[0:06] Speaker 1: while you're there. Hey, I'm Nora Jones and today I'm
[0:08] Speaker 1: playing along with Maria Zardoya.
[0:11] Speaker 2: I'm just playing long weezy, am just playing a lone
[0:20] Speaker 2: weazy Hi.
[0:24] Speaker 1: I'm Nora Jones. Welcome to playing along and with me
[0:27] Speaker 1: as always as Sarah Oda.
[0:28] Speaker 3: Hello, Hi, I'm very excited about our guests.
[0:31] Speaker 4: Today.
[0:32] Speaker 3: We have Maria's Ardoya. She's the voice behind the Grammy
[0:35] Speaker 3: nominated band The Maria's Yes.
[0:38] Speaker 1: She has this super.
[0:39] Speaker 3: Dreamy, sort of ethereal voice that is unforgettable. It's very unique.
[0:46] Speaker 3: The Maria's put out an album Submarine in twenty twenty four,
[0:49] Speaker 3: which had themes of heartbreak and growth and rebirth, which
[0:54] Speaker 3: you touch on in the episode.
[0:55] Speaker 1: Also, she has a new solo project which we didn't
[0:58] Speaker 1: get a chance to play any music from because we
[1:01] Speaker 1: recorded this right before she was going up to record it,
[1:05] Speaker 1: but you should check it out.
[1:06] Speaker 3: Yeah, Her solo project is called Not for Radio, and
[1:09] Speaker 3: she's coming out with her debut solo album called Meltz,
[1:12] Speaker 3: which is something she recorded Upstate New York in a snowy,
[1:17] Speaker 3: isolated moment and it's about winter heartbreak.
[1:22] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[1:23] Speaker 3: She speaks about how you were one of her inspirations.
[1:26] Speaker 3: Early on. She talks about being in a band and
[1:29] Speaker 3: how that's like being in a family, and she also
[1:32] Speaker 3: sings in Spanish and English, which is super cool.
[1:34] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[1:35] Speaker 1: The music in this episode's beautiful and I'm really excited
[1:38] Speaker 1: we get to do this. We had so much fun
[1:39] Speaker 1: hanging out. She's just great. Yeah, she's my friend. Now.
[1:45] Speaker 1: I hope you love this episode as much as we do.
[1:48] Speaker 1: Here it is Maria Zardoya. Well, thanks so much for coming,
[2:01] Speaker 1: Thank you for having me. Yes, this is so nice.
[2:05] Speaker 1: I was trying to come to your Austin City Limit set,
[2:08] Speaker 1: but I missed it because it was so hard to
[2:10] Speaker 1: get around. Oh yeah, it was crazy. Yeah, there's so
[2:13] Speaker 1: many people standing in the sun.
[2:15] Speaker 4: I know.
[2:16] Speaker 1: Have you played that festival as well? I have, yeah,
[2:18] Speaker 1: but not for a long time. Maybe it's been like
[2:20] Speaker 1: fifteen years. Okay, so it was a big deal for
[2:23] Speaker 1: me too. And I'm from Texas, so oh yeah, yeah,
[2:26] Speaker 1: but you're from Georgia.
[2:28] Speaker 6: I'm from Georgia. I'm from a small town in Snowville, Georgia.
[2:31] Speaker 1: Oh wow. Yeah, it was.
[2:35] Speaker 6: I tried to explain it, like it's just a very
[2:37] Speaker 6: very small town vibe, almost like stranger things.
[2:41] Speaker 1: That's crazy.
[2:41] Speaker 6: We would just like ride our bikes everywhere. There was
[2:43] Speaker 6: a creek in our neighborhood and that sounds nice. Yeah,
[2:47] Speaker 6: it was a really amazing place to grow up. And
[2:52] Speaker 6: like in nature, we would like catch little lizards, go
[2:56] Speaker 6: to the creek and catch little crawfish and on this
[3:00] Speaker 6: with bacon.
[3:01] Speaker 1: That's what I used to do. Oh, you just thick
[3:04] Speaker 1: about Okay. We used to go fishing for craffit well,
[3:06] Speaker 1: crawdads in the in Oklahoma my grandpa parents' house. We'd
[3:11] Speaker 1: put this string around our finger and tie baconto the bottom.
[3:14] Speaker 1: Oh my god, so fun.
[3:16] Speaker 6: Wow.
[3:18] Speaker 1: So where did you grow up? I grew up in Dallas,
[3:20] Speaker 1: but my grandparents lived in Oklahoma. Nice. Well that sounds nice.
[3:24] Speaker 1: Do you visit or do you have family there?
[3:26] Speaker 6: Yeah? I still have family there in like the same
[3:28] Speaker 6: childhood home. I'm going tomorrow just fen the weekend with them.
[3:32] Speaker 1: That's great.
[3:32] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[3:33] Speaker 7: Yeah.
[3:34] Speaker 1: Well, sometimes we just like to dive in and try
[3:37] Speaker 1: a song. I know it might feel sudden, but let's great.
[3:41] Speaker 1: You want to try it, you want to dive. Let's
[3:44] Speaker 1: do it all right. I was thinking we should start
[3:47] Speaker 1: with no one noticed, perfect, Yeah, do it all right? Cool? Okay,
[3:51] Speaker 1: it breaks the seal, and then let's do it. You
[3:56] Speaker 1: want to play guitar? Great, and you just tell me
[3:59] Speaker 1: if I'm doing anything wrong.
[4:01] Speaker 6: I doubt it. Let's just yeah, let's see what happens.
[4:06] Speaker 1: Do you come in at the top on guitar? Yeah? Okay, cool?
[4:09] Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah maybe lost man made.
[4:23] Speaker 4: No one no is.
[4:28] Speaker 9: No no.
[4:34] Speaker 10: Scared kind of like it if you call me.
[4:42] Speaker 4: Sampso will be and only may have lost.
[4:47] Speaker 11: Day virtue connection. I have lost, maried, obsession, no shape.
[5:23] Speaker 9: To feed me a.
[5:29] Speaker 1: No one, but you.
[5:34] Speaker 4: W she want you.
[5:40] Speaker 11: Make the.
[5:42] Speaker 12: Kind of like it if you call me it's race.
[5:48] Speaker 12: I'm so being lonely.
[5:51] Speaker 11: Make cure me heavy virtue conviction, take good.
[6:01] Speaker 1: Session.
[6:02] Speaker 12: M Come on, don't leave me.
[6:06] Speaker 10: It can be that easy, babe.

[6:20] Speaker 4: So me console me and then I leave without a trace.
[6:25] Speaker 12: Come on, don't leave me.
[6:28] Speaker 4: It can't be that easy, babe.
[6:31] Speaker 9: If you believe me, I.
[6:33] Speaker 4: Guess I'll get on a plane.
[6:36] Speaker 12: And fly to it.
[6:37] Speaker 11: Sity exciting to see your face, so.
[6:42] Speaker 10: Me, console me, and then I leave without a trace.
[6:47] Speaker 4: Come on, don't leave me.
[6:49] Speaker 11: It can't be that easy, babe. A few believe me.
[6:55] Speaker 11: I guess I'll get on a plane, fly to it,
[6:59] Speaker 11: say exciting to see your face on me, console me,

[8:18] Speaker 9: M m mm hmmm.
[8:37] Speaker 11: Start dundantro the seegupenside the cus bed. Yes, so the same,
[9:09] Speaker 11: the sea.
[9:15] Speaker 10: Make gun soucho.
[9:24] Speaker 1: Hey, oh man, that's so fun. Thank you amazing. Thanks
[9:28] Speaker 1: for playing that with beautiful on piano. Your voice sounds
[9:32] Speaker 1: so beautiful. Thank you. Say it's so soft and like
[9:36] Speaker 1: I meant soft, texture wise, not volume wise. It came
[9:40] Speaker 1: through very clearly. I'm a quiet singer, so I feel
[9:44] Speaker 1: like we have sort of that in common. Yeah, I
[9:47] Speaker 1: feel like you taught me how to sing. That's hilarious.
[9:51] Speaker 6: I when I was first taking voice lessons, our first recital,
[9:56] Speaker 6: I say, come away with Me.
[9:57] Speaker 1: Really, Yeah, that's so funny. It's such a weird song
[10:02] Speaker 1: to have become well known because it's such a slow,
[10:06] Speaker 1: quiet song. So I'm always like tickled, you know when
[10:11] Speaker 1: people know it. No, it's beautiful. It's like, it's one
[10:14] Speaker 1: of my favorite songs. It's my go to karaoke songs.
[10:16] Speaker 1: That's so funny. That's the only song I see. Oh
[10:18] Speaker 1: that's cool. My go to karaoke song is whip It
[10:21] Speaker 1: by Devo. Oh nice, that's yeah, that's funny. So when
[10:26] Speaker 1: you were growing up, how did you get into music?
[10:29] Speaker 1: Did you have musical family.
[10:30] Speaker 6: Or I mean my dad like loved music and plays
[10:36] Speaker 6: guitar and would always like have Mariacci bands and like, yeah,
[10:42] Speaker 6: so I grew up in like a house that loved music.
[10:48] Speaker 6: But you know, my mom's a teacher and my dad's
[10:52] Speaker 6: a mechanic. So I think I just grew up like
[10:55] Speaker 6: not knowing that I could even pursue music. I think
[10:58] Speaker 6: it was just something that you know, if you want
[11:00] Speaker 6: to pursue music, you're seeing at church on Sundays.
[11:02] Speaker 1: Yeah, and that's how I learned it. Yeah.
[11:04] Speaker 6: Yeah, And I feel like that's such a great way
[11:07] Speaker 6: to learn. But yeah, and then it wasn't until a
[11:11] Speaker 6: friend of mine from Atlanta that moved to LA to
[11:14] Speaker 6: pursue music. She was like, you have to come here
[11:16] Speaker 6: if you want to pursue music. I was like, well,
[11:18] Speaker 6: I guess I'll give it a shot.
[11:20] Speaker 1: That's cool. Were you older at that point, yeah? Yeah, yeah.
[11:22] Speaker 6: And then I won a Halloween costume contest at this
[11:27] Speaker 6: job that I was working at, and I bought a
[11:29] Speaker 6: car and drove to La knowing just her, and then I.
[11:34] Speaker 1: Have to know what the costume was. So I was
[11:37] Speaker 1: working I'm a Halloween really into it.
[11:40] Speaker 6: I was working at like a creative agency, and so
[11:43] Speaker 6: I dressed it. I was like, okay, I have to
[11:45] Speaker 6: like cater to the judges.
[11:46] Speaker 1: Okay. So I was like, I'm just going to be
[11:49] Speaker 1: a target market.
[11:51] Speaker 6: So we like built a whole like wooden structure that
[11:55] Speaker 6: was a market with like fruit, and we had like
[11:58] Speaker 6: the client logos on the route and I gave them
[12:01] Speaker 6: like money that had a logo on it.
[12:03] Speaker 1: It was like very pandering. Yeah yeah, that's amazing though,
[12:07] Speaker 1: but they loved it and I won five thousand dollars.
[12:09] Speaker 1: That's crazy. I know. Wow, And then I bought a car.
[12:13] Speaker 1: Do you still dress up? I do? Okay, kid, do
[12:16] Speaker 1: you I do? But I've been really lazy after I
[12:19] Speaker 1: had kids. It sort of went all to them and
[12:22] Speaker 1: they don't want to do it. Oh it broke my heart.
[12:24] Speaker 1: This year, I got ready at like two o'clock in
[12:27] Speaker 1: the afternoon so that when my daughter got home from
[12:29] Speaker 1: school she would get excited. Huh. And then I was
[12:31] Speaker 1: ready since two o'clock in the afternoon, and nobody was excited,
[12:35] Speaker 1: so I had like makeup on for six hours before.
[12:39] Speaker 1: Oh my god, it's pretty funny. Well you keep the
[12:42] Speaker 1: spirit alive. Yeah wow. Did you grow up sugar treating?
[12:46] Speaker 10: Yeah?
[12:46] Speaker 1: Yeah, me too. Yeah. I just always loved it. Yeah
[12:49] Speaker 1: me too. It's such a fun holiday. Yeah, and I
[12:52] Speaker 1: like it because it's the beginning of the fall lot
[12:54] Speaker 1: of holidays. Yeah, yeah, exactly. So this song no one noticed.
[13:00] Speaker 1: It's on your new album and that came out last year.
[13:04] Speaker 6: Yes, okay, yeah, h it's it feels kind of like
[13:08] Speaker 6: a slow like I'm surprised that it was the one
[13:11] Speaker 6: that everybody gravitated towards. Kind of like how what you
[13:14] Speaker 6: were saying about come away with me? Because it's such
[13:16] Speaker 6: like a slow yeah, just like a slow kind of
[13:20] Speaker 6: emotional song. I had always wanted that one to, you know,
[13:24] Speaker 6: to be the one that that people noticed, and thankfully, yeah,
[13:28] Speaker 6: thankfully it was.
[13:29] Speaker 1: But it's it's got a striking opening line, you know,
[13:34] Speaker 1: it's one of those that just grabs you, thank you,
[13:36] Speaker 1: and you can kind of relate, relate to. Yeah. I
[13:40] Speaker 1: think people don't get enough credit for being open to
[13:46] Speaker 1: slow music. Yeah, I agree, you know. I mean, people
[13:49] Speaker 1: are emotional and we're all emotional creatures. So it's funny
[13:53] Speaker 1: when the music industry, you know, or labels want to
[13:58] Speaker 1: push something more single sounding, but it all ends up
[14:02] Speaker 1: sounding the same sometimes.
[14:04] Speaker 6: Yeah, and that's exactly what happened with this album. I think,
[14:08] Speaker 6: you know, understandably, like they just want to push whatever
[14:11] Speaker 6: they think is going to do the best, and so
[14:16] Speaker 6: they picked like a like a more upbeat song from
[14:19] Speaker 6: our album. It's called run Your Mouth and it's got
[14:23] Speaker 6: like a pop groove, and you know, then no one noticed.
[14:27] Speaker 6: You know, people started noticing that song, and it just
[14:30] Speaker 6: made me so happy, like for the collective consciousness of
[14:36] Speaker 6: humanity because I was like, okay, like people do like
[14:39] Speaker 6: sad songs like people do want to connect to something
[14:42] Speaker 6: like a little deeper. Obviously, people also want to dance,
[14:45] Speaker 6: but I connect more with like the slow songs and
[14:48] Speaker 6: songs that like really make me feel something and yeah,
[14:51] Speaker 6: make me feel like nostalgic and cry.
[14:54] Speaker 1: And I think if we ever stopped making sad songs
[14:57] Speaker 1: just yeah, I mean I grew up with a mixtape
[15:03] Speaker 1: that was slow and sad songs. In the other side
[15:07] Speaker 1: was songs to cry too, So yeah, I would love
[15:11] Speaker 1: to hear that mixtape. Oh yeah, it's all just sad,
[15:14] Speaker 1: slow songs. Yeah, that's like that's from my playlist too. Yeah.
[15:17] Speaker 7: I mean.
[15:19] Speaker 1: Anything that makes you feel something, yeah, right, it makes
[15:22] Speaker 1: you feel less alone, exactly, Yeah, exactly. I was. I
[15:27] Speaker 1: took my son to see Billie Eilish and I was
[15:32] Speaker 1: just like, my god, this music is so melancholy. It's crazy.
[15:35] Speaker 1: And then there's some stuff with that you can really
[15:37] Speaker 1: dance to him. It's it's awesome. But I'm like, I
[15:39] Speaker 1: love that it's made it through to people. Yeah, something
[15:43] Speaker 1: that emotional, Yeah, and just made me happy. Yeah, and
[15:47] Speaker 1: then I got really melancholy. Yeah it was nice. Yeah.
[15:53] Speaker 6: Yeah, she's she's amazing. We we had the opportunity to
[15:57] Speaker 6: open up a few shows for for her. So cool,
[16:00] Speaker 6: And the first time seeing her live was the first
[16:04] Speaker 6: like the first show that we opened for her. Oh yah,
[16:06] Speaker 6: And I felt the same, Like I like was moved
[16:09] Speaker 6: to like tears at her slower.
[16:12] Speaker 1: Songs because oh yeah, they're so beautiful, beautiful. I'm just
[16:16] Speaker 1: so happy that she's successful. Yeah, she's so good. Same
[16:20] Speaker 1: and her alone on the stage, Yeah, it made me
[16:24] Speaker 1: really kind of sad actually, but I know that was
[16:27] Speaker 1: part of the whole thing. But I loved how she
[16:29] Speaker 1: just carried the whole thing, yeah, and didn't need much.
[16:33] Speaker 1: The music was so good. Yeah, How did you like
[16:35] Speaker 1: that experience being on a stage that big? Have you
[16:40] Speaker 1: been on a lot of stages like that at this point? No?
[16:43] Speaker 1: As a band? No.
[16:44] Speaker 6: So we had a song on Bud Bunny's album, I
[16:48] Speaker 6: Don't have seen thee also insane. I know, it's amazing,
[16:52] Speaker 6: And it was like a slower song on his album too,
[16:54] Speaker 6: And and so I love that, like he like leaned
[16:58] Speaker 6: into that sort of sound. But so I had played
[17:02] Speaker 6: a few shows with him just on his tour playing
[17:06] Speaker 6: that song, and those were stadium shows.
[17:08] Speaker 1: You coming out on his yes, oking on his so
[17:10] Speaker 1: not as a whole set, correct, Yeah, oh man.
[17:13] Speaker 6: And that was my nervous system was like just it
[17:18] Speaker 6: was wrecking havoc on my nervous system because I was like,
[17:20] Speaker 6: oh my god, can I do this?
[17:22] Speaker 1: Can I not?
[17:22] Speaker 6: Two seconds before I'd go on stage, I'd be like, Okay,
[17:25] Speaker 6: I'm not gonna do this. I'm gonna walkway.
[17:26] Speaker 1: I'm gonna walk away right now.
[17:28] Speaker 6: And then he'd be like and no, you know Mdia
[17:30] Speaker 6: from the Marias, And I'm like, oh no, I have
[17:32] Speaker 6: to go on.
[17:32] Speaker 1: Stage right now.
[17:34] Speaker 6: But the second I was like up there and singing
[17:36] Speaker 6: with him, like all the nerves passed. But you know,
[17:39] Speaker 6: so I had the experience of playing on a big
[17:41] Speaker 6: stage like that, So everything since then has felt small.
[17:45] Speaker 4: You know.
[17:46] Speaker 1: When you you kind of you started big and yeah,
[17:49] Speaker 1: you're good, eighty thousand people in a stadium, I'm like, oh,
[17:53] Speaker 1: an arena, I'm good. I'm like good, I'm so good.
[17:57] Speaker 6: But it was the first time that like we as
[17:59] Speaker 6: a band and the guys had played on such a
[18:02] Speaker 6: big stage, and so we were, you know a little
[18:05] Speaker 6: bit nervous and just didn't really know what to expect.
[18:09] Speaker 6: If we would, you know, if our sound would like,
[18:12] Speaker 6: you know, be big enough for an arena, or if
[18:18] Speaker 6: our you know, if our presence would be big enough
[18:20] Speaker 6: for an arena. But thankfully, like we felt really comfortable,
[18:23] Speaker 6: and I think it helped that. So her shows were
[18:27] Speaker 6: like in the round. Yeah yeah, And so I think
[18:30] Speaker 6: that helped because you didn't just see a sea of
[18:32] Speaker 6: people in front of you.
[18:33] Speaker 1: You felt like you were a part of them. Yeah, Okay, yeah,
[18:36] Speaker 1: it felt more of like okay, yeah, yeah, like we
[18:40] Speaker 1: were all kind of in it together.
[18:41] Speaker 6: And yeah, I think that made it a lot easier
[18:46] Speaker 6: for us. But I think we like realized as a band, like, okay,
[18:49] Speaker 6: we can do arena as.
[18:50] Speaker 3: We got this.
[18:51] Speaker 1: We got this. It's funny when people try to be
[18:55] Speaker 1: some when they're not when they're playing a huge stage.
[18:58] Speaker 1: So as long as you keep a hold of who
[19:00] Speaker 1: you are totally yeah, And I thought about that watching
[19:05] Speaker 1: Billy Billy or on a first name basis, watching Billie Eilish,
[19:10] Speaker 1: I was sort of struck by how she still could
[19:15] Speaker 1: do all the intimate stuff and still carried and I
[19:18] Speaker 1: mean everybody was also really excited to be there. But
[19:21] Speaker 1: I also had never been to a pop concert before.
[19:25] Speaker 1: Oh wow, I've been to a million shows, but never
[19:27] Speaker 1: like a real pop arena show like that. I mean,
[19:32] Speaker 1: what's wrong with me? I grew up in jazz, Yeah,
[19:36] Speaker 1: so I went to a lot of jazz club shows.
[19:39] Speaker 1: But I thought it was amazing. But the whole culture
[19:45] Speaker 1: of the audience singing along, yeah, it's kind of intense. Yeah,
[19:49] Speaker 1: and I really just wanted I wanted them to be
[19:52] Speaker 1: quiet because I wanted to hear her saying she's so good.
[19:55] Speaker 1: And it was funny. Yeah, it was, but I got
[19:59] Speaker 1: it too. I get the collective energy of it is
[20:02] Speaker 1: really beautiful totally, but it was kind of funny. I
[20:06] Speaker 1: was also like shocked by it.
[20:08] Speaker 4: Yeah, were you?
[20:09] Speaker 1: Yeah, it was so loud.
[20:10] Speaker 6: Everyone was singing so loud, and I thought it was
[20:12] Speaker 6: so beautiful. But yeah, and crying and they were moved
[20:16] Speaker 6: to tears. And I remember there were a couple of
[20:19] Speaker 6: girls behind me, and you know, they were audibly just
[20:22] Speaker 6: you know, crying, and I just like put my hand
[20:26] Speaker 6: out behind me and I just like held their hand
[20:29] Speaker 6: for a second, and I just thought it was like
[20:31] Speaker 6: so beautiful because you do feel this collective energy when
[20:34] Speaker 6: everybody's singing along and like experiencing the same thing at
[20:37] Speaker 6: the same time.
[20:38] Speaker 1: It can. It can get intense because you feel everybody's
[20:42] Speaker 1: kind of emotions. Yeah, and everybody's egging each other on
[20:45] Speaker 1: yeah yeah yeah yeah.
[20:46] Speaker 6: If you cry, all cry yeah yeah, so I did
[20:49] Speaker 6: start crying, you know.
[20:50] Speaker 1: I kind of felt that too. Yeah, but that was
[20:54] Speaker 1: that was a first for me in terms of like
[20:56] Speaker 1: how loud. Yeah, how loud audience was outside? You had that? Yeah, same,
[21:03] Speaker 1: that's cool. Yeah, yeah, let's do it all right? Which
[21:08] Speaker 1: one should we do? I love when you sing in Spanish, Okay,
[21:11] Speaker 1: but I don't speak Spanish, so you're gonna have to
[21:13] Speaker 1: pronounce the song. Okay, which one are we doing? Leo? Yes, yes,
[21:18] Speaker 1: so leJOS. It means far from you, far from you.
[21:21] Speaker 1: That's beautiful. And every time I sing it, it just
[21:25] Speaker 1: reminds me. I'm the only one that's in La.
[21:27] Speaker 6: The rest of my family's in Puerto Rico and Georgia,
[21:31] Speaker 6: and so every time I sing it, I'm like, it
[21:33] Speaker 6: reminds me of my family.
[21:35] Speaker 1: Oh yeah, yeah yeah. Do you have siblings? Yeah? I
[21:39] Speaker 1: have two older brothers. Oh, the young and the girl.
[21:43] Speaker 1: Oh that's the whole thing. That is the whole thing.
[21:45] Speaker 2: What about you?
[21:46] Speaker 1: I grew up an only child, but I have a
[21:48] Speaker 1: half sister who I connected with as an adult, and
[21:50] Speaker 1: I've become pretty close, but it's not the same as
[21:53] Speaker 1: growing up together. Yeah, so being an only child, that's
[21:57] Speaker 1: the whole thing. Yeah, I feel like I had a
[22:01] Speaker 1: little piece of what that felt like.
[22:03] Speaker 6: This Christmas, I spent it with my parents and it
[22:06] Speaker 6: was just me and my mom and my dad, and
[22:09] Speaker 6: I was like, Okay, this is different, this is different.
[22:12] Speaker 1: I have a little taste of it, you know.
[22:14] Speaker 6: Yeah. My creative partner, Josh, who's in the band, he's
[22:17] Speaker 6: the drummer and producer, is an only child, and so
[22:20] Speaker 6: I told him. I was like, I feel like I
[22:22] Speaker 6: can like empathize with you a little bit, a tiny bit,
[22:26] Speaker 6: just from what I experienced on Christmas. But yeah, it's interesting.
[22:31] Speaker 3: It's a lot.
[22:32] Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, it can be a lot. Yeah. This
[22:35] Speaker 1: one's hard to sing. So I'm gonna just hope for
[22:38] Speaker 1: the best on it.
[22:39] Speaker 11: Me too.
[22:39] Speaker 1: The only thing is my Spanish is no, no brain.
[22:44] Speaker 1: I don't want to mess it up. Yeah, whatever you
[22:48] Speaker 1: feel comfortable with you if you don't want to, that's okay.
[22:50] Speaker 1: I should have learned it better in Spanish. I'm so sorry.
[22:52] Speaker 1: You're fine. I'll make it intense. Yeah, okay, cool sounds good.
[23:00] Speaker 1: M hm hm h m.

[25:50] Speaker 11: Not me.
[25:56] Speaker 4: In no mer fay. Beautiful.
[26:12] Speaker 1: But oh yeah it was pretty.
[26:14] Speaker 7: Yeah.
[26:14] Speaker 1: I loved that. That was so pretty. Oh good, Yeah,
[26:17] Speaker 1: that's beautiful. I don't know what you're saying, but it's
[26:20] Speaker 1: really beautiful.
[26:21] Speaker 6: I'm just talking about things that remind me of them,
[26:25] Speaker 6: like the cold and the night and their sad eyes
[26:28] Speaker 6: and how I slept on their chest, and just different
[26:33] Speaker 6: things that reminded me of them, and then hoping and
[26:35] Speaker 6: saying that just please don't forget about me.
[26:38] Speaker 1: Oh my god, I know, you know, because at the
[26:41] Speaker 1: end of you know.
[26:42] Speaker 6: A relationship, I think it's easy for, you know, for
[26:47] Speaker 6: people to just want to go super eternal sunshine with
[26:50] Speaker 6: it and just forget everything and want to forget about
[26:53] Speaker 6: you and you know, and that's that's a way to cope, right.
[26:59] Speaker 6: But I feel like, no matter what, I'll always hold
[27:04] Speaker 6: on to, you know, the memories, because as difficult as
[27:08] Speaker 6: a heartbreak might be, I think it makes you who
[27:11] Speaker 6: you are and you carry that with you on your next.
[27:14] Speaker 1: Relationship, like what you've learned and and and it makes you,
[27:19] Speaker 1: I think, a better person and a stronger person to remember,
[27:23] Speaker 1: you know, all the memories and moments. That's really beautiful.
[27:26] Speaker 1: It's also it's just part of your life. Yeah, that's sweet.
[27:30] Speaker 1: You've had your fair share of heartbreak. Yeah, you know,
[27:36] Speaker 1: people always want to know, oh, what's that song about?
[27:40] Speaker 1: And I'm always a little kg about it. But I
[27:44] Speaker 1: don't know how you are. But yeah, I think it's
[27:47] Speaker 1: like pretty obvious. Usually, Yeah, I'm usually if you can't
[27:51] Speaker 1: really feel the n I don't know what to do.
[27:53] Speaker 1: I'm going to explain it to you. Yeah, there was
[27:57] Speaker 1: one song.
[28:00] Speaker 6: Like drawing a blank right now, But the lyrics are
[28:02] Speaker 6: so honest, and you're talking about you know, going over
[28:06] Speaker 6: the bridge into Brooklyn and.
[28:08] Speaker 1: Oh back to Manhattan. Yes, back to me. Oh yeah
[28:11] Speaker 1: that one.
[28:12] Speaker 6: I listened to that song and it's just like the lyrics.
[28:17] Speaker 6: I was like, how did she how like she's inside
[28:20] Speaker 6: my brain? Like how or how are we living the
[28:23] Speaker 6: same experience?
[28:24] Speaker 1: You know?
[28:25] Speaker 6: And and that's beautiful because it's like, no matter like
[28:30] Speaker 6: how personal or what the song is to you, other
[28:32] Speaker 6: people are gonna you know, relate to it as if
[28:35] Speaker 6: you know, I mean, we're human, like we we go
[28:37] Speaker 6: through the same and similar experiences and.
[28:40] Speaker 1: Over and over over and over. Right, So that song
[28:44] Speaker 1: most recently spoke to me. Wow, I haven't done that
[28:48] Speaker 1: on a long time. It's pretty so beautiful. Yeah, it's
[28:51] Speaker 1: it's interesting because I, yeah, I always I don't want
[28:54] Speaker 1: to overexplain songs because I like that the people can
[28:57] Speaker 1: take them and make them their own when listening, and
[29:00] Speaker 1: I don't want to be like this detail And then
[29:02] Speaker 1: they're like what, yeah, you know, yeah, so your band?
[29:07] Speaker 1: How long have you guys been together? How did it start?
[29:11] Speaker 1: I think it started is seven years ago I end
[29:15] Speaker 1: of twenty sixteen. That's a long time.
[29:17] Speaker 6: I had just moved to LA and I didn't know anyone.
[29:21] Speaker 6: I knew just that one friend that really thinking about
[29:23] Speaker 6: nobody really just that I didn't know anything about La.
[29:27] Speaker 6: The only you know, preconceived thing that I knew about
[29:31] Speaker 6: LA was, oh, it's like Hollywood. You know the stars,
[29:34] Speaker 6: and you know, when you're from a small town, that's
[29:36] Speaker 6: kind of like what you I don't know what you
[29:38] Speaker 6: think of Hollywood or Los Angeles.
[29:40] Speaker 1: But so I knew nothing.
[29:42] Speaker 6: And so when I got here, I was like, you
[29:44] Speaker 6: know what, I'm just going to play wherever they'll have me,
[29:46] Speaker 6: like me and a guitar open mics.
[29:48] Speaker 1: Like, were you writing songs already?
[29:50] Speaker 4: Yeah?
[29:50] Speaker 1: I was writing songs and performing in Georgia. How when
[29:54] Speaker 1: did you start writing?
[29:58] Speaker 10: You know, when I was.
[29:58] Speaker 6: Little, but I think songwriting like full songs, I'd say,
[30:03] Speaker 6: like just out of high school. So you know, it
[30:05] Speaker 6: wasn't it was a fairly new new thing of like
[30:10] Speaker 6: learning structurally song and the chords on the guitar and
[30:14] Speaker 6: you know, and all of that was I was seeing
[30:16] Speaker 6: a guy at the time who was a songwriter and
[30:18] Speaker 6: he kind of like just watching him craft songs kind
[30:21] Speaker 6: of helped me develop that.
[30:24] Speaker 1: But so yeah.
[30:25] Speaker 6: I came to la without knowing anything, and then I
[30:28] Speaker 6: was like, well, I'm just going to reach out to
[30:29] Speaker 6: anybody who'll have me play everywhere, and so I'd play
[30:33] Speaker 6: so many open mics, random restaurants, like just so many
[30:36] Speaker 6: random things. And one of the random gigs it was
[30:40] Speaker 6: called the Laurel Canyon Music Revival at the kid It's
[30:43] Speaker 6: Room next to Kanter's Deli, and I played a show
[30:47] Speaker 6: that night and solo solo, and the sound engineer came
[30:53] Speaker 6: up to me after same strash. He came up to
[30:56] Speaker 6: me after and was like, I love your songs and
[30:59] Speaker 6: I love your and I'd love to record with you.
[31:02] Speaker 1: I'm a producer. And I was like, well, okay, cool.
[31:05] Speaker 1: We got together and then next thing you know, we
[31:08] Speaker 1: fell in love of course, and we started the band together.
[31:13] Speaker 4: Wow.
[31:14] Speaker 6: And then when we were ready to sort of play
[31:17] Speaker 6: the songs live, we were like, okay, well let's just
[31:20] Speaker 6: kind of start a band. And so two of his
[31:23] Speaker 6: best friends and childhood friends were just always around and
[31:27] Speaker 6: we were like, do you guys want to be in
[31:29] Speaker 6: this band.
[31:29] Speaker 1: And play shows together?
[31:30] Speaker 6: And they were like yeah sure, and then it just
[31:33] Speaker 6: that's pretty magical kind of started from there that's great.
[31:36] Speaker 1: Yeah, does he play drums. He plays drums and producer
[31:40] Speaker 1: and we write the songs together. That's so cool. I
[31:42] Speaker 1: love the drums on the record. I meant I meant
[31:45] Speaker 1: to tell you that. Yeah, shout out Josh. Yeah that
[31:47] Speaker 1: sounds amazing. I like his his groove, you know.
[31:50] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[31:50] Speaker 1: Then I like the little things he adds that are different,
[31:53] Speaker 1: and it's totally.
[31:54] Speaker 6: He's such an amazing drummer and has like such amazing
[31:58] Speaker 6: taste and knows like when to play hard, knows when
[32:01] Speaker 6: to play soft.
[32:02] Speaker 1: And yeah, he's very, very talented. That's great.
[32:08] Speaker 6: But this last album was the first album that we
[32:11] Speaker 6: wrote not in a romantic relationship.
[32:14] Speaker 1: Together, the Blast second.
[32:19] Speaker 11: Yeah.
[32:19] Speaker 1: So, but we're so good. We're it's great best friends
[32:23] Speaker 1: still and it's nice when you can make it work.
[32:26] Speaker 1: It's really sad otherwise if you have a musical connection totally,
[32:30] Speaker 1: it's hard to lose that with the the everything, And it's.
[32:34] Speaker 6: Honestly made us like stronger as a band because it's
[32:36] Speaker 6: no longer Josh and Marie the couple and then the
[32:39] Speaker 6: best friends. Now it's like a collective unit where I'm
[32:43] Speaker 6: best friends with all of them now and feel comfortable
[32:46] Speaker 6: with all of them and they feel comfortable with me, and.
[32:49] Speaker 1: It just feels like more of a collective.
[32:51] Speaker 10: Now.
[32:52] Speaker 1: Well, the album's beautiful, so you yeah, and you still
[32:55] Speaker 1: wrote all the songs together. Yeah, we still wrote all
[32:57] Speaker 1: these songs together. They're not all about our breakup or
[33:01] Speaker 1: our relationship, but yeah, we read them all together. That's good.
[33:05] Speaker 1: It's weird. You must be almost like closer in a way,
[33:09] Speaker 1: writing in a writing way.
[33:11] Speaker 6: I mean we are, Yeah, we are, just because we
[33:15] Speaker 6: went through so much and you know, after we broke up,
[33:17] Speaker 6: we you know, we still wanted the band to stay together.
[33:21] Speaker 6: We just didn't know how because it had started with
[33:23] Speaker 6: us in a relationship. So we were like, well, if
[33:26] Speaker 6: we're not in a relationship, can this band work? But
[33:29] Speaker 6: we did a lot of like self work. We went
[33:31] Speaker 6: to therapy and together and as a band and individually,
[33:36] Speaker 6: and that's amazing, and just went through all the awkward
[33:40] Speaker 6: moments and just came out on the other end like
[33:45] Speaker 6: just understanding each other in like a whole new way
[33:47] Speaker 6: and appreciating each other in a whole new way.
[33:51] Speaker 1: And as friends, which is just so beautiful. That's so evolved,
[33:56] Speaker 1: you know what I mean. It's like in the seventies.
[33:59] Speaker 1: Do you think, you know, if they could have all
[34:01] Speaker 1: done that? I know, I know, you know, yeah, but
[34:05] Speaker 1: it meant I mean, you know, music was number one
[34:08] Speaker 1: for all of us, and you have such a good thing. Yeah,
[34:11] Speaker 1: you don't want to lose that totally. That's great. I'm
[34:13] Speaker 1: happy for you guys. Yeah, yeah, thank you. I think
[34:18] Speaker 1: the most fun I ever had was in my twenties
[34:21] Speaker 1: on tour with my band unit and crew, like people
[34:25] Speaker 1: I just loved, yeah and had We just had so
[34:29] Speaker 1: much fun goofing around and hitting milestones and like I
[34:33] Speaker 1: was with all these people that I really loved, and
[34:36] Speaker 1: that's a really special time.
[34:38] Speaker 3: Yeah, you know.
[34:40] Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like a traveling circus. It really is. It's
[34:43] Speaker 1: so nice and traveling with your family, Yeah, it really is.
[34:46] Speaker 1: It's fun. I definitely still have that. I try to
[34:51] Speaker 1: only tour and travel with people I want to hang out. Yeah,
[34:55] Speaker 1: scondwise a drag. Yeah, we're all so close.
[34:59] Speaker 6: Yeah you have to you have to be yeah, and
[35:02] Speaker 6: you have to love everybody that you're around, because yeah, yeah.
[35:06] Speaker 1: Do you have. You brought a lot a lot of
[35:10] Speaker 1: lovely women here today. I can say, are there any
[35:13] Speaker 1: women in your touring.
[35:15] Speaker 6: Crew as well, we have so many like amazing women,
[35:19] Speaker 6: and that was something that was really important for me
[35:22] Speaker 6: because early on in the touring days, it was just
[35:24] Speaker 6: me and the guys and their friends, and so I was,
[35:29] Speaker 6: you know, the only woman and.
[35:30] Speaker 1: It can be weird and it can be you know,
[35:32] Speaker 1: I can hang with the guys and I love it.
[35:34] Speaker 1: You get really good at yeah you do you learn
[35:37] Speaker 1: you start being the dirtiest joke telling Yeah, yeah, totally.
[35:41] Speaker 6: Yeah, but you know, they're just you know, it did
[35:45] Speaker 6: get to be a little bit lonely because it felt like, Okay,
[35:47] Speaker 6: I'm I'm here with you know, a bunch of a
[35:51] Speaker 6: group of best friends and it you know, and so
[35:53] Speaker 6: I was hanging out a lot by myself and having
[35:57] Speaker 6: a lot of these like solo experiences, and now with
[36:01] Speaker 6: so many women on our team, I just I don't know,
[36:04] Speaker 6: it's just it's like a different dynamic and I love it,
[36:07] Speaker 6: and it was really important for me.
[36:09] Speaker 1: How are your early touring days like, Well, in my
[36:11] Speaker 1: early touring days, my bass player was my boyfriend, Oh ok,
[36:16] Speaker 1: and we go. He wrote a lot of songs exactly.
[36:19] Speaker 1: He wrote a lot of songs on my first record,
[36:20] Speaker 1: and I had just gotten into songwriting, and then on
[36:23] Speaker 1: the second record, we wrote a lot of songs together
[36:25] Speaker 1: and it was amazing. It was it was really nice
[36:29] Speaker 1: having it all together. And at the time, my best
[36:33] Speaker 1: friend was in my band, a woman, and she ended
[36:38] Speaker 1: up dating the drummer, and so for a long time
[36:40] Speaker 1: it was like this crazy Fleetwood Mac. We didn't know
[36:44] Speaker 1: swet Journey, but it was just really fun. Yeah yeah,
[36:48] Speaker 1: I mean there was some stress in the beginning, but
[36:50] Speaker 1: once we kind of settled in, it was it was amazing.
[36:53] Speaker 1: We were all best friends and it all kind of imploded.
[36:57] Speaker 1: But if we had gone to therapy probably it would
[37:00] Speaker 1: have done a lot better after that. Sometimes things end
[37:04] Speaker 1: at the right time, though. Yeah, yeah, we had a
[37:06] Speaker 1: good time. I would love to do another song. Yeah, yeah,
[37:11] Speaker 1: I wanted to do Sienna. Okay, let's do Sienna. This
[37:16] Speaker 1: is a special one. This is a special one, especially
[37:20] Speaker 1: for me.
[37:22] Speaker 6: Yeah, so Sienna, this one is a special one to
[37:27] Speaker 6: play today because I shout you out.
[37:32] Speaker 1: Yea and.
[37:34] Speaker 6: Yeah, the song that I'm shouting out is come Away
[37:37] Speaker 6: with Me, which we'll play soon. But your music has
[37:43] Speaker 6: just been a part of every single romantic relationship that
[37:45] Speaker 6: I've had throughout my life.
[37:47] Speaker 1: So swim.
[37:49] Speaker 6: So I just felt the courage and the need to
[37:55] Speaker 6: to call out that song in particular because.
[37:57] Speaker 1: Its pretty cool. Yeah, getting a call out is the
[38:01] Speaker 1: highest flattery. That's awesome, all right, So I'm gonna yeah,
[38:08] Speaker 1: let's just see the intro.
[38:27] Speaker 10: Please tell me not to go. We've been here long before.
[38:40] Speaker 9: I live and do Hi leaves hello.
[38:48] Speaker 12: Always be.
[38:55] Speaker 10: A lay on your rooftop in the freezing cold, and
[39:02] Speaker 10: I'll watch the sunset.
[39:05] Speaker 12: Wearing all your clothes. I can feel you with me.
[39:12] Speaker 10: Like I did before, Like Quenna sang you a love
[39:17] Speaker 10: song by no.
[39:20] Speaker 12: A chance.
[39:24] Speaker 9: See it.
[39:25] Speaker 4: No whould have been cute?
[39:38] Speaker 12: See it.
[39:44] Speaker 10: Would look just like you.
[39:49] Speaker 12: Hi came clean, did feel so good?
[40:06] Speaker 9: Feel see only through you?
[40:19] Speaker 7: Oh wait you tomorrow outside your door like a ded
[40:27] Speaker 7: December when you held me close, coming up on your corner,
[40:36] Speaker 7: pulling out my hair. Here the creek and the floorboards,
[40:43] Speaker 7: going up the stairs. See now, who would have been cute?
[41:02] Speaker 10: See we look just like you, with a temper, like you,
[41:16] Speaker 10: running around like you, jumping.
[41:20] Speaker 9: In the pool, like you.
[41:27] Speaker 12: Sing to all her pets.
[41:30] Speaker 4: In the way I did be sense it's.
[41:37] Speaker 1: Like you.
[41:43] Speaker 12: And a smile, And I think of all the times
[41:47] Speaker 12: we had on the beach in the winter when the
[41:54] Speaker 12: waves were mad down by the water. Crystal clean see
[42:04] Speaker 12: her face in the force.
[42:07] Speaker 10: Then it disappears.
[42:14] Speaker 1: I started crying at the beginning. Sod yeah, that's amazing.
[42:19] Speaker 1: That one's fun to play together. I know, so pretty,
[42:23] Speaker 1: so pretty. I loved that. I've never heard it just
[42:26] Speaker 1: on piano. Oh yeah, special usually do guitars, right, Yeah, yeah,
[42:31] Speaker 1: it has that good thanks. I like I like doing that.
[42:36] Speaker 1: It's interesting. I was I was practicing for this, so
[42:38] Speaker 1: I was like, the drum grooves are so key and
[42:42] Speaker 1: so good. It's like, how am I going to get
[42:44] Speaker 1: the groove going?
[42:45] Speaker 12: Oh? No, you got it.
[42:46] Speaker 1: It was great.
[42:46] Speaker 6: Yeah.
[42:46] Speaker 1: I have a great group, super super fun. I love
[42:49] Speaker 1: the lyrics on this song. It's kind of heartbreaking. Yeah,
[42:53] Speaker 1: they are really heartbreaking and also kind of cutting, like
[42:57] Speaker 1: kind of like like that. I love that. It's my
[43:00] Speaker 1: favorite combo middle finger ye break yeah totally yeah.
[43:04] Speaker 12: Yeah.
[43:04] Speaker 6: I mean it's about a child that will never come
[43:09] Speaker 6: to be extra heartbreaking, extra heartbreak, but the little didn't
[43:13] Speaker 6: has that little yeah can I totally sly total tongue
[43:17] Speaker 6: in cheek.
[43:18] Speaker 10: I love that.
[43:19] Speaker 1: Thank you. Yeah, it's really beautiful. Thank you. Well now
[43:22] Speaker 1: we have to do come away with me.
[43:24] Speaker 6: We have to yeah, yes, Oh, oh my god, My,
[43:28] Speaker 6: I'm just going to say my all time favorite song.
[43:30] Speaker 1: Oh my god. It's just such a beautiful, crazy yeah,
[43:34] Speaker 1: thank you. It's kind of the first song I ever
[43:37] Speaker 1: wrote that I liked. I wrote a couple of songs
[43:41] Speaker 1: in high school that I you wrote it this in
[43:43] Speaker 1: high school? No, No, I wrote a couple of songs
[43:46] Speaker 1: I wish were performing ourts high school, and I encouraged
[43:49] Speaker 1: us to write songs, which was so cool. But I
[43:52] Speaker 1: wrote these two songs and I just we ended up
[43:54] Speaker 1: recording them because they had recording equipment, which I think
[43:58] Speaker 1: was my downfall because I didn't like how it turned out,
[44:01] Speaker 1: and I was like, I'm not a good songwriter, oh,
[44:05] Speaker 1: you know, like, because I didn't like the way it was.
[44:07] Speaker 1: And when I moved to New York, I started going
[44:10] Speaker 1: to see a bunch of singer songwriters the living room.
[44:12] Speaker 1: And I didn't have a piano, of course, because I
[44:16] Speaker 1: lived in a tiny apartment. But I had a crappy
[44:18] Speaker 1: little guitar and I knew a few chords, and so
[44:20] Speaker 1: I came back after being inspired all night seeing all
[44:24] Speaker 1: these songwriters, and I just sat in my room at
[44:26] Speaker 1: like three in the morning and I wrote come Away
[44:28] Speaker 1: with Me.
[44:29] Speaker 11: Oh.
[44:30] Speaker 1: I wrote it in a notebook with the chord changes
[44:32] Speaker 1: over it, and I wrote like one, two, three, one five,
[44:37] Speaker 1: Like I tried to notate the notes so I wouldn't
[44:39] Speaker 1: forget it because I didn't know how to remember it. Yeah,
[44:43] Speaker 1: that's that's wild. And I'm pretty sure the original version
[44:46] Speaker 1: of it was way better. But what I remembered is
[44:49] Speaker 1: what we have. Oh my god, No, But isn't that friend?
[44:52] Speaker 6: Because yeah, I'm sure the song is a little bit
[44:55] Speaker 6: different than when you first wrote it.
[44:56] Speaker 1: Probably a little different, yea.
[44:59] Speaker 6: But how amazing that you could remember it, I know,
[45:01] Speaker 6: because there are moments that you don't remember anything that. Yeah,
[45:04] Speaker 6: that that it's a fleeting song. It comes in and
[45:06] Speaker 6: out of you in like an instant. And you know,
[45:09] Speaker 6: there have been so many songs that that I'll write
[45:12] Speaker 6: and they'll be like, oh, how did that go?
[45:13] Speaker 1: And it's just gone forever now, But you know, it
[45:14] Speaker 1: was the greatest song in the world. Some songs are
[45:17] Speaker 1: just meant to be ours, Like, yeah, to be experienced
[45:19] Speaker 1: just on our own, I think, yes. But it sure
[45:23] Speaker 1: is nice when you can you can share take that
[45:25] Speaker 1: inspiration totally, totally.
[45:29] Speaker 6: Yeah, I love imagining you in like your New York apartment,
[45:33] Speaker 6: just a guitar, like in the dark, like writing this
[45:37] Speaker 6: after just listening to an amazing, amazing shows all night.
[45:41] Speaker 1: It was, you know, one of those quick ones.
[45:42] Speaker 6: Yeah, like, did you feel like you wrote it or
[45:44] Speaker 6: do you feel like it kind of like can't like
[45:49] Speaker 6: almost like you as a vessel, Like I think the.
[45:51] Speaker 1: Best ones are like that. Yeah, yeah, those are my
[45:54] Speaker 1: favorite ones. Same. It's such a weird I definitely wrote it,
[45:57] Speaker 1: but yeah, but I mean it came out of nowhere.
[46:01] Speaker 1: It came out of nowhere. But it's also just so simple.
[46:03] Speaker 1: I like simple songs yeah for that reason. Yeah, they're easy.
[46:08] Speaker 1: But it's such a beautiful song. Well, thanks for thanks
[46:11] Speaker 1: for liking it. Yeah, it makes me happy. Do you
[46:14] Speaker 1: want to do you want to trade versus? Or do
[46:16] Speaker 1: you want to sing the whole thing? No? No, no,
[46:19] Speaker 1: no no no? What do you want to? Whatever? You?
[46:22] Speaker 1: Whatever you want? Yeah, however you want to sing your song?
[46:26] Speaker 1: Why don't you just sing it and I'll harmonize on
[46:28] Speaker 1: the bridges. You want to do that? Okay, okay, okay, sure,
[46:32] Speaker 1: what do you think? Yeah, yeah, okay, okay, Cool, I
[46:35] Speaker 1: play it pretty different usually, so okay, tell me if
[46:37] Speaker 1: this feels okay, Okay, I don't know, see if you can.
[46:41] Speaker 1: You have like an little intro to it. Yeah, okay, cool,
[46:45] Speaker 1: I usually just go like wow, so pretty. Let's sing
[46:54] Speaker 1: it together. Okay, I'll do the first verse. Okay, then
[46:58] Speaker 1: you want to do the second. Yeah. Maybe I should
[46:59] Speaker 1: play guitard on it like I wrote it. Let's try.
[47:05] Speaker 1: I don't know. Maybe that way it'll be different. Yeah,
[47:08] Speaker 1: like I mean, I mean, the piano is so beautiful.
[47:11] Speaker 1: I played a lot of you know, let's try it.
[47:22] Speaker 1: The guitar sounds so good. It could be mood, but yes,
[47:25] Speaker 1: I love it. So you want me to take the
[47:28] Speaker 1: first Yeah, okay, mm hmmm.
[47:42] Speaker 5: Come away with me and the night, Come away with
[47:53] Speaker 5: me and I will.
[47:57] Speaker 1: You?
[47:59] Speaker 10: So come away with me on a post, come away
[48:17] Speaker 10: with me with a kid, uh with this and die
[48:33] Speaker 10: and walk with you.
[48:36] Speaker 11: I'm a cloudy day and fee swelly yellow grass grows me. Hi,
[48:49] Speaker 11: swun't you try to co come away with me and
[48:57] Speaker 11: kiss on a mountain?
[49:01] Speaker 12: So come away with me and never stop.
[49:12] Speaker 10: Levin you.
[49:45] Speaker 12: Die on awake up with a rain.
[49:51] Speaker 10: Fall on its in roof.
[49:56] Speaker 12: While say there in your.
[50:01] Speaker 10: So kids, beautical, come on with me in the night,
[50:18] Speaker 10: come away.
[50:21] Speaker 1: With me. That felt good. It was pretty. Yeah, you's
[50:31] Speaker 1: so pretty, so pretty. Oh my god, back to my bedroom.
[50:36] Speaker 1: I know, in the nineteen ninety nine writing this song
[50:40] Speaker 1: Wow four in the morning, Wow, sad hopeful girl, it
[50:47] Speaker 1: was like I was really writing it to no one
[50:49] Speaker 1: in particular, you know, like mister your Future Yeah, like
[50:53] Speaker 1: Prince Charmy. It was basically a song from Prince for
[50:56] Speaker 1: your future future love exactly. That's beautiful. But I like
[51:02] Speaker 1: how open you seem. Yeah. I don't find that all
[51:06] Speaker 1: people are like that musicians, And I think it's great
[51:11] Speaker 1: because you're going to find all kinds of crazy things
[51:15] Speaker 1: that way. Yeah, you're going to catch it all. You
[51:17] Speaker 1: just never know. Yeah, you never know you're going to
[51:19] Speaker 1: catch when you're just open. Yeah, yeah exactly. I think
[51:22] Speaker 1: that's cool. My favorite experiences making records have been when
[51:26] Speaker 1: I go in with almost just a few ideas but
[51:28] Speaker 1: no real songs. Yeah, and expectations.
[51:30] Speaker 7: Yeah.
[51:31] Speaker 1: I didn't learn how to do that though, until I
[51:33] Speaker 1: made that Danger Mouse record and Carly. It was a
[51:35] Speaker 1: good It was a good like maybe eight nine years
[51:37] Speaker 1: into my career. So that was one of my favorite records.
[51:41] Speaker 1: Oh thanks, I remember one of mine too.
[51:43] Speaker 6: Yeah. Like when it came out Putting Headphones on, I
[51:46] Speaker 6: was working at the creative agency I was telling you
[51:48] Speaker 6: about I was supposed to be working.
[51:50] Speaker 1: I was like, no, no, no, like, I'm listening to
[51:53] Speaker 1: music right now, sad girl music. I like, put on
[51:56] Speaker 1: my dude, not disturb or whatever. And I was like,
[51:57] Speaker 1: I'm listening to this and I it was so beautiful. Yeah,
[52:01] Speaker 1: that was an interesting record. Did you make that? We
[52:04] Speaker 1: made it in La and I had already known him.
[52:07] Speaker 1: We had done a project together where I sang on
[52:09] Speaker 1: his record called Rome, and I asked him to make
[52:12] Speaker 1: a record I made called The Fall. I had all
[52:15] Speaker 1: these songs. Was after a breakup, but the songs were
[52:19] Speaker 1: all done and I really wanted them to shine, you know,
[52:23] Speaker 1: And I asked him to make it with me, and
[52:24] Speaker 1: he said, you know, that's not really how I work.
[52:27] Speaker 1: I'd rather you come in and we just write stuff together.
[52:31] Speaker 1: That's sort of more what I'm good at and what
[52:33] Speaker 1: I like to do. And I was confused by it
[52:35] Speaker 1: at first. I didn't understand it. I was like, all right,
[52:38] Speaker 1: So I made The Fall. I did all that and
[52:40] Speaker 1: then I was like, all right, you want to try something,
[52:42] Speaker 1: So we did. So all of these songs you guys
[52:44] Speaker 1: made in the room together. Yeah, there was a couple
[52:46] Speaker 1: of snippets of ideas, but yeah.
[52:49] Speaker 6: That's yeah, that's my favorite way of making music too,
[52:52] Speaker 6: just kind of going in without and just seeing seeing
[52:56] Speaker 6: what happens.
[52:57] Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean the collaboration between two people, you have
[53:00] Speaker 1: trust and openness. This is the best. Yeah, I mean
[53:03] Speaker 1: I loved that record. I want to know more. Oh,
[53:08] Speaker 1: you know the dish, the real off my Dish now, Yes,
[53:12] Speaker 1: because I relate to a lot of those songs, like
[53:15] Speaker 1: I'm like, did we live through a similar experience? But
[53:18] Speaker 1: this is awful record. You know.
[53:21] Speaker 6: It's funny because and a lot of the recent songs
[53:24] Speaker 6: that I'm writing, you know, I think you break up
[53:27] Speaker 6: and then the real aftermath of a breakup is when
[53:29] Speaker 6: they start.
[53:29] Speaker 1: Seeing someone new.
[53:31] Speaker 5: Yeah, oh you have to deal with it.
[53:33] Speaker 1: So you have to deal with them seeing someone new.
[53:35] Speaker 6: And so a lot of the songs that I'm writing
[53:37] Speaker 6: now are from the perspective of like, you know, you're
[53:40] Speaker 6: of to the guy, like you're seeing this new person.
[53:44] Speaker 6: But I'm like, I I kind of want to write
[53:47] Speaker 6: a song to the girl. Oh yeah, and be like, hey,
[53:52] Speaker 6: maybe look out for a couple of these things mornings.
[53:56] Speaker 1: You know, that's a cool idea. Did you find into that, like.
[54:02] Speaker 6: You know, playing the songs or touring the songs like
[54:05] Speaker 6: after they were so fresh and raw?
[54:07] Speaker 1: Like how is that for you? Because you know, we
[54:10] Speaker 1: wrote the record and then immediately toured it and I
[54:13] Speaker 1: couldn't play Sienna for the first really, if you show,
[54:15] Speaker 1: I would just like break down. I was like, I
[54:17] Speaker 1: can't do this. Yeah, it was still so raw. I
[54:20] Speaker 1: could see that it was okay. I feel like it
[54:26] Speaker 1: was a big record cycle push and people kept asking
[54:31] Speaker 1: me about it and I just kept putting it to
[54:33] Speaker 1: the side and shutting down part of it. I think
[54:36] Speaker 1: at that point it had dissipated a little and I
[54:39] Speaker 1: was already seeing someone and I didn't feel as raw
[54:43] Speaker 1: about it. Yeah, but I liked the drama of it,
[54:49] Speaker 1: so I leaned into the drama because the drama was
[54:52] Speaker 1: dramatic when it was happening. But yeah, by the time
[54:55] Speaker 1: the record came out, none of that felt thick. Yeah. Yeah,
[55:00] Speaker 1: that's hard though, and also you're together doing yeah yeah yeah,
[55:05] Speaker 1: And and like I said, not all of the songs
[55:07] Speaker 1: are about you know, I was in a relationship after
[55:10] Speaker 1: him and I had broken up. But you know, that's
[55:13] Speaker 1: another dynamic of he knows, Okay, this song's not about me,
[55:17] Speaker 1: I have to sing it, oh, per form it knowing
[55:21] Speaker 1: who it's about, you know, and so that that's also
[55:24] Speaker 1: another part of our dynamic. That's all that we're getting through,
[55:27] Speaker 1: and that's pretty interesting. That is interesting. Well, this was
[55:32] Speaker 1: the juicy bit.
[55:33] Speaker 11: It was.
[55:37] Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, well you got it going on though, Are
[55:40] Speaker 1: you guys on tour a lot still?
[55:43] Speaker 10: Yeah?
[55:43] Speaker 1: We were doing Latin America for the first time, I know,
[55:48] Speaker 1: everywhere kind of We're doing Colombia, Chile, Mexico, Perul I'm
[55:58] Speaker 1: not sure, Brazil at Hinthina, Brazil. Yes, have you been before?
[56:03] Speaker 1: I have. It's so fun. Yeah, I heard the fans
[56:05] Speaker 1: are like it's just so animated and like, yeah, you're
[56:08] Speaker 1: gonna have fun. Yeah, you're gonna have the best shows
[56:11] Speaker 1: probably ever. Yeah, the worst travel days and some of
[56:15] Speaker 1: the best food. Okay yeah cool yeah, so no good,
[56:19] Speaker 1: So no, yeah, I'm excited. This was really fun. It
[56:22] Speaker 1: was so fun. Thanks so much for doing Thank you
[56:25] Speaker 1: so much for such a pleasure. I'm so excited for
