[1:08] Speaker 4: I mean there's so many now, it's like literally I
[1:12] Speaker 4: always say, it's like the gift that keeps on giving.
[1:14] Speaker 3: Man, it like never happen.
[1:15] Speaker 5: That's what we say about Glee, so right, like it
[1:19] Speaker 5: like never it's like it just never stops. Oh no,
[1:24] Speaker 5: like just when you think you can't do anything more,
[1:27] Speaker 5: you're like, oh, now there's a reunion special or like right,
[1:30] Speaker 5: or like no, I totally feel that where like somebody
[1:34] Speaker 5: wins a Tony and then they're.
[1:35] Speaker 3: Like everybody in Glee has wanted copy.
[1:39] Speaker 4: Right, Like every like no matter what, it's like when one,
[1:43] Speaker 4: when one succeeds, all succeeds.
[1:45] Speaker 2: Right exactly. It's like when you're part of something, like
[1:48] Speaker 2: it's the biggest well, like Matty came into like Matt
[1:52] Speaker 2: and Jane came into it having done bigger things, Like
[1:54] Speaker 2: for all of us, it was like the biggest thing
[1:55] Speaker 2: we had done.
[1:56] Speaker 4: No, Lee was the I mean sure Matt had done
[2:00] Speaker 4: big things, but nothing was bigger than Glee.
[2:03] Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean Maybee but no.
[2:06] Speaker 4: But really no, like think about it, like, yes, she
[2:09] Speaker 4: done big things, but like it's like, yeah, that's like
[2:12] Speaker 4: from my generation. It's like that's nine two and oh
[2:14] Speaker 4: there was nothing going to be bigger than that for
[2:17] Speaker 4: Tory Spelling and like that that was always going to
[2:19] Speaker 4: be you know, like for me, hairs There'll be nothing
[2:23] Speaker 4: bigger than hairspray for me, no matter what I do
[2:26] Speaker 4: like it will never be you know for me Marissa,
[2:29] Speaker 4: and you know what I mean, I don't know.
[2:30] Speaker 1: Well, speaking of yes, we have to go back to
[2:34] Speaker 1: the beginning.
[2:35] Speaker 2: Let's go take us back.
[2:36] Speaker 1: You're still in it now, but yeah.
[2:38] Speaker 4: We're going to get it's always right, It's always life.
[2:45] Speaker 3: No.
[2:45] Speaker 4: I literally like mark date like I can mark times
[2:48] Speaker 4: and dates and like what what I was doing with
[2:50] Speaker 4: hairspray at that time?
[2:52] Speaker 3: Like it's so crazy.
[2:54] Speaker 1: So I mean dig us back to earlier like cre Hairspray?
[3:01] Speaker 1: When you got your audition, did you go to an
[3:03] Speaker 1: open call? Did you get like an agent's call? Like
[3:05] Speaker 1: what was what was that?
[3:07] Speaker 6: No?
[3:07] Speaker 4: I was like the crazy person who literally I was
[3:11] Speaker 4: I did Greece on Broadway for four years. I was
[3:14] Speaker 4: in Greece on Broadway for four Like I would like
[3:16] Speaker 4: the person who was like I was like nineteen me
[3:18] Speaker 4: and Sutton Foster.
[3:19] Speaker 3: And we're like we're not relieving, like we.
[3:20] Speaker 4: Were the understudies and then we moved and then like
[3:23] Speaker 4: and then like we like could you imagine? Like and
[3:25] Speaker 4: I know I always like make this joke, but it's
[3:27] Speaker 4: like if you have Marissa Winoca and Sutton Foster as
[3:30] Speaker 4: your understudies, You're like those is like not like that's
[3:33] Speaker 4: an insane understudies situation, right, Like that show is insane,
[3:37] Speaker 4: like not that, Like both of us were waiting to
[3:39] Speaker 4: push people down the stairs, but we also were like
[3:41] Speaker 4: waited to push people down.
[3:42] Speaker 3: The stairs, you know what I mean.
[3:43] Speaker 4: I mean, I'm not gonna speak for Ston. She's probably
[3:45] Speaker 4: a much better person than I am. But I was
[3:47] Speaker 4: like waiting for the girl to just take a day
[3:50] Speaker 4: off so like I could go on, you know, yes,
[3:52] Speaker 4: Like I was like, when I go on, they're gonna
[3:54] Speaker 4: know that I'm the best jam ever, Like who cares
[3:58] Speaker 4: about jan So But then I moved into the role
[4:01] Speaker 4: and I stayed in that show for four years, like
[4:03] Speaker 4: I was never going to wow. And then and Lucy Lawless,
[4:08] Speaker 4: who Zena was like in Greece with us, and she.
[4:12] Speaker 3: Was getting married.
[4:13] Speaker 4: So when she got married in California, I was like,
[4:15] Speaker 4: I'd never been to the West Coast, so I was like,
[4:17] Speaker 4: cause I'm just you know, New Yorker born and raised
[4:20] Speaker 4: like never really like my parents, like we would travel
[4:22] Speaker 4: to like Amsterdam amper holiday, but we would never like
[4:26] Speaker 4: go any place sunny, like they were like it was
[4:28] Speaker 4: always educational grown up now, I'm like that's so much cooler.
[4:32] Speaker 4: But as a kid, you're like, I just want to
[4:33] Speaker 4: go to like Bahama.
[4:38] Speaker 3: Never went to Disney World, never Disneyland.
[4:40] Speaker 4: Like my parents only like we would like get a cheap,
[4:43] Speaker 4: you know, cheap ticket to wherever in Europe and I'd
[4:45] Speaker 4: be like, oh, another museum. Lucy got married in California
[4:52] Speaker 4: in March of ninety eight and I literally went out
[4:57] Speaker 4: for her wedding and was like, oh my gosh, like
[5:00] Speaker 4: I didn't even understand TV or film, like I had
[5:03] Speaker 4: no like I just wanted to do Broadway. And I
[5:05] Speaker 4: lied to my agent, my like Broadway agent, and was like,
[5:08] Speaker 4: maybe I'm want to do TV and film just because
[5:10] Speaker 4: I was like in California for three weeks on board
[5:13] Speaker 4: and I like booked stuff like what like immediately booked.
[5:17] Speaker 3: I think it was like, you.
[5:19] Speaker 4: Know, well, also there was like when when I tell you,
[5:22] Speaker 4: like when you go back to ninety eight, there was
[5:25] Speaker 4: not a chubby character, like there was like five of us,
[5:28] Speaker 4: Like there was none like now it's like the Internet,
[5:31] Speaker 4: Like now it's like every single person can work any
[5:33] Speaker 4: shape in any size, which is so much better. But
[5:36] Speaker 4: it was not better for me at that time. At
[5:37] Speaker 4: that time, it was better that nobody else could work
[5:40] Speaker 4: but me and I like, I think my first movie.
[5:44] Speaker 3: Was Teaching Missus Tingle.
[5:46] Speaker 4: And because I got like a crazy one line in
[5:50] Speaker 4: the movie, I had to be in like Helen Nearn's
[5:52] Speaker 4: like class like for like three weeks, and honestly, you guys,
[5:55] Speaker 4: I was like this is I remember calling my mom
[5:57] Speaker 4: and just because I'd never seen craft service before and
[6:00] Speaker 4: I was like, I was like, this is a bar
[6:03] Speaker 4: mitzvah every day, Like there's so much food. I'm like,
[6:07] Speaker 4: I'm never leaving Los Angeles. I was like I couldn't believe,
[6:11] Speaker 4: but not because like I'm Broadway. You know, it's like
[6:13] Speaker 4: on Broadway you get like on Sunday, somebody brings bagels,
[6:16] Speaker 4: but like one Sunday it's your turn. You know, nothing's free.
[6:20] Speaker 4: And I lived in and in the LA I mean
[6:22] Speaker 4: in New York. I lived in a three bedroom with
[6:25] Speaker 4: four people. I was starring on Broadway, and then I
[6:28] Speaker 4: moved to LA and I was like in my own
[6:30] Speaker 4: apartment for like for free and bar mitzvah every day
[6:34] Speaker 4: of food and I would like take the like tray
[6:36] Speaker 4: of food and then I'd be like, oh, I'm just
[6:38] Speaker 4: taking this for later for dinner to take home. Yes,
[6:42] Speaker 4: I've never seen anything like at Covid ruined that bar
[6:44] Speaker 4: mitzvah just let me tell you. But yeah, But so
[6:47] Speaker 4: I started working in TV and Philmon was like, I'm
[6:50] Speaker 4: never going back. I made my brother shit me by
[6:53] Speaker 4: my New York apartment. I know this is going to
[6:55] Speaker 4: get to Harrispy.
[6:55] Speaker 3: Sorry, I'm not.
[6:57] Speaker 2: This is what you're here for. This is great.
[7:00] Speaker 1: We're recounting.
[7:01] Speaker 2: I like to know the long story.
[7:04] Speaker 3: Yeah, I like bic worts are so long. I'm sorry.
[7:08] Speaker 3: So I literally did so.
[7:10] Speaker 4: Then I bought American Beauty and I was an American
[7:12] Speaker 4: Beauty for like I had literally like two days of
[7:14] Speaker 4: work on American Beauty.
[7:15] Speaker 3: But like my dad but like but like my line.
[7:20] Speaker 4: Was like and then that was in the Oscars like
[7:23] Speaker 4: that clip, like I was the Oscar clip and like
[7:26] Speaker 4: my face was like on the I still have it,
[7:28] Speaker 4: like on the cover of Variety and I'd done one
[7:30] Speaker 4: line and I was like, well, I meant to be
[7:32] Speaker 4: a star, Like I was so oblip, Like I was
[7:36] Speaker 4: just like showing up. Like my friends at that time
[7:39] Speaker 4: were like They're like, there's a Vanity Fair party and
[7:41] Speaker 4: I'm like, well, I'm in the movie, and I would
[7:42] Speaker 4: just show up. I was so young, and I would
[7:45] Speaker 4: just show up at the parties, like dressed totally to
[7:47] Speaker 4: the nines with like ros I always wore like roses
[7:49] Speaker 4: in my hair for American Beauty and like people still.
[7:52] Speaker 3: Talk about it.
[7:52] Speaker 4: They're like, there's this one guy, Chip who like would
[7:54] Speaker 4: be like the guy who would like let people in
[7:57] Speaker 4: or out at like because he worked for DreamWorks at
[7:59] Speaker 4: the time, and he would just like laugh. Because I
[8:01] Speaker 4: was so young and naive that I just thought, like
[8:04] Speaker 4: I have a line in the movie. I should be
[8:05] Speaker 4: at the parties and they'd like let me in everywhere,
[8:08] Speaker 4: you know, like like and then they started just inviting
[8:11] Speaker 4: me because they didn't know, like they didn't know what
[8:12] Speaker 4: to do with me, because I would just show like
[8:15] Speaker 4: now if I'm even if I'm in a TV show, now,
[8:17] Speaker 4: I'd like barely go to the wrap party because I'm like, oh,
[8:19] Speaker 4: I was just thinking, oh my god, it was just
[8:20] Speaker 4: referring guest star, like nobody even knows I'm made it, like,
[8:23] Speaker 4: but like twenty two, I was like I'm the star.
[8:26] Speaker 6: You know.
[8:28] Speaker 3: It was so crazy, So you know.
[8:30] Speaker 4: I was in American Beauty and Robbie Marshall, who was
[8:34] Speaker 4: directing Hairspray at the time, was friends with Dan Jinks,
[8:37] Speaker 4: who was like my main producer on American Beauty, and
[8:39] Speaker 4: he was like and he was. They were just at
[8:42] Speaker 4: dinner or talking and they were like, I about about
[8:44] Speaker 4: doing Hairspray the musical, and Robbie Marshall was like, but
[8:47] Speaker 4: we're never going to find that girl, you know, and
[8:50] Speaker 4: Dan James, who was my main producer, was like, there
[8:53] Speaker 4: was this girl who we just shot America like because
[8:55] Speaker 4: we had it hadn't come out yet, but just ind
[8:57] Speaker 4: in American Beauty, and like I'm telling you, like I
[8:59] Speaker 4: remember her talking about being on Broadway, so I think
[9:01] Speaker 4: she must be able to sing like she's literally Tracy Turnblatt.
[9:05] Speaker 4: And so then I remember the phone rang and it
[9:09] Speaker 4: said dream Works.
[9:10] Speaker 3: And this is how crazy I am, you guys.
[9:13] Speaker 4: It's the caller Idea said DreamWorks, and I literally was like,
[9:16] Speaker 4: oh my god, they're writing an entire movie for that girl,
[9:20] Speaker 4: Like I in my mind and I remember it happening
[9:24] Speaker 4: like like it was young.
[9:25] Speaker 3: I remember that more.
[9:26] Speaker 4: Than my son's birth, Like that's how much I remember,
[9:28] Speaker 4: Like seeing DreamWorks come up on my collar idea and
[9:31] Speaker 4: I'm like, oh my god, the mister Smiley's Girls is
[9:33] Speaker 4: getting an entire movie.
[9:35] Speaker 3: Like that's how how crazy?
[9:37] Speaker 4: I was, right, So I literally picked up and I'm
[9:40] Speaker 4: like h hmm, like all excited, like they're going to
[9:42] Speaker 4: offer me like my own movie, like you know, Al's
[9:44] Speaker 4: Ball is going to write me this feature about working
[9:48] Speaker 4: at mister Smiley's you know counter And they.
[9:50] Speaker 1: Were like, honestly good, yeah, yeah, I.
[9:54] Speaker 3: Mean I would watch that movie. I think I think
[9:56] Speaker 3: we should I think that girl still works there. We
[9:58] Speaker 3: should write it right now, let's do.
[10:02] Speaker 4: And they basically he was like, I want I want
[10:06] Speaker 4: to introduce you to Robbie Marshall. I want you to an
[10:08] Speaker 4: audition for this. And I was like, oh, a musical,
[10:11] Speaker 4: Like I was so bummed.
[10:12] Speaker 3: Yea, I know.
[10:13] Speaker 2: I was like I'm doing.
[10:15] Speaker 3: I was like Broadway.
[10:19] Speaker 4: And then so then I went over to Mark Shaman
[10:22] Speaker 4: and Scott Woman's house. They had a place in Laurel
[10:24] Speaker 4: Canyon up the hill. I was the first person to
[10:28] Speaker 4: even meet on the musical like this is ninety nine,
[10:33] Speaker 4: nineteen ninety nine, and I walked up the stairs and
[10:35] Speaker 4: I was like, I didn't do my you know, we didn't.
[10:38] Speaker 4: I didn't listen. I'm old, so like there was no
[10:40] Speaker 4: research to be done. I don't really have internet. I
[10:42] Speaker 4: wasn't like now, we're like we have an audition now,
[10:44] Speaker 4: and you're like every research, You're like, I know everybody
[10:46] Speaker 4: in the room. I know every I was like who
[10:48] Speaker 4: are they? And I'm like walking in the house and
[10:51] Speaker 4: there's like all the movie posters that Mark had scored,
[10:53] Speaker 4: and then there was like south Park big, you know, big,
[10:56] Speaker 4: bigger and uncut, and I.
[10:57] Speaker 3: Was like, you guys did steut. I was like, you
[10:59] Speaker 3: did south Park?
[11:00] Speaker 4: And I was like freaking out about the south Park
[11:03] Speaker 4: the musical movie, you know. And then I sang for
[11:05] Speaker 4: them and they were like, listen, we want you to
[11:07] Speaker 4: come do the reading, but you're probably not going to
[11:09] Speaker 4: do the role because we're gonna do we don't have
[11:11] Speaker 4: time to do more auditions. We're going to do more
[11:13] Speaker 4: auditions as we get and they did. I mean they
[11:15] Speaker 4: did auditions for the two years that I did the
[11:18] Speaker 4: readings for Hairspray. They were doing auditions like there would
[11:21] Speaker 4: literally be like auditions in the like other studio wall.
[11:24] Speaker 3: We're working down on.
[11:26] Speaker 4: It literally and they would be like like literally, I
[11:28] Speaker 4: remember walking out once and they're like, are you Tracy
[11:30] Speaker 4: Turnblack come to.
[11:31] Speaker 7: The audition, and I'm like, guys, here they didn't know
[11:36] Speaker 7: that they had someone who was an understudy that had
[11:39] Speaker 7: been waiting in the wings and knew how to make
[11:41] Speaker 7: sure no one took their job.
[11:43] Speaker 4: I made I knew well, I didn't let my understudy
[11:45] Speaker 4: go on for a really long time.
[11:49] Speaker 3: And then when they did the.
[11:50] Speaker 4: Show after I did it for a year in LA
[11:53] Speaker 4: or New York, and then they brought it to LA
[11:54] Speaker 4: in like two thousand and four, I was like, I'm
[11:56] Speaker 4: not letting anybody in Los Angeles know that anyone else
[11:59] Speaker 4: can play this role, because like now, like I was
[12:01] Speaker 4: in it, I was like, oh, there's like forty girls
[12:03] Speaker 4: that can play this role today. You know, like once
[12:05] Speaker 4: you're in it, you like know you're like, oh, I
[12:08] Speaker 4: see Carly Gibson illis at all, Like I knows all
[12:11] Speaker 4: these girls. I'm like yeah, And I was like I'm
[12:13] Speaker 4: going to do the La Pantagious run just so that
[12:15] Speaker 4: like to keep it for like one more year, making
[12:17] Speaker 4: sure that nobody knew anyone else to be Tracy, like
[12:21] Speaker 4: like that poor girl who was on tour.
[12:23] Speaker 3: It was.
[12:23] Speaker 4: And by the way, it was the LUs at all
[12:25] Speaker 4: who was clearly is like like, first of all, like
[12:29] Speaker 4: I'm the most talented girl in the world. But I
[12:31] Speaker 4: was like, she will not play Tracy, like like I'm.
[12:35] Speaker 3: Such a psycho.
[12:36] Speaker 6: Yeah, what was the readings process?
[12:47] Speaker 2: Like, like how many readings did it go through? Because
[12:50] Speaker 2: when we talked about the musical in the movie, we
[12:53] Speaker 2: were saying, like what a tight and like perfect structure
[12:57] Speaker 2: the show is it is, and so like what was
[13:00] Speaker 2: that ironing process during the Yeah, the readings, well, yeah
[13:05] Speaker 2: we did.
[13:05] Speaker 4: We did like four proper readings. We never did like
[13:09] Speaker 4: a dance workshop. We never did like we like did.
[13:12] Speaker 4: The first one was only like act one and it
[13:14] Speaker 4: was like upstairs and Laura Bell always talks about how
[13:17] Speaker 4: like you could smell the like fish and like food
[13:21] Speaker 4: brewing on it was like an old building where like
[13:24] Speaker 4: you can smell the restaurant coming through.
[13:26] Speaker 3: She had a much better description.
[13:28] Speaker 4: I can't, like I can't exactly remember exactly her words
[13:31] Speaker 4: because she's so much better with words than I am.
[13:33] Speaker 3: But detail words I can.
[13:36] Speaker 4: I can.
[13:36] Speaker 3: I can out.
[13:37] Speaker 4: Talk obviously anyone, but Laura can give you like details
[13:41] Speaker 4: of smells. But we did that first one and it
[13:44] Speaker 4: was only act one.
[13:45] Speaker 1: Wow.
[13:47] Speaker 3: And then we went back and did and it was
[13:48] Speaker 3: always it was always.
[13:50] Speaker 4: Me and Harvey and Dick, La Tessa and Laura Bell.
[13:54] Speaker 4: Laura Bell missed one of the readings, but it was
[13:57] Speaker 4: because she like was worth you know, on a soap
[13:59] Speaker 4: oper or something, but was back. But like after the
[14:02] Speaker 4: third reading, that's when uh, Robbie Marshall left to go
[14:07] Speaker 4: do Chicago, that flop of a movie he like went
[14:12] Speaker 4: off to do Chicago. And so that's when Jerry and
[14:14] Speaker 4: Jack came in. And when Jerry Mitchell and Jack O'Brien
[14:17] Speaker 4: came in, we were all like, we're all gonna lose
[14:19] Speaker 4: our jobs because everybody knows like directors like to bring
[14:23] Speaker 4: in their like like like to have their own cast,
[14:25] Speaker 4: Like they don't want to just take someone else's cast.
[14:27] Speaker 3: That's not their like way, you know. So the end
[14:31] Speaker 3: they so the fourth reading was.
[14:33] Speaker 4: Under like the guise of like everybody knew, like we're
[14:36] Speaker 4: never going like this is to like get the money
[14:38] Speaker 4: from the producers, but like none of us were going
[14:40] Speaker 4: to make it. And thankfully, thank god, like they didn't
[14:45] Speaker 4: have like the egos that a lot of directors and
[14:47] Speaker 4: choreographers have like thank god they knew they saw the
[14:49] Speaker 4: magic in the room of like Harvey and me and Dick.
[14:52] Speaker 4: And then that was the time that uh Cory Reynolds,
[14:55] Speaker 4: who was our seaweed, it was his first time doing
[14:58] Speaker 4: like he had just moved from under like you know,
[15:02] Speaker 4: ensemble boy to that role because they didn't like somebody
[15:04] Speaker 4: felt like the guy fell out or something.
[15:06] Speaker 3: And then he stayed, Laura stayed.
[15:09] Speaker 4: Harry Butler, that's when Carry Butler came in and like
[15:12] Speaker 4: we never had a care like they were at one
[15:13] Speaker 4: point talking they were like do we even need Penny
[15:16] Speaker 4: because like they couldn't find a girl to play Penny,
[15:18] Speaker 4: Like it was such a crazy like people.
[15:21] Speaker 3: Just kept not it just kept not working.
[15:23] Speaker 4: Yeah, and then Carrie, of course Harry Butler is like,
[15:25] Speaker 4: so such a dream, such a dream and totally and
[15:29] Speaker 4: so then she stayed, and then a lot of the
[15:31] Speaker 4: ensemble people came in and stayed.
[15:33] Speaker 3: So that was that was like the best.
[15:35] Speaker 4: So that was the fourth one, and then like three
[15:37] Speaker 4: months later we started the like real like okay, now
[15:40] Speaker 4: we're in it. But by then they had raised all
[15:42] Speaker 4: the money because the music, like you guys the music
[15:45] Speaker 4: is so ridiculous. It still is, like yeah, browing on
[15:48] Speaker 4: it now again, I'm like, oh my god, it's all
[15:50] Speaker 4: so much music.
[15:51] Speaker 2: I always how much did the music change, if at all, from.
[15:56] Speaker 4: Like hardly any isn't that crazy? Like the music like
[15:59] Speaker 4: it literally good Morning Baltimore. Like I have a demo
[16:02] Speaker 4: of Annie Golden singing good Morning Baltimore and like Nathan
[16:07] Speaker 4: Lane in like for Mark just to like play it
[16:09] Speaker 4: out and Nathan Lane doing Timeless and like them just
[16:12] Speaker 4: like and Mark Shaman singing Timeless, but like like the
[16:15] Speaker 4: demos are like good Morning Baltimore. I mean, now, look,
[16:19] Speaker 4: I'm sure like Mark and Scott would say some of
[16:21] Speaker 4: it changed, but in my ears it didn't change.
[16:23] Speaker 3: So for sure it might have.
[16:25] Speaker 2: Changed some orchestra change, but like like I.
[16:29] Speaker 4: Feel like it was the third reading they have that
[16:32] Speaker 4: like the meeting, and they were like, Tracy needs and.
[16:34] Speaker 3: I want song. Good Morning Baltimore isn't the I want song.
[16:37] Speaker 4: So then they wrote I Can get the Bells, which
[16:39] Speaker 4: is like as an actress for I'm like definitely an actress,
[16:42] Speaker 4: but I like act like a singer and dancer, like
[16:44] Speaker 4: that's my like mych stick. I'm like I can act
[16:47] Speaker 4: like anything, but but I'm definitely.
[16:48] Speaker 3: A more of an actress.
[16:50] Speaker 4: But like I can act, like I can dance, I
[16:52] Speaker 4: can act, like I can sing, but but Bells for
[16:55] Speaker 4: me is like the most like perfect storytelling song and
[16:59] Speaker 4: like it to like root for Tracy and you know.
[17:02] Speaker 3: But there was a time.
[17:04] Speaker 4: When Margot Lyon, who's passed away now and the most
[17:08] Speaker 4: one of my mentors and best producer ever, she decided
[17:11] Speaker 4: that I know where I've been in act too, like
[17:13] Speaker 4: the big the most important song in the whole show,
[17:16] Speaker 4: what the whole show is about, I know where I've been.
[17:19] Speaker 4: She was like, it's too depressing, and then they made
[17:21] Speaker 4: like an up tempo song. And then there's like a
[17:23] Speaker 4: whole lore of like Mark Shaman being like, I'm not, like,
[17:28] Speaker 4: we're not doing the show if if I know where
[17:30] Speaker 4: I've been, isn't in the show, and he like fought
[17:33] Speaker 4: and thought, I remember them fighting in Seattle when we
[17:35] Speaker 4: were out of town about it, and then don't I
[17:39] Speaker 4: don't I honestly think it was.
[17:40] Speaker 3: I mean, and this is me just telling Laura.
[17:42] Speaker 4: I don't know exactly what the truth like at the
[17:45] Speaker 4: twenty some years ago, but I feel like it was
[17:47] Speaker 4: that like Shaman and Scott Whitman Mark Shaman's that women
[17:50] Speaker 4: were like, we're not doing the show of this song
[17:53] Speaker 4: doesn't stay in kind of thing. And Margo afterwards were like,
[17:56] Speaker 4: you were right, this was the most important song in
[17:59] Speaker 4: the show.
[17:59] Speaker 3: You know, but I know that the mother daughter, like.
[18:03] Speaker 4: I know that Velma song Baltimore Crabs changed a lot,
[18:06] Speaker 4: but again like not that much.
[18:09] Speaker 3: You can see you can't stop the beat.
[18:10] Speaker 1: But how many musicals do you now workshop where you
[18:13] Speaker 1: see that go through the thousands of songs that get put,
[18:17] Speaker 1: you know, in the garbage and get replaced with something
[18:20] Speaker 1: else for this musical, but it's basically an opera, but
[18:26] Speaker 1: you basically have an opera and it is Yeah, not
[18:29] Speaker 1: a lot changed. That's crazy.
[18:30] Speaker 3: It's they just crazy.
[18:32] Speaker 4: They It was like they're so I mean, market Scott
[18:35] Speaker 4: are so good and what's crazy is now like directing
[18:39] Speaker 4: it Like I don't think I realized just how much
[18:44] Speaker 4: like the talking is literally just getting us into the
[18:47] Speaker 4: next song. And I and I think because I was traded,
[18:50] Speaker 4: like because in my mind maybe because I was Tracy
[18:52] Speaker 4: and I'm the one who does most of the talking
[18:55] Speaker 4: and then people like come in it's not.
[18:57] Speaker 3: It really wasn't until directing it now that I'm like,
[19:01] Speaker 3: oh oh oh there's Oh.
[19:03] Speaker 4: Thank god, I have the most amazing choreographer with me,
[19:05] Speaker 4: because I'm like, Okay, go do the chore and I'm
[19:09] Speaker 4: literally just sitting there for like two hours, like I
[19:11] Speaker 4: have nothing to do because I'm literally just waiting for
[19:13] Speaker 4: the number to be choreographed.
[19:15] Speaker 3: Because it's like, wow, that's all.
[19:17] Speaker 4: Numbers and it's everybody, like it's a cast of like
[19:19] Speaker 4: twenty eight people and everybody's in everything.
[19:22] Speaker 3: You know, It's like it's crazy. Yeah.
[19:24] Speaker 2: We just talked to Adam Shankman, who directed the movie. Yeah,
[19:27] Speaker 2: and he said the exact same thing, and I like watching,
[19:31] Speaker 2: like watching the movie, I didn't even assarily did he.
[19:33] Speaker 3: Choreographed the movie as well? Yeah, like he did.
[19:36] Speaker 1: Well, he had choreographed the whole thing before they started,
[19:40] Speaker 1: and that way he wasn't waiting like you because it
[19:43] Speaker 1: is so music heavy with the ensemble. It's crazy.
[19:48] Speaker 4: It's so it's so every it's like a banger after banger,
[19:52] Speaker 4: and it's funny because you're like after Baltimore, You're like, well, Okay,
[19:55] Speaker 4: that's the best number ever, and then you're like wait,
[19:56] Speaker 4: we're following up that with nicest kids in town. That's
[19:59] Speaker 4: the next number that's not even like the big number.
[20:02] Speaker 4: And then you're like, oh my god, and I'm Niceana.
[20:04] Speaker 3: Now it goes right in.
[20:05] Speaker 4: And then you're like, oh my god. And now we're
[20:06] Speaker 4: at sixties, and now we're it was like mama and
[20:07] Speaker 4: a big girl. Now then sixties. Then you're like literally
[20:10] Speaker 4: run until that and you're like, oh my god, and
[20:12] Speaker 4: a big blond and beautiful, and you're like one is over.
[20:14] Speaker 3: And you're like nobody said anything.
[20:18] Speaker 4: Moving, Like I'm like, oh my gosh, I'm like, hey,
[20:20] Speaker 4: can I poel you guys for seen? Then I'll be
[20:22] Speaker 4: like here's a half a page. Okay, that's you're blocking, great,
[20:26] Speaker 4: go back to Clarice. Like I'm like, this is crazy.
[20:29] Speaker 2: But it's crazy that it works. So you get the
[20:32] Speaker 2: full story. You feel like you know every character, every
[20:36] Speaker 2: character's intention, what they all add to the group. And
[20:38] Speaker 2: yet there's it's so efficient and all music really.
[20:42] Speaker 1: Does move the story. There's a lot of musicals you're like, right,
[20:45] Speaker 1: there's nowhere else to go but to sing, but like
[20:48] Speaker 1: this moves the story in such a beautiful way, and
[20:52] Speaker 1: like that's the thing with like TV, uh, you know,
[20:55] Speaker 1: musical TV shows that you kind of run into where
[20:58] Speaker 1: you're like, right, stuck this one in because you know whatever,
[21:02] Speaker 1: they like the song. But like Hairspray, it's just it's perfect,
[21:05] Speaker 1: it's perfect. The film was perfect, this age person's perfect.
[21:08] Speaker 3: It's perfect. It's perfectly perfect.
[21:12] Speaker 4: And so it's like it just never it's it doesn't stop,
[21:17] Speaker 4: like I just don't understand it. Like it's funny because
[21:19] Speaker 4: like when I actually feel like being in it is
[21:22] Speaker 4: less exhausting than directing it because I'm just like staring
[21:24] Speaker 4: at it like, oh my god, this is so exhaust
[21:27] Speaker 4: Like I'm literally like I'm so ignausted, Like you guys
[21:32] Speaker 4: are working.
[21:33] Speaker 2: So so hard.
[21:36] Speaker 1: I want to talk about the directing more too, But
[21:38] Speaker 1: I'm curious, like along the way the process of you know,
[21:42] Speaker 1: doing the readings out of town, coming to New York,
[21:46] Speaker 1: when did it hit for you that you were like,
[21:48] Speaker 1: oh this is really special or did it like when
[21:51] Speaker 1: was that moment?
[21:52] Speaker 3: Right?
[21:53] Speaker 4: Well, Like it's funny because through my journey of Hairspray,
[21:57] Speaker 4: like it's such a like and I don't want I
[21:59] Speaker 4: do not want to lie like sidebar and deep dive
[22:01] Speaker 4: into this but it's like during like between the third
[22:05] Speaker 4: reading and the fourth reading, I got cancer, so that
[22:08] Speaker 4: like I know, it's like I'm like and I talk
[22:11] Speaker 4: about it a lot, and it's like it's not boring,
[22:13] Speaker 4: but it's just like a part of my story. But
[22:15] Speaker 4: it's like between the reading three and reading four, I
[22:18] Speaker 4: got cancer. So then all of a sudden, I was like,
[22:20] Speaker 4: I was like I had done reading three and I'm like, oh,
[22:24] Speaker 4: I love this show and I love it and this
[22:26] Speaker 4: is great and this is so much fun. And I
[22:27] Speaker 4: live in Los Angeles and I fly to New York
[22:29] Speaker 4: and I do this little music hall and then I
[22:30] Speaker 4: fly home. Then I got cancer, and I was like,
[22:33] Speaker 4: oh my gosh, all my dreams, everything I want to do.
[22:37] Speaker 4: My purpose on this planet was to do musical theater,
[22:40] Speaker 4: like I grew up wanting to be ethel Mermon, like
[22:42] Speaker 4: that is all I wanted to do. Like TV and
[22:44] Speaker 4: film was like because of the bar Mitzva food right,
[22:46] Speaker 4: like it was like like you were getting paid, you
[22:48] Speaker 4: could live better.
[22:49] Speaker 2: And I was I was like, yeah, I was so.
[22:52] Speaker 4: Happy, you know, like so it was so much more
[22:55] Speaker 4: like exciting. And then all of a sudden, like I remember,
[22:58] Speaker 4: like I would be doing like treatments or MRIs and
[23:01] Speaker 4: I would like just start at the beginning of hair
[23:03] Speaker 4: Spray in my head, and I would like do the
[23:06] Speaker 4: whole show.
[23:06] Speaker 3: I would start a Good Morning Baltimore.
[23:07] Speaker 4: I would like sing the whole show in my head,
[23:09] Speaker 4: like and I'd be in there for like, you know,
[23:10] Speaker 4: sometimes three hours, sometimes four hours, like just and I
[23:13] Speaker 4: would literally just start at the show, get through the
[23:16] Speaker 4: whole show. I would like try to remember what I forgot,
[23:19] Speaker 4: you know, like I would just like in my headwork
[23:21] Speaker 4: on the show. And during that time, I really was
[23:23] Speaker 4: working with Eric Vitro on finding Tracy's voice because I
[23:26] Speaker 4: knew I couldn't sustain a turn half hour show at
[23:30] Speaker 4: my like Broadway Belting of like Jam like Jan just
[23:33] Speaker 4: who cares? When Jan, you know, in Grease Belts, You're
[23:36] Speaker 4: like she's sayings who cares? Like if I could go
[23:37] Speaker 4: in Jan with one hundred and two fever, you know
[23:40] Speaker 4: what I mean. But like I knew, I knew I
[23:42] Speaker 4: had to like fight for the role too, because they
[23:44] Speaker 4: were auditioning through all this time, and I knew I
[23:46] Speaker 4: couldn't tell anybody I had cancer because if I told anybody,
[23:49] Speaker 4: they would one.
[23:49] Speaker 3: Hundred percent replace me.
[23:51] Speaker 4: Like by the way, I like now that I am
[23:53] Speaker 4: like producing and directing, I'm like, oh yeah, I would
[23:55] Speaker 4: want one hundred percent replace that girl. If she's like, oh,
[23:58] Speaker 4: like anything like I might have have a little surgery,
[24:00] Speaker 4: I'd be like, you're relace, Like I don't have that
[24:02] Speaker 4: for it, you know, Like I totally understand, like like
[24:05] Speaker 4: my thought process was correct, but so all of a sudden,
[24:10] Speaker 4: it's it's interesting, Like it went from like, yay, I
[24:12] Speaker 4: want to do hair Spaces, I want to be a star,
[24:14] Speaker 4: to like, I need to do this show.
[24:16] Speaker 3: It literally was the thing.
[24:17] Speaker 4: That like like even talking about like it made me
[24:22] Speaker 4: like half like I had to do the show and
[24:25] Speaker 4: it was like what kept me healthy and strong and
[24:27] Speaker 4: pushing through anything I had to get through physically through,
[24:31] Speaker 4: you know, and I was like I have to get better.
[24:33] Speaker 4: My eye was on the prize and I and then
[24:35] Speaker 4: so everything like shifted. Then so by the time we
[24:38] Speaker 4: did the fourth Hairspray reading and then went into rehearsal
[24:41] Speaker 4: of it, it was like every like I had such
[24:45] Speaker 4: a deeper feeling about the show. Then it was just
[24:48] Speaker 4: like I want to be a star like Marissa before
[24:50] Speaker 4: cancer and Marissa after cancer.
[24:51] Speaker 3: Are like two very different beings.
[24:53] Speaker 4: Like the girl who showed up in American beauty parties
[24:56] Speaker 4: with like flowers in her hair because you just thought
[24:57] Speaker 4: she needed to, you know, could do that.
[24:59] Speaker 3: This this person was like, oh my gosh.
[25:02] Speaker 4: The reason that I bought the cancer in time, the
[25:05] Speaker 4: reason I was is because I meant to do this,
[25:08] Speaker 4: and I like, I'm gonna do this, you know, And
[25:12] Speaker 4: so everything became so much less about less about being
[25:17] Speaker 4: like a Broadway star and more about like living out
[25:19] Speaker 4: my dream.
[25:20] Speaker 3: Yeah you know, you know.
[25:22] Speaker 7: Yeah.
[25:23] Speaker 4: And so so when we were in Seattle, we were
[25:26] Speaker 4: out of town in Seattle, and always always we were like,
[25:29] Speaker 4: I mean, it's hair spray. Who's gonna really like are
[25:31] Speaker 4: we anyone going to really take this seriously? Like we
[25:33] Speaker 4: all were like, I mean, this is fun and the
[25:35] Speaker 4: music is amazing, but like our who knows what the
[25:38] Speaker 4: audience is going to think? You know, And like if
[25:41] Speaker 4: you link back to times two just for your audience,
[25:43] Speaker 4: like this is like we're not even a year from
[25:45] Speaker 4: September eleventh, Like we like September eleventh with two thousand
[25:49] Speaker 4: and one, so we were opening not even a We
[25:51] Speaker 4: opened like eight months later. Like it was like we
[25:53] Speaker 4: were like the first like we were like coming back
[25:56] Speaker 4: to New York in a time that New York was.
[25:58] Speaker 3: Like depressed and sad and scared. So Hairspray really was
[26:02] Speaker 3: like a lightning bolt, you know.
[26:04] Speaker 4: It was really like everything lined up in the stars
[26:06] Speaker 4: the right timing. People wanted to feel good, people cared
[26:11] Speaker 4: about what was going on in the world, but also
[26:13] Speaker 4: wanting to like laugh and have fun. So we were
[26:16] Speaker 4: in Seattle and we opening night of Seattle. I did
[26:20] Speaker 4: Good Morning Baltimore and literally, like Carrie always tells the story,
[26:24] Speaker 4: like we were literally the audience stop and jump to
[26:29] Speaker 4: its feet after just Good Morning Baltimore, and literally we
[26:32] Speaker 4: were all like, oh my god, we're in.
[26:35] Speaker 3: A hit, Like we like knew it at that exact home.
[26:38] Speaker 3: It was like, yeah it was.
[26:40] Speaker 4: And I don't really remember that because I was so
[26:43] Speaker 4: in it and just being Tracy, But Carrie and Laura
[26:46] Speaker 4: tell the story all the time like they were like
[26:48] Speaker 4: everybody was just on stage like oh my god, Like
[26:51] Speaker 4: the audience was like on its feet for like in
[26:54] Speaker 4: the first preview after Good Morning Baltimore, and like after
[26:57] Speaker 4: that it was just like go go, go, go go,
[27:00] Speaker 4: you know, so like we all knew at that moment
[27:03] Speaker 4: that it was like the most special thing any of
[27:05] Speaker 4: us had ever done and we're ever going to.
[27:07] Speaker 2: Do, you know, Oh my god, it's yeah, it's so
[27:11] Speaker 2: wow beautiful to be able to, even if you were
[27:14] Speaker 2: in it, to have other people like witnessing that moment,
[27:17] Speaker 2: because it's so hard to be present, especially when you've
[27:20] Speaker 2: done for readings or whatever it may be, you've gone cancer,
[27:24] Speaker 2: gotten through the cancer, like your journey, just to even
[27:28] Speaker 2: get to that first preview, yeah, was so intense.
[27:31] Speaker 4: And then and then like also like I mean, you
[27:34] Speaker 4: guys all know, I mean all Glee fans know the
[27:37] Speaker 4: Laura of Matt Morrison, who like literally we.
[27:40] Speaker 3: Like had a different link.
[27:42] Speaker 4: And then when we were in Seattle, like two weeks
[27:45] Speaker 4: before we opened in Seattle, that link was like I'm
[27:48] Speaker 4: leaving to go do a Spielberg movie or something. I
[27:50] Speaker 4: don't know, it was like a movie. And then literally Matt.
[27:53] Speaker 4: I was like, I think Matt is really hot. You
[27:55] Speaker 4: should make him link and they were like, honestly, they
[27:58] Speaker 4: were just trying to make me happy at that time,
[28:00] Speaker 4: because I was like a bundle of anxiety and I
[28:02] Speaker 4: was like.
[28:02] Speaker 3: I like Matt, he's hot. He's hot.
[28:05] Speaker 4: That's hot, Like it's so crazy like that always talks
[28:08] Speaker 4: about He's like Marissa literally like made them make me Link.
[28:11] Speaker 3: Like I was like, he's so hot. Look at his hair.
[28:14] Speaker 3: Isn't he cute? Like make him just being like rushy
[28:17] Speaker 3: on the chorus boy.
[28:19] Speaker 4: So then they made Matt Link for me, Like I
[28:21] Speaker 4: honestly think that was like Margot Lyon's gift to me
[28:23] Speaker 4: to be like, well, yeah, he's totally hot, so bring
[28:26] Speaker 4: him up to Link and he like nobody danced better than.
[28:28] Speaker 3: Thatt, Like no, yeah, you know.
[28:31] Speaker 4: So then like and then that's how we got John Hill,
[28:33] Speaker 4: who like came in to like be Fender Link's part.
[28:36] Speaker 3: You know. But it was like two weeks. I remember
[28:38] Speaker 3: like going out for.
[28:39] Speaker 4: Dinner with Matt in some like steakhouse, just trying to
[28:42] Speaker 4: be like, oh, we have to like know each other
[28:44] Speaker 4: now because we're about to do this show together.
[28:46] Speaker 3: You know. It's like so silly, so fun.
[28:49] Speaker 4: Yeah, and then like Matt and all of that, it's like,
[28:52] Speaker 4: you know, it's like where Matt took off from that
[28:55] Speaker 4: because of you know.
[28:57] Speaker 3: It's like so like I always say to.
[28:58] Speaker 4: People, I'm like, you never know what your job is
[29:00] Speaker 4: and your job, like just do your job because like
[29:03] Speaker 4: you don't know, you.
[29:04] Speaker 2: Know, I was just thinking about that because you know,
[29:07] Speaker 2: as naive or like as silly as it may be
[29:10] Speaker 2: to like think about yourself as the girl from American
[29:12] Speaker 2: Beauty or who like went out for a wedding and
[29:16] Speaker 2: like booked a movie or a TV role, and like
[29:20] Speaker 2: how and you know, looking back as full grown adults,
[29:23] Speaker 2: of like how insane that might have been of how
[29:25] Speaker 2: we acted in that time. But had you not done
[29:28] Speaker 2: any of those things, have you not had the gall
[29:32] Speaker 2: to show up to those parties to be your full self,
[29:36] Speaker 2: Like you would not have gotten into hairspray and had
[29:40] Speaker 2: not taken whatever journey he did to be in a
[29:43] Speaker 2: chorus boy? Yeah, you know, and like you just it's
[29:47] Speaker 2: it's very true, and it's I think you paint such
[29:51] Speaker 2: a like a clear picture of that the meaning of
[29:54] Speaker 2: like you just never ever know and also like being
[29:58] Speaker 2: good to people. It's like you when you're in a
[30:00] Speaker 2: position to like, oh, we all of a sudden need
[30:02] Speaker 2: someone to play this part.
[30:04] Speaker 3: Yeah you know he's right here.
[30:06] Speaker 4: Yeah, oh no, I feel like that's like my like
[30:09] Speaker 4: I don't know, like and I wouldn't say gift, but
[30:11] Speaker 4: my like, I feel like I'm always the person who's
[30:14] Speaker 4: like trying, always trying to like you know, and I wait,
[30:19] Speaker 4: I'm sure like that, you know you see it in
[30:20] Speaker 4: like why like you'll like you'll see a movie and
[30:22] Speaker 4: you're like, oh, I can't believe they're working together again.
[30:24] Speaker 4: But I'm always like if I'm doing like a silly
[30:27] Speaker 4: show somewhere, I'm always bringing my friends, Like I'm like,
[30:30] Speaker 4: how do my friends, Like how do we all keep
[30:33] Speaker 4: working together?
[30:33] Speaker 3: And I always tell like young kids.
[30:35] Speaker 4: Like work with people your age and have fun with
[30:37] Speaker 4: them and then all you'll all grow together, Like you
[30:40] Speaker 4: can just keep growing together. And like Laura Belle and
[30:42] Speaker 4: me and Carrie like did our like we wrote that
[30:44] Speaker 4: show Mam and Big Girl Now that we like toured
[30:47] Speaker 4: and then we did it off Broadway last year, you know,
[30:49] Speaker 4: and got a Drama Desk nomination for which we're ridiculously
[30:52] Speaker 4: proud of because we didn't even know that was a thing.
[30:55] Speaker 4: I was getting my hair colored and they were like,
[30:56] Speaker 4: we just got nominated for a drama desk.
[30:58] Speaker 3: I'm like what, cat Like I was so confused. I
[31:01] Speaker 3: would like I didn't even know that we could be
[31:03] Speaker 3: like like.
[31:04] Speaker 4: I like love doing the show with them because for
[31:07] Speaker 4: my thing, like I just love showing other like performers
[31:11] Speaker 4: and girls, even young girls out there that like And
[31:14] Speaker 4: they always make fun of me because I say this
[31:15] Speaker 4: a lot, But it's like the three of us are
[31:18] Speaker 4: like such shiny pennies, all three of us, right, Like
[31:20] Speaker 4: Laura Bell is such a.
[31:21] Speaker 3: Diva, and carry Butler is such an icon.
[31:24] Speaker 4: And then I'm you know, a lunatic, but like the
[31:27] Speaker 4: three of us together, I'm like, but you can. I'm
[31:29] Speaker 4: like showing that, like women can like support and love
[31:32] Speaker 4: each other and work together and have friendships and like
[31:36] Speaker 4: carry them through. And even though like we've all been
[31:38] Speaker 4: up for same roles and one of us gets it
[31:40] Speaker 4: and like for TV, it's crazy Laura and I have
[31:43] Speaker 4: been up for so many of the same roles, and
[31:44] Speaker 4: like for for Broadway, like Carrie's like dumb the reading and.
[31:47] Speaker 3: Laura's dumb the show, like you know what I mean.
[31:50] Speaker 4: Like and it's like, but we still are like so
[31:53] Speaker 4: supportive and love each other that I like feel like
[31:55] Speaker 4: it's so important to show that. Like it's not about
[31:58] Speaker 4: like we're not against each other. It's like obviously if
[32:01] Speaker 4: you want me or don't want Laura Bell, like it
[32:04] Speaker 4: has nothing to do with Laura Bell, or if you
[32:06] Speaker 4: want Laura Bell, like if you're hiring Carrie Butler for something,
[32:09] Speaker 4: like I was never right in for yeah you know
[32:12] Speaker 4: what I mean. And you were like, I want a type,
[32:13] Speaker 4: so you're like, here's a type. But I like love
[32:16] Speaker 4: touring with it and like showing young girls in theater,
[32:19] Speaker 4: like and I always talk about it that, like, because
[32:21] Speaker 4: theater is such a it's such a competitive sport in
[32:25] Speaker 4: a way that like tennis is like you're always up
[32:28] Speaker 4: against your best friend. Like you know, my son plays tennis,
[32:31] Speaker 4: so I'm I always think compare it to tennis.
[32:33] Speaker 2: But it's like that is a great comparison you want.
[32:36] Speaker 4: You're like, oh my gosh, I want him to win.
[32:37] Speaker 4: But then if he wins, I've got to play, you know.
[32:39] Speaker 4: It's like I want her to I want her to
[32:41] Speaker 4: get that part and death becomes her. But if she
[32:43] Speaker 4: gets that part, you know.
[32:44] Speaker 3: But like there's a room for everybody, Like there really is.
[32:47] Speaker 1: And if you understand like the business model side of things, right,
[32:51] Speaker 1: you can support each other on the other side, right,
[32:53] Speaker 1: like tennis, you know how it works. You know, when
[32:55] Speaker 1: you get on you know court, you know, all everything
[32:59] Speaker 1: goes out the window. But like right, right, yeah.
[33:03] Speaker 2: Today's not your day. Then, like there's going to be
[33:04] Speaker 2: another match, There's going to be another audition, another show.
[33:07] Speaker 4: There's going to be twenty more Broadway shows next year
[33:09] Speaker 4: exactly that are not going to that are going to
[33:12] Speaker 4: be closed in a week, you know what.
[33:14] Speaker 3: Exactly?
[33:15] Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean that takes I think just like maturity
[33:19] Speaker 2: and time working in there. And so I feel like
[33:23] Speaker 2: we talked about it a little bit earlier about you
[33:26] Speaker 2: directing another version of Hairspray, which I want to talk about,
[33:28] Speaker 2: but I also feel like you as a director, because
[33:31] Speaker 2: you have this history of that of working with your friends,
[33:35] Speaker 2: supporting people working with their friends, encouraging that that you
[33:38] Speaker 2: must I feel like you must be like a really
[33:40] Speaker 2: wonderful director for these kids, for the people coming in
[33:44] Speaker 2: to do this. So tell us about this production of
[33:45] Speaker 2: Parispury you're directing.
[33:46] Speaker 4: Well, I mean I like to I would like, I mean,
[33:49] Speaker 4: I like to think I'm awesome. Now though that I
[33:51] Speaker 4: realize how much it's about choreography and less about direction,
[33:54] Speaker 4: I'm like, oh I'm not nearly doing now. I just
[33:56] Speaker 4: feel like I'm like a line producer because I think
[34:00] Speaker 4: gizing all day long, like.
[34:01] Speaker 3: I'm like what we need in Facebook?
[34:04] Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm And also just like like figuring out the
[34:06] Speaker 4: schedule of like if we get this done today, then
[34:09] Speaker 4: we can get that done.
[34:09] Speaker 3: And who I need and who I don't need.
[34:11] Speaker 4: Like what I'm really really good at is and I'm
[34:14] Speaker 4: sure you both understand this well, is like never calling
[34:17] Speaker 4: someone in to sit, like I'm very good at like
[34:19] Speaker 4: I would.
[34:22] Speaker 2: Yes, director, people would rather have to.
[34:24] Speaker 4: Put somebody in because I should have called them in
[34:27] Speaker 4: them have someone sit there for four hours and be
[34:29] Speaker 4: like what am I doing here?
[34:30] Speaker 6: You know?
[34:30] Speaker 4: So like I'm very conscious of my call of my
[34:33] Speaker 4: schedule like that I'm very good at. I'm very good
[34:36] Speaker 4: at in hairspray, particular like being able to like bring
[34:39] Speaker 4: it back to like like I think hairspray. What's most
[34:42] Speaker 4: important about hairspray is like like I know where I've
[34:46] Speaker 4: been that number when motormouth sings that number, I I
[34:50] Speaker 4: believe that all of the pretty colors and all of
[34:53] Speaker 4: you know, the fact girl wanting to dance with the
[34:55] Speaker 4: boy is all just the trojan horse to get to
[34:58] Speaker 4: I know where I've been, right, So like I believe
[35:00] Speaker 4: the entire show is to teach the lesson of segregation
[35:04] Speaker 4: in the sixties and like, holy shit, like I know
[35:06] Speaker 4: where I've been, Like I've got I've come so far,
[35:08] Speaker 4: but we have so far to go. And of course,
[35:10] Speaker 4: in the climate we're in right now, it's like the
[35:12] Speaker 4: story is completely the same, nothing has changed, right, So
[35:16] Speaker 4: I believe that, like in the like Candy Apple of
[35:19] Speaker 4: like Tracy Turnblad with Silly Mom, really the importance of
[35:24] Speaker 4: Hairspray is getting to the story of the set of
[35:26] Speaker 4: segregation and teaching the new audiences through the comedy and
[35:31] Speaker 4: fun learning, right, That's what the story is about. So
[35:36] Speaker 4: I think that a lot of times, a lot of
[35:38] Speaker 4: a lot of companies will skate by that because it's
[35:42] Speaker 4: like hard, or they don't really know what to do,
[35:44] Speaker 4: or we're scared.
[35:45] Speaker 3: To talk about it.
[35:46] Speaker 4: And I'm not saying that I'm like leaning into it
[35:49] Speaker 4: any more than we leaned into it, but I'm definitely
[35:51] Speaker 4: not letting the company not know, like this is the
[35:54] Speaker 4: this is the important part of the show. So we
[35:57] Speaker 4: like this is like everything is up in the up
[36:00] Speaker 4: to this part of the show, or like detention when
[36:02] Speaker 4: Tracy and see we'd meet for the turry first time
[36:05] Speaker 4: and dance, and Tracy's literally like, well, why aren't you
[36:07] Speaker 4: can't we dance on the show together?
[36:09] Speaker 3: And it's she's not trying to change the world.
[36:11] Speaker 4: She's actually doesn't understand and what's so what I find
[36:15] Speaker 4: and like being able to direct it. It's like remembering
[36:18] Speaker 4: those nuances of Hairspray, like where yes where It's like,
[36:23] Speaker 4: it's not like we're not hitting you over the head
[36:25] Speaker 4: with a story.
[36:26] Speaker 3: Just trust the words and say the words.
[36:28] Speaker 4: Because Tracy doesn't mean to change the world until she
[36:33] Speaker 4: like is oh, okay, I'm changing the world because there's
[36:36] Speaker 4: something so much more beautiful about a teenage girl who
[36:41] Speaker 4: doesn't think there's anything to change.
[36:43] Speaker 3: And then it's like, oh there is. She learns and
[36:45] Speaker 3: then she's like, well, let's fix that.
[36:47] Speaker 4: Rather than like she's not a suffer jette, she's not
[36:50] Speaker 4: like she really does want to dance.
[36:53] Speaker 2: She's like, oh, this seems wrong, let's just fix it.
[36:56] Speaker 3: Like that seems wrong. How do we take that?
[36:57] Speaker 2: Okay?
[36:58] Speaker 6: You know?
[36:58] Speaker 3: Like and I love that n like the naivete.
[37:02] Speaker 4: Naivity is the word, like whatever that word is for
[37:05] Speaker 4: like a sixteen year old and I have I'm like
[37:07] Speaker 4: my son's now seventeen, and like I see it in
[37:10] Speaker 4: those kids and like that generation where they're like, well,
[37:13] Speaker 4: why don't we just fix it?
[37:15] Speaker 3: Like why are we? Why aren't we just changing things?
[37:17] Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
[37:18] Speaker 4: But not like posting a thousand posts and not quotes
[37:22] Speaker 4: after quotes after they're like, well why don't we?
[37:25] Speaker 3: Why is it like that? You know?
[37:26] Speaker 4: And I think that there's something like I tried to
[37:29] Speaker 4: go as young as I could when my cast. I
[37:30] Speaker 4: actually in this cast have a fifteen year old who's
[37:34] Speaker 4: playing Ipew, a sixteen year old who's playing Shelley, and
[37:37] Speaker 4: a twelve year old that's playing Little i Nes And
[37:39] Speaker 4: I like love having these kids in a very safe
[37:43] Speaker 4: theatrical environment, getting to work with a little older but
[37:48] Speaker 4: not like everyone's really young, really really young in my cast,
[37:52] Speaker 4: because that's when it's shown me, you know.
[37:54] Speaker 1: Yeah exactly. I'm curious, Like, because you've been so deeply
[38:06] Speaker 1: embedded in Hairspray for so long as Tracy, how do
[38:09] Speaker 1: you remove yourself from allowing her to play Tracy like
[38:14] Speaker 1: and allowing Lexi to just do what she does right, well,
[38:17] Speaker 1: do best news?
[38:18] Speaker 4: She Well, I went in like day one and I
[38:21] Speaker 4: was like, well, I'm gonna have to get her a
[38:22] Speaker 4: known on that, because that's not right, you know, Like
[38:25] Speaker 4: literally day one, I was like, well, i mean she
[38:29] Speaker 4: like that's like or like or she'll do a line
[38:31] Speaker 4: reading and I'm like, well, that's not the intention. And
[38:34] Speaker 4: then like I started realizing, I'm like, oh my god,
[38:38] Speaker 4: not realizing, but like letting, like I wasn't giving because
[38:40] Speaker 4: I'm also a person who's like if you come in
[38:43] Speaker 4: and give line readings and know it's day one, day two,
[38:45] Speaker 4: day three, people get scared to try. And I'm like, yeah,
[38:47] Speaker 4: I even keep saying to them, I'm like, I'd rather
[38:49] Speaker 4: you guys try.
[38:50] Speaker 3: Like crazy big swings.
[38:52] Speaker 4: Yeah, and then I'll and then then then be scared,
[38:55] Speaker 4: like because yeah, there's nothing worse than a timid actor
[38:57] Speaker 4: or performer, right, So, like I don't get I have
[38:59] Speaker 4: very like I really wait to give notes until every
[39:03] Speaker 4: time I've ever directed, and this in particular and this specifically,
[39:06] Speaker 4: I kind of wait until we're like running the show
[39:09] Speaker 4: unless it's like really like you're really.
[39:11] Speaker 3: Off, because I don't want to know as.
[39:14] Speaker 4: An actress, like it's intimidating because then it's now I'm
[39:16] Speaker 4: just performing for the director, and it's like, I don't
[39:18] Speaker 4: even know my lines yet, you know.
[39:20] Speaker 1: You let me figure it out.
[39:21] Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, yeah.
[39:22] Speaker 4: Like and you and usually if you hire the right
[39:26] Speaker 4: I mean, if you hire the you're you're directing, If
[39:28] Speaker 4: you hire the right actors, you're gonna get what you want.
[39:31] Speaker 3: That being said as being Tracy.
[39:32] Speaker 4: It's very hard because I'm like my ear it wants
[39:36] Speaker 4: to hear a line like for example, like like like,
[39:43] Speaker 4: oh Link, if if fate makes you throw a ball
[39:45] Speaker 4: at me today, seal it with a kiss, right, And
[39:47] Speaker 4: I did it very like, oh Nate, oh Link, you know,
[39:50] Speaker 4: oh god, if they it makes you throw a bullet
[39:53] Speaker 4: me today, seal it with a kiss.
[39:54] Speaker 3: Like very dreamy and quiet and to myself. And she's
[39:58] Speaker 3: like for got like super like if they makes you
[40:01] Speaker 3: throw a ball at me today, stealing with the kids.
[40:03] Speaker 3: And I'm like, oh my god, that's totally crazy.
[40:06] Speaker 4: But then literally i want to say like three days
[40:09] Speaker 4: then I'm like, oh my god, that's hilarious. Like what
[40:12] Speaker 4: she's doing is so funny and like it's a and
[40:15] Speaker 4: her Tracy is going through a different journey than my Tracy,
[40:18] Speaker 4: and she's so like resent in a like I'm again
[40:23] Speaker 4: like I always come at things like from a I
[40:26] Speaker 4: think through everything, like I'm such a planned actress, like
[40:29] Speaker 4: especially in musicals or plays like a TV. You know,
[40:33] Speaker 4: we're just like, oh, we just do it and hope
[40:34] Speaker 4: they got it right. But I like I flipped my
[40:37] Speaker 4: purse the same way every time, Like I'm like, I
[40:41] Speaker 4: like my mom tells me, no, my feet tell me go,
[40:43] Speaker 4: Like I know exactly what I did, you know what
[40:45] Speaker 4: I mean, Like I can do it today, yes, And
[40:48] Speaker 4: she's coming from such a like different place of like
[40:52] Speaker 4: just like like I can't even it's like honesty and
[40:57] Speaker 4: like like she's just so sweet and fun and like
[41:01] Speaker 4: and honestly like a little more like gen Z, you
[41:05] Speaker 4: know what I mean. Like she's just like much more
[41:07] Speaker 4: like like confident. And then sometimes I was like, you know,
[41:11] Speaker 4: I chose I would be like I would choose to
[41:13] Speaker 4: not hear Amber say that, because then I would feel
[41:15] Speaker 4: like I'd have to react to that. So as an actress,
[41:17] Speaker 4: I was like, if I don't hear her, I don't
[41:19] Speaker 4: have to react, and She's like, or I just don't react,
[41:21] Speaker 4: and I was like, yeah, let's try it that way,
[41:24] Speaker 4: like and I'm like, right, because you are in a
[41:26] Speaker 4: different body in a different world, coming from a different place,
[41:30] Speaker 4: and you maybe don't find that as offensive as I'm Marisa,
[41:34] Speaker 4: you know what i mean. Like so many times, like
[41:36] Speaker 4: my like Edna would say something mean to me, and
[41:38] Speaker 4: I'm like, if I hear that and understand that, I
[41:41] Speaker 4: have to respond to that, So I would like choose
[41:43] Speaker 4: to like be looking at plenty and missing it sometimes,
[41:46] Speaker 4: you know, like there were different things and I'm like,
[41:48] Speaker 4: you know what, so as Tracy, it's been like a
[41:50] Speaker 4: very interesting like everybody else, I can like, oh my god,
[41:55] Speaker 4: I'm that's hilarious.
[41:56] Speaker 3: I've never seen it like that. I love that choice.
[41:58] Speaker 4: But she's like it took me a couple of days
[41:59] Speaker 4: and now I'm like I'm obsessed with her, like just
[42:03] Speaker 4: nitivity and her like optimism in a different and just
[42:07] Speaker 4: like and she's like, well break like she's like ready
[42:10] Speaker 4: to rumble and like.
[42:12] Speaker 3: I love it.
[42:12] Speaker 4: So like it's been really like interesting being able to
[42:15] Speaker 4: be like that's it.
[42:17] Speaker 3: It's a great choice. I didn't see it that way.
[42:19] Speaker 3: That's a great choice.
[42:20] Speaker 4: Like good, like good on you, you know what I mean,
[42:21] Speaker 4: Like it's cool, it's so fun.
[42:24] Speaker 2: Wow. Yeah, it's also like a testament of how good
[42:26] Speaker 2: the show is is that people can come in in
[42:29] Speaker 2: their own bodies and experiences and love these parts in
[42:33] Speaker 2: a very different way and it still works. Yeah.
[42:36] Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
[42:37] Speaker 4: I mean it's so funny because I'm like, yeah, there's
[42:40] Speaker 4: like eighty thousand traces now the one thing that I
[42:43] Speaker 4: wanted to like make sure there was only one me.
[42:45] Speaker 4: Now I'm like, oh my god, this could be done
[42:47] Speaker 4: by like it's so beautiful. It's like, so there's so many.
[42:50] Speaker 4: And I remember doing the show and thinking, oh my god,
[42:52] Speaker 4: one day they're going to do this in high school
[42:54] Speaker 4: and like like when I was in high school, like
[42:56] Speaker 4: I wasn't getting Rizzo. I was getting like I played
[42:59] Speaker 4: jan and high school too, you.
[43:00] Speaker 3: Know what I mean.
[43:01] Speaker 4: Like, and I was like I should have been Rizzo,
[43:03] Speaker 4: like I was ten times I was. I was like
[43:06] Speaker 4: like not to be, like I was clearly a Broadway star,
[43:10] Speaker 4: Like why was I jammed?
[43:11] Speaker 3: Like ye me Rizzo?
[43:12] Speaker 7: You know?
[43:12] Speaker 3: But I wasn't Rizzo because of.
[43:14] Speaker 4: Like my body size, you know. And I remember thinking like, oh,
[43:17] Speaker 4: this is so cool. There's going to be a show
[43:19] Speaker 4: that like that girl who never gets.
[43:21] Speaker 3: To do it gets to do it.
[43:23] Speaker 4: And then here I am and I'm like, Oh, it's happening,
[43:26] Speaker 4: you know, like live in.
[43:28] Speaker 3: Color, you know what I mean, It's cool.
[43:30] Speaker 1: Yeah, this is your directorial debut, correct for like a
[43:34] Speaker 1: massive theater like this with this many people. Yeah, I've
[43:37] Speaker 1: directed a lot, like I've been directing like smaller shows
[43:42] Speaker 1: like six.
[43:43] Speaker 4: People, seven people, fun stuff at the rock. Well, everybody's
[43:47] Speaker 4: what I mean. I did John Hill's one man Show,
[43:49] Speaker 4: Ryan o Connor's one man Show.
[43:50] Speaker 3: I did Ali.
[43:51] Speaker 4: Miller's one you know when she did like I've done
[43:53] Speaker 4: a lot of that, and then I directed. My first
[43:55] Speaker 4: feature was in January, and that was like my I
[43:58] Speaker 4: was like, oh, this is what I mean.
[44:00] Speaker 3: The food's better, it's better.
[44:07] Speaker 4: So so like that's been really fun, but this is
[44:10] Speaker 4: like it was I when they asked me to do this,
[44:12] Speaker 4: I was like, well, if I ever want to direct
[44:15] Speaker 4: in big theaters, in proper houses, with big companies with yeah,
[44:20] Speaker 4: you know, with with you know, equity actors, I'm like,
[44:23] Speaker 4: this might be my this is my way in like
[44:25] Speaker 4: you don't get to do it until you do it.
[44:27] Speaker 4: And I'm like, and me doing hairspray is exciting and fun.
[44:30] Speaker 4: But then like I've already been like what what are
[44:32] Speaker 4: we going to do next year? Like like what show
[44:34] Speaker 4: can I do next year? What's on your roster next year?
[44:35] Speaker 4: So that it's like to do something that's not hairspray
[44:38] Speaker 4: but I love doing. Or then I'm also like or
[44:41] Speaker 4: do I just like Paul, every theater in America be
[44:44] Speaker 4: like put up hairspray in the you know what I mean?
[44:48] Speaker 3: Like I'm like, it's like the best move ever.
[44:51] Speaker 4: Was like like that's so much pressent, Like do you
[44:53] Speaker 4: want me to come do hairspray at your theater? And
[44:55] Speaker 4: now I have like a choreographer and a you know,
[44:57] Speaker 4: a music director. Literally take this. I can tell you
[45:00] Speaker 4: where to get the sets and the costumes. Will just
[45:02] Speaker 4: put this up and everything right Like that seems like
[45:04] Speaker 4: an idea, send an assistance. Start it off, coming, yeah,
[45:07] Speaker 4: coming with the baby, be ready to go?
[45:13] Speaker 2: Yeah, figured out?
[45:17] Speaker 3: Thanks? And you like to produce that, you guys? Start?
[45:20] Speaker 3: Can you make.
[45:24] Speaker 2: Anything?
[45:25] Speaker 3: I'll put it in every theater, in every dinner.
[45:28] Speaker 1: I got it. I've got a thing for you.
[45:30] Speaker 3: I've got it, and every town I'll bring it ed.
[45:37] Speaker 1: So funny, it's so funny.
[45:40] Speaker 4: Do you to have a Tracy I'll be the judge
[45:44] Speaker 4: of that.
[45:46] Speaker 2: I mean you opened soon. How how are you feeling
[45:48] Speaker 2: you've been October tenth.
[45:50] Speaker 3: I'm so exhausted. I've never been more tired in my life.
[45:52] Speaker 4: And I'm literally like I'm having anxiety every day about
[45:56] Speaker 4: like are they going to get it? But I'm sure
[45:58] Speaker 4: that that that's what like every direct feels I have learned,
[46:02] Speaker 4: So like I'm going to I'm going to New York
[46:04] Speaker 4: to do bat Boy because i'll uh with Alex and
[46:07] Speaker 4: carry Butler.
[46:08] Speaker 3: But so literally, I like was reading this.
[46:10] Speaker 4: I had my day off of Monday yesterday or whatever
[46:12] Speaker 4: day that was a couple of days ago, and I
[46:14] Speaker 4: was like, I'm going to read this script because I'm like,
[46:16] Speaker 4: oh my god, I'm leaving in like four weeks to
[46:18] Speaker 4: do this and I haven't read the script really. So
[46:20] Speaker 4: I read it and I was like, God, I wonder
[46:22] Speaker 4: if he wants me to do it this way or
[46:23] Speaker 4: this way? And I was like, maybe I'll call him.
[46:24] Speaker 4: And then I was like, because I'm like now doing
[46:26] Speaker 4: this with the hairspray, I'm like, Alex Timber does not
[46:29] Speaker 4: want me to call him and ask him what he
[46:31] Speaker 4: was I was like.
[46:32] Speaker 3: Because everyone with me is like should I do this
[46:34] Speaker 3: or do this? And I'm like, oh my god, just
[46:35] Speaker 3: make a choice. I don't care.
[46:37] Speaker 4: I will tell you the best lesson I have learned
[46:40] Speaker 4: as an actress. I was like, I am going to
[46:43] Speaker 4: and I'm just directing now in the theater. I was like,
[46:46] Speaker 4: I am not going to call Alex Timber and ask
[46:48] Speaker 4: him if he wants me to do it with a
[46:49] Speaker 4: Southern accent or not.
[46:50] Speaker 3: I'm gonna just show up and make a choice and
[46:52] Speaker 3: let him tell me no. I was so that was
[46:55] Speaker 3: that same.
[46:56] Speaker 4: So don't call and ask them.
[47:01] Speaker 3: That just will scare them.
[47:02] Speaker 1: Just do it. Just do it four weeks in advance,
[47:06] Speaker 1: like I'm preparing. I'm prepared. So you're very busy and
[47:11] Speaker 1: we're so appreciative. I have one more question for you.
[47:14] Speaker 1: We ask everybody who comes on the show, what is
[47:16] Speaker 1: the feeling that Glee leaves you with? Since you're not
[47:19] Speaker 1: E didn't Dukeallee, I'm gonna ask you what hair spray
[47:21] Speaker 1: leaves you with? What is the feeling that hairspray leaves
[47:23] Speaker 1: you with?
[47:24] Speaker 4: Oh my gosh, with hope and joy and just oh
[47:29] Speaker 4: my gosh. Like well, for me, it's like it gave
[47:32] Speaker 4: me my life, so it like leaves me with just
[47:34] Speaker 4: like such gratitude and like I'm so so honored to
[47:38] Speaker 4: be a part of something.
[47:40] Speaker 3: That, like I feel like I just love it so much.
[47:42] Speaker 4: But like, let me tell you, Lee left me with
[47:45] Speaker 4: a lot of stuff too. Let's be clear, Like Glee
[47:47] Speaker 4: left me with like how was I never on Glee?
[47:50] Speaker 4: And was literally literally but also like I loved Blease
[47:54] Speaker 4: so much and I was so happy that it happened.
[47:56] Speaker 3: It's like how Hairspray happened? Like I was so happy
[47:58] Speaker 3: Glee was happening.
[47:59] Speaker 4: So I can answer that one too, Like I like
[48:01] Speaker 4: I loved Glee. I thought it like changed such like
[48:04] Speaker 4: a generation, Like I like, I think that like so
[48:07] Speaker 4: many people got into musical theater because of Glee, like
[48:09] Speaker 4: so many people, like you know, like it changed so
[48:12] Speaker 4: many many people's lives and careers that I just like
[48:14] Speaker 4: I always like had such a song, like I just
[48:16] Speaker 4: love Glee. So I think they both leave me with
[48:19] Speaker 4: such joy. I mean Glee is like how was I
[48:21] Speaker 4: never on?
[48:22] Speaker 2: That?
[48:22] Speaker 3: That makes no sense?
[48:23] Speaker 1: Really is actually very confusing, Yeah, it is very confusing.
[48:26] Speaker 2: A Mat Yeah, yeah, you're like man, I created you.
[48:33] Speaker 4: No, You're just hot, Matt, you were just hot, Like
[48:36] Speaker 4: what if he like, what if he didn't have his
[48:37] Speaker 4: curly hair at the time, Like, I might not have
[48:39] Speaker 4: thought he was as hot, and then who knows.
[48:40] Speaker 3: What would have happened not even cut his hair.
[48:46] Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, that hair really has gotten him far.
[48:49] Speaker 1: No, he really has good hair privilege.
[48:51] Speaker 4: And then when he like and then when he like
[48:53] Speaker 4: cut it short, it was like also hot and like yeah,
[48:56] Speaker 4: you know what I mean, like but no his hair.
[48:58] Speaker 1: Yeah. Anyways, mad Well, we're looking out and we're thinking
