[1:57] Christmas time, but for May, we're going to skip to December thirtieth of
[2:01] nineteen fifty six. In the day the toddle of today's episode The Squared Circle
[2:07] Matter from Hollywood. It's time now for Johnny Dellar, Paul Kendrick, Johnny
[2:17] over at Eastern Allied Casualty remember, Oh sure, Paul, how are you
[2:21] seen any good fights? Lavely Prize Fie? That is Yeah, the championship
[2:24] bottled the stadium over in Maulville last week. Were you there? No,
[2:28] I had a miss it, but it didn't miss me. Huh. The
[2:30] minute Georgia hit the canvas in that fourth round, it cost me fifty bucks.
[2:34] Johnny, do you remember al Colornado? Are you kidding? I've watched
[2:37] that boy come up from the Golden Gloves. Well, he fought in one
[2:39] of the preliminary bouts. I know I lost on him to twenty bucks.
[2:43] Come on over, will you, and I'll tell you why the company may
[2:46] lose fifty thousand. Done. Bob Bailey in the Exciting Adventures of the Man
[2:58] with the Action pactickst America's fabulous freelance insurance investigators, Truly Johnny Dollar. Expense
[3:17] account submitted by special investigator Johnny Dollar to Eastern Allied Casualty Insurance Company four to
[3:23] two Spital Building, Hartford, Connecticut. Following is an account of expenses incurred
[3:27] during my investigation of the squared Circle matter. Expense account had a one a
[3:36] dollar ten cents camp from my apartment to the offices of Eastern Allied. When
[3:39] I got upstairs into his personal cubicle, I found Paul Kendrick pacing the floor.
[3:45] Sit down, Johnny, have a drink if you want one. No,
[3:47] no thanks, Hey, looks like you're the one who could use a
[3:52] drink. What are you worried about? Don't tell me you've ben hitting the
[3:55] company till for big money to bet on the fights. Johnny, I'm worried
[3:59] about. Listen, I'm all yours. How long since you've seen al Coronado
[4:03] fight? Ooh six months? Year maybe? But before that, when he
[4:06] was working all the local arenas, you and I were present every time he
[4:10] put on the gloves, so we knew him when he had reflexes quick enough
[4:13] to well, do you remember how he'd show off by picking a fly or
[4:16] mosquito out of the air, grabbing it between his fingers without even hurting it.
[4:19] Yeah. Sure, he was no metal giant, not by a long
[4:23] shot. But he had the fastest eyes and hands I ever saw in the
[4:26] man. Right. But something has happened to him, something very wrong,
[4:29] and I think I know what it is. Listen, a few years ago,
[4:32] his manager, Ricky Malone, took out a fifty thousand dollars policy on
[4:35] him annuity. So what a lot of managers take out policies on their boys
[4:40] and then get him killed. Look Al is fighting again tomorrow night in a
[4:44] small town outside of Joplin, choppin Missouri, little place just across the state
[4:48] line. Johnny, I want you to be there. You mean has a
[4:53] sort of bodyguard. I want you to see the fight. That's all.
[4:55] See Al Coronado fight. Yeah, but this murder crack. I'm having a
[4:59] copy of the policy he made and you can pick it up at the Joplin
[5:00] Post Office General Delivery. Now, Paul, I know, I know I
[5:03] may be all wrong. This may only be a hunch without a single legitimate
[5:08] reason for suspicion. That's why I took a whole week to think it over
[5:11] before calling you. That's why I want somebody who knows AL as well as
[5:15] you and I do to look. Will you go down there and see him?
[5:18] Why? We'll pay the freight pand your expense account anything you like.
[5:21] Oh, now that's an attack, but do it, Johnny? Will you?
[5:30] I had them two another dollar ten back to my apartment a pack.
[5:34] I had them three one hundred and twenty four dollars even playing fair, and
[5:38] incidentals to Joplin by your lead, Paul. The incidentals included a new sports
[5:43] shirt loud enough to startle the whole state of Arizona, an extra pack of
[5:46] razor blades, and a new toothbrush. Also, I had them four three
[5:48] bucks flowers for the stewardess, who managed to find me an extra bottle of
[5:53] champaigne. I arrived at Joplin shortly before noon, and after checking into a
[5:57] hotel founded by some miracle, a copy of AL policy was waiting for me
[6:00] at the post office. A quick glance at that brings up item five four
[6:04] dollars and a quarter phone call. What do you mean holding out on you?
[6:09] I thought you, said, Ricky Malone took out the policy. He
[6:12] did and pays all the premiums. But the beneficiary named is Frankie Fourtina.
[6:17] Now ho see I don't know yet. Well, his address is in New
[6:20] York City. You've better look him up, will you. I've been trying
[6:23] to. But the last time FOURTEENA was at the address on the policy,
[6:26] it was a racetrack bookie joint. Oh so that's why you're worried. That's
[6:30] one reason. Well, if you learn anything about I don't let me know.
[6:32] Well, you I'm staying in the Beverly Arm Okay, Johnny, Johnny,
[6:35] Yeah, call me again, will you? After the fight tonight?
[6:40] Sure, I was tired, so I had a big lunch that had him
[6:50] six, went out to my room and slept. I overslept. It was
[6:54] nearly nine o'clock when I woke up, so I grabbed a cab that sided
[6:57] him seven. I went out to the arena in the nearby town of on
[7:00] Elbow. The five Bucks had a mate. I managed to get a seat
[7:02] a ring side and time to catch the end of the last prelimin where in
[7:09] one minute the program told me how was schedule for the main event against some
[7:12] local boy named Rafe Cummings. I've never heard of him, and I doubt
[7:16] if anybody outside of Tucson ever had. I understood why when he stepped into
[7:20] the ring, this kid looked like the rankest kind of amateur, strong,
[7:25] sure and in good condition, but comes in he almost took over his own
[7:29] size fifteen feet and it was no actor full and opponent either. How when
[7:33] he came in looked as good as ever. He gave me a quick glance
[7:36] of recognition. I'm sure he knew nothing about me except possibly my name at
[7:42] the oldening belly came out fast. All the old speed and timing were there
[7:45] and faint weave and flick out that light but punishing left, sing old pattern
[7:47] and saying, well wait a minute. Those quick left jams were only landing
[7:51] about one in four as though he touched comings only when the comes the ox
[7:57] having to walk into him, but because of his speed out took nothing but
[8:00] a few light ones on the body. He kept his face well out of
[8:01] reach. Oh yeah, his timing was perfect, but his aim was terrible.
[8:07] Every time he shot out his fist he was three four inches wide.
[8:09] It's what a funny thing happened at the end of the round when Al went
[8:13] back to his corner, and remember Raven only tapped him a few times on
[8:15] the body. When he went back to his corner and started to sit down,
[8:18] he almost missed the stool, would have if one of the seconds had
[8:20] named it under him funny. The second round got under weigh the same as
[8:26] the first owl. Was all speed, dodging, weaving, keeping his face
[8:28] out of the way. But again he wasn't hitting his march. And then
[8:33] it happened he missed Cummings. Why then practically ran into his glove, catching
[8:37] it hot on the cheek, and down he went. Why there wasn't enough
[8:41] steam behind Cummings glove to hurt it, But out took the counts he'd been
[8:46] hurt by that tap on the face. Then another thing. The second he
[8:48] was counted out, his handlers practically hauled him out of the ring and back
[8:52] to his dressing round. And believed me owl looked terrible, and his eyes
[8:54] had a strange, almost far away look, as though that little smack had
[8:58] not his Rainslow said, my seat was on the far side of the ring,
[9:01] but I elbowed my way through the crowd and back to the rower dressing
[9:05] rooms. In a hallway building at one end of the building. Al al
[9:09] Carnado, I told you on the way up the aisle, Doc, we
[9:13] don't need you the boys, all right, go on, Doc, beat
[9:16] it you hear me? Dot listen. This is Johnny Dollar, old fan
[9:20] of Al's from Hartford. I want to see him some other No, no,
[9:24] right away, come on, open up, I said some of the
[9:28] time. Don't you understand. We're pulling out of this burg and we ain't
[9:31] got time to stand around and talk. Now, look, buddy Malone's and
[9:33] name my mouths manager. Seeing when I say get out, I mean van
[9:37] moose. Now are you okay? Boy? This is Johnny Doller. Oh
[9:39] no, you duck brother? That sweet your walk? Hey yeah? Now
[9:50] good lord? Now what's the matter with you? Oh? Held, jolly
[9:54] yeah? Look at me? No, no, I mean straight at me
[9:56] here. Al all right, Jaddy, you're in bad shape. You should
[10:03] never have fought tonight. Oh that's all right. Where are your seconds?
[10:05] Your trainer, Ricky though, don't let nobody in to fight? Look out,
[10:11] can you get up off that table? Stand up and walk? Oh?
[10:13] Shore shoo, Jaddy, and come on, I'm taking you out of
[10:16] here day. Look. Look, we hide you, Ricky, He's up,
[10:20] He's got you. Bet I am Tello, Act two of Yours,
[10:41] Truly, Johnny Dollar. In just a moment. Each Monday through Friday evening,
[10:46] most of these same stations bring you the amins and Andy Music Hall variety,
[10:50] entertainment at its best, for top songs, informal visits with top stars,
[10:54] and for a never ending supply of fun. Turn your home into the
[10:58] Aminson Andy Music five nights a week now, Act two of Yours, Truly,
[11:03] Johnny Dollar and the Squared Circle Matter. When I came to the dressing
[11:15] room was dark and quiet. After carefully falling off the table where they'd left
[11:20] me, I groped my way to the light switch, stumbling instantly all the
[11:24] remains of the chair Ricky Malone had used off me. It was well after
[11:26] midnight, so I left by the dressing room window. The second I reached
[11:31] my hotel room and I put through a long distance call, hoping Paul Kendrick
[11:33] would be in home in bed. He was, Johnny Dollar and Paul,
[11:39] You're right, it'll be murder unless I can stop it. Hey, you
[11:43] awake? You mean El Coronado? What's happened? Johnny Plenty and listen.
[11:48] That boy is more than punch drunk. He's had a brain injury or some
[11:52] kind. I'll bet on it. That's when I was afraid. The tap
[11:54] on the face that had knocked him out to night wasn't enough to hurt a
[11:56] kitten, but a good solid blow would probably kill him. That's why protecting
[12:00] his face. But Ricky Maloney's making him keep on. Oh else, I
[12:03] just met that gentleman by the way. What he say? Did you question
[12:05] him? Before I could? He cracked me over the head with a chair.
[12:09] Where's he not? Oh? I don't know. What are you gonna
[12:11] do? See if the police can track them down. Malone said something about
[12:13] leaving town right away and keep after him. Did you read that policy carefully?
[12:18] You're kidding. I haven't had time. It's an annuity that much I
[12:20] saw beginning in three or four years. It'll pay all a nice little income
[12:24] of the rest of his life if he survives. But the beneficiary named,
[12:28] yes, Frankie Fourteina, who gets the full face value of the policy of
[12:31] al dies? Johnny, Yeah, I got a rundown on FOURTEENA. He
[12:35] said he was a boogieer one time. That was the least of his crimes.
[12:37] He has a record as long as your arm as I see it,
[12:39] he owns Al Coronado. Then you're probably thinking what I am. But Al
[12:46] hasn't been doing so well lately. He's taking a big drop in class.
[12:48] Isn't making the purses he used to? You know that? Yes, the
[12:52] ANBA keeps a complete record. So with this injury to his brain, the
[12:56] only way FOURTEENA can clean up on him is by seeing him dead. That's
[12:58] right. What about medical examinations before these fights? Ricky Malone could bribe his
[13:03] own mother, especially in some of the towns where Al has been fighting lately.
[13:07] That's possible, of course. Also, what you and I believe is
[13:09] wrong with Ali, he's one of the hardest things in the world to detect.
[13:13] Yeah, yeah, I must admit he looked great when he entered the
[13:15] ring. Okay, Paul One, things in our favor, either Al nor
[13:18] Ricky Malone knows who I am outside of being a fight fan, just so
[13:22] FOURTEENA doesn't learn different. Well, it is FOURTEENA by the way, I
[13:24] don't know, So Johnny, whatever you do, be careful. Expencer con
[13:33] Item nine three seventy for a couple of phone calls some breakfast in a taxi
[13:37] the police headquarters. I'll say this for the Champlan police when they go into
[13:41] action, they really get things done. Within less than two hours. Sergeant
[13:45] Danny Ruskin dug up all the information I want. Well, that dies into
[13:48] what Conrad I found out at the airport. Now that doesn't hurn. Thanks
[13:50] very much something, and I think it gives us the whole story. Johnny
[13:56] Alan his manager Ricky Malone, checked out of their hotel, the Raybury one
[14:00] o'clock this morning. Just the two of them ride. There was no third
[14:03] party by the name of fourteen or anything else, just the two of them.
[14:07] They caught the one forty plane for Oklahoma City and there they bought tickets
[14:11] Rodingham to Monterey, Mexico, Mexico. How soon can I get a plane
[14:16] going down there? I told you I got to save that guy's life,
[14:18] all right, Look in Monterey. Look up Sergeant Romilia Garcia, Main Homicide
[14:22] Division. You mentioned my name. He'll give you anything you want. Go
[14:24] ahead, Now, what about that plane? The Dilon plane connections turned out
[14:37] to be bad. The best time I could make was by way of out
[14:39] passing rightside Santa one hundred and twenty seven dollars including incidentals. I finally pulled
[14:45] in the Monterey shortly after eight pm. I parked my bag at the airport
[14:48] taxiing into town Adam eleven. I went straight to main headquarters of the Policia
[14:50] are Sagian Romdio Garcia was off Jordan and you had gone to the fights.
[14:56] I had them twelve four dollars American for a fast taxi ride at the Plaza
[14:58] del fist Cups or whatever they call it. Yeah, for rightem thirteen five
[15:03] bucks. I had the sergeant pages over the PA system. After two or
[15:07] three minutes, a short, stocky, important looking figure and police uniforms stood
[15:09] up to the door and you're Johnny Dollar And that's right, sergeant, how
[15:13] are you Americanos? Now? What is so important? I'm goost leave the
[15:18] assl and fights to talk with you. Huh the possible murder of an American
[15:20] fighter right here in your own ring. So what is that to be excited
[15:24] about something that happens all the time. Is because the Mexican fighter is more
[15:30] better than the Americano fighter. So if that is all it is. Pultimately,
[15:33] Sergeant Danny Ruskin at the job Donny. Why do you not say so
[15:39] at the beginning? Well, you didn't give me much of a chance.
[15:41] I is in my good friend, Sergeant Danny. This is too long ifc
[15:45] here? Yeah, well what still in man, Sergeant Danny? When I
[15:48] have trouble with one of our Mexican nationals who escape across the border and go
[15:52] all the way to Missouri Joplin, is Sergeant Danny? Who? But you
[15:56] have a problem man? Yeah? A fighter name of alcohol, not a
[16:00] Coronado. Oh but of course tomorrow night he is fighting here and he will
[16:06] lose. Why do you say that? Come look here and the what you
[16:11] call a billboard a picture of the man he is to fight. So el
[16:15] toro negro. It sounds more like the name of a ball in him.
[16:19] Oh see big man? Is he not? There's this picture realm two hundred
[16:26] and forty pounds in you. But now Corona the only weighs in a one
[16:29] eighty one. See el too, big man is singing a dollar. He
[16:33] is a killer, our best three men. He's knocked out of the ring,
[16:37] but nobody heard, seems so. No wonder you worried, Sagan,
[16:41] unless you when I can stop at that won't be a fight tomorrow night.
[16:45] It'll be a premeditated, cold blooded killing. Oh so I showed Garcia my
[16:56] potentials, then told him what I knew and what I suspected I have proof
[17:00] of. They say, or to start what you call an international situation.
[17:04] You are not now in your own country, you know. Still he agreed
[17:10] to cooperate. First thing, of course, was to locate out and this
[17:12] manager in this city of nearly two hundred thousand. That could be pretty rough,
[17:17] but he said he tried. He drove me by the airport to pick
[17:19] up my bag into a hotel and there is the bell hop unlocked the door
[17:22] of my room. I got a wheel break the next door down the hall
[17:26] open there? Hey kid, how'd you like the Greg meph for glass and
[17:30] warm milk? Now al Coronado? Oh hi, hey boy, just putting
[17:36] my bags inside and leaves the door open. He yeah, are you alone?
[17:41] Sure? Hey? You? Johnny? At you? Yeah, that's
[17:47] right, Johnny, And I want to talk to you. I used to
[17:48] see you excide all the time up and hard for that. You saw me
[17:52] and Jaffain too, Only you don't remember where's Ricky Malone? Your manager?
[17:59] Oh? He says, how to go meet somebody. He's always going out.
[18:03] Look al, I'm an insurance investigator. Oh oh, I got some
[18:08] as shirts. Yeah, one more fight than somebody's gonna collect it. Uh
[18:12] No, Johnny, that's my retiring money. The only one who'll retire on
[18:18] it is Frankie Fourteina. Hey, Frankie, he's my owner. You know,
[18:25] Hey, who takes all the aspin around here? Me? I get
[18:30] a lot of headaches all the time. But maybe that's why I am been
[18:33] hitting so good lately. Yeah, here, can's this bottle? Hey?
[18:40] Uh now, look what you did? No, no, well you look
[18:42] what you did. You missed that bottle by three inches for the same reason
[18:48] you haven't been hitting. Well, why you have these headaches. I'll give
[18:52] it to you straight. You've had a brain injury. Out One good wallop
[18:56] on that headle, kid, and that's just what Ricky and fourteen want.
[19:00] No, Ricky always says to keep my head protected. So you must be
[19:04] wrong, am I? Whoa? Ricky's good to me? Why you Numbskully's
[19:08] trying to get you killed? Johnny, you are wrong. You know the
[19:12] man you're up against tomorrow night, Well I know his name. Well,
[19:17] he's the one schedule to finish you off good. I don't believe that.
[19:22] And listen, you're gonna believe it now? Was it to here? Who
[19:27] are you gonna call? Hello? This is an emergency. Get me,
[19:30] Sergeant Romano. You gotta see at Central Police Headquarters, the cops, that's
[19:33] right, al and a doctor. Uh No, Ricky says, to stay
[19:37] away from doctors. All they do. All they do is stop you from
[19:40] ever fighting again. And I would make you worth just fifty thousand dollars less
[19:44] to Frankie. Sergeant Johnny Dollar. I found out hotel room right next to
[19:48] mine, room nine to fifteen. Bring a doctor, a brain specialist if
[19:51] you can, even if you have to drag him out of bed. Oh.
[19:53] Look, we'll fight the international situation when we come to it. You
[19:56] get a doctor up here, you hang up or I'll blow your head off.
[20:03] Well, mister FOURTEENA I first, kim Ricky Sure, boys East quan
[20:11] Ah. I hate to shoot an an armed man, Dollar, but if
[20:15] you make one phony move so you know who I am. Ricky here may
[20:19] be stupid in some ways, but he had sense enough to call me from
[20:22] Joplin after you broke in on him there finding out what you're up to.
[20:26] Wasn't difficult. Finding out what you're up to was very toughy the FOURTEENA.
[20:30] But it's all over, not for me, Dollar, That's where you're wrong.
[20:33] That phone call I made was to the police, know, to central
[20:37] headquarters. That's over three miles from here. By the time your sergeant finds
[20:40] a doctor and gets here, you will be dead and I will be gone.
[20:42] Have you forgotten that you have a bordered across fourteen times? Stupid Frankie
[20:48] Fourteina has never been here, has never been even in Mexico because my tourist
[20:52] god reads Charles Edward Smith. Since the next plane leaves for the States in
[20:56] about twenty minutes, Ricky, Yeah, boys, I think mister Dollar had
[21:02] better have an accident fall out of the window perhaps, And I wait a
[21:07] minute, I mean listen to me alone. I had two reasons for coming
[21:11] down here, to see if you were right about Dollar, and to make
[21:14] sure of that fight tomorrow. You've been stalling with al. You've taken too
[21:18] long. The heat is on up north. I need the dough. I
[21:22] told you boys that El Toro will do it. Tomuch. I'll shut up
[21:25] and look if you take care of Dollar what about me. Maybe you can
[21:30] get back to the States, but me with Dollar laying dead here, and
[21:33] if al Al won't talk, you won't either. Thank you. Dollar has
[21:40] given us a perfect setup. He came here to Al's room, you found
[21:42] him here, You had a fight. Dollar ends up in the street below.
[21:48] But what happens to me? And I always taken care of you in
[21:51] the past when you were working for me, you know what will happen if
[21:55] you ever try to cross it. No, all right, all right,
[21:57] I have contacts down here. I have lawyers, good ones. It's going
[22:02] to be self defense, pure and simple, like what if el I told
[22:06] you before. Ricky, you've taken too long with him. While I hold
[22:11] this gun, You're going to take care of Al two the way you should
[22:14] have a long long time ago in his fights. No, listen to me,
[22:18] frank you listen. You do this whole thing just as deep as I
[22:22] have, and deeper because you're the one who's kept out fighting. You've paid
[22:25] off all those phony medicals. You set him up for this El Toro.
[22:27] Tomorrow night, you'll do it, Ricky. No, then I'll use the
[22:33] gun and all three of your Frankie, am I. It will still look
[22:37] like a fight between you and Ricky. I'll just happen to get hit accidentally
[22:42] by the gun that will be found beside your body. Boss, Boss,
[22:47] I'll do it. You bet. You will do anything you say if you
[22:52] just help me get out of it. Okay, Okay, go ahead.
[22:59] Dollar is first, brother. If you think it's gonna be easy, either
[23:02] the window or this gun. Dollar, So far as you're concerned, I
[23:04] don't care which go on, Ricky. Just remember your own life depends on
[23:10] it, you bet, Jerdy? Will you the window off? Ricky?
[23:17] The window? I said, remember your life, Ricky? All right?
[23:29] Fourteen So you have got a gun? Oh yeah, Jerry, I I
[23:37] hit him season your dollar with one very fine clean left hook. Well,
[23:42] fourteen was watching you and the unfortunate Ricky. Yeah, you got here a
[23:48] little late, Garcie, you see, But tell mesn you are what makes
[23:52] you think this al Coronado has lost his punch expense account Item thirteen, one
[24:02] hundred dollars legal expense, mainly a deposition for a lawyer to take the court
[24:06] just down. Garcia got me on a having to stay a Monterey for a
[24:07] hearing. I will never know what he did, Es Brown. Coronado.
[24:11] I suggest the company makes some adjustment in his policy that will permit paying his
[24:15] annuities immediately. And why not? The company should have investigated more thoroughly before
[24:19] issuing this policy anyway, And if it doesn't show a little heart, but
[24:23] I'm sure it will. Adam fourteen two hundred and twenty four to fifty hotel
[24:27] and incidentals and transportation back to Hartred expense account total four ninety one twenty Yours
[24:33] truly, Johnny Dollar. Now here is our star to tell you about next
[24:49] week's story. Next week, a fast trip to the West Coast to an
[24:52] impossible case involving an impossible man. Join us, won't you? Yours truly,
[25:03] Yours truly Johnny Dollar, is starring Bob Bailey. Originates in Hollywood.
[25:07] It is produced and directed by Jack Johnstone, who also wrote tonight's story.
[25:11] Heard in our cast were Harry Bartel, Herbellus, Victor Perrin, Jack Krusian,
[25:15] Les Tremaine, and Lawrence Dobkin. Musical supervision is by Amerigo Marino.
[25:21] Be sure to join us next week, same time in station or another exciting
[25:25] story of Yours truly, Johnny Dollar. Stay tuned for five minutes of CBS
[25:30] News, to be followed over most of these same stations by the FBI.
[25:33] In Peace and War, Dan Cumberly speaking, welcome back, Well, happy
[26:51] mean to find the guy that you're looking for in the same hotel you're staying
[26:56] in. That ends to be one of those things that you have to when
[27:00] you only have twenty five minutes to tell your story. But I will say
[27:03] Johnstone's definitely showing some improvement. While Johnstone at times has indulged in having supersonic
[27:11] police officers, he makes things far more believable here with Martinez. While Martina's
[27:17] got there very quickly, it wasn't impossible, after all. It's the way
[27:22] Johnny had to hang up quickly. Probably include martinaz in that something was going
[27:27] on and he wasn't going to bother getting a doctor. He was going to
[27:32] make sure that Johnny Dollar didn't need a corner. Well, now we turn
[27:37] to our listener comments and feedback, and William emails in and he writes,
[27:45] well, I'm sad to see the end of the serialized format of Johnny Dollar
[27:49] and appreciate many of the stories presented Therein I will say the format suffered from
[27:53] one flaw that got annoyed the device of Johnny retelling the events of the previous
[27:59] episodes other characters like police lieutenants. It seems a lot of time was spent
[28:03] every day rehashing the plot in order to catch the audience up. By comparison,
[28:08] the serialized OTR, Superman shows seem to do a better job of quickly
[28:12] recapping previous episodes without getting too bogged down in details, and they were able
[28:18] to recap through narration instead of the device of characters reciting what they already knew.
[28:23] To be fair, maybe Superman's plots weren't as complicated as Johnny dollars well.
[28:27] I will say that I have actually heard quite a few episodes of Superman
[28:33] where Clark Kent will sit down and will actually tell characters what they said,
[28:37] Chief you yourself said, really just to remind the audience of what the chief
[28:44] said. You told you know, you said this, and we decided this,
[28:48] you know. So there would be those sort of contrivances. That is
[28:52] one of the trade offs with serialized stories. I will say that sometimes Johnny
[29:00] A. Dollar managed to do it cleverly by not recapping the plot to someone
[29:07] who already knew, you know. For example, a new police lieutenant.
[29:11] Well, it all started in New Orleans, and I tended to think they
[29:17] were overall a little bit more clever in how they did it. Beginning any
[29:21] story with two or three minutes of backstory can also be a challenge too,
[29:26] particularly told by a narrator. There were a few times where I did find
[29:30] myself shaking my head, but still I prefer the theorialized format and I'll definitely
[29:37] missed those because they provided so much more complex stories. But thanks so much
[29:41] for the email, Liiam Philip, comments on Facebook and joining the shows,
[29:47] especially yours tweely Johnny Dollar. Finally, we have a new review of the
[29:52] app over on Amazon. Susan writes the best old timer radio podcast available bar
[30:00] none. Why is this one the best? There are a number of reasons,
[30:04] but it all starts with the host, Adam Graham. He's taking the
[30:07] time not only in selecting the series to run, but he's also researched the
[30:11] backgrounds of the shows and the stars and presents them like an old friend talking
[30:15] to you about a subject that he truly loves. Many others might play the
[30:18] show, but do they play them in the order they first aired? Adam
[30:21] does do the others clean up the old recordings and make them sound good for
[30:26] seventy year old records. Adam does try this podcast. If you love old
[30:30] time radio detectives or film more as much as I do, this will become
[30:33] the podcast that you will look forward to every day. Well, thanks so
[30:37] much for the comments, Susan. I have to say that on the cleaning
[30:41] up, any improvement of the quality of the recordings from what I have found
[30:47] online, we can thank Andrew Ryns at the Old Time Radio Western Show at
[30:53] Otrwesterns dot com. All right, well, thanks much for all your comments
[31:00] and feedback. We will be back with you tomorrow for Police Headquarters and then

[31:11] the meantime, send your comments to Box thirteen at Great Detectors dot net,
