[1:30] well, now it's time for today's episode of Yours Truly Johnny Dollar our
[1:34] first nineteen fifty seven episode, the Ellen Dere Matter from Hollywood. It's time
[1:41] now for Johnny Dollar Pat McCracken n universally Just Oh, hi, Brad,
[1:49] what's on your mind? The sleek, lovely, beautiful Ellen. On the
[1:53] strength of that description, I'll take care. And she's loaded dollars worth of
[1:57] jewelry. Hey, girl needs a bodyguard. Yeah, Johnny needs a guard
[2:02] of some kind. Unless he isn't the guru, he's a vote. I've
[2:06] just lost my enthusiasm. What's the matter with the old cup? That's what
[2:08] I want you to find out, Johnny. That lands crag suddenly got me
[2:12] interested again. Okay, Pat, I'll be right over Bob Bailey and the
[2:23] Exciting Adventures of the Man with the action packed Expenser count America's fabulous freelance insurance
[2:30] investigators, Truly Johnny Dollar. Expense accounts submitted by Special Investigator Johnny Dollar the
[2:49] Western Maritime and Property Insurance Company, Los Angeles, California. Following is an
[2:53] account of expenses incurred during my investigation of the Ellen dar matter. Expenser con
[3:02] had a one ninety cents taxi from my apartment of the offices of Universal Adjustment
[3:06] Bureau, and hertrig Fred McCracken's usual smile was noticeably missing when I walked in
[3:10] on him. Thanks. Oh and you're the build Western Maritime and property on
[3:16] this one instead of us. Okay, but how are you involved? We
[3:20] handle all their claims that are of any size. Tory you ever hear of
[3:23] Randolph Berman? I know of a jewelry down in New York. That's the
[3:29] one. And if you know him, Johnny, you've been putting too much
[3:31] gravy in your expensive con. I said no of him. Didn't he bring
[3:36] in the Star of Cape down and they came and do Emerald? That's right.
[3:40] Everybody seems to think he's a crook, and yet somehow he manages to
[3:44] handle some of the finest jewels in the world. Are got an honest man
[3:46] afforded? This time? It's the Bettonhouse collection. It's out of Hungary.
[3:52] Oh yeah, right about that. Only I thought somebody down in Mexico own
[3:55] it. Yeah, fellow named Rigo Mariani down in Wadalajara. He's the one
[3:59] who's sold it to Randolph Bourman. Okay, now is this Ellen, dear?
[4:02] You mentioned Burman's wife? No, no, no, former wife.
[4:06] He's in about his fifth or beautiful dumb dolls. But more important it's the
[4:12] name of his seventy two foot motor cruiser than the Burmans had been traveling around
[4:15] in it, down the coast, through the canal, along the coast of
[4:18] Central America and so on. Anyhow, when he got worried that the Bettenhouse
[4:21] collection could be had, he wasted no time in getting to Wadalajara. And
[4:27] that's where Western Maritime and Property comes in, right. They had already written
[4:30] a policy on the boat for fifty two thousand. Their main office in Los
[4:33] Angeles was close at hand, so he had them write the policy on the
[4:38] Jewel. Is that where Burman is now in Los Angeles? No, No,
[4:41] he's still in Mexico. Didn't want to move with those priceless rocks until
[4:44] he was certain of the insurance, and before Western would write it. Of
[4:47] course, they wanted the collection of prey. Actually, but who in Mexico.
[4:51] Jacques Jean Pierre, famous gemologists, was right there in Wadalahara, you
[4:55] know, to look over the collection himself. So he made the appraisal.
[4:59] The policy has been issued three hundred and twenty five thousand. I still don't
[5:03] see anything wrong with the whole deal. Pat Well, there isn't anything wrong
[5:06] with it yet. But in spite of Berman standing in the profession, his
[5:12] reputation. It isn't everything it might be. I come to think if it
[5:15] wasn't there a killing or too involved in this acquisition of the Star of several
[5:20] things like that, He's been involved in attempts to smuggle in some valuable pieces
[5:24] he's oh he always managed somehow to come out smelling like a rose. Legally
[5:30] perfectly clean, you understand, but you still don't trust. Oh No,
[5:34] And with his planning to carry that load of stuff around in his yacht.
[5:39] Yes see what you mean. If anything happened to those rocks over the boat,
[5:43] over three hundred grand right out the window exactly. Now. Relatedly,
[5:47] Western is worried about it, and they've paid good money to have you assuage
[5:51] their worries. You have a Mexican tourist, gud sure from my last fishing
[5:56] trip down there, and I think you better go down and guard that collection
[5:59] until Berman gets safely up into the States. He's considered quite the host.
[6:02] He'll probably be perfectly willing to have you aboard. Now, this is the
[6:05] kind of assignment I like, yaching in the Blue Pacific. But surely he
[6:11] hasn't got his boat park in Guadalajara. That's over one hundred miles inland.
[6:14] Oh, it's at last land, and from what I've been able to learn,
[6:16] it's surrounded by armed guards day and night. While he has some engine
[6:20] work done, but as soon as that's finished, he'll head north to the
[6:24] state. So he says, got a branch office in Los Angeles. He'll
[6:27] probably deliver the collection there. I just want to be sure he gets there.
[6:31] Johnny, hmm, okay, Pat, you can wire the boys at
[6:35] Weston that I'm on my way. Item two one hundred and ninety one forty
[6:42] Plain Fair and Incidentals Hartford, musset Land via Los Angeles. The first leg
[6:46] of the flight to LA was uneventful, except for a good looking young blonde
[6:51] from Santa Barbara, whom I promised look up as soon as his case is
[6:56] well, that's not for the expense account. When we arrived at the Los
[6:59] Angeles and An National Airport, I learned that I'd have a three quarter hour
[7:01] wait for my planing to mazzic Land, so I grabbed a magazine that's had
[7:04] him three thirty five cents. When I heard my name being called on the
[7:08] PIA system, Johnny dollars with a thought in mind that perhaps my little friend
[7:15] for the plane might have decided to stay over in La. Her name was
[7:17] readA by the way, I lost no time in getting over at the pan
[7:20] Am desk. Mister Dollars. Yeah, Johnny Dollar, that's right. I'm
[7:25] Arthur Arthur, Western Maritime and Property Insurance. Come. Oh yeah, I'm
[7:29] doing mister Arthur planning to go on down the mazzot Land with me. No,
[7:32] no, meet Monsieur Jeanques Jean Pierre. I am are you, mister
[7:38] Tempierre? This is the gentleman who are praised that Thatton How's collection plus.
[7:41] Oh yes he is. I am an as issue the policy on it to
[7:43] mister Burman. Oh yeah, yes, he's done this sort of thing for
[7:46] us many times. I'm afraid that he's brought us rather bad news. Something's
[7:50] already happened at the collection. Well, not exactly, not to the whole
[7:54] collection, please, that is I'm not quite sure what I mean is what
[8:00] do you mean? Mister? Perhaps I should explain to mister Dalla eh I
[8:03] thank somebody better. Yes, you go ahead, John very well, and
[8:07] while you're doing it, I'll cancel the rest of Miss Dallars reservation. To
[8:09] Macedlan yes, I'll do. Now wait a minute, first, let me
[8:13] find out what this is all about. We we joque here was in guade
[8:18] Laja when the Batonhouse collection became available for purchase, Yes, mister da,
[8:22] I had gone there in the hope that some of the pieces might be purchased
[8:26] separately. So alas such was not the case, the Marianni firm decided to
[8:31] dispose of the collection only a whole. I say, well, what's this
[8:35] bad news you have? Ah? I am getting into yes, please please
[8:39] please, and then go ahead yoah, thank you, thank you, mister
[8:43] interested. As I was, I looked over the collection very carefully, each
[8:46] individual piece, and you must believe me to an expert like myself. Every
[8:52] facet of Jim has a character. All the tone, a precious tone,
[8:56] is like a face to me, always to be remas yeah, well gone.
[9:01] I simply wish to make it clear to you, monsieur, that every
[9:05] item in the Better House collection is completely familiar to me, as are many
[9:09] other important games throughout the world. You know, each is like a friend,
[9:11] and a stone in him is like a face. Precisely or where is
[9:16] to be remembered? Yes, well, the collection is purchased by Monsieur Randolph
[9:20] Berman. Yes, yes, please please, he wishes to ensure it in
[9:24] Monsieur Athur's company. Yeah, I know all, miss Arthur replaced by telephone
[9:28] that I appraise it three hundred and twenty five thousands. Ah, then you
[9:31] know, I know. So I stay at Golahara a few days to wait
[9:35] Monsieur Arthur's check for my service. Please, I visited some of my old
[9:41] friend among the duel settons, and then then on the third day, what
[9:46] do you think happens? You tell me, Jenny, this is it?
[9:52] Please answer? In the shop of my friend Garcia and no days I watched
[9:58] him work on the mound for a beautiful diamond, and suddenly I see that
[10:03] this stone is an old friend one from the patent house collection. We the
[10:07] CALIBERG diamond that was supposedly in the position of Monsieur Bourman. You're sure of
[10:13] the identity of that stone, mister Jean Pierre. Please, as I told
[10:16] you, Monsieur, I press your stone to me. Yeah, it's like
[10:20] a face to you. So what you figure, Arthur, is that you've
[10:24] ensured a boatload of three hundred thousand dollars worth of gems on the way to
[10:26] the USA, and maybe they're not on board exactly unless, of course,
[10:31] mister Jean Pierre, did you tell mister Berman about this one stone Blo.
[10:33] I went immediately to matstt Land, where I knew he had his book The
[10:37] L and D Or what did he say at last? He at the way?
[10:41] Did you learn his destination? Oh? Yeah, a Los Angeles Johnny
[10:45] right here, he has a branch office. Well has he had time to
[10:48] get here yet? I don't think so. Have you tried radioly to his
[10:50] yacht? No, no, I've done nothing. You see, I didn't
[10:52] learn about this until mister Jean Pierre arrived just a few hours ago. Yes,
[10:56] I came up in the areoplane. The better to arrive and speak with
[10:58] mister there before Monsieur Berman. You know where Burman plans to dock his both
[11:05] Probably the port in San Pedro if he's coming here, but who can be
[11:09] sure. Usually on vacation trips he docks down the coast of Balboa, the
[11:13] yacht club or who knows he might either Yeah, he might have no intention
[11:18] of coming up to the States at all. He might not even have the
[11:20] jewels with him, he Arthur, do you know where his branch office is
[11:26] usually it's in Los Angeles. Well, actually it's in Beverly Hill. Got
[11:28] a car, then let's go. Though he couldn't quite put his finger on
[11:35] it, Arthur was convinced that Randolph Burman was up to something and that his
[11:39] insurance company was going to have to take the rack on the way in the
[11:43] vermin's Beverly Hills office. We dropped Jean Pierre at the Beverly Hilton and Tonam
[11:46] to sit tight in case we needed him again. Burman's office was in a
[11:48] nice mudern building on South Beverly Drive, tastically furnish with pictures of various famous
[11:54] jewels on the walls, but with nothing in predicative value and evidence. However,
[11:58] I did notice that one wall held a built in vault big enough for
[12:01] a reasonably sized bank. We were approached by a hand rubbing, obsequious little
[12:05] character dressed in strippered pants and cutaway coat and wearing thick glasses. Good morning,
[12:11] gentlemen. Is there any way I may be of service to you?
[12:13] Yeah? I think there is? Are you, mister Arthur? Forgive me
[12:16] I didn't recognize you for a moment. Mister Corrello, this is mister Johnny
[12:20] Duck. How do you do? Is there something I may show you,
[12:24] mister Dollar, some little babble perhaps for a charming lady. Wow, not
[12:28] at the moment. Oh, mister Arthur, there's no reason to mail this
[12:31] to you. Let me see now. Oh, yes, here is Here
[12:35] is a request for slight revision of the policy on the Betonhouse collection. Oh
[12:39] what's this? With a wire? Was sent by mister Berman just before he
[12:43] embarked for massive Land. I was going to put it in the letter form
[12:46] to be war but well I read this. Please request Arthur revise Betonhouse policies
[12:54] exclude calibar diamond value four thousand, which I have sold private party in what
[13:01] la horror? We kind of guess wrong, didn't hm, mister Carl.
[13:09] Yes, has mister Berman wired you? Whether he's coming here? Oh?
[13:13] Of course he is with that collection? When when is he going to arrive?
[13:16] And he's lovely yacht the Allendia should reach San Pedro Harbor late tonight.
[13:20] But that's what he wired me, and I intend to meet him there then
[13:22] I'm sure you won't mind if I go with you. Oh and mister Dowland
[13:26] is a special investigating investigator. Well, actually, I'm here just to help
[13:31] mister Burman protect that collection. Oh excellent, then you can arrange for the
[13:35] police escort. Yes, and alert the harbor police to guard the allendears,
[13:37] mister Benman requested, Did he request then? Oh? Indeed, But apparently
[13:41] he hasn't been worried about anything happening to the collection. Wow, he's at
[13:45] set's see. Oh surely you don't mean pirates or anything like that, and
[13:50] this modern taenae, you know something. At this point, I'm not quite
[13:54] sure what I mean or even why I'm here. Well, of course I'm
[14:01] well, of course what tark oh excuse me while I answered that, Well,
[14:05] I mean that is why. Well, at least I'll feel better when
[14:11] the stuff is here in the ball. Oh no. Correlo at the phone
[14:16] paled visibly, then gasped and clutched the back of a chair for support.
[14:20] As he listened to the phone, his jaw dropped, his eyes widened,
[14:24] and he shook his head once or twice and horrified disbelief. Finally, slowly,
[14:28] he hung up and came unsteadily toward us. Mister Corilla, Yeah,
[14:31] what is it, miss Corilla? That the coast guard? Yes, they
[14:37] said the Ellender, Yes sunk and six hundred feet of water and the altar
[14:46] Cha, Act too of yours truly, Johnny Dollar, in just a moment
[15:07] democracy? What has it to do with money, the medium of exchange of
[15:11] mankind? A couple of thousand years ago, it was said that money alone
[15:16] sets the world in motion. That's one way of saying that money and economy
[15:20] are virtually one and the same thing. The economy of a nation depends on
[15:26] its commerce. Commerce depends on manufacturing and services. It has been proven that
[15:31] those nations which practice democracy have the greatest economics. That means money, more
[15:37] money for more people, and a greater freedom of opportunity to earn a higher
[15:41] standard of living. That's why democracy provides mankind with its richest legacy of freedom.
[15:48] Now, act too of yours truly, Johnny Dollar, and the Ellender
[15:52] matter expense account had him four seven dollars even for a fast taxi ride a
[16:03] Coast Guard headquarters in San Pedro, which is really the port of Los Angeles.
[16:07] By then, of elbowing my way in, I got directly to Captain
[16:10] Bonnie Thorson. You've got only half the story, mister Dallan. All I
[16:14] know Captain is that the Ellendar went down at some six hundred feet of water
[16:17] in the outer channel, total loss. That's correct. However, what you
[16:21] don't know is that the passengers, mister and Missus Burman and the crew were
[16:25] picked up and brought in here. Oh, outside of a little soaking and
[16:29] a little scare, they were probably all right. You see, the Ellen
[16:33] Dear, he had apparently had some engine trouble before she left massive Land,
[16:36] and so I understand the Mexican authority is with whom we fully cooperate, notified
[16:40] as we'd better keep an eye out for her. So when she reached the
[16:42] channel, we weren't surprised to get a radio call from her asking us to
[16:45] stand by that universal jount was kicking up. Is that what happened? By
[16:52] the time one of our cutters got withinhaling distance, she was on the way
[16:55] down. The propeller shaft had whip loose going through the hull, and Ellen
[17:00] Dear was sinking fast. Ask me that boat was overpowered, Dolly, how
[17:03] do you mean? Well, it must have been because sheer tuck tore the
[17:07] whole engine loose from its mountings and it plowed through the bottom along with everything
[17:11] else on board that was heavy with a big safe. For instance, an
[17:15] could admitted a safe a save you know, a small heavy steel vault right
[17:18] now that went down to with the engine. With all our boys could do
[17:22] to keep the owner from diving over after it was crying like a baby.
[17:27] You'd think you'd had the Crown jewels in it. Maybe you're not too wrong
[17:33] at that, right, Not the Crown jewels perhaps, but a collection worth
[17:37] something over three hundred grand. What about salvage salvage operations and six hundred feet
[17:44] of water in that channel? Yeah, no, dolly, salvage even if
[17:48] it were possible, it cost a couple of times the worth of that stuff.
[17:51] At least the only passages were the burman's. Huh, that's ray proved
[17:55] three and they weren't able to save anything, nothing, not of any consequence.
[17:59] That is, one of the crew didn't even have his shoes and his
[18:02] shirt on. What about Berman and his wife? It's funny what people who
[18:06] are doing in an emergency sometimes. What do you mean, Well, you've
[18:08] heard about the man whose house catches fire. He's panicky, throws all the
[18:12] china and the glassware out the window and carries out the mattress. What are
[18:17] you getting at, Captain? The only thing Burman saved in his excitement was
[18:21] two beat up old hats and the fishing rids. Oh yeah, and all
[18:25] his wife brought along was a handful of nylon stockings. She was hanging on
[18:29] him for dear life. Oh yeah, a big hat box for the Knevening
[18:32] dress, half hanging out of it. And that's all. That's all.
[18:34] Hey, you know that missus Burman's quite a dish, not too bright,
[18:38] but we a looker. Where are they now? Captain? They headed for
[18:41] Beverly Hills, Beverly, Wiltshire was the hotel. I think any event,
[18:45] Dollar, I'm afraid your company is going to have a big fat claim to
[18:51] pay on the yacht. Yes, what's that means? What do you think?
[19:00] IDAM five three twenty long distance call to the police in mazac Land.
[19:03] I wanted to be sure that the Betonhouse collection had been on board the Ellander
[19:07] when she left port. Down there, Inspector Romulo assured me it had that
[19:11] he'd checked the safe on the boat himself before allowing it to sail. Furthermore,
[19:15] he had insisted his own maritime service keep tabs on it up to the
[19:18] point where it had made contact with the US Coast Guard. In other words,
[19:21] the loot couldn't very well have been passed to someone else at sea.
[19:25] I HadAM six five eighty cab fair to Beverly Hills, where I dropped in
[19:27] at Berman's office. No, mister Dollar, he and missus Bermon are at
[19:30] the Beverly Wiltshire. I'm sure you understand it's been necessary for them to buy
[19:34] a lot of clothes and things. Yeah, but he will come here,
[19:37] Oh yes, yes, Indeed from his last phone call, i'd say he'll
[19:41] be here within the hour. All right, then I'll come back. Please
[19:44] ask him to stick around and wait for me if he doesn't mind, of
[19:47] course, mister Dollar, I should be glad to. Oh, incidentally,
[19:48] he has had me phone mister Arthur and ask that claim forms for both the
[19:52] Betonhouse collection and the loss of the cruiser be brought here to the office just
[19:56] as quickly as possible. Yeah, I'd figured as much. Burman wasn't wasting
[20:06] any time. All I know, there still wasn't any concrete evidence that Berman
[20:11] was trying to pull a fast one night Ostensively. The only reason for my
[20:14] trip out here was to watch over that fabulous duel collection. A lot of
[20:18] good I'd been. He lost the collection and his boats and the company he'd
[20:22] have to pay. Then a wild idea hit me. I suddenly remembered something
[20:27] that had happened months ago, last July, to be exact, what a
[20:32] big passenger liner, the Andrea Doria, had sunk off the Atlantic coast.
[20:37] According to the papers. When the survivors were brought into the port, the
[20:40] usual customs inspection was waived. And it occurred to me at the time that
[20:45] every one of those people could have easily smuggled in anything he could carry or
[20:48] conceal in his clothing. I'm not saying it did happen. I'm sure it
[20:52] didn't, but it could have. And if such an idea occurred to me,
[20:56] why not to a man like Burman? I was already pretty well known
[20:59] for his tricks to have customs. It HadAM six twenty cents phone called to
[21:03] the coast Guarden, Captain Thorson Johnny Dollar. Captain, answer me just one
[21:07] question. Will you sure what when you brought them in? Whether Burman's required
[21:11] to pass through customs? Well, no, of course not. It hardly
[21:15] be any reason, thank you very much had him seven ten cents. Another
[21:22] call, this time to author author at Western Maritime and Property Insurance. You
[21:26] caught me in the n Johnny. I was just walking out the door when
[21:30] your way to Berman's office with a handful of claims forms. Now listen,
[21:36] get there as fast as you can, get there ahead of them, so
[21:38] that you can see if he brings anything into the office like the Betton House
[21:41] collection. What though, I doubt if he'd be that foolish, foolish or
[21:45] not, how could he, Johnny, That collection, unfortunately is at the
[21:48] bottom of the ocean. Listen to me. Keep him there, maybe on
[21:52] the pretext of having their way for me, any reason you can think of.
[21:53] I'm afraid I don't have Just hold him until I get there. Understand
[21:56] very well, Johnny, But what are you going to do, Arthur?
[22:00] I may have to break in and rob a hotel room. I went out
[22:07] and stationed myself across the street from the Beverly Wilshire. Five minutes later,
[22:11] I saw Randolph Berman walk out the front door and head east on Wilshire Boulevard
[22:15] in the direction of his office on Beverly Drive. I waited a few minutes
[22:18] to make sure he didn't turn back. Then into the hotel. At the
[22:22] desk, I learned a number of Bermont's sweet on the ninth floor. Break
[22:26] in here, it would have taken a battering ram, so I tried knocking.
[22:34] All right, all right, you don't have to bust down the doors
[22:40] matter. You forget your keen. No, get out of here, buddy,
[22:47] Randy said not to let anybody in. He's out buying us clothes.
[22:52] Or he tells you to let me in. Baby, Hey, who are
[22:56] you? R Randy sent me up here from Guadalajara. Oh you are.
[23:03] We'll have a drink. Then a girl's entitled to a couple of drinks after
[23:07] that dusing in the ocean, And you might as well what about her,
[23:11] Nandy? Yeah, husband sold in the wrong stone from that collection, so
[23:18] he gave it to him. Well then you know about it? Oh sure,
[23:22] so he could make a legit looking change in the insurance and convince everybody

[23:55] the right stone from that collection, the Caliber diamond. Then I'll leave this
[23:57] one i've got in my part. I get here. Which one you got?
[24:02] Let me see it? Oh no, no, only mister Berman,
[24:03] and only when he gives me the calibar. Which one you got there?
[24:07] Huh, never mind, I'll show it to mister Burn. I just want
[24:08] to see it, not until I get the kelibar from the collection. So
[24:12] if he isn't here, if he's taken it to the office, I'll just
[24:15] you think he's crazy. Let everybody know he let me see the one you

[24:37] I let the bellboy in love the drinks, and I let you, And
[24:40] then I well, let me see the one you got, will you?
[24:45] I get you the other one from the hat box that didn't have to go
[24:49] through customs. How did you go? Hey, cute? I bet you
[24:59] read of us Andrew Doyce. That's like Grandy did. Where is the hat
[25:03] box? Ye? No, wait a minute, maybe I am them.
[25:12] Who'd you say you are? Where is the headbox? No? I won't
[25:19] tell you. You get out of here now without the collection vie. No,
[25:22] you can't. And he would kill me, kill me if you even
[25:30] knew. I'll let you in here, Johnny Dollar Insurance investigators. Please,
[25:34] Johnny, get out of here. Stuff in the bedroom. You can't go
[25:37] in there. I mean it, he'd kill me. Sorry, but that's
[25:41] your worry, upset your eyes out. I hate to do this. That's
[25:48] right, that's right. I get the manager, Ruby, I get the
[25:49] police up here. Oh yes, then you'd really be in trouble. You'd
[25:59] be better off firm and tried to kill you. Now, where's the stuff?
[26:03] It's in a closet on the floor, the hat box. Real,
[26:14] well, it's just a handful of weather force. Well oh now, wait
[26:21] a minute, girl, put down that bottle. I gotta stop you kill
[26:25] me. Don't you understand just letting you in here? You don't know it.
[26:27] Look, baby, you're in this thing deep enough as it is.
[26:30] Don't try to make it any worse. For yourself. What do you find
[26:32] out that I ys come back? Opened up my hands? I do where
[26:40] I go? Right here? Behind this closet door. Quickly, Ah,
[26:45] Johnny, there hang under that bottle. I'm thinking over what I told you
[26:48] about getting in deeper? Where'd you get these drinks? Let somebody in here?
[26:57] Bell boy? I you half witted bird brain? I told who are
[27:07] you? The name is Dollar, mister Berman Insurance Dick. I just dropped
[27:12] by to pick up the Beton House collection. Put it down, Dollar,
[27:18] I'm a good shot with his things. Yeah, and it wouldn't be the
[27:22] first time you killed over a handful of jewelry. What it? That's right,
[27:25] won't be the last. You'll never know about it? And I always
[27:27] by How should I know? You? Let you in here? I'm murdered.
[27:32] That dizzy blonde, that Disney blonde is a lot smarter than you think.
[27:36] Where is she? What do you mean by helping me? She has
[27:38] a chance of getting out of this mess you've involved her in. I'm getting
[27:41] out clean that dirty two time, and Dollar, I'm gonna kill you.
[27:48] You'd even like to involve her in that too, wouldn't she? Thanks for
[27:52] the idea. I'll make it look like she killed. Oh you nice work
[28:06] with that bottle. Buy what you mister? You won't let me? No,
[28:10] no, don't worry, baby. He won't bother anybody, not for
[28:14] a long long time. And I made two hundred and forty five dollars even
[28:22] incidentals during a couple of days of relaxation unto the California Sun and transportation back
[28:26] to Hartford expense account total four hundred and fifty three dollars ninety five cents.
[28:30] Remarks by way of getting off as easily as possible by saying like a canary,
[28:37] and incidentally cleared up a couple of other of his shady deals. The
[28:40] result, by the time his prison term runs out, he'll be too long
[28:44] dead to collect the insurance on his Jack and the remarks. Send a report,
[28:48] yours truly, Johnny do now here is our star to tell you about
[29:04] next week's story. Next week it is soal matter, and I promise you
[29:07] a double barrel thrill in it. Join us, won't you? Yours truly?
[29:12] Johnny Dall yours truly, Johnny Dollar, starring Bob Bailey, originates in
[29:22] Hollywood. It is produced and directed by Jack Johnstone, who also wrote Tonight's
[29:26] story. Heard in our cast were Virginia, Greg Laurence Dobkin, Howard mcneer,
[29:30] Jane Novello, Jack Edward, Barney Phillips, and Raymond Burr. Musical
[29:33] supervision is by A. Marigo Marino. Be sure to join us next week,
[29:37] same time and station for another exciting story of yours truly. Johnny Dollar
[29:42] Dan coverly speaking, Johnny Dollar has come to you through the worldwide facilities of
[30:03] the United States Armed Forces Radio and Television Service. Welcome back. Well,
[31:27] this one started out kind of slow, but I think ended pretty strongly.
[31:33] And I was kind of reminded with Johnny's observation about him imagining someone sneaking something
[31:41] through customs. And I observe that there are some people, and I actually
[31:48] count myself amongst them, that think of ways that things can be used for
[31:53] sinister purposes. And maybe it comes from listening to mysteries. Maybe in some
[31:57] cases it comes from right mysteries. And I actually got the I know that
[32:05] when you write mysteries at all, or have to be on the lookout for
[32:09] sinister sorts of things. And I remember seeing a friend do something and said,
[32:16] boy, that would actually really be an opportunity for someone to get some
[32:22] poison in and so I actually use that in Slime Incorporated. Sometimes you feel
[32:28] really weird about that of having those sort of thought processes, and certainly that's
[32:34] probably a case with people in security related fields. Johnny sees opportunities for fraud
[32:39] and all sorts of mouthfeasons. It just comes with the territory, all right.
[32:45] Well, some listener comments and feedback and we start from Val who says
[32:52] it's Johnny Doller's love and girlfriend here. I'm just using the BBC I Player
[32:55] to listen to series one of this wonderful series. Mcclevey, I wonder if
[33:00] you've had a chance to hear it. I'm not sure if the eye player
[33:02] is available in the US, but I think it is. I've also found
[33:06] that it's available to buy via Audible anyway. It's on BBC Radio four Extra
[33:12] for free if you can access it. Based on real life experiences of a
[33:15] detective in Edinburgh, the attict sends are a little challenging perhaps, but I
[33:19] think it's wonderful. He loves his coffee as an interracing, inter resting relationship
[33:25] with a woman who runs a house of ill repo. The star is Ryan
[33:29] Cox and I was listening to my battered old iPod yesterday shopping and laughed out
[33:37] loud when you read out my aha comment on the Chase matter. Needless to
[33:42] say, people looked at me askance best wishes from London. Well, thanks
[33:45] so much and I will try and get a listen to it. And if
[33:49] you're listening to it now, the first episode of the series will no longer
[33:52] be available by the time it comes out, but it looks like they're rerunning
[33:59] the whole first series on BBC Radio four Extra, so you can catch a
[34:04] sample of it to see if it's something that you were interested. They've done
[34:08] several series of it and you know, it is remarkable. And I've said
[34:13] it many times that while the Golden Age of radio ended in the United States,
[34:19] radio is definitely alive both in the United States and around the world as
[34:23] a dramatic form, particularly in the United Kingdom where BBC runs so many programs
[34:30] and they also have the big finish productions. Val also had a comment on
[34:35] Facebook and says, isn't a Marigo Marino a great name? I always listen
[34:44] out for him when the Johnny Dollar credits roll and Renee I shared a comment
[34:49] says when I was a child growing up in the sixties and seventies, the
[34:52] Birmingham, Alabama Symphony Orchestra would have concerts for school children from the entire area
[34:58] for a small fee. We would be bust into downtown for the concerts.
[35:01] The conductor was Amerigo Marino. Hearing the name on Johnny Dollar did not connect
[35:07] with me until Adam mentioned it once he had left CBS to go to Alabama
[35:14] to conduct. In Alabama, it was pronounced amor ammor rego, not amigo.
[35:27] I hope I pronounced the pronunciations correctly if I didn't apologize, but I
[35:34] did decide to Derek, thanks so much for sharing, and I'm glad that
[35:37] you got to enjoy his other conducting work because this Johnny Dollar remains just incredibly
[35:44] a well scored program. Well, that will do it for today. Join
[35:47] us back here tomorrow when we will bring you police headquarters, and then next
[35:53] Friday it'll be yours, truly, Johnny Dollar. In the meanwhile, send
[35:58] your comments to Box thirty henat Great Detectives dot Net from Boise, Idaho.
[36:04] This is your host, Adam Grahamson and all
