[0:01] Speaker 1: And that's what you really missed with Jenna.
[0:04] Speaker 2: And Kevin an iHeartRadio podcast. Welcome to and that's what
[0:10] Speaker 2: you really missed today we have I've been so excited
[0:14] Speaker 2: about this. We have an icon, a living legend, someone
[0:19] Speaker 2: who has shaped the very core of who we are.
[0:24] Speaker 2: D d Con frenschie from Greece and Greece too, among
[0:29] Speaker 2: a plethora of other stage and TV and film project
[0:35] Speaker 2: She has just had the most incredible career and she
[0:40] Speaker 2: is the kindest. I had a chance to meet her
[0:42] Speaker 2: in person in her life a couple months ago, and
[0:46] Speaker 2: so I was very much.
[0:47] Speaker 3: Looking forward to this conversation to actually get into the
[0:51] Speaker 3: grease of it all, because I was too scared to
[0:52] Speaker 3: ask her when I first met her. So, without further ado,
[0:55] Speaker 3: this is the icon de Dcon. Okay, did he thank
[1:00] Speaker 3: you so much for doing this?
[1:03] Speaker 1: Of course? Of course, my pleasure.
[1:05] Speaker 2: Oh my goodness. So obviously I met you a couple
[1:12] Speaker 2: a few weeks ago, two months ago. Whenever it was
[1:14] Speaker 2: because you and my boyfriend Austin did a movie together,
[1:18] Speaker 2: that's right, that I am very excited about. And every
[1:21] Speaker 2: day he would come back and just tell me how
[1:24] Speaker 2: obsessed he was with you.
[1:25] Speaker 1: Well, Austin is not only gorgeous, gorgeous.
[1:30] Speaker 2: He's not so bad.
[1:31] Speaker 1: Yeah, but he's he's such a sensitive, I mean, beautiful
[1:37] Speaker 1: inside and out person. And I mean he's a revelation,
[1:42] Speaker 1: that guy. This is like, all of a sudden you think, wow,
[1:46] Speaker 1: what a wonderful actor, so handsome, and then he sings
[1:50] Speaker 1: and then he composes, and he's just he's fabulous, beautiful man.
[1:57] Speaker 2: That is very sweet of you to say. I I
[2:00] Speaker 2: you know, I'm biased, so I agree. So on this
[2:03] Speaker 2: podcast today it's just me. But Jenna and I have
[2:06] Speaker 2: been watching musical some of our favorite musicals because we
[2:10] Speaker 2: watched all of Glee. We finished that and we're like, well,
[2:14] Speaker 2: let's keep watching musicals. And we wanted to go start
[2:16] Speaker 2: with things that we were obsessed with growing up that
[2:22] Speaker 2: you know, informed us, that made us who we are,
[2:25] Speaker 2: and obviously Greece is one of those things. We had
[2:30] Speaker 2: very Pearl on a couple of weeks ago.
[2:32] Speaker 1: Good, yeah, good, and.
[2:34] Speaker 2: Like, what a sweet sweet man. And his memory is crazy.
[2:39] Speaker 1: Oh I know, well he goes back to what bye
[2:42] Speaker 1: by no not by b Yes, yes, yes, Oliver, he
[2:47] Speaker 1: was in Oliver.
[2:48] Speaker 2: It was Yes. His career is absolutely insane, and you know,
[2:56] Speaker 2: having not to compare Glee to Greece, I'm not trying
[2:59] Speaker 2: to do that, but having a small taste of being
[3:03] Speaker 2: a part of something that changed our lives, that meant
[3:09] Speaker 2: so much to us as well as other people. And
[3:12] Speaker 2: I know how fun it was for us inside of
[3:15] Speaker 2: just making it. Even if nobody watched it, we had
[3:17] Speaker 2: the best time making it. And when we met briefly
[3:21] Speaker 2: a couple weeks ago, you like very quickly alluded to that,
[3:25] Speaker 2: and it has stuck with me, and so I wanted
[3:28] Speaker 2: to just talk to you about, like, how did this
[3:31] Speaker 2: journey happen for you? Where did How did Grease find you?
[3:35] Speaker 4: Oh?
[3:36] Speaker 1: How did Grease? Well? I was in la I had
[3:41] Speaker 1: already I had made the film You Light Up My Life,
[3:45] Speaker 1: and then I was also on a series with Danny Thomas,
[3:50] Speaker 1: and then I did a movie called Almost Summer, and
[3:54] Speaker 1: my agent said, they want to see you for a
[3:59] Speaker 1: Greece do you know a show? And I had seen it,
[4:01] Speaker 1: but I don't really remember it, you know, And then
[4:06] Speaker 1: they said, but you have to come looking like the part. Oh,
[4:10] Speaker 1: And I said, well, what's the part? She said, Well,
[4:13] Speaker 1: she wants to be she wants to go to beauty school.
[4:16] Speaker 1: She wants to drop out. Oh okay, So ever since
[4:20] Speaker 1: I can remember, I wanted to be in show busy.
[4:24] Speaker 1: You know, I was a dancer when I was younger.
[4:28] Speaker 1: Then I remember going to dancing school every Saturday with
[4:34] Speaker 1: my friend Paula. And then when we were about fifteen,
[4:38] Speaker 1: she stopped going. So we had to go from Brooklyn
[4:41] Speaker 1: to Manhattan and we had to get off of Bloomingdale's
[4:44] Speaker 1: and she just shopping getting boyfriends. And I said, hmm,
[4:50] Speaker 1: maybe if I stop dancing, I'll get boyfriends too. Well.
[4:54] Speaker 1: I was always acting. I was always making up acting,
[4:58] Speaker 1: making up stories, know, doing all the plays in high
[5:02] Speaker 1: school and all that stuff. Anyway, I could relate to
[5:05] Speaker 1: Frenchie's career drive that she wanted to go to beauty school.
[5:13] Speaker 1: And as as luck would have it, I went to
[5:17] Speaker 1: Western Costumes, got a fifties outfit, you know Western Costumes.
[5:21] Speaker 1: Every floor they have a different period of clothing, a
[5:25] Speaker 1: you know, a little outfit. And now this is really
[5:30] Speaker 1: I don't know, maybe the stars were aligned. I'm driving
[5:34] Speaker 1: home and I'm thinking, you know, I better get my
[5:36] Speaker 1: hair done. It's like this is not French. Have a
[5:40] Speaker 1: big do. Some reason, I ever thought about getting a wig.
[5:44] Speaker 1: But on the way home, I had been in La
[5:47] Speaker 1: that point four or five years, went a different way,
[5:52] Speaker 1: and what do I see Frenchie's beauty parlor?
[5:55] Speaker 2: Oh?
[5:57] Speaker 1: Yeah, So I went there and there was little friends,
[6:01] Speaker 1: she with a big hair. I didn't tell her because
[6:04] Speaker 1: I wanted to just talk to her about beauty school
[6:07] Speaker 1: and getting into the It was amazing, because.
[6:11] Speaker 2: Now that is crazy.
[6:14] Speaker 1: And she told me all these stories about how she
[6:17] Speaker 1: always wanted to be a beautician and all her dolls. Look,
[6:20] Speaker 1: the hair is a cut, all all this guy and
[6:25] Speaker 1: and what school was much more about not only color
[6:31] Speaker 1: and cuts, but psychology and etiquette. I mean, who know
[6:36] Speaker 1: these things? Then the next thing was to pick up
[6:41] Speaker 1: my script, and I went to Paramount to get it.
[6:45] Speaker 1: And you drive up to Paramount and hard and he
[6:49] Speaker 1: hands you, you say your name, hands you an envelope. Well,
[6:52] Speaker 1: this envelope was so skinny, and I said, wait a minute.
[6:57] Speaker 1: I looked and there was one page and it said
[7:00] Speaker 1: men are rats worse than that, So what does this
[7:02] Speaker 1: have to do with anything? And then I saw that
[7:05] Speaker 1: he had fatter envelopes on his desk, and I said,
[7:09] Speaker 1: excuse me, And any chance that that there's a whole
[7:12] Speaker 1: script in one of those. He said, pull over, pull over,
[7:16] Speaker 1: So I went pulled over, came up, and sure enough
[7:19] Speaker 1: he had one whole script. I had to go under
[7:22] Speaker 1: his desk and read up to that because I want
[7:27] Speaker 1: to know what happened before, you know, Yeah, well I
[7:31] Speaker 1: found out. I found out Rizzo was a better part.
[7:35] Speaker 1: But that was just you're looking looking with Fred. But
[7:41] Speaker 1: but then I saw what happened, that she had befriended
[7:44] Speaker 1: Sandy and you know, and that that he had, you know,
[7:49] Speaker 1: disappointed her. And so then I went to the audition
[7:53] Speaker 1: and I walked in and they just, I don't know,
[7:58] Speaker 1: they say that they I opened my mouth and I
[8:00] Speaker 1: got the part. I remember them sitting there. There was
[8:05] Speaker 1: a little office and Alan Carr and the casting agent
[8:08] Speaker 1: Joel Thurm, and the choreographer Pat and Randall Claisa director,
[8:14] Speaker 1: and they said, well, what do you think of the script? Script?
[8:17] Speaker 1: And I just told them the story I just told
[8:19] Speaker 1: you was the better part. They said no, no, And
[8:25] Speaker 1: actually at that point they hadn't found a Rizzle. They
[8:29] Speaker 1: wanted Lucy Arnez, but her mom wanted her to not
[8:33] Speaker 1: to do a screen test. They wanted her to do
[8:36] Speaker 1: a screen test and really, yeah, so that was But
[8:41] Speaker 1: then it was a regular audition, babe. We had to
[8:44] Speaker 1: come in there with like two hundred people, you know,
[8:49] Speaker 1: and learn the stroll a dance, which I also was
[8:53] Speaker 1: screwing up like crazy. And Kelly Ward, who ended up
[8:57] Speaker 1: playing Putsy, he said I would take a break because
[9:02] Speaker 1: they would have. We were in a sound stage and
[9:06] Speaker 1: hours of b were on a bleachers and I don't know,
[9:11] Speaker 1: I just every time everybody's going this way, I'm going
[9:13] Speaker 1: this way. And I asked him. I kept getting it wrong,
[9:19] Speaker 1: and I thought, well, that's the end of that. And
[9:21] Speaker 1: then they did something I didn't like. Honestly, kept down
[9:25] Speaker 1: and said, oh, you can go, you can go, you
[9:27] Speaker 1: can go.
[9:27] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[9:28] Speaker 1: I don't like that.
[9:29] Speaker 2: Yeah, I hate when that happens, but.
[9:31] Speaker 1: In front of each other. You come next day or
[9:34] Speaker 1: you know, I didn't like. Yeah, But then we you know,
[9:38] Speaker 1: later on we came back and they got us into
[9:41] Speaker 1: groups of you know, there were several groups of pink
[9:44] Speaker 1: ladies and tea birds. And then when they got it
[9:47] Speaker 1: down to the final ones, we didn't know where the
[9:49] Speaker 1: final ones. We just kept improvising and playing with each
[9:54] Speaker 1: other and wow, we had to sing Happy Birthday, I think,
[9:59] Speaker 1: but you know it's fun about I screwed up when
[10:04] Speaker 1: we were shooting the dance sequence right and they lining
[10:09] Speaker 1: us up for the shot and the camera was on
[10:13] Speaker 1: the stage looking out at all of us, and Pat
[10:16] Speaker 1: comes up to me. He said, remember what you did
[10:19] Speaker 1: at the audition. Everybody was going this way and you
[10:21] Speaker 1: were going that way. Said, well, you saw that. She
[10:24] Speaker 1: said do that, Mary, and I did that. Everybody's going
[10:30] Speaker 1: this way and we're going She wanted it to look real,
[10:33] Speaker 1: we're real kids, and she was brilliant. She got the dancers.
[10:38] Speaker 1: All of them were phenomenal, and they looked like real people,
[10:43] Speaker 1: but they were phenomenal, and each pair had a whole
[10:48] Speaker 1: autobiography who they were, and their names are on with
[10:52] Speaker 1: their character names area on the film too. Yes, really
[10:58] Speaker 1: she's the best.
[11:00] Speaker 2: I mean you can feel all of that. I think
[11:03] Speaker 2: having gone through like a casting process like that, you're
[11:06] Speaker 2: sort of, for lack of a better phrase, like trauma
[11:09] Speaker 2: bonded because you're all going through this and saying thing
[11:13] Speaker 2: where people are getting cut in front of you, wow,
[11:16] Speaker 2: And it's horrifying, Yeah, because you just feel like bad
[11:21] Speaker 2: for yourself if you're the one getting cut. You feel
[11:23] Speaker 2: bad that the other people that are getting cut in
[11:24] Speaker 2: front of you. It's a very surreal experience. But to
[11:28] Speaker 2: make it out of that, Yeah, and then you know
[11:32] Speaker 2: them saying that they knew you were Frenchy as soon
[11:34] Speaker 2: as you walked in the room. It's such a skill
[11:38] Speaker 2: that I don't think people necessarily think about from the
[11:41] Speaker 2: other side of the table when you're casting about looking
[11:46] Speaker 2: for those individualistic qualities of people that aren't necessarily written
[11:50] Speaker 2: on the page, right, and being able to like put
[11:53] Speaker 2: people together that seemingly somehow like fill out this puzzle. Yeah,
[11:58] Speaker 2: and you all sort of get along. And you know,
[12:02] Speaker 2: speaking of pat you just mentioned the choreography in this.
[12:07] Speaker 2: When you're watching something and you can take for granted, yeah,
[12:12] Speaker 2: something like the choreography, because it feels so obviously everyone
[12:17] Speaker 2: is so skilled and you're seeing like incredibly that clean
[12:20] Speaker 2: choreography and blocking and staging. But it only happens with
[12:25] Speaker 2: someone who has the ability to do that to make
[12:28] Speaker 2: it fit on everybody's bodies.
[12:30] Speaker 1: Yeah. Well she let everybody improvise and find their expression.
[12:36] Speaker 2: That's magical.
[12:38] Speaker 1: Yeah, she was really she's great, She's really Yeah, she's really,
[12:44] Speaker 1: really great.
[12:55] Speaker 2: You said that Rizzo was the better part, something that
[13:00] Speaker 2: Jenna and I both felt when we watched this a
[13:03] Speaker 2: couple of weeks ago. Was obviously as a kid growing up,
[13:08] Speaker 2: everybody loves Frenchy, like Frenchie is the most universally liked character.
[13:12] Speaker 2: I feel like that. But watching it now as an adult, yeah,
[13:18] Speaker 2: I think french she's the lead of this movie.
[13:22] Speaker 1: Wow. I'm so I don't know. I mean, I feel
[13:26] Speaker 1: so blessed because, you know, we had the license to
[13:33] Speaker 1: bring things to it, you know, like I'm always I
[13:38] Speaker 1: was always. I always had a calm. I was always
[13:40] Speaker 1: fixing everybody all the time, things that weren't in the script.
[13:44] Speaker 1: I wanted everybody to be the best. And Olivia was
[13:50] Speaker 1: very nervous, you know, because she had made a movie
[13:53] Speaker 1: before and she didn't like the way it came. So
[13:55] Speaker 1: she did a screen test with John and there was
[13:58] Speaker 1: instant chemistry. So she was happy about that. But her
[14:01] Speaker 1: first scene was walking onto the campus of Rydell with me,
[14:06] Speaker 1: Oh my god, and she was like, you know, all
[14:10] Speaker 1: over and I looked at her and I said, oh, Sandy,
[14:13] Speaker 1: I can't believe it. I've got a friend from Australia,
[14:19] Speaker 1: Sidney Austra tell me about us, and she looked at
[14:22] Speaker 1: me like this is in the script on what's going on?
[14:25] Speaker 1: But she caught on and she started telling me that
[14:28] Speaker 1: in high school she had to wear gloves and the
[14:31] Speaker 1: girls when the boys were set and she got right
[14:34] Speaker 1: into it. Yeah, Randall said action, we were right in,
[14:39] Speaker 1: you know, just walking on and she always thanked me
[14:42] Speaker 1: for that, but it was just because that's what we do,
[14:46] Speaker 1: you know, we just play.
[14:47] Speaker 2: And that seems zero percent surprising watching this movie and
[14:52] Speaker 2: you saying that it's like that is frenchy. Oh, like
[14:56] Speaker 2: I think like the connection between like Frenchie has relationship
[15:00] Speaker 2: chips with all of the characters. Like Frenchie is liked
[15:02] Speaker 2: by everybody in the film except.
[15:06] Speaker 1: From Saint Bernadette.
[15:08] Speaker 2: You'll like me, Yeah, nobody. That's different the people we
[15:16] Speaker 2: really care about, you know, but that makes so that's
[15:21] Speaker 2: so nice to hear because that makes so much sense
[15:23] Speaker 2: with your personality and the way, like Frenchie showed up
[15:28] Speaker 2: in every single scene.
[15:29] Speaker 1: But you know what, everybody was older than the characters.
[15:32] Speaker 1: So we actually happened that once we were in makeup,
[15:37] Speaker 1: I was we didn't call each other there by our
[15:40] Speaker 1: real names. We were in character, and that gave us
[15:43] Speaker 1: the license to be you know, horny and goofy and silly.
[15:46] Speaker 1: Yeah whatever.
[15:48] Speaker 2: I noticed you did that on the movie with Austin.
[15:50] Speaker 2: Is that something you have used like throughout your career.
[15:55] Speaker 1: I can't tell you how helpful that was on that film.
[16:00] Speaker 1: Actual nobody's because when we had so little time to
[16:05] Speaker 1: shoot and just coming onto a set where you're going
[16:11] Speaker 1: to be all day, all day and all night and
[16:14] Speaker 1: everybody calling me Joyce, it just kept me in Joyce. Yeah,
[16:22] Speaker 1: you know off oft times people that you know, I
[16:24] Speaker 1: love that movie or I love this set. I used
[16:27] Speaker 1: to watch Shining Timestation, or when guys come up to
[16:31] Speaker 1: me and say you were my first crush and that means,
[16:35] Speaker 1: you know, what will you do it to that? So
[16:42] Speaker 1: this way could just totally stay in a world that's
[16:47] Speaker 1: being created in that moment. Rehearsal, you know, really one
[16:53] Speaker 1: one rehearsal, one read through.
[16:55] Speaker 2: Yeah, so did that the you know calling you by
[16:59] Speaker 2: your character name? Was that the first time you had
[17:01] Speaker 2: done it on Greece?
[17:03] Speaker 1: Yes, oh yes, I'm doing I'm doing a series now
[17:09] Speaker 1: with called Best Medicine. Yes, semi regular thing, and I
[17:14] Speaker 1: wish everybody just called. You know, but what can they do,
[17:19] Speaker 1: you know when it's as everybody has to do it
[17:22] Speaker 1: or work. But I was so happy that Alex told
[17:26] Speaker 1: everybody for I even came to call me Joyce and
[17:29] Speaker 1: it was it just helped me sync in to just
[17:36] Speaker 1: the name. Even it was right, you.
[17:39] Speaker 2: Know, especially when you don't have time. It's like an
[17:41] Speaker 2: expedited way of just living that as much as you can,
[17:45] Speaker 2: you know, going.
[17:46] Speaker 1: Back to Greece. Something people don't realize with that, unlike Glee,
[17:51] Speaker 1: which is so many of the cast members were in
[17:54] Speaker 1: the Broadway show or in one of the national companies
[17:58] Speaker 1: playing it eight hundreds of time, so they not only
[18:01] Speaker 1: knew them, but they were greasy, you know, they swear.
[18:05] Speaker 1: In fact, Jamie Donnelley, who played jan she had played
[18:09] Speaker 1: that and when we were doing the sleepover scene, they
[18:16] Speaker 1: had Loretta Young. We were watching TV and there was
[18:19] Speaker 1: a Loretta Young show and she's coming down the staircase
[18:23] Speaker 1: and it's like, what, we wouldn't be watching this, you know,
[18:26] Speaker 1: that's not our style, you know, yeah, Jamie, and Jamie said,
[18:30] Speaker 1: you know, I pretended to be Bucky Beaver at one point,
[18:34] Speaker 1: got a big laugh. During lunch that day, they found
[18:37] Speaker 1: that Bucky Beaver commercial and that went on there. So
[18:41] Speaker 1: that came from her doing that show and knowing where
[18:44] Speaker 1: the jokes were.
[18:45] Speaker 4: You know.
[18:46] Speaker 2: Yeah, that makes such a big difference. We've watched other
[18:49] Speaker 2: things too, like and I think that applies to everything,
[18:52] Speaker 2: like especially if you're lucky enough to have people who
[18:54] Speaker 2: have been in the show yeh, to know all of
[18:56] Speaker 2: that stuff, and then you have a musical is tried
[19:00] Speaker 2: and true that has been worked out on stage. You
[19:02] Speaker 2: know the music is good, like you know where it fits,
[19:05] Speaker 2: you know, the story is good.
[19:07] Speaker 1: You know where it is in your body.
[19:09] Speaker 2: Yes, it's such a I think there's a really big
[19:11] Speaker 2: difference when you see musicals that have that coming into
[19:15] Speaker 2: it in musicals that don't have it, you can feel it.
[19:18] Speaker 1: And I think what, you know, it's what enhances the
[19:23] Speaker 1: you know, like Travalda never played Danny, but he played Duty.
[19:27] Speaker 1: He played you know, he knew the world and he
[19:30] Speaker 1: and he also Jeff Conaway was Danny and he saw
[19:35] Speaker 1: Jeff do it. I think he's so Richard Gear do it.
[19:37] Speaker 1: And of course you know he just took the original
[19:43] Speaker 1: guy who did it, very boss wick, you know, so
[19:45] Speaker 1: he just took the best of everybody, he'll see. Yeah,
[19:49] Speaker 1: and it just became his dan, which was so great
[19:54] Speaker 1: all of you.
[19:56] Speaker 2: I watched it with Austin, and Austin was like, it's
[20:00] Speaker 2: crazy how in every single frame of this movie, every
[20:03] Speaker 2: single actor is You can watch every like just one
[20:08] Speaker 2: actor in each scene and it's going to be so
[20:10] Speaker 2: good whether or not they have any lines or they're
[20:12] Speaker 2: the main focus, because everybody is so in it, in it.
[20:17] Speaker 2: The attention to detail, and then the sets themselves, every
[20:21] Speaker 2: single frame was so rich, Yeah, with material and with
[20:27] Speaker 2: the things of the time, the time period, and it's
[20:29] Speaker 2: like a visual feast to watch it where it's obviously
[20:33] Speaker 2: you know, like I know, for the songs and all
[20:35] Speaker 2: of your storylines and all of that, but when you
[20:37] Speaker 2: really step back and pick it apart, there's so much
[20:41] Speaker 2: depth to it.
[20:42] Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, it's true. But that was also pat you know,
[20:47] Speaker 1: assigning these partners and each one came up with you,
[20:52] Speaker 1: I said, a whole relationship, and it's you see it
[20:56] Speaker 1: in their dancing, if they liked each other, they didn't like, yeah,
[21:00] Speaker 1: arguing with each other or they you know, it was
[21:03] Speaker 1: everything had you know, was waight to it. Yes, yeah, No,
[21:09] Speaker 1: it's true. It's true.
[21:11] Speaker 2: So after that first scene with Olivia, how was the
[21:17] Speaker 2: experience of the rest of filming, because how long did
[21:19] Speaker 2: it take to film the movie?
[21:21] Speaker 1: Six weeks?
[21:22] Speaker 2: That feels very quick.
[21:25] Speaker 1: Yeah, two weeks rehearsal. You know, we did an interesting
[21:28] Speaker 1: thing right before principal photography began the day before in
[21:34] Speaker 1: a sound stage they did they set up bleachers and
[21:41] Speaker 1: picnic tables. For the opening number. They set up a
[21:45] Speaker 1: you know, a bedroom for my number set up I
[21:51] Speaker 1: mean beauty school and for Beauty School dropout they had steps. No,
[21:55] Speaker 1: actually we didn't do Beauty School drop because he didn't
[21:58] Speaker 1: come to that. But anyway, they up different big numbers,
[22:03] Speaker 1: especially Greece Lightning, and we performed it for for the
[22:08] Speaker 1: powers that be at Paramount and anybody else who was
[22:11] Speaker 1: around that day, performing it like you were on the stage,
[22:15] Speaker 1: and that really was great because we got that size
[22:20] Speaker 1: for us who had never done the show. We got
[22:24] Speaker 1: that in our you know, in our bodies. But you know,
[22:27] Speaker 1: Paramount they thought this is not going to do anything
[22:31] Speaker 1: because John was very it was a big star from Barberino,
[22:36] Speaker 1: but say Night Fever hadn't come out yet. He had
[22:39] Speaker 1: just made it. In fact, one day he said, you know, guys,
[22:43] Speaker 1: I did this movie and Brooklyn and would you like
[22:46] Speaker 1: to see it? You know, sure, So we went to
[22:50] Speaker 1: a screening room. He said, are you sure. You know,
[22:54] Speaker 1: I don't think it's gonna be much. He really had
[22:57] Speaker 1: no idea, and we saw that movie. Sho, this is
[23:02] Speaker 1: the most phenomenal theorem believing. And so when we got finished,
[23:08] Speaker 1: when we got to the scene of the carnival, everybody
[23:11] Speaker 1: wanted to do a sequel. You know. So when the
[23:14] Speaker 1: boys are throwing what are you pies and they miss,
[23:19] Speaker 1: he says, I'll see you in summer school. And that
[23:21] Speaker 1: was put in on the day to set equal and
[23:25] Speaker 1: we finished the film and their flowers would be a
[23:28] Speaker 1: param My said, no, this isn't going to do anything. No,
[23:31] Speaker 1: they pass. So of course, when My Fever came out
[23:35] Speaker 1: the film was such a success, then they wanted to
[23:37] Speaker 1: do it Grease too, but you know they were nobody
[23:41] Speaker 1: was available, and what I was available, I was I
[23:45] Speaker 1: was doing Benson then, so I was only available one week.
[23:49] Speaker 2: But oh wow, yeah, I know. I'm was like, we
[23:53] Speaker 2: watched Greece too. I was like, I want a whole
[23:55] Speaker 2: movie about Frenchie. I need a whole Frenchy movie. And
[23:58] Speaker 2: I'm not just saying that because of talking to you.
[24:00] Speaker 2: It was watching it. It was like frenchyat is sort
[24:06] Speaker 2: of like the Eyes and Ears. I feel like of
[24:08] Speaker 2: the viewer through that movie so relatable and the like
[24:17] Speaker 2: your like kindness really comes through and all of that,
[24:22] Speaker 2: and it just it seemed like all of you were actually,
[24:27] Speaker 2: you know, sort of falling in love with each other.
[24:30] Speaker 2: It's like, it seemed like.
[24:31] Speaker 1: It was a lot of real falling, a lot of
[24:36] Speaker 1: things going on, a lot of you know, those winnebagels
[24:39] Speaker 1: were rapping and rolling.
[24:40] Speaker 2: A lot happens. You're young, you're filming a movie, you know.
[24:45] Speaker 1: These things things happened.
[24:47] Speaker 2: I can't believe Paramount didn't. I feel like that happens
[24:51] Speaker 2: all the time when they never know what they have,
[24:54] Speaker 2: what they have, and then it just ends up being
[24:55] Speaker 2: the biggest grossing musical of all time last.
[24:59] Speaker 1: Year, making all that money. They don't know what they have.
[25:02] Speaker 1: When the DVD came out, they did a big press
[25:05] Speaker 1: for this international press pick came to Paramount. We had
[25:10] Speaker 1: we were on for over like almost two hours just
[25:15] Speaker 1: doing press. You know, people coming into the thing, and
[25:18] Speaker 1: Sherry Lansing looked at me, and she said, what the
[25:21] Speaker 1: I don't have first time movies with this kind of attention.
[25:25] Speaker 1: They like, they didn't know. And I had at that
[25:28] Speaker 1: time an idea for a way to make some have
[25:33] Speaker 1: grease give back, that we would all do this film
[25:37] Speaker 1: twenty years later and take faith, you know, whatever the
[25:41] Speaker 1: budget was for salaries, we'd take favored nations and our
[25:45] Speaker 1: money to our favorite charities. Yeah, you know, and I
[25:50] Speaker 1: had made this whole pitch we had anyway, So I
[25:54] Speaker 1: went up to Paramount and it looked like what's going
[25:56] Speaker 1: to happen? They hired writers, and then the writers didn't
[26:01] Speaker 1: listen because you know, I wrote a book for a
[26:04] Speaker 1: tenth of twenty then called a Frenchy Squeeze scrap Book,
[26:09] Speaker 1: which was a fundraiser for my son's school. Yeah, and
[26:13] Speaker 1: everybody told me what I said, what do you think
[26:15] Speaker 1: your character would be doing twenty years later? And I
[26:18] Speaker 1: got the greatest stories and I gave them to the writers.
[26:23] Speaker 1: They didn't want to use that. I don't know why
[26:24] Speaker 1: they didn't, And they came up with you know what
[26:28] Speaker 1: they came up with, and they saw a million dollar writers.
[26:33] Speaker 1: So I didn't play the game and let them go
[26:36] Speaker 1: on it just went on and on and on. I
[26:38] Speaker 1: just told the truth and then John and Olivia were
[26:41] Speaker 1: too busy, and yeah, a part, but I thought, you know, anyway,
[26:47] Speaker 1: I just thought we could do something. And now in
[26:50] Speaker 1: three years it's our fiftieth and we're going to do
[26:53] Speaker 1: a big fundraiser. Olivia has a cancer and wellness center.
[26:58] Speaker 2: Yeah, Barry was telling us about that.
[27:00] Speaker 1: Millions four and my son is living in a community
[27:04] Speaker 1: that's amazing for mostly for people who have very fragile
[27:10] Speaker 1: illnesses and wheelchairs and you know, twenty four to seven care.
[27:14] Speaker 1: But there is an autistic community as part of Center
[27:18] Speaker 1: for Discovery. It's called and now they're building a for
[27:23] Speaker 1: the future. It's called a I get so emotional thinking
[27:29] Speaker 1: about it. It's TLC Transitional Living Community for the Yeah
[27:37] Speaker 1: it's thirty three, you know, so it's for the future.
[27:41] Speaker 1: For the fiftieth big fundraising. But I'm seeing like something
[27:47] Speaker 1: really great, like having sleepovers, you know, people sponsoring sleepover contests,
[27:53] Speaker 1: you know, all kinds of So I'm beginning to coordinate
[27:58] Speaker 1: with Olivia's with with the Livy Newton John Cancer Wellness
[28:03] Speaker 1: Center and send a Discovery. And I spoke to John
[28:06] Speaker 1: about it once his foundation, in his son's honor to
[28:11] Speaker 1: be a part of it. So his three years is
[28:15] Speaker 1: it's gonna happen.
[28:16] Speaker 2: Very fast, and those things take a long time to coordinate.
[28:18] Speaker 2: But I think also the strength of you know, everything
[28:22] Speaker 2: that you guys created is that people will show up.
[28:25] Speaker 1: Yeah and fun. People love to dress up. They love
[28:29] Speaker 1: to do it. I mean, I hosted a Greece single
[28:32] Speaker 1: long in June eighteen thousand people and everybody dresses see
[28:37] Speaker 1: all this pink hairs and know the guys of the
[28:39] Speaker 1: slip back and everybody gets a prop bag and it's
[28:43] Speaker 1: and even John show it up.
[28:45] Speaker 2: That's amazing.
[28:56] Speaker 1: We have a visitor, my baby, Hi, Henny. I've been
[29:05] Speaker 1: talking to Alex. He's very happy, he's.
[29:09] Speaker 4: I've talked to him a couple of times. I'm so
[29:11] Speaker 4: excited to see you. What we made about you?
[29:16] Speaker 1: Yes, yes, you are the best, sweetie pie.
[29:21] Speaker 2: So good to.
[29:21] Speaker 1: See you you okay, oh yeah yeah now, but I
[29:28] Speaker 1: want to turn the tables and hear about you guys.
[29:31] Speaker 4: And.
[29:32] Speaker 2: You're much more interesting than us.
[29:34] Speaker 1: No, no, no, no, it's just been around longer. That's
[29:37] Speaker 1: but I just had a great, it's really very deep
[29:42] Speaker 1: experience on the film. I did. After our film, I
[29:47] Speaker 1: did a film called Little Man. And if there ever
[29:51] Speaker 1: was a gift to me to do this film, because
[29:54] Speaker 1: it's about Mark. Wohlberg plays a dad truck driver who
[30:00] Speaker 1: has a brilliant autistic son eleven years old, who has
[30:05] Speaker 1: lots of tics, lots of you, I can't do this,
[30:08] Speaker 1: can't do that, he can't hear this. And the father
[30:11] Speaker 1: just loves him, but he can't relate to him, and
[30:15] Speaker 1: so he takes more and more truck driving jobs and whatnot.
[30:21] Speaker 1: And his wife is Vera Farmiga's gorgeous. But anyway, the
[30:27] Speaker 1: movie is about how this father and son bond and
[30:32] Speaker 1: it's so beautiful. And the grandma, Mark's mother, he called mommy,
[30:38] Speaker 1: helped me mommy. Oh my god, he's called me mommy. Anyway,
[30:44] Speaker 1: it was, it was it was such a you know,
[30:49] Speaker 1: being a mother of an autistic child, a young man,
[30:53] Speaker 1: now you know, you you want it's hard, very hard
[31:01] Speaker 1: to communicate what you feel. It's very hard to be
[31:05] Speaker 1: with that person because if they're all over the place,
[31:09] Speaker 1: you have to have a certain huge amount of patience.
[31:12] Speaker 1: And you know, and I know my husband loves Danny
[31:16] Speaker 1: and it's just so hard for him. He's an intellectual.
[31:20] Speaker 1: He's you know, things that he reads he can't share
[31:23] Speaker 1: with Danny.
[31:24] Speaker 4: Know.
[31:25] Speaker 1: Well, in this movie they find a way to bond
[31:30] Speaker 1: through sports, through basketball actually, and I have one good
[31:37] Speaker 1: scene with the grandson where I tell him that that
[31:41] Speaker 1: my father must have been autistic but we didn't know
[31:45] Speaker 1: what it was, but how much I loved him, and
[31:48] Speaker 1: it's just was so like, wow, I guess so lucky
[31:51] Speaker 1: to get that part. So that to me was was
[31:55] Speaker 1: great A lot of gifts. Yeah, yeah, I was so
[32:00] Speaker 1: wonderful too. So we'll see. I don't know if it's
[32:04] Speaker 1: going to be on Apple or it's just produced by Apple.
[32:08] Speaker 2: That yeah, we're lucky to have you, because I feel
[32:12] Speaker 2: like I'm hoping people who listen to this interview too
[32:15] Speaker 2: can just like get your then they will like your
[32:18] Speaker 2: joy and your spirit and how like wonderful you are
[32:21] Speaker 2: to be around, and like how lucky that movie is
[32:24] Speaker 2: and that your guys movie is to be able to
[32:27] Speaker 2: have you.
[32:28] Speaker 1: And well we'll see, Austin, you.
[32:33] Speaker 4: Have this superpower where you bring out the best in people.
[32:36] Speaker 4: I think that's your greatest gift.
[32:38] Speaker 1: Oh oh, thank you, Well that was that's say that
[32:42] Speaker 1: that comes from old French old French.
[32:45] Speaker 2: No, that is that's like when we were watching it,
[32:49] Speaker 2: we're like, how did we not realize this as kids?
[32:53] Speaker 2: That like, Frenchie is the star of the best one.
[32:58] Speaker 2: She's the best one, She's the best of all.
[33:00] Speaker 1: Guys, I love you.
[33:02] Speaker 2: On Smoke And I think that's like after hearing what
[33:06] Speaker 2: what makes even more true? I think is hearing your
[33:08] Speaker 2: stories of how you got that part and then how
[33:12] Speaker 2: you were in that part. Yeah, yeah, himself to that
[33:16] Speaker 2: and seeing that on screen and you all do that
[33:21] Speaker 2: in your own way, but now knowing you for a
[33:23] Speaker 2: little bit a fraction of how Austin knows you, this
[33:26] Speaker 2: makes even more sense.
[33:27] Speaker 1: Oh my god.
[33:29] Speaker 4: I was going to ask you if they if Hollywood
[33:31] Speaker 4: decided to do a remake of Greece, who would you
[33:34] Speaker 4: want to see reprise the role of Frendsheet.
[33:38] Speaker 1: Oh? Well, what's the name? Car Carly Ray? She did
[33:44] Speaker 1: she played?
[33:45] Speaker 2: Actually did She did a great job.
[33:47] Speaker 1: Yeah, she did a great job. She's so sweet. We
[33:50] Speaker 1: both cried when we saw each other. I was like,
[33:52] Speaker 1: that's my daughter, that's my little thought I never had.
[33:57] Speaker 1: I love her so much.
[33:59] Speaker 2: I know if you've ever seen it, but gleeded a
[34:02] Speaker 2: lot of Greece. Yea, one of my favorite humans in
[34:05] Speaker 2: the world. Did the whole beauty school dropout number, and
[34:09] Speaker 2: she was and her name is Vanessa Lenngi's and you
[34:14] Speaker 2: two looks so similar.
[34:16] Speaker 1: Oh my god, I was.
[34:17] Speaker 2: Freaking all of us out. And then again watching Greece again,
[34:20] Speaker 2: I was like, that's been.
[34:22] Speaker 1: Oh how can I see that?
[34:26] Speaker 2: Yeah, it was the freakiest. It was like their faces
[34:30] Speaker 2: are the same, and her personality is so similar to yours.
[34:35] Speaker 1: Whow like both just like the warmest daughter out there.
[34:41] Speaker 2: Oh you absolutely, Like I think I would combust seeing
[34:45] Speaker 2: you two in the same room. There has to be
[34:46] Speaker 2: some like have you guys meet at some point?
[34:49] Speaker 1: All right, Well that's wonderful.
[34:50] Speaker 2: And I wish like, for our sake we got to
[34:53] Speaker 2: do even more Greece on the show because she was
[34:56] Speaker 2: Frenchy through like her character on the show was like
[35:00] Speaker 2: a mean version of Frenchie but eventually became Frenchie. But
[35:07] Speaker 2: I just have to I have to show it to you.
[35:09] Speaker 2: I'll send it to you after this so you can
[35:10] Speaker 2: see it.
[35:11] Speaker 1: But oh, I'd love to see it.
[35:13] Speaker 4: You know.
[35:13] Speaker 1: One of the things that at one point I was thinking,
[35:17] Speaker 1: you know, when when all these these shows were coming out,
[35:22] Speaker 1: you know, like you know, what do you call them?
[35:27] Speaker 1: The reality shows?
[35:28] Speaker 4: You know?
[35:29] Speaker 1: Oh? Yes, I thought to myself, well, the very first
[35:34] Speaker 1: makeover the show is Greece because she says, Frenchie, can
[35:38] Speaker 1: you help me? And we go and then she's transformed, right,
[35:44] Speaker 1: So I thought, well, how about that? How about how
[35:48] Speaker 1: Frenchie can you help me? And then the characters come
[35:52] Speaker 1: like like duty. I had this idea that duty comes
[35:55] Speaker 1: and out of the newspaper I found this is true
[35:59] Speaker 1: instant An Island. If you are a man and you
[36:03] Speaker 1: want to see what it's like to be a woman
[36:05] Speaker 1: for a night, you can go to this guy's house.
[36:08] Speaker 1: It was a whole article. I have the article. You
[36:10] Speaker 1: can go this guy's house in Staten Island and he
[36:13] Speaker 1: has up to size fifteen high heels, and he'll dress
[36:19] Speaker 1: you and you go to this bar and you have
[36:21] Speaker 1: a night as a woman. And I what off duty
[36:25] Speaker 1: comes to me? You know, he's like at my house,
[36:28] Speaker 1: I have wigs and I see him trying on a wig. Oh,
[36:32] Speaker 1: and I tell him about this place. So it would
[36:34] Speaker 1: be like fantasy of us characters, but the reality of
[36:40] Speaker 1: a guy who really does this kind of stuff.
[36:43] Speaker 4: I love this idea it'lliant.
[36:46] Speaker 1: And so I brought up to one of the producers
[36:48] Speaker 1: and he says, you don't want to do reality, but
[36:51] Speaker 1: I like this. It's fun, right, went down the toilet.
[36:59] Speaker 2: How do you think seeing all that? There's been so
[37:01] Speaker 2: many things with Greece, either you know, whether it's like
[37:04] Speaker 2: the musical, like stage show, or it's like when it
[37:08] Speaker 2: was done live with Carly ray Ye the Pink Lady's
[37:12] Speaker 2: TV show, Like how does it feel seeing all those
[37:14] Speaker 2: different iterations of Greece?
[37:17] Speaker 1: Well, oh, you know, I mean it's at the point
[37:22] Speaker 1: now in my life that it's really a blessing, you know,
[37:25] Speaker 1: It's really I really feel like, wow, this was a
[37:29] Speaker 1: blessing to do. To do that, to have it means
[37:33] Speaker 1: so much to so many beings. I mean, if I
[37:36] Speaker 1: was in like Psycho or something where I played like
[37:39] Speaker 1: killing people, see to like talk to you, but people
[37:47] Speaker 1: that makes them happy, grease. You know, everybody has a
[37:50] Speaker 1: story they were dressed up as this, but they did
[37:53] Speaker 1: this in school. So it's definitely a blessing. And it's
[37:58] Speaker 1: I've had experiences because of it, like doing an ice
[38:02] Speaker 1: skating show England and meeting these friends that I made.
[38:07] Speaker 1: I mean so scared to ice skate. But I had
[38:10] Speaker 1: the greatest partner in Lukash, like he was it just that.
[38:16] Speaker 1: So I've had so many really wonderful experiences because of it.
[38:22] Speaker 1: We're talking because of it.
[38:25] Speaker 2: It's so surreal, like it was such a Greece has
[38:29] Speaker 2: always been a part of my life, Like that was
[38:32] Speaker 2: my way into musicals really, Oh yeah, absolutely, because it
[38:38] Speaker 2: didn't feel like a standard musical, Like I wasn't someone
[38:42] Speaker 2: who had really access to like go to the theater
[38:44] Speaker 2: or anything like that.
[38:46] Speaker 1: I grow up where, oh.
[38:49] Speaker 2: My mom was obsessed with Greece, and so I became
[38:52] Speaker 2: obsessed with Greece and I had that that soundtrack memorized
[38:56] Speaker 2: front to back. I watched the movie all the time.
[39:01] Speaker 2: Texas outside of Dallas.
[39:04] Speaker 1: Because we go to We've gone to San Antonio a
[39:06] Speaker 1: few times for autograph signing. We'll got big turnout.
[39:09] Speaker 2: I've never been to San Antonio.
[39:11] Speaker 1: Oh yes, I've never.
[39:13] Speaker 2: Yeah, I still need to. But yeah, I don't think
[39:16] Speaker 2: there would have been Glee without Grease. That's one of
[39:19] Speaker 2: those maybe.
[39:20] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[39:21] Speaker 2: Fully, I think it was a way to make it
[39:24] Speaker 2: accessible to like a new generation of you know, there
[39:30] Speaker 2: were sort of like pre Grease musicals. I think we're
[39:33] Speaker 2: a bit more Rogers and Hammer Sign are unapproachable.
[39:37] Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah.
[39:38] Speaker 2: Because all the all your characters were so real and
[39:44] Speaker 2: fun and not perfect. They were all imperfect in their
[39:46] Speaker 2: own way. And also these songs individually, on top of
[39:50] Speaker 2: a great story were hits. Hits. Yeah, you listen to
[39:54] Speaker 2: that soundtracks like, oh, this sounds like the greatest hits album.
[39:57] Speaker 1: Yeah, well that's because of Olivia is a guy who
[40:00] Speaker 1: wrote John Farah, who wrote You're the one that I
[40:03] Speaker 1: Want and hopelessly devoted.
[40:05] Speaker 2: And oh I was so we did we did You're
[40:08] Speaker 2: the One that I Want on Glee. I was in
[40:11] Speaker 2: it and I got sent photos they filmed at the
[40:14] Speaker 2: school you guys filmed at really, yes, and they were
