The adverts are not chosen by us, but played automatically depending on the platform you listen through (Apple Podcasts, Spotify, etc) and the country you live in. The adverts may even be different if you listen to the story twice. We have had a handful of instances where an advert has played that is not suitable for a family audience, despite the podcast clearly being labelled for children. If you’re concerned about an advert you hear, please contact the platform you are listening to directly. Spotify, in particular, has proven problematic in the past, for both inappropriate adverts and the volume at which the adverts play. If you find this happening, please let Spotify know via their Facebook customer care page. As creators, we want your child’s experience to be a pleasurable one. Running adverts is necessary to allow us to operate, but please do consider the premium subscription service as an alternative – it’s advert free.

[0:00] Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to a special taster of our new
[0:03] Speaker 1: premium only story. We hope you like it. Yo. Hello,
[0:23] Speaker 1: I'm Josephine and this is the Animal Tales podcast, home
[0:26] Speaker 1: to over four hundred stories written just for you. Our
[0:31] Speaker 1: Friday story is especially for our Premium subscribers only. Marnie
[0:36] Speaker 1: is a Premium member from Sheffield in the UK and
[0:39] Speaker 1: she would like a story with a hedgehog, a sugar glider,
[0:43] Speaker 1: a starfish and a butterfly. Don't forget to listen to
[0:47] Speaker 1: the animal facts after the story to learn more about
[0:50] Speaker 1: these creatures. For now, it's time to sit back and
[0:54] Speaker 1: get comfy, because it's time to begin A home for
[0:59] Speaker 1: a hedge Marne had lived under the same hedge her
[1:04] Speaker 1: whole life. It was the perfect spot for a hedgehog.
[1:08] Speaker 1: During the summer months, she was safe and protected by
[1:11] Speaker 1: the hedges spread in greenery. Then in the winter months,
[1:16] Speaker 1: when she would hibernate, Marne would bury herself in a
[1:19] Speaker 1: pile of fallen leaves, safe amongst the roots of the bush.
[1:24] Speaker 1: This was her home, sheltered and perfect. But one morning,
[1:30] Speaker 1: Marne was awoken by a terrible noise. Terrified, she wriggled
[1:35] Speaker 1: deep under her dry leaves as the ground shook and
[1:39] Speaker 1: roaring noises thundered overhead. This went on for hours, and
[1:44] Speaker 1: Marne didn't dare appear until long after the noise had stopped.
[1:49] Speaker 1: She wriggled out to find that the hedge her home,
[1:52] Speaker 1: was gone, and it wasn't the only plant that had disappeared.
[1:57] Speaker 1: Nearby bushes and trees and brambles had all been cleared away,
[2:02] Speaker 1: leaving the muddy ground churned up with tire trucks. Without
[2:08] Speaker 1: the hedge's protection, Marney felt exposed. She couldn't stay out
[2:12] Speaker 1: in the open like this, so Marney ran, heading for
[2:17] Speaker 1: the distant sight of trees. The woodland was her only
[2:21] Speaker 1: chance of finding somewhere safe. Once there, Marney checked every hole, log,
[2:28] Speaker 1: and leaf pile that she came across, to her dismay.
[2:33] Speaker 1: They were all lived in already, and none of the
[2:35] Speaker 1: animal seemed interested in sharing. Eventually, though, all her searching
[2:41] Speaker 1: paid off when she found a small hole under the
[2:44] Speaker 1: roots of a large tree. Relieved, Marney squeezed herself in.
[2:50] Speaker 1: It was a tight fit, but it was enough. Maybe this,
[2:55] Speaker 1: she thought could be her new home. Almost immediately, something
[3:00] Speaker 1: landed on the tree's trunk above her and peered into
[3:04] Speaker 1: the hole. It was a sugar glider. Oh, I'm dreadfully sorry,
[3:10] Speaker 1: said Marny. Is this your hole? No, said the sugar glider.
[3:17] Speaker 1: I live up in the trees, not underneath them, But
[3:20] Speaker 1: I just came to warn you. There are big, hungry
[3:24] Speaker 1: animals in these woods, and I don't think that little
[3:27] Speaker 1: hole will keep you safe enough. Marny's heart sank. This
[3:32] Speaker 1: had been the first place she'd found that she could
[3:35] Speaker 1: call her own. I'm too tired to search for anywhere else,
[3:40] Speaker 1: she yawned. Thank you for your thoughtful words, but for
[3:44] Speaker 1: now I'm going to have a rest here. I understand,
[3:49] Speaker 1: said the sugar glider, and I wish you luck. Its
[3:53] Speaker 1: head disappeared from the hole's entrance, leaving Marny to curl
[3:57] Speaker 1: up tight into a prickly ball. There may be big,
[4:01] Speaker 1: hungry animals, but at least she had her spines to
[4:04] Speaker 1: protect her. Very quickly, Marny was fast asleep. Some time later,
[4:12] Speaker 1: she was awoken by the sound of snuffling light footsteps
[4:17] Speaker 1: and crinkling leaves sounded close, and then came the smell
[4:22] Speaker 1: a fox. Marney held her breath, hoping she wouldn't be
[4:27] Speaker 1: found All she could hope was that her new home
[4:31] Speaker 1: would keep her safe, just like her old one had done.
[4:35] Speaker 1: For a long time, nothing happened. There was no movement
[4:39] Speaker 1: beyond the tree. It must have gone, sighed Marny with relief,
[4:45] Speaker 1: and uncurled herself to look, poking her nose from the hole.
[4:51] Speaker 1: This was a mistake. The fox had been waiting patiently
[4:55] Speaker 1: for her, and now it was ready to pounce. But
[4:59] Speaker 1: as it attempted to do so, something landed on the
[5:02] Speaker 1: fox's face, covering its eyes with an outstretched body. It
[5:07] Speaker 1: was the sugar Glider. If you'd like to hear more,
