[0:03] Speaker 1: A young, loving, ambitious mother is filled with excitement as
[0:07] Speaker 1: she anticipates new opportunities in a different city with her partner. However,
[0:12] Speaker 1: this fresh start turns daunting when neighbors inner community notice
[0:17] Speaker 1: her abandoned car. Could a complicated love triangle be at
[0:21] Speaker 1: the heart of this bewildering situation? What happens when love
[0:26] Speaker 1: becomes fatal? This is a Fatal Attraction podcast with an
[0:31] Speaker 1: unthinkable end.
[0:39] Speaker 2: May ninth, twenty seventeen. It's Tuesday evening in Mobile, Alabama,
[0:45] Speaker 2: a city of two hundred thousand, two hours east of
[0:48] Speaker 2: New Orleans.
[0:49] Speaker 3: Mobil is small compared to some of your major cities,
[0:52] Speaker 3: like your Atlanta's, Houston's, Dallas. But is it a really
[0:56] Speaker 3: big city? Right here on the water.
[0:58] Speaker 4: We have Mobile Bay on one's and then we have
[1:00] Speaker 4: the golf of Mexico on the other side.
[1:02] Speaker 3: We'll consider it city.
[1:04] Speaker 5: Most people think country, but for the most parties nice
[1:07] Speaker 5: being quiet.
[1:11] Speaker 2: Even the nine to one one call that comes into
[1:13] Speaker 2: Mobile Police at six thirty pm that evening seems to
[1:17] Speaker 2: be no emergency.
[1:19] Speaker 6: The caller said the house across the street had been
[1:21] Speaker 6: vacant for some time, but now there was a car
[1:24] Speaker 6: parked behind it.
[1:26] Speaker 2: Yes, there's been a car that's been sitting out there
[1:29] Speaker 2: all day long.
[1:31] Speaker 7: We're really big on community. We look out for each other.
[1:35] Speaker 2: If you can have an officer come and check it.
[1:37] Speaker 8: Out for me.
[1:38] Speaker 9: They know there's normally not a car behind that house.
[1:41] Speaker 7: So the police came out to canvass the area.
[1:45] Speaker 2: But when they arrive, officers find more than just an
[1:48] Speaker 2: abandoned car.
[1:50] Speaker 4: When the officers approached the vehicle, there were appeared to
[1:53] Speaker 4: be a person in the car, a.
[1:56] Speaker 2: Young woman reclimbing in the passenger seat.
[2:00] Speaker 6: So the officer it looked as if she may have
[2:02] Speaker 6: been asleep.
[2:03] Speaker 2: Ma'am, But the old woman isn't sleeping, ma'am.
[2:11] Speaker 4: Important they saw that the female had a gunshot wound
[2:15] Speaker 4: to her head.
[2:17] Speaker 3: Her purse is still there with all of her belongings.
[2:21] Speaker 6: Based on the ID officers found in her purse, the
[2:23] Speaker 6: woman was twenty seven year old Chanie Sumter.
[2:31] Speaker 2: Sheanie Sumter was a fun, loving young woman with a
[2:34] Speaker 2: magnetic personality.
[2:36] Speaker 5: She was just a delight. We would laugh all the time.
[2:39] Speaker 5: It was never a dull moment with her. She loved
[2:42] Speaker 5: to sing, she loved to dance, she loved to party.
[2:46] Speaker 5: Our favorite thing that it was probably just get in
[2:48] Speaker 5: the car and just ride and maybe go to Louisiana
[2:51] Speaker 5: just to go on Bourbon Street, just to have fun.
[2:55] Speaker 2: But behind the singing and left her, there were plenty
[2:58] Speaker 2: of tears.
[3:00] Speaker 3: Her mother passed when she was ten years old.
[3:03] Speaker 10: It's something very.
[3:04] Speaker 11: Hard, especially when they're a young age, when they don't
[3:08] Speaker 11: quite understand why it's my mom not gonna be here anymore.
[3:14] Speaker 2: Not that Shenis had much time to grieve.
[3:17] Speaker 5: Our mom passed when I was two years old, so
[3:19] Speaker 5: she basically raised me.
[3:22] Speaker 11: She was the big sister, but she was also the
[3:25] Speaker 11: mom too, especially when it came to Miracle. It was
[3:28] Speaker 11: like Miraca was her baby.
[3:31] Speaker 10: I could come to her for anything. She was always
[3:33] Speaker 10: there for.
[3:34] Speaker 2: Me, even after Shenise had a child of her own.
[3:40] Speaker 3: She had a son when she was eighteen.
[3:43] Speaker 10: She loved him. That was her world, That was her heart.
[3:47] Speaker 5: Anything she could get for him, she would do that
[3:49] Speaker 5: anytime she could spend with them.
[3:51] Speaker 10: You know, she was a good mom.
[3:54] Speaker 2: But she was always a single mom.
[3:57] Speaker 5: She was a beautiful girl, so it was not uncommon
[4:00] Speaker 5: for her to have guy friends. But I don't think
[4:03] Speaker 5: it was a saint where she really want a serious relationship.
[4:07] Speaker 5: She never really spoke about marriage. She has a son,
[4:10] Speaker 5: so she just wanted to be able to take care
[4:12] Speaker 5: of her and her son. She was very focused on
[4:15] Speaker 5: that more than she was focused on dating and a man.
[4:19] Speaker 12: Right, have a good day, hug?
[4:21] Speaker 3: What about my hug?
[4:28] Speaker 2: Maybe she was just waiting for the right man.
[4:31] Speaker 13: Being a single mother, it would definitely be something to
[4:36] Speaker 13: look forward to to have a partner, to have someone
[4:38] Speaker 13: she could depend on.
[4:41] Speaker 5: When she meet that man that just makes her want
[4:43] Speaker 5: to settle down, then that would have been the one.
[4:48] Speaker 2: Or maybe that man had been there all along.
[4:51] Speaker 5: Shenissa and Peter Gale had known each other for a while,
[4:54] Speaker 5: and after about five years, that's when a relationship started
[4:59] Speaker 5: between the.
[5:01] Speaker 12: Peter was charming.
[5:02] Speaker 13: He made her feel like her world was the only
[5:05] Speaker 13: thing that mattered.
[5:06] Speaker 3: I don't want to take you up, just the two of us, really, yeah,
[5:11] Speaker 3: we really want to get to know you, Okay, assume it.
[5:17] Speaker 11: When I first met Peter, I was like, this is
[5:22] Speaker 11: not she needs tight Where did he come from?
[5:25] Speaker 9: But she was happy.
[5:27] Speaker 13: She wanted to have someone she could share her life
[5:30] Speaker 13: with who would be there and stay there.
[5:36] Speaker 6: Soon.
[5:36] Speaker 2: It looked as if Shenise was finally settling down.
[5:40] Speaker 13: As far as connections, Sheanie and Peter had something completely different.
[5:46] Speaker 7: Our friends can only give us so much. We need
[5:49] Speaker 7: that companionship in our personal life.
[5:53] Speaker 13: A new relationship gives you the feeling of hope, and
[5:56] Speaker 13: she felt that he would be a great component to
[5:59] Speaker 13: the life She was still deep.
[6:05] Speaker 2: But a promising relationship wasn't the only thing giving Shenie
[6:09] Speaker 2: new hope.
[6:11] Speaker 5: Shenie mentioned to us that she may be moving to Jacksonville, Florida,
[6:15] Speaker 5: for a job as an insurance suggester.
[6:18] Speaker 10: I'm so in earthless. I was supposed to hear something
[6:20] Speaker 10: about six I.
[6:21] Speaker 8: Want to shake an email.
[6:23] Speaker 3: I won't hurt the ship, okay.
[6:25] Speaker 10: If you say so. Oh my gosh, I got it.
[6:34] Speaker 5: I was happy for her because I knew that insurance
[6:37] Speaker 5: suggesting was very lucrative, and that was Sheeny's goal to
[6:40] Speaker 5: create a lot of income so she can do different
[6:43] Speaker 5: things for her and her family.
[6:45] Speaker 3: Sheanie is thinking everything is lining up at this point.
[6:48] Speaker 3: She got our man, got our family getting ready to
[6:51] Speaker 3: start this new job. So it was an exciting time for.
[6:57] Speaker 2: And on Monday May eighth, twenty seventeen, the only thing
[7:01] Speaker 2: she needed to make that future reality was a quick
[7:04] Speaker 2: trip across the state line.
[7:07] Speaker 10: In order to work in Jacksonville.
[7:08] Speaker 5: She had to go and get some fingerprints done or
[7:12] Speaker 5: Florida adjuster's license.
[7:16] Speaker 2: But now, just hours later, police had found her car
[7:21] Speaker 2: parked behind a vacant house on the outskirts of Mobile.
[7:25] Speaker 13: Inside of the car was Shenis's body.
[7:29] Speaker 2: She had a fatal gunshot wound to the head.
[7:32] Speaker 13: There was the smell of gunpowder. There was blood everywhere
[7:36] Speaker 13: in the vehicicule.
[7:39] Speaker 9: There was a gun found at her feet.
[7:43] Speaker 13: Looks like it fell right after the gun was triggered.
[7:47] Speaker 3: It appears to be a suicide.
[7:54] Speaker 1: Stay with us as we learn more about what happened
[7:57] Speaker 1: to Shie something. This is a Fatal Attraction podcast.
[8:08] Speaker 2: Janice Sumter had just received a promising job offer that
[8:11] Speaker 2: would take the single mom far from her hometown of Mobile, Alabama.
[8:16] Speaker 2: I got it.
[8:17] Speaker 5: Nie was a go getter, she was a hustler, So
[8:20] Speaker 5: when she got the offer to go work in Jacksonville, Florida,
[8:23] Speaker 5: she was ready.
[8:26] Speaker 10: It was a ver opportunity for her.
[8:28] Speaker 11: Had fun, so, she was very heavy.
[8:31] Speaker 13: She had a boyfriend, she had her son, she had
[8:33] Speaker 13: a job, and life was moving forward for her.
[8:39] Speaker 2: Instead, her life has come to a sudden end behind
[8:43] Speaker 2: a vacant house on the outskirts of mobile.
[8:46] Speaker 4: When the officers got there, it was observed that Shenise
[8:49] Speaker 4: was from the passenger seat of the car with a
[8:52] Speaker 4: gunshot wound to her head.
[8:54] Speaker 13: There was a revolver found on the floor of the
[8:57] Speaker 13: passenger seat in front of Sheanice's by. It just seemed
[9:01] Speaker 13: as if she had done this to herself.
[9:05] Speaker 6: Her purse, phone, and wallet were all in the car.
[9:09] Speaker 7: The keys were still.
[9:11] Speaker 2: In the ignition. But was her death a suicide? Some
[9:18] Speaker 2: details about the scene trouble detectives.
[9:21] Speaker 4: Most people that have killed themselves in cars don't take
[9:24] Speaker 4: the time to remove themselves from the driver's seat, go
[9:27] Speaker 4: to the passenger side and then shoot themselves.
[9:30] Speaker 9: They're just gonna go ahead and do it.
[9:33] Speaker 8: And she's left handed.
[9:35] Speaker 3: Could be if.
[9:37] Speaker 7: You're going to hold the gun, you would hold it
[9:40] Speaker 7: and shoot with your dominante hand.
[9:42] Speaker 6: Which would be awkward to do in the driver's seat.
[9:45] Speaker 6: If you were left handed.
[9:47] Speaker 3: Her arm would have been cramped against the door of
[9:50] Speaker 3: the window.
[9:52] Speaker 2: Or is there another more obvious explanation?
[9:56] Speaker 6: Someone could have driven Chinese out to the scene, shot
[9:59] Speaker 6: her and then walked away.
[10:02] Speaker 4: It doesn't really change anything, because we still follow through
[10:06] Speaker 4: on every case as if it is a homicide until
[10:09] Speaker 4: we get to that fact. But it was unclear whether
[10:13] Speaker 4: or not this was a suicide or the homicide.
[10:17] Speaker 2: All detectives know for sure is that whoever pulled the trigger,
[10:22] Speaker 2: the shooting occurred in the car.
[10:25] Speaker 9: There was blood splatter on the door.
[10:28] Speaker 13: There was the aroma of gunpowdered in the car.
[10:33] Speaker 2: While the coroner's crew prepared Sniza's body for transport, detectives
[10:37] Speaker 2: talked to the neighbor who initially called nine to one one.
[10:41] Speaker 8: So we're just gonna ask you a couple questions. Can
[10:43] Speaker 8: you tell me a little bit about what she saw?
[10:46] Speaker 10: She said the car was there when she woke up
[10:48] Speaker 10: that morning.
[10:49] Speaker 2: When I woke up early in the morning, I noticed
[10:52] Speaker 2: a car sitting outside of the abandoned house across the street.
[10:56] Speaker 6: After it had sat there all day. She decided to
[10:59] Speaker 6: call the police.
[11:01] Speaker 4: The person called and said, there's an abandoned vehicle part
[11:04] Speaker 4: behind an abandoned house.
[11:06] Speaker 2: If you can have an officer come and check.
[11:07] Speaker 8: It out for me.
[11:09] Speaker 7: She didn't note there was a body in the car.
[11:12] Speaker 8: You didn't hear a gunshot, not at all? Okay, Well,
[11:16] Speaker 8: thank you.
[11:17] Speaker 3: For your time.
[11:18] Speaker 2: After talking to the neighbor, it's time for detectives to
[11:22] Speaker 2: contact Shenise's family.
[11:24] Speaker 4: Now's our time to start building up any kind of
[11:27] Speaker 4: background information we can on her.
[11:30] Speaker 2: One of the first things detectives learned is that the
[11:33] Speaker 2: family reported Shechanise missing just a few hours earlier.
[11:38] Speaker 4: They had not heard from her or been able to
[11:39] Speaker 4: make contact with her for over a day.
[11:42] Speaker 6: She had been traveling out of town for a work appointment,
[11:45] Speaker 6: but was supposed to be back by now.
[11:48] Speaker 10: I was at work and my nephew takes me, Hey, miracle,
[11:52] Speaker 10: have you heard from my mom? And that was odd.
[11:54] Speaker 5: I immediately called her and I taxt her no response.
[11:59] Speaker 2: After reporting her missing, Nissa's family gathered at her grandmother's house.
[12:04] Speaker 11: We didn't really know what was going on booth. Nobody
[12:07] Speaker 11: had talked to her, and it was unusual.
[12:11] Speaker 10: We're all sitting in the living room. What are we
[12:14] Speaker 10: gonna do? Where have you looked? Who have you called?
[12:18] Speaker 2: The family is still considering their next move. When there's
[12:22] Speaker 2: a knock at the door.
[12:25] Speaker 10: My sister, she answered the door very shakenly.
[12:29] Speaker 8: Can we come in?
[12:31] Speaker 5: The knock is from two detectives and it was surreal.
[12:36] Speaker 10: It was like, what are they.
[12:37] Speaker 9: About to say?
[12:39] Speaker 8: So, I'm sorry to tell you, but we found Nice today.
[12:42] Speaker 8: We found her body.
[12:43] Speaker 11: God, you never had that feeling that something's happening, but
[12:52] Speaker 11: you can't believe it's happening.
[12:55] Speaker 10: The entire house was just flipped upside down.
[13:00] Speaker 11: Was crying and hollering and screaming, no, no, no, this
[13:05] Speaker 11: can't be true.
[13:06] Speaker 2: Despite the family's overwhelming grief, the detectives ask Sheanie's sisters
[13:12] Speaker 2: if they can come down to the station for a
[13:14] Speaker 2: brief statement.
[13:15] Speaker 4: We asked them we could come back with us to
[13:17] Speaker 4: headquarters so we could just sit down and try to
[13:20] Speaker 4: gain as much information as we could about Shenie.
[13:23] Speaker 5: I was able to just muster myself up enough to
[13:27] Speaker 5: talk to the detective.
[13:32] Speaker 2: Once at police headquarters, they tell detectives that Shechanie had
[13:36] Speaker 2: driven to Pensacola, Florida, on Monday.
[13:40] Speaker 8: It was for her new job. They need her fingerprints.
[13:44] Speaker 8: Sounds like a background check. Yeah, that's what she said.
[13:47] Speaker 6: Pensacola was only an hour from Mobile, but Nice had
[13:51] Speaker 6: left her son with her grandmother while she was gone.
[13:55] Speaker 9: Was she planning on staying to night.
[13:57] Speaker 8: I'm not sure.
[13:58] Speaker 2: All her sisters knew is that after heading to Pensacola,
[14:02] Speaker 2: Shenie had gone silent.
[14:05] Speaker 5: My sister called Peter and said, hey, where Peter said,
[14:10] Speaker 5: I don't know, Miracle.
[14:11] Speaker 9: Who's Peter?
[14:13] Speaker 6: Her boyfriend, Peter Gills.
[14:17] Speaker 8: Did he go to Pensacola with her?
[14:19] Speaker 10: Probably, I'm not one hundred percent you were. But he
[14:22] Speaker 10: had the car more than her.
[14:24] Speaker 2: But Sheanie's sisters say they are sure of one thing.
[14:29] Speaker 5: My sister would have never, ever, ever done this to herself.
[14:33] Speaker 8: That's not who she was.
[14:35] Speaker 5: She had sisters, they loved her in her own song,
[14:38] Speaker 5: So I just don't think she would have done it.
[14:41] Speaker 10: She wouldn't do that to her son. I knew that
[14:44] Speaker 10: it was a murder.
[14:48] Speaker 8: We are right there with it.
[14:51] Speaker 1: The unexpected twist and the unexpected turns stay with us
[14:55] Speaker 1: as we draw closer to the truth. This is a
[14:58] Speaker 1: Fatal Attraction podcast.
[15:05] Speaker 2: Sheanice Sumter's family is convinced that the gunshot wound that
[15:09] Speaker 2: killed the twenty seven year old single mom wasn't self inflicted.
[15:14] Speaker 2: But I would not believe that.
[15:15] Speaker 5: She was not the type of person that would have
[15:17] Speaker 5: a reason to commit suicide.
[15:20] Speaker 10: She would never take her life.
[15:21] Speaker 5: It was a homicide, and it was not a suicide.
[15:26] Speaker 2: Did Shenice have a secret she'd kept from her family?
[15:30] Speaker 7: People have their own emotional trauma, and they might not
[15:34] Speaker 7: share because of fear of what family members might think
[15:37] Speaker 7: of them. Family might not have been in tune to
[15:40] Speaker 7: everything that she might have been going through.
[15:45] Speaker 2: Was it possible something had gone wrong with her new job?
[15:49] Speaker 4: The sister had told us that the day before, Shenie
[15:52] Speaker 4: had driven over to Pensacola for a background check for
[15:55] Speaker 4: her adjuster's license.
[15:58] Speaker 2: Or was it possible Shenie hadn't been alone.
[16:02] Speaker 6: According to her sister, Shenisa's boyfriend, Peter Giles may have
[16:06] Speaker 6: gone with her to Pensacola.
[16:09] Speaker 4: That was useful to us because we knew once we
[16:11] Speaker 4: find Peter, we can narrow down the timeframes of when
[16:15] Speaker 4: he last saw her and whether or not he was
[16:17] Speaker 4: with her the day before and get him.
[16:19] Speaker 8: Sorry for your loss. My partner will see out.
[16:26] Speaker 2: The next morning when detectives bring him in for questioning.
[16:29] Speaker 2: Shenie's boyfriend had already heard the news that she's dead.
[16:34] Speaker 6: That's why we're.
[16:34] Speaker 1: Here to talk about exactly what happened. Oh said by Rodney.
[16:43] Speaker 3: Of course, he's distraught, the love of his life.
[16:45] Speaker 6: Is gone.
[16:47] Speaker 13: He does inform them that they did go to Florida together.
[16:51] Speaker 5: We got.
[16:54] Speaker 4: Around about eleven.
[16:56] Speaker 12: She was excited about the new job.
[16:59] Speaker 3: Everything was fine and danny.
[17:01] Speaker 2: But something happened on the way back to Mobile that night. Yeah,
[17:06] Speaker 2: you know, we get.
[17:07] Speaker 1: Hunger, so we don't get.
[17:10] Speaker 8: There.
[17:10] Speaker 3: In the drive through and a phone call comes in.
[17:16] Speaker 12: It's another woman calling Peter.
[17:22] Speaker 2: Peter says, in his rush to decline the call, he
[17:25] Speaker 2: accidentally answered, what the don't.
[17:29] Speaker 10: Trip, It ain't nobody. Who is that star.
[17:33] Speaker 4: These newer cars, your phone can hook up to the stereo.
[17:37] Speaker 3: That phone call is from his Sobbies My girl, Sir.
[17:44] Speaker 13: Peter's been messing around and this is the first time
[17:47] Speaker 13: Shenis is finding this information at all.
[17:51] Speaker 3: That did not go well with Shenise at all.
[17:57] Speaker 2: What you mean on trip she's.
[17:58] Speaker 12: Talking about she needs you?
[18:00] Speaker 8: Is that down?
[18:01] Speaker 3: Tell me not the trip kind of like she can
[18:04] Speaker 3: kill me. I'm like, uh, you should have dropped me out,
[18:08] Speaker 3: get me out of her.
[18:09] Speaker 2: Peter says he drove to his mother's house, got out
[18:12] Speaker 2: of the car and gave the keys to Nise.
[18:16] Speaker 6: I give her, dropped.
[18:17] Speaker 5: Me out and that's the.
[18:20] Speaker 4: When she droves you up.
[18:22] Speaker 6: You get out of the car.
[18:23] Speaker 4: She drives off. Do you have any idea where she gets?
[18:26] Speaker 13: I have you know?
[18:29] Speaker 2: Peter does say that he tried to make sure Shenise
[18:32] Speaker 2: was all right.
[18:34] Speaker 7: He started trying to text her, trying to call her
[18:37] Speaker 7: to make ammence with her.
[18:40] Speaker 12: Peter says she wasn't responding.
[18:43] Speaker 4: Did she say anything about hurting herself?
[18:45] Speaker 6: She before?
[18:47] Speaker 9: What did she said before?
[18:50] Speaker 13: Kid? Why?
[18:51] Speaker 10: Why she said out to keep what she was with
[18:54] Speaker 10: mom dad?
[18:56] Speaker 6: Peter said he never thought she was serious about it.
[19:01] Speaker 7: Well, we usually wondering what happened. Did this argument truly
[19:05] Speaker 7: lead to them killing themselves?
[19:08] Speaker 2: Detectives have their doubts.
[19:11] Speaker 4: She didn't go stay with the story said, and he
[19:13] Speaker 4: drops you all over there?
[19:14] Speaker 2: Yeah?
[19:15] Speaker 3: Where do you go from there?
[19:17] Speaker 6: Is said he spent the night at his mother's house.
[19:19] Speaker 6: He didn't go anywhere else. Get high.
[19:24] Speaker 2: Peter says he spent much of the rest of the
[19:26] Speaker 2: night doing damage control.
[19:28] Speaker 12: I would take a high.
[19:31] Speaker 5: And then it takes you back.
[19:34] Speaker 8: Nah, I'll get no repied.
[19:36] Speaker 9: But I'm thinking I'm do not diserve you know.
[19:39] Speaker 4: What I'm saying now at this point was do you mind?
[19:43] Speaker 4: We just want to make a copy of your messages
[19:46] Speaker 4: and download the copy of your phone for the case.
[19:49] Speaker 4: Is that alright with you? And he said, yeah, that's fine.
[19:54] Speaker 2: When detectives look through the data, it matches what he
[19:58] Speaker 2: told them.
[19:59] Speaker 7: It shall he had been trying to tect Chenese after
[20:02] Speaker 7: the argument happened.
[20:05] Speaker 12: Shenise wasn't respinding.
[20:07] Speaker 2: Peter's mother also confirms the story when detectives follow up
[20:11] Speaker 2: with her.
[20:14] Speaker 3: Peter's mom does confirm that he did get dropped off
[20:17] Speaker 3: that evening.
[20:19] Speaker 6: However, she couldn't say with certainty that it was Sheanice
[20:22] Speaker 6: who dropped off Peter.
[20:24] Speaker 7: What she saw were some headlights out of her window.
[20:28] Speaker 7: She didn't see the car. She didn't see Shenis, But
[20:31] Speaker 7: she's like, my son could not have done anything. He's innocent.
[20:35] Speaker 6: They basically ruled out their only possible suspect.
[20:39] Speaker 2: And when the autopsy report comes in, it will eliminate
[20:44] Speaker 2: another theory.
[20:46] Speaker 3: What it indicates that is no way that the wound
[20:49] Speaker 3: was self inflicted.
[20:51] Speaker 9: This was not a suicide.
[20:54] Speaker 6: Sheanis's sister was right, it was murder.
[21:01] Speaker 1: Stay tuned for more of the Fatal Attraction podcast.
[21:10] Speaker 2: Based on the autopsy report, detectives in Mobile, Alabama have
[21:15] Speaker 2: definitively ruled out suicide as the cause of death for
[21:19] Speaker 2: twenty seven year old Sheanie Sumpter.
[21:22] Speaker 13: The Optopsy report provided information that was inconsistent with suicide.
[21:30] Speaker 5: Where the bullet entered, it was impossible for her to
[21:34] Speaker 5: have shot herself in the head in that angle.
[21:38] Speaker 2: The angle of the bullet wound is an all that
[21:41] Speaker 2: rules out suicide.
[21:42] Speaker 13: Either Sheanie's hand didn't have any evidence of gunpowder. If
[21:48] Speaker 13: you use a gun and shoot the gun, there would
[21:51] Speaker 13: be residue on your hand.
[21:56] Speaker 2: The autopsy findings or a vindication for Shanie's family, who
[22:00] Speaker 2: never believed her death was the result of suicide.
[22:04] Speaker 5: She would tell you how she felt. She was very verbal,
[22:07] Speaker 5: so I just wouldn't have believed it.
[22:10] Speaker 10: I had no doubt in my mind that it was
[22:12] Speaker 10: a homiciety.
[22:14] Speaker 2: Which leaves detectives with one big question to answer.
[22:19] Speaker 4: If it was staged to look like a suicide, then
[22:22] Speaker 4: who's responsible.
[22:24] Speaker 13: From the information we have, the likely suspect is Peter.
[22:28] Speaker 13: He was the one that was with her, but.
[22:33] Speaker 2: He's already been ruled out.
[22:36] Speaker 6: Detectives have checked his phone, which showed he was being
[22:38] Speaker 6: honest about the call from his other girlfriend and the
[22:41] Speaker 6: argument that ensued with Shenie.
[22:44] Speaker 13: Peter's mom did verify that Peter did come home the
[22:48] Speaker 13: night of the incident.
[22:50] Speaker 6: There were several follow up texts to Shenie begging for forgiveness.
[22:55] Speaker 2: However, the admitted argument does give detectives one more.
[23:00] Speaker 12: Had Ashley eliminated her rival.
[23:06] Speaker 2: When detectives bring her in for questioning, Ashley starts by
[23:09] Speaker 2: asking why they want to talk to her or her
[23:12] Speaker 2: she killed herself?
[23:14] Speaker 9: Where'd you hear that?
[23:15] Speaker 10: That's what everybody's saying.
[23:17] Speaker 13: She was rather casual about the fact that Shenise was
[23:22] Speaker 13: no longer alive. She didn't give the impression that she
[23:25] Speaker 13: felt sorry or anything. That is typical for someone who
[23:29] Speaker 13: hears that someone's life has ended.
[23:32] Speaker 4: When you interview a lot of people and you've worked
[23:35] Speaker 4: a lot of cases, you start to pick up on
[23:37] Speaker 4: people's body language.
[23:40] Speaker 8: So no tears for Shenise.
[23:42] Speaker 3: I never met her.
[23:44] Speaker 7: She tells to take this. I don't know that she.
[23:46] Speaker 7: I don't know her. She means nothing to me. I
[23:49] Speaker 7: just had this thing going on with Peter.
[23:51] Speaker 8: Nise was with Peter in the car when you called
[23:54] Speaker 8: one day.
[23:55] Speaker 9: Did that make you mad?
[23:56] Speaker 13: Oh?
[23:56] Speaker 12: I was mad, but not at her.
[23:59] Speaker 13: She's mad about the fact that Peter had flew her off,
[24:02] Speaker 13: but she wasn't upset that he had another girl. Ashley
[24:07] Speaker 13: says that hers and Peter's relationship was just off and all,
[24:11] Speaker 13: and it was nothing serious.
[24:13] Speaker 3: It was almost as if Ashley just knew a role.
[24:15] Speaker 3: She wasn't emotionally attached to the situation, So no revenge.
[24:20] Speaker 10: Oh I got even.
[24:22] Speaker 7: With him, Ashley tells them. I was upset, so I
[24:26] Speaker 7: decided to call up another friend of mine.
[24:29] Speaker 2: According to Ashley, her other friend had stayed the night too.
[24:34] Speaker 13: She wanted to make Peter feel jealous, to show him
[24:37] Speaker 13: that he's not the only option.
[24:39] Speaker 8: Thank you, Ashley.
[24:42] Speaker 2: After talking to Ashley, the investigators check out her alibi
[24:47] Speaker 2: for Monday night.
[24:49] Speaker 3: They reached out to the god she said she was with.
[24:52] Speaker 3: He confirmed that he spent the night with her and
[24:54] Speaker 3: didn't leave until Tuesday.
[24:56] Speaker 12: Ashley couldn't have been the person to do.
[24:59] Speaker 2: This, and detectives are no closer to finding who did.
[25:04] Speaker 4: Nobody witnessed an incident occurred, nobody could tell us a
[25:07] Speaker 4: description of who the person was, and we're talking about
[25:10] Speaker 4: at this point in time, work behind on the investigation
[25:13] Speaker 4: because she's.
[25:14] Speaker 9: Been out there for about a day. By the time
[25:16] Speaker 9: we got.
[25:16] Speaker 2: Called, but soon after talking to Ashley, detectives receive another
[25:22] Speaker 2: call homicide.
[25:24] Speaker 6: The caller told detectives she was a coworker of Sheensis.
[25:28] Speaker 12: She provides some very vital information for this case.
[25:32] Speaker 10: There's something you ought to know about Peter.
[25:34] Speaker 7: She tells them that Peter was controlling. Peter would call
[25:38] Speaker 7: them tectionese all day long.
[25:42] Speaker 2: But that wasn't the worst of his behavior.
[25:45] Speaker 3: Sometimes she would come to work with ruses.
[25:49] Speaker 10: She said.
[25:50] Speaker 5: The relationship was becoming super, super abusive.
[26:00] Speaker 8: With us.
[26:00] Speaker 1: As we draw closer to the truth, this is a
[26:04] Speaker 1: Fatal Attraction podcast.
[26:09] Speaker 2: Yeah, a co worker of Sheanice Sumter has contacted detectives
[26:14] Speaker 2: with some disturbing information about Sheenice's boyfriend, Peter Gail's.
[26:19] Speaker 13: Sheanie's friend didn't exactly say that Peter was violent, but
[26:24] Speaker 13: it was enough information to allude to the fact that
[26:28] Speaker 13: this was an unhealthy relationship.
[26:31] Speaker 2: Had that unhealthy relationship ended with Sheanice's murder.
[26:36] Speaker 4: At least ten to fifteen percent of the cases that
[26:38] Speaker 4: we work are involved in domestic violence, and there's always
[26:42] Speaker 4: a history there of things that build up to it.
[26:45] Speaker 9: There's always signs.
[26:47] Speaker 5: And yes, something wasn't right, she said, Sheanie has been
[26:52] Speaker 5: wearing makeup. Sheanie was so beautiful, gorgeous skin, no flaws,
[26:57] Speaker 5: and for her to just start wearing makeup out of
[26:59] Speaker 5: the blue odd, because what are you covering?
[27:02] Speaker 10: What are you hiding?
[27:05] Speaker 2: Shenie's coworker thinks she knows the answer.
[27:09] Speaker 12: Shenise had shown up to work with bruises on her.
[27:13] Speaker 8: Did she tell you what happened? She says, you fell.
[27:17] Speaker 7: It would seem as if she was making up stories
[27:20] Speaker 7: about what truly happened.
[27:22] Speaker 2: However, according to her coworker, Shenie had finally come to
[27:27] Speaker 2: a decision.
[27:28] Speaker 10: Sheanise didn't want to end the relationship.
[27:31] Speaker 9: She was done with him and was over him.
[27:34] Speaker 2: And she'd found a way out.
[27:37] Speaker 13: Shenie's coworker provides the information that her job in Florida
[27:43] Speaker 13: was actually an opportunity for Shenise to get away from here.
[27:48] Speaker 4: She did take the steps to leave him, but she
[27:51] Speaker 4: couldn't quite completely get away.
[27:54] Speaker 8: All right, thank you?
[27:56] Speaker 13: Right?
[27:57] Speaker 2: Had Shenie been murdered by her boyfriend because she tried
[28:00] Speaker 2: to leave him? It seems plausible to detectives.
[28:05] Speaker 6: Peter had used his mother as his alibi, and that
[28:08] Speaker 6: was less than airtight.
[28:10] Speaker 2: In Searching through police records, detectives find proof of Peter's
[28:15] Speaker 2: alleged abuse.
[28:16] Speaker 5: I don't understand what's the issue now.
[28:19] Speaker 4: Four days prior to the homicide, Peter Gale's and she
[28:24] Speaker 4: niece had an.
[28:25] Speaker 3: Argument maybe I don't want you to come.
[28:27] Speaker 4: Up where he busted her lip, and she called the police.
[28:33] Speaker 10: He's over, She's about to put him in jail.
[28:36] Speaker 2: But when the police arrived, Peter was gone and Shenie
[28:41] Speaker 2: had lost her nerve.
[28:43] Speaker 9: She did make a report.
[28:44] Speaker 4: However, in that report, she did try to protect him
[28:47] Speaker 4: by giving some wrong information about him.
[28:51] Speaker 3: Okay, what's his name?
[28:53] Speaker 10: His name is Peter, Peter Smith. Basically let him run fring.
[29:00] Speaker 4: Obviously, she was scared about the situation that she was in,
[29:04] Speaker 4: but at the same time she was scared of him
[29:07] Speaker 4: and didn't want him to get in trouble.
[29:11] Speaker 2: Now, a murder suspect, Peter is in far more trouble,
[29:16] Speaker 2: and when detectives so poena his phone records, the evidence
[29:19] Speaker 2: against him becomes stronger.
[29:22] Speaker 7: When the officers pulled the phone records, they saw the hey,
[29:26] Speaker 7: there's a phone number on here that's not on this phone.
[29:30] Speaker 4: We could tell Peter had gone through and deleted text
[29:33] Speaker 4: messages out of his phone.
[29:38] Speaker 2: The deleted messages went to a man named Isaiah Stewart.
[29:42] Speaker 13: What was the conversation that Peter and Isaiah had that
[29:46] Speaker 13: he didn't want police to know about?
[29:49] Speaker 2: In an interrogation room, Isaiah admits that Peter had contacted
[29:53] Speaker 2: him on the night of the murder.
[29:56] Speaker 13: Isaiah said said the conversation was about how mad sheenie
[30:00] Speaker 13: about the call from Ashley.
[30:03] Speaker 10: I told him he should have been more careful with
[30:04] Speaker 10: his phone.
[30:05] Speaker 8: That's funny to you.
[30:07] Speaker 3: I mean, not before I knew what happened.
[30:10] Speaker 13: Isaiah says that he heard that she needs killed herself.
[30:13] Speaker 10: Peter tell you that, nah, I mean that's what everybody
[30:17] Speaker 10: was saying.
[30:18] Speaker 13: The police inform him that knows she needs to not
[30:20] Speaker 13: kill herself.
[30:22] Speaker 10: Wait, really, she was.
[30:24] Speaker 8: Murdered and we have reason to believe Peter was responsible.
[30:31] Speaker 3: No way.
[30:32] Speaker 2: But when detectives keep pressing, Isaiah starts just sweat.
[30:37] Speaker 4: There were definitely a lot of signs when talking to
[30:39] Speaker 4: him that he was not being honest.
[30:42] Speaker 7: Isaiah was like, whoa, I'm getting in way over my
[30:45] Speaker 7: head with this look.
[30:46] Speaker 8: I had no idea about what about what all he did?
[30:51] Speaker 3: He denies that he knows anything about what happened.
[30:55] Speaker 2: All Isaiah can confirmed is that he gave Peter a ride.
[31:00] Speaker 6: He said Peter texted him, told him where to meet.
[31:04] Speaker 3: He picked him up on the side of the road,
[31:06] Speaker 3: not too far from the crime scene.
[31:09] Speaker 13: He then takes him to his mother's house and drops
[31:12] Speaker 13: him off.
[31:15] Speaker 2: That's not what Peter told detectives.
[31:19] Speaker 13: The story that Peter gave the police to us that
[31:22] Speaker 13: Shaniz dropped him off at his mom's house.
[31:25] Speaker 8: Here you go.
[31:27] Speaker 2: Now that detectives can place Peter near the crime scene,
[31:31] Speaker 2: they asked him to come in for another interview.
[31:34] Speaker 6: Say, we're not accusing.
[31:36] Speaker 9: You of vini him. You know, obviously at.
[31:38] Speaker 4: This point we're just playing along like he's a victim
[31:42] Speaker 4: that his girlfriend was killed by somebody or killed herself.
[31:46] Speaker 2: But it isn't long before the gloves come off.
[31:49] Speaker 4: We shifted the interview and them confronting him on everything
[31:53] Speaker 4: that he told us.
[31:55] Speaker 8: Everything that's coming out is not what you're saying, okay, and.
[31:59] Speaker 4: We already know that, and this is what happens.
[32:03] Speaker 9: We already know, okay.
[32:06] Speaker 7: They tell him, Isaiah, let us know that he picked
[32:10] Speaker 7: you up from near the crime scene and dropped you
[32:13] Speaker 7: off at your mother's house.
[32:15] Speaker 8: I want you to be honest with you and just
[32:18] Speaker 8: tell me what happened.
[32:20] Speaker 2: Faced with what Isaiah told the investigators, Peter starts to
[32:24] Speaker 2: break but it's what he tells them the truth.
[32:30] Speaker 6: She tried to jump on men. He claimed that during
[32:33] Speaker 6: their argument over the phone call, she grabbed the gun
[32:36] Speaker 6: and attacked him.
[32:38] Speaker 12: He tried to take it away.
[32:41] Speaker 3: They struggle with the weapon.
[32:43] Speaker 2: She was trying to.
[32:44] Speaker 7: Jump over about like Chilo fighting the gun accidentally goes off.
[32:56] Speaker 1: Stay tuned for more of the Fatal Attraction podcast.
[33:04] Speaker 2: Peter Gales has just admitted to police and Mobile Alabama
[33:08] Speaker 2: that he was with his girlfriend, Shechanie Sumter when she
[33:12] Speaker 2: was shunned. He insists her death wasn't murder.
[33:17] Speaker 13: Peter says that Shanie's death was an accident.
[33:21] Speaker 3: He indicates that after the call came in from Ashley,
[33:25] Speaker 3: him and Chanice getting into the sentence argument, and during
[33:28] Speaker 3: the argument, Chanice opens the glove box and pulls out
[33:31] Speaker 3: the thirty eight revolver, rather just having.
[33:37] Speaker 13: Peter begins to push her away, shoving her off, trying
[33:41] Speaker 13: to keep himself safe.
[33:44] Speaker 5: He said that they were struggling over the murder webbon
[33:48] Speaker 5: and it accidentally went off.
[33:54] Speaker 8: I love, oh my, this whole right here.
[34:02] Speaker 13: Peter admits that once the incident occurred, he was shocked.
[34:07] Speaker 10: He was confused.
[34:09] Speaker 3: Because all like everybody, oh, thank God's children.
[34:14] Speaker 2: So he tried to make it go away.
[34:18] Speaker 9: He drove her all the way down to the abandoned
[34:20] Speaker 9: house and parked the card.
[34:22] Speaker 3: What'd you do from there?
[34:27] Speaker 2: How'd you leave?
[34:29] Speaker 11: And be honest with me?
[34:30] Speaker 3: Name is a right.
[34:33] Speaker 12: Peter admits that he made a call to Isaiah to
[34:37] Speaker 12: pick him up.
[34:39] Speaker 6: Yeah, no, cluse give me that.
[34:42] Speaker 11: No colourse.
[34:44] Speaker 2: Detective suspect that may be the case, but they have
[34:47] Speaker 2: no doubt that Peter is lying about the shooting.
[34:51] Speaker 4: We believe that he intentionally shot her in the head
[34:55] Speaker 4: and killed her.
[34:57] Speaker 2: Once the interview is over, detectives placed Peter under arrest
[35:02] Speaker 2: for murder.
[35:03] Speaker 8: Yeah.
[35:04] Speaker 4: When he was taken into custom he didn't have any
[35:06] Speaker 4: remorse for the only remorse he had was that he
[35:09] Speaker 4: got caught.
[35:11] Speaker 5: Now we just need complete justice and get him sentence
[35:14] Speaker 5: for what he did to my sister.
[35:18] Speaker 2: When Peter goes on trial on May twenty fourth, twenty
[35:21] Speaker 2: twenty one, the prosecutor begins by explaining what triggered the
[35:26] Speaker 2: argument that led to Shenie's death.
[35:31] Speaker 10: Peter was driving and his phone was beneath it to
[35:34] Speaker 10: the bluetooth. A call came through. It was from a woman.
[35:42] Speaker 12: Who the hell is that?
[35:43] Speaker 8: Who? Who is that?
[35:44] Speaker 6: Stars imagining Shenese in that moment listening to another woman
[35:49] Speaker 6: booty call her man, It had to be pretty gallic, but.
[35:55] Speaker 2: It was also an opportunity.
[35:57] Speaker 12: You know what, get me out of here.
[35:59] Speaker 5: I'm done.
[36:02] Speaker 6: Shenise had been looking to get out of the relationship,
[36:04] Speaker 6: and this must have looked like the perfect excuse to
[36:07] Speaker 6: end things.
[36:08] Speaker 12: Pull over right now, let me out.
[36:10] Speaker 10: I'm not playing with you, Peter.
[36:12] Speaker 3: If she really needs you, then maybe you shouldn't come
[36:14] Speaker 3: to floor.
[36:14] Speaker 13: That's how you feel.
[36:16] Speaker 4: At that point, she probably had told him something along
[36:19] Speaker 4: the lines of I'm done with you.
[36:21] Speaker 9: What this is over with? And that enraged him.
[36:24] Speaker 2: I'm done.
[36:25] Speaker 8: Oh you're done.
[36:26] Speaker 3: Good, I'm done.
[36:27] Speaker 10: I'm I can't do this anymore.
[36:28] Speaker 5: I'm done.
[36:31] Speaker 3: In a moment of rage, Peter pulls out the thirty
[36:34] Speaker 3: eight Revolver Peter and then he shot her in the head.
[36:44] Speaker 2: After she was dead, Peter drove south out of town
[36:48] Speaker 2: to dump the car and the body.
[36:50] Speaker 6: He abandoned the car behind an empty house with Shenie
[36:53] Speaker 6: still in the passenger seat, and then he called his
[36:56] Speaker 6: friend Isaiah Stewart to drive him to his mother's house.
[37:00] Speaker 3: He did everything he could to distance himself from it.
[37:04] Speaker 13: He sent her faith text messages to make it seem
[37:07] Speaker 13: like they worked together.
[37:09] Speaker 2: He also sent messages designed to make it appear like
[37:12] Speaker 2: she'd killed herself.
[37:14] Speaker 4: He'd sent text messages basically saying, don't hurt yourself like
[37:18] Speaker 4: you threatened to do, so that it would make us
[37:21] Speaker 4: believe that she was suicide.
[37:25] Speaker 2: The medical examiner had ruled out suicide, so Peter's defense
[37:30] Speaker 2: attorney is forced to fall back on what he'd eventually
[37:33] Speaker 2: admitted to the police.
[37:35] Speaker 3: The defense attempted to use Peter's story of it being accidental.
[37:40] Speaker 7: The defense is trying to spend the case as if
[37:43] Speaker 7: Peter was trying to keep Sanis from shooting him and
[37:46] Speaker 7: so the gun went off.
[37:50] Speaker 2: But in closing, the prosecution says the evidence leaves no
[37:54] Speaker 2: doubt that Peter had intentionally killed Shenice.
[37:58] Speaker 7: All of Peter's actions were very deliberate so that he
[38:02] Speaker 7: wouldn't be seen as the person who committed this crime.
[38:08] Speaker 2: After their deliberations, the jury sees what Peter had tried
[38:12] Speaker 2: so hard to conceal.
[38:15] Speaker 9: Peter Gales was found guilty of murders.
[38:19] Speaker 10: That sentence seen me.
[38:20] Speaker 5: I spoke on the stand and said, if he get
[38:24] Speaker 5: out of jail, he's going to do it again, So
[38:26] Speaker 5: please do not let this man out on the streets again.
[38:30] Speaker 10: And the judge ultimately gave him life in prison.
[38:35] Speaker 2: Not that any amount of present time can make up
[38:39] Speaker 2: for what Peter did.
