## Transcript

[0:15] Hello and welcome to More Than Headlines, your weekly anime news
[0:17] podcast powered by Audio Technica, made by Australians for
[0:21] global citizens.
[0:22] I'm your extremely humble host, Brendan White, AKA the salt
[0:25] and pepper senpai.
[0:26] And joining me in the studio, my trusted co host and rival, everyone's
[0:29] favorite anime menace, Ms.
[0:31] Courtney Smith.
[0:32] How the bloody hell are you?
[0:34] I'm good, how are you?
[0:36] I am doing fantastic.
[0:38] We are back here for episode 21 of the MTH podcast.
[0:42] It is October 26th at approximately 11:29 in the a.m.
[0:48] the year be flying by.
[0:51] It really is.
[0:51] I feel like the fact that we've, we're already up to episode
[0:56] 21.
[0:57] So we've had, we've discussed.
[1:00] Was it like three seasons of anime now?
[1:04] Almost.
[1:04] Yeah, yeah, we've been working it through, working it well.
[1:07] And the good thing is like you see most statistics about podcast
[1:12] startups is they rarely get beyond three episodes.
[1:15] So look at us, we are blazing a very aggressive and fun yet welcoming
[1:20] path here with more than headlines.
[1:22] So yeah, thanks to each and every one of you that has checked
[1:25] out the podcast in audio based or video based form.
[1:28] Because it means the world to little guys like ourselves.
[1:32] Yeah, I'm just a little guy.
[1:35] Just a little guy.
[1:36] Just a little guy with a bit of a menace streak.
[1:38] But we wouldn't change you.
[1:40] But should we do what we do every week, Courtney, and jump into
[1:44] some news?
[1:45] Let's read the news.
[1:46] You like the news.
[1:49] Oh Christian Bale, you never cease to move my organs.
[1:52] But what's the first bit of news?
[1:55] We'll leave that right there.
[1:57] Yep, not going to unpack that.
[1:59] So the first bit of news.
[2:01] That's exciting.
[2:02] But also I'm feeling a bit weird about it.
[2:05] Kodansha has expanded its online manga distribution service
[2:08] outside of the US to include Australia, New Zealand, Singapore
[2:12] and Canada.
[2:13] With this announcement, Kodansha have stated that they hope
[2:15] to expand to even more territory soon.
[2:19] Currently the manga reading app features over four titles which
[2:23] includes 60 simul pub series including Blue Lock, Rent a Girlfriend
[2:27] and A Love too.
[2:29] Captivating.
[2:31] So this app called K Manga, it came out last year, earlier this
[2:37] year and was basically us only.
[2:40] And my issue is.
[2:42] So while it does add a bunch of great series to the digital manga
[2:46] serialization lineup, so obviously we've got Viz and Shonen
[2:50] Jump.
[2:52] Unlike those apps, it doesn't use a subscription service system,
[2:56] but instead makes users pay for points which are then used to
[3:00] buy chapters.
[3:02] And the even bigger issue here is that not all chapters cost the
[3:08] same amount of points, which is really disappointing.
[3:11] I'm 100% with you on this.
[3:14] It is super predatory and I really hate this way of death by
[3:20] a thousand cutting to sort of fans of these manga that are desperate
[3:24] to jump ahead and read the chapters because you are penalized
[3:27] for reading ahead for the most part, like they will have because
[3:31] it's long standing.
[3:32] You get all these initial ones included for free or a couple to
[3:35] get you on the hook and then they're paying for chapters based
[3:39] off these points or credit based systems.
[3:41] I hate apps that do this type of stuff because it is gross and
[3:45] it gets super, super expensive.
[3:47] Like I remember off the back of solo leveling at the start of
[3:51] the year, I'm like, I need to read this.
[3:53] I want all of this world.
[3:55] And I think I ended up honing up maybe 90 bucks to just read my
[3:58] way through this in the span of like a week because I didn't want
[4:01] to wait for my little credit refresh to happen every month or
[4:04] whatever else.
[4:05] So it's really gross.
[4:07] I know businesses, their main goal is to make money because that's
[4:11] how businesses stay around and succeed.
[4:13] But this ain't it, dog.
[4:15] Like, yeah, pivot to the, to the Viz or the Shonen app based monthly
[4:19] subscription service because for the most part once people are
[4:22] subscribed, they're going to hang around for a long time where
[4:25] this feels like they're just sort of trying to do that dash for
[4:27] cash and get out.
[4:28] Like they've got you, you've paid for your credits or your points
[4:31] and then you might disappear because of the negative impact of
[4:34] this situation you're experiencing.
[4:36] So yeah, I'm, I'm not big on.
[4:37] This one and I think it's.
[4:39] You know, we had that interview with Brett like a few weeks
[4:43] back and we kind of discussed this kind of subscription based servicing.
[4:47] And while even for subscription based services, I think
[4:52] the reason that they work and the reason that they're good is that
[4:55] you kind of know like you're paying for the experience to watch.
[4:59] Right.
[4:59] And to have access to a lot of things at once.
[5:02] I think if you want to pay the extra to get the physical media and
[5:06] get the physical copies, that's okay.
[5:08] But I feel like what kmonger is doing is you're paying that kind
[5:13] of premium to have a physical copy, but you're not getting it.
[5:16] And of course there's no guarantee that it's going to be staying
[5:19] around.
[5:19] On that I completely agree.
[5:21] And I hope that the anti marketing campaign for this is not
[5:25] okay manga because yeah, I'm not about this life, but something
[5:30] that I am about.
[5:31] Courtney.
[5:32] Last week we reported that Look Back is in Australian cinemas
[5:35] from October 24th through to the 27th.
[5:38] As this episode comes out, maybe run to the cinema and you still
[5:41] might catch it in time.
[5:42] And while we're happy it has a cinematic release here in Australia,
[5:45] as I just mentioned this, for a very, very short period of time,
[5:48] in fact, Sunday is the last day, so get out while you can once
[5:52] you're done listening to this episode.
[5:53] But there is some good news.
[5:54] Look Back is coming to Amazon prime video globally on November
[5:58] 7th.
[5:59] So if you cannot make it to the cinema, check it out in a couple
[6:01] of weeks in the comfort of your own home.
[6:03] And obviously for us Aussies and Kiwis, this means that the film
[6:07] will be available from November 8th on Amazon PR Prime Video.
[6:10] Due to the kind of time zone differences there, we're still unsure
[6:15] currently whether it will be included for free on the platform
[6:18] or if you'll need to pay a little bit extra to buy or rent the
[6:22] movie.
[6:23] Honestly, I think because it's a new release it should be coming
[6:27] out for free.
[6:28] But we'll, we'll double check, we'll report back on that.
[6:31] Yeah, I'm, I'm not going to be at all surprised if they say, yep,
[6:34] you've got to pay $20 to rent or you know, 23 to own.
[6:38] Because Amazon is doing this more and more regularly with their
[6:42] films that they are getting early access to in parentheses.
[6:45] So we'll see.
[6:47] But I want to say first and foremost, this is great.
[6:50] We're very excited because when we first reported on look back,
[6:53] we weren't sure when, if or how this was going to get to Australian
[6:56] shores.
[6:57] And knowing that we had and are having a cinematic release currently
[7:01] and then two weeks later it's going to be dropping on, you know,
[7:04] the prime video streaming platform for people to check out
[7:07] at home.
[7:07] That's awesome.
[7:09] I went and checked it out at the cinema on Thursday.
[7:11] I really, really enjoyed it.
[7:13] It was me and I think three other people in the cinema, but we
[7:16] had a great old time.
[7:17] Three, yeah, it was, that was the disheartening part, I guess.
[7:21] Like me and three other people were in this cinema.
[7:24] I was a solo viewer as another solo.
[7:26] And then there was a couple of mates that were there too.
[7:29] And it wasn't in like the tiny 20 seat cinema.
[7:32] Like it was in one of the bigger cinema cinema room.
[7:36] So it did feel a little empty.
[7:38] But it was also nice to be able to soak this up in Silence without
[7:43] the noise of, you know, kids chattering or copious amounts of
[7:46] snacks getting chewed on.
[7:47] So I'll share my more in depth thoughts on look back in what we've
[7:51] been watching in, you know, a few minutes time.
[7:53] But yeah, enjoyed it.
[7:56] I'm planning on seeing it tomorrow because I've just had the
[8:00] most hectic week and tomorrow I said to my husband, I was like,
[8:05] before food shopping, it's an hour long.
[8:07] We're gonna go.
[8:08] We're just gonna go watch it.
[8:10] Even if I'm walking around the shops the rest of the day with tears
[8:12] in my eyes, I'll do it.
[8:15] But I am so glad that it's getting kind of an at home slash
[8:19] streaming release really quickly.
[8:22] I feel like the industry has just gotten better with this kind
[8:25] of thing with making things available globally and I think from
[8:31] now on I kind of expect this almost.
[8:35] But did you cry, Brendan, when you watched it?
[8:37] I did, yes.
[8:39] Oh my God.
[8:40] I.
[8:41] But I cry most things.
[8:42] I got teary eyed watching Negative Positive Angular this morning.
[8:46] So like, yeah, nothing is safe from my salty discharge.
[8:50] Oh God.
[8:51] Okay, let's.
[8:53] We're gonna move on to the next headline.
[8:55] We are.
[8:55] Before I get canceled.
[8:57] Yeah.
[8:58] What is the final headline here, Cody?
[9:00] In some of the best news I have heard all week, Crunchyroll
[9:05] is adding Girls Band Cry to ITS platform on November 6th.
[9:10] All 13 episodes will be available for streaming immediately.
[9:15] This makes me so happy.
[9:17] The series originally aired in April of this year, but wasn't legally
[9:21] available outside of Japan until late May.
[9:23] And even then it was only available in Indonesia initially.
[9:27] Only in August did Toei animation make the anime available
[9:30] digitally in the us so it is a weird, weird licensing journey that
[9:35] Girls Band Cry has gone on, but I'm happy that it's getting released
[9:40] to the greater masses.
[9:41] I feel like Toei really had this in their iron grip and I don't
[9:48] know why they were reluctant, I guess, to kind of export it, but
[9:55] they were.
[9:55] But I'm glad that we're finally getting this anime after
[9:58] seven months.
[9:59] It aired seven months ago.
[10:02] I've been waiting seven months to watch this show.
[10:05] I just want to see cute girls playing music.
[10:08] And you will see all that and more because Girls Bang Cry is great.
[10:12] I did watch it via other means because I needed to.
[10:16] And it's a great story.
[10:18] And I'm curious regarding the licensing.
[10:20] And this is just me spitballing and hypothesizing.
[10:23] I wonder if it's to do maybe with the music licensing because
[10:26] they do sort of bleed this into like a real life band that's
[10:30] touring and promoting now too.
[10:31] So maybe there is some regional based licensing issues and
[10:34] that's why it's been such a weird rollout, but overall super
[10:39] duper happy.
[10:40] I've been singing girls band criers praises for the last few months
[10:43] and seeing it finally end up on the major streamer hopefully means
[10:48] more eyes on this fantastic anime.
[10:50] And also wanted to shout out to Momoka and Subaru who are the
[10:53] best girls from this anime in my opinion.
[10:57] I've just seen so many people in the anime industry and community
[11:02] talking about this show and only hearing extremely good things,
[11:07] so I've been very jealous that I am a well behaved anime enjoyer
[11:15] because I haven't been able to watch it.
[11:16] But I'm so excited.
[11:18] What did we say November 6?
[11:20] So it'll be November 7 for Australia and Aotearoa.
[11:25] Yeah, fans, they can watch this all in one day, binge it and
[11:29] then go straight into look back like a day or so later.
[11:32] So you've got that sort of first, second week of November settled
[11:35] here with girls being cry and then look back just double feature
[11:38] it.
[11:38] Just good times.
[11:40] That sounds so fun.
[11:41] Actually, let's talk about on the Horizon Rapid Fire news presented
[11:47] by Otaku Box, the only anime box with scale figures, voting and
[11:51] achoo.
[11:53] My God, Courtney.
[11:54] The spiciness in my inbox is I feel like it's hit a.
[11:58] Hit a threshold.
[11:59] But then I'm told that I'm completely wrong because it just
[12:02] constantly escalates every week when I get an email from Lizard
[12:06] Otaku Box like it is.
[12:08] It is saucy.
[12:08] If you're looking for a bit of morning spice in your inbox.
[12:12] Yeah, be sure to sign up and subscribe to the Otaku Box because
[12:16] Liz and the team are bringing it.
[12:18] Yeah, all of their kind of like original figures I think are
[12:24] really, really cool.
[12:24] And while I don't have enough room on my shelves right now for
[12:29] their saucy original figures, when I get a new bookshelf I will
[12:34] and I will definitely be investing in some and quickly.
[12:38] Side note, in the most recent box, I know I've sort of derailed
[12:41] you a couple of times here, so I apologize.
[12:43] But there is actually in the most recent box, something that's
[12:46] a little wholesome and it's a pillow cover and it's got Anya from
[12:49] Spy Family on it and she's sort of having a nap and on the top
[12:52] it reads five more minutes like that is sweet and adorable.
[12:56] Once I get A pillow.
[12:57] I'll.
[12:57] I'll share some photos of it because it's going to jump on the
[13:00] bed there.
[13:00] But it's cute.
[13:02] It was sort of.
[13:02] It felt out of place.
[13:04] I have pillows, but I mean, like, another new square pillow to
[13:07] put this one in because it's one of like the, like a couch cushion
[13:10] one, like little square one.
[13:12] It's not like a bed pillow.
[13:13] Like, I'm not sleeping just on a mattress.
[13:16] I don't know.
[13:18] You have like, you have a bachelor vibes.
[13:21] Like, it wouldn't surprise me.
[13:23] I have many pillows.
[13:24] I've even got like a.
[13:25] Like some fancy one that's like all about breathing and like,
[13:28] regulates the air around your head.
[13:30] And I got memory foam ones.
[13:31] Like, I have many pillows.
[13:33] Thank you.
[13:33] Don't.
[13:33] Don't disrespect my pillow game.
[13:36] I like that.
[13:37] As soon as I started laughing, you were like, no.
[13:40] Yeah, I'm not going to spend without pillows.
[13:43] No way.
[13:47] Oh, thank you, Otaku Box.
[13:50] So, first news, Big news.
[13:53] Aro is coming to Sydney and Melbourne as a part of her world
[13:57] tour.
[13:59] I.
[14:00] So the tour is called Hibana and it's started starting on April
[14:06] 26 next year in Japan in Saitama.
[14:11] But there's going to be loads of concerts.
[14:13] Crunchyroll is doing pre sale tickets from November 19th.
[14:15] General tickets are going on sale November 22nd.
[14:18] So if you're keen, get in next month.
[14:21] Yeah, I'm.
[14:22] I'm keen, Courtney.
[14:23] I'm going to go check out Ardo for this because she is a powerhouse.
[14:26] She's got such a great, strong, empowering voice and she
[14:31] also lends her vocal talents to so many, like, heavy hitters from
[14:34] the anime world.
[14:35] So, yeah, I'm hyped for this.
[14:37] I'm gonna.
[14:37] Gonna go along and not understand the word she's singing,
[14:40] but I'm gonna have the best time and be blown away, I'm sure.
[14:43] No, definitely.
[14:43] I think I am not a huge fan of, I guess like anime music Live.
[14:53] I guess maybe I haven't like experienced it, so I can't really
[14:57] speak to that.
[14:57] But not something I'm super keen on yet.
[15:00] But my mind might be changed.
[15:03] I may be swayed.
[15:06] Other good news though is that my happy marriage is getting an OVA
[15:10] episode and it's going to be streaming worldwide on Netflix on
[15:13] November 22nd.
[15:15] So 23 for us, but I'm very excited.
[15:19] Get hyped.
[15:20] Anyone that hasn't watched My Happy Marriage.
[15:23] What the bloody hell are you doing?
[15:25] We've been singing its praises throughout 2024 so far.
[15:29] It is fantastic.
[15:30] It is on Netflix.
[15:31] We've got a second season on the way as well.
[15:33] And, you know, seeing what Mio and Kyoka are up to, I'm excited
[15:38] because this one really pulled at the heartstrings.
[15:40] It was beautiful.
[15:42] It was sad, it was heartbreaking.
[15:44] It was uplifting.
[15:46] And the fact that it weaves in like, just normalized, you know,
[15:50] sweet, heartfelt romance within this supernatural, magical
[15:53] element, like, it just worked for me.
[15:55] I didn't see it coming.
[15:56] But then once it hit, it landed, it executed and it was just
[16:00] a great story.
[16:01] It was one of my favorites from last year.
[16:03] It's also just so gorgeous.
[16:05] And it's got that historical element as well, which is really,
[16:08] really nice.
[16:09] Love to see it.
[16:10] And the second season premieres in January on Netflix and
[16:14] other streaming services, though we're not sure which ones
[16:17] just yet.
[16:19] And in some interesting news, what I think is very interesting.
[16:27] So some people may remember from a few seasons ago a Yuri romance
[16:32] anime called Whisper Me A Love Song, and it was supposed to have
[16:37] 12 episodes.
[16:38] It stopped at 10 and then went on hiatus indefinitely.
[16:43] I'm still waiting because I.
[16:45] Well, the show wasn't groundbreaking.
[16:46] It was cute and I liked it.
[16:49] But the news about this is that the studio have had their website
[16:56] domain name expire, so they've basically, they're off grid.
[17:02] Yeah.
[17:03] I'm curious if this is to do with financials.
[17:06] We.
[17:06] We hear a lot these days as far as the cost to make these episodes.
[17:11] Like, we've seen what's happened with Uzumaki after the fantastic
[17:15] first episode.
[17:16] And then episodes two, three and four were just a complete steaming
[17:19] pile of poo.
[17:20] So I wonder if maybe the funding for the studio cloud hearts
[17:25] has just ran dry and they've just gone under.
[17:27] So it's sad to see because, you know, incomplete stories is never
[17:31] a good thing in any form of media, especially for the fans that,
[17:34] you know, have that attachment to it.
[17:36] So I hope the 11th and 12th episodes do come eventually, but
[17:40] who knows?
[17:41] Who knows, Courtney?
[17:42] Not me.
[17:43] Yeah, it's.
[17:45] It'll be interesting to see, I think, you know, it was.
[17:48] It had delays already.
[17:49] There was a lot going on with this show.
[17:52] I'm definitely going to be moving it now, though, from my watching
[17:55] list to my on hold list.
[18:00] Hopefully that changes one day.
[18:01] Back to watching again, but that would be nice.
[18:07] Shall we talk about what we've been watching this week?
[18:09] We most certainly should.
[18:10] Courtney, where do you want to start us off?
[18:13] I feel like.
[18:14] So we've been watching A lot of the same stuff.
[18:18] So I think we can kind of go through the list.
[18:22] I'm going to start with Rama 1/2.
[18:24] I only watched episode 1 this week, so I was telling Brendan this.
[18:30] But for listeners and viewers, I'm already behind on the season,
[18:35] unsurprisingly.
[18:37] So my plan this week, well for this season is to watch episodes
[18:43] in order of everything.
[18:44] So this week I went and watched episode one of everything.
[18:46] I want to watch this season rather than like trying to catch
[18:49] up on everything in one week and watching up like episode three
[18:53] of everything.
[18:53] I've watched episode one of everything I'm watching.
[18:56] So I'm talking about episode one of everything.
[18:59] I love this.
[19:01] So rhyme one half.
[19:02] Episode one.
[19:03] Cute.
[19:04] Good fun.
[19:06] I liked that.
[19:07] And I guess this is like something with old anime.
[19:09] They kind of establish the backstory and the lore in the first
[19:12] episode so you can just enjoy the comedy and like the sitcom elements.
[19:17] So we know why that Rama and the dad dad granddad are a panda
[19:26] and a girl and also a boy and a human.
[19:32] Yes.
[19:33] It's just fun.
[19:34] It's easy to consume.
[19:37] Like I said last week, it's.
[19:38] It's gorgeously animated by Mapa where it does have that nostalgic
[19:41] feel.
[19:42] But also a little modernization in there too.
[19:44] But the vocal work is great on both the English and the Japanese
[19:51] vocal tracks depending on which way you want to go.
[19:53] The characters are great and yeah, it's a silly story, but it's
[19:58] easy to consume and understand and wrap your head around the world
[20:00] and the motives and the characters and the whole.
[20:03] Will they.
[20:03] Won't they end up together off the back of this arranged marriage
[20:07] is going to lead to hijinks, I'm sure.
[20:10] Yes, I think it will be cute.
[20:15] I'm excited.
[20:16] Obviously it's, you know, coming from the same mangaka as shows
[20:20] like Inuyasha and Urusei Yatsura.
[20:23] So it's similar vibes.
[20:25] Just cute and fun.
[20:28] No, nothing too high stakes.
[20:30] Which is nice.
[20:31] And we need that sometimes, right?
[20:32] It can't always be high stakes all the time because you need those
[20:36] quieter, more relaxed moments or viewings to balance out the emotional
[20:41] well being of yourself, I feel.
[20:43] Yes.
[20:45] Also actually, I'm gonna save this one for last.
[20:49] It's my favorite.
[20:49] But how?
[20:51] I attended an all guys mixer.
[20:53] Episode one.
[20:54] You aren't watching this, are you?
[20:56] I intend to, but I haven't got around to it.
[20:59] I've got a few and the next one you're going to mention too that
[21:01] are on my to watch list.
[21:02] But I haven't checked out any yet, so I'm going to listen on here.
[21:05] Okay.
[21:05] So I love this show.
[21:09] This show is about drag kings, so women who dress up as men.
[21:15] And it's so much fun and it's a great way, I think, to kind of
[21:19] show this community the drag scene.
[21:22] Even though it's not necessarily like as campy as western
[21:27] drag, it still kind of plays into that.
[21:29] And I think in the anime community, especially among cosplayers,
[21:33] it's really common for people to kind of dress in characters that,
[21:39] you know, are the opposite gender to them.
[21:42] And it's really cool.
[21:43] Like, when I was at pax, I saw so many female cosplayers cosplaying
[21:46] as these like, hot guys.
[21:48] And I was obsessed.
[21:49] Like, I would much rather walk up to a female cosplayer dress as
[21:52] a hot guy than walk as a male cosplayer dress as a hot guy.
[21:56] Yeah, that's fair.
[21:57] That's fair.
[21:58] I think the, the illusion and the mystery always adds to it.
[22:01] Right?
[22:01] And also it's like, how did you do this?
[22:04] How?
[22:04] Like, you're a gorgeous woman or a gorgeous man.
[22:07] Like, but how did you do this?
[22:08] Gender bends to become the opposite sex and look equally or
[22:12] even more so as gorgeous.
[22:13] Like, I love the, the mystery and just the intrigue of the cosplay
[22:19] and the drag wars.
[22:20] Like, it's art and I'm all about it.
[22:23] It is, it really is.
[22:24] So this show is really good, really fun set.
[22:27] We have an adult cast, so they're all going to university,
[22:29] which is really, really nice because we love adult cast anime.
[22:35] I also watched Orb on the Movements of the Earth episode one,
[22:39] and it was much darker than I was expecting.
[22:43] It kind of gives Fushi.
[22:46] What's the anime with Fushi vibes?
[22:49] Oh, my brain.
[22:51] To your eternity.
[22:53] Yeah, to your eternity vibes.
[22:55] So they have this scene in the first episode where a guy's like
[22:59] getting his nails, like, ripped off.
[23:00] It's like the opening scene basically.
[23:03] And when you open it up on Netflix, it's like gore.
[23:07] And I'm like.
[23:08] And like body horror.
[23:09] I'm like, oh, I'm sure it's not that bad.
[23:11] It was bad.
[23:12] I was like, oh my.
[23:17] Well, yes, that will be burned into my memory forever.
[23:21] I'm.
[23:21] I'm keen to check.
[23:23] Like, like the synopsis sounds interesting.
[23:25] It does sound like one of the most different anime of the fall
[23:28] season from just a narrative based standpoint.
[23:31] Now knowing that there is that sort of darker tone, it intrigues
[23:35] me even more.
[23:36] And also Again, like, Netflix have got some heavies in the fall
[23:39] season.
[23:40] Like, they have got some absolute fire in their sort of four
[23:44] lineup.
[23:44] So, yeah, it's good to see because it hopefully gets more eyes
[23:48] on those anime, but also more eyes on anime in general.
[23:50] So we all win.
[23:52] Yeah.
[23:53] So Orbs good.
[23:55] Blue box.
[23:56] I watched episode one, finally.
[23:59] I love this show.
[24:01] It is so cute.
[24:02] I just.
[24:03] All right, episode one.
[24:05] I love that he is, like, listening and he thinks she's transferring.
[24:09] And then she's like, no, it's not me.
[24:10] It's actually my family.
[24:11] And he's like, it's so embarrassing for him.
[24:14] I'm like, you little dork, you are such a loser.
[24:16] But I love it.
[24:18] And then he, like, lent her his jacket or whatever, and then
[24:23] she hands it back and she like says his name, like, his full name.
[24:26] He's like, oh, my God, how did you know my name?
[24:28] And she's like, I wonder how I knew.
[24:31] And then he looks.
[24:31] It's like written on his sweater.
[24:32] I'm like, you are a loser.
[24:35] Hey, don't be disrespecting Taiki like that.
[24:38] He is.
[24:38] He is the cutest.
[24:40] And him and Chinatsu or cheat are her friends.
[24:43] They're great.
[24:44] They're such a fantastic duo.
[24:47] Like you said, it's wholesome.
[24:49] The budding romance is great.
[24:52] The sport, like, the interweaving of the sports stories
[24:55] with her being the basketball star and him being the budding badminton
[24:59] player.
[25:00] I love that it's going to have sort of more at stake than just will
[25:04] they, won't they?
[25:04] As far as from a romantic standpoint.
[25:06] But yeah, I've been chewing through the manga, so I am way beyond
[25:11] this first season, but I'm not anywhere near less excited watching
[25:15] these episodes come out.
[25:16] Like, I watched episode four last night, and my heart is overflowing
[25:21] from this anime.
[25:22] Like, it's one of my favorites of the season so far.
[25:25] I just love that it feels so high school romance.
[25:29] Y Like, the kind of situations that they put in, like her kind of
[25:35] like teasing him a little and him getting a bit flustered is really,
[25:40] really nice and just comforting in a way.
[25:43] Yeah, it's real and relatable.
[25:45] Hey.
[25:45] Yeah, right.
[25:46] Like, it's just.
[25:47] It's nice.
[25:48] It's just nice.
[25:48] And it's beautiful.
[25:49] It's gorgeously animated.
[25:53] So the last thing I want to talk about is Yakuza Fiance Episode
[25:58] one.
[25:58] Have you watched this?
[26:00] I've watched the first three episodes, so yeah, I'm up to stuff.
[26:04] Yeah.
[26:05] Cool.
[26:06] So episode one.
[26:08] I really like that.
[26:10] This is darker than I thought it would be.
[26:14] I like that it really is like Crime Syndicate heavy.
[26:20] I also like that so far their relationship is toxic and messy and
[26:24] bad.
[26:25] And they have bad motives for like, being, you know, like in this
[26:29] kind of almost arranged marriage situation.
[26:32] And he's a bad boy.
[26:35] Yeah.
[26:37] It was uncomfortable to watch at times the first two episodes because
[26:41] they do not shy away, like you said, from the toxicity and just
[26:44] these abhorrent acts that have taken place.
[26:47] Like you sit there and go, you want to root for these two.
[26:49] But then it's like you guys are kind of both pieces of right
[26:52] now for various reasons, you know, some more so than others.
[26:55] Like Kirakawa is a bad son of a gun who's like taking pleasure
[27:00] in beating the piss out of people constantly and doing other
[27:04] things like that we see off camera potentially.
[27:06] As far as murder and God knows what.
[27:08] Like, it is not shying away from showing that legit Yakuza underbelly,
[27:14] which I like.
[27:15] And I hope the romance will become something a little bit more
[27:18] pure and sweet over time.
[27:19] Like we see little sprinkles of it as far as the will they, won't
[27:22] they?
[27:23] Especially in episode two and three where there's a bit of a power
[27:26] shift and stuff that starts to play out between the two leads.
[27:29] But yeah, the darkness, it really took me by surprise because
[27:32] I'm like, okay, this is going to be nice.
[27:34] And probably some whimsical based yakuza interjections into this
[27:38] love.
[27:38] And it's like, oh, they're dying, they're getting beaten to
[27:41] a pulp.
[27:42] There's like some, you know, abusive situations playing out here
[27:46] in this high school romance.
[27:47] You're like, oh, I don't know how.
[27:48] To feel because, like, it makes me think of Yakuza Housewife.
[27:57] House Husband.
[27:58] Yeah, anime.
[28:00] When I first started watching, I was like, oh, it's going to be
[28:03] like Way of the House Husband.
[28:04] But no, it's completely different and it's grittier and kind
[28:09] of sexier in a way.
[28:11] Like it's, you know, there are some light moments, but very far
[28:17] and few between so far.
[28:19] How was the heart rate when he took his shirt off when he's like
[28:21] tattooed up, Were you just like, oh, mamma mia.
[28:25] I.
[28:27] Yeah.
[28:27] What have you been watching?
[28:30] I've been watching a few things.
[28:32] The first one I wanted to highlight, I jumped into Negative
[28:35] Positive Angler this.
[28:37] This past week.
[28:38] Obviously I mentioned my fandom.
[28:42] Why not?
[28:43] That's the studio name.
[28:45] Oh, okay.
[28:46] I was like, yeah, so it's it's.
[28:49] The studio behind Negative Positive Angular is nuts.
[28:52] So what I've done in my notes is like what I've been watching.
[28:55] I'll list the anime and then beside that, in case I might forget,
[29:00] I'll list the studio sometimes.
[29:02] So that is why N capital U capital T is written there in parentheses.
[29:07] So now Courtney knows.
[29:09] And now the listeners and viewers know.
[29:12] No, because it literally, guys, it says on the script it says
[29:17] negative positive angler, brackets nut.
[29:20] And I'm like, Brennan, what have you been doing?
[29:23] We.
[29:24] We talk about that on More than Headlines After Dark.
[29:26] This is the.
[29:27] The morning session.
[29:28] This is the wholesome episode.
[29:29] So we'll park that for another time.
[29:32] I'm sorry, Please continue.
[29:34] That's all good.
[29:34] That's all good.
[29:35] But yeah, Negative Positive Angular.
[29:37] Sure.
[29:38] There are, you know, terminal ill diagnoses happening right off
[29:41] the rip.
[29:42] There's crippling debt, there's loan sharks chasing this
[29:45] boy and a suicide attempt all in the first five minutes.
[29:48] So you're like, oh boy, what have I signed up for here?
[29:51] This is dark, this is heavy.
[29:53] This is going to be emotionally draining.
[29:56] But then it takes a shift.
[29:58] And Negative Positive Angler feels just like the cozy anime of
[30:02] the season for me because you've got great life lessons, a
[30:06] really fun cast, gorgeous animation by nut.
[30:09] Shout out to them.
[30:11] And also just like some cool educational processes around fishing.
[30:16] Like I'm.
[30:16] I'm a fishing fiend.
[30:17] I've said that a few times on the pod and just in most of my life.
[30:20] And it's feeling like, yeah, npa.
[30:23] I'm going to use it in shorthand right now.
[30:25] This one's got me hook, line and sink.
[30:26] Accord.
[30:26] I'm all about it.
[30:27] And also there's a handsome character in here that I think is
[30:32] right up your alley.
[30:33] Let me just grab his name before I forget here.
[30:37] So this guy's name is Takaki and he's a handsome pink haired dude
[30:43] with some earrings.
[30:44] And he's just a nice guy that teaches Sasuke the way of the fisherman.
[30:50] And I feel he's gonna be your little old crush in this.
[30:53] The pink haired guy.
[30:55] Yeah, there is a silver haired guy too, but he doesn't really get
[30:58] much run.
[30:59] He's been in a couple of scenes in the first few episodes.
[31:02] But Mr.
[31:03] Pink Haired Guy, Takaki is going to be your boy.
[31:06] I can already see it now.
[31:07] The second he's on screen, I'm like, that's Courtney's man.
[31:10] It's the sleepy eyes that get me.
[31:15] I love a sleepy eyed Boy, stop laughing.
[31:22] Yeah, but negative, positive, angular.
[31:24] It's gorgeous.
[31:25] It's fun.
[31:26] Yes, the, the tone at the start where you're like man, this,
[31:29] this guy just tried to kill himself.
[31:30] He's you know, been diagnosed with some terminal illness.
[31:33] He's got two years left to give, is this going to be too heavy?
[31:36] But then yeah, they take a hard right and then it's all about
[31:39] the fishing life and then he starts to live again through his
[31:42] newfound love of fishing and friendship.
[31:44] And it's great.
[31:45] I'm all about it.
[31:46] It's fun.
[31:47] Well, it is called negative positive angle.
[31:52] Makes sense.
[31:54] It does make sense.
[31:55] But very enjoyable, Courtney.
[31:56] Very enjoyable and I mentioned it earlier in the news.
[32:00] I got along to check out.
[32:01] Look back in the cinema on Thursday me and three other Johnny
[32:05] Randos had a great time.
[32:08] Gorgeously animated story about friendship, personal growth,
[32:12] art and the pursuit of perfection.
[32:14] I think things in a lot of ways that interweave between us here
[32:17] on the pod and just general Pete, like people in general, I think
[32:20] there is some, some takeaways there that we can all relate to and
[32:23] empathize with.
[32:25] I really adored the dynamic of the confident Fujino and then the
[32:28] shut in Kiyamoto.
[32:30] So they're the two young aspiring manga cars from childhood
[32:34] doing their thing where Fujino is the, you know, the anime or the
[32:39] manga prodigy at school and she's doing these little weekly manga
[32:45] in the weekly news article that's going around the school.
[32:48] So everyone's like man, you're so good.
[32:50] And then Kiyomoto gets a chance to do her own thing and then
[32:54] her art style is better than Fujino.
[32:56] So there's this rivalry that develops and this sort of bond that
[33:00] builds off the back of this rivalry.
[33:02] And it's super cute but it's a coming of age story that proudly
[33:07] wears its heart on its painted sleeve and It's a delightful 58 minute
[33:11] watch that is very much worth your time in my opinion.
[33:14] Like it was sweet, it did not overstay its welcome.
[33:18] It told a very cute, clear and concise story over that hour runtime.
[33:23] There is some emotional moments that you know, hit pretty
[33:27] hard near the end.
[33:28] I'm gonna not spoil anything.
[33:29] But yeah, a couple of tears were shed at the back, you know,
[33:33] the final act of the, of the film.
[33:35] But yeah, really, really well done, gorgeously shot.
[33:38] I liked at times where they sort of slowed that frame rate down
[33:42] to like sub 15 seconds to sort of just break up the pacing and sort
[33:46] of the meandering through some of the landscapes.
[33:49] But yeah, Great time, great characters, great animation.
[33:52] And yeah, check it out whether you can get to the cinema tomorrow
[33:55] or, or today if you're listening to us on the 27th, or check
[33:59] it out on Prime Video in a little over, you know, two weeks
[34:01] time.
[34:02] When you said there was some crying in the back, you paused and
[34:07] I was like, oh, he's gonna say crying in the back of the cinema.
[34:10] And he said crying in the back half of the movie.
[34:12] I'm really disappointed that you didn't give us an insight into
[34:15] your experience.
[34:17] Well, I did cry.
[34:19] I shed some tears.
[34:20] I looked around and I think I was the only one of the four of us
[34:24] in the cinema that got a little teary eyed.
[34:26] But I'm just a emotional little guy, Courtney.
[34:29] But yeah, it's.
[34:31] It's fun, it's sweet and has some emotional hits.
[34:34] I want to see you cry.
[34:37] Okay.
[34:37] If we're ever watching anime together, there's a chance I'll be
[34:41] probably crying at some point.
[34:42] So.
[34:43] Yeah, me too.
[34:44] It's.
[34:44] It's on the roadmap for sure.
[34:46] Okay, good.
[34:47] Anyway, what have you been reading?
[34:49] Yeah, quick, quick sort of update.
[34:52] Been reading a lot.
[34:53] But I wanted to mention that now.
[34:55] Oshi.
[34:55] No, Season two has ended.
[34:57] I have powered through the manga and I am fully up to date on
[35:01] the manga.
[35:02] I've read 80 plus chapters the last couple of days.
[35:06] It is great.
[35:07] I'm not going to spill any tea here because the story, oh boy.
[35:11] You think you know where it's going after season two.
[35:13] You ain't got no idea.
[35:14] You ain't ready for the smoke to come.
[35:17] It is so much good, nasty dramatic nonsense and I'm here for
[35:23] it.
[35:23] So Courtney, get excited for season three or if you take the plunge
[35:27] on the manga.
[35:28] Like the manga is gorgeous.
[35:30] Like there is certainly some impact that you lose from the manga
[35:35] going to the anime because some of the animation choices and
[35:38] the artistic stylings, you can't do all that on a static panel.
[35:41] But it's still stunning, still hits hard.
[35:45] It's still that same familiar world we've gotten to know over the
[35:48] last two seasons, but really, really great.
[35:50] And the other one I've been working my way through, little cozy
[35:54] slice of life with a will they, won't they romance sort of
[35:57] caveat as well, called smoking behind the supermarket with you.
[36:01] Just, just fun.
[36:02] Just like this, you know, 40 something dude that doesn't really
[36:05] have much any of his life, that has a crush on this supermarket
[36:09] attendant, goes in there and says hello to her and that's the
[36:11] highlight.
[36:12] Of his days most of the time, because he's just, you know, a drone
[36:14] for the man in his life.
[36:16] But then randomly he goes to, you know, have a smoke behind the
[36:20] supermarket and he meets another girl behind the supermarket
[36:24] and they start to have a conversation.
[36:25] But little does he know, we know pretty quick.
[36:27] So I'll spoil it here because it happens, you know, pretty imminently.
[36:31] He does.
[36:31] He's not aware that the girl smoking behind the supermarket, who's
[36:34] out of her garb and it's got a bit more of an alternative casual
[36:37] look outside of work, is the same girl he's crushing on.
[36:41] So we start sort of almost building relationships between the
[36:45] girl he crushes on is the cashier clerk and the girl that's
[36:48] at the back that's a little bit more, you know, bad ass and alternative
[36:52] and having a cigarette and it's like, will they, won't they
[36:55] again?
[36:55] But it's just good, real talk and it's just been an easy read to
[37:00] sort of break up whatever else I'm doing during the week.
[37:02] It sounds so good.
[37:04] I want to read it.
[37:05] Yeah.
[37:06] Welcome to My God, Smoking behind the supermarket with you.
[37:08] Highly recommended.
[37:09] Very good.
[37:09] What?
[37:10] What app?
[37:11] What?
[37:14] Not one of the main ones.
[37:15] I'll leave it at that.
[37:16] Never mind.
[37:17] I'm sure it is on one of the main ones, but I just have all of
[37:20] mine in one.
[37:21] One directory because it just makes it easier.
[37:23] But I'll find it and I'll share it with you.
[37:25] But yeah, smoking behind the supermarket with you.
[37:27] Highly recommended.
[37:29] Okay.
[37:30] Cute.
[37:31] Okay, let's move into this.
[37:39] Okay, and this review of the week comes courtesy of dPrez82 on
[37:46] Apple Podcasts.
[37:47] The review headline reads A great Beginner friendly show.
[37:52] A lot of anime podcasts focus on the latest releases and assume
[37:55] the listener is already fully immersed in anime culture.
[37:58] Often they also skew towards a younger audience.
[38:02] Those people might also love this podcast, but what makes this
[38:05] one different is that some of the guests are older, lapsed anime
[38:08] fans just coming back to the medium.
[38:11] They may have grown up on the 90s Clash classics, but maybe aren't
[38:14] up to the seasonal releases of today.
[38:16] The hosts definitely know their stuff, so I wouldn't say this
[38:18] is a podcast just for beginners, but it strikes the perfect
[38:22] balance between making it very beginner friendly.
[38:25] Dprez82, we thank you for the fantastic words.
[38:33] Exactly what Courtney said.
[38:35] I agree 100 there.
[38:37] But yeah, if you wanted to get your review spoken about and heard
[38:42] in podcast form, you can do so over on Apple Podcasts or Spotify.
[38:46] Sadly, the algorithm only accepts five star reviews.
[38:49] But yeah, let your thoughts be heard on what we are doing good,
[38:53] great or otherwise here.
[38:55] And we will gladly air those thoughts on this podcast in future
[38:59] episodes.
[38:59] So thanks again to Deep Pritz 82.
[39:02] We appreciate you.
[39:04] Thank you, Courtney.
[39:05] That brings us to the official end of episode 21 of the More Than
[39:10] Headlines podcast.
[39:11] Have you got anything you wanted to mention or shout out before
[39:14] we close this down for another week?
[39:16] Yes.
[39:17] I have been playing this game called web fishing.
[39:22] And you, you can be a cat or a dog and you're fishing and it's like
[39:27] animal crossing, but only fishing.
[39:29] And you can catch a lot of fish.
[39:31] Fun.
[39:32] See, that's.
[39:33] That's right, my wheelhouse.
[39:34] Like I've said on this podcast, I am a slut fishing.
[39:37] Maybe I need to get web fishing into my rotation because
[39:40] I can't get.
[39:41] Enough $7.50on Steam right now.
[39:45] And it's.
[39:46] It's supposed to be like a chat fishing game, but I just play
[39:50] offline and like watch anime and I play it in the background.
[39:55] I love that.
[39:57] Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[39:58] Like, it's like no high stakes.
[40:00] Like you can actually play like while you're watching something
[40:03] else.
[40:03] Like, it's really good.
[40:05] Can you customize your cat or dog?
[40:08] Can.
[40:08] Can you select different breeds?
[40:09] Can I have a little Frenchie that I can fish with?
[40:12] Yeah, yeah.
[40:13] So you will not know.
[40:15] So it's like cat, dog and then mystery creature.
[40:19] I don't know, I forgot what it is.
[40:20] But you can pick different colors.
[40:23] So not necessarily different breeds, but different colors to like
[40:27] kind of signify that.
[40:28] So you could make one of your boys in the game and play as him
[40:34] and you can like customize loads of stuff.
[40:36] It's really good.
[40:37] Okay, I will check that out after this.
[40:39] And 7.50.
[40:40] You know, that's.
[40:41] That's nothing.
[40:42] Yeah, but if you wanted to spend a little less due to, you know,
[40:46] the interest rates and the cost of living consistently increasing,
