ACT 2: In our previous episode, the rivalry between Captain Tibor and Dov over Inga's love intensified, culminating in a brutal fight that Dov emerged victorious, leaving the Captain humiliated in front of his men. Meanwhile, Avrum's oldest daughter Devorah has made a new friend, single mother Clara, who's offered Devorah a babysitting job, while Eden, who faced discrimination in the school band due to their Jewish heritage, is being tutored by family friend Fenric in hopes of securing a spot at the prestigious Franz Liszt school of music in Budapest for a special summer program. And lastly, Avrum and his eldest son, Isaac, visit Avrum's father, Moshe, when Isaac makes a shocking discovery — the Hungarian police are about to forcefully enter Moshe's house. ____ LOVE & DARKNESS is a multi-generational saga tracking the triumphs and tragedies of a large, powerful Hungarian Jewish family during WWII. Based on an incredible true story. A Hungarian Rabbi, Avrum Katz, and his family face a relentless storm of anti-Semitic oppression in 1941 Hungary. When their lives are shattered by a secret revealed and a shocking act of violence, they're thrust into a world of dark secrets and impossible choices. As they struggle for survival on the brutal frontlines of war, 'Love & Darkness' is an epic tale of family, sacrifice, and the enduring strength of the human spirit. ____ Presented by Nomono and recorded exclusively with Nomono Sound Capsules. [9:20] Speaker 17: Your concern is touching, but I am not your concern.
[9:24] Speaker 16: You know my feelings go beyond concern.
[9:27] Speaker 17: And you know I'm in love with someone else, which.
[9:30] Speaker 2: Strikes Captain t Wore like a dagger in the heart.
[9:34] Speaker 16: You talk of this love as if it has any

[9:49] Speaker 17: In two years, I'll be working in a hospital with

[10:28] Speaker 2: of golden sunlight accent an isolated meadow of lush green
[10:33] Speaker 2: somewhere in the Hungarian countryside. Over this, in the tall grass,
[10:37] Speaker 2: we hear the moans of passionate sex. The camera finds
[10:41] Speaker 2: Dove in inga, their bodies intertwined and writhing under a blanket.
[10:46] Speaker 2: After climax, they settle into a post sex calm INGA
[10:51] Speaker 2: lays her head on his chest, and they're two stared

[11:06] Speaker 2: Dove sighs, puffs out his chest.
[11:09] Speaker 17: Not enough for you to confront him. He knows I'm yours.
[11:12] Speaker 10: The matter settled, and your father how long before that
[11:18] Speaker 10: matters settled?
[11:19] Speaker 17: My father is an old magyarra's deep opinions of Jews.

[11:50] Speaker 12: Will you go?
[11:51] Speaker 6: No?
[11:53] Speaker 11: What needed to be said was said years ago.
[11:55] Speaker 18: Boy Am, your mother was sick, you yourself said. At
[11:59] Speaker 18: many times she'd have conversations with the walls or sleep
[12:02] Speaker 18: in the basement for days. It was the sickness that
[12:06] Speaker 18: put the gun in her hand, not your father.
[12:09] Speaker 11: But it was his infidelity that pulled the trigger.
[12:12] Speaker 18: And now he seeks your forgiveness, as you might one
[12:16] Speaker 18: day seek from Dove if you turn your back on him.
[12:20] Speaker 11: Perhaps, but Mosha doesn't only seek forgiveness in his letter,
[12:26] Speaker 11: he seeks advice.
[12:28] Speaker 2: The clop and winnie of a horse approaching. Avram's face
[12:31] Speaker 2: turns pale as he sees through the window. It's Dove, sorry,

[12:43] Speaker 11: in my house.
[12:44] Speaker 2: Interior Cat's Family Barn. A few moments later, Dove ties
[12:49] Speaker 2: down the horse's reins and tends to it. After a beat,
[12:52] Speaker 2: he realizes there's someone else in the barn with him.
[12:55] Speaker 2: Dove slowly turns around to find Avram standing there, his
[12:58] Speaker 2: face inscrutable. Dove knows what's coming next, but Avram struggles
[13:04] Speaker 2: to find the right words. A long beat of silence
[13:07] Speaker 2: broken by.
[13:09] Speaker 10: I intend to marry her.
[13:10] Speaker 7: Papa. I'm sorry.
[13:11] Speaker 11: I made beef for supper. The plate's still warm.
[13:16] Speaker 2: If you hurry, Avrom quickly retreats out of the barn.
[13:19] Speaker 2: Dove opens his mouth to speak, but then closes it wordlessly.
[13:25] Speaker 2: Exterior Cat's Family Barn. Continuously, Avrim exits, looks up to heaven,

[13:49] Speaker 2: front of the orchestra room. Lacey scrutinizes Eden from head
[13:53] Speaker 2: to toe and notices something that disturbs her. She and
[13:57] Speaker 2: Eden are wearing the same red socks with yellow flowers
[14:01] Speaker 2: as part of their skirt outfits. Eden enters the orchestra class.
[14:06] Speaker 2: Interior orchestra room, Christian High School continues. The students slowly
[14:11] Speaker 2: trickle in and take their seats.
[14:13] Speaker 1: Such lesarg from aspiring musicians, take your seats.
[14:19] Speaker 2: The students uncase their instruments.
[14:21] Speaker 1: A debate rages in the high holds about Bach's sweets.
[14:27] Speaker 1: Is it the substance of his heart's passion or the
[14:30] Speaker 1: pure calculations from the rhythms of a didactic mathematician?
[14:35] Speaker 7: No dead hands today box garrant in C major.
[14:42] Speaker 2: Frank needs a complicated piece in with the piano. Then
[14:45] Speaker 2: the students follow, sounding marvelous angle on Lacy blowing into
[14:50] Speaker 2: her flute. Distracted, she repeatedly peers over to Ed, examining
[14:55] Speaker 2: her socks to confirm they are indeed the same exact there,
[15:00] Speaker 2: How could she have the same pair of socks as
[15:02] Speaker 2: a jew. Her shoulder takes note of Lacey's deficiency in
[15:06] Speaker 2: concentration and rumbles.
[15:08] Speaker 7: Over pay attention flutes enough.
[15:11] Speaker 2: The music ties out.
[15:13] Speaker 7: Lacy, you're overhanging the keys.
[15:17] Speaker 8: I wasn't, hair teacher.
[15:19] Speaker 7: So my ears deceive me. Perhaps I am mistaken.
[15:24] Speaker 1: Perhaps you are a prodigy equal to Lily Bollinger, or
[15:28] Speaker 1: believe me or franz List himself.
[15:31] Speaker 2: Lacey shakes her head.
[15:32] Speaker 7: No stead.
[15:34] Speaker 2: Lacey nervously rises out of her chair.
[15:38] Speaker 1: If the emissary from frange List were here in this
[15:41] Speaker 1: very room, would he select.
[15:44] Speaker 2: You for a scholarship? No, hair teacher, no.
[15:50] Speaker 7: Eden cats. Based on your performance, would you be chosen?
[15:56] Speaker 2: I can only hope, hair teacher minor shuckles from the
[15:59] Speaker 2: other side. Uts be close, blurts like they pick a jew.
[16:05] Speaker 1: More inward timbre of the D string and almost avoiding
[16:09] Speaker 1: the open a. Today your play was precise and unerring.
[16:15] Speaker 2: Then hair Shulder maneuvers her face to face with Lacey.
[16:18] Speaker 7: Extend your palms face down.
[16:21] Speaker 2: Lacey slowly does this. Frank realizes hair Shoulder's intentions, stands defiantly.
[16:27] Speaker 1: Hair teacher, sit down, hair Farink, You're only here at
[16:31] Speaker 1: my whimen.
[16:32] Speaker 2: Farank deflats into his chair. Hair Shulner turns to Eden,
[16:36] Speaker 2: hands her the conductor's were.
[16:37] Speaker 1: Tom ten wraps on the knuckles, a lesson she'll not
[16:41] Speaker 1: soon forget coming from you.
[16:43] Speaker 2: Eden's frozen strike Now.
[16:47] Speaker 17: Look they're wearing the same socks.
[16:49] Speaker 2: The students check the confirm.
[16:51] Speaker 7: Enough chatterboxing, Eden commence.
[16:55] Speaker 2: Eden tears up, looks to Farank, who nads his approval.
[17:00] Speaker 2: Eden strikes Lacey's knuckles once, twice a third time, as
[17:06] Speaker 2: Lacey's eyes register the pain harder. Eden raises the baton
[17:10] Speaker 2: above her head, ready to pounce, but then freezes.
[17:16] Speaker 7: I cannot do it, hair teacher, complete the punishment or
[17:20] Speaker 7: be expelled.
[17:22] Speaker 2: Eden considers this, but then lowers the baton and tosses
[17:25] Speaker 2: it on the desk in front of her.
[17:27] Speaker 1: Miscats, you are dismissed for the remainder of the semester.
[17:34] Speaker 5: Please, hair teacher, what about my audition?
[17:36] Speaker 1: Auditions are held for students enrolled an orchestra. Miklos seventeen
[17:42] Speaker 1: lashes an additional ten for the jois's disobedience.
[17:47] Speaker 7: Count aloud, dude.
[17:49] Speaker 2: He glos, rises, wipes the baton, and strikes Lacey mercilessly.
[17:53] Speaker 2: One two, three haunting shack of the baton connected over
[18:00] Speaker 2: Lacey's knuckles as all we years. Eden packs up her
[18:03] Speaker 2: chillo Before Eaton exits, Lacey glaars daggers at her an

[27:02] Speaker 11: If a mind of violence is what you've learned from
[27:05] Speaker 11: those Zionist friends of yours.
[27:06] Speaker 14: Unlike you, those friends, and I have walked the streets
[27:09] Speaker 14: of Krakau, Warsaw and Luds, Jews forced into ghettos like animals,
[27:15] Speaker 14: thousands living on top of one another, slummed within a
[27:17] Speaker 14: few square blocks.
[27:19] Speaker 11: That's Poland.

[27:23] Speaker 11: This is how it starts.
[27:25] Speaker 14: First, it's shot, closings and beatings, and then it's ghettos
[27:29] Speaker 14: and yellow stars.
[27:30] Speaker 2: Allow me to end this before it begins.
[27:33] Speaker 11: By killing him, you will ensure that it does begin.

[27:41] Speaker 2: steps into his face. It's intimidating.
[27:44] Speaker 11: I may not have walked down the streets of Krackou
[27:47] Speaker 11: and Luds, but I've stood face to face with my enemy,
[27:51] Speaker 11: close enough to feel his warm blood run down my arm,
[27:55] Speaker 11: close enough to see the look in his eyes as
[27:57] Speaker 11: he wondered how much deeper. I drive my bayonet into
[28:00] Speaker 11: his stomach.
[28:02] Speaker 2: Which frightens Wolf and freezes the rest of the room.
[28:06] Speaker 11: You know nothing about killing man Hushka and I pray

[28:54] Speaker 2: long pointed look at himself in the mirror, eyes moving

[29:02] Speaker 2: raises his left arm, revealing two inch long scars appearing

[29:14] Speaker 2: sharp edge, digs into his skin, cutting a third mark
[29:17] Speaker 2: underneath the two previous ones. His hand shakes, his blood
[29:21] Speaker 2: oozes from the self made wound. This action taken by
[29:25] Speaker 2: t Boar seems to be some measure of self inflicted penance.
[29:30] Speaker 2: When he's finished, te Boar goes back to staring at

[38:29] Speaker 11: Must be hard finding one who can actually do housework.
[38:33] Speaker 2: Mosha ignores this as he presents an empty glass to
[38:36] Speaker 2: Aram Aram nods, yes.
[38:39] Speaker 6: Ice, no fine, I'll call the Minister of Trade and
[38:44] Speaker 6: Commerce regarding your problem with the butcher's shop. He's sympathetic
[38:48] Speaker 6: to Jewish businesses in the villages.
[38:51] Speaker 11: Thank you, don't thank me yet?
[38:54] Speaker 3: The wind is changing into Budapest.
[38:57] Speaker 7: Or did you not read my letter?
[39:00] Speaker 11: Build conscience, wrong motion.
[39:01] Speaker 2: Delivers uh whatever, Look if he hans Avrom his drink.
[39:04] Speaker 6: Parliaments considered lengthening forced labor units terms of service from
[39:08] Speaker 6: three months to two years, banning marriage and fornication between
[39:14] Speaker 6: Jews and non.
[39:15] Speaker 11: Jews for one thousand years. This country has been tough
[39:18] Speaker 11: on Jews, from the twelve hundreds in Ladislaus the fourth
[39:21] Speaker 11: to the White Terrors twenty years ago. Of course, always
[39:24] Speaker 11: rights itself.
[39:25] Speaker 6: But never enough for them to consider us true Hungarians.
[39:29] Speaker 6: The council's drafting a list of grievances for President Horthy,
[39:32] Speaker 6: and I'd like you to be a part of it.
[39:35] Speaker 6: The neologue perspective.
[39:38] Speaker 11: The city is rooted in Neologian rabbis. Why me, you're
[39:42] Speaker 11: my son, Hushika.
[39:45] Speaker 6: There was a time when these hands fed you, clothed you,
[39:48] Speaker 6: and bathed you. I was God in your eyes.
[39:53] Speaker 11: I remember I was still a child. But children grow up,
[39:59] Speaker 11: and I realized you were not God. You were just
[40:02] Speaker 11: the son of a goat farmer who sees the people
[40:04] Speaker 11: of his life in terms of their value in getting
[40:07] Speaker 11: him what he wants. You don't care about Jewish rights.
[40:11] Speaker 11: Two years for labor units instead of three months means
[40:14] Speaker 11: less cheap labor for your factories. Interracial fornication forces you
[40:19] Speaker 11: to hire your whares instead of publicly fawning over them.
[40:22] Speaker 6: Doesn't it wear you out believing you're so much better
[40:27] Speaker 6: than everyone else? Was your life so damaged?
[40:30] Speaker 2: With me as a father? Avrom won't even touch this.
[40:34] Speaker 2: Don't turn to blind eye because you hate me.
[40:37] Speaker 6: The war on Jews is coming to Hungary and it
[40:40] Speaker 6: will be the end of us.
[40:43] Speaker 11: What would you have me do with three hot blooded sons,
[40:46] Speaker 11: one of whom already draws his knife at the slightest whim.
[40:50] Speaker 11: How would they survives to war?
[40:53] Speaker 6: When you were a child, you would always hide behind
[40:56] Speaker 6: your mother. As a young man, that was God and
[40:59] Speaker 6: the Yamaka. Now you hide behind your son's.
[41:06] Speaker 2: Coward exterior Crotia Street day Closeness sign Crosier Street pull
[41:12] Speaker 2: out to find a hub of activity as residents freak
[41:15] Speaker 2: with their favorite shops and cafes. We're looking through the
[41:18] Speaker 2: store window of the Croatia Street hair salon. Inside, we
[41:21] Speaker 2: see Devora speaking with the redheaded female salon own her fifties.
[41:26] Speaker 2: By their animated hand gestures, we gather at some type
[41:29] Speaker 2: of negotiation. The salon owner extends her hand for Devora
[41:33] Speaker 2: to accept terms, but Devora defiantly shakes her head no.
[41:38] Speaker 2: The female salon owner shrugs then turns away, while Devora
[41:42] Speaker 2: exits the salon frustrated. As Devora gathers herself, she notices
[41:47] Speaker 2: something in the storefront window of a travel agency next
[41:50] Speaker 2: door to the salon that catches her eye. Whatever it is,
[41:54] Speaker 2: it seems to hold her attention for a moment, until
[41:57] Speaker 2: on her peripheral she spots a woman, Clara thirty Aryan features,
[42:03] Speaker 2: exiting the market carrying a large bag of groceries while
[42:07] Speaker 2: trying to discipline her two unruly children, a boy, Hans
[42:12] Speaker 2: and girl Haika, eight and five, respectively. Hans is disabled,
[42:17] Speaker 2: wearing a lead brace on his right leg. Devora runs
[42:20] Speaker 2: over Hans.
[42:22] Speaker 8: No here, I can carry.
[42:24] Speaker 2: That back, Devor reaches out. Clara considers, then hands it over.
[42:28] Speaker 8: Oh here, darling, thank you.
[42:30] Speaker 12: I'm Clara.
[42:31] Speaker 15: This is Hans and Hika Devora.
[42:34] Speaker 8: How far are you going?
[42:35] Speaker 15: Two streets over the Hotel Lennox. If it's not an
[42:37] Speaker 15: imposition none whatsoever, it's on my.
[42:40] Speaker 2: Way and carry her Hotel Lennox Suite day Devora. Clara
[42:45] Speaker 2: and her children enter the hotel suite. Clara turns to Hans.
[42:50] Speaker 12: Read your sister, distrivil Peter.
[42:52] Speaker 2: Hans grabs a book from the coffee table and begins
[42:54] Speaker 2: reading in the bedroom. Hans ushers his sister into the bedroom.
[43:00] Speaker 2: Clara rules her eyes.
[43:02] Speaker 8: My youngest brother and sister or five year old twins.
[43:06] Speaker 8: It's like wrangling cats.
[43:07] Speaker 15: Mine are restless. We've been moving around quite a bit.
[43:11] Speaker 15: My husband's an engineer. He was hired by the Hungarian
[43:14] Speaker 15: telephone company. So we left Munich.
[43:16] Speaker 8: I love Munich, walking along the es at night. You
[43:22] Speaker 8: speak German.
[43:23] Speaker 12: Why were you in Munich?
[43:25] Speaker 8: My brothers and I spent two summers with our uncle
[43:27] Speaker 8: Saul and his family.
[43:29] Speaker 12: Are they still there, No, somewhere in Denmark. We left
[43:33] Speaker 12: just in time.
[43:34] Speaker 8: Are you Jewish?
[43:35] Speaker 15: We had many Jewish friends and our podiatrist was Jewish.
[43:40] Speaker 15: Do you work?
[43:41] Speaker 8: I cut hair at Rosie's salon.
[43:43] Speaker 15: Oh good, I was thinking about coming in and getting
[43:46] Speaker 15: a pompadour.
[43:47] Speaker 8: A pompadour wouldn't fit your face. It wouldn't fit mine either.
[43:51] Speaker 8: We're cursed with flat cheekbones. I'd make you look like
[43:55] Speaker 8: a star Valley Rods or Greta Garbo. You really enjoy
[44:01] Speaker 8: what you'd do, I'd enjoy it more. At the salon
[44:04] Speaker 8: owner gave me another day's work.
[44:06] Speaker 15: I used to be an accountant's assistant. Now I've mastered
[44:09] Speaker 15: the art of doing nothing. I miss being important.
[44:15] Speaker 8: I've always been pretty, never important. Why not go back
[44:20] Speaker 8: to work? A German woman with high credentials is like
[44:24] Speaker 8: Queen Sheba and Hungary.
[44:25] Speaker 12: What would I do with my children?
[44:27] Speaker 8: Pay a house made to watch them.
[44:30] Speaker 12: Perhaps one who speaks German?
[44:34] Speaker 15: Me you, Oh, you're perfect, and I'd pay you generously.
[44:39] Speaker 15: Do say yes to Bora. I like your nature. You
[44:41] Speaker 15: speak your mind with no restraint.
[44:44] Speaker 8: That's probably why I'm not married.
[44:47] Speaker 2: As the two have a good laugh. Interior Mosha's study night.
[44:52] Speaker 2: Avram glances out into the hallway watching Mosha on the
[44:55] Speaker 2: telephones long enough to see Mosha ping ponging between nodding,
[44:59] Speaker 2: listening repeatedly smelling his palms. Avram then turns his attention
[45:05] Speaker 2: back into the study. His eyes locate a stretch of
[45:07] Speaker 2: carpet underfoot in the room center. This parcel of rug
[45:12] Speaker 2: has some special significance on Mosha. He hangs up and
[45:16] Speaker 2: enters to find Avram's eyes and attention fixated on the carpet.
[45:20] Speaker 2: Mosha knows the what and why of Avram's fascination. He sighs,
[45:26] Speaker 2: partly to shake Aram out of his reverie, partly out
[45:29] Speaker 2: of utter disappointment that he's still touched by this memory.
[45:33] Speaker 6: Ah, it's done. The minister sounded optimistic, But from my
[45:39] Speaker 6: lips to God's ears, it helps that we switched your
[45:42] Speaker 6: business license to a Christian name a few years ago.
[45:46] Speaker 6: He'll contact you in a few days.
[45:48] Speaker 2: Thank you.
[45:49] Speaker 6: I know it must infuriate you to be in debt to.
[45:52] Speaker 11: A man like me as much as it pleases you
[45:56] Speaker 11: to know I am.
[45:57] Speaker 2: In your debt. An then turns his attention back to

[46:21] Speaker 2: she is the source of the rift between father and grandfather.
[46:25] Speaker 2: Isaac walks down the hall, examining other family photographs hanging
[46:28] Speaker 2: on the wall, Avrom with his brothers in motion in
[46:32] Speaker 2: front of one of Mosa's first furniture stores, Avrom with
[46:35] Speaker 2: his mother eating ice cream on the beach. Isaac continues
[46:39] Speaker 2: down the hall and enters the master bedroom interior Mosh's
[46:44] Speaker 2: Master bedroom, Mosh's House continuous. Isaac enters eyes widen It's

[47:21] Speaker 2: home from World War One. He's in uniform adorned with medals,
[47:26] Speaker 2: Mosha's arms proudly draped around him. Isaac realizes, despite their animosity,
[47:33] Speaker 2: Mosha still cares for Avrom. Deeply. All of a sudden,
[47:37] Speaker 2: screeching tires skids to a halt. Outside, Isaac moves to
[47:41] Speaker 2: the window sees police vehicles parking in front of the house,
[47:45] Speaker 2: an officer streaming through the gate.
[47:47] Speaker 6: No.
[47:48] Speaker 2: Isaac's face is full of fear, absolutely terrified as the
[47:52] Speaker 2: police are about to enter his grandfather's house. And we
