[0:28] Welcome to the Great Detectors of Old Time Radio from Boise, Idaho. This

[0:55] we have a other podcast out there with old time radio, including The Old
[0:59] Time Arm Radio Superman Show, a Lacernsword dot com, as well as The
[1:03] War The War dot Great Detectives dot net. Well, it's been two weeks
[1:10] and we're going to go ahead and wrap up the Phantom Chase matter. So
[1:14] here is part eight in part nine from Hollywood, It's time now for Johnny
[1:23] Dollar Boy genius. Oh look, Johnny, don't blame yourself. We come
[1:26] here to Lagos Island to pick up Tom Chase. So what happens? He
[1:30] circles around behind us, grabs a boat and takes off. How could you
[1:34] help it? I should have figured what he was up to. He was
[1:36] all alone here on the island, no way to get off, so we
[1:38] obligingly show up in a boat. He pins us down on the end of
[1:41] brush with a few wild shots while he works his way around to the boat.
[1:45] Well, one thing I got to admit, Lola, your husband's no
[1:47] dummy. Please, Johnny, I just soon not be reminded of Tom's cleverness,
[1:53] bezzlement, murder, escape. If that's cleverness, I don't want any
[1:56] part of it. I hope you're going to turn himself in. That chance
[2:00] of that, maybe if he goes back to Barbados, we can find in
[2:02] there overlooking one small detail alone. You and I are now in the same
[2:07] spot, Tom Chase. Wise, we're alone on this island, and there's
[2:09] no way off. Tonight and every weekday night. Bob Bailey in the transcribed
[2:21] Adventures of the Man with the Action Packed Expense Account, America's Fabulous freelance insurance
[2:25] Investigator Ours Truly Johnny Dollar. From Special Investigator Johnny Dollar, location, Largos
[2:45] Island, three hours by boat from Barbados and the British West Indies to the
[2:49] Home Office Universal Adjustment Bureau, Hertford, Connecticut assignment the Phantom Chase matter expense
[2:53] account continued. I was getting nowhere. I've been on the trail of Tom
[3:04] Chase ever since he'dn' bazzle one hundred and twenty thousand dollars from his New York
[3:07] investment firm and jump Baale first to New Orleans. There, a man named
[3:10] Freddy Quintenna had offered to deliver Chase for a price, but Quintana had wound
[3:15] up dead in an alley. Obviously, Tom Chase didn't want to be delivered.
[3:21] I'd finally tracked him to Barbados and found a fisherman who told me he'd
[3:23] brought Chase here to Lagos Island. Chase's wife, Lola had flown to Barbados
[3:28] and insisted on coming with me to the island, hoping she could convince her
[3:30] husband to turn himself in. But instead, Chase had maneuvered us away from
[3:35] the boat I'd rented and had taken off in it. And now Lola and
[3:38] I were out in the middle of nowhere, but really nowhere. What are
[3:43] we going to do? Johnny, you know that's a good question. Moller,
[3:46] police inspector Whitsid back at Barbados told me that nobody comes near Lagos Island
[3:51] anymore, not even fishermen. We may be here quite a while. We
[3:55] don't even have any food. Well, let'd abandoned house across the island my
[4:00] husband was hiding. Could be this food in it that he brought? Would
[4:03] you do me a favor, Johnny? What is it? I just assume
[4:08] you didn't keep calling Tom my husband. Yes? Isn't he legally Yes?
[4:13] When I found out he wasn't traveling alone, that it was a woman who
[4:16] arranged his hiding place in New Orleans, I guess I just quit thinking of
[4:20] him as my husband. Oh, how do you think of him now?
[4:24] Is a confused animal on the run. He doesn't seem very confused to me.
[4:29] One thing I don't get, though, what's that? Well that night
[4:31] in Barbados before you arrived, when Chase slug me over the head in that
[4:34] waterfront warehouse, why didn't he finish me off? Then he had a chance
[4:39] to take me off his trail for keeps. And today here on the island,
[4:42] those shots of his were plenty. While Johnny, I keep telling you
[4:45] Tom is no killer. I know he's an embezzler running away from the law,
[4:48] But I can't believe he killed that man. Couldn't Tanna, New Orleans.
[4:51] I can't believe, or won't believe. I won't believe I guess,
[4:57] yeah, and I'm going to build a fire here on the beach. It's
[5:01] just possible about my pass near enough to the island to see it. It's
[5:05] funny the way things work out. Oh, timing is always so bad.
[5:11] What do you mean, Oh, you and me here under other circumstances.
[5:16] I don't really think i'd mind being here with you at all, Johnny.
[5:21] I uh, I think i'd better start building that fire. We collected a
[5:30] pile of driftwood and brush and touched a match to it. Then we went
[5:34] across the island to the house where Chase had been hiding out. It was
[5:38] a pretty wickedy affair, but he left some food after we didn't, and
[5:42] we went back and built the fire higher. Then we waited. I was
[5:46] dragged by and I was sure Chase was getting farther and farther from me all
[5:49] the time, but there was nothing I could do about it. Finally,
[5:56] I guess I dozed, doctor, Johnny, What what is what? Look
[6:03] coming around the point out there? A boat. Come on, let's get
[6:09] out where they can see. What's the matter. That could be the fisherman
[6:12] who brought Chase here. If he's working with Chase, maybe he's coming here
[6:15] to try and finish us off. Johnny, do you hey, wait,
[6:17] that's a police boat. Yeah, it's inspecta whitson, Thank heaven, Come
[6:21] on hi, Inspector, yes, Inspector yes, yeah. Aside from getting
[6:34] shot at a couple of times, A bit of a girl, eh,
[6:38] pretty one side ago, Oh, inspect you of the most beautiful sight we've
[6:43] seen all day? Oh well, thanks man. And I couldn't raise your
[6:46] bar radio and decided to come and have a look. See where's trace?
[6:48] Who knows? He pinned us down on the underbrush with a few shots while
[6:51] he circled around behind us and took off on the boat. I see,
[6:56] I wonder why? About halfway here, I saw a boat in the distance,
[6:59] was two away for me to see who was in it? Which way
[7:00] was it? Heading back towards Barbados? And let's get this boat cranked up,
[7:03] Inspector. Maybe we've got a chance after all. I imagine Barbados looks
[7:15] pretty good again, do you too, It certainly does, Inspector. Yeah.
[7:18] And you came along and looked like we were going to turn out to
[7:21] be Longos Islands alders citizens. Oh yeah. Incidentally, mister dollar, do
[7:28] you know a trap named George Jefferson. Yeah. Sure. He's the senior
[7:30] partner of the firm chasing bezel of money from in New York. He's an
[7:33] old friend. Inspector Why. Well, he dropped in on me just before
[7:38] I shoved off. Huh, said he'd wait for you at George Hotel,
[7:41] George here and Barbados. Well, I found him earlier and he said he
[7:43] was going to catch the first plane he caught and come down here. Why
[7:46] mainly to take you back to New York. Now, Johnny, we've been
[7:49] all over there, yes, and I still think you ought to. Hey,
[7:53] hold it, what's the matter That boat on the other side of the
[7:56] pier tied up there? It's the boat we went to the island in.
[7:59] Yeah. Sure, so Chase did come back to Barbados. Good. I'll
[8:03] have the airlines and steamships watched, and I'll get word to the fishing and
[8:07] charter. But Chase is there. I think we can keep him bottled up,
[8:15] Inspector Whitz. That took off to cover all the bases, and I
[8:18] took Lola back to her hotel. When I got to mind, George Everson
[8:20] was waiting for me. I took him to my room. Any luck on
[8:26] Lagos Island, mister Dollar, Oh yeah, Oliver Bead, you were sure
[8:31] it's really Chase. You've been trailing all the way. Freddy Quintana, New
[8:35] Orleans stole a letter from him, one that he'd started to Lola. It
[8:37] matched the sample of Chase's writing. You gave me New York. And when
[8:41] he grabbed our boat on Lagos Island, Lola got a look at him and
[8:43] recognized him. How's Lola holding up on her all this? Oh? I
[8:48] don't know. She says she's all over being hurt that once she found out
[8:52] there was another woman involved, that killed her feeling for Chase. I'm not
[8:54] so sure that, mister Dollar, neither mine. Lola was completely devoted to
[8:58] Tom. She was bad hurt by his embezzlement, and I think she's still
[9:01] being hurt. Well, in any case, i'd feel a lot better if
[9:03] she'd clear out. Well, as you know, I came down here to
[9:07] take her back, but on the way I started thinking about it. Oh,
[9:11] as long as she is here, perhaps she could be a big help
[9:13] to us. Well. I still think Tom Chase would listen to Lola,
[9:16] even if he wouldn't listen to anyone else. Nobody could change that much.
[9:20] I wouldn't count on that, mister Everson. Yeah, still is worth a
[9:24] try. If it could only work out so that Lola could talk to Tom,
[9:28] or better yet, if Lola and I both could talk to him,
[9:30] or what would you say to him? I don't know what Lola would say,
[9:33] but for me, I'd put it to him that his only hope of
[9:35] straightening himself out is to turn himself in and turn over whatever the embezzled money
[9:39] is left all. Look, I'd even go so far as to guarantee the
[9:41] eventual restitution to our investors of whatever amount he's already spent. I know,
[9:46] to take time. Well that's pretty generous of you, mister Everson, but
[9:50] I'm afraid you're a little too late. Why in the first place, Tom
[9:54] Chase obviously is not going to turn himself in. He's had plenty of chances
[9:56] to up to now, and he hasn't exactly jumped at them. But if
[9:58] I I think it's well, I think he's got a good reason for not
[10:01] turning himself in. It's better than an even chance. He's the one who
[10:05] knocked off Freddy Contana, New Orleans, the man who offered to turn Tom
[10:07] over to you for a price. That's the one. Oh no, mister
[10:11] Everson. At this point, it looks like there's only one way for me
[10:13] to get Tom Chase, and that's to track him down and drag him in
[10:22] expense account out of twenty seven a dollar twenty American cab fare from my hotel
[10:26] to Colonial Police headquarters. Check with Inspector Whitstt, who, fortunately for me,
[10:30] he was being most cooperative. Chase hasn't contacted any of the airlines or
[10:33] steamship lines. We're in touch with the charter and fishing boats. He hasn't
[10:37] approached any of them so far as we know. In other words, the
[10:39] chances are good that he's still here in Barbado. That's the right question,
[10:43] is where right? Again, take a look at this map and you will
[10:48] see our problem. One hundred and seven to square miles more or less.
[10:52] Yeah, he could be here in the city around the stick, somewhere over
[10:56] here in the mirsl beach out Yet I somehow dot that. Well, it's
[11:01] pretty fashionable spot, and I imagine Chase that try to be as inconspicuous as
[11:05] possible. Yeah, so he's probably hiding out in the city here, well,
[11:09] there are scores of hotels and rooming. Hid it, I don't have
[11:11] enough men to no, excuse me? What's that here? Yes? Oh,
[11:18] what's the address? Thanks her boy? Yeah, things are looking up,
[11:24] mister dolla, there's a man answering Chase's general description. Just checked in
[11:28] at a hotel out in the north part of the city. It's the room
[11:39] at the end of the hall, mister donna. Okay, let's not be
[11:41] polite inspecting. Let's use the pass key the clerk gave us and bargeering in
[11:46] right. Ah. Empty. How about that closet nothing, windows open,
[11:58] and there's a fire escape. Yeah, if you lived in the is he
[12:01] there? There's clothes on the chair. Yeah. That jacket it looks like
[12:03] the one he was wearing when he swiped my boat on Longest Island. Did
[12:05] he We just miss him, inspector. I've been just missing him for the
[12:09] last ten days, and believe me, I'm getting tired of it. Probably
[12:11] only by a few minutes too, Sure, just a few minutes, but
[12:15] it might as well be a year. I went back to my hotel,
[12:22] I was beat Being always one jump behind Tom Chase was getting on my nerves.
[12:28] Sure, he was still in Barbados, but where that the rate I
[12:31] was going catching him was turning into a full time career, A career was
[12:35] getting fed up with. Then as I ended my room, I had a
[12:39] slight movement behind him. I realized all of a sudden that I wasn't alone.
[12:43] Don't turn around on why hold it very still? Okay, Look,
[12:48] I can save you some time. It's my gun you're looking for. It's
[12:52] in the should to host a lot side. You know, I just had
[12:58] a real wild idea. I said to turn around, keep your hands in
[13:00] sight. Okay. My wild idea is that you're a Tom Chase. Yeah.
[13:09] If I ask you a couple of questions, why not? Why did
[13:13] you do it the embezzlement? Was it because of a woman? It was?
[13:22] It turned sour? It doesn't matter anymore. And where's the money?
[13:26] That doesn't matter either. You won't get it. I see next question?
[13:33] Why did you come here to my rum, Chase. I've tried every trick
[13:37] I know to shake you dollar. None of them's worked. You've kept on
[13:41] coming. I can't stand it anymore. I'm sick of running. Give yourself
[13:46] up, Chase. It's too late for that. No, there's another way.
[13:52] I've got to take you off my trail once and for all. I
[13:54] love, sorry, but that's the way it has to be. Dyla.
[13:58] This is the end of the line for you, Johnny Dollar. It's Lola
[14:20] Chase. Johnny, hang up Dollar, Johnny are you there? Yeah?
[14:24] Yeah, I'm here. But right now I can think of a lot of
[14:26] places i'd rather be, said, Johnny, there's someone there with you.
[14:31] Tom. It is Tom, isn't it. I'm coming over. No,
[14:33] don't do it. I'm coming out away, Lola. He has a gun
[14:37] and he means business. From Special Investigator Johnny Dollar, location Barbados, British
[14:48] West Indies to the Home Office Universal Adjustment Bureau, Hertford, Connecticut. Assignment
[14:54] the Phantom Chase matter expense account continued Item twenty eight. Well a long about
[15:05] then. I figured this item would be around two hundred bucks burial expenses for
[15:09] me. Tom Chase was desperate, tired of running, and ready to take
[15:11] me off his trail for keeps. But Lola Chase's phone called me seemed to
[15:16] have a strange effect on him. That was my wife was yeah, that
[15:20] was all. Why'd you drag her into this? Dollar? I didn't Chase.
[15:22] She insisted on coming here to Barbados herself. Why couldn't she stay out
[15:26] of it? I suppose because she's your wife. That's all over. Yeah,
[15:31] I figured that when I found out it was a woman who arranged your
[15:35] height out of New Orleans. That's all over too. Turn sour, real
[15:41] sour. There's nothing left for me, I love, Chase. There's only
[15:46] one thing for you to do. Turn yourself in, turn over what's left
[15:48] of the money, and you'll wait for that dollar. There's only one thing
[15:52] left. Wait a minute. Killing me is not going to do any good,
[15:56] Chase. Somebody else will take over and keep after you until they get
[15:58] you. And they will get you sooner or later. You can count on
[16:02] it. I know they'll keep coming after me. I can't run any more.
[16:07] Dollar. I won't take it any more from you or anybody. I
[16:11] just won't take it all. I never thought i'd be glad to get hit
[16:18] on the head, but just before I blacked out, I remember being very
[16:22] happy that it wasn't the bullet in the back I'd been expecting it. I
[16:26] don't know how long I was out, but when I came to Lola,
[16:30] Chase and George Everson, were bending over right? Are you all right?
[16:33] Johnny? Oh? Yeah, I guess so. Brother. In my head
[16:40] feels like I was on a pogo stick. What happened? Mister dollar?
[16:44] Chase was waiting for me here in my hotel room with a gun. Why
[16:47] did he come here for a very good reason to take me off his trail?
[16:49] For keeps? Oh? Yes, But when you phoned Lolla, it
[16:53] seemed a time of a notch to learn that you were here in Barbados.
[16:57] He started talking wildly, mister dollar. Lola and I'd still like to try
[17:02] the plan I mentioned to you, are not hear me out? We could
[17:04] just be wasting your breath, Everson, Tom Chase is not about to turn
[17:08] himself in now or ever. I still don't get it, though, Get
[17:12] what why he didn't kill me just now? And why he didn't kill me
[17:18] before in the waterfront warehouse or on Lagos Island. He had plenty of chances.
[17:22] It's almost as if, yes, I'll skip it, Everson. Suppose
[17:27] you take Lola back to her hotel. I'm going to check with police inspector.
[17:30] What's it? Well, what't you tell me, mister dollar? I'd
[17:38] say, Chase is just about the breaking point. Yeah, that's why we've
[17:42] got to track him down fast before he loses his head completely. Oh,
[17:45] they're continuing our check of hotels and rooming houses. I don't think there's anything
[17:49] else he can do for the moment. Excuse me, what's it here?
[17:56] Yes, in just a moment for you and mister Donner. Oh. Thanks,
[18:00] Hello, it's Lola, Johnny. He was just here, Chase,
[18:03] swear here at my hotel cottage. Please come quickly, Johnny, I'll be
[18:07] there in ten minutes. I made it an eight. Lola was still trumpling.
[18:12] It was horrible. He was talking wild crazy. You see which way
[18:15] he went? Yes, I got to the window in time to see him
[18:18] drive off to the mountain. Johnny, we've got to find him. He's
[18:22] out of his mind. We piled into the car and took off after Chase
[18:26] up a twisting, steep mountain road. Tell me what happened? What'd he
[18:33] say? I've never seen like that before, Johnny. He's sick the things
[18:37] he said, like what? Then it was all over. There was nothing
[18:41] left for him that he just wanted to see me once more before before what
[18:45] he didn't see? But oh, Johnny, we can't take these turns any
[18:49] faster. I begged him to turn himself in. He said he wished he
[18:53] could for my sake, but then he couldn't. Look, Lola, maybe
[18:57] he just took this route across the island the way he was talking, Johnny,
[19:02] I don't think he was trying to get across the island. Look up
[19:06] ahead, that's the car he was driving. Park beside the road, next
[19:10] to a cliff. All right, Lola, you'd better stay right here in
[19:15] the car. Yes, I guess i'd rather. I walked to the edge
[19:22] of the cliff and looked down. His body was crumbled up on the rocks
[19:26] below. I climbed down. He was dead, all smashed up. It
[19:32] wasn't pretty. I climbed back to my car. Lola just looked at me
[19:37] with the big question in her eyes. All I did was not. All
[19:42] she did was slump over on the seat. I drove her back to her
[19:47] hotel and phoned inspector whits it. Then I went back to my hotel.
[19:52] Expense account had him twenty nine three dollars drinks for me. I thought about
[19:56] a lot of things. Tom Chase, who'd had everything in his favor back
[20:02] in New York, but who'd embezzled one hundred and twenty thousand, had killed
[20:06] a man in New Orleans for trying to turn him in, but who hadn't
[20:08] killed me for trying the same thing, and who ended up at the bottom
[20:12] of a cliff in Barbados. I thought about Lola would come a long way
[20:17] for nothing except the final heartache, And I thought about me, who would
[20:21] also come a long way for nothing period. The next day I dropped in
[20:29] on Inspector Wester at police head quarters. Well, Dollar, i've missed you.
[20:33] Uh, I sort of took time out for a while, Inspector,
[20:37] I don't wonder. Yeah, this is Chase, of course, identified the
[20:41] buddy. The inquest was this morning, let it suicide buryls this afternoon here
[20:48] in Barbados. At first, missus Chase wanted to take the body back to
[20:51] New York, but mister Everson felt that that would just be adding another painful
[20:55] experience to those she'd already been through. Ah yeah, well I still don't
[21:00] have the money chasing Bezel. Inspector him, no, and offend. I'd
[21:04] say, the chances are finding it, We're not too good. Did you
[21:07] find anything at all in Chase's pockets that might give me a lead. Ooh,
[21:10] just the usual loose change his wallet, cigarettes, some matches and co
[21:15] book matches. Yeah, when the water burnt bar, we'll let me see
[21:18] him, inspector. It's not much, but it's the only thing I've got
[21:22] to go on. I went down to the waterfront bar named on the match
[21:27] folder and started calling the neighborhood. I checked every hotel in roaming house.
[21:32] Three hours later, I was about ready to give up, and then I
[21:34] found it. Yep, Chase's last hide on. I searched his room,
[21:40] but the money wasn't there. I went back to the desk and checked the
[21:44] register again, trying to find out if a woman had checked in about the
[21:45] same time Chase had no soap. But then I'd pulled out the sample of
[21:51] Chase's writing that ever since had given me a New York and I compared it
[21:53] to chase the signature on the register. A few wild ideas started chasing themselves
[21:57] around in my brain. Idea as I began to fall into a crazy pattern,
[22:02] Adam thirty twelve to sixty long distance phone called at the home office of
[22:04] Universal Adjustment in Haydford. I asked Pat McCrackan to run an air informing.
[22:10] Three hours later, we call back from New York City with the answer,
[22:12] yep, I'd come all the way to Barbados, but the case got solved
[22:17] in New York. I phoned Lola and Everson and asked them to come to
[22:21] the cemetery. Fifteen minutes later we met at the freshly turned grave. Mister
[22:25] Dollar, I must say you're not being considered the flower. I'm sure you
[22:27] realize it. Coming back to Tom's grave here is the most painful experience for
[22:32] I'm sure you had a good reason. Johnny, Yeah, yeah, I
[22:36] did. I wanted both of you to know what a jerk I've been in
[22:41] this investigation. Don't say that you've done everything that could be done, and
[22:45] I appreciate it. Well, thanks, Lola, But you see, for
[22:49] almost two weeks now, from New York to New Orleans to Barbados here,
[22:55] I've been chasing a dead man. Hi, I don't understand. I think
[22:59] you understand real Well, look here, if this is some kind of a
[23:02] joke, it's some very poor takee It's no joke. I've got a hand
[23:04] it to you both. Though you engineered the whole deal with just two people.
[23:08] What are you talking about dropped the act. Lola, the faithful grieving
[23:12] wife. You had me fool but good look, Dollar, You told me
[23:15] you took a trip alone about the time Tom was arrested. Lola, Oh
[23:18] that was true, but it wasn't to Martha's vineyard. You went down to
[23:22] New Orleans and rented a rum under the name of Tom James. You were
[23:26] the other woman I was looking for. That's a lie. You don't know
[23:29] what you're saying, Dollard. I Freddy Quintana in New Orleans showed me a
[23:33] letter Chase was supposed to have written. It matched the sample of Chase's writing
[23:37] you'd given me a New York Everson. Well, of course it did.
[23:41] That proves it proves that the sample you gave me in New York wasn't Chase's
[23:44] writing. I just checked by long distance phone. What Oh, yes,
[23:48] Freddy Quintanna played his quite real well. But what he didn't know was he
[23:52] was going to get paid off of a bullet. That was the day you
[23:56] turned up in New Orleans, Lola, to kill him. Shut his mouth,
[24:00] Dollar, let him finish. Oh, there's not much more. You
[24:03] hired the second guy to pose as your husband and lead me a merry Chase.
[24:07] That explains why he didn't kill me and why I was always able to
[24:11] pick up his trail. Again, I was supposed to. That's the way
[24:12] you were playing it. And all the time the real Tom Chase was dead.
[24:18] You probably killed him back in New York when he was supposed to have
[24:21] jumped bail and disappeared. Are you through dollar almost? Except for the money?
[24:26] You are the embezzler, Everson. It was you who juggled the accounts,
[24:32] and after I ran into a dead end down here with a fake Chase's
[24:34] death, you and Mulla could live happily ever afterward with the dog go on.
[24:37] Of course, the fellow you hired to pose his chase didn't realize he
[24:41] was going to get paid off the same way Contana was What are you talking
[24:44] about? The way you helped him over that cliff, Everson, to make
[24:45] it look like suicide. How did you know I probably wouldn't have tumbled to
[24:48] it if I hadn't checked his hand writing. Of course, you can't prove
[24:51] any of this, like to exhume the body, ship it back to New
[24:53] York and prove that it isn't the real Tom Chase. The bunny states where
[24:56] it is dollar Oh, put that gun down, and they already know most
[25:00] of the story. In New York, you're bluff And why didn't you call
[25:03] the bluff and find out. I think he's telling the truth, George.
[25:07] In that case, yes, you'd better take care of him, not we,
[25:12] Lola, not anymore. What do you mean. I think we'd better
[25:17] just dissolve the partnership. Don't try anything like that, George. This was
[25:21] our idea together, and you're in it as deep as I am. And
[25:22] that's why I'm leaving, Lola. I wish it had worked out, but
[25:26] as long as I do, can't do that. You've got the money.
[25:30] They both went for Everson at the same moment. The shot spun her around
[25:34] and crumpled her. I grabbed a gun from Everson. I'm afraid it's not
[25:41] serious. If his aim had been better, he'd have done you a favor.
[25:45] One thing I still don't get. Your husband wouldn't make any statement after
[25:48] his arrest. That means to me he knew what you were up to,
[25:52] and he loved you so much he was willing to take the rap. Tell
[25:56] me this, Lola, why did you marry the poor guy first place?
[26:06] Expenser count total seventeen and twenty three dollars. Lola and Everson were turned over
[26:11] to the authorities, and Everson gave up the key to a safe deposit box
[26:15] in New York where the embezzle money had been all the time. It also
[26:19] showed us the deserted spot on Long Island where he and Lola had hidden the
[26:23] body of the real Tom Chase remarks, Dear pat, next time you call
[26:30] me for an assignment like this one, I hope you get a busy signal.
[26:34] Yours truly, Johnny Dollar. Now here's our star to tell you about
[26:51] next week's story. Next week, a body suddenly rises from the grave to
[26:55] take the spotlight from a Hollywood star. Join us, won't you? You're
[27:00] truly Johnny Dollar. Yours truly Johnny Dollar is starring Bob Bailey, is transcribed
[27:11] in Hollywood. Written by Robert Wright, it is produced and directed by Jack
[27:15] Johnstone. Heard in our cast were Michael Ann, Barrett, Jack Edwards,
[27:18] Ben Wright, Virginia, greg Don Diamond, Boris Lewis, and Richard Crenna.
[27:23] Musical supervision by A. Marigo Marino. Be sure to join us on
[27:27] Monday night, same time and station for another exciting story of yours truly,
[27:33] Johnny Dollar, Roy Rowan speaking welcome back. Well, that was definitely a
[28:25] twist, almost worthy of let George do it, which kind of we were
[28:30] kind of set up with it looking like it be almost mediocre ending, but
[28:36] then we found out the truth and it's much more. I think of a
[28:40] classic hard boiled story the way that it ended as our whole understanding of the
[28:45] story and who the characters were literally changed in a moment. Though, as
[28:49] Johnny said, it was a crazy idea, but it does explain everything that
[28:55] happened in the story. Lola was the one, I think who really kept
[29:00] subtly giving it away in ways that we wouldn't understand and could perhaps only be
[29:06] picked up later. All right, Well, now on to some listener comments
[29:10] and feedback, and we start over on Facebook with this comment for Brook I
[29:17] love Johnny Dollar and I'm so sad the last of the episodes is coming up,
[29:22] And similarly a tweet from aug King of Bashian says, Adam loving the
[29:29] program, I'm not looking forward to the end of Johnny Dollar. We'll check
[29:33] out your books. Well, thanks so much, definitely appreciate you checking out
[29:38] the books. Regarding Johnny Dollar, this is not the end of Johnny Dollar.
[29:48] We have coming up, just the end of the serial era. After
[29:52] next week, we will have Johnny Dollars on Fridays for about another of four
[30:03] four and a half years, and most of that with Bob Bailey, but
[30:10] then Bob Readick and Manuel Kramer taking over. We have three and a half
[30:14] years with all Bailey to listen through, and then about a year and a
[30:18] half with others. So four and a half to five years left of yours
[30:22] truly Johnny Dollar, just adding some other shows on Mondays and Wednesdays. Ouga
[30:29] also rights Adam. Is Rocky Jordan a program you have shown or one that
[30:33] might be coming up. I really enjoyed it. Thanks, I've addressed this
[30:38] before. Rocky Jordan is one we did during our preview series as a program
[30:45] we weren't going to be doing in the next year or so. But when
[30:48] we intend to do eventually, how soon eventually it comes, I don't quite
[30:53] know yet. I have very solid with my plans for most of the schedule
[31:03] outside of Tuesdays for the next couple years and on Wednesday for about the next
[31:12] four years. I'm pretty firmly set but we will. It's sometime in the
[31:21] future going to be a ways, but I hope you enjoy the shows we
[31:23] play in the meanwhile, and then Twitter user talking Donkey tweets enjoy the show.
[31:32] Thanks for all your hard work blessings well, thank you so much.
[31:36] I do appreciate that. Finally, we have an email from Michelle who says,
[31:41] Hey, Adam, my dad and I really enjoy listening to your podcast.
[31:45] We are We started listening recently in March with the Old Time Radio Superman
[31:51] show and the disappearance of Clark can't follow by the secret letter. We also
[31:55] enjoy yours truly, Johnny Dollar. We have serious XM Radio a classics Wich
[32:00] Pace Johnny Dollar, but we usually aren't in the car long enough to finish
[32:04] all five parts of the episode, or the episode has already started to Your
[32:07] podcast have been a great help. I was looking in the history of the
[32:12] show and found that Bob Bailey did an unsuccessful TV pilot of Johnny Dollar in
[32:15] nineteen fifty eight. I tried looking for it but couldn't find it. Do
[32:21] you know anything about this? Also, with the serial era of Johnny Dollar
[32:24] coming in to an end in a couple of weeks. Are you going to
[32:27] go back to the rest of the Bob Daily episodes if you already talked about
[32:31] it in a podcast we haven't gotten to yet. My apologies. Any information
[32:35] you could supply would be greatly appreciated, and we'll be definitely sending in a
[32:38] donation. Thank you so much for the show. Well, Michelle, thanks
[32:43] so much. No need to apologize because we've done twelve hundred and some episodes
[32:50] and you can't expect listeners to go back through all the shows and hear all
[32:54] the comments, So some way issues come up several times, and that's okay.
[33:01] As I mentioned before, we definitely are going to go through the Bob
[33:05] Bailey half hour episodes, and those, particularly the early ones, tend to
[33:09] be entertaining. The thing with the Johnny Dollar TV pilots, I've heard different
[33:16] things about Johnny Dollar, Bob Bailey and TV pilots. Information I've been able
[33:22] to find was that there were two Johnny Dollar TV pilots made, none of
[33:28] which featured Bob Bailey. There also is a widely circulated radio interview that was
[33:34] done with Bob Bailey's daughter in which she stated that her father has given an
[33:39] opportunity to film a TV pilot, but was turned down because he didn't look
[33:45] telligenic enough. Whether that was a TV pilot for Johnny Dollar or a TV
[33:52] pilot for Let George do It, I don't know. I did check the
[33:57] Encyclopedia of Television Pilots and it lists two separate pilots. One was made in
[34:02] nineteen sixty two and it was called Johnny Dollar and it starred Gil Gerard.
[34:09] The other was made in nineteen forty nine and it starred Charles Russell. Was
[34:16] produced for CBS back in nineteen forty nine as a very early pilot, which
[34:22] was which if they're if they're accurate in the Encyclopedia of Television Pilots is kind
[34:30] of an odd thing to do, since Johnny Dollar had barely been on the
[34:35] air in nineteen forty nine. But thanks so much for the question. And
[34:39] if I ever track down a TV pilot anywhere, I will be sure and
[34:45] let listeners know well that will do it for today. Join us back here
[34:52] tomorrow for police headquarters, and on Monday we begin the very last of the
[34:58] Johnny Dollar serials, and next Friday, Manhunt returns, before moving to Monday
[35:04] for the rest of the run of that series in the meantime. If you
[35:07] have a comment, send it to me Box thirteen at Great Detectives dot net,
