[0:01] Speaker 1: And That's what You Really Missed with Jenna.
[0:04] Speaker 2: And Kevin an iHeartRadio podcast.
[0:09] Speaker 1: Welcome to and That's What You Really miss Podcast.
[0:14] Speaker 2: Today is a very special day because we have one
[0:16] Speaker 2: of our friends, a very talented singer and actor and
[0:21] Speaker 2: whose song, as we were friends during the show, ended
[0:25] Speaker 2: up in one of the episodes, which was very surreal
[0:28] Speaker 2: and really really cool. And it's Betty who.
[0:32] Speaker 1: You know, Betty, Betty who freaking who?
[0:34] Speaker 2: And it's used in a really pivotal moment.
[0:36] Speaker 3: In the series Huge, which is coming. It's just so
[0:41] Speaker 3: much fun. It was fun. We've been friends with Betty
[0:43] Speaker 3: and then and you even more like her. Told Betty,
[0:47] Speaker 3: I think that the song was happening or whatever.
[0:51] Speaker 2: I don't know.
[0:51] Speaker 1: We'll find out in this conversation. But she's great and
[0:55] Speaker 1: we love her.
[0:56] Speaker 2: Betty, who is so much fun that like for her birthdays,
[0:59] Speaker 2: she used to have Brittany Parks and Hannah teach us
[1:04] Speaker 2: Beyonce dance routines amazing and so like it's her birthday.
[1:08] Speaker 2: But what a treat for us, I mean a gift, yeah,
[1:11] Speaker 2: a true gift for us. But this is our talk
[1:15] Speaker 2: with Betty. It could have gone on for eight hours
[1:18] Speaker 2: because we just get to Gavin, you know, but she's
[1:22] Speaker 2: so talented and can do anything and everything, and so
[1:25] Speaker 2: we get into it all. So here is Betty who
[1:29] Speaker 2: or or or oh my god, how you going?
[1:42] Speaker 4: Hey Jenny? Literally where you been?
[1:52] Speaker 2: Or she's birth children?
[1:55] Speaker 4: I know you have and you're always thoughted on that trampoline.
[1:58] Speaker 4: That's what. That's what you said.
[2:00] Speaker 1: It out with me, bouncin haven't babies. That's it.
[2:05] Speaker 2: You look younger than when I met you.
[2:07] Speaker 1: You're aging backwards?
[2:08] Speaker 2: Yeah, what have you done? What have you got me?
[2:13] Speaker 4: I can tell you what I've done, which is I'm
[2:16] Speaker 4: truly shocked that you said that, because you know us
[2:18] Speaker 4: white women, I think we actually tend to age the worst.
[2:22] Speaker 2: Yes, anybody?
[2:23] Speaker 4: Yeah, so yeah, just curdling over time. My theory is
[2:30] Speaker 4: that it is hair theory because I was a short,
[2:32] Speaker 4: short haired girl for a long time, and I think
[2:36] Speaker 4: that I don't really know where I'm headed. I've just
[2:38] Speaker 4: been like trying to do I think I'm in a
[2:41] Speaker 4: period of my life which is very in the definition
[2:44] Speaker 4: of insanity is doing the same thing over and over
[2:46] Speaker 4: again and expecting different results. And so like, the hair
[2:50] Speaker 4: was very like in my head was like this is
[2:52] Speaker 4: what I have to do. People know me this, this,
[2:54] Speaker 4: and now I'm like, oh, can I do whatever I want?
[2:58] Speaker 4: I think I can't. Yeah, And the longer my hair gets,
[3:02] Speaker 4: I think the like stinkier and littler. I look, I
[3:05] Speaker 4: think I look like. I think I look like ten
[3:07] Speaker 4: year old me. Do you know what I mean? In
[3:08] Speaker 4: a way that's not like I'm just like a stinky
[3:12] Speaker 4: little girl.
[3:14] Speaker 3: You know, Kevin's the jammiest kid in town, so we've
[3:17] Speaker 3: got to.
[3:17] Speaker 2: Sink the jammiest kid in town.
[3:20] Speaker 4: Okay, speaking of why I haven't seen Aristotle.
[3:25] Speaker 2: Look, you got in the effort, you gotta. I have
[3:29] Speaker 2: to go find him. I'm like, where are you? I'm coming.
[3:32] Speaker 4: I might go ill. Okay that's good.
[3:34] Speaker 2: Yeah like that because I was doing the same thing.
[3:39] Speaker 2: I'm like, babies.
[3:41] Speaker 4: Your all of your good will that you use on
[3:44] Speaker 4: trying to find Kelly is going to being patient with
[3:47] Speaker 4: your patient.
[3:48] Speaker 2: Yes, that's what you have a partnership. I can see
[3:51] Speaker 2: Kelly on your behalf.
[3:53] Speaker 1: Yes, and yeah, I'll try to stay patient.
[3:55] Speaker 2: Okay, you won't be the warehouse parties at three a m.
[3:58] Speaker 2: You know I can do that for you.
[4:00] Speaker 1: Thank you.
[4:01] Speaker 4: Wow, I can't actually it's so funny. I make so
[4:04] Speaker 4: much music and like so much of my culture is
[4:06] Speaker 4: like I love to dance, but I'm also tired.
[4:10] Speaker 5: And old and so like in like wiggling girlfriend, I
[4:15] Speaker 5: am trying to hit like a Sunday afternoon, four pm
[4:19] Speaker 5: on Santa Monica Boulevard.
[4:21] Speaker 4: You you text me at ten thirty saying where are
[4:24] Speaker 4: we going? I say to bed.
[4:25] Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm sleep. I don't listen. I don't know how
[4:30] Speaker 2: these gays do it, because I went to my first
[4:34] Speaker 2: warehouse party, like a couple of months ago, a warehouse yeah,
[4:40] Speaker 2: and I'm like I need to see what this is like.
[4:43] Speaker 2: And I'm looking around. I'm like, I am exhausted.
[4:46] Speaker 4: I'm tired.
[4:47] Speaker 2: I'm the only one.
[4:50] Speaker 4: That's the other thing, right.
[4:51] Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't love.
[4:52] Speaker 4: I don't love a drug. No, marijuana is my spiritual
[4:56] Speaker 4: that's my that's my medicine.
[4:58] Speaker 2: But that's what you want to in a dark room.
[5:00] Speaker 4: You know it's not And everybody else is having a
[5:03] Speaker 4: different time. And for me, I just get like, I
[5:05] Speaker 4: get hot, I get I get nervous. All of a sudden,
[5:07] Speaker 4: I'm like, I'm going to die and I'm going to
[5:09] Speaker 4: be here. This is where I want to die a
[5:12] Speaker 4: warehouse downtown at four in the morning.
[5:15] Speaker 1: No, the I gotta go.
[5:18] Speaker 4: I don know how they do it.
[5:20] Speaker 2: I don't know. I do not know how they do it.
[5:23] Speaker 4: What are we even talking about.
[5:25] Speaker 3: I don't know people, well, speaking of speaking of, I
[5:27] Speaker 3: don't know how they do it. You congratulations, you made
[5:30] Speaker 3: your Broadway debut.
[5:34] Speaker 4: Pivot.
[5:35] Speaker 2: Yes, you know, one of us is job.
[5:39] Speaker 1: Keep it on track.
[5:40] Speaker 3: Okay, but I love it because I obviously that's.
[5:45] Speaker 1: That's my whole feed. My Instagram feed is Broadway.
[5:47] Speaker 3: So I'm just seeing like you hopping up on my
[5:51] Speaker 3: Broadway feed, like all my worlds are colliding.
[5:54] Speaker 2: But you got which was shocking. I was like, wait
[5:58] Speaker 2: what but also makes a lot of sense. Yeah, it
[6:02] Speaker 2: was shocking. How did like how the hell?
[6:05] Speaker 6: Yeah?
[6:08] Speaker 4: That is such a great question. You know. I want
[6:11] Speaker 4: to say that the casting director saw my New York
[6:14] Speaker 4: headlining show when I came through on the big.
[6:16] Speaker 2: Tour, and you can say headlining.
[6:19] Speaker 4: My headlining shore and I want to say that it
[6:24] Speaker 4: was just I I got a call from my agent
[6:28] Speaker 4: and he was like, I got something crazy to tell
[6:31] Speaker 4: you about. And I was like okay, and like, my
[6:35] Speaker 4: you know, listen, I've been an independent artist. You know,
[6:39] Speaker 4: it's like I I my bar when someone tells like
[6:44] Speaker 4: I used to be like, if someone on my team
[6:46] Speaker 4: is like I had exciting news, I was like, oh
[6:47] Speaker 4: my god, my song has gone number one at radio
[6:50] Speaker 4: overnight and all of my dreams have come true and
[6:53] Speaker 4: I have one billion fans. When did I can't believe
[6:55] Speaker 4: that you've called to tell me this, right? And then
[6:58] Speaker 4: they call and they're like, well, I'm going to pay
[7:01] Speaker 4: you twenty five dollars to post seventeen posts on your Instagram?
[7:04] Speaker 4: Does that sound good? And I'm like totally, totally, thank
[7:07] Speaker 4: you so much for the opportunity.
[7:09] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[7:09] Speaker 4: So when my agent called and was like I have
[7:11] Speaker 4: something really crazy, I was like, Okay, they're going to
[7:14] Speaker 4: want me to do like, you know, a song for
[7:17] Speaker 4: free in Times Square for theing or whatever, and like
[7:20] Speaker 4: I'm down for the cause, you know what I mean.
[7:21] Speaker 4: It's like I wanted to be in theater. I want
[7:23] Speaker 4: to be in the world. I've been taking meetings, my
[7:25] Speaker 4: finger guns have been out for a while in their community.
[7:28] Speaker 2: Yeah, so this is something you were searching for.
[7:31] Speaker 4: Yes, yes, I actually, to be honest, I was searching
[7:34] Speaker 4: for opportunities to write in musical theater even more than
[7:37] Speaker 4: I was to perform. I just like, I'm so unusual
[7:41] Speaker 4: and I feel as though it is really hard for
[7:46] Speaker 4: me to find opportunities to perform outside of ones I
[7:48] Speaker 4: create for myself because I'm six to two and I
[7:51] Speaker 4: like don't fit in a like very easy box. Actually,
[7:54] Speaker 4: speaking of auditioning, have we discussed the fact that Glee
[7:57] Speaker 4: came to my high school and auditioned kids at my
[8:00] Speaker 4: high school and I sang True Colors, Jenna, I'm sure
[8:03] Speaker 4: you're familiar. I know that you're goin. I sang your
[8:07] Speaker 4: version of True Colors as my audition for And by
[8:11] Speaker 4: the way, you know what I've said, which is so funny.
[8:13] Speaker 4: Me a little bisexual six sixteen year old seventeen year old,
[8:16] Speaker 4: I was like, I think you need more lesbians in
[8:18] Speaker 4: the show, and I think I would do great at that.
[8:19] Speaker 4: It's literally what I my pitch, which is so funny
[8:22] Speaker 4: because then the entire show since I said that, like
[8:24] Speaker 4: pivoted to really be mostly about lesbians actually, And I
[8:27] Speaker 4: was like, Okay, well you didn't need more representation you
[8:29] Speaker 4: did find just on your own. But yeah, I mean
[8:32] Speaker 4: little high school or in high school, I don't think
[8:36] Speaker 4: I ever have revealed. I've waited for this moment to
[8:38] Speaker 4: tell you about it.
[8:39] Speaker 2: What you told me about the NLT fandom, but you
[8:41] Speaker 2: never told me about this.
[8:42] Speaker 4: I am NLT is number one fan the way that
[8:45] Speaker 4: I ride for I listened to NLT a lot, and
[8:48] Speaker 4: I'm not even embarrassed to say it. I shouldn't be.
[8:49] Speaker 4: The songs are great. You're you're out here then about
[8:53] Speaker 4: this is good? You didn't.
[8:59] Speaker 2: This is how we became friends initially too. At Sophia
[9:03] Speaker 2: Bush's house, myself was on here a couple of months ago,
[9:06] Speaker 2: and Benny looks at me and starts singing an NLT song,
[9:11] Speaker 2: and I was like, who don't know, because I'm like,
[9:16] Speaker 2: I'm in a safe space. I'm like at a friend's house,
[9:20] Speaker 2: so this person.
[9:20] Speaker 4: ISID, yeah, no, And I'm like, giving fan energy this
[9:25] Speaker 4: is so difficult. And this is something that I actually
[9:27] Speaker 4: learned a lot about this time of my life when
[9:29] Speaker 4: I met you, guys. Is it's like trying to figure
[9:32] Speaker 4: out how to I think ultimately I have fan energy,
[9:35] Speaker 4: but not in a spooky way, not like I want.
[9:38] Speaker 2: That's why I recognized that. I was like right away,
[9:43] Speaker 2: I ran towards you.
[9:44] Speaker 4: Yeah, I ran into my arms. Yes, I did feel
[9:48] Speaker 4: very much as I moved to LA that I spent
[9:51] Speaker 4: a lot of time being like, oh my god, I'm
[9:53] Speaker 4: obsessed with the thing that you do and people are
[9:54] Speaker 4: like whoa, and I'm just like, oh, oh no, I'm
[9:58] Speaker 4: so sorry. Do you want me to ignore you? And
[10:00] Speaker 4: I've never heard of you before? I guess yeah, that is.
[10:03] Speaker 4: And then I like moved off of my my fan line,
[10:08] Speaker 4: and now I've circled back to being like, well, I
[10:09] Speaker 4: think I have to be myself. That's what everybody says,
[10:12] Speaker 4: that's apparently what I'm supposed to do. And so now
[10:15] Speaker 4: I'm just like I lead with this is my other trick.
[10:19] Speaker 4: This is my this is my networking, this is my
[10:21] Speaker 4: I'm thirty something trick and in the viz for a decade. Yes,
[10:25] Speaker 4: I don't do any of the Hey so great to
[10:26] Speaker 4: see you and have someone look at me and go
[10:28] Speaker 4: I go, hey, it's me Betty Who. That's what I do.
[10:31] Speaker 4: I walk into a situation I meeting somebody or re
[10:34] Speaker 4: meeting someone, I go hey, it's me Betty Who, and
[10:37] Speaker 4: they go okay, and I'm like, oh my god, I
[10:39] Speaker 4: loved you in this thing. And then they're like, that
[10:40] Speaker 4: was Betty Who, even if I remembered or didn't remember,
[10:43] Speaker 4: instead of being like hey, and then wait for them
[10:44] Speaker 4: to be like, I'm so sorry, can you tell me
[10:47] Speaker 4: you're hey, it's me Betty Who. And then when I
[10:49] Speaker 4: introduced myself, then they go and I go, I'm so sorry.
[10:51] Speaker 4: I can you tell me your name? And I've been
[10:53] Speaker 4: generous in offering mine and now it's reciprocal. It's really
[10:56] Speaker 4: working wonders for me. It's shifted.
[10:58] Speaker 2: It's a great mood move.
[11:01] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[11:02] Speaker 1: Yeah, it just opens the door you don't have.
[11:05] Speaker 4: You don't have the fan of NLT.
[11:08] Speaker 3: I'm going to do that from now on. I'm just
[11:09] Speaker 3: gonna say, hey, it's me Abody whom away.
[11:12] Speaker 4: That is the way.
[11:21] Speaker 2: The audition for Glee, he said you were searching for
[11:23] Speaker 2: theater opportunities. Were you a musical theater girly?
[11:29] Speaker 4: Yeah? Yeah, yeah, yeah, very much of course.
[11:32] Speaker 3: And was it a big deal that they came to
[11:33] Speaker 3: school for your school, like with everybody freaking of course?
[11:37] Speaker 4: And I remember Shelby the Girl Who, because it was
[11:40] Speaker 4: like a competition and it's like you won, and if
[11:42] Speaker 4: you won the competition at your school, then you went
[11:44] Speaker 4: into like a smaller pool of like the other schools.
[11:48] Speaker 4: Do you know what I mean? I was a cellist
[11:51] Speaker 4: at Interlock and I was not a singer, so I
[11:52] Speaker 4: auditioned as a vocalist, but it's not something I'd ever
[11:55] Speaker 4: had any like training or experience.
[11:57] Speaker 2: Really, so rude, that's so rude.
[12:00] Speaker 1: Every time I guess on we have like we find
[12:02] Speaker 1: another hyphen.
[12:04] Speaker 2: No, that is so rude. How good you have to be?
[12:07] Speaker 2: Like you don't even like I'm not even a singer
[12:10] Speaker 2: and then you just had a career as a singer
[12:14] Speaker 2: playing out.
[12:15] Speaker 1: This cello on tour.
[12:17] Speaker 4: You know, that's the question. It's so funny. That's something
[12:19] Speaker 4: that I struggled with a lot. I think because my
[12:22] Speaker 4: in my head and it's all my mental illness for
[12:24] Speaker 4: no reason other than like mental illness in it right.
[12:27] Speaker 2: We all stop ourselves from doing we probably should be doing.
[12:30] Speaker 4: Hundred percent, Like my biggest song being a cover being
[12:34] Speaker 4: I Love You Always Forever by Donna Lewis, and me
[12:36] Speaker 4: being like I'm never making a cover again, like I
[12:38] Speaker 4: wish it was my music. It's like I should have
[12:39] Speaker 4: made four albums of covers. It's probably but the person
[12:44] Speaker 4: that I identify myself as as a cellist was very like
[12:49] Speaker 4: in the wrong place. It's sort of like I was
[12:51] Speaker 4: this big personality and I like didn't know how to
[12:54] Speaker 4: work out at cello because all of the other people
[12:56] Speaker 4: I looked around at wanted it so bad and I
[12:59] Speaker 4: loved the cello, but I didn't want to practice eight
[13:02] Speaker 4: hours a day so I could make it into an orchestra,
[13:04] Speaker 4: so I could like be a serious, buttoned up person
[13:06] Speaker 4: who like played classical music all the time. And I
[13:09] Speaker 4: love classical music, and I've come so full circle to
[13:14] Speaker 4: like loving that pot of myself and my history in it.
[13:17] Speaker 4: But I think when I was starting Betty Who, it
[13:19] Speaker 4: was actually such a like pensul and swing away from
[13:22] Speaker 4: the thing I've been doing for like because it's like
[13:24] Speaker 4: I wasn't professional because I wasn't being paid for it.
[13:26] Speaker 4: I was paying an enormous amount to study this thing,
[13:31] Speaker 4: but like I was playing cello four to six hours
[13:33] Speaker 4: a day. It's like hogwarts for music, you know what
[13:35] Speaker 4: I mean. It's like I remember the feeling of being
[13:37] Speaker 4: like this is as close to doing this full time
[13:40] Speaker 4: as I will probably ever get because I have realized
[13:43] Speaker 4: that I don't have the you have to like want
[13:46] Speaker 4: it you have to have the drive. And like there
[13:48] Speaker 4: are these girls from Korea whose families are sacrificing everything
[13:53] Speaker 4: so they can come to interlock in and practice every
[13:56] Speaker 4: minute of the day. And I was like, hey, I
[13:58] Speaker 4: love that for you. You got it like callouses that
[14:02] Speaker 4: like came out of their fingers from practicing every day.
[14:05] Speaker 4: And I'm like, WHOA couldn't be me. I'm like, you know,
[14:07] Speaker 4: trying to like make friends and like write songs in
[14:09] Speaker 4: the basement while everybody else is like playing playing classical music.
[14:13] Speaker 4: So I think when I think about using cello, I
[14:16] Speaker 4: was like started to dip aitew. It's been very very
[14:21] Speaker 4: rgus and slow getting me here. But like on my
[14:24] Speaker 4: lost record, the last song on the album is called
[14:26] Speaker 4: grown Up scirl Pot, and I'm playing the guitar and
[14:29] Speaker 4: the piano and the cello in that song in that piece,
[14:34] Speaker 4: and like playing cello on a song for my record
[14:38] Speaker 4: was like felt like a huge stele. But it was
[14:40] Speaker 4: so funny. Just the producer, who I've known for so long,
[14:42] Speaker 4: SAME's Martin Martin Johnson, was producing this record and he
[14:45] Speaker 4: was what, I pulled my cello out, I'd like brought
[14:47] Speaker 4: it to we like I drove to Utah and I
[14:50] Speaker 4: like made this record in Utah with him, and I
[14:52] Speaker 4: brought my cello in the backseat of my jeep and
[14:54] Speaker 4: I like sat down with my cello to play on
[14:56] Speaker 4: this number, and he was like, whoa, I am looking
[15:00] Speaker 4: at twelve year old you whoah. It's like the second
[15:03] Speaker 4: I'm sitting with a cello, I am instantly the ten
[15:06] Speaker 4: year old you know playing it. So I think that
[15:09] Speaker 4: now I'm ready to accept that as being really beautiful.
[15:12] Speaker 4: But I think when you're like a young twenty something,
[15:14] Speaker 4: you're like, noah, different, it.
[15:16] Speaker 2: Would reject everything from that time. It's just yeah yeah.
[15:21] Speaker 4: And then like a cello, I think of like cello
[15:23] Speaker 4: as being like the sexy you know the Bond girls.
[15:25] Speaker 4: You remember girls who were like they wore short skirts
[15:28] Speaker 4: and they had the electric instruments and they their hair
[15:31] Speaker 4: and they were playing you know, movie music. Yeah, that's
[15:34] Speaker 4: like that's the kind of cellis that. Now I'm like, oh,
[15:37] Speaker 4: I could do that.
[15:38] Speaker 2: Yes, I want to see Betty Who tour.
[15:43] Speaker 4: Yes, yeah, who knows? Who knows it will be on
[15:47] Speaker 4: this one, but it might it might before maybe when
[15:49] Speaker 4: I age out of dancing with my knees can't take
[15:51] Speaker 4: it anymore. That's when the cello will really come back
[15:53] Speaker 4: into play.
[15:54] Speaker 2: Another thing that you can just do really well. And
[15:56] Speaker 2: the Betty Who experience is great.
[15:58] Speaker 4: If anyone who's I'm going on tour the summer, I
[16:02] Speaker 4: hope I'll see you there. Yes, you too. It is
[16:05] Speaker 4: mostly the royal you, but also mostly you too.
[16:08] Speaker 1: Specific Okay, out of the out of the Darkness tour.
[16:10] Speaker 4: Yeah, Jenna's Jenna's getting a sitter and she'll be there.
[16:14] Speaker 1: Yes, I'm getting a sitter and I will.
[16:15] Speaker 2: I've been your backup answer before you have.
[16:18] Speaker 4: You have your inner somebody loves you a music video.
[16:20] Speaker 2: That's right.
[16:21] Speaker 1: Well, speaking up, I had another transition.
[16:24] Speaker 2: Hello, oh no, we can't go there yet. We need
[16:26] Speaker 2: to finish Haites Town. Oh my god, I need to
[16:31] Speaker 2: know how this happened. So we got a call.
[16:33] Speaker 1: We got a call for something.
[16:34] Speaker 4: We really got a call and my yes and the
[16:36] Speaker 4: and the bar was on the floor for me. I
[16:38] Speaker 4: was like thinking that they were going to get me
[16:39] Speaker 4: to like, you know, introduce I don't know, uh don
[16:42] Speaker 4: a Mentelle somewhere or something. And my agent was like,
[16:47] Speaker 4: we have an offer for you to play for Sephonie
[16:48] Speaker 4: and Hadestown come.
[16:50] Speaker 2: On, offer, I said, did you say offer? Yeah, somebody
[16:54] Speaker 2: wants me?
[16:55] Speaker 4: What is me? It's me? Yeah? Yeah, So I think
[17:02] Speaker 4: I felt it was like Cloud nine. You know, there
[17:06] Speaker 4: are moments like I know you both know you look
[17:10] Speaker 4: so hot, so hot, and then you're like, what was
[17:16] Speaker 4: it all for? And the question remains a lot of
[17:19] Speaker 4: the time, and then like for no reason. Maybe it's
[17:23] Speaker 4: because of all that hard work, or maybe it's like
[17:26] Speaker 4: some random person thought of you and it just was
[17:29] Speaker 4: you were lucky as hell and that phone that phone call,
[17:35] Speaker 4: it accumulates, and that that phone call was one of
[17:37] Speaker 4: them where I'm like, I didn't even ask for this
[17:40] Speaker 4: and it's just gonna happen. This doesn't feel fair.
[17:42] Speaker 2: Yeah, no, it is fair because I have seen you
[17:46] Speaker 2: grind and work for so long and like it's not
[17:51] Speaker 2: easy being an independent artist, and like every vision you
[17:55] Speaker 2: do it all like since you're like before your first album, and.
[18:01] Speaker 4: Well, I know, I really have known you guys for
[18:04] Speaker 4: so long.
[18:04] Speaker 2: So long, sorrow long.
[18:07] Speaker 4: It's really crazy. I do think about that because I
[18:10] Speaker 4: also feel like I am a manifestor in a lot
[18:14] Speaker 4: of ways about like the first famouses that I met
[18:17] Speaker 4: in Los Angeles when I came out here and I
[18:19] Speaker 4: remember being such I was like a gleek, a bit
[18:22] Speaker 4: huge gleek. And also John Talker Musta is one of
[18:25] Speaker 4: my favorite childhood movies and Bush was like one of
[18:27] Speaker 4: my gay awakenings in that movie because she's like, I'm
[18:29] Speaker 4: going to kiss you, and I was like, why do
[18:31] Speaker 4: I have to pee? Do you know what I mean?
[18:33] Speaker 2: Because she has the most perfect face known demand that.
[18:37] Speaker 4: I'm speaking of aging backwards. She is not Kardling.
[18:39] Speaker 2: I don't know. I don't know what is in her genes,
[18:43] Speaker 2: but good god, I know, so to like.
[18:46] Speaker 4: Go to one of my first being like invited to
[18:48] Speaker 4: my first like social thing in La and it was
[18:51] Speaker 4: like you guys and Sophia Bush. I was like, I
[18:53] Speaker 4: think I did this. I think that I think my
[18:57] Speaker 4: vision ward speaking of my vision board. You know what else?
[19:00] Speaker 4: One of my favorite momes from Glee is safety Dance
[19:03] Speaker 4: because Kevin McHale speaking of another thing that you're so
[19:05] Speaker 4: amazing at is also dancing, and you did not get
[19:08] Speaker 4: to do enough of it. I'm seeing you wheel around
[19:10] Speaker 4: in this chair, moving your upper body like your life
[19:13] Speaker 4: depends on it, and I love that you you sold it.
[19:17] Speaker 4: But getting to see you hop up and out and
[19:19] Speaker 4: do give your gift a little spin out there. Safety
[19:21] Speaker 4: dance is one of my favorite moments in the whole show.
[19:25] Speaker 2: Well, I got to be a Betty who backup dancer
[19:27] Speaker 2: with Kelly for one number one, So blood a dream
[19:31] Speaker 2: you were?
[19:32] Speaker 4: Actually you were the first person you told me, Kevin
[19:36] Speaker 4: that somebody loved you was going to be in the show.
[19:38] Speaker 4: Did I do it?
[19:39] Speaker 2: Did I do?
[19:39] Speaker 4: Jenna?
[19:40] Speaker 2: Okay?
[19:41] Speaker 4: Where I pivoted us into the right place? You?
[19:43] Speaker 2: Yeah? Can you can you tell? Because I remember rehearsing
[19:47] Speaker 2: your number. I remember shooting your number because also Becca
[19:50] Speaker 2: said I smelled, which was like a really important thing
[19:53] Speaker 2: to learn about yourself.
[19:54] Speaker 4: Yeah, that's nice.
[19:56] Speaker 1: You'll never forget that there unlocked somebody.
[19:59] Speaker 2: Telling you that you Yeah, it was, it truly was.
[20:01] Speaker 1: But wait, so you knew and told Betty that her
[20:05] Speaker 1: song was me in the show?
[20:07] Speaker 3: I guess, But you didn't know.
[20:10] Speaker 4: I recall.
[20:11] Speaker 1: Didn't you have to approve it?
[20:14] Speaker 4: I feel like in my recollection, which now I think
[20:18] Speaker 4: might be made up given how little either of you
[20:20] Speaker 4: seem to.
[20:21] Speaker 2: No, no, don't trust our memories your Yeah.
[20:25] Speaker 4: What I recall is getting a text from you, Kevin
[20:29] Speaker 4: being like I think that somebody loves you. It's going
[20:31] Speaker 4: to be in the show. And I wanted, I wanted,
[20:34] Speaker 4: I want to sing it, but they won't let me.
[20:37] Speaker 4: It's now going to be Darren and Chris and I'm
[20:39] Speaker 4: so jealous, but I will dance my ass off and
[20:43] Speaker 4: I was like wait, and then I remember like the
[20:44] Speaker 4: official offer coming in, like you know, because you have
[20:46] Speaker 4: to miss some music supervisor likes approve the sink or whatever.
[20:51] Speaker 4: But I do think that you were the one being like,
[20:53] Speaker 4: I think this is going to happen. And then it did,
[20:56] Speaker 4: and I was on the phone to want my One
[20:59] Speaker 4: of my best friends is Lizzie. She is the biggest
[21:01] Speaker 4: gleek that I know, and I did. I texted her saying,
[21:03] Speaker 4: huge news for Lilly Perkins. I'm going to be on
[21:05] Speaker 4: and that's what you missed. And she sent me like
[21:07] Speaker 4: tears in her eyes, like so exciting, really exciting for her.
[21:11] Speaker 4: Exciting for me too, but you know I mostly lived
[21:14] Speaker 4: vicariously for her. Yeah a good friend, yeah yeah, yeah,
[21:18] Speaker 4: except to Telly, yeah, but full circle yeah yeah. And
[21:23] Speaker 4: I texted her about this and she was like, she
[21:25] Speaker 4: was like, do you know what a culturally significant moment
[21:28] Speaker 4: Glee was and you had a song on that show?
[21:30] Speaker 4: Do you know who doesn't have a song on that show?
[21:32] Speaker 4: And then she named all these people who were like
[21:34] Speaker 4: much more famous and successful than me, and she was like,
[21:36] Speaker 4: they don't have songs on Glee, but you know who
[21:38] Speaker 4: does Betty for you? And I was like, honestly, honestly, Linds.
[21:42] Speaker 1: We need champions like that.
[21:44] Speaker 3: You need champions like that all the time, just to
[21:47] Speaker 3: remind you of all the winds.
[21:50] Speaker 2: What a great memory, because that absolutely is a text
[21:53] Speaker 2: I sent.
[21:54] Speaker 3: So Kevin had the behind he had the behind the scenes,
[21:56] Speaker 3: he knew before well.
[21:57] Speaker 2: And we would get the initial script because we would
[22:00] Speaker 2: find out later when songs were changed before we actually
[22:03] Speaker 2: shot them, that they would assume, I think that we
[22:06] Speaker 2: could get any song we wanted.
[22:07] Speaker 4: Yeah, well yeah it was powerful, yeah.
[22:10] Speaker 2: System, yes, so they would put the songs in there.
[22:15] Speaker 2: And Kelly was in the writer's room at this point too,
[22:17] Speaker 2: so I'm sure you know if someone was asking for
[22:19] Speaker 2: a suggestions.
[22:20] Speaker 4: Between you and Kelly both being like, hey, you know
[22:25] Speaker 4: what we should do, I feel like I feel like
[22:27] Speaker 4: one of you was the one who suggested it, Like
[22:29] Speaker 4: I know I know that it was because I had
[22:32] Speaker 4: a homie putting putting in a good order.
[22:34] Speaker 2: It was not, but that song was already doing. You
[22:37] Speaker 2: didn't need us that song maybe maybe I don't know,
[22:40] Speaker 2: a life of its own, and it was it was
[22:43] Speaker 2: taking over the internet, and you know, it was a
[22:47] Speaker 2: gay anthem and our show was gay grey. It was
[22:52] Speaker 2: really good, good, very yeah.
[22:55] Speaker 4: Yeah. I mean that's why it was so impactful to me.
[22:57] Speaker 4: That's why I'm like a seventeen year old and he
[22:59] Speaker 4: was like auditioning on the stage interlock and being like,
[23:02] Speaker 4: I think I would make a great lesbian for your show,
[23:04] Speaker 4: and then singing a song. Is because I felt like so.
[23:08] Speaker 4: I love the fact that it was shining a light
[23:11] Speaker 4: on sort of all of the parts of and obviously
[23:13] Speaker 4: I'm sure you guys have heard this a billion times
[23:15] Speaker 4: over in your entire lifespan. But like the things that
[23:18] Speaker 4: made me feel uncool, Glee made shan a light on
[23:23] Speaker 4: to make it seem way cooler than I felt about it.
[23:26] Speaker 4: And so the fact that I loved musical theater or like,
[23:28] Speaker 4: and also the catalog of music that I was introduced
[23:30] Speaker 4: to because I was a young person who had never
[23:32] Speaker 4: heard dream On before I watched the show it's like
[23:37] Speaker 4: I loved that it sort of it really gave me.
[23:41] Speaker 4: I have a friend who uses the term unbullied theater
[23:44] Speaker 4: kid a lot to describe people who have a lot
[23:46] Speaker 4: of energy, and I actually think that Glee probably spawned
[23:49] Speaker 4: like a lot of unbullied theater kids, and maybe we
[23:51] Speaker 4: need to be like this much more bullied, you know
[23:53] Speaker 4: what I mean, just a little bit of humility around me.
[23:57] Speaker 4: You're like chipped away from the edges.
[23:59] Speaker 3: You know.
[24:01] Speaker 4: But it did give me a sort of confidence that
[24:03] Speaker 4: I that I actually I wonder if I would have had.
[24:07] Speaker 4: And that's how I became a fan of LTS because
[24:09] Speaker 4: I was like, oh my god, he's so great and
[24:10] Speaker 4: I love this boy. And then I googled Kevin mchall
[24:12] Speaker 4: and I was like, he was in a boy band.
[24:14] Speaker 4: I also love boy bands.
[24:16] Speaker 2: I did not know this was the road.
[24:19] Speaker 4: Have we ever? Have you ever spoken this much about
[24:21] Speaker 4: NLT on this show? I hope that my episode is
[24:24] Speaker 4: actually it's not the Betty Who episode, it's the NLT
[24:26] Speaker 4: episode isisode?
[24:28] Speaker 1: Oh god, we haven't spoken this much about it.
[24:31] Speaker 2: I don't know we have not. For those of you
[24:32] Speaker 2: who don't know, I was in a boy band called
[24:34] Speaker 2: NLT before you know.
[24:35] Speaker 4: Well you and a girl band, and I didn't know about.
[24:37] Speaker 2: It, like I was not.
[24:40] Speaker 1: I was an unbillied theater kid.
[24:42] Speaker 4: I love that and it worked and it's worked out
[24:44] Speaker 4: for you? Really well? It did it? Did you were
[24:47] Speaker 4: also on Broadway? I was did you? What was your experience?
[24:52] Speaker 4: You loved it? I think we're gluttons for punishment. I
[24:54] Speaker 4: think you have to be if you.
[24:55] Speaker 2: Love it, It's like, really, you really do.
[24:57] Speaker 4: It ruined my life, but it was also the happiest
[24:59] Speaker 4: I've ever been both at the same time. Do you
[25:01] Speaker 4: know what I mean?
[25:02] Speaker 2: For sure?
[25:02] Speaker 1: Was it the schedule that ruined your life? Like it's jarring?
[25:07] Speaker 4: It is jarring? Eight times a week is like maybe
[25:10] Speaker 4: too many times. I would need to say I'm gonna
[25:13] Speaker 4: go I'm gonna go out on a limb and say
[25:15] Speaker 4: that it is many times a week, and it is. Yeah,
[25:18] Speaker 4: But I think I think it just did a number
[25:21] Speaker 4: on my body. I felt like, and if I when
[25:25] Speaker 4: let me correct myself, on me manifest it. When I
[25:26] Speaker 4: do it again, that's right, I will have so many
[25:31] Speaker 4: more tools to help support me because I have the experience.
[25:34] Speaker 4: But it nothing will ever be like the first time
[25:36] Speaker 4: you do it because especially coming from a totally different
[25:40] Speaker 4: scal Like I thought I was like rock and roll,
[25:43] Speaker 4: Like I play four or five shows a week on tour,
[25:47] Speaker 4: and like there are some people like pop stars who
[25:49] Speaker 4: don't do more than two three shows a week because
[25:50] Speaker 4: it's like so much on your body. And also you're
[25:53] Speaker 4: like carrying an entire show by yourself. It's not like
[25:55] Speaker 4: you're a part of an ensemble.
[25:58] Speaker 1: For sure.
[25:59] Speaker 4: So I thought that I was. Yeah, I thought I
[26:01] Speaker 4: was like rock and roll. But that's team sport. As
[26:04] Speaker 4: you say, Jenna, that's actually one of my the things
[26:06] Speaker 4: that I love the most about it. Like I think,
[26:09] Speaker 4: like I always wish That's why I'm obsessed with NLT.
[26:11] Speaker 4: Just to bring it back to We're just.
[26:17] Speaker 2: Connection.
[26:17] Speaker 4: Sorry, yeah, where he's gonna candy episode, He's like, we
[26:20] Speaker 4: can't air this. No. The reason I'm obsessed with boy
[26:23] Speaker 4: bands and like you know, is because I I think
[26:26] Speaker 4: there I have this fantasy that I always wish that
[26:29] Speaker 4: I was in a group because I am such a
[26:31] Speaker 4: social creature by nature. Like when I played tennis, I
[26:35] Speaker 4: loved playing tennis, but I didn't playing softball because when
[26:40] Speaker 4: I was on the softball team, then I like had
[26:42] Speaker 4: people to reflect like I feel like I'm I'm a
[26:45] Speaker 4: really good member of a team because I have a
[26:48] Speaker 4: great attitude for the most part, Like I you know,
[26:50] Speaker 4: like I was. I was basically accepted to my performing
[26:53] Speaker 4: offs high school because I had a really great attitude,
[26:55] Speaker 4: not because I had the talent. He was like, you
[26:58] Speaker 4: need so much help with cello, and I think I
[27:00] Speaker 4: can give it to you. But the only reason I'm
[27:02] Speaker 4: really letting you in is because I think that you'll
[27:04] Speaker 4: be a really great addition to that we need. Like
[27:06] Speaker 4: good vibes, bring the vibes.
[27:12] Speaker 2: Similar.
[27:13] Speaker 1: Yeah, like I'm not I'm going to give you Like
[27:15] Speaker 1: I'm not.
[27:18] Speaker 4: I'm giving an a plus in.
[27:21] Speaker 6: Vibes personality, right, But I think, but I think that
[27:28] Speaker 6: that is what I loved about being on Broadway and
[27:30] Speaker 6: being Yeah, I loved it.
[27:33] Speaker 4: It's like pressure is just so different, and I loved
[27:36] Speaker 4: being someone who, even if I was having a horrible day,
[27:39] Speaker 4: could be like, look at us all it's easy for
[27:42] Speaker 4: I don't know if you had this too, Like it's
[27:43] Speaker 4: easy enough for me, who's like coming from a totally
[27:47] Speaker 4: different world. The world that you're in is the hottest
[27:50] Speaker 4: world to have. Like gratitude for yes, and so walking
[27:55] Speaker 4: into my first day of Broadway rehearsals, I was like, eny, yeah,
[27:59] Speaker 4: you know what I mean, Like I was ready to
[28:02] Speaker 4: be present and soak it all up. And it's like,
[28:07] Speaker 4: you know, it's harder for me to do that in
[28:08] Speaker 4: music because I have so much I'm like, what are
[28:11] Speaker 4: we doing?
[28:13] Speaker 2: But it's also all on you, Like it's your project,
[28:17] Speaker 2: it's your vision, it's your thing. This is like, oh,
[28:20] Speaker 2: I know the music is good.
[28:23] Speaker 1: I'm stepping into this.
[28:24] Speaker 4: Yeah, well that's crazy too. I mean, you guys are
[28:26] Speaker 4: like actors and in a you know, you have so
[28:28] Speaker 4: much more experience obviously being on camera and acting from
[28:31] Speaker 4: a different way than I do. But that was something
[28:32] Speaker 4: that was really crazy to me. Is sort of the
[28:34] Speaker 4: like coming from music, it is all in my control,
[28:38] Speaker 4: for better and for worse. And so to walk in
[28:40] Speaker 4: I remember, like the director on our first day rehearsals,
[28:43] Speaker 4: Rachel Chapkin, my queen, She's like, we were having a
[28:47] Speaker 4: table sort of conversation, me and the guy who's going
[28:49] Speaker 4: to play my husband, Philip boy and my boyfriend obsessed
[28:51] Speaker 4: with him. We were all sitting talking and someone asked
[28:54] Speaker 4: a question. The assistant director is like what time are
[28:56] Speaker 4: we rehearsing tomorrow? And I'm like, I think the schedule
[28:58] Speaker 4: says four pm. And Rachel the director looks, she goes, hey,
[29:01] Speaker 4: you don't have to worry about any of that stuff anymore.
[29:02] Speaker 4: You're just here to do this part. And I was like, whoa, yes, yes, ye,
[29:08] Speaker 4: thank you for the note.
[29:09] Speaker 2: Yes, I love a.
[29:11] Speaker 4: Note, thank you for the note. I will I will
[29:13] Speaker 4: internalize the note, I will sleep on the note, and
[29:15] Speaker 4: I will return and we've been ready to work. Yeah
[29:20] Speaker 4: really yeah, really really shot me out of my body
[29:24] Speaker 4: for a second, being like oh so I think. But
[29:26] Speaker 4: then it's like there's a choice that they tell you
[29:28] Speaker 4: to make, and you're kind of like, I don't want
[29:29] Speaker 4: to make that choice. So it's like the push and
[29:31] Speaker 4: pull of the control versus giving up control.
[29:35] Speaker 2: So nice.
[29:36] Speaker 4: Sometimes it's nice, Oh my god, tell me where to
[29:39] Speaker 4: stand to say and I'll see it.
[29:42] Speaker 2: So that's how we live. They're just tell me when
[29:47] Speaker 2: to start talking, and I'll do it.
[29:50] Speaker 1: And I will give you seven eight yes, a little blair,
[29:54] Speaker 1: and that's it.
[30:02] Speaker 2: The live experience, because you have so much experience performing live,
[30:06] Speaker 2: going on tour and all different kinds of venues.
[30:10] Speaker 1: But versus a theater performance.
[30:12] Speaker 2: A theater acting yeah in a character, Like what is
[30:17] Speaker 2: that terrifying? Like was that a whole different level or
[30:20] Speaker 2: was that like, Oh I got this.
[30:22] Speaker 4: I think I am ultimately really proud of the way
[30:25] Speaker 4: I showed up on my first night, obviously, like and
[30:30] Speaker 4: it grows so much. That's something that really shook me
[30:33] Speaker 4: to my core because like I'm building a tour right now,
[30:35] Speaker 4: I'm about to go onto this summer. Normally, what we'll
[30:38] Speaker 4: do is we'll stop in a city, a smaller city,
[30:41] Speaker 4: and play a smaller venue than the rest of the
[30:43] Speaker 4: venues as a warm up show. You go, this is
[30:46] Speaker 4: the first time we're running to do. If you will, Yeah,
[30:48] Speaker 4: where you go? I'm gonna I'm going to fall on
[30:51] Speaker 4: my face, and the people in Phoenix, Arizona are going
[30:53] Speaker 4: to be really kind and generous with me because I'm
[30:55] Speaker 4: going to say, this is our first show. You're like
[30:56] Speaker 4: seeing a work in progress. Thank you so much. You
[30:59] Speaker 4: don't like open in front of everybody who's going to
[31:02] Speaker 4: come see you, And that's the time they're going to
[31:04] Speaker 4: come see you, do you know what I mean? Opening
[31:07] Speaker 4: night and I remember seeing Heather Headley in the Color
[31:09] Speaker 4: Purple on her opening night when she took over from
[31:11] Speaker 4: Jennifer Hudson. Yes, And I remember she dropped a line
[31:16] Speaker 4: and she and she went and she picked it up
[31:19] Speaker 4: and she just and it actually, to me felt so
[31:21] Speaker 4: exciting to see you, like the process of her going
[31:25] Speaker 4: this titan of performer that I think can do no
[31:28] Speaker 4: wrong dropping a line and nobody died. Yeah, and everything's fine,
[31:33] Speaker 4: and she handled it gracefully and it actually gave me
[31:35] Speaker 4: goosey seeing her fall back into it. I'm like, oh
[31:37] Speaker 4: my god, how exciting. So I think I am ultimately
[31:40] Speaker 4: really proud of how I showed up at my opening night.
[31:44] Speaker 4: But I remember I opened like September fifth, and I
[31:48] Speaker 4: was in it until February fourth or something like that.
[31:51] Speaker 4: So in that span, I remember like Thanksgiving being like
[31:55] Speaker 4: I think I'm eating this up, but like that's two
[31:57] Speaker 4: months later, do you know what I mean. Yeah, So,
[32:00] Speaker 4: like in a pop show, we have one warm up
[32:02] Speaker 4: show and then it's tight and we are doing it
[32:04] Speaker 4: and no changes are being made and we are hitting it.
[32:07] Speaker 4: For me, like in a month of rehearsals and the
[32:10] Speaker 4: director looking at me being like, well, you're going to
[32:12] Speaker 4: find it. I'm like, what do you No, No, no,
[32:14] Speaker 4: that's not an answer to my question, what do you
[32:15] Speaker 4: mean I'm going to find it? I need to know
[32:17] Speaker 4: what it is so that that's so interesting, like you're
[32:22] Speaker 4: thrown out to go. I'm going to find this in
[32:25] Speaker 4: front of you. And it is the most vulnerable thing
[32:28] Speaker 4: I've ever done in my life. And I've done some
[32:30] Speaker 4: strange and vulnerable things, yes, And I think the experience
[32:34] Speaker 4: of like showing up and finding it in front of everybody,
[32:39] Speaker 4: to then arrive and know that I and start to
[32:42] Speaker 4: be like, oh, I think I've dropped in. Of course,
[32:45] Speaker 4: I do wish that the part where I arrived and
[32:48] Speaker 4: went I now I figured it out. I kind of
[32:50] Speaker 4: do wish that was like September fifth, do you know
[32:52] Speaker 4: what I mean? I think that's a goal that I
[32:55] Speaker 4: would have it to go back to a show with
[32:58] Speaker 4: is shortened my amount of time that it took me
[33:01] Speaker 4: to get comfortable and drop in. It's like that was
[33:04] Speaker 4: two and a half months, Like I'd love to do
[33:06] Speaker 4: it in six weeks next time or part.
[33:08] Speaker 2: Of the magic though, I feel like I feel the
[33:11] Speaker 2: exact same way as you. But when I hear people
[33:14] Speaker 2: who do shows for like years or something, how do.
[33:17] Speaker 4: You do a show that.
[33:20] Speaker 2: No idea, but the fact that the key seems to be,
[33:26] Speaker 2: like the one consistent thing everybody seems to say is
[33:28] Speaker 2: that they are finding new things things, yeah, every night.
[33:32] Speaker 2: And so maybe I'm saying this more for me than
[33:37] Speaker 2: for you, but I feel like.
[33:38] Speaker 4: No, yeah, but that's a part of it.
[33:40] Speaker 2: But like yeah, like sort of like I guess the
[33:42] Speaker 2: grace that you give yourself to sort of explore that
[33:45] Speaker 2: where pop world, the perfectionist musician in us is like, no,
[33:51] Speaker 2: this has to be right, this has to be my
[33:53] Speaker 2: vision immediately, so you can see exactly what I'm able
[33:56] Speaker 2: to give you as opposed to this is a complex character,
[34:00] Speaker 2: and you're seeing a full character and embodied on stage,
[34:04] Speaker 2: interacting with other people as other actors are coming and
[34:07] Speaker 2: going y. And so for your own sanity to not
[34:11] Speaker 2: get tired of playing a role for five months or
[34:13] Speaker 2: wherever long you're doing it is to be able to
[34:16] Speaker 2: make yourself excited every night too, with the possibility of
[34:20] Speaker 2: finding something new.
[34:22] Speaker 4: Well, And like, you know, I felt so lucky because
[34:26] Speaker 4: Haiti's town is so epic. It's like it's not you know,
[34:33] Speaker 4: it's much less five to six, seven eight than I
[34:35] Speaker 4: feel like my personality is do you know what I mean?
[34:38] Speaker 4: It's like it's giving art, it's giving Eric. It's the
[34:42] Speaker 4: first time I saw it. I remember being like, I
[34:44] Speaker 4: don't know if I get it. I know it made
[34:46] Speaker 4: me feel something, but I and I'm pretty I'm pretty smart,
[34:51] Speaker 4: and I walked away being like, I know that it
[34:55] Speaker 4: made me feel but I have so many questions, and
[34:58] Speaker 4: it's like I wish I was in rehearsal. Yeah, and
[35:02] Speaker 4: I watched it so often when I was in rehearsals,
[35:04] Speaker 4: you know, I would like for rehearsals just like standing
[35:06] Speaker 4: at the back of the room and watching the track.
[35:07] Speaker 4: And then I did the moment where you're staying on
[35:08] Speaker 4: the side and you're like following the try was like
[35:11] Speaker 4: following Joelle around that she did her performance. And I remember,
[35:16] Speaker 4: like being in the show three months in being like, oh,
[35:20] Speaker 4: that's really beautiful, Like there's it's so dense. Yeah that
[35:24] Speaker 4: I think it. It gave me so much opportunity to
[35:28] Speaker 4: continue that exploration that you're talking about, keV. That's like
[35:32] Speaker 4: I am still finding how do I make This line
[35:35] Speaker 4: has never really made sense to me, And I'm just
[35:37] Speaker 4: saying it because I have to say it because this
[35:38] Speaker 4: is the time that I say this line. But now
[35:41] Speaker 4: all of the other lines I have figured out what
[35:43] Speaker 4: they mean and how to make make sense. And now
[35:45] Speaker 4: this line is the one that I'm going to spend
[35:47] Speaker 4: the next week trying to make it land and feel
[35:49] Speaker 4: not like I'm coming out with my body to say
[35:51] Speaker 4: the line that I'm supposed to say before I like
[35:53] Speaker 4: drop it. You know, I also learned so much about
[35:56] Speaker 4: and Jenna, I'm so curious to see like your experience
[35:58] Speaker 4: about this too, like I.
[35:59] Speaker 2: Learned, and.
[36:01] Speaker 4: Film and TV is so such a different mode than theater,
[36:06] Speaker 4: and it's such a different embodiment to me, Like because
[36:09] Speaker 4: in film and TV something I think I'm really good at,
[36:12] Speaker 4: or like music videos, or like doing anything with camera,
[36:15] Speaker 4: I'm thinking about camera and I'm thinking about angle on
[36:18] Speaker 4: camera and where is the camera and find it's like
[36:21] Speaker 4: that it's a part of your the interplay of your performance,
[36:26] Speaker 4: and in a in a theater setting, of course, all
[36:29] Speaker 4: of that is gone. And I learned so much from
[36:32] Speaker 4: watching because I tried to see a lot of theater
[36:34] Speaker 4: while I was like while I was in rehearsals and
[36:37] Speaker 4: getting ready for the show, and then when I left
[36:38] Speaker 4: the show, I did like a week after I closed,
[36:41] Speaker 4: where I saw a show like seven shows in. I remember,
[36:48] Speaker 4: and I learned so much about like what being dropped
[36:51] Speaker 4: in means, Like that's such a like dropped in, like
[36:57] Speaker 4: you shut up, Like what do you talkking about?
[37:01] Speaker 2: True?
[37:01] Speaker 4: And I saw it and I like remember being like, oh,
[37:06] Speaker 4: it's the thing of making yourself the most alive and
[37:10] Speaker 4: open and present. It's about being present, and like so
[37:16] Speaker 4: much of my pop music life, I'm like, yeah, it's
[37:21] Speaker 4: like I'm I do feel present, but I'm in my
[37:24] Speaker 4: I'm a little bit more inside of myself thinking about
[37:26] Speaker 4: what I'm doing and serving. And it's not the same mechanism.
[37:29] Speaker 4: And I thought it would translate a lot and it
[37:31] Speaker 4: doesn't at all.
[37:32] Speaker 2: And I for any it's like this may be a
[37:37] Speaker 2: little too specific for any. No, it's never never understand this.
[37:41] Speaker 2: I really will Beyonce tours before Renaissance. It's the pop
[37:47] Speaker 2: star perfectionist, you know, the little sort of we're going
[37:51] Speaker 2: to hit these fun She is working, yes, and then Renaissance.
[37:58] Speaker 2: She's dropping lyrics, she's talking to audience members. She's never
[38:02] Speaker 2: looked more alive on stage in her life. Yes, Yes,
[38:06] Speaker 2: and we feel Yes. The same, but like when you
[38:10] Speaker 2: see somebody who's quote unquote dropped in the even if
[38:14] Speaker 2: it's in a stadium or if it's in a theater,
[38:16] Speaker 2: you feel that as an audience member.
[38:18] Speaker 4: Yeah, and the Heather Headley dropping her line and I go,
[38:22] Speaker 4: but nothing has ever been more human or alive or
[38:24] Speaker 4: like in front of me. And I think that it's
[38:27] Speaker 4: so funny because culturally we grew up in the same
[38:30] Speaker 4: era of like obviously Beyonce is such a kind of
[38:33] Speaker 4: the peak of you know, performance sort of. It's like
[38:37] Speaker 4: feels like so often people have been chasing her for forever,
[38:39] Speaker 4: whether it's like when people were on stage or like
[38:41] Speaker 4: she's such a trendsetter as far as like how to
[38:43] Speaker 4: do the thing that we do in our so growing
[38:47] Speaker 4: up and like studying her, I have spent so much time.
[38:50] Speaker 4: I feel like this is also a bonding moment for us.
[38:52] Speaker 4: Was like really talking about Beyonce on this level, like
[38:57] Speaker 4: I love single Ladies, where like the performance from Glastonbury
[39:02] Speaker 4: the end of time, but do you know what I mean?
[39:05] Speaker 4: And I feel like that a version of her informed
[39:10] Speaker 4: so much of what I actually learned about like perfectionism.
[39:15] Speaker 4: But I actually think that's the thing that for someone
[39:18] Speaker 4: who wasn't a Beyonce fan in that era, that's what
[39:21] Speaker 4: was alienating to them as they go. I get that
[39:23] Speaker 4: she's good, but I have a hard time connecting with it.
[39:25] Speaker 4: And I never understood that because I'm like, what do
[39:27] Speaker 4: you mean?
[39:28] Speaker 2: Yeah, because like the boy bands are Britney Spears, it
[39:30] Speaker 2: was all perfection. Everything was, yes, absolutely, and it's.
[39:36] Speaker 4: Not like free painting. And I think that, and like
[39:41] Speaker 4: when I see free painting at work in pop music,
[39:44] Speaker 4: I'm a little bit like, can we get some structure
[39:45] Speaker 4: in here? I want a little bit of five scent,
[39:48] Speaker 4: And so finding the balance of that, I think is
[39:50] Speaker 4: something I'm watching her do because she's like had children
[39:54] Speaker 4: and has less, you know, I think it feels more
[39:57] Speaker 4: free in a way, and so I think that it
[39:59] Speaker 4: really does seem to be a balance between those things.
[40:01] Speaker 4: And I think that's like a really great example of
[40:04] Speaker 4: me being in Hadestown and being like, I'm supposed to
[40:06] Speaker 4: be this thing, and then I'm like, but I'm thinking
[40:09] Speaker 4: about it too much, and then I'm like, no, I'm
[40:11] Speaker 4: in the room, and it's crazy. I felt very much
[40:14] Speaker 4: like I was playing a video game that was the
[40:18] Speaker 4: same video game over and over again, and each performance
[40:21] Speaker 4: was me trying to get a higher score. I'm trying
[40:23] Speaker 4: to get the perfect score on the game, and if
[40:27] Speaker 4: I trip over myself here, it's like deduct ten points.
[40:30] Speaker 2: You know, It's like funny, Yeah, that was That.
[40:32] Speaker 4: Was the experience I sometimes came. I felt like I
[40:35] Speaker 4: was like yeah, like you know, you like wind up
[40:37] Speaker 4: the toy and then all of a sudden you're like
[40:39] Speaker 4: off to the races again doing the same thing. But
[40:42] Speaker 4: I did ultimately fall in love with it, and it's
[40:45] Speaker 4: changed the way I approach performing because it's so much
[40:48] Speaker 4: more of that like in the room, coming from you know,
[40:50] Speaker 4: my soul to the audience. I feel so much more
[40:54] Speaker 4: connected in that way than I ever did before I
[40:56] Speaker 4: did it. It's pretty crazy, you get it.
[40:58] Speaker 2: Do you think you were able to appreciate that experience
[41:03] Speaker 2: and the ability to be present and notice all those things,
[41:08] Speaker 2: like was because of your age and experience beforehand, Like
[41:12] Speaker 2: if you call me old because you're elderly.
[41:15] Speaker 4: Because I'm ancient. And Siri jumped in just now she
[41:18] Speaker 4: was like, I'm sorry, did you just call her old?
[41:20] Speaker 2: Did you need me? Because you know it's I think
[41:23] Speaker 2: it's when you especially if you're doing something for the
[41:25] Speaker 2: first time. It's sort of like like fight or fight,
[41:28] Speaker 2: and I need to figure out how to do this.
[41:30] Speaker 2: I'm gonna be in front of a live audience eight
[41:32] Speaker 2: times a week. But it sounds like you were really
[41:35] Speaker 2: like grounded and able to pay attention to the whole
[41:39] Speaker 2: experience as a whole.
[41:40] Speaker 4: I think that that is definitely from experience, just because
[41:44] Speaker 4: I remember listening, Man, you guys must have like so
[41:47] Speaker 4: much to say about this, and I'd love to hear
[41:49] Speaker 4: what your thoughts are on this. Like I remember listening
[41:52] Speaker 4: to a podcast about it was BJ from the Office
[41:58] Speaker 4: talking about being on the office and being so overwhelmed
[42:02] Speaker 4: by the experience and the success of the show that
[42:04] Speaker 4: actually he didn't really enjoy it that much. And he
[42:07] Speaker 4: looks back and he's like, man, I really I actually
[42:09] Speaker 4: missed it. I like this is what they talk about
[42:12] Speaker 4: when they talk about missing it. Yes, And I feel
[42:17] Speaker 4: like there's been so many moments in my music career
[42:20] Speaker 4: where I haven't enjoyed the whole point. That's the whole point.
[42:24] Speaker 4: You know. It's like, I'm not rich, so if I'm
[42:28] Speaker 4: miserable as well, then I'm doing something wrong, you know what.
[42:30] Speaker 4: I mean, it's like I'm not doing this for my health.
[42:33] Speaker 4: I'm like trying to find joy and vibrate at passion.
[42:38] Speaker 4: And you know, music is like the thing that brings
[42:42] Speaker 4: me the most emotional satisfaction, whether it's making me cry
[42:45] Speaker 4: or making me laugh or making me dance. It's like
[42:48] Speaker 4: it is so the lifeblood of the joy in my experience,
[42:51] Speaker 4: and so to then spend ten years working in it
[42:54] Speaker 4: will really make you hate it. And I am active
[43:00] Speaker 4: trying to work on you know, reapproaching music from this
[43:04] Speaker 4: place now of sort of taking a little bit of
[43:05] Speaker 4: time off and going I really want to be happy. Yeah,
[43:10] Speaker 4: that seems like.
[43:10] Speaker 1: A requirement now, yes, yes.
[43:12] Speaker 4: But I do think that going into Hadestown because of
[43:15] Speaker 4: the experience that I'd had in music where I did
[43:17] Speaker 4: feel a little bit like OHM as my life so hard,
[43:20] Speaker 4: I'm getting flown around the world to go play shows,
[43:23] Speaker 4: and I'm miserable. It's like I hated being that person.
[43:26] Speaker 4: Even as as I was that person, I knew I
[43:28] Speaker 4: was doing it wrong. That when Hadestown came and I
[43:31] Speaker 4: felt so lucky because I felt like I do feel
[43:34] Speaker 4: like I've worked really hard for so long and having
[43:37] Speaker 4: a lot of ways actually not reached the benefits of
[43:40] Speaker 4: so much of that time and effort that I've put in,
[43:42] Speaker 4: which is like an investment. It's all an investment to
[43:46] Speaker 4: get an opportunity like that that actually felt like it
[43:48] Speaker 4: had been dropped out of heaven. Like for me, I
[43:52] Speaker 4: was like, I'm not. The one thing I'm not going
[43:54] Speaker 4: to do is miss this. And I will say out
[43:57] Speaker 4: of the hundred and I want to, I think it's
[43:58] Speaker 4: one hundred and sixty seven shows.
[44:01] Speaker 2: Wow.
[44:01] Speaker 4: Personally, I think I can count to one two shows
[44:06] Speaker 4: where I was like, I don't want to be here.
[44:08] Speaker 4: I hate this. I am full autopilot getting through the
[44:10] Speaker 4: show because I am I'm dead. I'm done. Nobody look
[44:13] Speaker 4: at me. Don't perceive me. This is not my day. Please.
[44:16] Speaker 3: Yeah, it's that's ratio, ratio.
[44:22] Speaker 1: That's inevitable.
[44:23] Speaker 4: I expected it to be higher, but I was. I
[44:26] Speaker 4: really made an effort to when I walked into the
[44:28] Speaker 4: building to be like I'm going to go say high
[44:30] Speaker 4: to stage management and I'm going to knock on the
[44:32] Speaker 4: doors and be like hey, everybody, it's me many who
[44:35] Speaker 4: and I'm so happy to be here and like I
[44:38] Speaker 4: know that it's funny, Like there are some people who
[44:40] Speaker 4: were like, uh, like with all your joy, like are
[44:44] Speaker 4: you so happy to be here? And I'm like I
[44:46] Speaker 4: get that. And if that's not your time, I understand,
[44:49] Speaker 4: and I don't have to bring this to your front
[44:51] Speaker 4: door either. But that's for me the way that it
[44:54] Speaker 4: felt accessible and kind of kept me present in the
[44:58] Speaker 4: fact that I was literally living a childhood dream, because
[45:02] Speaker 4: it's like when you work your whole life to live
[45:04] Speaker 4: your childhood dream, then all of a sudden, it's hard
[45:06] Speaker 4: to drop in and be like, oh my god, I'm
[45:08] Speaker 4: a pop star playing show for fans, Like yeah, there's
[45:10] Speaker 4: so much work that went into it. It's hard for
[45:12] Speaker 4: me to then like oh my gosh. And then you
[45:14] Speaker 4: like get to be on Broadway and you're like no, no, no,
[45:16] Speaker 4: this is like I have not spent the last ten
[45:18] Speaker 4: years auditioning for Broadway shows.
[45:20] Speaker 2: Yeah, Like yeah, that did.
[45:21] Speaker 4: That makes that a little bit either more or harder,
[45:25] Speaker 4: you know, to like be like I've worked so hard
[45:27] Speaker 4: for this, like of course I deserve this. It's like
[45:29] Speaker 4: a different energy to approach it like me, yeah, you
[45:33] Speaker 4: want me, which is a different vibe.
[45:37] Speaker 1: But that's the fun Broadway vibe. That's the fun vibe
[45:40] Speaker 1: to have.
[45:48] Speaker 2: When Somebody Loves You ended up on Glee. It was
[45:51] Speaker 2: also one of those moments of obviously the show was
[45:54] Speaker 2: not necessarily at its peak at that point, no, I'll
[45:57] Speaker 2: take it, yeah, but it was also like, yeah, this
[45:59] Speaker 2: is my friend and like we were all number one, you.
[46:02] Speaker 4: Know, introduce me to all of you guys. That's like
[46:04] Speaker 4: how the video first Friends Yeah in La was because
[46:10] Speaker 4: Kenny found my EP online and shared it with all
[46:14] Speaker 4: of his friends, being.
[46:15] Speaker 2: Like, this is sick. Basically happened.
[46:17] Speaker 4: Yes, Kenny found the EP that's from from I Recall
[46:20] Speaker 4: to My Best Recollection. Kenny was a little SoundCloud kid. Yeah,
[46:24] Speaker 4: my first EP was free online and he said, somebody
[46:27] Speaker 4: loves You hits. I think it's even before the viral video,
[46:30] Speaker 4: do you know what I mean? He was like it
[46:31] Speaker 4: was really a treadsetter. So it felt very serendipitous, and
[46:34] Speaker 4: it was such a like I'm so grateful for like
[46:40] Speaker 4: the moments that do happen like that, whether it's Haiti
[46:42] Speaker 4: Town or like me getting the you texting me being
[46:44] Speaker 4: like I think we're going to do Somebody Loves You
[46:46] Speaker 4: on Glee. I remember being like, oh my, Like that's
[46:49] Speaker 4: a moment where I get to go, Like I can
[46:52] Speaker 4: directly shoot back to being in my body when I'm
[46:55] Speaker 4: sixteen watching on my like weird little laptop in high school,
[47:00] Speaker 4: like the newest download I bought those seasons on Apple,
[47:03] Speaker 4: do you know what I mean? Like before I was
[47:06] Speaker 4: like I was a fan and I was also downloading
[47:09] Speaker 4: the albums like my entire iTunes. I remember I did
[47:12] Speaker 4: like a six hour road trip to go make some
[47:14] Speaker 4: music when I was nineteen. In the entire drive, I
[47:16] Speaker 4: was listening to the Glee soundtracks, do you know what
[47:17] Speaker 4: I mean? Like it was such a huge part of
[47:20] Speaker 4: my young life that then I got to the fact
[47:24] Speaker 4: that I got to be a part of it in
[47:25] Speaker 4: any kind of small way felt so unreal and like
[47:31] Speaker 4: such a satisfying moment for me.
[47:34] Speaker 2: Yeah, but I'm so.
[47:35] Speaker 4: I'm so curious about you guys, like that feeling of
[47:37] Speaker 4: sort of you were in this huge moment and when
[47:41] Speaker 4: you were in it, where you like, I'm having trouble
[47:43] Speaker 4: being in it, or like, how can you even possibly
[47:45] Speaker 4: be in it when you don't even know how big
[47:47] Speaker 4: it's going to be? Like I do want to know
[47:49] Speaker 4: how you felt about that at the time. It's probably
[47:51] Speaker 4: a huge question.
[47:52] Speaker 3: I think towards the end in retrospect, like I wish
[47:56] Speaker 3: I had I resonated with, like BJ, like I wish
[48:01] Speaker 3: I had enjoyed and appreciated that time of being so
[48:06] Speaker 3: young and so on top of the world and just
[48:09] Speaker 3: being able to really basking it. I don't think I
[48:14] Speaker 3: hated it, but I also didn't love it as.
[48:16] Speaker 1: Much as I could have.
[48:18] Speaker 3: So there's definitely like a vibe that I, if I
[48:21] Speaker 3: could go back, I would be I would be smiling
[48:24] Speaker 3: every day, you know, like there would I would be
[48:26] Speaker 3: knocking on people's doors and saying hello.
[48:28] Speaker 4: And you must also be like it's never going to end.
[48:31] Speaker 4: That's the other part of it. It's like it went
[48:33] Speaker 4: for so many seasons that there also must have been
[48:35] Speaker 4: a part of you that.
[48:36] Speaker 3: Was like around season four, we kind of new classes
[48:40] Speaker 3: came in, things started to people started wanting to do
[48:43] Speaker 3: other projects. We were so hot at that time that
[48:46] Speaker 3: like you think you're never gonna stop working after that,
[48:48] Speaker 3: so you're like, get me off this thing that made
[48:49] Speaker 3: me and let me go do the new thing. And
[48:53] Speaker 3: that's when we kind of lost that connection. And obviously
[48:57] Speaker 3: we came back at times and found each other again
[48:59] Speaker 3: and came you know, left, but a lot of people
[49:02] Speaker 3: left at the end, and for me in particular, like
[49:04] Speaker 3: I left through halfway through season six, and then I
[49:07] Speaker 3: didn't come back until really like this the finale, to
[49:09] Speaker 3: like really appreciate it. So I definitely wish that I
[49:13] Speaker 3: had had a different outlook towards the end. But I
[49:18] Speaker 3: think in the beginning we all felt I felt very
[49:22] Speaker 3: attached to the show and very emotional towards it because
[49:27] Speaker 3: it was my dream coming true.
[49:29] Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, fighting in a bottle, and you were a
[49:32] Speaker 4: part of it, especially at a time when like we
[49:35] Speaker 4: didn't have seventeen different shows that were about like kids
[49:38] Speaker 4: who dance. Now, I was just like now a huge
[49:41] Speaker 4: part of culture because Glee made it that, like you
[49:43] Speaker 4: were on the forefront of that.
[49:45] Speaker 3: It took longer for Kevin to like lose that luster,
[49:48] Speaker 3: like he made it really really far, I really really
[49:52] Speaker 3: really far. Like I give him way farther than all
[49:55] Speaker 3: of us, Like he was the last one standing, probably smiling,
[49:58] Speaker 3: so like I take you longer.
[50:01] Speaker 2: But I think that comes from my experience of not
[50:05] Speaker 2: having success, like being in the boy band for so
[50:09] Speaker 2: long and working so is so hard at it, and
[50:13] Speaker 2: we didn't really get there at all, And.
[50:18] Speaker 4: That's so crazy because like when you're in like a
[50:23] Speaker 4: industry plant situation like that where they pick boys and
[50:27] Speaker 4: they put you together and then they give you the song,
[50:31] Speaker 4: it's like that also must have felt like all my
[50:34] Speaker 4: dreams are coming true, but and it is so much
[50:36] Speaker 4: hard work. And then you're like shooting the music videos
[50:39] Speaker 4: and you're like, I'm shooting the music video and I'm
[50:42] Speaker 4: like signed to a record label, and like all of
[50:44] Speaker 4: these crazy producers and like execs are like having these
[50:47] Speaker 4: conversations with me that the like putting that in front
[50:51] Speaker 4: of you and then sort of being like, oh, but
[50:53] Speaker 4: this isn't It does give you a different perspective.
[50:57] Speaker 2: Totally, because when I had also been trying to act
[51:00] Speaker 2: for forever and I would do little guest spots here,
[51:02] Speaker 2: So it was like the best combination of all the
[51:05] Speaker 2: things I was interested in and trying to pursue professionally,
[51:10] Speaker 2: and then the magical accident of it working. And as
[51:15] Speaker 2: someone who had, you know, come from not a successful
[51:18] Speaker 2: music career, like seeing the charts every week and being
[51:22] Speaker 2: able to talk to the chairman of Columbia Records about
[51:26] Speaker 2: Beyonce's leaked singles or talk to the President of Columbia
[51:30] Speaker 2: about how like stories about Adele recording someone like you
[51:33] Speaker 2: were like I.
[51:34] Speaker 4: Subscribing to Hits magazine.
[51:36] Speaker 2: Like yes, like that's what I like, I understood from
[51:41] Speaker 2: Jump what it meant to have that level of success, Yes,
[51:46] Speaker 2: and how rare and special it was. And like I
[51:49] Speaker 2: was the one to send the rest of the group
[51:51] Speaker 2: of like, don't stop believing our version is number four
[51:53] Speaker 2: on Billboard Hot one hundred. Yeah, I responded and said
[51:58] Speaker 2: is that good? And I was like you guys, yeah,
[52:02] Speaker 2: And I wasn't even like mad at them or anything.
[52:04] Speaker 2: I was like, no, of course, now like no, no,
[52:08] Speaker 2: it is the fourth biggest song.
[52:09] Speaker 4: Maybe the biggest thing that we could possibly do.
[52:12] Speaker 2: I because like I would check the Billboard charts every
[52:16] Speaker 2: single week as a kids.
[52:17] Speaker 4: Literally knew what it meant in a different way.
[52:19] Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, And so I was just like being able
[52:23] Speaker 2: to shoot at Paramount and drive through those gates, and.
[52:26] Speaker 4: I when I when I get a lot pass, when
[52:31] Speaker 4: I get it, when I get a parking pass for
[52:32] Speaker 4: the lot because I got a meeting, I'm driving on
[52:35] Speaker 4: to the lot and I'm like this this, I don't
[52:37] Speaker 4: have to.
[52:37] Speaker 1: Park at the lot down the block ticket and validate.
[52:40] Speaker 2: Yeah, that is your life. That was our life for
[52:42] Speaker 2: seven years. And so then when it spits you out
[52:45] Speaker 2: and you go.
[52:46] Speaker 1: Back, welcome to the real life.
[52:49] Speaker 2: And like, you can't have a normal experience because like
[52:52] Speaker 2: all of my things sound obnoxious, all my experiences sound crazy.
[52:56] Speaker 4: They were. They also were.
[52:58] Speaker 2: They were, and like you met me in the middle
[52:59] Speaker 2: of that, and like that's why it was. Really, I
[53:03] Speaker 2: will say, and I'm not just saying this. I'm not
[53:06] Speaker 2: just saying this because you're here. Really I tell people this.
[53:09] Speaker 2: I was very surprised.
[53:12] Speaker 4: Meeting so many of the costs from Glee at because
[53:15] Speaker 4: I remember, like we had I went to a couple
[53:17] Speaker 4: of parties and there was just like a group of
[53:18] Speaker 4: you guys, a lot of socially spie.
[53:23] Speaker 2: Oh my gosh.
[53:25] Speaker 4: So I remember meeting this particular group of you, and
[53:29] Speaker 4: having been such a fan of the show, I remember
[53:31] Speaker 4: being really surprised at how normal adjacent you all were, Like, yes,
[53:36] Speaker 4: you were on a massive TV show and we were
[53:38] Speaker 4: in the middle of this thing happening, but you weren't
[53:40] Speaker 4: Like I wasn't like, oh my god, I'm just trying
[53:43] Speaker 4: to menalty, and you were like, please stay tened beat
[53:45] Speaker 4: away from me, Like I knew that I freaked you out,
[53:47] Speaker 4: but I also knew that you got it, you know
[53:48] Speaker 4: what I mean. And I remember being like that kind
[53:51] Speaker 4: of surprised me, but what you were saying, Kevin, it
[53:53] Speaker 4: kind of made me think. So I was having a
[53:55] Speaker 4: conversation with a friend because like all we all all
[53:57] Speaker 4: were all doing in this business, like trying to get
[54:00] Speaker 4: a little bit closer, you know, that investment. You're like
[54:03] Speaker 4: putting your time in and hustling and working and hopefully
[54:06] Speaker 4: something is going to come of it, and you don't
[54:07] Speaker 4: know what it's going to be. And I think your
[54:09] Speaker 4: guys's experienced. I had a friend say to me, if
[54:12] Speaker 4: you just assume that ninety nine point nine percent of
[54:16] Speaker 4: things will be failures, because that is actually the race,
[54:19] Speaker 4: that is like the real ratio of what success looks like,
[54:24] Speaker 4: particularly in this business. Yeah, ninety nine point nine percent
[54:27] Speaker 4: of stuff is going to fail. So then you're like, oh,
[54:30] Speaker 4: I can just dare to fail and do whatever I
[54:33] Speaker 4: want and assume that it's going to fail. And if
[54:35] Speaker 4: it happens to be that point one percent of a
[54:37] Speaker 4: show like Glee, how lucky are you to be a
[54:41] Speaker 4: part of that thing?
[54:42] Speaker 2: I mean the luckiest and then your gods from the
[54:46] Speaker 2: get go, you know.
[54:48] Speaker 4: But I think it's so it was such lightning in
[54:51] Speaker 4: a bottle for you guys to be a part of
[54:53] Speaker 4: this thing, and I when I met you, I felt
[54:57] Speaker 4: like you were handling it with such grace and with
[54:59] Speaker 4: like your head screwed on straight, which I probably wouldn't have,
[55:03] Speaker 4: you know what I mean. Sometimes I think about if
[55:04] Speaker 4: somebody loves you had been like because it was like
[55:07] Speaker 4: a hit adjacent song, it like had a really viral moment,
[55:11] Speaker 4: but it was never like I went to like number
[55:13] Speaker 4: one on the dance chart, but it never went to
[55:15] Speaker 4: like radio radio because Arsay didn't service it because they
[55:17] Speaker 4: didn't want me to be the girl from the viral
[55:19] Speaker 4: video because they thought that was bad. Viral was bad when.
[55:22] Speaker 2: I say yeah, it was at the same time hilarious.
[55:25] Speaker 4: It was Rebecca back Friday and Chet Smoke or selfie
[55:28] Speaker 4: and they were like, you're viral. This is bad and
[55:31] Speaker 4: I was like, uh oh. And then they didn't send
[55:34] Speaker 4: my song to radio when everybody was already playing it.
[55:36] Speaker 4: And then on my next record when they picked up
[55:38] Speaker 4: my option, they were like, so we need you to
[55:39] Speaker 4: have a viral hit, and I was like totally, But
[55:44] Speaker 4: I think that I think I think sometimes like if
[55:48] Speaker 4: somebody loves you had been the biggest hit in the
[55:49] Speaker 4: world and I was, I was twenty one, like I
[55:51] Speaker 4: might be dead, you know what I mean?
[55:53] Speaker 1: Like wow, I really wow.
[55:57] Speaker 4: I didn't have my head screwed ons right, I was
[55:58] Speaker 4: a bab I mean just a little bet.
[56:01] Speaker 3: We're just so like on a like ill equipped, Like
[56:04] Speaker 3: nobody equips you for that, you know that part of
[56:07] Speaker 3: the industry.
[56:08] Speaker 1: So it's it's tis what.
[56:09] Speaker 4: Babies too, you know. That's why I was so surprised
[56:13] Speaker 4: that you were.
[56:13] Speaker 2: So impressive though, because you've built your stuff on your own.
[56:16] Speaker 2: Do you know what, like you had a hit on
[56:19] Speaker 2: your own or hit adjacent viral moment at twenty one.
[56:23] Speaker 4: Yeah, that is accident.
[56:24] Speaker 2: Yeah, that's crazy.
[56:26] Speaker 3: Thank you so much for like just being so open
[56:28] Speaker 3: and sharing and we love you so much and we
[56:30] Speaker 3: really appreciate you, and and I thank you.
[56:33] Speaker 4: Thank you.
