[16:51] you teef. All right. Sent them in and I don't worry about me.
[16:53] Peter's not great with a terrible thing, but it looks like we have
[16:56] a situation well under control. Come in. Yes, I'm Spender Logan investigator
[17:04] for the major insurance company Logan Captain Peter. Thank you. How do you
[17:08] do, Peter? I'm glad to know you. Our company is making adjustments
[17:11] from paying policy just as rapidly as possible in the Hammonsville quake. Good that
[17:15] from speed relief work. We realize that, however, in hurrying to pay
[17:19] all claims, it's necessary to increase our vigilance you mean against fraudulent claims.
[17:25] Yes, any major disasters such as this always has its share. My company
[17:29] wants to pay all legitimate claims as soon as it can, but it's my
[17:32] job to see that there are no frauds. It's too large a job for
[17:36] one man, so I'm appealing to you for one or two men from your
[17:40] office to speed things up. Otherwise claimants will be forced to wait their turn.
[17:44] Well that's what you want from my man. Well, they will be
[17:47] asked to assist only in cases where our investigators can't handle the situation. Take
[17:52] this case, for instance. Pull up a chair Peter, Yes, sir,
[17:56] Now here's a typical case. The case of Ward Williams. Williams and
[18:00] his brother on the small shop on White Street, right in the center of
[18:03] the earthquake district. The shop, not insured, is in ruins. However,
[18:07] William's brother, Hugh Williams, is heavily insured with our company, you
[18:11] mean life insurance. Yes, late, yesterday rescuers pulled the body from under
[18:17] the ruins. This Ward Williams claims that it's the body of his brother.
[18:21] He identified it in one of the temporary mores. He also produced a fifty
[18:26] thousand dollar policy and demanded the immediate payment. That's not strange, No,
[18:30] that part of it isn't. However, I was present when Williams identified the
[18:36] body but the clothes and coos. He appeared greatly grieved, but another merchant
[18:40] asked him if he was sure that the body was out of his brother.
[18:42] Williams was shaken and answered in a menacing tone, Sure it is, and
[18:48] nobody better say it isn't. Now. It's been my experience that anyone who
[18:52] has the least possible reason to believe a relative alive will grasp at the hope
[18:57] of any suggestion to that effect. Yes, that's right. Not only that,
[19:02] but I took the other merchant aside and asked him why. He suggested
[19:06] that the body might not beat you Williams. And he told me that as
[19:08] he the merchant ran from his store, he thought he saw you Williams and
[19:11] his brother run into the street. Oh, were there any other employees in
[19:15] the shop at the time of the quake? No, but we have only
[19:17] Williams work for that. What are you proposed to do well in this particular
[19:21] case, I propose to enlist your aid in finding you Williams, whom I
[19:25] believe to be still alive. You mean you believe him to be in a
[19:27] proper his brother to collect the insurance. Yes, in which case finding him
[19:32] will prove very difficult if he would naturally go into hiding until after the claim
[19:36] had been paid. Well, if our cooperational speed relief, I'll be glad
[19:41] to sign a few men to him. Well, thank you. Just as
[19:42] a star a chief, I'd like to take a crack at this Williams case.
[19:47] All right, Peters, if you have any ideas, and I'm sure
[19:48] that mister Logan would be grateful for your assistant. Indeed, I will all
[19:52] right, Just give me this William's address and I'll soon have a report for
[19:55] you. Yes, sir, I got some ideas of my own on this
[19:59] thing. Yes, mister Williams. Oh, yes, you're mister Ward Williams.
[20:29] Yes, I am Captain Peter at Central Police Station. Little matter I
[20:33] would like to talk to you about, certainly, Captain, come in,
[20:37] get down here, Captain. Oh, thanks, I can't stay long,
[20:41] mister Williams. One of our patrolmen picked up a man about forty five who
[20:44] had been struck by a hit and run driver. And this man regained consciousness.
[20:48] We asked his name, and he claims he is Hugh Williams. That
[20:51] doesn't know where he lives. Hugh. The doctor says he's suffering from amnesia,
[20:55] loss of memory. And I thought he might be your brother, my
[20:57] brother, Hughes. Did. I saw him with my own eyes as they
[21:00] pulled his body from the wreckage of my store. You're positive in your identification,
[21:04] I am well. I guess that's that. This fellow's name may be
[21:08] Hugh Williams, but he's probably not the person this adjuster thinks he is.
[21:14] Adjuster. Yeah, a fellow named logan investigator for the major insurance company.
[21:18] You see. His idea is that during the confusion of the quake, your
[21:21] brother ran from the building before it fell and was making his way to the
[21:23] city when he was struck by an automobile. I'm sorry, Captain Peters,
[21:26] but my brother was buried yesterday. This other is a case of mistaken identity.
[21:32] Yeah, that's what I fakured, mister Williams. A fellow oft to
[21:33] know his own brother. But the insurance company isn't taking any chances during a
[21:37] time like this. The investigator is going to have a talk with this fella
[21:41] tomorrow morning. Poor guy won't last long, and the adjuster figures he'll talk
[21:45] before he dies. You say he's in the hospital, yeah, rich one,
[21:49] I don't know. I saw the name in the paper, but I'm
[21:52] not sure. Why are you interested in? Oh no, no, well,
[21:59] I'm sorry I bothered you, mister Williams. That's all right, Oh
[22:02] so long. I'm sorry about your brother. Thanks. Well, how'd you
[22:12] take it? It's like I thought he would logan. He was startled when
[22:15] I sprung it on him, and he sort of calmed down. Just before
[22:18] I left. He tried to ask, unconcerned, like where this man was
[22:22] Oh, he's interested. All right, You hit it Peters, making him
[22:25] think that his brother was struck by hit and run driver. There is one
[22:26] way of finding out just how sure he is that the man found in the
[22:30] ruins was his brother. Yeah, and I figured that if Ward Williams knows
[22:33] his brother is alive, he'll try to see him and shut him up.
[22:36] Right, you say? He asked which hospital man was in? Yeah,
[22:38] and I told him I didn't remember, but I saw it in a newspaper.
[22:41] He'll watch every paper that comes out. Come on, where are you
[22:45] doing now? I give the next edition of the Sun a very interesting little
[22:48] article. You get the paper, Yeah, it's the home edition, the
[23:08] one Williams will most likely read. Oh good, let's see it. It's
[23:14] on page one that so who gave it to them? Oh? Man near
[23:18] death insists he is not dead. There's a headline for you. An unidentified
[23:22] man about forty five lies dying in Providence hospital, insisting that his name is
[23:27] Hugh Williams. Police find that a Hugh Williams is alleged to have died in
[23:32] the recent Harmonsville earthquake and believe that the man is stuffering from metal attacks as
[23:37] the result of being struck by hit and run drivers sometime last night. That'll
[23:41] pull Williams out of anything. Well, yes, Providence Hospital, a chiefs
[23:47] office, Captain Peters, Oh, hell, Burt, what's that? When?
[23:53] All right? Be it over to the hospital and get into bed as
[23:56] we planned. There you are, you've got him worried already. The man
[24:00] I left to watch william says that he bought every edition of the afternoon papers
[24:03] and took them home. After about thirty minutes, he came out with a
[24:04] copy of the Sun in his pocket and started for the city in his car.
[24:07] Good. I told Burke to beat it to the hospital and get into
[24:10] bed. As we plan, we'll arrange to meet our friend mister Williams at
[24:12] the hospital and ask him why all the interests if he's so sure his brother
[24:15] is dead? Everything all, said Burke. Yeah, we'll get in the
[24:33] bed and pull the covers up around Geneck. That's did got the nurse instructed.
[24:38] Yes, when Williams asked to see the man, she needs to give
[24:41] him the room key and let him come alone. Good work. He better
[24:45] pull down that shade and turn off the light. We'll hide behind the screen.
[24:48] Williams should be here any minute, right, good, there's just enough
[24:53] light in the room to see the bed, y'all said Burke. This is
[24:56] a shine all right, Get over here with me, Logan. I figure
[25:00] we won't have to long to wait. Hey, I'm getting somebody's at the
[25:08] door. He's drying the knob. All right, we get the npon Logan
[25:25] right, say say what now, you know? Get his hand, Logan,
[25:27] his right hand. There's something in it. Give me that. Well,
[25:30] I'll be what is it? Cyanide? He was alway at the bump
[25:33] his brother off. Why are you crazy, fool? I never thought you'd
[25:36] go as far as murdered? Why not? The paper said he was going
[25:38] to die anyway. He's ran it on me. He ruined my chances of
[25:41] getting that fifty thousand. Now, you and your brother had this whole frame,
[25:44] didn't you. He was to disappear and you were to collect the insurance?
[25:47] Is that right here? Now? Who was the man whose body was
[25:48] found in the wreckage? A trip who'd come in looking for a hand of
[25:52] just just quick started and you tried to fool us with the wrong corpse.
[25:55] Huh, I guess we got back on you. Hey, wake up,
[25:57] Burke, brother, which a funny Yeah, you were checking us and we
[26:04] were checking you. Taking down Bark Welcome back. Well, a few parts
[26:26] in there particting Episode nine kind of uncomfortable to twenty first century years and in
[26:33] some ways a lot harsher racially than we would see in the post war era,
[26:40] which tended to scale things back a bit. The character, of course,
[26:44] was way overplayed with the use of proverbs and such the way that guy
[26:48] was going, and even Charlie Chan would have said he was overdoing it.
[26:52] Also, the police seemed kind of I ended bringing a wrecking crew to a
[26:56] place where they've just arrested someone but alone and I haven't obtained a conviction.
[27:03] Episode ten was an interesting scheme. I did find myself questioning why our criminal
[27:10] didn't go to where his brother was supposed to be at and see if he
[27:14] was still there. Going to the hospital would be silly, particularly if it
[27:18] turned out to be another Williams, which with that last name is definitely a
[27:22] possibility. Plus it was assuming a lot to assume that his brother would give
[27:27] him away, and if his brother did truly die, then he would get
[27:32] the insurance legitimately and just say he made a mistake in identification, but I
[27:37] guess a guilty conscience and all of that. Another thing I liked about that
[27:41] second episode was that the name of the major insurance company was a major insurance
[27:48] company. I just found that hilarious. I wonder if they bank with very
[27:53] large bank and if they would in the future contract their out there insurance investigations
[28:00] to very competent insurance investigators. And we also got a peek at what insurance
[28:07] companies did before they could call on yours truly, Johnny Dollar. All right,
