[0:01] Speaker 1: And that's what you really missed with Jenna.
[0:04] Speaker 2: And Kevin an iHeartRadio podcast.
[0:09] Speaker 1: Welcome to you, and that's what you're really miss podcast.
[0:13] Speaker 1: Welcome to the new era of the podcast.
[0:17] Speaker 2: Kevin, this is it, Jenna, this is post Glee, and
[0:20] Speaker 2: that's what you really missed. But we're not stopping with
[0:23] Speaker 2: the musicals. You know, we have a theme, we have
[0:25] Speaker 2: what we like. We're taking everything we loved about the
[0:28] Speaker 2: rewatch and just expanding it to other musical things, musical movies, stories,
[0:34] Speaker 2: all the guests, all the people that worked on these things,
[0:36] Speaker 2: people that enjoyed making and watching these things.
[0:39] Speaker 1: Kevin, we talked about deeply, in depth about what we
[0:42] Speaker 1: wanted to do post Glee era, right, and I think
[0:46] Speaker 1: the thing that was like the most exciting for us
[0:49] Speaker 1: and we thought for like you guys, because we were
[0:52] Speaker 1: all raised by these musicals and they're all so encompassing
[0:56] Speaker 1: of the show and of our lives. And so we're
[0:59] Speaker 1: diving into some of the most iconic musical movies ever,
[1:03] Speaker 1: from Rocky Horror to Hairspray, I mean, Greece, Chicago, West
[1:09] Speaker 1: Side Story, High School Musical, I mean, you name it, Like,
[1:12] Speaker 1: they're all newsies, like there's just so many that inspired
[1:16] Speaker 1: and influenced and even appeared in Glee.
[1:20] Speaker 2: Wicked Part one and two. Oh god, I can't we're
[1:23] Speaker 2: doing it all. Also, we're not just doing movies. We're
[1:26] Speaker 2: gonna do some TV as well, like Smash in Nashville
[1:30] Speaker 2: and Crazy Ex Girlfriend Girls five EVA, and you know
[1:33] Speaker 2: those random musical episodes if you feel like, if your
[1:36] Speaker 2: show's on long enough, you're gonna do a musical episode
[1:38] Speaker 2: like Grey's Anatomy and The Flash. And we're just so
[1:42] Speaker 2: excited to get to watch all of these, some of
[1:44] Speaker 2: these for the first time. Yeah, some of them. We're
[1:47] Speaker 2: gonna have more fans on and see what you guys.
[1:50] Speaker 1: Like, you're going to ask you, you're gonna tell us,
[1:52] Speaker 1: and we're gonna watch it right exactly. We'll also be
[1:56] Speaker 1: joined by a lot of the very special guests, you know,
[1:58] Speaker 1: the stars of the movies, the creators, the people who
[2:00] Speaker 1: brought these projects all to life. And even though our
[2:04] Speaker 1: Glee rewatch has wrapped obviously, Kevin, you said it like,
[2:07] Speaker 1: we're not leaving the show behind at all. They'll be
[2:10] Speaker 1: so much Glee within this podcast.
[2:13] Speaker 2: Oh yeah, you know, we're going to have so many
[2:15] Speaker 2: of our Glee friends on there's also inherently baked into
[2:19] Speaker 2: a lot of these musical TV shows and movies, so
[2:21] Speaker 2: many Glee people in front of the camera and behind
[2:25] Speaker 2: the camera. And we're going to keep you updated and
[2:27] Speaker 2: all the things that our friends are doing. And we
[2:32] Speaker 2: Jenna and I talked extensively about you know how much
[2:36] Speaker 2: it's meant for all of us on the iHeart side
[2:39] Speaker 2: of this and to me and Jenna specifically from your support,
[2:42] Speaker 2: and we want to keep that going. So we're going
[2:44] Speaker 2: to be interviewing a lot more fans as well talking
[2:47] Speaker 2: about Glee and you know, finding new fans of these
[2:51] Speaker 2: new shows and movies that we're going to be watching.
[2:54] Speaker 1: So buckle up, people.
[2:56] Speaker 2: That being said, we had to start the show and
[3:02] Speaker 2: the only possible way imaginable, which is high school Musical.
[3:06] Speaker 1: Oh my god.
[3:07] Speaker 2: It basically brought back the musical for a whole new generation,
[3:12] Speaker 2: and honestly, without it, I don't know if Glee would
[3:15] Speaker 2: have happened.
[3:16] Speaker 1: We're very different from High School Musical obviously, but the
[3:21] Speaker 1: amount of interviews there were like, okay, so high school Musical, well,
[3:26] Speaker 1: high School Musical paved the way. I mean, it came
[3:29] Speaker 1: out in two thousand and six. It was also massive.
[3:33] Speaker 2: I mean it was absolutely gigantic, and it was new
[3:36] Speaker 2: musical for a new generation with the original music, and
[3:41] Speaker 2: I think people hadn't seen that, those kids that age
[3:44] Speaker 2: hadn't seen that yet. And when Glee came out, it
[3:48] Speaker 2: was the next musical, and so we were naturally compared.
[3:53] Speaker 2: Even like when we were negotiating our contracts for the pilot,
[3:57] Speaker 2: it was based off of high school musical contract because
[4:01] Speaker 2: they had touring in there, they had their march in there. Yeah,
[4:05] Speaker 2: they had to that.
[4:06] Speaker 1: It was American Idol.
[4:07] Speaker 2: Well, it was both because they had to have because
[4:10] Speaker 2: normally a TV show wouldn't have a touring and album
[4:15] Speaker 2: you know deal in there. So they had to make
[4:19] Speaker 2: sure all those things were covered because high school musical
[4:21] Speaker 2: became so gigantic that they went on tours and that
[4:26] Speaker 2: was the only sort of model to base right right,
[4:30] Speaker 2: right right, and people. You know, we were hoping that
[4:32] Speaker 2: we'd have some fraction of the high school musical success
[4:36] Speaker 2: because it absolutely sort of took over the world.
[4:39] Speaker 1: Okay, so before we get into our normal structure, we
[4:43] Speaker 1: are going to like kind of go through what was
[4:44] Speaker 1: going on in the world. We're going to do the
[4:48] Speaker 1: reactions and light recap. Uh, we're going to talk about
[4:52] Speaker 1: the plot a little bit, but we're keeping the same format.
[4:54] Speaker 1: So you guys will hear us creating performances. You will
[4:56] Speaker 1: hear us doing TARTI takes to hear us doing stuff
[4:59] Speaker 1: with on anti TikTok, and then we'll also tell you
[5:02] Speaker 1: what we're watching next to so if you want to
[5:04] Speaker 1: watch it, like I would have suggested or suggest that
[5:07] Speaker 1: you guys watch high School Musical before you listen to it,
[5:09] Speaker 1: because what a time jump, what a capsule of time,
[5:12] Speaker 1: what a what a moment.
[5:15] Speaker 2: I also just think, like you probably all have seen it,
[5:19] Speaker 2: and but like you should go. And also just how
[5:24] Speaker 2: young everybody was and how everybody became just like stars
[5:29] Speaker 2: off of this one TV movie.
[5:33] Speaker 1: All right, let's talk about it. So in the news,
[5:36] Speaker 1: what was going on in the world. The number one
[5:37] Speaker 1: song was Grills by Nelly.
[5:41] Speaker 2: Do you remember this song? I really don't want to
[5:44] Speaker 2: see your grails?
[5:45] Speaker 1: Yeah?
[5:46] Speaker 2: Yeah, your grails by the Julie store and tell me
[5:51] Speaker 2: smile for me, daddy, what you're looking at? I want
[5:54] Speaker 2: to see your grail? You want to see my what?
[5:57] Speaker 1: Yeah?
[5:57] Speaker 2: You're gril?
[5:58] Speaker 1: You're great? Oh?
[6:00] Speaker 2: It was great.
[6:01] Speaker 1: That's the only time you've ever done the number one song, Kevin.
[6:05] Speaker 2: I immediately I read that and it just pops into
[6:08] Speaker 2: my head. Paul Wall, do you remember Paul Wall. Paul
[6:11] Speaker 2: Wall would have the grills. He had a grill shop
[6:13] Speaker 2: like store, you would make grills. Okay, Okay, Jenna doesn't
[6:19] Speaker 2: get it, you guys.
[6:20] Speaker 1: No, No, just like this number one movie, Underworld Evolution.
[6:23] Speaker 1: Didn't see it.
[6:24] Speaker 2: I didn't see any of the Underworld movies.
[6:26] Speaker 1: There's definitely these like vampire Zeitgeist thing happening in time
[6:32] Speaker 1: around this time. Obvious right because this aired, sorry on
[6:35] Speaker 1: January twentieth, two thousand and six, we're starting to see
[6:39] Speaker 1: the Twilight faster.
[6:42] Speaker 2: It's Fester's the word, that's right. Yeah, there's no Glee
[6:47] Speaker 2: news since Glee did not exist yet and won't exist
[6:50] Speaker 2: for a couple of years. But there's some pop culture moments.
[6:53] Speaker 2: So American Idol was the number one show in the US.
[6:55] Speaker 2: Season five had just started with Taylor Hicks Katherin mcpee.
[7:00] Speaker 2: We're going to watch Smash and Chris Daughtry lost. Desperate Housewives,
[7:05] Speaker 2: Gray's Anatomy, and prison Break were also dominating primetime.
[7:09] Speaker 1: I Love I'm into the TV. Yeah. Yeah. Social media
[7:14] Speaker 1: was just starting to creep in. So Facebook was limited
[7:16] Speaker 1: to college students. I remember signing up for it. YouTube
[7:20] Speaker 1: was less than a year old, Oh my god, and
[7:23] Speaker 1: my Space was still the biggest platform.
[7:25] Speaker 2: Do you remember with Facebook you had to like get
[7:27] Speaker 2: an invite from somebody before you could Yep, felt very exclusive.
[7:32] Speaker 2: You had to use your college email. Well I was,
[7:36] Speaker 2: you were in it before me, so I probably got
[7:38] Speaker 2: it on that next wave right right right. iPods were
[7:41] Speaker 2: at peak popularity, and the High School Musical soundtrack would
[7:45] Speaker 2: later be one of the most downloaded albums on iTunes
[7:47] Speaker 2: of two thousand and six.
[7:49] Speaker 1: Wow fashion, Oh my god, take me back von Dutch hats.
[7:54] Speaker 1: How many did you have? Had? Eight boots? Like three zero?
[8:00] Speaker 1: Layered polos everywhere, so many layered polos, so many jeene skirts.
[8:04] Speaker 2: I fought against all of these trends, Jenna.
[8:07] Speaker 1: I was just I dove head first, head first, It's
[8:13] Speaker 1: all I wore. Okay. So this was directed by the
[8:15] Speaker 1: one and only Kenny Ortega Kevin.
[8:18] Speaker 2: I mean, Kenny Ortega is a legend. I mean he
[8:22] Speaker 2: directed Newsz's Pocus Pocus Chetah Girls two. The Three Descendants films.
[8:28] Speaker 2: He's choreographed for Xanadu, saying almost fire pretty in pink,
[8:31] Speaker 2: Ferris Bueller, Dirty dancing.
[8:33] Speaker 1: Yeah, don't skip over dirty dancing, Kevin.
[8:36] Speaker 2: Oh, I emphasize dirty.
[8:37] Speaker 1: Kenny Ortiga did dirty dancing. This is the sound trick
[8:43] Speaker 1: to my life. It is the movie that plays in
[8:44] Speaker 1: my mind. It was this was before high school musical,
[8:48] Speaker 1: This is before it all. This is Greece, this is eighties,
[8:51] Speaker 1: this is Xanadu. This is like he is oh God,
[8:57] Speaker 1: like he is it for me?
[8:59] Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, And he also worked on tours for everyone, Kiss,
[9:04] Speaker 2: Olivia Newton, John cher Madonna, Miley, Michael Jackson. I mean,
[9:10] Speaker 2: if anybody saw the Michael Jackson movie, this is it
[9:12] Speaker 2: after he passed away all over that.
[9:16] Speaker 1: So talking about the Cherry Picker.
[9:18] Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. So Kenny Ortega, they brought in the big
[9:22] Speaker 2: guns here, which was smart. I feel like Kenny Ortega
[9:25] Speaker 2: because he's done so many different things. He's worked with
[9:28] Speaker 2: Disney a lot. He understands this demographic. This was written
[9:33] Speaker 2: by Peter Barsacchini.
[9:37] Speaker 1: And there's so many stars in this that were stars
[9:41] Speaker 1: after this movie.
[9:43] Speaker 2: Everyone, Zach Efron, Vanessa Hutchins, Ashley Tisdale, Lucas, Grabiel, Corvin, Blue,
[9:47] Speaker 2: Monique Coleman, Bart Johnson, Alison Reed, like everybody.
[9:52] Speaker 1: Wow, wow, wow wow. Yeah, there's a lot of really
[9:57] Speaker 1: great songs, iconic numbers in this that begins with in
[10:04] Speaker 1: the first thirty seconds of the movie. Maybe a little
[10:09] Speaker 1: more than that, but started something new with Troy and Gabriella.
[10:12] Speaker 2: Literally it was the start of something new. Get you
[10:16] Speaker 2: ahead in the game, like come.
[10:19] Speaker 1: On, oh my god, what a number. Okay, what I've
[10:22] Speaker 1: been looking for? And then also the one I've been
[10:24] Speaker 1: looking for Rupriez.
[10:26] Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, there's two different versions here. You gotta get
[10:29] Speaker 2: that Ryan and Sharpai Din the Troy and Gabriella version.
[10:34] Speaker 2: It's had too Billy. So Demmy Lovado when you first
[10:39] Speaker 2: moved to California, her family lived with my family. They
[10:43] Speaker 2: moved in with us for a little bit, and Demmy
[10:45] Speaker 2: and I would sing the high school musical soundtrack together
[10:49] Speaker 2: all the time. She would like, get on my keyboard
[10:52] Speaker 2: and we would do the Troy and Gabriella.
[10:55] Speaker 1: Doo yeah what what a sentence.
[11:01] Speaker 2: All the time. All the time she was thirteen, I
[11:04] Speaker 2: was like sixteen.
[11:05] Speaker 1: I remember you talking about her and saying how wildly
[11:07] Speaker 1: talented she is, and it's just ridiculous.
[11:09] Speaker 3: See all the time insane stick to the status quo,
[11:15] Speaker 3: when there was me and you, bop to the top,
[11:20] Speaker 3: breaking free.
[11:22] Speaker 2: The best and we're all in this together.
[11:25] Speaker 1: Oh my god. So High School Musical was originally just
[11:28] Speaker 1: a working title while producers searched for a better name.
[11:33] Speaker 1: By post production, no better options are found, so they
[11:36] Speaker 1: just stuck with it.
[11:37] Speaker 2: I like that. I liked it because even when people
[11:39] Speaker 2: get weird about like song title names, they like use
[11:43] Speaker 2: a word that it's not even in the song, and
[11:44] Speaker 2: everyone ends up calling it something else, like just call
[11:47] Speaker 2: it that.
[11:48] Speaker 1: It was called that what. I can't imagine if being
[11:50] Speaker 1: called anything else. Yeah.
[11:52] Speaker 2: Writer Peter Barzacini named Gabriella after his daughter and based
[11:56] Speaker 2: Troy on his late father, who had been a basketball coach.
[11:59] Speaker 1: So over six hundred teen's auditioned for the movie, and
[12:01] Speaker 1: Vanessa Hudgens beat out twelve of their girls at callbacks,
[12:04] Speaker 1: where they sang and danced all day for the role
[12:07] Speaker 1: of Gabriella. I auditioned for this, you did, I did? Honestly,
[12:11] Speaker 1: this makes sense though, this is like a total wheelhouse.
[12:15] Speaker 2: Yeah, I didn't know what it was.
[12:16] Speaker 1: Did you want audition for Troy or was it like
[12:18] Speaker 1: just a general.
[12:20] Speaker 2: I think I remember going on. I think it was
[12:23] Speaker 2: on the Universal backlot. I mean, why is that Disney?
[12:25] Speaker 1: Wow?
[12:26] Speaker 2: I don't know, but yeah, I did not do well.
[12:29] Speaker 2: It was one of my worst auditions. In fact, Naya
[12:33] Speaker 2: Rivera also auditioned, while Disney originally wanted Cassie Steele but
[12:37] Speaker 2: heard a grassy schedule conflicted and she had to drop out.
[12:40] Speaker 1: Whoa, We have to talk about the Naya of it all?
[12:43] Speaker 1: So do you know what this controversy on? TikTok?
[12:47] Speaker 4: No?
[12:49] Speaker 1: How do I know this?
[12:51] Speaker 2: What are you talking about?
[12:52] Speaker 1: You know? Obviously we know that Drew Seely doubled for
[12:56] Speaker 1: zax Boys and did the hybrid. Yeah, there is a
[13:00] Speaker 1: song that Vanessa sings that the lower notes either sound
[13:05] Speaker 1: modified for her or somebody else punched in to do them,
[13:11] Speaker 1: and the voice sounds so eerily like Nya's it's scary.
[13:17] Speaker 2: Oh, we did talk about this. We talked about this, Yes,
[13:20] Speaker 2: we've talked about this. She would have told us, yeah,
[13:23] Speaker 2: and I don't think they would have, like Vanessa sang
[13:25] Speaker 2: all of her stuff, Like, why would they have somebody
[13:26] Speaker 2: punch in on some lower notes. It just doesn't make
[13:28] Speaker 2: any sense.
[13:32] Speaker 1: So they modified it. You think they fixed it to
[13:34] Speaker 1: get her to hit those notes. Yeah, it does sound
[13:37] Speaker 1: like her. I don't think it sounds like Naya. I
[13:41] Speaker 1: don't think it's Nya. I don't it's definitely not Vanessa.
[13:45] Speaker 1: I don't think it's Vanessa. But I don't think it's Naya.
[13:48] Speaker 2: I think that's probably like the writer of the song
[13:51] Speaker 2: or something, you know, like somebody punched it in. Definitely,
[13:56] Speaker 2: it is wild. I mean they were doing that with Zach,
[13:59] Speaker 2: like in an out when it would get to the
[14:01] Speaker 2: speaking parts, or like the beginning of the song, the
[14:03] Speaker 2: very end of the song would be Zach, the rest
[14:04] Speaker 2: of it would be Drew Selee. Sometimes sometimes it was
[14:07] Speaker 2: just completely Drew seely. So they weren't above doing that clearly.
[14:12] Speaker 1: Yeah. No, definitely.
[14:14] Speaker 2: And it wasn't like slick like it wasn't Yeah, yeah.
[14:18] Speaker 1: Yeah exactly. I don't think they cared all that much.
[14:21] Speaker 2: No, okay.
[14:23] Speaker 1: Ashley Tisdale originally auditioned for Gabriella, but was cast to
[14:27] Speaker 1: Sharpei after auditioning with Lucas Grabiel, who had first auditioned
[14:30] Speaker 1: for Troy before being cast as Ryan.
[14:32] Speaker 2: And corn Blue also considered auditing for Ryan. After watching
[14:36] Speaker 2: grave Bield Dance, he switched to Chad and won the part.
[14:39] Speaker 1: The movie only had ten days of rehearsal Kevin, It
[14:41] Speaker 1: was shot in just twenty four days, with all the
[14:44] Speaker 1: songs being recorded before filming even began.
[14:46] Speaker 2: That makes sense. The cast completed two weeks of intense
[14:50] Speaker 2: dance rehearsals to prepare.
[14:52] Speaker 1: And like we mentioned, zac efron singing voice was dubbed
[14:55] Speaker 1: by Drew Sille, who had auditioned for Troy, seely saying
[14:58] Speaker 1: all of gets ahead in the game reprise of what
[15:00] Speaker 1: I've been looking for and most of the duets.
[15:03] Speaker 2: I was obsessed with his voice when this came out.
[15:06] Speaker 2: Drew's voice was everything I wanted to have.
[15:09] Speaker 1: Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, it's beautiful.
[15:12] Speaker 2: Yeah, it's unbelievable. I'm still upset watching this movie last
[15:15] Speaker 2: Night's still upset that my voice is not that high.
[15:19] Speaker 2: It was important that the songs were radio friendly so
[15:21] Speaker 2: they could play on radio.
[15:22] Speaker 1: Disney Yeah and High School Musical was Disney Channel's most
[15:26] Speaker 1: successful movie at the time, with seven point seven million
[15:29] Speaker 1: viewers on premiere night.
[15:30] Speaker 2: Wow Too broke down later that year. You know it,
[15:35] Speaker 2: but High School Musical two still holds that record with
[15:40] Speaker 2: seventeen point two million viewers. Jeez, they more than doubled
[15:46] Speaker 2: what they originally had.
[15:48] Speaker 1: So it was one of the first films ever sold
[15:51] Speaker 1: on the iTunes store, groundbreaking.
[15:54] Speaker 2: It was considered lightning in a bottle, of course, before
[15:57] Speaker 2: High School Musical, Disney Channel was seen mostly as the
[16:00] Speaker 2: company's kids cable channel.
[16:02] Speaker 1: And the only two billion dollar franchises on Disney our
[16:11] Speaker 1: High School Musical and Hannah Montana.
[16:13] Speaker 2: This movie was so big Michael Jackson watched it and
[16:16] Speaker 2: called Zac Efron to say they enjoyed the movie.
[16:23] Speaker 1: Oh my god, he'sack.
[16:27] Speaker 2: It's Michael, I really enjoyed your movie.
[16:31] Speaker 1: And I guess Ephron cried because yeah, I would cry too.
[16:43] Speaker 1: Give me the official summary.
[16:45] Speaker 2: Oh you ready, Jenna, I'm ready. Troy and Gabriella meet
[16:49] Speaker 2: unexpectedly during their winter vacation, without knowing that Gabriella is
[16:53] Speaker 2: transferring to East High Troy's school. There, Gabriella and Troy
[16:58] Speaker 2: are encouraged to audition or the new musical, rivaling the
[17:02] Speaker 2: talented siblings Sharpay and Ryan. As they overcome their fear
[17:05] Speaker 2: of trying out for the play, they have the whole
[17:08] Speaker 2: school challenge the status quo.
[17:10] Speaker 1: It's funny because after like obviously you have like Breakfast Club,
[17:17] Speaker 1: you have the John Hughes high school films with the stereotypes,
[17:23] Speaker 1: you know, these underdog characters, these romantic you know, sixteen
[17:29] Speaker 1: Candles esque shows, but like movies, but I don't remember
[17:35] Speaker 1: the last time there was or ever that there was
[17:37] Speaker 1: one about a musical like this, right, and like we
[17:42] Speaker 1: talked about in Glee, like the musical numbers lend itself
[17:48] Speaker 1: to like breaking out because you're in a high school
[17:51] Speaker 1: that has a musical theater program and there's a musical
[17:54] Speaker 1: and so this was like really groundbreaking in a lot
[17:59] Speaker 1: of ways. While playing into those stereotypes, I'm thinking, like
[18:03] Speaker 1: the mean Girls, you know why mean Girls did so well.
[18:06] Speaker 1: It's like you lean into those stereotypes and then you
[18:09] Speaker 1: like break them and you break the mold. I was
[18:14] Speaker 1: like transported in this movie back to the early two thousands. Yes,
[18:21] Speaker 1: it's very strange now watching it again after watching Glee,
[18:24] Speaker 1: because they're so different in so many ways. I mean
[18:28] Speaker 1: just from tone and look and style production, like it's
[18:35] Speaker 1: all so different. But I there was like a part
[18:43] Speaker 1: of that. It was kind of jarring to me because
[18:45] Speaker 1: I was like, oh, it's kind of like looser and
[18:48] Speaker 1: less produced in some ways, like the musical numbers, you know,
[18:52] Speaker 1: it was more Kenny's style than this polished you know
[18:58] Speaker 1: kind of yeah this sheene that you know you put
[19:03] Speaker 1: over Glee.
[19:05] Speaker 2: So well, I think part of that is budget, purely
[19:09] Speaker 2: just budget. They shot this in twenty four days, which
[19:14] Speaker 2: is insane.
[19:15] Speaker 1: It's an indie film, does that mean?
[19:17] Speaker 2: Yeah, So I think they did this like for no
[19:19] Speaker 2: money basically, and then it became the biggest thing in
[19:22] Speaker 2: the world. And it feels like that. It feels a
[19:25] Speaker 2: little rough around the edges. But like, I think the
[19:28] Speaker 2: demographic you're appealing to with this, like I was in
[19:30] Speaker 2: high school when this came out, they don't really care.
[19:33] Speaker 2: They're not noticing those those little things and watching. Yeah,
[19:39] Speaker 2: and I think just seeing like god, the status quo
[19:44] Speaker 2: challenged is like a trope and it works really well,
[19:49] Speaker 2: Like it doesn't need to be overly complicated. I think
[19:52] Speaker 2: seeing somebody in like the Disney Way where like they're
[19:55] Speaker 2: not calling you know.
[19:57] Speaker 1: They're good.
[19:58] Speaker 2: They called Troy everything but gay for auditioning.
[20:03] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[20:04] Speaker 1: Yeah, So it's it's like a.
[20:06] Speaker 2: Clean, good, fun and then you know, they don't protest
[20:09] Speaker 2: it for too long, right, and everybody.
[20:13] Speaker 1: It's like the Disney model, right, Like Disney had such
[20:17] Speaker 1: a specific it still has such a specific brand of
[20:20] Speaker 1: like who their audience is, who they're speaking to, how
[20:26] Speaker 1: they're speaking to them, how they're not speaking to them.
[20:30] Speaker 1: And it's almost like as an actor when you and
[20:33] Speaker 1: I'm sure you experienced this, probably more than I did
[20:36] Speaker 1: because I was kind of in the New York scene
[20:37] Speaker 1: at this time, but like every kid who was in
[20:41] Speaker 1: LA auditioning for zers auditioning for Disney shows. Yeah, and
[20:44] Speaker 1: it's a very specific style.
[20:48] Speaker 2: Oh, I mean I spent my early teens like never
[20:52] Speaker 2: Filled the Future. Yeah, like that was the one I
[20:54] Speaker 2: got closest on, and I like went to network. Wow,
[20:59] Speaker 2: But like I had to learn how to like Disney
[21:02] Speaker 2: do the Disney acting.
[21:03] Speaker 1: Yeah, there's acting coaches that do Disney specifically, because it's
[21:07] Speaker 1: like doing a multiicam versus like doing a single camera,
[21:10] Speaker 1: which for people who don't know, the multiicam is like
[21:13] Speaker 1: like friends or what's another one big bang? Yeah, or
[21:19] Speaker 1: what's an younger one, like I don't know, two have
[21:22] Speaker 1: like all of those right, really ages this, but but
[21:28] Speaker 1: doing it in front of a live audience, much bigger,
[21:30] Speaker 1: much more stage kind of theatrical versus the single cam,
[21:34] Speaker 1: you know, like like modern Family, right half hour and
[21:39] Speaker 1: and and it's so specific and you have to it's
[21:43] Speaker 1: kind of like it takes a little getting used to. Almost,
[21:46] Speaker 1: like the jokes hit different, the punchlines are different. Like
[21:49] Speaker 1: it's just it's a style.
[21:51] Speaker 2: I had a similar reaction watching this as I did
[21:56] Speaker 2: to watching the later seasons of Glee, because when this
[22:00] Speaker 2: movie came out, I was a bit of a hater.
[22:07] Speaker 1: This movie.
[22:07] Speaker 2: Yeah, I think I was just like, I don't know, hypercritical,
[22:13] Speaker 2: a little pretentious about like musicals. I was obsessed with
[22:17] Speaker 2: the Chicago movie and so like they were doing a
[22:20] Speaker 2: musical and like I loved Moulin Rouge, you know, and
[22:24] Speaker 2: then this came out and this is like the next musical.
[22:26] Speaker 2: I'm like, what is stylistically very different? I'm like, this
[22:30] Speaker 2: is trash. Yes, However, I was obsessed with the music,
[22:35] Speaker 2: obsessed with everybody in it.
[22:36] Speaker 1: Yep.
[22:37] Speaker 2: I didn't necessarily watch it on repeat, but I listened
[22:39] Speaker 2: to the music on repeat, and then I was, to
[22:43] Speaker 2: be honest, I was I was dreading it a little bit.
[22:45] Speaker 2: Last night that I had to watch it, and I
[22:50] Speaker 2: had the time of my life. It flew by. I
[22:57] Speaker 2: literally would get I got up like twice during it
[22:59] Speaker 2: and ran into the other room where Austin was and
[23:01] Speaker 2: I'm like, you got to come out here. Like I
[23:05] Speaker 2: had the greatest time and I got it because like
[23:08] Speaker 2: I'm not sitting here, I'm not judging it. I know
[23:11] Speaker 2: what it is, and like they were all so good.
[23:14] Speaker 2: Everybody did so well without the context that they did
[23:18] Speaker 2: this in two weeks basically or three weeks, Like who
[23:24] Speaker 2: like it is? It works so so it's not over complicated.
[23:27] Speaker 2: There's some like story holes you know that don't really
[23:31] Speaker 2: get answered, Like it doesn't doesn't have story holes, do
[23:33] Speaker 2: you know what I mean? Like yeah, like it doesn't matter,
[23:35] Speaker 2: but you know why it doesn't matter. I think three things.
[23:41] Speaker 2: Here's my thesis. Analysis analysis the actors. They cast this
[23:49] Speaker 2: movie so well. Everybody's star yep. I think Vanessa Hudgens
[23:55] Speaker 2: some of that dialogue is real question and she gets
[23:59] Speaker 2: away with murder. Yes, she does everything that comes out
[24:03] Speaker 2: of her mouth. I'm like, I buy it. You are
[24:05] Speaker 2: so sweet, You're so good Zach. Zach has always been
[24:09] Speaker 2: a great actor. I think I'm just everybody. Ashley Tisdale,
[24:14] Speaker 2: Lucas grabil phenomenal. Also like Lucas surprise stand out for
[24:19] Speaker 2: me and this rewatch. So that's one. Two you did
[24:25] Speaker 2: not ask for this, but give it to me. Two.
[24:28] Speaker 2: I think the Kenny Ortega of it all. I mean,
[24:31] Speaker 2: like he understands precision and it being clean like Newsy's
[24:35] Speaker 2: is just perfection, right, Like he understands that. But this,
[24:40] Speaker 2: more than anything, he captures like the right feeling. Yes,
[24:44] Speaker 2: is what it is.
[24:46] Speaker 1: I mean, that's a good director, right, It's like all
[24:47] Speaker 1: the things he's done are so different and he like
[24:50] Speaker 1: he like breathes the world and like creates it and
[24:53] Speaker 1: it leans into it.
[24:54] Speaker 2: Right, let's see what it is. It doesn't complicate it is.
[24:57] Speaker 2: It's just a simple thing. I think the numbnumber one
[25:00] Speaker 2: takeaway from this and this is really obvious. But this
[25:04] Speaker 2: music is really good. These songs are so good. It
[25:12] Speaker 2: is so hard to write original music for something like this,
[25:16] Speaker 2: you know it's TV, you know it's Disney, and not
[25:18] Speaker 2: have it feel like it's just filler. Yes, Like, oh,
[25:21] Speaker 2: I'm just going to plug in. There's a relationship. Okay,
[25:23] Speaker 2: We're just going to do it.
[25:25] Speaker 1: There was a lot of stork in this. This is
[25:27] Speaker 1: the story, we're telling story. It's driving the plot, yes,
[25:31] Speaker 1: driving the story. It's driving the characters. It's it's it's
[25:34] Speaker 1: like the characters are developed as simple as they may
[25:38] Speaker 1: come across, right, they are. They are just clear, they
[25:45] Speaker 1: are concise. They are driven by both the actors and
[25:48] Speaker 1: the story and Kenny, and they are relatable, where these
[25:54] Speaker 1: stereotypical book nartworm you know, Jock couldn't possibly veer into
[26:01] Speaker 1: something else that is seen as unconventional, right, Yeah. I
[26:09] Speaker 1: it's funny because I actually didn't watch this when it
[26:12] Speaker 1: came out. I was a total theater nerd, and I
[26:17] Speaker 1: was like, I was also like very pretentious in that theater,
[26:24] Speaker 1: pretentious in that time of like how could a musical
[26:27] Speaker 1: on TV about high school kids practically succeed in this way?
[26:33] Speaker 1: You know, it's like we've been working our thoughts off.
[26:35] Speaker 1: It's like, shut up, Like it's actually really enjoyable. But
[26:40] Speaker 1: I didn't watch it until I think closer to when
[26:43] Speaker 1: I moved here for Glee. Really m hmmm mm hmm.
[26:49] Speaker 1: And I remember vaguely watching high school musical you perhaps,
[26:56] Speaker 1: and what year did that come out? So maybe I
[26:57] Speaker 1: did watch it. It was a year after. Wow, that's fast. No,
[27:01] Speaker 1: maybe it was high school musical. Was there a three?
[27:03] Speaker 2: Three? Was like in theaters?
[27:06] Speaker 1: Yeah? Yeah, yeah, Is this the one where he dances
[27:08] Speaker 1: in the golf course?
[27:09] Speaker 2: No, that's two.
[27:10] Speaker 1: Okay, so I watched too, so I must have seen
[27:13] Speaker 1: it then entire real time. So that was Actually I
[27:16] Speaker 1: was still in New York, but there was like a
[27:18] Speaker 1: sense of I don't know, seeing it through different lens
[27:20] Speaker 1: this time around last night that was like, is this
[27:25] Speaker 1: is this a little Disney afied for me? Yes? Stylistically
[27:29] Speaker 1: like I didn't have the time of my life watching
[27:32] Speaker 1: it like you did. Yeah, but I appreciate it, like
[27:37] Speaker 1: they were great, the performances were great, the world was there,
[27:42] Speaker 1: like all the things lined up for me because I.
[27:47] Speaker 2: Think I haven't seen it since we did Glee and
[27:49] Speaker 2: then obviously just watching it, and I think it's easy
[27:53] Speaker 2: to take it all for granted. Everything. It's easy to
[27:58] Speaker 2: take how hard it is to act one on a
[28:01] Speaker 2: Disney movie or TV show and two to act in
[28:06] Speaker 2: a musical and perform it like that, and everybody I
[28:10] Speaker 2: didn't see one ounce of doubt and everybody's in anybody's eyes.
[28:15] Speaker 1: That's probably because Kenny, you know what I mean?
[28:17] Speaker 2: Just like it's like Zach is not even saying is
[28:20] Speaker 2: not He's lip singing to somebody else's voice.
[28:22] Speaker 1: And you never know. I literally was like you never know?
[28:26] Speaker 2: Bought and sold.
[28:35] Speaker 1: Can we talk about some of these favorite moments from
[28:39] Speaker 1: the musical, Like obviously all the musical numbers were really fun,
[28:44] Speaker 1: especially like the Glee Cheerios numbers for me, like get
[28:50] Speaker 1: you ahead in the game, Oh my God, like stick
[28:54] Speaker 1: to the status quo, like the cafeteria, like totally in
[28:59] Speaker 1: into it. But the auditions, the bad auditions really.
[29:04] Speaker 2: Got me phenomenal, and I remember each of those.
[29:10] Speaker 1: I have to say, it actually takes a talented person
[29:13] Speaker 1: to do a bad audition, believably. It's almost it's like
[29:19] Speaker 1: it's like playing somebody who's inebriated, right or intoxicated on something.
[29:26] Speaker 1: You have to play against it and not play into it,
[29:29] Speaker 1: or it's not as funny. And these guys were like
[29:33] Speaker 1: so badly good.
[29:38] Speaker 2: And it went on for a long time.
[29:41] Speaker 1: I also feel like Kenny lives in that world so
[29:44] Speaker 1: deeply that, like you, you've seen so many bad auditions
[29:48] Speaker 1: that like whatever he told them or whatever they came
[29:50] Speaker 1: in with was like, that's it, Like I've seen this
[29:53] Speaker 1: one hundred times before. You're just you're you could be talented,
[29:58] Speaker 1: there's potential, but you're not there yet.
[30:01] Speaker 2: My favorite one was the last girl who almost looked
[30:06] Speaker 2: embarrassed as she was doing it, but still did it.
[30:10] Speaker 2: And I made up a whole backstory for her because
[30:13] Speaker 2: I was like, she works behind the scenes on this
[30:15] Speaker 2: movie and they needed somebody. Somebody went up to karaoke
[30:19] Speaker 2: with her and saw that she loves it but cannot sing,
[30:23] Speaker 2: and so they're like, we need you to do that
[30:26] Speaker 2: and just sing your face off, like commit to it,
[30:30] Speaker 2: like you're in your car, and that was like her
[30:33] Speaker 2: real voice, and she did it. No offense to that girl.
[30:37] Speaker 1: The girl who is winking at it's the most awkward
[30:43] Speaker 1: thing when you're sitting behind a table as a producer,
[30:46] Speaker 1: director somebody and they're staring straight in the eyes. There's
[30:50] Speaker 1: actually nothing worse. And we've seen it time and time again,
[30:54] Speaker 1: and it's one of those rules. It's like a big
[30:56] Speaker 1: no no. So I just appreciated seeing that one.
[31:01] Speaker 2: You know, what's such a skill, like all the things
[31:04] Speaker 2: you just mentioned, like get you ahead in the game,
[31:08] Speaker 2: stick to the status quo, and these auditions they're all
[31:11] Speaker 2: like the cliche musical or high school movie tropes. Yep,
[31:18] Speaker 2: and yet we remember all of these ones so specifically,
[31:23] Speaker 2: like to be able to take a basketball practice and
[31:27] Speaker 2: like make it into The choreography is not complicated, but
[31:31] Speaker 2: it looks great. It looks like high school students could
[31:34] Speaker 2: actually do this, and it's it's synchronous, it is, and
[31:39] Speaker 2: it has your moments of drama. It has like the spotlight,
[31:42] Speaker 2: it has you know, it plays with that, but it
[31:45] Speaker 2: also like you're doing these beauty. He shoots dance properly.
[31:49] Speaker 1: Oh, yes it does. Yes, he does, Yes, it does, Yes,
[31:52] Speaker 1: he does.
[31:53] Speaker 2: He shoots dance properly.
[31:55] Speaker 1: He's done this before.
[31:56] Speaker 2: Nobody. I don't think anybody today shoots dance properly. I'm
[32:01] Speaker 2: going down with that ship. I don't think anybody does.
[32:05] Speaker 2: I have yet to see it.
[32:07] Speaker 1: Since I won't name names, fine, I'm not that bold.
[32:12] Speaker 1: But for Kenny, Kenny is the beginning and the shoots dance.
[32:17] Speaker 1: Probably he's like to build out that high school cafeteria.
[32:20] Speaker 1: We're not getting a lot of angles. No, it's all
[32:23] Speaker 1: like proscenium, right, it's all like facing out. But man,
[32:27] Speaker 1: he spaces it, he shoots it. It's it's just it
[32:32] Speaker 1: all works as an independent number. Yes, musical numbers. He's
[32:37] Speaker 1: shooting musical numbers. Music videos, Yes, pieces of music, music
[32:42] Speaker 1: videos within the movie.
[32:44] Speaker 2: We're all in this together. He's like, use it. We're
[32:46] Speaker 2: doing to bring it online and start that off. But
[32:49] Speaker 2: like all of it feels unique and special to this world,
[32:53] Speaker 2: to the high school musical world.
[32:55] Speaker 1: Yeah, try and Gabrielle to meet in on vacation and
[33:00] Speaker 1: they get stuck pinned together accidentally. I guess.
[33:04] Speaker 2: Oh, it's a real loose, real loose plot here.
[33:08] Speaker 1: Just throwing spotlights on them, start or something new. They
[33:12] Speaker 1: meet each other, They're like, let's keep in touch. They
[33:15] Speaker 1: don't keep in touch. He's like I looked. She's like,
[33:17] Speaker 1: I look for you. He's like, I had to leave
[33:20] Speaker 1: the next day. I have your number, but I had
[33:21] Speaker 1: to leave the next day.
[33:22] Speaker 2: Plot also, they like took pictures of each other, but
[33:25] Speaker 2: like when did they? I I feel like, on paper,
[33:29] Speaker 2: there's no reason why this movie should.
[33:31] Speaker 1: Have worked totally. But they made it. They leaned in.
[33:35] Speaker 1: They just believed it so deeply that we believed it,
[33:38] Speaker 1: do you know what I mean? Yes, they end up
[33:42] Speaker 1: she gets transferred to the school. They are both in
[33:45] Speaker 1: their lanes. He's basketball jock, she's the you know, math nerd.
[33:52] Speaker 1: And they decide that they're going to audition for the musical.
[33:56] Speaker 1: And they're Archie Nemesis, Becolm Sharpey and and Ryan brother
[34:02] Speaker 1: and sister duo wonderful Polish duo who lead the drama club,
[34:08] Speaker 1: do the drama Club. They are the Drama Club. And
[34:11] Speaker 1: so when these two threatening figures come in, they're like,
[34:14] Speaker 1: what are we going to do?
[34:16] Speaker 2: Shout out to Ashley, because I mean.
[34:18] Speaker 1: She's she also makes like a mean character likable do that? No.
[34:25] Speaker 2: I was like, it's that line of she leans in
[34:28] Speaker 2: where she needs to lean in, and it's like she's
[34:30] Speaker 2: sort of awful sometimes but not terrible, Like you don't, well, that's.
[34:36] Speaker 1: The joy of what it's actually it is terrible, but
[34:38] Speaker 1: she's actually she makes it not so terrible. Like if
[34:41] Speaker 1: you read that on paper, you're like, I bet you
[34:44] Speaker 1: the audition was like you know when you go on
[34:46] Speaker 1: an audition and you come out and they call you
[34:48] Speaker 1: back and they're like, can you make it not as mean?
[34:50] Speaker 1: But everything on the page is mean. She did that.
[34:53] Speaker 1: She came back and she was like, I'm making this
[34:55] Speaker 1: not mean, I'm gonna make this character likable.
[34:58] Speaker 2: In any moment there was like when she snapped, except
[35:00] Speaker 2: the girl who wrote the whole musical, it's like delicious
[35:06] Speaker 2: and earned, and so I feel like.
[35:10] Speaker 1: Yeah, she does a great job. They do. I mean,
[35:13] Speaker 1: they're so so great in this and they're just like,
[35:16] Speaker 1: it's such a nice contrast to Troy and Gabriella, and
[35:20] Speaker 1: so they evil Knievel. They plot out that they're going
[35:26] Speaker 1: to to move the audition the callbacks up to the
[35:29] Speaker 1: time of the decathlon and of the of the finals
[35:33] Speaker 1: right right.
[35:34] Speaker 2: Because Gabrielle is a smart one, She's gonna they want
[35:36] Speaker 2: her and like the nerdy friends want her to do
[35:39] Speaker 2: the decathlon, and obviously Troy and all his basketball friends
[35:42] Speaker 2: want him to go to the championship game, which also
[35:46] Speaker 2: is funny because at one point in the movie they
[35:48] Speaker 2: refer to it as a playoff game, like you've already
[35:52] Speaker 2: said this is the championship game, and later on you
[35:54] Speaker 2: say it's the championship game again, So what is it, folks.
[35:58] Speaker 1: What is it? What is it? They also, I have
[36:02] Speaker 1: to say the scene where Gabriella they like show the
[36:05] Speaker 1: video of Troy saying that she doesn't mean anything and
[36:07] Speaker 1: they're going to go win the final and then she
[36:10] Speaker 1: just cries and they're like, do you want to go
[36:11] Speaker 1: to lunch?
[36:15] Speaker 4: I was like, whoa, whoa, she's crying, she's giving us tears,
[36:22] Speaker 4: and they're like, well, we're gonna be at lunch, come
[36:25] Speaker 4: join us.
[36:27] Speaker 2: You know what I really loved was the mixing of
[36:31] Speaker 2: all these different groups that clicks in high school, that
[36:35] Speaker 2: don't get along, but they all teamed up because they
[36:37] Speaker 2: have the same goal. Even though it was bad.
[36:40] Speaker 1: There's something about like the community coming together for one
[36:44] Speaker 1: shared thing that's neither than themselves.
[36:46] Speaker 2: It's like to break up this couple basically from doing
[36:49] Speaker 2: what they really want to do. The nerds and the
[36:52] Speaker 2: jocks got to get together to convince Gabriella, you know
[36:57] Speaker 2: that she has to go to the decathlon or the
[37:00] Speaker 2: athletes whatever it is. Yeah, yeah, and Troy has to
[37:05] Speaker 2: go to the championship game because like, Troy doesn't respect
[37:11] Speaker 2: Gabriella and Gabriella doesn't actually like Troy.
[37:13] Speaker 1: Right, But how quickly they were to change their tune
[37:20] Speaker 1: because I was mad at them both. I was like
[37:22] Speaker 1: the groups. I was like Wow, you guys are really
[37:25] Speaker 1: very selfish right now, these kids obviously want to do
[37:27] Speaker 1: the musical. Wow, how selfish could you be? And then
[37:31] Speaker 1: all of a sudden and they're like, we're so sorry,
[37:34] Speaker 1: we didn't mean it.
[37:36] Speaker 2: I love that because you do. I'm like, it's exhausting
[37:39] Speaker 2: sort of watching its kind of high.
[37:41] Speaker 1: School like very fair Weather, you know, very fair Weather.
[37:47] Speaker 1: I feel like both of these musicals, both Glee and
[37:50] Speaker 1: High School Musical, they have these ideas of what show
[37:54] Speaker 1: choir is, what high school is like. Do you think
[37:58] Speaker 1: either of them were more accurate to you or come
[38:03] Speaker 1: across as a realer version? Are they both kind of
[38:06] Speaker 1: like suspended in this disbelief?
[38:09] Speaker 2: I feel like they're more suspended and disbelief, both of them, right, Yeah,
[38:14] Speaker 2: both of them. They're both camp They're both heightened in
[38:18] Speaker 2: a number of ways. I think the things that motivate
[38:21] Speaker 2: them are very real. I think, you know, Gabriella joining
[38:25] Speaker 2: a school and you know, wanting to be low key
[38:29] Speaker 2: and not be singled out as being like really smart,
[38:33] Speaker 2: even you know that stops her from auditioning for the musical.
[38:36] Speaker 2: That all makes a lot of sense, Like been there,
[38:40] Speaker 2: done that, same for Troy and it's very like Troy's
[38:43] Speaker 2: storyline is very similar to Finn's storyline, and I think,
[38:49] Speaker 2: you know, you want to be a leader, but it's
[38:51] Speaker 2: also like that age of discovery about yourself and it's like, oh,
[38:56] Speaker 2: I also do enjoy this thing, And like I think
[38:58] Speaker 2: we all have those moments in high school where its like,
[39:00] Speaker 2: well we have this, like you know, like stick to
[39:02] Speaker 2: the status quo when you each have like your own
[39:04] Speaker 2: little private thing but that you know people at school
[39:07] Speaker 2: are going to like make fun of you for and
[39:09] Speaker 2: you hide it.
[39:10] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[39:10] Speaker 2: And I think both of these shows, you know, movie
[39:14] Speaker 2: or show, do a good job of like using that
[39:17] Speaker 2: thing based in reality and then just kind of going
[39:21] Speaker 2: heightening it. I think Lee was sort of like the
[39:24] Speaker 2: what's the word the anti high school musical in a
[39:28] Speaker 2: lot of ways, because like we came out high Schoos
[39:30] Speaker 2: came out, was clean, it was bright, yeah, well you
[39:35] Speaker 2: know it was Disney.
[39:37] Speaker 1: It felt more my high school felt more like high
[39:39] Speaker 1: school musical. Like I just felt like more based in
[39:45] Speaker 1: this sense of camp but reality, Like I probably would
[39:51] Speaker 1: have gotten dressed up in a costume to do a
[39:54] Speaker 1: callback like that felt real to me, you know, and
[40:00] Speaker 1: maybe not the stereotypical jock, you know, having to give
[40:05] Speaker 1: choose one or the other because our school we did
[40:07] Speaker 1: have jocks in our theater program and it was like
[40:10] Speaker 1: cool to be in our theater program. So it was
[40:12] Speaker 1: a little bit different, but like it felt more based
[40:15] Speaker 1: in reality to me, whereas Glee felt like heightened to
[40:19] Speaker 1: the tenth degree and grounded to the tenth degree. So
[40:22] Speaker 1: we're just stretching the van I think a little bit
[40:25] Speaker 1: farther for Glee, and like just the world was bigger, brighter,
[40:30] Speaker 1: more expensive in a lot of ways, and I think
[40:33] Speaker 1: high school musical was rooted in a little bit more
[40:35] Speaker 1: of that, like relatable. I don't know, this is the
[40:39] Speaker 1: relatable stereotypes. I don't know, it's hard to explain.
[40:41] Speaker 2: But also, like the world itself, there weren't big set pieces,
[40:47] Speaker 2: you know, like all those things grounded. Yes, yes, yes,
[40:50] Speaker 2: it feels more relatable. You weren't having your you know,
[40:56] Speaker 2: art pop applause set and rare set right right, Yes,
[41:01] Speaker 2: So I totally agree with what you're saying. I think
[41:04] Speaker 2: it feels more real because it is it exists within
[41:07] Speaker 2: the confines of like what high school actually is. Where
[41:11] Speaker 2: Glee there's obviously a lot more going on than what
[41:15] Speaker 2: a normal high school could afford to do.
[41:18] Speaker 1: Before we rate the songs, I have a question for you.
[41:23] Speaker 1: If you were in Engley and you watched high School
[41:27] Speaker 1: Musical and then you watch Glee, which one do you
[41:29] Speaker 1: think you would have related more to or found yourself
[41:34] Speaker 1: watching more.
[41:37] Speaker 2: I think Glee only because I liked the darker humor
[41:41] Speaker 2: of it. I wasn't someone who liked the the bright
[41:45] Speaker 2: and squeaky clean stuff.
[41:46] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[41:47] Speaker 2: I liked like the slight snarkiness and meanness of Glee. Yes,
[41:53] Speaker 2: And I liked you know them them us doing current
[41:59] Speaker 2: songs be said, I think they both scratch a different.
[42:02] Speaker 1: Hitch, totally, totally.
[42:04] Speaker 2: That's the thing about you.
[42:05] Speaker 1: I don't know that like original songs to me hit
[42:09] Speaker 1: as hard or slap as hard as like the forties
[42:14] Speaker 1: and the top forties kind of like and just the
[42:18] Speaker 1: I don't know the scale of songs that we did.
[42:21] Speaker 1: You know, I think the music may Glee more kind
[42:25] Speaker 1: of relatable and attractive to me. But I think you're right.
[42:30] Speaker 1: I think they do scratch a different che And that's
[42:32] Speaker 1: why I like in all of our interviews and stuff,
[42:34] Speaker 1: we'd be like we appreciate high school musical for the
[42:37] Speaker 1: paving the way, but like we are in high school musical, right,
[42:40] Speaker 1: we're much darker than high school musical. It's I think
[42:42] Speaker 1: the answer that we gave a lot.
[42:44] Speaker 2: Yeah, I just don't think it would have worked without it,
[42:46] Speaker 2: because you need sort of like the antithesis of it.
[42:48] Speaker 2: Totally totally need that bright spot to show here's a
[42:51] Speaker 2: different version, and you need to sy Leicester. So yeah,
[42:56] Speaker 2: but I mean that being said about original music, it's
[42:59] Speaker 2: a great it's an easier entryway point in, I think,
[43:03] Speaker 2: but the way in which high school musical was able
[43:06] Speaker 2: to build in their original songs like everybody already knew them,
[43:10] Speaker 2: like they existed in that universe already, Like when Troy
[43:13] Speaker 2: and Gabriella meet and are doing that song at karaoke,
[43:17] Speaker 2: like that's an original song but they both know it
[43:20] Speaker 2: and we just buy it and we accept it. I
[43:22] Speaker 2: really like that. And I think because those songs are
[43:26] Speaker 2: so like earwarmy and hooky and pleasant that you just
[43:33] Speaker 2: want to hear more of them. But I think that's
[43:35] Speaker 2: an exception to the rule. I think that's just really
[43:37] Speaker 2: hard to do.
[43:38] Speaker 1: I agree with you. I also just wanted to point
[43:43] Speaker 1: out that I love when Troy Bolton is looking over
[43:45] Speaker 1: the shoulder Kelsey at the music and I'm like, At first,
[43:48] Speaker 1: I was like, is he reading right now?
[43:53] Speaker 2: And beyond that, I was like, oh, they've given up
[43:55] Speaker 2: looking down at the lyrics. Yea, almost immediately, but like again, who,
[44:02] Speaker 2: I'm just so excited there's two more of these. Oh,
[44:05] Speaker 2: we're gonna have to watch them, Jenna.
[44:07] Speaker 1: Definitely. I got to see from the day one success
[44:12] Speaker 1: to like where the budget was.
[44:14] Speaker 2: Well, that's the thing, because I want to know if
[44:16] Speaker 2: it grows, if the realism lessens a little bit because
[44:21] Speaker 2: the budget gets bigger. Like I bet the pilot of
[44:24] Speaker 2: Glee was way more expensive than the entirety of this movie.
[44:28] Speaker 1: Oh, hands down, I mean.
[44:32] Speaker 2: I bet it was.
[44:33] Speaker 1: No, you're right, You're right. It's also original music. Yeah,
[44:37] Speaker 1: you know we didn't have to license. Don't stop believing.
[44:41] Speaker 2: Do you think when you first watched this movie. Let's
[44:45] Speaker 2: say it was in two thousand and six, and I
[44:47] Speaker 2: remember where I was when I first watched this movie,
[44:50] Speaker 2: like where I was sitting and I watched it by
[44:52] Speaker 2: myself in the family room. Would you have wanted more
[45:00] Speaker 2: high school musical?
[45:02] Speaker 1: That's a good question. Well, I don't know that I
[45:06] Speaker 1: can answer that properly. But what I do know is
[45:08] Speaker 1: I watched too, right, So yes.
[45:14] Speaker 2: Like we we were probably both those people who like
[45:17] Speaker 2: secretly not secretly like we hated it.
[45:20] Speaker 1: We're like, I have to watch this thing. I'm gonna
[45:22] Speaker 1: watch the thing. But then you're like, well, I guess
[45:24] Speaker 1: i'll watch the.
[45:25] Speaker 2: Next There's only so much musical stuff out there exactly,
[45:28] Speaker 2: and we were both into it, so and now I'll
[45:30] Speaker 2: watch it and judge it whatever.
[45:32] Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, And then you're like, well, I guess I'll
[45:34] Speaker 1: watch a second. Then I guess i'll watch it third. Okay,
[45:45] Speaker 1: let's let's create performances. Now started something new B plus
[45:51] Speaker 1: Yeah plus, we haven't need somewhere to.
[45:54] Speaker 2: Gory A plus but yeah, B plus.
[45:57] Speaker 1: Get ahead in the game. A A. What I'm looking for.
[46:04] Speaker 2: They're so good. I actually it's so funny, Like I
[46:08] Speaker 2: remember how I felt watching them and how much I
[46:12] Speaker 2: didn't like them because I wasn't supposed to.
[46:14] Speaker 1: Like them run out but the.
[46:16] Speaker 2: Number, But now I enjoyed them so much because I'm like,
[46:20] Speaker 2: they're both so good.
[46:21] Speaker 1: I think I'm giving you today.
[46:23] Speaker 2: I think so too.
[46:24] Speaker 1: And what I've been looking for reprise A half plus
[46:32] Speaker 1: Somewhere to Go. I think that was my favorite sing
[46:35] Speaker 1: uh stick this asquo a A that when there was
[46:41] Speaker 1: me and you be Bop to the Top. Honestly banger
[46:48] Speaker 1: a Breaking Free the Top. Hated it growing up really
[46:52] Speaker 1: now loved it totally. That's one of those things too,
[46:55] Speaker 1: where my Daly been like a musical filler. But like
[46:58] Speaker 1: those they made it they Yeah, I bought into it.
[47:03] Speaker 1: I bought into it. Breaking Free A.
[47:05] Speaker 2: Plus A plus like breaking Free is it? Breaking Free
[47:09] Speaker 2: is the one?
[47:10] Speaker 1: We're all in this together a A. I remember while
[47:14] Speaker 1: we were in Glee rehearsals, like doing the clap. Yes,
[47:18] Speaker 1: it's so iconic. Yeah, it's iconical, Kevin iconical chartie takes.
[47:23] Speaker 1: Let's we're doing our first arty takes in this new.
[47:26] Speaker 2: Iconical era, going to find anything cringe?
[47:31] Speaker 1: I mean maybe there wasn't really anything out or the cringe,
[47:35] Speaker 1: except for like the fact that we weren't naming like
[47:39] Speaker 1: Troy Bolton and calling Tribolton guy. And they're like, let's
[47:43] Speaker 1: let's do this stereotypical thing and not really name it
[47:46] Speaker 1: but just kind of allude to it. It's just fine,
[47:50] Speaker 1: best dance move. We're all in this together.
[47:52] Speaker 2: Yeah, we're all in this together, followed by Kitchet Oh
[47:57] Speaker 2: oh yeah, I think I think a box step. Lucas
[48:01] Speaker 2: Grabiel was also up there.
[48:04] Speaker 1: Best song.
[48:10] Speaker 2: Mine are what I've been looking for Reprise and Breaking Free,
[48:14] Speaker 2: Breaking Free, So I sing these songs all the time.
[48:21] Speaker 3: By the you Do Yeah, like I don't remember them.
[48:24] Speaker 1: I don't remember them like you do.
[48:26] Speaker 2: I don't know what it is.
[48:28] Speaker 1: Best perference, my prop. I really like the cell phones.
[48:33] Speaker 1: It really like from the start, I was like, this
[48:36] Speaker 1: is where we are now, I know this time period correct.
[48:40] Speaker 2: I liked the cake.
[48:43] Speaker 1: Of course you did oh.
[48:44] Speaker 2: I also like the Go Drama Club shirts and Ryan
[48:48] Speaker 2: couldn't beat it.
[48:52] Speaker 1: I like the line Sharpey and zcav where he's like,
[48:58] Speaker 1: maybe you can watch his plays balls and she's like,
[49:00] Speaker 1: I'd rather stick pins in my eyes, and then she
[49:03] Speaker 1: was like evaborate, tall person.
[49:06] Speaker 2: I also like Sharpay saying Kelsey my sod off some time.
[49:10] Speaker 1: I guess performs MVP. I mean Vanessa honestly like group effort.
[49:18] Speaker 1: Vanessa and Zach obviously like held this thing, but like
[49:21] Speaker 1: group effort.
[49:23] Speaker 2: I think I'm gonna yeah Vanessa and Zach, I was
[49:28] Speaker 2: gonna see if I could just do one of them,
[49:29] Speaker 2: but I think it has to be both of them. Okay, okay, Jenna,
[49:33] Speaker 2: shit we found on TikTok spell word. I don't know
[49:37] Speaker 2: if I'm doing this. He does the River Deep, Mountain
[49:42] Speaker 2: high trend, but he also says, pov I'm your ra
[49:45] Speaker 2: oh and he has a full find your Glee and
[49:48] Speaker 2: Honors board.
[49:50] Speaker 1: Oh my god.
[49:51] Speaker 2: Spencer with a slushie on his door are a Spencer.
[49:57] Speaker 2: And then he does the run.
[49:58] Speaker 1: Yes, he does the run. We love the run.
[50:00] Speaker 2: It's so good. I also, I just I'm tickled by
[50:03] Speaker 2: that that trend, that that run is still a thing
[50:07] Speaker 2: that really makes me happy. And also like how why
[50:11] Speaker 2: I don't know, but really love it. Jen, I really
[50:16] Speaker 2: enjoyed High School Musical.
[50:19] Speaker 1: I did too, I really did. I. I was a
[50:23] Speaker 1: little shocked at first. I was like, oh God, we
[50:26] Speaker 1: have to watch this musical TV show. I've just been
[50:30] Speaker 1: it's been a minute, and I was like, I think
[50:34] Speaker 1: I had a notion about it. And when I got
[50:36] Speaker 1: into it, I was like I got to lean in
[50:38] Speaker 1: like everybody else in this movie leaned, and overall I
[50:41] Speaker 1: thought it was exactly what I had hoped for.
[50:45] Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm glad that's the thing that became really big. Yes,
[50:50] Speaker 2: I got feel good about it. Yeah, me too, Me
[50:52] Speaker 2: too deserved. So we have some very exciting things coming.
[50:57] Speaker 2: We're talking to coach Bolton himself and fellow iHeartRadio podcast
[51:02] Speaker 2: host Bart Johnson and Ryan Evans. Lucas Grayville is also
[51:08] Speaker 2: going to come on the show and talk to us.
[51:11] Speaker 1: So iconic.
[51:13] Speaker 2: I can't questions ready for him because, oh my god,
[51:16] Speaker 2: he's a friend of mine. He's become a friend of
[51:17] Speaker 2: mine post Glee and.
[51:20] Speaker 1: Won the World's Collide.
[51:21] Speaker 2: Kevin, and I always ask him so many questions.
[51:25] Speaker 1: I can't wait to ask him all the questions. I
[51:27] Speaker 1: have so many questions.
[51:28] Speaker 2: I'll just reask a lot of them because O great,
[51:30] Speaker 2: because we never got to like we were constantly compared
[51:32] Speaker 2: to high school musical, but we weren't really close with
[51:35] Speaker 2: anybody from high school musical yep, And we never got
[51:38] Speaker 2: to sort of exchange stories or information like how does
[51:42] Speaker 2: this work? Yeah, and afterwards I'm like, would you guys
[51:46] Speaker 2: get paid?
[51:47] Speaker 1: Oh my god, Well we're not asking that, Kevin.
[51:50] Speaker 2: No, But the technical things like how did tour work
[51:52] Speaker 2: for you guys? How did you like? I'm in my
[51:54] Speaker 2: contracts like yeah, is obviously like that was all worked
[51:57] Speaker 2: into our contract because High School Musical had had done that,
[52:00] Speaker 2: it could be a thing.
[52:01] Speaker 1: Well, come back and we have lots of really fun
[52:06] Speaker 1: musical reviews and shows and movies. We hope you guys
[52:11] Speaker 1: enjoyed this. Please let us know how we did.
