[0:01] Speaker 1: And That's what you really missed with Jenna.
[0:04] Speaker 2: And Kevin and iHeartRadio podcast.
[0:08] Speaker 1: Welcome to and That's what you Really miss podcast recap addition,
[0:14] Speaker 1: The one and only. This is a big one, Jenna,
[0:16] Speaker 1: really big one, one of the biggest, Yeah, breaking records,
[0:20] Speaker 1: cap Hop Demon Hunters.
[0:22] Speaker 2: Finally our first time.
[0:24] Speaker 1: It's sad because like I was reading our you know,
[0:27] Speaker 1: little research document before and I was like, oh my god,
[0:31] Speaker 1: this came out in June. Yeah it is. I was like,
[0:36] Speaker 1: how did we miss that boat? Oftentimes, though, I will
[0:40] Speaker 1: say I will wait until the hype is done and
[0:42] Speaker 1: then I will watch something that's fair. So this tracks
[0:47] Speaker 1: for me. I feel like you would have seen this already.
[0:50] Speaker 2: Kevin, Yeah, I didn't because I was waiting for this.
[0:54] Speaker 1: Okay, we knew, we knew it was coming. Yeah, this
[0:57] Speaker 1: is Demon Hunters, wasn't it.
[0:59] Speaker 2: I was going to cheat on you and watch it before,
[1:02] Speaker 2: but I knew i'd have to watch it again because
[1:04] Speaker 2: my memory is, yeah, you good enough to retain anything.
[1:07] Speaker 1: Thousand. Okay, this is capop Demon Hunters. Let's just do it.
[1:11] Speaker 1: The premiere date of this was June twentieth, twenty twenty five,
[1:15] Speaker 1: not so long ago.
[1:17] Speaker 2: No, Number one song in the country was Ordinary by
[1:21] Speaker 2: Alex Warren.
[1:21] Speaker 1: Of course, number one movie was twenty eight years later.
[1:24] Speaker 1: I don't even know how many movies they've done of this, Fraguic.
[1:28] Speaker 2: This was the third twenty eight Yes, it's but they've
[1:32] Speaker 2: now done like one or two more since this too.
[1:34] Speaker 1: No, this has to be more than that. I know
[1:36] Speaker 1: this was a hundred of these.
[1:38] Speaker 2: It was twenty eight days, twenty eight or was it
[1:41] Speaker 2: twenty eight days, twenty eight weeks, twenty eight years?
[1:46] Speaker 1: I know something like that, Okay, well felt.
[1:49] Speaker 2: On June of twenty twenty five, we were recapping season
[1:52] Speaker 2: six episode eight, a wedding and season six episode nine.
[1:56] Speaker 1: Child star Kevin was also in London doing the from
[1:59] Speaker 1: Wow on your musical Bitter Run. Oh okay. This was
[2:09] Speaker 1: written by Maggie King and Chris Apple Hans And this
[2:13] Speaker 1: is a musical movie and this is is this our
[2:16] Speaker 1: first animated musical movie, Kevin, that were.
[2:19] Speaker 2: Very Finally, there's so many I want to do.
[2:23] Speaker 1: I mean they are on rotation in my house, so
[2:27] Speaker 1: let's get into them. Very exciting. This this was music
[2:36] Speaker 1: first for me. I've listened to this music. I listened
[2:38] Speaker 1: to this music every day. Yes, Emma, No, it's everywhere
[2:41] Speaker 1: to Eversum.
[2:43] Speaker 2: I heard it say the Nai Salon.
[2:44] Speaker 1: Yeah, it's it's it's it's killing, it's making and killing,
[2:49] Speaker 1: and it's doing really well. There's just a million writers
[2:52] Speaker 1: on this incredible, incredible songwriters throughout this entire album and
[2:57] Speaker 1: throughout this entire movie.
[2:59] Speaker 2: And Oscar nominated e J and Mark sonom Blick, who
[3:02] Speaker 2: wrote Golden and produced Golden. I think I've been the
[3:06] Speaker 2: most visually out there for obvious reasons, yep, and also
[3:10] Speaker 2: like hearing their stories is great. Mark sono Blick also
[3:14] Speaker 2: wrote the music and theater Camp, which was so good.
[3:17] Speaker 2: Have you ever seen it? Oh?
[3:19] Speaker 1: Yeah, so good? Oh of course I've seen it, Okay,
[3:22] Speaker 1: just making sure No, I know, I know, I mean,
[3:25] Speaker 1: there's a theater movie. I'm seeing it and it's then. So.
[3:28] Speaker 2: The film was animated by Sony Pictures Image Works with
[3:31] Speaker 2: Josh Beveridge as animation director. I really enjoyed the animation style.
[3:37] Speaker 2: It was not what I thought it would be.
[3:39] Speaker 1: Really, what did you expect?
[3:41] Speaker 2: I think because I've only seen small clips and you know,
[3:44] Speaker 2: like still images of it. I think the way, like
[3:49] Speaker 2: how the movement is, it's not just like a straightforward
[3:54] Speaker 2: style of animation that I thought it might be.
[3:58] Speaker 1: Got it, got it? Yeah, it was really really good. Yes,
[4:05] Speaker 1: like I get it good again. There's the voices of
[4:11] Speaker 1: the characters, and then there are the singing voices, so like,
[4:16] Speaker 1: for example, Ardent Show is roomy, and then e J
[4:19] Speaker 1: does Rumy singing voice. Also notably like uh my mayhng
[4:27] Speaker 1: is Mira and then Audrey Na plays Mira singing voice.
[4:32] Speaker 1: So there's all these different voices. Especially also Lea Salanga
[4:37] Speaker 1: makes a cameo. Oh yeah, Daniel Day Kim's in this,
[4:43] Speaker 1: Ken Jong is Bobby joking Booster. It's so good, so good.
[4:49] Speaker 1: The songs are how It's Done, Golden, Soda Pop, take Time,
[5:00] Speaker 1: Free Your Idol, and what it sounds like. I can't
[5:04] Speaker 1: believe it's only those songs I know, because there's little
[5:08] Speaker 1: like interludes within the film as well. So I was like, oh,
[5:11] Speaker 1: I've heard that before, Like.
[5:12] Speaker 2: Golden comes back like three times and then she does
[5:15] Speaker 2: a papella ones.
[5:17] Speaker 1: Love Golden, I Love Golden. My Emma's favorite song is
[5:23] Speaker 1: how It's Done, and then and then take Down and
[5:27] Speaker 1: then Golden.
[5:29] Speaker 2: I did not know there was a boy band in
[5:31] Speaker 2: this movie.
[5:33] Speaker 1: I got it. Now I've seen clips, I've seen you know,
[5:36] Speaker 1: hearing Soda Pop of course, and now.
[5:38] Speaker 2: I'm like, oh, make a lot more sense.
[5:40] Speaker 1: Now everything makes more sense. I'm listening to this album like, oh,
[5:44] Speaker 1: I know what's happening. I understand.
[5:47] Speaker 2: Okay, So the official summary for this movie when K
[5:50] Speaker 2: pop superstars Roomy, Mirra, and Zoe aren't selling out stadiums,
[5:53] Speaker 2: they're using their secret powers to protect their fans from
[5:56] Speaker 2: supernatural threats.
[5:58] Speaker 1: This became such a global phenomenon so quickly, and it
[6:04] Speaker 1: went on to become the most watched original title in
[6:07] Speaker 1: Netflix history, surpassing five hundred million views worldwide. Are you kidding? Yeah,
[6:15] Speaker 1: it's pretty amazing. And I think I've told this story
[6:17] Speaker 1: maybe when we were interviewing somebody. But we were at
[6:21] Speaker 1: Emma's preschool and they did this Christmas party and all
[6:25] Speaker 1: the kids were it was all our age. They were
[6:27] Speaker 1: listening to it at school. They were like, you know,
[6:30] Speaker 1: at home whatever. Her tiny little preschool of like three
[6:35] Speaker 1: four and five year olds. They have glow sticks. There's
[6:39] Speaker 1: a DJ, one of the teachers DJ. The lights are
[6:41] Speaker 1: out and they're screaming their heads off, jumping up and
[6:47] Speaker 1: down to golden and my little heart exploded, like I
[6:53] Speaker 1: didn't think it could explode anymore. And it was like, wow,
[6:58] Speaker 1: all these different kids, is it's verse in like, you know,
[7:01] Speaker 1: all these different ethnicities. But like watching little Emma, who's
[7:04] Speaker 1: half Korean stand with this like me thing, jumping up
[7:10] Speaker 1: and down screaming the words of this song. I was like,
[7:12] Speaker 1: she will never understand what it took for this to
[7:16] Speaker 1: happen and for how far we've come and how meaningful
[7:20] Speaker 1: it is. And it's so it's normal for her that
[7:24] Speaker 1: K pop is just popular and wildly accepted. And it
[7:28] Speaker 1: was like I was like, I am not okay, this
[7:31] Speaker 1: is so cool. This is so so cool, Like she
[7:34] Speaker 1: has no idea.
[7:35] Speaker 2: That's wild to think about too, because I think for
[7:37] Speaker 2: so many of us it also transcends like age this movie,
[7:43] Speaker 2: everybody loves it. But I think, yes, for a lot
[7:47] Speaker 2: of us, we can take it for granted because you're like, oh,
[7:49] Speaker 2: we love K pop and it's become popular and it's
[7:51] Speaker 2: like this is just another movie. Yeah, But for a
[7:54] Speaker 2: whole generation of kids, yeah, this is going to be
[7:59] Speaker 2: like a foundational and there's childhood that they're going to
[8:01] Speaker 2: have for the rest of their life that they're going
[8:02] Speaker 2: to know these songs. They're gonna be able to talk
[8:04] Speaker 2: about it. And it's a movie, like it's a movie
[8:09] Speaker 2: with Korean characters, it's Korean culture in it, there's Korean
[8:12] Speaker 2: language in it.
[8:12] Speaker 1: It's so cool. It's really really and you're like, well,
[8:18] Speaker 1: there needs to be more because look people love it.
[8:22] Speaker 2: Hello, Yeah, I like what is that. I don't even
[8:28] Speaker 2: know what that says about, Like the current state of
[8:31] Speaker 2: things where it's like.
[8:32] Speaker 1: Well, look at squid Game too.
[8:34] Speaker 2: Yes, And I think it's you have all these like
[8:37] Speaker 2: old white people in power, right, and like they've you know,
[8:42] Speaker 2: down the line. They're like, oh, look we're hiring people
[8:46] Speaker 2: who aren't white. That's great. But at the end of
[8:49] Speaker 2: the day, the default so often to like what they're
[8:54] Speaker 2: used to, which is something like.
[8:56] Speaker 1: This, yes, exactly, not taking the risk. It's risky, yes, and.
[9:01] Speaker 2: It's like it doesn't matter. Kids especially do not care
[9:05] Speaker 2: because the only you learn those prejudices and like.
[9:10] Speaker 1: They have no idea. This is what they're this is
[9:14] Speaker 1: what's coming out. This is what they love. It's good content.
[9:17] Speaker 1: It's like fun, it's got story, it's gotten arc, it's
[9:21] Speaker 1: got characters. It's like it's.
[9:24] Speaker 2: It's really good as well. Yeah, yeah, I think it
[9:27] Speaker 2: really does. I think like when we were growing up,
[9:30] Speaker 2: I feel like there were so many movies or like
[9:36] Speaker 2: animated things like that where it was either oh, it's
[9:38] Speaker 2: really wholesome, but it's not cool, right right, or if
[9:44] Speaker 2: it's really cool, it's sort of it's it's an edging
[9:48] Speaker 2: on like not providing like good representations children, and so
[9:52] Speaker 2: like this has everything. It like walks that line so
[9:57] Speaker 2: beautifully where you have these characters who are work king
[10:02] Speaker 2: and they love their fans. It's like a really it's
[10:04] Speaker 2: a really big fan service thing, like oh we need
[10:07] Speaker 2: a break, We're like, no, we don't, because we actually
[10:08] Speaker 2: just want to be with our fans so much. So
[10:10] Speaker 2: I also think it helps like create a healthy fan culture.
[10:14] Speaker 1: Yep, yep, yep. And then also like this like the
[10:21] Speaker 1: messaging of like identity and like hiding who you are
[10:25] Speaker 1: and being breaking open and you know, kind of just
[10:29] Speaker 1: being your true self and that being you know, that's.
[10:33] Speaker 2: Your real superpower.
[10:34] Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, yeah, your flaws and your you know, faults,
[10:37] Speaker 1: et cetera, and just and accepting those and loving them.
[10:41] Speaker 2: And then there's that good. There's a old adage of
[10:45] Speaker 2: why musicals are so special and still are necessary and
[10:50] Speaker 2: still work of the feeling you can get from hearing
[10:55] Speaker 2: a song. It's just so different. Look, I'm not religious
[11:00] Speaker 2: at all. Yeah, but if you play me some gospel music.
[11:05] Speaker 1: You mean take me to chrick Yeah.
[11:06] Speaker 2: Well yeah, like the I will have chills and goosebumps,
[11:09] Speaker 2: and I will feel connected to whoever's singing and whoever's around.
[11:13] Speaker 2: It's like there's something music can provide that the intangible
[11:16] Speaker 2: that we will never be able to I think fully articulate. Yep,
[11:19] Speaker 2: but like that's what this movie because the music and
[11:25] Speaker 2: story work so flawlessly together. Yep, it makes it. I
[11:30] Speaker 2: think that magic special sauce.
[11:33] Speaker 1: Yeah, and the soundtrack is such a massive success. It
[11:37] Speaker 1: became the first film soundtrack to have four songs simultaneously
[11:41] Speaker 1: in the top ten of Billboard Hot one hundred and
[11:44] Speaker 1: earning double platinum certification in the US by October of
[11:47] Speaker 1: twenty twenty five, just like a few months after it premiered.
[11:51] Speaker 1: That's crazy.
[11:52] Speaker 2: Kevin Golden also became the first K pop song ever
[11:56] Speaker 2: to win a Grammy this year.
[11:59] Speaker 1: Ah wow, yeah, wow.
[12:03] Speaker 2: Absolutely nuts. And it probably will win the Oscar.
[12:06] Speaker 1: Yeah, and it's it's winning every it's it's sweeping, it's
[12:09] Speaker 1: it's cleaning up.
[12:10] Speaker 2: And even if it doesn't win the Oscar, it doesn't matter.
[12:12] Speaker 1: That's I mean, it won the Critics Choice Golden Globes.
[12:18] Speaker 1: The film won Best Animated Feature and Best Regional Songs
[12:20] Speaker 1: for the Golden Globes. That kind of like kick started
[12:22] Speaker 1: this whole thing again after it being such a massive
[12:25] Speaker 1: success for Netflix in June. But the parents that like,
[12:32] Speaker 1: we were like, oh my god, everybody wants K pop
[12:35] Speaker 1: demon Hunters. Emma calls it cake pop demon Hunters. Sometimes
[12:40] Speaker 1: she hasn't seen the movie. She's a little too young,
[12:42] Speaker 1: but she loves the music. And every parent's like, oh yeah,
[12:46] Speaker 1: my daughter's obsessed with it. But at least it's good,
[12:50] Speaker 1: and you're like, yes, everybody wants to listen to this.
[12:52] Speaker 1: I don't mind that she wants to listen to this
[12:54] Speaker 1: on loop because it's good and we're all singing. We're
[12:57] Speaker 1: all singing along.
[12:58] Speaker 2: So I think what's also fascinating is that, like the
[13:03] Speaker 2: cultural impact. Obviously K pop has been growing, like your
[13:08] Speaker 2: veer in the US, the popularity around the world, not
[13:11] Speaker 2: just the US, but this movie, I think, you know,
[13:15] Speaker 2: there like a lot of that a lot of k pop,
[13:18] Speaker 2: most of K pop is made in Korea, like by Koreans,
[13:24] Speaker 2: and it has just like transcended that. But this movie
[13:26] Speaker 2: was mostly made by Korean people, but outside of Korea. Yeah,
[13:29] Speaker 2: while like still centering Korean culture and mythology and music.
[13:34] Speaker 2: And that's even what I think is the most fascinating part.
[13:37] Speaker 2: An animated movie about Korea has driven up tourism in
[13:40] Speaker 2: South Korea, so like the twenty twenty five tourism like
[13:46] Speaker 2: skyrocketed and people were going to the actual locations of
[13:51] Speaker 2: animated movie wow wowow. And like there's nothing better to
[13:55] Speaker 2: educate people of all ages than experiencing other cultures. Yes,
[14:01] Speaker 2: And I think, you know, a lot of like separation
[14:05] Speaker 2: and our politics in world today is like fear driven
[14:08] Speaker 2: and fear from the unknown or things that you have
[14:10] Speaker 2: not experienced yourself. And it's like it may seem silly
[14:14] Speaker 2: to say this, but like an animated you know, movie
[14:19] Speaker 2: for mostly children can really help bridge that gap, yep.
[14:26] Speaker 2: And it's like you should be visiting other places, you
[14:30] Speaker 2: should be interested in other cultures because there's so much
[14:32] Speaker 2: you can learn about yourself, so much other people, and
[14:34] Speaker 2: it makes you more empathetic and also it's just a great, greatposure. Yes.
[14:39] Speaker 1: I lak Djokovic also celebrated is when at the US
[14:42] Speaker 1: happened by doing the soda pop things at the end.
[14:47] Speaker 1: I was like, oh my god, even he's doing it.
[14:49] Speaker 1: And I hadn't obviously seen it yet, but I was like,
[14:51] Speaker 1: oh my god, this is wild. He has kids, so
[14:54] Speaker 1: it makes sense, but I thought that was fun. All
[14:57] Speaker 1: of our world's.
[15:00] Speaker 2: Or I've watched the movie, I have sort of been
[15:02] Speaker 2: obsessed with watching the real women who are the singing
[15:07] Speaker 2: voices of Hunterrick's and I remember when they went on
[15:10] Speaker 2: Jimmy Fallon. Yeah, I've literally watched I think all of
[15:14] Speaker 2: their life, also Jimmy Kimmel.
[15:16] Speaker 1: Their voices are great, and EJ's voice.
[15:20] Speaker 2: Is so high stupid like her voices.
[15:23] Speaker 1: I was like, I don't think I could hit this
[15:25] Speaker 1: on a good day, on my best day. It's crazy.
[15:30] Speaker 1: It's really they are so good, all the different versions
[15:34] Speaker 1: we listen to all of them.
[15:35] Speaker 2: I also think, like what this movie has not only
[15:38] Speaker 2: done for the public, but also like when you hear
[15:43] Speaker 2: EJ's story, she was a songwriter and she was always
[15:46] Speaker 2: told she wasn't gonna make it as like a K
[15:47] Speaker 2: pop star, so she became a songwriter, yeah, solely, and
[15:52] Speaker 2: then here she is like on every show on TV
[15:58] Speaker 2: singing the song that she wrote, winning all these awards
[16:01] Speaker 2: for it. And it's just like this movie keeps on
[16:04] Speaker 2: providing more and more like opportunities for great things to happen.
[16:09] Speaker 2: Mm hmmm, and like those are things you can never
[16:11] Speaker 2: ever ever plan for.
[16:13] Speaker 1: No, that's it. It's lightning in a bottle, right, and it's
[16:16] Speaker 1: fun to witness that. Yes, definitely, director Maggie King. She
[16:28] Speaker 1: designed Roomy like way before for a different project. Oh really, yeah,
[16:34] Speaker 1: it was artwork. Her husband is a director and a
[16:38] Speaker 1: story word artist, Radford Secrest, and then she was on
[16:45] Speaker 1: artwork on the bottom of a skateboard before Kang had
[16:49] Speaker 1: decided she was gonna She loved the character, and Kang's
[16:52] Speaker 1: daughter is now named Rumy, so Roomy really lives. Oh
[16:57] Speaker 1: my god, I think this is the most fun and
[17:00] Speaker 1: I like the King. She wanted to create female characters
[17:04] Speaker 1: who were powerful but also messy, funny and imperfect. Isn't
[17:07] Speaker 1: that the dream? Writing for real characters who represent real women.
[17:13] Speaker 1: They're not you know, they're not perfect, they're not polished,
[17:20] Speaker 1: but they're still loved, right, like I love this whole
[17:23] Speaker 1: thing and how it's these three women at the helme
[17:27] Speaker 1: of this film. I also was like, oh, this could
[17:31] Speaker 1: totally be a live action film, even though I obviously
[17:35] Speaker 1: it works better as an animated I think it could be.
[17:38] Speaker 1: I was like, Oh, I could see this.
[17:39] Speaker 2: I also like the like Maggie King has described the
[17:45] Speaker 2: movie as a love letter to K pop and her
[17:46] Speaker 2: Korean heritage and like leaning into like Korean culture mythology
[17:50] Speaker 2: socially like the shamanism, using music and dance as spiritual rituals.
[17:56] Speaker 1: And she the film was also inspired by the work
[18:00] Speaker 1: of Bom Junhole who did Parasite, who is like one
[18:03] Speaker 1: of my favorite directors of all time. And I was like, Okay,
[18:06] Speaker 1: this all is like this is everything.
[18:08] Speaker 2: Too, yeah, because he's able to like walk that line
[18:12] Speaker 2: that this movie does where there's humor, there's action, there's emotion,
[18:15] Speaker 2: and there's like a lot of depth and sort of
[18:18] Speaker 2: like the the obstacles they have to go through learning
[18:22] Speaker 2: about genius, like actual history, where like he presents it
[18:27] Speaker 2: as one thing and then like, oh, this is serious. Yeah,
[18:32] Speaker 2: but like kids aren't dumb.
[18:34] Speaker 1: No, that's no, we have to give them the chance, yes.
[18:37] Speaker 2: And it's like, let's let's see how we deal with
[18:39] Speaker 2: the truth of embracing the things. There's so much about
[18:42] Speaker 2: shame in this movie and like weaponizing shame and then
[18:46] Speaker 2: releasing that shame because don't need to carry that And like,
[18:51] Speaker 2: I don't know if I've seen the children's movie that
[18:53] Speaker 2: talks so openly about shame in that way.
[18:56] Speaker 1: No, definitely not.
[18:57] Speaker 2: And then tackles it. They run head and headfirst into that.
[19:00] Speaker 1: Yeah, I think the closest thing that I can think
[19:02] Speaker 1: of the most recent thing that has touched upon like
[19:06] Speaker 1: not shame, but love and self worth coming from inside
[19:09] Speaker 1: not out as like incanto.
[19:10] Speaker 2: Mh.
[19:12] Speaker 1: Like that reminded me of that piece of Like also, Kevin,
[19:17] Speaker 1: when you were talking about the the animation, Uh, they didn't.
[19:22] Speaker 1: They instead of following the hybrid two D three D
[19:25] Speaker 1: approach like Sony Spider Verse films, the team built the
[19:29] Speaker 1: movie on three D CGI, so it was in borrowing
[19:32] Speaker 1: from anime style expressions and stylization. So it's like kind
[19:36] Speaker 1: of this new format that they created, which is.
[19:40] Speaker 2: So cool, and it felt like that, like it felt
[19:42] Speaker 2: like it almost I think that's what I was surprised
[19:46] Speaker 2: by it because it looks three D, but it felt
[19:48] Speaker 2: two D and some of it it's like presentation in
[19:51] Speaker 2: a good way, and I think that's probably the stylization
[19:56] Speaker 2: is is where that shows the most, like yeah, just
[20:00] Speaker 2: the movements between characters and yeah, yeah. I also loved
[20:07] Speaker 2: the choreography. Oh, I mean the choreography was incredible in
[20:12] Speaker 2: this movie and was like so accurate.
[20:17] Speaker 1: It was so good. The ficial group hun Tricks, it
[20:19] Speaker 1: was modeled after like real K pop acts like Black
[20:22] Speaker 1: Pink obviously twice.
[20:24] Speaker 2: They were sort of like to me, they were like
[20:26] Speaker 2: this like the sisters of Big.
[20:30] Speaker 1: Bang, Yes, like they were that Yes and the Raval
[20:34] Speaker 1: boy bands, the Saga Boys. They drew inspiration from like BTS,
[20:38] Speaker 1: Stray Kids, Big Bang Also. Yeah, So the choreography was beautiful.
[20:45] Speaker 1: The numbers were beautiful. I also loved the tour, like
[20:50] Speaker 1: the meta tour aspect from like the beginning and throughout
[20:53] Speaker 1: the fandom of it, all of them speaking like to
[20:57] Speaker 1: the camera and confessional style about their love for the
[21:01] Speaker 1: He's giving me girls like you know a little Glee
[21:06] Speaker 1: three D Glee three D Yes, and I I really
[21:10] Speaker 1: I thought it was like it was a cool way
[21:13] Speaker 1: to us to get us into the universe. Of like
[21:16] Speaker 1: the fans, like the fans. It always comes back to
[21:19] Speaker 1: the fans of these groups and how they why they
[21:23] Speaker 1: do what they do right. It was a little meta,
[21:26] Speaker 1: but I loved it.
[21:28] Speaker 2: I also liked how, you know, the movie opens up
[21:32] Speaker 2: almost immediately with like their first battle with the demons,
[21:37] Speaker 2: and I like how there's not really a question of
[21:40] Speaker 2: how are we going to beat them? Ever?
[21:43] Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
[21:44] Speaker 2: If they're all in sync, you know and coordinated, like,
[21:50] Speaker 2: there's no way they're ever going to lose, right, they
[21:53] Speaker 2: get so powerful, the three of them are they just
[21:56] Speaker 2: had the plan even towards the end of the movie. Yeah.
[21:59] Speaker 2: The thing that they that makes them get in trouble
[22:01] Speaker 2: is that they separate and they say that through them
[22:04] Speaker 2: like she's we do everything in three part harmony, and
[22:06] Speaker 2: like that's how it works.
[22:08] Speaker 1: Mm hmmmmmmm.
[22:10] Speaker 2: And I really love how, like I hate you know,
[22:13] Speaker 2: when there's always that like seed of doubt in your head.
[22:16] Speaker 2: I'm like, are they going to do like all those
[22:18] Speaker 2: tropes and they didn't, like they didn't fall into that
[22:21] Speaker 2: thing of I didn't even think about it, like, oh,
[22:24] Speaker 2: they're almost going to be overrun, Like no, there's not
[22:26] Speaker 2: something even possible no question, because if they're locked in,
[22:29] Speaker 2: they they got it. Yeah, hits on hits on hits.
[22:33] Speaker 2: And I also like it was about like saving not
[22:36] Speaker 2: only their fans, but like all people through music and connection.
[22:43] Speaker 2: And it's like it's also about sort of like what
[22:46] Speaker 2: are you putting out into the world Because you have
[22:49] Speaker 2: the boy band that shows up and they have great songs,
[22:53] Speaker 2: but what is like their intentions behind their songs are
[22:57] Speaker 2: dark and sinister, right where all hunters this is intentions
[23:01] Speaker 2: always are like positive for the greater good, right, we
[23:06] Speaker 2: love everybody.
[23:06] Speaker 1: And like the lyrics the songwriting element within it too,
[23:10] Speaker 1: of watching them like create these songs, write these songs,
[23:13] Speaker 1: and she's like, the lyrics still aren't right, they aren't right,
[23:17] Speaker 1: And it gives this like extra level of like I
[23:19] Speaker 1: think to what we were saying earlier, of like this
[23:21] Speaker 1: understanding of like now when you hit the right lyrics,
[23:25] Speaker 1: there's meaning behind it, there's intention behind it, And now
[23:28] Speaker 1: as a viewer, I'm more appreciative and understanding of what
[23:34] Speaker 1: like the journey and then also what it means. It
[23:36] Speaker 1: was a sorry, I.
[23:37] Speaker 2: Can't sing this song because these lyrics don't resonate with
[23:40] Speaker 2: me right now exactly which is exactly very powerful and yeah,
[23:46] Speaker 2: and it's like also teaching kids how to like listen
[23:49] Speaker 2: to music and appreciate a lyric.
[23:52] Speaker 1: Yeah exactly. I did feel like I texted you at
[23:56] Speaker 1: one point through the film and was like, what else
[23:59] Speaker 1: could happen? Like we're an hour, Like there's an hour left,
[24:03] Speaker 1: I'm like, what else could could happen?
[24:05] Speaker 2: I had the exact at the exact same point, by
[24:08] Speaker 2: the way, checked how much was left. I was like, oh,
[24:11] Speaker 2: damn it.
[24:11] Speaker 1: Maybe I think there's something that lags in the middle
[24:14] Speaker 1: a little bit. It's like a piece too long, But
[24:17] Speaker 1: I get it, and I don't mind it. I just
[24:20] Speaker 1: had to get through that piece and then I was like, oh,
[24:22] Speaker 1: I'm back in. As soon as I like started again,
[24:24] Speaker 1: I was like, oh, I'm back in. But it's it's
[24:26] Speaker 1: like a little long for a kids film or like
[24:29] Speaker 1: a I guess it's an adult film that kids can watch.
[24:32] Speaker 1: But I appreciated the second half and it didn't like
[24:40] Speaker 1: the pacing was fine to me, it was right, It's
[24:43] Speaker 1: just like a little bit forever.
[24:46] Speaker 2: I could have watched these characters. I mean, they're obviously
[24:48] Speaker 2: going to make a sequel, but like, yeah, yeah, right, yeah,
[24:51] Speaker 2: I just I wanted to be in that world. Yeah,
[24:55] Speaker 2: it also was kind of scary, I thought, so I
[24:59] Speaker 2: was shocked at how scary some of this was.
[25:02] Speaker 1: Well, we watched a sample of this earlier, like around
[25:06] Speaker 1: maybe October, and both David and I were like, no,
[25:11] Speaker 1: we can't. No, it's like I can't you know, I
[25:14] Speaker 1: can't see it.
[25:15] Speaker 2: Well, it's like beautiful character design for the demons and like.
[25:18] Speaker 1: Totally and even the girls, like with their big expressions
[25:22] Speaker 1: when they're like yelling and the eyes and everything, it's
[25:24] Speaker 1: like a little scary, like I and it was, but
[25:28] Speaker 1: it was done beautifully.
[25:30] Speaker 2: Yeah, but I was imagining if like you're a little kid,
[25:35] Speaker 2: because you just.
[25:36] Speaker 1: Really yeah, well I will be like this is scary,
[25:39] Speaker 1: key fast forward. Yeah, but I don't even want her
[25:42] Speaker 1: to see it. Right. It's like the Grinch, I.
[25:46] Speaker 2: Think after you told me that about the Grinch, I
[25:50] Speaker 2: every time I saw the Grinch, I was like.
[25:52] Speaker 1: Every time, you better believe. I'm like, let's go.
[25:55] Speaker 2: He is scary.
[25:57] Speaker 1: He's so scary. I've seen a few characters on the
[25:59] Speaker 1: street who during the Christmas season and I was like,
[26:03] Speaker 1: get out of my way. You are scary. I don't
[26:05] Speaker 1: like you.
[26:06] Speaker 2: There was a point in this movie, and I'm not
[26:08] Speaker 2: saying this because we're a Glee podcast, but there was
[26:11] Speaker 2: a point during this movie.
[26:14] Speaker 1: We would have killed these songs.
[26:16] Speaker 2: I was thinking, like Golden would be like Rachel would
[26:21] Speaker 2: be like, well, this is my solo for competition. You'd
[26:23] Speaker 2: be like, are you kidding me?
[26:24] Speaker 1: It's giving it's giving a redo?
[26:27] Speaker 2: On, Well, did you and Rachel have a diva off?
[26:32] Speaker 1: What's the gollamn style? Yeah, it's a redo? Were giving
[26:35] Speaker 1: Gina redo?
[26:37] Speaker 2: Yes, it's like, no, let her, let her do the
[26:40] Speaker 2: only other Korean song we've ever done.
[26:42] Speaker 1: Ah, although it's very hack Yevin Jenna, I know, I know,
[26:48] Speaker 1: I know I could do it. It's it's not live.
[26:50] Speaker 2: Sure, that's fine.
[26:51] Speaker 1: She doesn't even option down every No.
[26:54] Speaker 2: She doesn't.
[26:55] Speaker 3: Did you hear it?
[26:56] Speaker 2: Like she said she was having like a freak out
[26:58] Speaker 2: before Jimmy fallon? Was she yes? And she didn't know
[27:02] Speaker 2: I for voices going to come out because her voice
[27:03] Speaker 2: was like so tired. Sure you're doing all the press
[27:06] Speaker 2: and everything. Oh my god, she sounded perfect. Its insane.
[27:10] Speaker 2: She sounds so good. That has to be like a
[27:11] Speaker 2: comfortable place for her, because that's crazy.
[27:14] Speaker 1: That is crazy.
[27:15] Speaker 2: Her voice must just live up there.
[27:17] Speaker 1: No, Golden would would have definitely been Anglee.
[27:19] Speaker 2: Can you imagine Golden as a competition song for the
[27:21] Speaker 2: Trouble Tones.
[27:23] Speaker 1: Can we just ask Adam Anders to do that for
[27:25] Speaker 1: us so we can hear it, because I would love
[27:27] Speaker 1: to see that.
[27:29] Speaker 2: I want it.
[27:30] Speaker 1: I need a revival. Also, the boys doing soda pop
[27:33] Speaker 1: definitely great, definitely do so. It's such a bop. I
[27:37] Speaker 1: love it. Emma used to be like fast forward this one.
[27:40] Speaker 1: I'm like no, no, no, no girl, But now we're
[27:43] Speaker 1: into it. We're into it now. Yeah, yeah, I I
[27:49] Speaker 1: I these songs are perfect. How are they going to
[27:52] Speaker 1: do this again? So I was sequel.
[27:57] Speaker 2: That's always your Here's what I think. I think, no
[28:00] Speaker 2: matter what, the music is going to still be great.
[28:04] Speaker 2: I think what you can't intentionally try to recreate is
[28:10] Speaker 2: like this moment that is currently happening for Golden.
[28:14] Speaker 1: Right, yes, yes, yeah, If you're chasing that, then you're
[28:18] Speaker 1: not doing this. Just make good music, right.
[28:21] Speaker 2: Because that's lightning in a bottle that just like one
[28:25] Speaker 2: in a million chants and it's happening. But I think
[28:28] Speaker 2: it's like Frozen two or like that. Music is still great. Yeah,
[28:31] Speaker 2: but like let it go? Do you want to build
[28:34] Speaker 2: a snowman? Were moments because it's the first time it happened.
[28:37] Speaker 1: Yeah, although we did do it with the Unknown, but
[28:40] Speaker 1: it was still wasn't no, it wasn't that, but it
[28:43] Speaker 1: will be like on the Heels, Yes, something excellent, but.
[28:48] Speaker 2: It's still going to be great music. Agreed. I'm definitely
[28:51] Speaker 2: going to because people, these people make great music. Like
[28:55] Speaker 2: that's just that's what's going to happen.
[28:58] Speaker 1: I can't get that beat out of my head from
[29:00] Speaker 1: I just it's too much.
[29:02] Speaker 2: And the nat salon today was the first time I've
[29:04] Speaker 2: heard of since watching the movie and it came on
[29:05] Speaker 2: and I was like, yes.
[29:08] Speaker 1: It's on repeat repeat. Can you blay eck pop demon
[29:12] Speaker 1: Unters please?
[29:13] Speaker 2: It's so cute like videos for dancing to it.
[29:18] Speaker 1: I'll get one. I'll get one. I also wanted to
[29:20] Speaker 1: put in. My brother told me way back when it
[29:24] Speaker 1: came out. He's like, if you guys do cap up
[29:26] Speaker 1: Demon Hunters, we will gladly contribute. My nieces are obsessed now.
[29:31] Speaker 1: I will tell you my nieces are white. This is exciting.
[29:34] Speaker 1: Like I'm like, I couldn't be more the help. But
[29:38] Speaker 1: they love it so I'm hoping to get a voice
[29:41] Speaker 1: memo that we can pop in here about like what
[29:45] Speaker 1: kids these age, you know, six and ten, and what
[29:49] Speaker 1: they're getting from it. So hopefully we'll be able to
[29:51] Speaker 1: pop something in here from them. They said they would
[29:53] Speaker 1: send it later, but I'm just cute. That's important, right,
[29:57] Speaker 1: Like I want to know like what they get from
[29:59] Speaker 1: it versus what we're getting from it, and because it's
[30:02] Speaker 1: such a phenomenon. Hi.
[30:04] Speaker 3: Everyone, my name is Chloe and I am six years old.
[30:08] Speaker 3: I love keepob Demon Hunters. I've seen it a million times.
[30:12] Speaker 3: My favorite character is Rumy, she's the leader and I
[30:15] Speaker 3: love her hair. My favorite song is Golden. I also
[30:19] Speaker 3: like take down a lot. Thank you Aunt Jenna and
[30:22] Speaker 3: Kevin for letting me be on your podcast. Bye.
[30:33] Speaker 1: Should we grade some performances? Yes, okay, let's do it.
[30:38] Speaker 1: We're definitely doing all of these and they're all getting
[30:40] Speaker 1: a's how it's done it.
[30:43] Speaker 2: Plus, I hadn't heard the song. I hadn't heard any
[30:46] Speaker 2: of these songs have Golden before?
[30:48] Speaker 3: Oh?
[30:48] Speaker 1: Really?
[30:49] Speaker 2: Yeah?
[30:50] Speaker 1: Well you really stayed away? Okay? Golden a plus plus plus.
[30:55] Speaker 2: Golden is yeah, a plus plus plus. Also, like the
[30:57] Speaker 2: court when they finally do it at the end. The
[31:00] Speaker 2: choreos so satisfying.
[31:03] Speaker 1: I know, I know, it's really good. A plus A
[31:08] Speaker 1: plus Takedown A plus A plus, free A your idol?
[31:16] Speaker 2: A wait, I want to talk about your idol?
[31:21] Speaker 1: Okay, talk about it, because the.
[31:24] Speaker 2: Whole time I was like, if I saw this in person,
[31:28] Speaker 2: are you kidding me? They start the number by levitating.
[31:32] Speaker 2: It is so cool, and then they show up downstage
[31:38] Speaker 2: and then they pop back up upstage and are levitating again.
[31:41] Speaker 2: I was like, this is theatrics.
[31:45] Speaker 1: It's giving as long as your mind.
[31:49] Speaker 2: But like historically, like the boy groups have always been
[31:53] Speaker 2: more theatrical than the girl groups, and I think you
[31:56] Speaker 2: also see that in some of like like the hairstyles
[32:00] Speaker 2: and things in the group Saga Boys.
[32:02] Speaker 1: Yeah yeah.
[32:03] Speaker 2: And then like they're like stage their stage presence is
[32:08] Speaker 2: like campier, yes, you know, like it is, and they
[32:12] Speaker 2: show up in these like Beyonce formation hats and they're
[32:16] Speaker 2: like demon wear and they're levitating. I just thought that
[32:19] Speaker 2: was so cool.
[32:20] Speaker 1: It's pretty great levitation what it sounds like. It was like,
[32:27] Speaker 1: I give it an.
[32:28] Speaker 2: A chills A plus oh wow, oh, because I mean
[32:32] Speaker 2: it's like the So I think we need to talk
[32:34] Speaker 2: about EJ's range because she can live up there, but
[32:37] Speaker 2: she also starts a song. I didn't think it was her.
[32:39] Speaker 1: I was like her, I didn't know it was her either.
[32:41] Speaker 1: I was like, that's her. It's excellent. Yeah, I mean
[32:45] Speaker 1: her range is crazy. Also, that ponytail must be so heavy.
[32:49] Speaker 1: Every fight girl wants that purple ponytail. I was like,
[32:52] Speaker 1: what is going on?
[32:53] Speaker 2: But we love it? I want it to.
[32:59] Speaker 1: Also the fashion, it was all like inspired by amazing
[33:08] Speaker 1: designers like Javonte, Jean, Paul Gautier, Alexander McQueen, and then
[33:15] Speaker 1: also blending in Korean traditional ements. I thought that the
[33:18] Speaker 1: costumeing was yeah, onto, I okay, all right, let's do
[33:25] Speaker 1: some Cardie shakes, great aucheese. I don't think that. I
[33:31] Speaker 1: don't know. I don't I don't think so.
[33:34] Speaker 2: I don't think so.
[33:35] Speaker 1: Okay, maybe we missed something, but nothing that we saw
[33:38] Speaker 1: in plain sight. Best dance move, I mean, Kevin the
[33:42] Speaker 1: Corey Army is Soda pop also went like viral like
[33:46] Speaker 1: people were doing it. It was it was crazy.
[33:49] Speaker 2: I'm actually sad I missed that because I would for
[33:51] Speaker 2: sure you definitely like golden. But I also just think
[33:56] Speaker 2: I don't know if he counts as a dancer. But
[33:57] Speaker 2: the levitation, okay, let's go with the levitation. It reminded me,
[34:03] Speaker 2: did you did you see the Backstreet Boys Millennium Tour.
[34:06] Speaker 1: I literally was thinking the same thing Kevin. I was like,
[34:09] Speaker 1: is this is giving.
[34:10] Speaker 2: Millennium snowboard looking things or like no shrinks attached? When
[34:18] Speaker 2: they dropped down from the scene.
[34:20] Speaker 1: I was like, yes, yes, it's so true. The best
[34:25] Speaker 1: song Golden, Golden, Yeah, that's the prop.
[34:32] Speaker 2: Man. There's so many good props in this movie.
[34:37] Speaker 1: The card, the card that comes out of the the Tigers.
[34:45] Speaker 2: I love the love the Tiger. I mean talked about
[34:49] Speaker 2: great character design.
[34:50] Speaker 1: I know she's like, what are you?
[34:55] Speaker 2: And I know this is not a prop, but I
[34:57] Speaker 2: just remember what my favorite outfit was when the girls
[35:00] Speaker 2: were all dressed in that black leather when they were
[35:02] Speaker 2: going to go take down Assaga Boys the first time. Yeah,
[35:05] Speaker 2: and they have to go down the slides in the leather.
[35:08] Speaker 1: Very it's very McQueen.
[35:10] Speaker 2: I think that cute.
[35:14] Speaker 1: Best line.
[35:16] Speaker 2: Oh, I definitely known what mine is?
[35:19] Speaker 1: What is yours?
[35:21] Speaker 2: She grew up in America? Someone told burbank us.
[35:24] Speaker 1: Yes, it was like, yeah, so good performance. MVP roomy, roomy.
[35:37] Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah, but like everybody was so great.
[35:41] Speaker 1: No really, ensemble cast excellent.
[35:44] Speaker 2: Yes, excellent, excellent work. Really enjoyed this, and now I'm
[35:49] Speaker 2: just pissed there's not a sequel yet. It's coming.
[35:53] Speaker 1: You know, it'll be you'll blanket it'll be here.
[35:56] Speaker 2: Okay, should we found a TikTok jenna completely unrelated the
[36:02] Speaker 2: lamp in curtain Finn's room.
[36:05] Speaker 1: I am Connor Burk. What's this is Connor Burk?
[36:10] Speaker 2: Is we love him?
[36:12] Speaker 1: It's really good.
[36:15] Speaker 2: Listening to Finn say what he should not be saying.
[36:20] Speaker 1: Yes exactly. And there's the literally is like a lamb
[36:23] Speaker 1: chain on his.
[36:24] Speaker 2: Head and wrapped in a Pride flag.
[36:27] Speaker 1: And being deeply offended.
[36:30] Speaker 2: In the corner of the room, the not so good
[36:35] Speaker 2: very our Irish opera. Thank you for this, Thank you
[36:38] Speaker 2: for your art. I love your art. You're an artist.
