What actually makes something a “comfort” watch? This week, Jenna & Kevin break down the shows and movies they find themselves coming back to over and over ... and their picks are way less predictable than you might expect. From dark dramas and action blockbusters to nostalgic rewatches that help them unwind, they talk about why familiarity just feels good, how comfort viewing shifts with different phases of life, and why sometimes the least “cozy” choices end up being the most comforting. [0:01] Speaker 1: And that's what you really missed with Jenna.
[0:04] Speaker 2: And Kevin An iHeartRadio podcast.
[0:08] Speaker 1: Welcome to and that's what you're in this podcast back
[0:11] Speaker 1: in Hi.
[0:13] Speaker 3: Jenna, Oh, we wanted to do an episode on this
[0:21] Speaker 3: topic because I know everybody has them, and I know
[0:27] Speaker 3: that we have a lot of them.
[0:30] Speaker 1: And when I say them, I'm talking about your comfort shows.
[0:35] Speaker 2: And movies, I feel like you're a big comfort show
[0:41] Speaker 2: movie girl.
[0:41] Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I've always been a comfort show movie girl.
[0:47] Speaker 1: I love new things. I totally support new media. I
[0:53] Speaker 1: do ingest it. But there's something about, especially now, the
[0:59] Speaker 1: hours between the time I close my eyes and the
[1:03] Speaker 1: time my children go to bed is like golden hours
[1:07] Speaker 1: of time for myself. And it depends on the day,
[1:11] Speaker 1: the week, the you know, the attitude, whatever it is. Yeah,
[1:15] Speaker 1: Like I'm exhausted, my brain needs to like zone, and
[1:18] Speaker 1: I watching a comfort show is like so much more
[1:22] Speaker 1: restorative for me than trying to like break watch Claribus.
[1:27] Speaker 2: You know, I think that's what That's what it's like,
[1:30] Speaker 2: all the nostalgia shows and like feelings and comfort shows.
[1:33] Speaker 2: I feel like that's what it is, right, Like you
[1:37] Speaker 2: can just you know what's going to happen you know,
[1:39] Speaker 2: you already know the feeling that that thing gives you,
[1:42] Speaker 2: so you want to go back to that feeling and
[1:45] Speaker 2: you can just sort of sit there and enjoy yeah,
[1:48] Speaker 2: and the beautifulness ecstasy of it all without having to
[1:52] Speaker 2: like really pay attention and figure out something.
[1:55] Speaker 1: New yes, yes, or be or feel nervous or the
[1:59] Speaker 1: uncomfortable emotions like I went through, you know, in preparation
[2:05] Speaker 1: for this episode of like what are my comfort shows?
[2:08] Speaker 1: Where are my comfort films? I have a lot of
[2:10] Speaker 1: cover films. A lot of them are like action adventure
[2:16] Speaker 1: drama that you watch and you're like, oh my god,
[2:18] Speaker 1: what's going to happen? Yeah, And there's something about like
[2:21] Speaker 1: that feeling, not having that feeling while watching a show
[2:24] Speaker 1: or a movie that keeps you on the edge of
[2:28] Speaker 1: your seat, but you know it's going to work out
[2:30] Speaker 1: in the end. Totally, it's very comforting.
[2:33] Speaker 2: I feel like most of minor movies and they're like
[2:38] Speaker 2: when I was assuming them, like they're a lot more
[2:40] Speaker 2: serious than I would have. Like when people say comfort shows,
[2:44] Speaker 2: I'm like, I don't know if they're going to buy
[2:45] Speaker 2: these as comfort shows. But there are the things that
[2:47] Speaker 2: I like go back to the most like I just
[2:52] Speaker 2: and I am not like a looper. I am not
[2:54] Speaker 2: somebody who grew up watching things a lot like repeatedly.
[3:00] Speaker 1: Do you do now? You do more? I do now?
[3:03] Speaker 2: I do now? Growing up like the only I had
[3:06] Speaker 2: a phase where I watched Awesome Powers The Spy Who Shagged.
[3:10] Speaker 1: Me Stop a lot when you were younger.
[3:16] Speaker 2: Yeah, I went through like a month where I watched
[3:18] Speaker 2: it like every other day, and then I would watch
[3:21] Speaker 2: the original Airbud movie alone. But that was sort of it.
[3:26] Speaker 2: I would never watch a movie a second time, especially
[3:30] Speaker 2: a TV show.
[3:31] Speaker 1: Weird, Kevin, That's so weird? Do you I'm wonder if
[3:33] Speaker 1: their studies on that. Do you remember we talked about
[3:38] Speaker 1: in the podcast that we did prior to this, where
[3:42] Speaker 1: we talked about a few loop songs.
[3:44] Speaker 2: Mm hmm.
[3:46] Speaker 1: I was a little song luber.
[3:47] Speaker 2: Yeah, and I was not. Occasionally.
[3:50] Speaker 1: I'm an occasional movie looper. Yes i am. I've always
[3:53] Speaker 1: been a movie looper, and I've watched there are a
[3:56] Speaker 1: handful of movies when I was in my like young
[3:59] Speaker 1: teens early teen years that I would watch on repeat
[4:03] Speaker 1: with my friends, like we watched Bring It On, to
[4:07] Speaker 1: the point where I can still quote that movie, word
[4:10] Speaker 1: for word, clueless, word for word.
[4:18] Speaker 2: Okay, mean girls, I looped?
[4:20] Speaker 1: Okay, see yep, yep, yep, mean girls.
[4:22] Speaker 2: I did loop. It's going back to me now right.
[4:25] Speaker 1: There's some films that, like I watched Cruel Intentions one
[4:30] Speaker 1: hundred thousand times.
[4:32] Speaker 2: I thought I thought like scared watching that, like I
[4:35] Speaker 2: was going to get caught and people would now I
[4:37] Speaker 2: was gay.
[4:39] Speaker 1: Oh my god, that was just like a scandalous movie
[4:41] Speaker 1: in general for anybody who actually so good. Yes, so
[4:47] Speaker 1: I I was always a looper growing up, and I
[4:52] Speaker 1: have one TV show that you could probably guess that
[4:55] Speaker 1: I loop often still, but I've looped since the early
[4:59] Speaker 1: two thousands. Oh, Gray's Anatomy, Well that's one of them.
[5:03] Speaker 1: But friends, Oh.
[5:05] Speaker 2: I is it like something with people of our generation,
[5:10] Speaker 2: Like I feel like I am surrounded by people who loop,
[5:14] Speaker 2: friends who fall asleep watching friends.
[5:17] Speaker 1: On all day. Watch to me, Yes, I know that
[5:21] Speaker 1: is a funny thing about you and all of us
[5:24] Speaker 1: around you. We're all friends, Like we could coach you
[5:27] Speaker 1: a friend.
[5:28] Speaker 2: All do it?
[5:29] Speaker 1: We love it?
[5:29] Speaker 2: Yes, And I don't know, and you all give me
[5:32] Speaker 2: because you're like, oh you hate friends, Like I watched
[5:35] Speaker 2: it when it was on. I think we can watch it.
[5:40] Speaker 1: That would also do Signfeld like that. I don't do
[5:42] Speaker 1: sign like that. You know which one I did? Used
[5:45] Speaker 1: to do Taxi?
[5:47] Speaker 2: Oh my god, Taxi.
[5:49] Speaker 1: Like Nick When Nick and Knight was on all the time.
[5:52] Speaker 1: When we watched TV on you know, broadcast television. I
[5:55] Speaker 1: would watch Taxi and I love Lucy All yeah, that's
[6:03] Speaker 1: the best. And Fra sure definitely about it. So I
[6:11] Speaker 1: think there's also like, okay, so what do you watch any?
[6:14] Speaker 1: Do you loop any TV shows?
[6:16] Speaker 2: I realized that the things that I do go back
[6:19] Speaker 2: to the most. I have a question first actually for you, okay, okay,
[6:24] Speaker 2: if you are like looping these TV shows, if you're
[6:27] Speaker 2: repeatedly going back to watch them, are you watching do
[6:31] Speaker 2: you like always go back and like start at the
[6:32] Speaker 2: pilot of Friends and just keep playing the series all
[6:35] Speaker 2: the way through or do you pick an episode you
[6:37] Speaker 2: want to see that night.
[6:39] Speaker 1: It's different. So for Friends, I can watch any I
[6:42] Speaker 1: can literally pick what mood I'm in for for what season.
[6:45] Speaker 1: So I'll like pick what season mood if I want
[6:47] Speaker 1: earlier Friends, later Friends, you know, Baby Friends, Ross and
[6:52] Speaker 1: Rachel Friends, so like it just depends on my mood.
[6:56] Speaker 1: But other shows that I'll watch or maybe not comfort
[7:00] Speaker 1: but that i'll rewatch, like like West Wing, I'll do
[7:05] Speaker 1: I'll always do from the beginning, and I think West
[7:07] Speaker 1: One could be that for me.
[7:08] Speaker 2: I haven't gotten there yet, but I think I think
[7:11] Speaker 2: about it a lot and I want to do it.
[7:13] Speaker 1: The Good Way is also a good one, but those
[7:17] Speaker 1: are important for me to start from the beginning. So
[7:21] Speaker 1: like Good Wife, Parenthood, like a storyline that are going
[7:27] Speaker 1: through the more context is helpful to like dig into it.
[7:30] Speaker 1: But like those are comfort shows, Like I could put
[7:33] Speaker 1: on any episode of Parenthood and still watch it. But
[7:37] Speaker 1: I do have a lot more movies, Like lately, if
[7:41] Speaker 1: I'm by myself, I'll watch TV shows, but I've find
[7:43] Speaker 1: with David will Do we do comfort movies every night
[7:47] Speaker 1: because I feel like even if we do, like a
[7:50] Speaker 1: new episode of pluribis like we're watching a Purabis right now.
[7:53] Speaker 1: We're also watching Traders of course, so like watch something
[7:56] Speaker 1: new for the first hour and then after that it
[7:59] Speaker 1: goes to a COmON for films really no matter what. Yes, yes,
[8:05] Speaker 1: it's like we have a rotation and it's like which one.
[8:10] Speaker 2: That's so funny? I think the only like the comfort
[8:14] Speaker 2: shows I have I think are like animated.
[8:17] Speaker 1: Shows so interesting.
[8:19] Speaker 2: Which would be like Death Note, which is not like
[8:23] Speaker 2: necessarily a light show so funny, but like I have
[8:26] Speaker 2: to watch it in order and after our last airbender
[8:29] Speaker 2: in Korra. But like I have those I could watch
[8:34] Speaker 2: out of order, okay, and The West Wing. But I
[8:37] Speaker 2: have a lot of movies that I repeated the Yeah.
[8:40] Speaker 1: I feels like you're much more of a movie looper.
[8:43] Speaker 1: I think kind of movies are you looping? I'm so curious,
[8:48] Speaker 1: like what genre of movie looping you do?
[8:50] Speaker 2: Okay, most recently, I don't know if anyone else would
[8:56] Speaker 2: call this a comfort movie. But Girl with a Dragon Tattoo,
[9:02] Speaker 2: I've seen it so many times.
[9:05] Speaker 1: No, but you know what I could watch like Jennifer's Body, Yeah,
[9:09] Speaker 1: that's not but Girl the Giants use a different so weird.
[9:15] Speaker 2: But what I like about it is like I love
[9:21] Speaker 2: the mood of like how it looks okay, feeling of
[9:26] Speaker 2: like I'm not I'm not nervous about the mystery of it.
[9:29] Speaker 2: I've read the book series. I've seen this movie a
[9:32] Speaker 2: billion times, Like I know what happens, so I'm not
[9:35] Speaker 2: worried about like murder and stuff, you know, and like
[9:39] Speaker 2: everybody's so excellent. I love how David Fincher thing looks
[9:43] Speaker 2: like the mood of it is so like another one
[9:46] Speaker 2: for me is also a rival, Like I.
[9:49] Speaker 1: Get that, I get it. I get it.
[9:51] Speaker 2: Yeah, which I come to find out, I guess that's
[9:53] Speaker 2: also like sort of like a cliche gay guy movie
[9:56] Speaker 2: to watch. I did not know. I thought I was
[9:59] Speaker 2: unique and was.
[9:59] Speaker 1: Like, that's really funny. When are you watching comfort films?
[10:03] Speaker 1: Like I feel like you watch a lot more new
[10:05] Speaker 1: content than I do. So like, when are you watching
[10:07] Speaker 1: and how often are you watching comfort films?
[10:09] Speaker 2: Ooh? Not like you every night? Because I'm also someone
[10:15] Speaker 2: who's I don't love to like passively watch. I'm not
[10:20] Speaker 2: saying you passively watch anything, but we passively watch. But
[10:23] Speaker 2: like I don't like just having something on in the background.
[10:25] Speaker 2: That's how name was music too. I don't like just
[10:27] Speaker 2: having like I'm either audatively or we're not doing it.
[10:30] Speaker 1: Got it? Got it?
[10:32] Speaker 2: Yeah? I get that. Like Arrival, I might watch like
[10:35] Speaker 2: twice a year.
[10:37] Speaker 1: That's it.
[10:37] Speaker 2: Like that's big for me, Oh my god, yeah.
[10:42] Speaker 1: Very interesting. Okay, there's something about I think David's much
[10:49] Speaker 1: more of an active watcher. He likes to be more
[10:52] Speaker 1: engaged at night, like he wants to like have time,
[10:55] Speaker 1: like quality time. So like we do like ten to
[10:58] Speaker 1: fifteen minutes of like we'll just catch up and then
[11:01] Speaker 1: we'll go into like something new or whatever, traders you know,
[11:04] Speaker 1: et cetera, and then it'll be or we'll just like
[11:07] Speaker 1: it was a long day, comfort get on your phone
[11:11] Speaker 1: catch up, like because I don't really get to look
[11:13] Speaker 1: at my phone all day realistically, Like I try not
[11:16] Speaker 1: to have it out with the kids. I try not
[11:18] Speaker 1: to be on it unless I'm working, and so it's
[11:21] Speaker 1: like I have to respond to texts, I have to
[11:23] Speaker 1: do a calendar, I have to like catch up, and
[11:26] Speaker 1: so having something on in the background is like me
[11:28] Speaker 1: time and then also just like catch up time, and
[11:32] Speaker 1: so it's just like a really important time of my day.
[11:36] Speaker 2: You have multiple things to do it once.
[11:38] Speaker 1: Yeah, she's the multitasker, queen of the multitasking we watch.
[11:44] Speaker 1: We are I'm actually nervous to even reveal this because
[11:48] Speaker 1: this is so intimate. I don't know how we got
[11:52] Speaker 1: into this. I don't know how it happened. I don't know.
[11:57] Speaker 1: We were trying to remember last night when it happened.
[12:00] Speaker 1: But our comfort movie currently and for the last forever
[12:04] Speaker 1: years has and I'm embarrassed to even try to count
[12:08] Speaker 1: how many times we've seen these films are The National
[12:10] Speaker 1: Treasure and Book of Secrets. Oh hell yeah, like every night.
[12:15] Speaker 1: It's like every yeah, like either we'll do thatter a
[12:19] Speaker 1: Harry Potter or a Marvel or like an Armageddon or
[12:24] Speaker 1: something like that.
[12:25] Speaker 2: We watch Speed a lot for Armageddon.
[12:28] Speaker 1: Ardon and Speed. We watch a lot love Speed, but
[12:33] Speaker 1: National Treasure is usually the go to, and he'll be like,
[12:35] Speaker 1: which one. We don't even have to say, what do
[12:37] Speaker 1: you want to watch? It's which one? Oh, and it's
[12:40] Speaker 1: Spoke of Secrets or we go back and forth. Sometimes
[12:42] Speaker 1: we'll watch both at night.
[12:44] Speaker 2: That makes so much sense, though, because there's also something
[12:46] Speaker 2: about those movies that like the mood of them, like
[12:50] Speaker 2: they feel like a warm.
[12:52] Speaker 1: Hug yep exactly.
[12:53] Speaker 2: It's like safe, good fun yep.
[12:56] Speaker 1: Totally interesting, and there's like history and it's kind of fun,
[13:03] Speaker 1: and it's like it's there's something Yeah, I we just
[13:07] Speaker 1: we love that.
[13:09] Speaker 2: I feel like you and I both watched for Devil
[13:11] Speaker 2: Worst Product People.
[13:13] Speaker 1: I could watch that movie every day. Yeah, I will
[13:16] Speaker 1: never not I also we really like the bat the
[13:21] Speaker 1: Nolan Batman's all three of them, the second and third correct, same.
[13:28] Speaker 1: I just like the second more, I like the third more.
[13:32] Speaker 2: I like both. There is something about I think the
[13:35] Speaker 2: second one is like a perfect movie totally, but there
[13:39] Speaker 2: is something about the third that I just really.
[13:42] Speaker 1: Like so good. And I love Harry Potter of course,
[13:48] Speaker 1: so we'll watch Harry Potter all the time often, like
[13:51] Speaker 1: around Christmas time, will do the whole series, but we'll
[13:54] Speaker 1: always reach for the end. We will always go to
[13:56] Speaker 1: the either well that's not true. We'll go from three, four, five, six,
[14:04] Speaker 1: part two like we'll do those. I know it'll be
[14:07] Speaker 1: like a gamble which one.
[14:09] Speaker 2: Yeah, I feel like I'm still worn out from that.
[14:12] Speaker 2: And I think we've talked about it before because I
[14:14] Speaker 2: think I've seen them all so many times.
[14:17] Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, no, I.
[14:18] Speaker 2: Also feel a little funny about watching them now.
[14:20] Speaker 1: I know I'm very to I do feel like.
[14:23] Speaker 2: Already made, you know, like anything new definitely. Yeah, those
[14:29] Speaker 2: movies like Ratitudey is a big one. I think a
[14:32] Speaker 2: lot of like animated movies up in Ratitudey.
[14:36] Speaker 1: Oh I love. I don't watch you animated movies anymore
[14:41] Speaker 1: because we watched them all day.
[14:42] Speaker 2: Oh yeah, why would you?
[14:51] Speaker 1: I am a rapid fire for us. Okay, okay, Comfort show.
[14:54] Speaker 1: You fall asleep too, I it could be a movie too.
[14:59] Speaker 1: I like to fall asleep when I'm by myself, Like
[15:02] Speaker 1: if there's a business trip for David, I'll watch Center Stage.
[15:08] Speaker 2: God, I'm lame. The only thing I generally like, honestly,
[15:12] Speaker 2: the thing I fall asleep to is like when a
[15:14] Speaker 2: Grand Slam is on and I'll put the tennis so on,
[15:18] Speaker 2: fall asleep.
[15:18] Speaker 1: We've been watching Australian Open lately.
[15:20] Speaker 2: Yeah, same, That's what I think. But like I think
[15:24] Speaker 2: probably something like Westerling for sure.
[15:29] Speaker 1: Okay, Comfort movie will always stop on if it's on TV.
[15:34] Speaker 1: Ocean's eleven miscongeniality, what a good? Honestly anything Sandra Book
[15:42] Speaker 1: like like okay, blind Side love that? Okay, Comfort Shure
[15:47] Speaker 1: you've seen an embarrassing number of times. I mean, obviously
[15:50] Speaker 1: Natty Tea is one of them, and then Friends is also.
[15:59] Speaker 2: Embarass the amount of times. Probably crazy Ritasians.
[16:03] Speaker 1: That's funny. A show you love we can't rewatch because
[16:06] Speaker 1: it makes you cry. Well, I don't know that I've
[16:09] Speaker 1: ever had one that makes me cry that would be
[16:10] Speaker 1: a comfort film for me, maybe walk to remember. But
[16:14] Speaker 1: I do watch Titanic often, but I only watch the
[16:20] Speaker 1: beginning half, you know, like when the VHS is used
[16:23] Speaker 1: to split. Yes, I would, I'll like watch the first half.
[16:26] Speaker 2: That is so funny. Something that makes me cry. I
[16:30] Speaker 2: used to have a really hard time crying, so I
[16:32] Speaker 2: would watch The Impossible. It wouldn't make me ball. Do
[16:42] Speaker 2: you remember? I think I told you, like once I
[16:44] Speaker 2: sat next to somebody on an airplane and they were
[16:48] Speaker 2: watching it on their iPad and I was crying. I
[16:50] Speaker 2: couldn't even hear it. Coco and oh Coco, Oh my god.
[16:55] Speaker 1: Usually put a blanket over your head when you cry
[16:57] Speaker 1: on an airplane is not the best. Go A comfort
[17:01] Speaker 1: show that surprised you, you know, I don't know that
[17:06] Speaker 1: I would ever have thought in my in my wildest dreams,
[17:10] Speaker 1: that a medical show would be something that I would rewatch.
[17:13] Speaker 1: But obviously Grey's Anatomy is high up there too.
[17:15] Speaker 2: Yeah, I think probably, I think the Dragon.
[17:20] Speaker 1: That's yeah, that definitely surprised me. A comfort show for
[17:25] Speaker 1: others that you don't understand, Okay, I've got one. So
[17:28] Speaker 1: I love these shows and I'm a fan of these shows,
[17:31] Speaker 1: but I cannot rewatch them like comfort wise the Office,
[17:35] Speaker 1: I can't watch like all the time. The humor get
[17:39] Speaker 1: is uncomfortable. It's two works and then like Shit's creaked
[17:42] Speaker 1: two Like I can only watch a few episodes and
[17:45] Speaker 1: then I start to get like.
[17:47] Speaker 2: Oh I fully feel that, like I can't They're not
[17:53] Speaker 2: comfortable and enjoy it. I'm like no, no, I'm squirming.
[17:57] Speaker 1: No, I know what a good time I can. They're
[18:00] Speaker 1: all wonderful shows. I love them all, I really do.
[18:03] Speaker 1: They're just not comfort shows for me.
[18:06] Speaker 2: I can't do it with comedies in general, I think
[18:10] Speaker 2: because like you already know the jokes are coming.
[18:12] Speaker 1: Yes, yes, yeah, I get that. It's the drama of
[18:16] Speaker 1: it all. I don't know. I love a comfort drama.
[18:19] Speaker 2: I might have to go watch a rival again tonight.
[18:23] Speaker 2: We'll go watch nanty Oh you know which one used
[18:25] Speaker 2: to be a really before like Viva ven Data used
[18:27] Speaker 2: to be a really big one.
[18:28] Speaker 1: Oh that's a good one. Okay. I can't on board

[18:54] Speaker 2: thing for me.
