The Transfemicide of Brianna Ghey England, 2023: Brianna Ghey, a 16 year old school girl was lured out of her home and to a park, where she became the victim of a violent attack, planned by a girl who she thought was her friend. But this wasn’t the first time this friend tried to take Brianna’s life… Her name was Scarlett Jenkinson and devastatingly, this time Scarlett’s plan worked. Brianna would not survive her injuries and tragically passed away at the scene. Scarlett had enlisted the help of Eddie Ratcliffe, an unpopular boy with a hateful streak. Together they’d devised an evil murder plot for Brianna. Their whatsapp messages revealed a horrifying web of evidence. Devised kill lists, dark web obsessions and uncensored, unforgivable homophobic and transphobic messages. Then, to know when to begin their attack on Brianna, they used the code word ‘GAY’. But despite all this, Brianna’s murder has still not been classed as a hate crime. And the trigger for Brianna’s murder in the first place? Scarlett was jealous, because Brianna was deemed prettier than her, and Biranna was trans. [0:00] Hello and welcome to Outlaw Podcast.
[0:02] I'm Ellen O'Neill, and in today's episode we're in
[0:05] Cheshire, England in 2023 where a 16 year old schoolgirl named
[0:10] Brianna Jai stepped off a bus to go and meet some friends, or at
[0:14] least people that she thought were her friends because
[0:17] unbeknownst to Brianna, she was walking into a trap that day.
[0:22] These people were not her friends.
[0:24] In fact, they had come armed with a literal step by step
[0:29] murder plot that they had written out, and it had
[0:33] Brianna's name at the very top of it.
[0:41] In late 2022, Brianna Jai was sitting at her desk when she
[0:45] spotted the New Girl entering the class.
[0:48] Brianna kept her head down not to make eye contact because
[0:51] honestly, the rumours about this New Girl in school were crazy.
[0:55] Apparently, she had been moved to Brianna's school because she
[0:58] had poisoned a kid at her last school.
[1:02] Rumours were swirling around that this girl was dangerous.
[1:06] She does blood rituals, animal sacrifices.
[1:09] Brianna planned to stay well away from this girl, but then
[1:14] she noticed that no one else was talking to her either.
[1:17] The New Girl was sat all alone and Brianna felt really sorry
[1:22] for her because Brianna herself knew how it felt to be lonely
[1:27] and left out. So she leant across the desk and
[1:29] told this New Girl. I like your eyeliner.
[1:33] But. Soon after just this one act of
[1:35] kindness, Brianna would find herself at the centre of this
[1:40] girl's dark and dangerous obsession.
[1:43] And it all began in a town in the north of England called
[1:46] Warrington, which is where today's case takes place.
[1:49] Now, before we continue with this case, I just want to warn
[1:52] you this is a really, really heavy one.
[1:55] We're going to be covering a lot of sensitive topics including
[1:58] transphobia, homophobia, rape, eating disorders, self harm,
[2:03] drugs, violence and murder. Viewer discretion is always
[2:07] advised. Brianna Jai was born on the 7th
[2:10] of November 2006 in Warrington, England.
[2:13] She was the younger of two daughters to her parents, Esther
[2:16] and Peter. It's important to note now that
[2:19] Brianna was assigned male at birth and lived as one during
[2:23] her childhood until around the age of 14.
[2:26] So, I mean, we're only going to be referring to her as Brianna
[2:30] today, but I thought that was important to let you know, in
[2:33] the beginning, when Brianna was only two months old, her parents
[2:36] split up. And so she and her older sister
[2:38] Alicia, who I believe was about a year older than Brianna, both
[2:42] of them grew up living with just that mom.
[2:45] And I want to take a little moment to talk about what kind
[2:47] of kid Brianna was because all of the descriptions we read
[2:50] about her were just so adorable. As a toddler, this little girl
[2:54] lived to make everyone around her smile and laugh.
[2:58] She was always pulling funny faces, doing silly little dances
[3:01] to get a reaction out of people. She was so energetic and
[3:05] apparently she had this really infectious laugh.
[3:08] It was hard to stay down if baby Brianna was around.
[3:11] She was a super affectionate kid as well.
[3:13] She was so full of love. She was always hugging everyone,
[3:17] even like the doctor when she said goodbye after a routine
[3:20] checkup, she would give him a hug as she left.
[3:23] How cute is that? Brianna also completely idolized
[3:26] her older sister Alicia. She wanted to do everything that
[3:30] she saw her older sister doing. And so at nine years old,
[3:33] Brianna started gymnastics classes.
[3:35] Very quickly, it was apparent that Brianna had a natural
[3:38] talent for gymnastics. It wasn't long before she was
[3:41] entering competitions, winning medals, which she just loved
[3:45] because, as her family always says, from a young age, Brianna
[3:49] loved the limelight. Her mom said that like whenever
[3:52] they would go food shopping to Tesco, Brianna would just start
[3:55] pulling out flips and cartwheels down the aisles in front of all
[3:59] the shoppers and she'd want to see people's reactions.
[4:02] This. This girl was a natural
[4:04] performer, she loved to entertain and this would
[4:07] continue into her teenage years where she joined Birchwood
[4:11] Community High School. There she would be known for
[4:14] being the friendly one, the funny one, until 2020 hit.
[4:18] Halfway into secondary school aged 14, Brianna's life and her
[4:23] fun, outgoing personality would all be derailed.
[4:27] And that was when the pandemic hit.
[4:30] Schools closed, life went into lockdown.
[4:32] And this way of life, this new way of living would soon take a
[4:37] major toll on Brianna Jai. Her mum was a key worker at the
[4:40] time, so that meant she needed to be out doing her job
[4:44] throughout the lockdown. And so 14 year old Brianna was
[4:47] left without structure. She was left to her own devices
[4:51] and just like everyone else, she began living online.
[4:56] TikTok, Instagram, Twitter, you name it, Brianna was active on
[4:59] it. She was consuming loads of
[5:02] different content. A lot of it was harmless, but
[5:05] soon she landed in dangerous territory.
[5:08] Brianna had stumbled into the world of pro anorexia and she
[5:12] began following accounts that promoted restrictive eating and
[5:16] self harm. And before long, she began
[5:19] limiting her foods and self harm.
[5:21] She had been struggling with her mental health for a little while
[5:24] at this point, but it was only getting worse and worse as the
[5:27] weeks went by. Her eating disorder order and
[5:30] her anxiety grew so severe that she no longer left the house.
[5:35] She became agoraphobic. But despite Brianna being
[5:38] trapped in this loop of really bad mental health, which was
[5:42] only further fueled by harmful content online, Brianna's own
[5:46] TikTok page, however, would soon become a platform for safety and
[5:51] acceptance. Because in 2020, Brianna would
[5:55] tell her sister Alicia, and then her mum Esther that she wasn't
[6:00] the boy that they were looking at.
[6:02] This wasn't the right body that she was in.
[6:05] She was a girl. And so in 2020, at the age of
[6:08] 14, Brianna began officially living as a girl.
[6:12] It didn't come as a huge surprise to those closest to her
[6:15] honestly, and thankfully her transition was fully supported
[6:19] by her friends and her family, even her dad who she had a bit
[6:22] of an on and off relationship with over the years.
[6:25] He was also doing his best to support Brianna and it was
[6:28] around this time that Brianna sat down with her mum and her
[6:31] sister to come up with her girl name.
[6:34] Brianna's first choice wasn't actually Brianna.
[6:36] Originally she wanted to be Brittany, but her mum and her
[6:39] sister talked her out of it. They said it didn't really suit
[6:42] her and they just tweaked it a little bit to make Brianna,
[6:45] Which they all felt was a really good fit.
[6:47] And so Brianna Jai she was. So when school opened up again
[6:51] in 2021, she went back as Brianna wearing the girls
[6:55] uniform. And at this point, according to
[6:57] her friends, Brianna's TikTok was low key blowing up.
[7:00] She had like 180 K followers. And when she came back to
[7:04] school, she would keep trying to film this content on her break
[7:08] and on her lunch. But the teachers caught her and
[7:10] they told her off. You're not allowed to film in
[7:12] school. It was the same at my school
[7:13] too. And so Brianna would sneeze,
[7:15] sneak off to the bathrooms and film her Tik Toks there instead.
[7:19] And honestly, you can totally see how she managed to build up
[7:22] such a big following. Brianna was strikingly
[7:26] beautiful. Of course, there was so much
[7:27] more to her online presence than just her appearance, and we will
[7:30] get to that in a second. But she had that kind of unique
[7:34] look that would stop you in your tracks mid scroll.
[7:37] She was a redhead. She wore it either in like a
[7:40] short cropped straight Bob or she would.
[7:43] Layer in these really long thick.
[7:45] Extensions. She wore round glasses and
[7:49] filled her eyebrows in really straight and defined, and her
[7:53] smile was so big and beautiful. It lit up all the way through
[7:57] her eyes. Most of the photos I've seen of
[7:59] Brianna, she's almost always wearing a huge smile.
[8:02] But on top of that, the way that she communicated with her online
[8:07] platform would touch so many people's lives.
[8:11] She made a name for herself on TikTok as a person that other
[8:14] people could go. To.
[8:15] For support, especially when it comes to being transgender.
[8:18] She supported other people through their transitions, she
[8:22] gave advice, and she was always there to listen to, to just be a
[8:25] shoulder to to cry on, to lean on.
[8:28] But beneath all of this, Brianna was still having a very
[8:31] difficult time with her own mental health.
[8:34] She was struggling to leave her bedroom, which to Brianna was
[8:37] this peaceful pink sanctuary from the world.
[8:41] But her mum was getting very worried at how Brianna would
[8:44] lock herself away for hours and hours every day.
[8:47] Since coming out of lockdown and going back to school, Brianna
[8:51] hadn't been coping. Her anxiety had become
[8:55] debilitating and so had her eating disorder.
[8:58] In 2022, she was actually hospitalized for a period with
[9:01] anorexia. And it was during all this time
[9:04] as well that Brianna's neurodivergence became really
[9:07] clear. She hadn't just been struggling
[9:10] at home, she'd also been having a really tough time in school as
[9:13] well. She found it really difficult to
[9:15] stay on top of things and to keep her focus.
[9:18] Communicating with teachers and her peers was difficult and
[9:22] overwhelming for her. It was realized that Brianna had
[9:25] both autism and ADHD. Obviously everyone experiences
[9:29] these things very differently, but quite a common trait is
[9:33] finding it hard to regulate emotions and behavior.
[9:37] Brianna especially found this difficult.
[9:39] She was experiencing a. Lot.
[9:42] Of big emotions that she felt powerless to control or to
[9:46] handle. And this led to reactive
[9:49] outbursts both at home and in school.
[9:52] And the ones in school were becoming quite an issue at this
[9:55] point. Brianna was getting detentions
[9:57] and even suspensions. And that's where they tell you
[10:00] to like, take a couple of days off school to like, sort your
[10:03] behaviour out and then you're allowed to come back.
[10:05] But it was now getting to a point where suspensions weren't
[10:07] enough. The school were looking at the
[10:09] possibility of a complete expulsion.
[10:13] She would be kicked out. So something needed to change.
[10:16] Brianna needed to be given the time, the space, the resources
[10:21] to learn how to navigate life with autism and ADHD now that
[10:24] they knew what it was. Luckily, her school were quite
[10:27] helpful with this. They worked with Brianna's mom
[10:29] to figure out a way to best help her.
[10:31] Her timetable at school was adjusted to a part time schedule
[10:35] and she did her lessons in the pastoral unit, which is a more
[10:39] isolated part of the school that's quieter.
[10:42] It gives students a less overwhelming experience.
[10:45] And it was in that pastoral unit in October 2022 where 15 year
[10:50] old Brianna would meet Scarlett Jenkinson, a girl who would soon
[10:55] grow a deluded, evil and jealous obsession for Brianna.
[11:00] And it all started when Brianna complimented her eyeliner.
[11:03] Scarlett Jenkinson was also 15 years old and as we mentioned
[11:07] earlier, she was the New Girl in school.
[11:09] She had recently moved from a neighboring school called
[11:12] Culture Thai just two months prior.
[11:15] At this old school, Scarlett had been caught giving cannabis
[11:19] sweets edibles to younger kids, saying that they were just
[11:23] normal sweets. She didn't tell them what was in
[11:24] it. She was spiking kids younger
[11:27] than her as well. One of the kids that got.
[11:29] Really ill from this was a 13 year old.
[11:32] Lucky for Scarlett she was given a second chance because that is
[11:36] enough to be completely kicked out of school that could derail
[11:39] your whole like childhood and education.
[11:43] Lucky for Scarlett she was given a second chance, instead of
[11:46] being expelled she could be move schools and so that was when she
[11:50] was transferred last minute to Birchwood Community where
[11:53] Brianna was and she would do her final year of schooling there.
[11:57] Both Scarlett and Brianna were now in year 11 and they were
[12:00] gearing up to take their GCS ES which is EU KS end of high
[12:03] school qualification. But there had been a huge lack
[12:07] of communication between the schools when Scarlett moved over
[12:10] Birchwood had the new school had only been told that Scarlett had
[12:15] been caught with edibles in her possession, not that she had
[12:19] been lying to younger kids and drugging them.
[12:22] Which is mad. Actually.
[12:24] Really dangerous that the new school couldn't properly
[12:27] anticipate what kind of student Scarlett might be if some of her
[12:31] history had been omitted when she was sent there.
[12:34] And because of the last minute transfer, they couldn't fit all
[12:37] of Scarlett's subjects into her timetable, so she would have to
[12:41] spend 3 hours a week doing independent study in the same
[12:45] pastoral unit that Brianna also had her lessons in.
[12:48] Now, at her old school, Scarlett was thought of as a weirdo among
[12:53] her peers. And actually, she liked that.
[12:56] She liked being the misfit, the the messed up weird girl.
[13:01] She would always talk about serial killers.
[13:03] And I mean, this is not the audience to say that that's
[13:06] weird in front of, is it? But she also had a real thing
[13:09] about gouging people's eyes out. She had a real thing about
[13:13] eyeballs, apparently. And she would always fantasy
[13:15] size about what it would feel like to gouge someones eyes out.
[13:18] Weird as fuck. This girl's reputation kind of
[13:21] preceded her. There were rumors about Scarlet
[13:23] circling through this new school and she was really struggling to
[13:27] make friends because of it. Apart from when it came to
[13:31] Brianna Jai, who was the only person to initiate a friendship
[13:35] with her. The two of them became close
[13:37] very quickly actually. They would hang out after
[13:39] school, they would go shopping together or go to McDonald's.
[13:43] They would just hang out like teenagers are supposed to and
[13:46] Brianna's mom was. Pleased.
[13:48] For her, that her daughter was getting out of her bedroom, she
[13:51] was being social, she was making real life friends.
[13:55] I mean, Brianna did have a lot of friends, but the majority of
[13:58] them were online. People that she'd met through
[14:01] fandoms and forums throughout the pandemic.
[14:04] Of course, this is a super. Popular thing for teeny boppers
[14:06] these days, especially the pandemic generation.
[14:09] It's quite typical now for teens to have entire friendship groups
[14:13] that were formed online, and that's especially true for
[14:17] people in more isolated communities like the trans
[14:20] community. Brianna wanted other trans
[14:23] friends who could relate to her on a level that no one else
[14:25] could, but the likelihood of stumbling into another trans
[14:29] girl at. School or down the street was
[14:31] slim to none and so Brianna connected with people online,
[14:35] which is where she first met her best friend Amelia, who was also
[14:39] a trans girl. Brianna and Amelia became so
[14:43] close, so so close. They were like a little duo.
[14:46] They would play Minecraft together almost every single
[14:49] day. They would FaceTime for.
[14:51] Hours every night planning their futures alongside one another.
[14:56] They dreamed of moving out together and becoming roommates.
[14:59] 1 day. They said that they would get
[15:01] all of their surgeries at the same time so that they could go
[15:04] through this process together. They were two best friends that
[15:08] were becoming more and more like sisters every day.
[15:10] But they hadn't met in person yet because Amelia lived all the
[15:15] way in Scotland, which was hours away from where Brianna was
[15:18] living. So until then, Brianna could
[15:21] really do with a real life friend like Scarlett to hang out
[15:25] with. Or at least that's what everyone
[15:27] thought at first. Now, one day.
[15:30] After school, Scarlett opened up WhatsApp on her phone and
[15:34] messaged a contact that she had served as Tesco John Wick.
[15:37] Tesco, John Wick's real name was.
[15:39] Eddie Ratcliffe. It was a friend from her old
[15:42] school. She called him that because she
[15:44] thought that he looked like a budget version of John Wick.
[15:47] Eddie and Scarlett had met when they were about 12 or 13 years
[15:51] old at her old school. They were loose friends who
[15:55] would hang out, you know, every now and then.
[15:58] But since leaving her old school, Eddie was one of the
[16:00] very few people that kept in touch with Scarlett.
[16:04] Eddie Ratcliffe was an ex amateur MMA champion so.
[16:08] The boy can. Fight and he was known for being
[16:11] clever in school too, but socially he was not so great.
[16:17] Lately Eddie had been asking Scarlett specifically for girl
[16:21] advice because in his own words, he was socially inept.
[16:25] He had always struggled to make and keep friends and recently.
[16:29] There was this. At school that he had a crush on
[16:31] but he couldn't pluck up the courage to talk to her.
[16:33] So he would go to Scarlet for advice on how to talk to this
[16:36] girl and he would say things like well what if she replies,
[16:39] what do I do? I mean, surely that's the goal,
[16:42] right? Anyways, Scarlett in comparison
[16:45] didn't struggle at all socially with flirting or dating.
[16:49] She had a boyfriend who she would go to the.
[16:51] Park with She would call and text him throughout the day, but
[16:55] he didn't know the half of it because Scarlett never showed
[16:59] her boyfriend the same kind of darkness that she showed Eddie
[17:04] Radcliffe. On the 5th of December 2022,
[17:07] Scarlett sent Eddie a screenshot of an advert that for a red room
[17:13] on the dark web now. For those of you that are
[17:15] unfamiliar, Red Rooms on the Dark Web live stream an
[17:19] unwilling victim being tortured and even murdered.
[17:24] They are live. Murder shows that only those in
[17:27] the know on the dark web can access.
[17:31] Now, some people that have never seen a red room with their own
[17:34] two eyes say that it's all just an urban legend.
[17:37] It's just a dark web urban legend.
[17:39] It's a it's a sensing, additionalized story that people
[17:42] like to spread, but other people would say that those people just
[17:45] don't know where to look and that Red Rooms are very real.
[17:48] Scarlett sent Eddie this screenshot of a Red Room advert
[17:52] and captioned it. I love watching torture vids,
[17:56] real ones on the dark web. I've liked stuff like this for a
[17:59] while. I'm just happy because I've
[18:00] finally found a. Good Red Room and 10 days later
[18:04] Scarlett would send Eddie a message that would be the
[18:07] catalyst of this whole entire hellish kid case that we're
[18:11] discussing today. On the 15th of December 2022.
[18:15] Scarlett typed. I'm obsessed over someone I know
[18:19] but I don't have feelings for them.
[18:21] She's called Brianna, I don't know how to explain.
[18:24] Also she has a Dick lol. Minutes later, Scarlett's phone
[18:28] vibrated with a reply it read. Is it a fem boy or AT slur?
[18:33] Obviously Eddie didn't censor that word the way that I just
[18:36] did. And Eddie's.
[18:38] Extreme transphobia to not even acknowledge Brianna as human,
[18:42] let alone a girl, is going to be a constant with him throughout.
[18:47] And while I know that some people do genuinely choose to go
[18:49] by it pronouns, Brianna had never asked for that.
[18:53] She only ever wanted to go by she her Eddie was using it
[18:57] solely to degrade and dehumanize her.
[19:00] By the new year in 2023, Scarlets obsession was beginning
[19:05] to look almost like a crush. Honestly, when she admitted to
[19:09] Eddie that Brianna makes her nervous, Eddie had texted her
[19:12] saying. Tell me how you feel when you
[19:14] interact with it, Scarlett said. Well, I get nervous and stuff,
[19:18] so Eddie tells her. I don't think you're necessarily
[19:21] in love. I think you're intrigued by its
[19:24] unnatural nature. It's so horrifically vile.
[19:28] The language that Eddie specifically uses around
[19:31] Brianna. It breaks my fucking heart, man.
[19:34] But it's this moment that I really need you to listen
[19:36] closely to. When Scarlett messaged Eddie
[19:38] saying I think Brianna's prettier than me, to which he
[19:42] replied I mean prettier than you, but it's a boss.
[19:46] And with that, Scarlett's complex obsession with Brianna
[19:51] seemed to narrow into pure jealousy and bitterness.
[19:55] The idea that boys think that. Brianna is prettier than her had
[20:00] made Brianna a target for Scarlett.
[20:03] 'S. Insidious attacks.
[20:05] Now one thing that I haven't told you yet is that over the
[20:08] last few months that Scarlett had been befriending Brianna,
[20:12] she had also been planning to become a real, real life serial
[20:17] killer, just like all the ones that she openly admired.
[20:21] And this isn't hyperbole, this isn't exaggeration.
[20:24] Scala and Eddie had genuinely been discussing the idea of
[20:28] committing murders together, murders as well multiple, for
[20:32] about 3 or 4 months now. They had been whatsapping about
[20:35] this since October when Scala actually joined Brianna's
[20:39] school. Now, as far as we know, Brianna
[20:42] hadn't always been in mind to be a target Scala.
[20:45] Paula and Eddie had discussed a few other names over the months,
[20:48] usually other kids from their schools that they hated for one
[20:52] reason or another. It was a.
[20:54] Growing list of names of potential victims, and after
[20:58] that conversation that confirmed to Scarlett that Brianna was
[21:01] prettier than her, Brianna's name had made it onto their hit
[21:05] list. The other names on Scarlett and
[21:08] Eddie's list have obviously never been released to the
[21:11] public. All these other kids are
[21:12] referred to in the media and in these reports just as Boy E or
[21:16] Boy M etcetera. One of these boys was a lad that
[21:21] Scarlett hated. And one day she texted Eddie
[21:24] saying so I need help killing someone, it's his fault if I get
[21:28] expelled and I really hate him. So Eddie asked what did he do
[21:33] and Scarlett said he told the teacher about me taking pills
[21:36] and. Stuff.
[21:37] Those pills were LSD by the way. He's a Dick to me.
[21:40] He deserves to die. I want your help to fuck with
[21:43] his brain and slit his throat. She's being deadly serious.
[21:48] Like I I feel the need to pause during this because it sounds so
[21:53] sensational like it's come from a horror movie.
[21:55] This is a real. 15 year old girl and the way that she is thinking
[22:00] about her problems like this guy pissed me off.
[22:03] I need help to literally murder him to take his life.
[22:07] That's mad. So anyway, she says all of this
[22:10] to Eddie like I need help, I want to fuck with his mind, I
[22:13] want to slit his throat. And then Eddie replied saying
[22:16] I'll go and search Chinese torture then.
[22:18] And he did. He.
[22:20] Spent the rest of that evening researching 20 of the slowest
[22:24] torture methods. It's just so insane to me that
[22:27] their brains go to murder and torture so quickly and easily
[22:32] like that is the first and only option to deal with their
[22:35] teenage problems. And remember how I said that
[22:37] Scarlett had been helping Eddie out with talking to this girl
[22:40] that he had a crush on? Well, another student that was
[22:43] on their kill list was actually a boy that Eddie thought was
[22:47] stealing his girl away from him. Scarlett told Eddie.
[22:51] Just ask me to do it and I'll do it.
[22:52] I'll try to kill him. I'll wear a mask, use a voice
[22:55] changer and keep him away from. Eddie replied so sadistically,
[23:00] saying I'm going to let you decide what to do with him.
[23:03] If you kill him, I'd like you to do it how you see fit.
[23:07] Cut out his heart, cook it and feed it to your dog.
[23:11] Jesus Christ. Anyway, these people that they'd
[23:15] spoken about were lowered down on the hit list.
[23:18] At the very top of their list was a boy that they had picked
[23:21] out, mainly because Scarlett thought that he would just be
[23:24] the easiest target for a first kill, so they really weren't.
[23:27] Were actually just doing it for the sake of it, just to
[23:30] experience what it would feel like to take another person's
[23:33] life. Eddie suggested that they could
[23:36] make it look like this boy had killed himself if they used a
[23:39] noose to do it, but Scarlett replied Nah, just stab him, slit
[23:43] his throat and stab his back, she said.
[23:46] I know a hidden spot that nobody.
[23:47] Goes to in linear park. You managed to get him out and
[23:50] we meet up at the wooden posts in linear.
[23:53] Then be like let's sit and chill somewhere.
[23:56] We walk to the spot. You.
[23:57] Restrain him, then we slit his throat and stab him, and then
[24:01] I'll help. And with that, Scarlett and
[24:04] Eddie began putting their plans into action.
[24:06] Scarlett decided that the best way to go about it would be
[24:09] luring this boy to the park using a catfish account.
[24:13] Take a pretty girl's pictures, make a fake account, and make
[24:16] this boy believe that this girl wants to meet up with him.
[24:19] But once Scarlett started messaging him, this boy very
[24:22] quickly clocked on to the fact that it was a fake account and
[24:25] he blocked her. The plan was foiled, right?
[24:27] From the first step. And this honestly sent Scarlett
[24:31] crazy because at this point she had become obsessed with the
[24:35] idea of killing someone. Now she had to rethink her
[24:39] target. She needed someone that was even
[24:41] more vulnerable. So she told Eddie we'll just
[24:44] kill Brianna instead. And Eddie's response, just even
[24:48] to read this out loud sickens me.
[24:51] He responded. Yeah, it will be easier and I
[24:54] want to see if it will scream like a man or a girl.
[24:57] Then on the 23rd of January 2023, Scarlett messaged Eddie
[25:02] saying you know that girl I mentioned Brianna, I'm still
[25:05] trying to kill her and the easiest way is pill overdose.
[25:09] And so Scarlett put her next plan into action, spiking and
[25:13] poisoning Brianna with an excess of ibuprofen.
[25:17] The side effects of an ibuprofen overdose can be brutal.
[25:21] Intense stomach pain, blurred vision, muscle cramps, ringing
[25:25] in the ears, dizziness, seizures, difficulty.
[25:27] And breathing, vomiting, death, just to name a few.
[25:31] And that very evening on the 23rd of January, Brianna's
[25:34] mother would come home from work to find her daughter crumpled up
[25:38] on her bed, experiencing exactly that.
[25:42] She had just stepped through the door when she heard Brianna
[25:44] screaming out in agony from her bedroom.
[25:47] And when she ran upstairs, her mum found her quote just
[25:51] writhing around in agony, holding her stomach, saying that
[25:55] she felt like she was going to die.
[25:57] Brianna's. Esther immediately assumed that
[26:00] her daughter had actually self-inflicted this.
[26:03] Brianna's mental health, as we know, was not good.
[26:06] She was struggling with day-to-day life and a
[26:09] self-inflicted overdose honestly wouldn't have been out of the
[26:12] question. And so Esther ran downstairs to
[26:14] get her phone while Brianna called out.
[26:16] I think I'm going to die. Don't leave me, don't leave me.
[26:20] And with that Brianna leant over the side of her bed and threw
[26:24] up. Once she finished, she collapsed
[26:26] back onto her bed, still still tossing and turning in pain.
[26:29] And that was when her mom looked at the vomit on the floor.
[26:33] It's a bit. Gross.
[26:34] But quite frankly, the vomit that had just come out of this
[26:38] girl was bizarre. It was a clear liquid.
[26:41] With what looked like grape skins in it.
[26:44] And so Esther wondered, well, had her daughter eaten too many
[26:48] grapes and made herself I'll? Is that even possible?
[26:51] Is there like some weird chemicals in grapes that can do
[26:54] this to a person? But the answer was that she had.
[26:57] Been spiked with pills by her friend at school, Brianna
[27:01] messaged Scarlett that night to let her know that she was sick,
[27:05] that those tablets that Scarlett had given her earlier were
[27:08] causing her total agony now on. Receipt of this text, Scarlett
[27:13] very excitedly updated Eddie saying Brianna's I'll those
[27:17] tablets I gave her might be slowly killing her.
[27:19] Those tablets in question? Were a load of red.
[27:22] Capsule ibuprofens that Scarlett had bought earlier that day in
[27:26] Asda. She had.
[27:27] Given Brianna a handful, promising that it would give her
[27:31] like a fun little legal high, but she needed to take a load of
[27:35] them because they were so weak. Now.
[27:37] Brianna trusted her friend, and she trusted everything that she
[27:40] said to her. She trusted that these pills
[27:43] wouldn't be dangerous. But Brianna was also very
[27:45] vulnerable, of course. As we've said.
[27:48] So many times she was struggling with her mental health and that
[27:50] naturally made her a little more reckless when it comes to
[27:54] dangerous acts like this. These are all.
[27:57] Reasons why Scarlett had chosen Brianna as a victim in the 1st
[28:00] place. Scarlett was well aware that
[28:03] with Brianna's poor mental health, it would mean less
[28:06] questions about her death. She had even texted Eddie saying
[28:10] people already know that she's depressed and shit so nobody
[28:13] would get SUS. Brianna took this handful of
[28:16] ibuprofen tablets under the impression that Scarlett was
[28:19] also taking a handful, and she was also going to experience
[28:22] this crazy legal high that night.
[28:25] But Scarlett was of course completely fine, probably just
[28:28] waiting for these updates from Brianna.
[28:31] Luckily, throwing up the tablets had began easing the side
[28:34] effects, and Brianna started to recover.
[28:37] Relieved, she texted Scarlett once again, letting her know
[28:40] that she was starting to feel better.
[28:42] And I'm sure you can imagine that Scarlett wasn't very happy
[28:44] to hear that. She texted Eddie saying for some
[28:47] reason, reason, she's got a high tolerance.
[28:49] Like, I gave her some of these today and I thought that that
[28:51] would be enough to kill her. Eddie told her that next time,
[28:54] try doubling the dose. That should at least put him in
[28:57] a coma. Eddie even suggested putting the
[29:00] next round of pills in a McDonald's milkshake.
[29:03] He was just as relentless as Scarlett in the pursuit to
[29:08] murder Brianna Jai. The last week of January 2023
[29:12] had been awful for Brianna. She was so violently ill.
[29:16] And then she was week and recovering that time of year.
[29:19] The weather is miserable too. It's dark, it's cold, it's
[29:22] rainy. For a girl who already doesn't
[29:25] want to leave her bedroom on a good day, these circumstances
[29:28] really were not helping. But Scarlett was blowing up her
[29:32] phone more than usual, actually begging Brianna to come and hang
[29:35] out. She said that she wanted to
[29:37] introduce Brianna to her friend Eddie, which again, for an
[29:41] anxious girlie like Brianna, it was only putting her off going
[29:44] out even more. She did initially agree to meet.
[29:47] Up with the duo the previous Saturday, which was January
[29:50] 28th, they were going to go and meet at Linear Park, but Brianna
[29:54] bailed last minute, instead deciding to go out for lunch
[29:57] with her family. Now Scarlett and Eddie were
[30:00] fuming that their plans were foiled once again.
[30:03] But before Brianna dropped out of these plans, there were a few
[30:06] days where Scarlett and Eddie thought that everything was
[30:09] going to go to plan. And so I want to read you their
[30:12] text messages from those days. The night before, Scarlett
[30:16] texted Eddie saying she's agreed to come to Culture tomorrow.
[30:20] Eddie responded. So I bring my knife.
[30:22] Eddie, by the way, was obsessed with knives.
[30:25] And this particular knife that he was talking about bringing,
[30:28] he had recently brought back from a skiing holiday in
[30:31] Bulgaria, and he was very eager to use it to kill someone, to
[30:36] kill Brianna. Scarlett told him, yes, it's
[30:39] definitely sharp enough. By the way, meet me at the
[30:42] Wooden purse in Linear at 12. We'll go over the plan again and
[30:45] I'll show you where I'm killing her and then we both walk to the
[30:49] library to meet her and grab onto Brianna, slit her throat
[30:53] and when she starts to fall stab her in the back then pass me the
[30:57] knife. I want to stab her at least once
[31:00] even if she's dead just because it's fun lol.
[31:03] My God, like I need a minute before I carry on that.
[31:06] Last sentence was so fucking evil man.
[31:10] I want to stab her at least once even if she's already dead.
[31:14] Just. Because it's fun lol Oh my God.
[31:18] Eddie expressed to Scarlett that he thought they needed a more
[31:23] concrete plan, a step by step, even code words so that they
[31:27] both knew for sure when to act. He said let's have two words,
[31:31] one for getting the knife ready and one to stab.
[31:34] To which Scarlett said forgetting the knife ready, I'll
[31:37] look at you and cough and to stab I'll say gay.
[31:41] You heard that right, Their second code word Well.
[31:44] The only code word was gay. Now later on in this episode
[31:49] you'll see that there is a whole debate that surrounds this case
[31:53] as to whether or not it is classed as a hate.
[31:55] Crime. And that might.
[31:57] Catch a lot of you by surprise. I mean, we've all heard the text
[32:00] now, the way that these two people.
[32:02] Discuss Brianna's identity is so disgustingly transphobic.
[32:07] I honestly find it hard to believe that this wasn't a hate
[32:10] crime that was motivated by Brianna's identity as a trans
[32:14] girl. We've seen the way that Eddie
[32:16] speaks about her identity. That is without question, total
[32:20] transphobia. But the debate is more around
[32:23] the way that Scarlett feels about Brianna because, I mean,
[32:27] it does seem very, very complex. Scarlett herself words it as an
[32:32] obsession. She gets nervous around Brianna,
[32:35] it sounds. Like I said, like a crush
[32:38] almost. Some people argue that Brianna's
[32:41] identity as a trans girl. Actually had nothing to do with
[32:46] Scarlett's complex obsession and that it could have come to this
[32:50] murderous end if Brianna had been a CIS girl.
[32:53] But I really don't know. I mean, like I said, we'll come
[32:57] back to this towards the end of the episode since there is a
[33:00] whole debate when it comes to the court case and stuff.
[33:04] And I do want you to hear the rest of this episode before we
[33:07] have that discussion. But I did want to point it out
[33:09] here at the very least, especially to stress that it was
[33:12] scarlet that. Chose the code word gay and up
[33:16] until this point, Scarlett had been the much more neutral 1
[33:20] when it comes to Brianna's identity.
[33:21] Scarlett had always used Brianna's correct pronouns she
[33:25] her when she was texting about. Her to Eddie.
[33:28] But this choice in Code Word reveals something that we
[33:32] haven't really seen in Scarlett yet.
[33:35] The trigger word to start this attack was going to be used in a
[33:39] homophobic way, so doesn't that automatically class this case as
[33:44] a hate crime? But despite Scarlett and Eddie
[33:46] ironing out all their plans, code words and all, Brianna
[33:50] still cancelled last minute. And Scarlett texted Eddie saying
[33:54] I'm fucking pissed. Brianna just said she can't
[33:56] come. So with their initial plans
[33:58] cancelled, Eddie instead went to Scarlett's house and they
[34:02] decided to go to Linear Park anyway so that they could scope
[34:05] out the area where the murder would eventually take place and
[34:10] essentially do a recce. While they were there messing
[34:13] around at the park, Scarlett took a video of Eddie underneath
[34:17] a bridge just two minutes away from where they would murder
[34:21] Brianna Jai. One week later, Eddie and
[34:23] Scarlett parted ways at 3 PMA. Few hours later Scarlett sent
[34:28] him a text saying that Brianna was free after school on Tuesday
[34:31] of next week so they could do it then maybe.
[34:34] But Eddie said that he he couldn't make it that day
[34:36] because it was a school night. And again, I need a second just
[34:40] to like comprehend all of that. That really hammers in that
[34:44] these are kids killing other kids.
[34:47] It's so fucking horrific. Scarlett replied to him saying.
[34:50] I don't want to wait, I just want it done really badly.
[34:54] I just want to see her die ASAP. I want to see the pure horror on
[35:00] her face and hear her scream in pain.
[35:03] But she just couldn't convince Eddie to commit the murder on a
[35:06] school night. Scarlett's impatience LED her to
[35:10] suggest killing Brianna with a cocaine overdose instead.
[35:13] Maybe. But she very quickly talked
[35:15] herself out of that idea as quickly as it came up.
[35:18] It would be a very expensive thing to get a hold of that much
[35:23] cocaine to kill a person. And she also realized that
[35:26] feeding her an overdose wouldn't ultimately satisfy the urge that
[35:30] Scarlett had to quote, see the pure horror on her face and hear
[35:34] her screaming in pain. And so she said to Eddie, let's
[35:38] just stab her. It's more fun.
[35:40] So. The park plan was back on.
[35:42] They agreed with Brianna that they would all meet up there on
[35:45] Saturday the 11th of February 2023.
[35:49] By the 3rd of February, Scarlett had written up the official
[35:53] murder plan and it read Saturday 11th of.
[35:56] February 2023 Victim Brianna Jai plan Meet Eddie at Wooden Posts
[36:02] at 1:00 PM. Walk down to the library bus
[36:05] stop. Wait until Brianna gets off the
[36:07] bus, then the three of us walk to Linear.
[36:10] Park, go to the pipe slash tunnel area.
[36:13] I say a code word to Eddie. He stabs her in the back as I
[36:17] stab her in the stomach. Eddie drags the body into the
[36:20] area. We both cover up the area with
[36:23] logs, etcetera. Two days before the murder was
[36:27] to take place, Scarlett messaged Eddie telling him I'm excited
[36:30] about Saturday and he asked why? Scarlett says.
[36:34] Brianna, remember, are you excited?
[36:37] Eddie actually responded to this saying.
[36:41] I forgot, Scarlett asks how and Eddie says because I'm eating.
[36:45] I know I keep pausing this to have to digest moments of this
[36:49] dialogue, but they just keep saying mad shit man.
[36:53] He forgot about this murder plot that had been months in the
[36:56] making because he was busy eating.
[36:58] That's how much this shit doesn't matter to him.
[37:01] That Oh my God, it's, it's grotesque.
[37:04] Anyways, the following night was Friday evening.
[37:07] The very next day they would be putting their murder.
[37:11] Plan into action. And so that night, Scarlett and.
[37:14] Eddie are texting. Back and forth, making sure that
[37:17] they have everything in place. And as they're texting, Scarlett
[37:20] is watching Sweeney Todd in some sick sort of excited.
[37:25] Preparation, you know, hyping herself up for the next day, she
[37:29] told Eddie, I'm excited as fuck for tomorrow.
[37:32] And she sent him a clip of the movie of Sweeney Todd,
[37:35] commenting on how sharp Sweeney Todd's knife was The.
[37:38] Sick and twisted plans that had been over.
[37:41] For a month in the making would all come to a head the very next
[37:45] day. It would change two of their
[37:47] lives forever, and for Brianna, it would end hers way too soon.
[37:52] Saturday, the 11th of February was a freezing day, but the sky
[37:56] was clear. There was no rain and so Brianna
[37:59] could wear her favorite white fluffy jacket.
[38:02] As she got ready to go out, she chatted with her Internet
[38:04] bestie, Amelia, as usual. She told her that she was
[38:07] meeting her other friend, Scarlett this afternoon at 1:30
[38:11] PM, Brianna had picked out a Gray miniskirt, some long white
[38:15] knee socks, and of course, her signature fluffy white jacket.
[38:19] Her hair was done, her makeup was done, and by 12:45 she was
[38:23] ready to leave and catch the bus.
[38:25] But. This is where things get weird.
[38:28] There was actually a bus stop right next to Brianna's house
[38:31] that would take her all the way to Linear Park, but Scarlett had
[38:35] instructed her to take a very particular route to the park
[38:38] that day. She told Brianna to walk a
[38:41] whole. Half an hour in the other
[38:43] direction to Birchwood train station and then get a bus from
[38:46] there instead. Scarlett even instructed her to
[38:49] get a child's single ticket to Culture Library.
[38:53] Now for my international audience.
[38:56] Single ticket is a one way ticket.
[38:58] Scarlett was so blatant about the fact that she never planned
[39:02] for Brianna to make it home from their park meet up.
[39:05] I'm not sure if Scarlett ever gave Brianna a reason as to why
[39:08] she was like sending her through the strange route, but Brianna
[39:12] simply did as she had been ordered.
[39:14] In retrospect, it's so clear to see that Scarlett is trying to
[39:18] throw off any potential investigation that would follow
[39:21] Brianna's disappearance. When Brianna boarded the bus,
[39:25] she immediately stuck out to the bus driver.
[39:27] Actually, he remembered thinking that she seemed very timid, like
[39:31] someone who wanted to be left alone.
[39:32] And you know it's. True, Brianna was a very anxious
[39:35] girl. This was the first time that she
[39:37] had left the house in days after having a bad stint with her
[39:41] mental health. All she wanted to do at this
[39:43] point in time was stay at, but she knew that the healthy thing
[39:47] to do was to push herself to socialize and to get some fresh
[39:51] air. Brianna was doing an act of
[39:54] self-care that day, even though it was so hard for her to get
[39:57] herself out of the house. As she sat down, Brianna took a
[40:01] picture of her feet and messaged her mom, saying that she had
[40:03] just gotten on the bus, but she was really scared.
[40:06] Her mum messaged her back, reassuring her that she was
[40:09] proud of her for catching the bus all by herself.
[40:11] At 1:53 PM, Brianna arrived at her destination.
[40:16] She got off the bus and she was met by Scarlett, who had been
[40:19] eagerly waiting for her on the footpath.
[40:22] Eddie, on the other hand, is. Weirdly like.
[40:24] Lingering off to the side. On the CCTV footage it looks
[40:29] almost like he was trying to like play it cool, trying to
[40:31] seem disinterested in Brianna, but we all know that that
[40:35] couldn't be further from. From the truth, she had been his
[40:38] and Scarlett's main topic of conversation for literally
[40:42] months. I mean, Eddie was, in his own
[40:45] words, socially inept, so maybe that's.
[40:47] Why he? Wasn't talking to Brianna,
[40:49] saying hi to her, but either way, he eventually joined the
[40:52] girls and they headed to Linear Park.
[40:55] And in his pocket this whole time was the knife, the plan for
[40:58] the day, or at least what they told Brianna.
[41:01] Was that they would be. Picking up some cocaine from a
[41:04] dealer and they would all be trying it together.
[41:06] This would be. Brianna's first time doing
[41:08] cocaine and she was nervous. In fact, she wasn't even 100%
[41:12] sure that she would actually do any, but she was at that age
[41:16] where you're curious about the taboo.
[41:19] Can I just side note this with a caution to those that might be
[41:22] feeling the same. I don't want to sound like your
[41:24] teachers and say like, don't do drugs kids, even though I
[41:27] probably should be saying exactly that.
[41:29] But I know that that's the kind of attitude that makes kids
[41:32] rebel and want to and want to do drugs even more.
[41:35] So what I will say is, is please be so incredibly careful if you
[41:40] do choose to experiment, because you never truly know what's in
[41:44] any substance that you buy from some dodgy character.
[41:47] My mom always used to tell me that the first time you try
[41:50] drugs could well be the last because you never know if it's
[41:54] cut and mixed with something that could kill you.
[41:57] We've seen it way too many times.
[41:59] Drug testing facilities exist for this exact reason and you
[42:03] won't see repercussions for getting your drugs safe.
[42:06] Checked, look into the Weddinos project for example.
[42:10] That's here in the UK. You know, just to conclude this
[42:13] point, I won't tell you what to do with your life, but I will
[42:16] beg you to be careful about whatever you choose to do
[42:19] because it's a very fucking tricky guessing game that is way
[42:23] too easy to lose and never wake up from.
[42:26] Sorry, my drug PSA out of the way.
[42:29] Back to this case. Brianna on that day thought that
[42:33] she was in trusted company. She believed that Scarlett was a
[42:36] good friend of hers. Though it seems that Eddie being
[42:39] there that day was making her more anxious than she usually
[42:43] was. But anyways, the three of them
[42:45] walked down a main road, down an alleyway and onto a housing
[42:49] estate to reach the entrance to Linear Park.
[42:52] They were on route. To reach that pipe slash tunnel
[42:55] that Scarlett had written about in the murder plan.
[42:58] But Brianna was starting to feel uneasy, mostly about the whole
[43:02] cocaine situation. The whole time that they'd been
[43:05] walking, Scarlett had been Snapchatting the dealer that she
[43:09] was supposed to be picking up from.
[43:11] Or at least that's what she told.
[43:12] Brianna Scarlett was actually secretly snapping herself.
[43:17] She was having a conversation with herself to make this whole
[43:21] cocaine pick up ruse seem real. As time passed, Brianna started
[43:27] catching on that something was up, she just didn't know what
[43:30] she was feeling. Anxious about it all and so she
[43:33] decided to hang back and wait while Eddie and Scarlett went
[43:37] off to go and meet this fake dealer.
[43:40] At 2:15 PM Brianna snapchatted Scarlett saying girl I'ma wait
[43:44] here until we have drugs lol I'm too anxious.
[43:47] So she's on her own. 15 minutes later she's still waiting for
[43:52] them to return when she messages bestie Amelia saying Scarlett is
[43:56] so weird girl. I think she's pretending to have
[44:00] a dealer. It just felt like they had
[44:02] dragged Brianna on this wild goose chase waiting to meet a
[44:06] dealer that. Clearly.
[44:07] Never existed. 20 more minutes passed without hearing from
[44:11] Scarlet and so Brianna text at 3:00 or 6:00 PM saying girl
[44:16] where are you? It had been nearly an hour at
[44:19] this point since Scarlet and Eddie left, but just 7 minutes
[44:24] after that last message was sent, Brianna's dead body would
[44:28] be discovered. It's estimated that between 3:00
[44:31] or 7:00 and 3:12. In that gap of just 5 minutes,
[44:36] Scarlet and Eddie snuck up on Brianna.
[44:39] Scarlet coughed the 1st signal and then the word gay was
[44:44] shouted, and with that code word the brutal attack began.
[44:49] Breanna Jai was stabbed 28 times in total, fourteen of which were
[44:56] to her head and her neck, severing major blood vessels.
[45:01] The remaining 14 stab wounds were to her chest, 12 of which
[45:05] came from behind. When she was snuck up on, unable
[45:09] to defend herself, her lungs and her heart were punctured, her
[45:13] bones were damaged, and the deepest stab wound was 5 inches
[45:18] deep. And blessed Brianna, She really
[45:21] did try to fight for her life. Once she realized what was going
[45:25] on, she tried to get them off of her.
[45:27] She was covered in defensive injuries all over her hands, her
[45:31] arms, her wrists. Later on, it became clear that
[45:34] she'd. Sustained a lot of these
[45:36] defensive injuries from trying to cover her face and her neck,
[45:40] trying to protect herself from a girl that she had considered
[45:44] probably her closest school. Friend.
[45:47] For a brief moment during the attack, Brianna actually managed
[45:50] to slip away from her attackers and get herself over to some
[45:54] nearby steps, but Scarlett and Eddie caught up to her,
[45:58] restrained her and continued the attack.
[46:01] This attack was brutal and tragically, Brianna was
[46:06] conscious all the way through. She was only 16 years old.
[46:10] She was terrified, betrayed, and in so much agony in that
[46:15] freezing February weather. She was meant to make it home
[46:20] that night to first time her best friend Amelia, as usual, to
[46:24] eat dinner with her mom and her sister.
[46:27] She wasn't meant to be bleeding out, face down in the mud, and
[46:31] as Eddie and Scarlett stood over her body, they were out of
[46:35] breath, covered in blood. Suddenly, something was about to
[46:39] go very wrong, something that hadn't been a part of their
[46:42] plan. A husband and wife named Andrew
[46:45] and Catherine were out walking their dog through Linear Park at
[46:49] that exact moment. And they spotted Scarlett and
[46:52] Eddie in the distance. Eddie crouched down over
[46:56] something from so far away. The couple just assumed that
[46:59] this boy must be crouching to see a dog, you know, to adjust
[47:03] its lead or something. But as the couple got closer,
[47:07] they noticed that it wasn't a dog, it looked more like maybe a
[47:11] large doll. By now, Eddie and Scarlett had
[47:14] spotted this couple in the distance and they were panicking
[47:18] because this couple were getting closer and closer and they would
[47:21] actually probably be able to recognize like to remember
[47:24] their. Faces.
[47:25] So they got up and Eddie began to walk very quickly away,
[47:29] almost like at a jogging pace, knowing that he needed to get
[47:32] away quickly, but without seeming too suspicious.
[47:36] But I mean. It was a bit late for that,
[47:38] especially because Scarlett. Actually hung back and she stood
[47:43] staring down this couple that we're approaching, almost trying
[47:47] to intimidate them. It was like a standoff.
[47:50] She locked eyes with Catherine for about 8 to 10 seconds and
[47:54] Catherine said this just sent shivers down her spine and once
[47:59] Scarlett broke the eye contact, she scampered off after Eddie
[48:02] into a nearby field. Catherine and Andrew got a very
[48:05] uneasy feeling from this whole thing, and while they initially
[48:08] thought that this would turn out to be some sort of childish
[48:11] prank or a misunderstanding, they quickly realized the horror
[48:15] of what they had just stumbled upon.
[48:17] Catherine noticed that this wasn't some sort of.
[48:20] Life-size mannequin doll. It was a real girl.
[48:25] Covered in blood, this couple had just scared off this girl's
[48:30] attackers. Catherine and Andrew had a flash
[48:33] of pure horror and panic, but they very.
[48:36] Quickly snapped into action to try to save this young girl,
[48:40] Andrew crouched down next to Brianna and told her.
[48:43] It's OK, we're going to get some help for you.
[48:45] But they couldn't shake the thought that they might already
[48:49] be too late. There was just so much blood.
[48:52] They couldn't see how Brianna could possibly survive this.
[48:56] Catherine very frantically called 999, telling them that
[48:59] they'd found a girl. They need an ambulance, she
[49:02] tells the operator. We've seen the attackers run
[49:04] away. It was very clear on the call
[49:06] that Catherine feared that Brianna wouldn't make it.
[49:10] Her injuries were just so severe, Catherine was worried
[49:14] that the paramedics wouldn't be able to find them given how deep
[49:17] into the park. That they were, and so she
[49:19] jogged all the way back to the car park, which was about half a
[49:23] mile 3/4 of a mile away. Away so that she would be able
[49:26] to meet the paramedics and direct them to Brianna when they
[49:29] arrived. As Catherine had run off to go
[49:32] and meet the emergency services, Andrew stayed with Brianna.
[49:36] He could have sworn at one point that he heard Brianna breathe or
[49:40] sigh and he told her not to worry.
[49:43] They've called the police, just hang in there.
[49:45] At 3:25 PM, the 1st police officers arrived on the scene
[49:49] incredibly fast. I have to say Catherine and
[49:52] Andrew only found her at 3:19, so within 6 minutes there was an
[49:57] officer there. Catherine brought this guy over
[49:59] to where Brianna was laying face down on the floor.
[50:02] He turned her onto her back and he tried to give Brianna CPR
[50:06] while paramedics and and air ambulances arrived a few minutes
[50:10] later. Obviously the location that this
[50:13] had taken place made it all the more difficult to reach and to
[50:16] treat Brianna. There were no roads nearby,
[50:19] there was nothing. Notable to help like direct the
[50:22] different emergency services. It was all just fucking trees.
[50:26] Scarlett and Eddie had done this on purpose.
[50:28] They had taken her out into the depths of the park to put a
[50:32] barrier between Brianna and any potential rescue mission.
[50:37] And then? Then at 4:00 or 2:00 PM came the
[50:40] heartbreaking declaration, a little over 2 hours since
[50:44] Brianna had gotten off the bus to meet who she thought were her
[50:47] friends. Brianna Jai was pronounced dead.
[50:50] She had literally only just turned 16 years old three months
[50:55] prior to this. She was a baby with so much life
[50:59] ahead of her. She was meant to be sitting her
[51:01] GCSE. Soon she would be starting
[51:03] College in the September. Her life had barely even begun.
[51:08] Especially her life as Brianna. All her plans that she had to to
[51:12] grow on TikTok, to move out and live with her best friend
[51:16] Amelia. To meet Amelia in person for the
[51:19] first time, to get over her anxiety, to get all of her
[51:23] surgeries, to watch herself grow and blossom and flourish, all of
[51:29] it was so abruptly and violently torn away from her.
[51:33] And it breaks my heart, especially thinking about how
[51:36] brave Brianna had been to battle her agoraphobia.
[51:41] Her anxiety to even just get. Herself out of the house that
[51:44] day, no matter how much it scared her.
[51:46] Throughout researching this case, I really relate.
[51:49] To a lot of aspects of Brianna's mental health struggle because I
[51:53] was similarly agoraphobic when I was her age.
[51:56] Of course, there are a lot of different factors at play
[51:58] between Brianna's anxiety and my own.
[52:00] But The thing is, the thing that really got me is that I was
[52:04] lucky enough to outlive my agoraphobia and my anxiety.
[52:09] I grew up into an adult which gave me the opportunity to beat
[52:14] that anxiety that debilitated me.
[52:16] And I believe so strongly that Brianna would have gotten there
[52:19] to if she'd have just been allowed that time to to live and
[52:24] to work through those struggles. I mean, look at her being so
[52:27] brave on the very last day that she had here on earth just to
[52:32] get on the bus alone and meet a brand new friend of a friend at
[52:35] the park. She was already on her way to
[52:39] beating her own mental struggles.
[52:41] I just wish more than anything that she would have had more
[52:45] time and more help to grow into the amazing woman that I just
[52:49] know that she was heading to be. Now before we move on, before we
[52:53] talk about the police investigation, this has been a
[52:55] very heavy emotional last couple of minutes of the episode so I
[52:59] do just want to give a bit of a time to recover.
[53:02] And I also want to take some time to shout out a charity that
[53:05] is not only close to my heart, but so close to so many other
[53:09] LGBT hearts up and down the country.
[53:12] Mermaids is auk charity that is completely dedicated to
[53:16] supporting trans, non binary and gender diverse.
[53:19] Children, young people and their families.
[53:22] Mermaids run a helpline that trans, non binary and gender
[53:25] questioning people can call whenever immediate support is
[53:29] needed. But this hotline can also be
[53:31] utilized if you're a friend or a parent or a teacher or a
[53:34] guardian of someone that could use that support.
[53:38] Mermaids also run monthly in person events in cities all over
[53:42] England to bring people together for peer-to-peer community
[53:47] support which helps these young gender diverse kids to feel less
[53:52] alone. It builds their self esteem, it
[53:54] gives them a sense of belonging in this world which can be sadly
[53:58] very hard, very difficult to achieve in a world where it
[54:02] takes so much courage and bravery just to be yourself
[54:06] where you're used. As a political scapegoat to
[54:09] detract from real issues and used in the media like your
[54:12] identity and your rights should be debated.
[54:15] We need to. Support the trans community more
[54:17] than ever. As always, we will link
[54:19] Mermaid's website in the description of this episode.
[54:22] There you can find their helpline, you can find different
[54:25] resources and of course there is the option to donate to help to
[54:29] fund the amazing work that they do.
[54:32] Please. If you have a couple of quid to
[54:34] spare this Pride month, just know that you would be helping
[54:37] the trans youth to find their way in this world.
[54:40] Now back to Brianna's case. That evening around 5:00 PM, as
[54:45] the sun was setting, Brianna's mom Esther was on a dog walk
[54:49] with her partner. And as they were out, they
[54:51] noticed just how many police cars were speeding through town.
[54:56] And Esther even made a joke to her partner.
[54:58] She said if Brianna doesn't turn up soon, I'll have to ring the
[55:01] police for her as well. Like I said, it was. 5:00 PM.
[55:04] So it wasn't too late, but they were wondering where Brianna was
[55:08] and what she was up to. They hadn't had a text update
[55:10] from her in a while, but they weren't too worried yet.
[55:14] But by the time they had circled back to their street, they
[55:18] spotted 2 police officers standing outside of their open
[55:22] front door. Brianna Sister Alicia was
[55:24] sitting in a state of shock on the stairs.
[55:28] The two officers asked Esther if she wanted to sit down, but she
[55:31] said no, she just wanted to hear what they were there for.
[55:34] They told her that they had found a body and that body is
[55:38] believed to be her daughter Brianna.
[55:40] But strangely, the police told Esther and Alicia that they
[55:44] didn't yet know her cause of death.
[55:46] I guess they wanted to be 100% sure what had happened before
[55:50] telling them. I guess this was all unfolding
[55:53] very, very quickly. But this was at 5:00 PM when her
[55:56] family are being told. At 553 PMA, text was sent to
[56:00] Brianna's phone from her best friend Amelia.
[56:03] Amelia said that she had just woken up from a nap, but she was
[56:06] asking Brianna if she was OK because Remember, Remember, the
[56:09] last thing that Brianna had even said to Amelia was about how
[56:12] Scarlett was weird and it seemed like she was faking meeting a
[56:15] dealer, so Amelia didn't think too much of it.
[56:18] Until. 8 hours later. When she still hadn't heard from
[56:22] Brianna. And so she texted her again,
[56:24] saying, Girl, you better not be dead.
[56:26] Later that night, as news reports began circulating,
[56:29] Amelia followed up with a flood of horrified texts saying No
[56:34] Brianna. Now, the first and only time
[56:37] Amelia would ever get to meet her best friend in real life
[56:41] would be at her funeral. By now, of course, a police
[56:44] investigation was well underway, and lucky for detectives, their
[56:48] murderers were a couple of fucking idiots who had left a
[56:51] very clear trail that could be followed minutes after Eddie and
[56:55] Scarlett scampered out of Linear Park.
[56:58] They were caught on a few different cameras, one being a
[57:00] car's dash Cam, another being a house's Ring doorbell.
[57:04] They're both walking with no sense of urgency.
[57:07] You wouldn't think anything if you pass them in the street.
[57:10] And then they both split up and went in their separate
[57:13] directions to their separate homes.
[57:16] Eddie boarded a bus and he was actually caught on the CCTV of
[57:20] the bus rubbing blood from his hands as he paid for his ticket.
[57:24] As Scarlett made her way home, she actually dropped Brianna's
[57:29] phone, which was covered in her blood, into a drain, hoping that
[57:33] it wouldn't be traced back to her but once the 2 arrived at
[57:37] their respective houses. That's when shit started to feel
[57:40] real. Eddie began freaking out.
[57:42] He was Googling how to cope with anxiety, trying to self soothe,
[57:47] knowing damn well that the consequences of his actions
[57:50] would be severe. Scarlett.
[57:52] On the other hand, couldn't be more different.
[57:55] She was sat at home doing some online shopping for.
[57:58] Flared. Jeans and that flawed me.
[58:01] Either she really is that unbothered that her mind had
[58:05] moved on and she's happily shopping, or maybe she's trying
[58:10] to craft some sort of like, late alibi.
[58:13] Like if her Internet history on the day of the crime looked
[58:17] innocent and oblivious, then maybe that could help her case.
[58:21] I don't know. But Speaking of creating a fake
[58:23] alibi, let me tell you about the text that Eddie and Scarlett
[58:26] proceeded to share between themselves that evening.
[58:29] Bear in mind they have already been texting so openly about how
[58:33] much they want to stab Brianna, about the weapons, the
[58:37] locations, the code words, whole fucking 9 yards.
[58:40] This whole time they have been texting like no one's watching.
[58:43] But now they decide to switch up.
[58:45] At 5:25 PM Scarlett texted Eddie saying my brother just told me
[58:49] not to go to linear park because a woman got stabbed.
[58:53] Eddie texted her back saying Jesus really?
[58:55] Holy crap, they're sending. Each of their.
[58:57] Links to press reports acting like they're finding out the
[59:01] news in real time. First that a woman was stabbed
[59:05] in the park, then when the news broke that it was Brianna Jai.
[59:09] And then when the news broke that she was pronounced dead,
[59:12] they're sending each other updates.
[59:14] I get the. Sense that forming an alibi in
[59:16] this way was just an excuse to. Stay up to date with how the
[59:21] case was unfolding. They were reveling in what they
[59:25] had done in the life that they had taken and the devastating
[59:29] ripple effect that their actions were having on the whole
[59:32] community now. At 11:11 PM, Scarlett texted
[59:37] Eddie asking do you have anxiety about getting caught?
[59:41] And he replied to her saying probably, but she reassured him.
[59:45] You're not going to get caught, don't worry.
[59:47] Police are shite here the next morning.
[59:49] Scarlett deleted a Snapchat conversation that she had had
[59:53] with Brianna, and a little later that day she texted Brianna's
[59:57] phone, the one she threw in a drain saying girl, is everything
[1:00:01] OK? Some teenage girl got killed in
[1:00:03] Linear Park. It's on the news everywhere and
[1:00:06] why did you ditch us for some random man from Manchester?
[1:00:10] Like WTF that's so fucked up. Again, we're going to pause to
[1:00:15] comprehend what the fuck that was.
[1:00:18] How evil. For Scarlett to cover her own
[1:00:21] back by planting a seed of victim blaming Here in this text
[1:00:26] lying about Brianna going to meet quote some random man from
[1:00:30] Manchester. To throw the scent off of
[1:00:33] herself and Eddie. I guess she was.
[1:00:36] Hoping that the. Police would read that text and
[1:00:38] think, well, the culprit must be this random man from Manchester.
[1:00:42] Like also that is such a. Random lie and it's just the
[1:00:46] cherry on top of all the fucked up things that she has done and
[1:00:49] the fact that she is now berating Brianna over text after
[1:00:54] killing her. Like Scarlett has made-up this
[1:00:58] fake thing that Brianna supposedly did to upset her.
[1:01:01] You know, she ditched them for Manchester man.
[1:01:04] Her actual words were what the fuck?
[1:01:06] That's so fucked up girl. You fucking murdered her.
[1:01:10] And you have the nerve to text that to your victim's phone the
[1:01:13] next morning to prevent you going to jail and her receiving
[1:01:17] justice. Like there is a special place.
[1:01:20] In hell for that kind of behaviour.
[1:01:22] Scarlett Jenkinson. Like that bit made me so fuming
[1:01:26] when we were going through the research.
[1:01:27] But anyways, I'm going to compose myself so I can carry on
[1:01:30] telling you guys the remainder of this case.
[1:01:33] Coming up on the 24 hour mark after committing the murder,
[1:01:37] Scarlett is receiving a bunch of texts from different people who
[1:01:40] were seeing the reports about Brianna's death.
[1:01:42] And obviously so many people knew that this was Scarlett's
[1:01:45] friend. So they're texting her saying,
[1:01:47] Oh my God, have you seen this? Is this all about Brianna, your
[1:01:50] friend? Brianna and Scarlett responded
[1:01:52] to one of them saying Brianna was with us for like 50 minutes
[1:01:56] and then ditched us to meet some lad.
[1:01:58] It wouldn't have been her. She said she was going to
[1:02:00] Manchester. Scarlett's own boyfriend was the
[1:02:03] next one to message her about this, and he was really upset,
[1:02:07] really distressed about this murder.
[1:02:09] But bizarrely, Scarlet almost forgets that it's supposed to be
[1:02:14] her who was super close with Brianna.
[1:02:17] She replied to her boyfriend as if it was his.
[1:02:20] Friend that had died, she's saying it's going to be OK baby.
[1:02:23] I'm here for you, baby. And at this point, Scarlett's
[1:02:27] parents, which is something we haven't thought about yet.
[1:02:31] What? Her parents?
[1:02:32] Were thinking they were growing quite concerned about this whole
[1:02:35] thing. They knew that their daughter
[1:02:38] had met up with Brianna the day before, the day that Brianna had
[1:02:42] been. Killed.
[1:02:43] They knew that Scarlett would have been one of the last people
[1:02:46] to have seen Brianna Jai alive before her body was discovered.
[1:02:51] Now, I'm not saying that they were suspecting their daughter
[1:02:53] of having done anything awful, of having committed the murder,
[1:02:58] but they did know that she needed to talk to the police and
[1:03:00] tell them everything she knew. And so at 5:00 PM, Scarlett's
[1:03:04] mom, actually. Called the police telling them
[1:03:06] that her daughter had been with Brianna the day before and she
[1:03:10] even handed the phone to Scarlett to speak to the police
[1:03:13] directly. Now Scarlett told the operator
[1:03:17] that Brianna had stormed off to go and meet a 17 year old boy
[1:03:22] from Manchester and that was the last she had seen her.
[1:03:25] When Scarlett eventually got off the phone with the police, she
[1:03:28] texted Eddie at 6:00 PM saying make sure your story adds up.
[1:03:32] Say to police we met Brianna at 1:30, walked to Linea, sat and
[1:03:37] chilled on the bench and then Brianna.
[1:03:39] Looked at her. Phone said she was going to meet
[1:03:41] some lad and walked off like I know these.
[1:03:43] Kids are 50, 15 years old and obviously clearly very stupid
[1:03:48] but it's next level to be texting so openly about getting
[1:03:53] your story straight. Like what was the point in them
[1:03:57] pretending to learn of this case in real time and sending each
[1:04:01] other reports being like Oh my God have you heard about the
[1:04:04] stabbing in linear Park? If they're just going to text
[1:04:07] like this again straight after, like are they expecting police
[1:04:11] to read their texts or not? Like they none of it makes
[1:04:14] sense. To me.
[1:04:15] But anyways, 25 minutes later, Scarlett does something
[1:04:20] egregious. She posted on her Snapchat story
[1:04:24] a photo of Brianna. A screenshot of Brianna D's
[1:04:29] death being announced and Scarlett captioned it.
[1:04:32] Brianna was one of the best people I've ever met and such an
[1:04:36] amazing friend. So fucking sickening what got
[1:04:40] done to her. Again, she is trying to throw
[1:04:43] the scent off herself. She wants to blend in with the
[1:04:46] rest of their shocked, grieving classmates.
[1:04:50] People knew that Scarlett and Brianna were friends and so
[1:04:53] Scarlett had to act the part in front of everyone.
[1:04:57] It's so messed up on so many levels that she was planning her
[1:05:01] murder for months. Only to post her photo after
[1:05:06] killing her captioning it that she was one of the best people
[1:05:09] you ever met. Like I'm trying to work out.
[1:05:12] Is there any remorse in this at all?
[1:05:15] Like a guilty. Streak that is now leading her
[1:05:18] to say nice things about Brianna now that she's killed her.
[1:05:21] But you know, I actually don't think there is any remorse or
[1:05:25] guilt in this whatsoever. I think we would see it seep
[1:05:28] through more of Scarlett's actions if there was, but we
[1:05:31] just don't see it anywhere else. She's shopping for flared jeans.
[1:05:35] She's designing her alibi. She's even berating Brianna over
[1:05:39] text. Meanwhile, at home in his
[1:05:42] bedroom, Eddie was in a very different headspace.
[1:05:45] He was online looking at the Crown Prosecution website.
[1:05:49] He was doing his research. He wanted to know just how much
[1:05:52] trouble he was in. He was looking up Data
[1:05:55] Protection Act offenses and penalties for supplying or
[1:05:59] withholding information. He also looked at page.
[1:06:02] About people giving evidence and and receiving bail.
[1:06:07] But his reading would be cut short because at 7:30 PM, the
[1:06:11] police would be at both Eddie and Scarlett's doors.
[1:06:15] The police had a mountain of evidence already to arrest the
[1:06:19] pair. There was CCTV evidence, so many
[1:06:21] different forms of it. There were witness statements
[1:06:24] all linking them both to the scene of the crime.
[1:06:27] And so with that, Scarlett Jenkinson and Eddie Ratcliffe,
[1:06:31] both just 15 years of age, were arrested on suspicion of the
[1:06:36] murder of Brianna Jai. How come?
[1:06:39] How come you're a suspect? Person.
[1:06:42] I don't know all the information I've received as you are a
[1:06:45] suspect, okay? For the murder, yeah.
[1:06:49] I can't explain. When the two of them were
[1:06:54] arrested, their bedrooms were searched and in Scarlets, the
[1:06:58] police found a six inch kitchen knife with blood on.
[1:07:03] But the blood actually turned out to be her own.
[1:07:07] It wasn't Brianna's. This wasn't the knife that was
[1:07:11] used to kill Brianna, but there was more stuff found in
[1:07:14] Scarlett's bedroom. There was a bounty of
[1:07:17] handwritten notes, including the step by step murder plot that
[1:07:22] she had written out, titled Victim Brianna Jai, but that.
[1:07:26] Wasn't the only murder plot that she had thought about.
[1:07:29] There was a Plan B and a plan C if the first 2 failed.
[1:07:34] One of them was give them alcohol with sleeping pills slit
[1:07:39] throat dismember body. Place.
[1:07:41] Pieces in bin bags. Bury bags 7 feet underground,
[1:07:46] another plan read. Get her to go to linear park.
[1:07:49] Go to the hidden spot near the bridge I usually go to.
[1:07:52] Someone jumps out and restrains her.
[1:07:54] I kill her. There were several notebooks
[1:07:57] just filled with dodgy shit in Scarlett's bedroom.
[1:08:01] She would make notes about rape victims and murder victims,
[1:08:05] facts about like all her favorite serial killers and and
[1:08:09] different murder methods and ways to get rid of bodies.
[1:08:13] There were pages where she would write like some random dark
[1:08:16] words like punishment and sin and mortality.
[1:08:21] Just like sprawled. Across the pages there was
[1:08:23] nothing more to she was just like such a dark tortured soul,
[1:08:27] you know what I mean? Then when police searched Eddie
[1:08:30] Ratcliffe bedroom there they found muddy trainers with blood
[1:08:34] on a blood stained jacket, a hunting knife with blood on.
[1:08:40] And when all of these things were tested, all of the blood
[1:08:43] was a match to Brianna Jai. Upon their simultaneous arrests,
[1:08:48] Eddie and Scarlett were taken to two separate police stations
[1:08:51] where they would spend the next two days consistently being
[1:08:54] questioned. Initially, Scarlett stuck to
[1:08:57] their original story that Brianna had left to meet some 17
[1:09:01] year old lad from Manchester. Scarlett said that she had no
[1:09:05] idea who the boy was. Apparently she had tried to ask,
[1:09:08] but she claimed that Brianna told her stop interrogating me
[1:09:11] so she didn't know. Police asked Scarlett how she
[1:09:15] had found out that Brianna had died and she said that another
[1:09:19] girl had reached out to tell her and then later when she heard it
[1:09:23] on the news, Scarlett said that she burst into tears.
[1:09:26] But after a while, Scarlett was running out of fake answers to
[1:09:30] give. The police just had more and
[1:09:32] more questions that were beginning to trip her up.
[1:09:35] And so eventually she stopped talking entirely and just
[1:09:39] replied with no comment to the rest of the questions.
[1:09:42] Honestly, she was fighting a losing battle anyway at this
[1:09:45] point. She didn't.
[1:09:45] Realize that the police had 11,000 pages of text messages
[1:09:51] between herself and Eddie where they had been discussing and
[1:09:55] detailing the murder. That they were now being accused
[1:09:58] of. These two little geniuses
[1:10:01] thought that if they deleted their thread of text messages
[1:10:04] from their phone, then that also deleted any trace of it ever
[1:10:09] existing completely. Obviously, the police have their
[1:10:13] ways. Your phone network records
[1:10:15] absolutely everything you ever do.
[1:10:17] Deleting something just from your physical phone is only skin
[1:10:21] deep compared to the depths of records that these companies
[1:10:24] keep on their users. I think Eddie had worked out by
[1:10:28] this point that the jig was up. He knew that the police must
[1:10:31] have a decent amount of evidence on him to have even made the
[1:10:34] arrest in the first place. This.
[1:10:36] But he had a plan. He tried to get ahead and
[1:10:41] flipped it all on Scarlet. He said that it was all her.
[1:10:45] He wasn't even there when Scarlet killed Brianna because
[1:10:48] supposedly he had wandered off for a pee for a nature way.
[1:10:53] He claimed that in the 30 seconds that it took him to walk
[1:10:56] a little bit away and turn his back to pee against a tree,
[1:11:00] Scarlett had lost her mind and when he turned.
[1:11:03] Back around to face them again, he saw her stabbing Brianna.
[1:11:07] All of that had apparently taken place in 30 seconds, right?
[1:11:12] He told the. Police about all the mental
[1:11:14] things that Scarlett would text him, all of her fantasies about
[1:11:17] killing people and wanting to see the horror in their face, he
[1:11:21] insists. That he didn't think that she
[1:11:24] was being serious though. He thought that she just had
[1:11:26] like morbid dark fascinations and a dark sense of humor.
[1:11:32] He said that. He whenever he would respond to
[1:11:34] these things, he was just playing along because he wanted
[1:11:37] Scarlett to like him. He said that he didn't think
[1:11:40] that she would ever actually do any of it.
[1:11:43] Clearly. All of that's a big fat lie
[1:11:44] since he literally planned every step of it with her and then
[1:11:49] acted it out just so perfectly according to plan.
[1:11:53] Both of them were deadly serious and they had been this whole
[1:11:56] entire time. Both of them were in it just as
[1:11:59] much as one another. And when Eddie was asked about.
[1:12:02] About his transphobic comments about how he would always
[1:12:05] misgender Brianna and he would make those horrid hate fueled
[1:12:09] comments. Eddie defended himself by saying
[1:12:12] he made gay jokes all the time with his friends.
[1:12:14] This was what the other boys did and so.
[1:12:17] He did it too. That is just Eddie Ratcliffe's
[1:12:20] defense in absolutely everything.
[1:12:22] It's always someone else's fault.
[1:12:24] Eddie can never allow the blame to fall on himself.
[1:12:27] But the police could see through it all, as can we, soon enough.
[1:12:32] Just like they had with Scarlett, the police began to
[1:12:34] break Eddie down. He was slipping up and making
[1:12:37] big blunders in his interrogation, one of which was
[1:12:41] denying taking a knife to the park that day.
[1:12:44] Well, they had. Already discovered the knife in
[1:12:47] his bedroom with Brianna's blood all over it, so now he is just
[1:12:51] putting his foot in it. He is getting caught lying to
[1:12:54] the police so eventually he too reverted to just saying no
[1:12:59] comment after every question. And that is where both of their
[1:13:02] interrogations end. Eight months after Brianna's
[1:13:06] death on November 27th, 2023, the trial for her murder began
[1:13:11] at Manchester Crown. Court the judges on this case
[1:13:14] pre told the jury before entering the courtroom Eddie was
[1:13:17] diagnosed being on the autistic spectrum and Scarlett herself
[1:13:22] was suspected of having autism. But I think it was as the.
[1:13:25] Police were speaking to her and questioning her and
[1:13:28] interrogating her and as she'd like, met up.
[1:13:31] With therapists behind the scenes and stuff, people had
[1:13:34] begun to suspect that she was also on the spectrum, but I
[1:13:37] don't believe she was diagnosed. The jury were also told that.
[1:13:41] Both of these kids, Scarlett and Eddie, were experiencing anxiety
[1:13:46] and Eddie had, as a result, gone nonverbal.
[1:13:50] But that wasn't going to stop him from being a bigoted
[1:13:53] transform during the trial, because for the first time ever
[1:13:57] in British history, Eddie was allowed to write his answers
[1:14:00] down on a board and hold it up on that board.
[1:14:04] When referring to Brianna, he would only ever refer to her as
[1:14:08] He or it. And this was not an accident.
[1:14:12] It wasn't from a lack of understanding.
[1:14:14] He had been introduced to Brianna through Scarlett as a
[1:14:17] girl. Even Scarlett was always using
[1:14:20] she her pronouns for Brianna. So Eddie would repeatedly,
[1:14:24] intentionally go out of his way to disrespect and dehumanize his
[1:14:29] murder victim at her own trial, in front of her grieving family,
[1:14:33] in front of the media, in front of the jury, who would be
[1:14:37] deciding his fate if there was ever a.
[1:14:40] Reason to put your hatred to bed.
[1:14:43] It would be right now. And even then he didn't want to
[1:14:45] do it. Scarlett's anxiety was also
[1:14:48] acknowledged to the jury at this point.
[1:14:50] Like I'm not being funny, but yeah, you're a murderer on trial
[1:14:54] to decide you're fit when it comes to how long you're going
[1:14:56] to be in prison. Whose anxiety wouldn't be shot
[1:14:59] through the fucking roof over this?
[1:15:01] And like I. Understand that these things do
[1:15:03] need to be acknowledged, but their murder victim had autism
[1:15:07] and anxiety too. They picked her out because she.
[1:15:10] Had these things because she was vulnerable, because she would be
[1:15:14] an easier target. So I think it would just be so
[1:15:17] incredibly unfair for Scarlett and Eddie to get any kind of
[1:15:20] lighter sentencing or a more lenient decision based on that.
[1:15:24] Throughout the trial, the two of them were even given fidget toys
[1:15:28] to play with. Now, I don't want to be that
[1:15:31] friend. That's not work enough, but just
[1:15:33] imagine the list of Brianna gruesome torturous injuries was
[1:15:38] being read out to a misty eyed court while the two killers are
[1:15:42] popping fidget toys in the corner.
[1:15:44] I just couldn't believe my fucking.
[1:15:45] Ears when my researchers told me that.
[1:15:47] But anyways, all the disclaimers about Scarlett and Eddie aside.
[1:15:52] It really wasn't looking good for them.
[1:15:53] There was a bunch of irrefutable evidence presented to the court.
[1:15:57] A bunch of Eddie's stuff had Brianna's blood on it, which
[1:16:00] obviously had all been confirmed by now.
[1:16:02] His shoes, his jacket. He tried to.
[1:16:04] Argue that all of this blood had gotten onto his clothes because
[1:16:09] he ran up to Brianna when Scarlett had stopped stabbing
[1:16:12] her. Because remember his story is
[1:16:13] that he was turned around for a pee and then when he looked
[1:16:16] again, Scarlett stabbing Brianna.
[1:16:18] So he said that he ran over to Brianna when Scarlett had left
[1:16:21] her alone. To see if she was still alive,
[1:16:23] or to see if he could help her, if he could save her.
[1:16:27] But soon, once he'd gotten the blood all over himself, he
[1:16:30] panicked and ran away because he didn't want to be involved.
[1:16:34] I mean, none of us believe that, but even if we did, that doesn't
[1:16:37] explain why the knife has Brianna's blood all over it.
[1:16:41] The pathologist that carried out her post mortem was even able to
[1:16:44] confirm that the knife found in Eddie's bedroom was a match to
[1:16:48] Brianna's wounds. Eddie said that he only went
[1:16:51] along with the fake Manchester Boy cover story at first.
[1:16:55] Because he was. Scared that Scarlett might come
[1:16:58] after him next. Which is funny because in court,
[1:17:02] Scarlett would say the exact same thing about him.
[1:17:05] Her. Version of events is that she
[1:17:08] walked away from Brianna and Eddie at 3:00 PM to go and meet
[1:17:11] this fake cocaine dealer that she'd been snapchatting all day
[1:17:15] when she heard a scream and when she spun around she saw Eddie
[1:17:19] stabbing Brianna. To death on his own.
[1:17:22] Scarlett started crying in the witness box, saying that she was
[1:17:25] scared that Eddie would kill her if she spoke out against him.
[1:17:29] She even wanted to help him cover up his tracks, and that's
[1:17:33] when she began texting Brianna as if she had no idea that she
[1:17:36] was dead. Scarlett Jenkinson also claims
[1:17:39] that she never once stabbed Brianna.
[1:17:41] She said that it was all Eddie. And honestly, it's actually
[1:17:44] really fucking hard to determine the exact truth here.
[1:17:48] Only three people know who stabbed Brianna and how many
[1:17:52] times each of them did it. One of those people is Brianna,
[1:17:56] who is no longer here to tell us.
[1:17:58] And if Tweedledum and Tweedledee won't back down from having
[1:18:01] opposing stories, then I'm not sure we can ever find out the
[1:18:05] exact. Truth of this case, the trial
[1:18:08] lasted almost 4 weeks. Throughout this time, both of
[1:18:12] the kids were being held in cells and they had compulsory
[1:18:16] psychiatry sessions. Not much of note happened with.
[1:18:19] Eddie during this time outside of court, but Scarlett was a
[1:18:23] different story her. Psychiatrist notes that said
[1:18:26] that she was thrilled by thoughts of violence and
[1:18:29] sometimes sexually aroused by it.
[1:18:32] Not only that, but while she'd been in her holding cells,
[1:18:35] Scarlett had actually managed to make another kill list.
[1:18:39] How the fuck did that get past them boys?
[1:18:41] Who's the officer in charge around here?
[1:18:43] All the names on Scarlett's kill list 2.0 were different guards
[1:18:48] and wardens that had been looking after her while she was
[1:18:51] in jail. Clearly, this girl has.
[1:18:54] Patterns The trial finally came to an end on December 20th,
[1:18:58] 2023, when Scarlett Jenkinson and Eddie Ratcliffe were found
[1:19:02] guilty of the murder of Brianna Jai.
[1:19:05] And though it couldn't be determined who did what to
[1:19:08] Brianna during the attack, the judge concluded that it didn't
[1:19:12] really matter when it came to their punishment.
[1:19:15] They were both equally responsible for what happened to
[1:19:18] their victim. The judge acknowledged that
[1:19:20] transphobia and homophobia were a contributing factor that
[1:19:24] further antagonized Eddie into killing Brianna.
[1:19:27] But despite this, neither Eddie or Scarlett were charged with a
[1:19:33] hate crime and I personally think think that is quite
[1:19:36] frankly despicable. Especially on the part of Eddie
[1:19:39] Ratcliffe, who had made numerous transphobic remarks whilst
[1:19:43] plotting Brianna's murder, from only ever referring to her as it
[1:19:48] to saying he wonders if she'll scream.
[1:19:51] Like a girl or a man. I personally think that the
[1:19:53] judge dropped the ball massively there.
[1:19:56] I'm honestly offended by such a decision and I think there
[1:20:00] should be way more outrage towards that.
[1:20:02] In my opinion, this was so clearly a Hick.
[1:20:05] Crime and Brianna's identity as a trans girl.
[1:20:08] Was so central to this whole. Thing Anyways, Eddie and
[1:20:13] Scarlett's sentencing hearing came in February 2024, when both
[1:20:17] of them were sentenced to life in prison, Eddie to serve a
[1:20:21] minimum of 20 years and Scarlett a minimum of 22.
[1:20:25] So strictly speaking, they could both be.
[1:20:28] Out a few years before their 40th birthdays.
[1:20:31] That is enough time to get a career to meet someone falling.
[1:20:35] Love start an entire life and a family, something that they both
[1:20:40] completely robbed Brianna of. On the court steps, Brianna's
[1:20:45] family read out statements about the murder and Brianna's memory.
[1:20:49] And I just want to read out a part of Esther's in particular
[1:20:52] because it was a statement not just full of sadness and and
[1:20:57] love for Brianna, but she advocated on behalf of the
[1:21:00] accused families too, which is quite something.
[1:21:04] She described Brianna as larger than life, as funny, witty and
[1:21:09] fearless. She thanked the dog walkers who
[1:21:12] found Brianna, the emergency services who responded to her,
[1:21:15] and the jury who found her killers guilty.
[1:21:18] But she closed saying this. Please have some empathy and
[1:21:22] compassion for the families of the young people convicted of
[1:21:26] this horrific crime. They too have lost a child and
[1:21:30] must live the rest of their lives knowing what their child
[1:21:33] has done. I think that is so powerful and
[1:21:36] it's truly admirable. From Esther.
[1:21:39] Vigils for Brianna were held across the entire UK.
[1:21:43] People everywhere were talking about her, making banners and
[1:21:47] and signs with her picture. On even the.
[1:21:50] Sam Smith did a beautiful tribute to Brianna during the
[1:21:53] London show at the O2, wearing a Halo specially made with
[1:21:58] Brianna's full name written among stars.
[1:22:01] Brianna's funeral was full of her favorite color, pink.
[1:22:05] White horses pulled her coffin while everyone else in
[1:22:09] attendance was also wearing pink.
[1:22:11] You know what? Usually I wouldn't go into this
[1:22:13] much detail but I think this next part is so beautiful.
[1:22:16] Brianna's body was cremated after the ceremony, which is
[1:22:21] maybe a bit more unusual. I'd say burials are more common
[1:22:24] in the UK, especially if it was a younger person that passed.
[1:22:28] But her mum Esther knew that Brianna would hate to be left
[1:22:32] alone. She knew exactly where Brianna
[1:22:34] would want to be, and that's in her bedroom at home.
[1:22:38] And so Esther gave Brianna's bedroom a makeover.
[1:22:41] She painted the walls with a fresh coat of pink paint.
[1:22:44] She bought the pink fluffy rug that Brianna had been nagging
[1:22:47] her for for ages. And she decorated one of the
[1:22:50] walls full of pictures of her daughter.
[1:22:52] Brianna's ashes sit in her bedroom now, in a little pink
[1:22:57] urn to match the the way that Brianna always used to wear pink
[1:23:00] pajamas at home. A month after Brianna passed
[1:23:04] away, her mom was taken aback with just how many cherry
[1:23:07] blossoms were blooming in their area.
[1:23:10] There were so many, all brighter than Esther had ever seen.
[1:23:15] They were so pink and similar to that on the day that the jury
[1:23:19] found Scarlett and Eddie guilty, the sky was also pink.
[1:23:23] And on the day that the judge gave them their life sentences,
[1:23:26] rainbows appeared in the sky. And I just.
[1:23:28] Want to take a second before we continue with the aftermath of
[1:23:32] this case to do a second charity Shout out because Esther and
[1:23:36] Alicia, Brianna's mom and her sister, actually made a charity
[1:23:40] in Brianna's memory. It's called Peace and Mind.
[1:23:43] The donations to Peace and Mind go towards teaching kids in
[1:23:47] school mindfulness to equip them with coping methods and
[1:23:52] techniques to combat negative emotions just like the anxiety
[1:23:56] that Brianna struggled with so badly.
[1:23:58] Of course, the link to Peace and Mind will be in the description.
[1:24:01] If you would like to find out more or donate in Brianna's
[1:24:05] memory, I have and I encourage all of you guys to do too.
[1:24:09] I also want to add here that Brianna's mom, Esther, has
[1:24:12] written a book called Under the Pink Sky that tells her and
[1:24:16] Brianna Brianna's story. We wrote today's episode using
[1:24:19] some extracts from the book as reference, but we made a
[1:24:23] conscious decision not to retell Esther's story.
[1:24:27] It's important to us that she's the one who tells the story of
[1:24:31] her and Brianna's lie. So if you're listening to this
[1:24:34] podcast episode after already having read Esther's book and
[1:24:37] you're thinking that we've left gaps in the story, it's because
[1:24:41] we believe that those parts are for the people who knew her
[1:24:45] deeply to tell. And if you do want to read more
[1:24:48] intimately about Brianna or the family's life or the personal
[1:24:52] elements of the case, then we do really recommend you go and
[1:24:55] check out Esther's book. Now to close.
[1:24:57] Off the episode, I just wanted to take a moment to talk about
[1:25:00] the way that the press handled Brianna's death because it was
[1:25:04] not right. When the news broke that Brianna
[1:25:08] had died, some media outlets began referring to her, using he
[1:25:12] and even dead naming her AKA using the name that she'd had
[1:25:16] when she lived as a boy, which is.
[1:25:18] So disrespectful. Surely these reporters were
[1:25:22] intentionally trying to dig out her dead name because she had
[1:25:25] been living openly as Brianna for a long time.
[1:25:28] By her death, everyone knew her as Brianna.
[1:25:31] No one was actively using any other pronouns or any other
[1:25:35] name. She was Brianna, she her and one
[1:25:38] of these publications I'm going to name and shame it was the
[1:25:41] Times. They even went so far as to
[1:25:45] publish the story originally calling her Brianna using she
[1:25:49] her pronouns, and then they went back in, revised the article and
[1:25:54] republished it, now using he him pronouns and Brianna's dead
[1:26:00] name. Which is fucking disgraceful.
[1:26:03] I think people like that deserve for karma to hit them like a
[1:26:06] truck. Like what do you?
[1:26:07] Gain from doing that, what do you?
[1:26:09] Gain from going back into that article and stripping Brianna of
[1:26:14] her identity. That is so grim, that is evil.
[1:26:18] In the wake of Brianna's death, there has been a campaign to
[1:26:21] amend the UK's Gender Recognition Act to allow
[1:26:25] transgender people who have died to be.
[1:26:27] Be legally remembered on their death certificates as the gender
[1:26:31] that they identified as while living while at the time of
[1:26:35] their death on Brianna's death certificate.
[1:26:37] She is gendered male and it's so painful to think about because
[1:26:41] you just know that it would be so upsetting to her.
[1:26:45] The government has responded to this, saying that they can't
[1:26:48] recognize people's new gender on the death certificate unless
[1:26:52] they had gone through the full process and acquired a gender
[1:26:55] recognition certificate before they died.
[1:26:59] But again, I'm going to say like, what do you get out of
[1:27:02] that? What harm would it honestly do
[1:27:04] to anyone to allow Brianna to be remembered as a girl on her
[1:27:09] death certificate? It's really not that big of a
[1:27:11] deal to. Others.
[1:27:13] But it is to trans people and to their loved ones.
[1:27:16] And as I filmed this episode today, only recently did our UK
[1:27:20] Supreme Court rule in favour of fascism to purposefully exclude
[1:27:24] trans women from what should be safe spaces for all women.
[1:27:29] They ruled that a person can only be legally defined as a
[1:27:32] woman if she biologically has a vagina.
[1:27:36] And now trans women could be excluded from single sex spaces
[1:27:40] like toilets and changing rooms. Not only excluded from the
[1:27:44] women's spaces, but forced to use the men's spaces.
[1:27:47] And quite frankly, that sounds a million times more dangerous for
[1:27:51] trans women than the quote UN quote danger that CIS women
[1:27:55] could experience from having trans women in our bathrooms
[1:27:58] with us, where they have been for decades without issue.
[1:28:01] Let me remind you, the group who led this whole campaign are
[1:28:05] called For Women Scotland. And they were celebrating on the
[1:28:09] steps. They were drinking Prosecco like
[1:28:11] it was some huge win for women. It's fucking not.
[1:28:14] It's honestly just insecure, bored women intellectually
[1:28:18] lacking the ability to act on real politics and instead
[1:28:22] turning the lives and the safety of trans women into a debate
[1:28:26] that puts them in even more danger.
[1:28:29] Trans women are constantly in danger.
[1:28:32] Yet some CIS women, and obviously men are obsessed with
[1:28:37] forcing this narrative down our throats that trans women are a
[1:28:40] threat to us. They are not.
[1:28:43] I should know. I have been sat covering cases
[1:28:46] of young women's murders for years, week in week out.
[1:28:49] And the biggest threat to CIS women?
[1:28:52] Assist men and they don't need to change their whole entire
[1:28:56] gender identity in order to attack us, to rape us, to murder
[1:29:02] us. If a man wants to hurt a woman,
[1:29:04] he will do it. He won't pretend to be trans in
[1:29:07] order to do. It on top.
[1:29:08] Of the constant political scapegoating, transgender people
[1:29:12] are over 4 times more likely than cisgender people to
[1:29:16] experience violent victimization, including rape,
[1:29:19] sexual assault, and even aggravated or simple assault.
[1:29:24] And guess what group? The majority of perpetrators of
[1:29:28] this are CIS men. The people who fill the
[1:29:32] bathrooms and the spaces, the changing rooms that trans women
[1:29:35] are being forced to use despite how dangerous the statistics
[1:29:40] show that to be. And honestly, why the justice
[1:29:43] system couldn't even class the murder of Brianna Jai?
[1:29:45] As a hate crime is beyond me if someone shouts gay and then
[1:29:51] murders. A member of the LGBTQ community
[1:29:55] that is a hit. Fuelled murder and you cannot
[1:29:57] convince me otherwise. And those two, Scarlett
[1:30:01] Jenkinson and Eddie Ratcliffe should not only be remembered as
[1:30:04] murderers but as transphobic ones too.
[1:30:07] Brianna was already such a strong figure in the trans
[1:30:10] community and she would have grown up to be 1 amazing woman.
[1:30:14] She'd already helped so many others just by giving advice
[1:30:18] online and having the strength to exist as herself in a time
[1:30:22] where. Trans lives are in so much
[1:30:24] danger just like Brianna's was. We need to do more to protect
[1:30:28] them, not exclude and reject them the way that the Supreme
[1:30:32] Court ruling and the right wing. Media would have you believe our
[1:30:35] trans siblings are facing enough dangers as it is, dangers like
[1:30:39] Scarlett Jenkinson and Eddie Ratcliffe.
[1:30:42] But enough about them. Let's end this with Brianna's
[1:30:45] moment. We will always remember Breanna
[1:30:49] Jai as a truly iconic beauty, full of bravery and kindness.
[1:30:55] She will live on. Forever in the way that we
[1:30:57] celebrate and remember her. She always wanted to be famous
[1:31:01] and to me, she always will be. Thank you so, so much everyone
[1:31:04] for tuning into this episode of Outlaw Podcast.
[1:31:07] It was a very, very heavy 1. So I just want to check in.

[1:31:14] And I had to keep pausing to like compose myself throughout,
[1:31:18] but I really hope that this episode touched your heart as
[1:31:22] much as looking into this case touched all of our hearts here
[1:31:25] at Outlook. I'm actually getting a little
[1:31:26] bit emotional now. Anyway, back to YouTube mode.
