The adverts are not chosen by us, but played automatically depending on the platform you listen through (Apple Podcasts, Spotify, etc) and the country you live in. The adverts may even be different if you listen to the story twice. We have had a handful of instances where an advert has played that is not suitable for a family audience, despite the podcast clearly being labelled for children. If you’re concerned about an advert you hear, please contact the platform you are listening to directly. Spotify, in particular, has proven problematic in the past, for both inappropriate adverts and the volume at which the adverts play. If you find this happening, please let Spotify know via their Facebook customer care page. As creators, we want your child’s experience to be a pleasurable one. Running adverts is necessary to allow us to operate, but please do consider the premium subscription service as an alternative – it’s advert free.

[0:42] Speaker 1: with a baby deer, a baby wolf, and a baby
[0:46] Speaker 1: albino owl. Don't forget to listen to the animal facts

[0:54] Speaker 1: you'd like to suggest an animal for a story, then
[0:57] Speaker 1: please do let us know a podcast at Animal tales
[1:00] Speaker 1: dot uk. As premium listeners, we guarantee to write one
[1:04] Speaker 1: for you. For now, it's time to sit back and
[1:08] Speaker 1: get comfy, because it's time to begin Forbidden Friends. Once
[1:15] Speaker 1: upon a time, there were three very young animals, a fawn,
[1:20] Speaker 1: a wolf cub, and an owlet. They were little more
[1:24] Speaker 1: than babies, so didn't know much about the world or
[1:27] Speaker 1: what was expected of them, and they certainly didn't know
[1:31] Speaker 1: that they couldn't be friends. Deer, wolves and owls would
[1:36] Speaker 1: normally have nothing to do with one another in the forest,
[1:40] Speaker 1: but nobody had told the three youngsters this. All they
[1:44] Speaker 1: wanted to do was spend time together and play. River
[1:49] Speaker 1: was the tallest, being a fawn, her long deer legs
[1:54] Speaker 1: had been wobbly at first, but now she enjoyed running
[1:57] Speaker 1: and jumping through the undergrowth. Rainy was smaller, but being
[2:02] Speaker 1: a wolf cub, she was always looking to play. She
[2:06] Speaker 1: enjoyed pouncing and discovering new and interesting smells with her
[2:11] Speaker 1: sensitive nose. And then there was Shine, the owlet, still
[2:17] Speaker 1: wrapped in a covering of fluffy down. It would be
[2:20] Speaker 1: a long time until her adult feathers grew that would
[2:23] Speaker 1: help her to fly. What's more, Shine was albino, so
[2:28] Speaker 1: every feather was a brilliant white. They were a strange sight,
[2:34] Speaker 1: the fawn, the wolf cub, and the owlet, but all
[2:37] Speaker 1: that mattered to them was having fun together and not
[2:41] Speaker 1: knowing any better. That's what they did then. One evening,
[2:47] Speaker 1: while they rolled around amongst the bracken and foxgloves, a
[2:51] Speaker 1: hoopoo bird landed on a near by branch. It was
[2:55] Speaker 1: so surprised to see the three animals together that the
[2:59] Speaker 1: tall feathery crest atop its head almost popped off. What
[3:03] Speaker 1: is the meaning of this, the hoopoo snapped crossly. An
[3:08] Speaker 1: owl playing with a deer and a wolf has the
[3:12] Speaker 1: world gone mad? The three friends were so stunned by
[3:17] Speaker 1: the stern voice that they stopped playing immediately. We were
[3:21] Speaker 1: only playing, said Shine the owl at quietly. Then you
[3:26] Speaker 1: should be playing with your own kind, said the hoopoo sternly,
[3:31] Speaker 1: another owl, perhaps, or at the very least a creature
[3:35] Speaker 1: with feathers. A deer and a wolf are not friends
[3:39] Speaker 1: for you, But why, asked Shine innocently. Deer are simple
[3:46] Speaker 1: and foolish, while wolves are ferocious and deadly, stated the hoopoo,
[3:52] Speaker 1: flicking its long beak upwards as if to say there
[3:55] Speaker 1: was nothing more to be said on the matter. Shine's
[3:59] Speaker 1: experience of her two friends didn't match what the hoopoo
[4:03] Speaker 1: was saying at all, but she was too young to
[4:06] Speaker 1: argue with such an impressive bird. However, during this exchange,
[4:11] Speaker 1: she had noted something curious about the hoopoo, something she
[4:16] Speaker 1: had never seen before on a bird. What's that wrapped
[4:20] Speaker 1: around your foot? Asked the howlet. The hoopoo was surprised
[4:25] Speaker 1: by the change of subject. Its foot was tangled up
[4:29] Speaker 1: in fishing line, something it had accidentally trodden in while
[4:33] Speaker 1: foraging for insects beside a river. The more the hoopoe
[4:37] Speaker 1: had pecked and pulled at the line, the more knotted
[4:40] Speaker 1: it appeared to get. It was now very uncomfortable, making
[4:45] Speaker 1: standing on the foot difficult. It's something a human threw away,
[4:50] Speaker 1: grumbled the hoopoo as it glanced at the fishing line.
[4:54] Speaker 1: And now I'm stuck with it. It's certainly nothing you
[4:58] Speaker 1: need to concern yourself with, but I could help, said
[5:02] Speaker 1: river the fawn. If you'd like to hear more, please
