The adverts are not chosen by us, but played automatically depending on the platform you listen through (Apple Podcasts, Spotify, etc) and the country you live in. The adverts may even be different if you listen to the story twice. We have had a handful of instances where an advert has played that is not suitable for a family audience, despite the podcast clearly being labelled for children. If you’re concerned about an advert you hear, please contact the platform you are listening to directly. Spotify, in particular, has proven problematic in the past, for both inappropriate adverts and the volume at which the adverts play. If you find this happening, please let Spotify know via their Facebook customer care page. As creators, we want your child’s experience to be a pleasurable one. Running adverts is necessary to allow us to operate, but please do consider the premium subscription service as an alternative – it’s advert free.

## Transcript

[0:12] Speaker 1: Yea. Hello. My name's Josephine and this is the five
[0:18] Speaker 1: hundredth story on the Animal Tales podcast. Thank you to
[0:22] Speaker 1: all of you for listening and supporting Animal Tales. It
[0:26] Speaker 1: couldn't happen without you. If you know some one that
[0:29] Speaker 1: might enjoy Animal Tales, please do mention us to them.
[0:34] Speaker 1: We asked our premium listeners to suggest an unusual animal
[0:37] Speaker 1: for our five hundredth story, and it was AMORALI from
[0:41] Speaker 1: Alabama U s A who suggested a great one and
[0:46] Speaker 1: I I. You can learn more about these creatures in
[0:49] Speaker 1: the animal facts after the story. Okay, are you ready?
[0:54] Speaker 1: That's good? Then I'll begin. I I spy. There are
[1:01] Speaker 1: many voices in Lima town that day. Strange news had
[1:05] Speaker 1: brought all the lemurs together, and now Moe, the town's mare,
[1:09] Speaker 1: and a ringtailed leamer was calling for order. Quickly, a
[1:14] Speaker 1: hush fell over the babbling crowd. I know the news
[1:19] Speaker 1: sounds unbelievable, but I assure you it is true. The
[1:24] Speaker 1: ringtailed Lema said, the Fossors want to make peace with us,
[1:30] Speaker 1: but the Fosss hate all Lemurs called out at sefarkar Lema.
[1:36] Speaker 1: I don't think they can be trusted I agree, said
[1:40] Speaker 1: a tiny mouse Lemer. They've always been so mean to us, Lemas,
[1:46] Speaker 1: Why do they suddenly want to be nice? Murmurs of
[1:50] Speaker 1: agreement rippled through the crowd. Moe could see their point
[1:54] Speaker 1: of view. Life on Madagascar has been a struggle with
[1:58] Speaker 1: the Fosss for as long as we all can remember.
[2:01] Speaker 1: We've always squabbled. They do worse than squabble, said the
[2:06] Speaker 1: Suffacha crossly. Those Fossors are downright mean. I know, I know,
[2:14] Speaker 1: said Moe gently. But the Fossors are suggesting peace. Isn't
[2:19] Speaker 1: that something we want to There are some nods from
[2:23] Speaker 1: the crowd, although many still seemed unsure. So how will
[2:29] Speaker 1: this piece work? Asked an injury lemur. That's easy to answer,
[2:36] Speaker 1: continued Moe. As an apology for years of strife. Tomorrow,
[2:41] Speaker 1: the Fosss will throw us a party. There will be games, music,
[2:46] Speaker 1: and cake. Many of the lemurs looked impressed. After all,
[2:52] Speaker 1: who could say no to cake? So it was decided
[2:57] Speaker 1: they would agree to peace between Lemurs Andosss and celebrate
[3:01] Speaker 1: it at tomorrow's grand party. Mo, though remained nervous as
[3:07] Speaker 1: he watched everyone leave. He was old and knew the
[3:12] Speaker 1: Fosss only too well. He could only hope they meant
[3:16] Speaker 1: what they were saying. Thinking the meeting hall empty, MO
[3:21] Speaker 1: went to turn off the lights, only to realize he
[3:24] Speaker 1: wasn't alone. My apologies, Amarali, I didn't realize you were
[3:30] Speaker 1: still here, said the mayor, looking at the figure in
[3:33] Speaker 1: the shadows. It was an ae I, one of the
[3:37] Speaker 1: most secretive of all the lemurs on Madagascar. It is
[3:42] Speaker 1: good news, Amarali said softly. Peace between Lemas and Foss's
[3:47] Speaker 1: would be good for every one. You and I both
[3:51] Speaker 1: know this is suspicious, said the Mayor, speaking honestly. At last,
[3:57] Speaker 1: you think it's a trick, the aye I asked. I'm
[4:01] Speaker 1: not sure, said the ring tailed mare, But for the
[4:05] Speaker 1: sake of all lemurs, I have to give it a chance.
[4:09] Speaker 1: And what if the Fosss are up to no good,
[4:12] Speaker 1: AMORALI asked, that's where you come in, Mo replied, I
[4:19] Speaker 1: need a secret agent to check this out to night.
[4:23] Speaker 1: If the Fosss are up to something, I want to
[4:26] Speaker 1: know about it before it's too late. The eye I
[4:30] Speaker 1: nodded in understanding, then left, slipping away into the night.
[4:36] Speaker 1: The Mayor sighed, if spying on the Fosss was what
[4:40] Speaker 1: was needed, he couldn't have picked a better Lema for
[4:43] Speaker 1: the job. The main Fossor town was some distance away,
[4:49] Speaker 1: high in a cluster of bao bob trees. One of
[4:53] Speaker 1: the largest buildings belonged to the leader of the Fosss,
[4:56] Speaker 1: and tonight he was holding a gathering of those he
[4:59] Speaker 1: trusted most. There was a table around which the assembled
[5:04] Speaker 1: Fosss either stood or sat, and on the tabletop was
[5:08] Speaker 1: a large sheet of paper which everyone was studying. Outside
[5:13] Speaker 1: the window, his dark fur helping him hide in the darkness,
[5:18] Speaker 1: watched Amarali. There were too many Fosss in his way
[5:22] Speaker 1: to allow him to see the paper, but his giant
[5:25] Speaker 1: bat like ears allowed him to catch at least some
[5:28] Speaker 1: of the conversation. They were discussing the party, the lemurs,
[5:33] Speaker 1: and the cake. But even Amorali's ii ears couldn't hear
[5:39] Speaker 1: everything that was being said. He'd have to try something else.
[5:45] Speaker 1: Creeping stealthily, Amorali located a quieter part of the house
[5:50] Speaker 1: without any lights on. He tried the first door he
[5:54] Speaker 1: came to, finding it unlocked. Slipping inside, he found himself
[5:59] Speaker 1: in a very messy kitchen, piled high with mixing bowls,
[6:04] Speaker 1: empty bags of flour, and sugar and cartons of eggs.
[6:09] Speaker 1: Someone's been baking cakes, Amarani noted, being careful not to
[6:15] Speaker 1: disturb anything. Amarali tiptoed through the kitchen to arrive in
[6:19] Speaker 1: a dark hallway. Somewhere over his head was the meeting
[6:24] Speaker 1: room full of Fosss. He'd need to stay alert if
[6:28] Speaker 1: he wasn't going to get caught. Almost immediately he heard
[6:33] Speaker 1: voices approaching. As the hallway lights flickered on, Amarali had
[6:39] Speaker 1: to dart through a nearby door, just managing to close
[6:42] Speaker 1: it behind him in time. Yeah, it docks to morrow morning,
[6:48] Speaker 1: said one of the fosss. It's huge, But will it
[6:53] Speaker 1: be big enough? Asked another voice. I hope so, the
[6:58] Speaker 1: first Fossor cackled, Otherwise it'll be a tight fit. Amarali's
[7:04] Speaker 1: eyes narrowed. It sounded as if the Fosss were getting
[7:08] Speaker 1: a boat, and a big one at that. But what for?
[7:14] Speaker 1: An unusually loud snore made the eye eye freeze. Somehow
[7:19] Speaker 1: he'd managed to sneak into a foss's bedroom. He couldn't
[7:23] Speaker 1: stay here, but now it sounded as if more Fosss
[7:27] Speaker 1: were approaching, and they weren't trying to be quiet either.
[7:32] Speaker 1: Fearing the sleeping Fossor would be disturbed. Amarali moved into
[7:36] Speaker 1: the darkest part of the room. Fortunately, his night vision
[7:41] Speaker 1: was excellent. This end of the room was like an office,
[7:46] Speaker 1: with a cluttered desk and a whiteboard on the wall.
[7:49] Speaker 1: Written on the whiteboard in bold pen with the words
[7:53] Speaker 1: one drop per hour of sleep. In such a large house,
[7:59] Speaker 1: it seems range for an office to include a bed
[8:02] Speaker 1: or a bedroom to include an office. Amorani noted a
[8:08] Speaker 1: cup beside the bed, and when he investigated it, he
[8:12] Speaker 1: noticed a dribble of blue liquid at the bottom. Was
[8:16] Speaker 1: this fossor part of some sort of experiment? Had this
[8:20] Speaker 1: cup contained whatever gave an hour of sleep per drop?
[8:25] Speaker 1: Outside the voices had died away, so after a quick
[8:30] Speaker 1: careful listen at the door, the eyeye sneaked out. The
[8:34] Speaker 1: fosss had been heading towards the kitchen, so Amorali headed
[8:39] Speaker 1: for the stairs. Heading up, Amorali counted the doors until
[8:44] Speaker 1: he was certain he'd found the room he'd seen from outside.
[8:48] Speaker 1: He couldn't hear anyone within, but when he tried the
[8:52] Speaker 1: door he found it locked. Luckily, Amorali was prepared. The
[8:59] Speaker 1: eyeye had won finger. Unlike all the others It was
[9:03] Speaker 1: very long and very thin, great for hooking an insect
[9:07] Speaker 1: out of a tree and also ideal for picking locks. Slowly,
[9:14] Speaker 1: he pushed it into the lock, moving his long claw
[9:18] Speaker 1: until he heard a satisfying click. The door swung open
[9:23] Speaker 1: to reveal the meeting room. Amarali immediately headed to the table,
[9:28] Speaker 1: and there was the large sheet of paper that had
[9:31] Speaker 1: held so much interest. It was a map of Madagascar.
[9:37] Speaker 1: A line ran down the middle showing where the island
[9:40] Speaker 1: was split into the Fosser half and the Lema half.
[9:45] Speaker 1: There were lots of large red crosses drawn over both halves,
[9:50] Speaker 1: but they meant nothing to the eye eye. But what
[9:53] Speaker 1: was odd was a sketchy drawing of a roller coaster
[9:57] Speaker 1: with Fosser fun Land written underneath. It was right where
[10:02] Speaker 1: Lema Town currently stood, so thought AMORALI. A Fossor theme
[10:08] Speaker 1: park where a Fossor theme park shouldn't be, some sort
[10:13] Speaker 1: of sleeping experiment going on downstairs, a large boat arriving tomorrow,
[10:19] Speaker 1: and a marathon baking session in the kitchen. But were
[10:24] Speaker 1: they all connected? Amarali's ears twitched. Someone was coming. He
[10:31] Speaker 1: couldn't afford to get caught. Now he needed to get
[10:34] Speaker 1: all this information to the Mare. If the Fosss caught
[10:38] Speaker 1: a spy in their midst, then any chance of peace
[10:42] Speaker 1: was over before it had begun. He had to move
[10:46] Speaker 1: and fast. The door clicked open as a breeze from
[10:51] Speaker 1: the open window ruffled the map. Somebody closed that window,
[10:56] Speaker 1: snapped the foss leader. I said, I wanted this room
[11:00] Speaker 1: left secure. A grumpy Fossor poured it closed, seeing nothing
[11:06] Speaker 1: beyond but darkness. AMORALI was already deep in the shadows,
[11:11] Speaker 1: using the night as cover. The party was to take
[11:16] Speaker 1: place at the border between the two halves of the island.
[11:20] Speaker 1: Lemurs from across their half of Madagascar flocked to find
[11:24] Speaker 1: an elaborate venue of balloons, flowers and flags. They were
[11:29] Speaker 1: greeted warmly by the Fossors, who shared drinks and set
[11:33] Speaker 1: up games. It was as if there had never been
[11:37] Speaker 1: any trouble between the two sides. Mo the Mare stood
[11:43] Speaker 1: off to one side, clearly worried. Come a long smile,
[11:49] Speaker 1: said the foss leader with a grin as he threw
[11:52] Speaker 1: an arm around Moe's shoulder. This is a day of celebration.
[11:57] Speaker 1: Finally the island has become one. The mayor smiled weakly.
[12:03] Speaker 1: I'm glad we could finally make peace, he said. Then
[12:08] Speaker 1: let us seal the deal with cake, announced the leader
[12:12] Speaker 1: of the Foss's, gesturing to where an enormous cart of
[12:16] Speaker 1: cupcakes was being wheeled forward. The Leamurs gasped at this
[12:22] Speaker 1: extraordinary mountain of cake, all adorned with bright blue icing.
[12:28] Speaker 1: And there's enough for every Leamur here, the foss grinned
[12:33] Speaker 1: from us to you, let us eat one together, suggested Moe,
[12:40] Speaker 1: as a sign of friendship. Oh there's no need for that,
[12:45] Speaker 1: deflected the foss leader. The cupcakes are for you, guys.
[12:51] Speaker 1: I know, I know, smiled Moe, suddenly seeming to gain
[12:56] Speaker 1: his confidence. But we think we should share them half each.
[13:01] Speaker 1: Isn't that right, Amorali the eye I appeared at the
[13:06] Speaker 1: Foss's side, holding out a blue frosted cupcake. We insist,
[13:12] Speaker 1: said Amorali. More and more Lemurs were falling silent as
[13:17] Speaker 1: they witnessed this strange exchange. You don't know what you're doing,
[13:23] Speaker 1: snapped the Fossor. By refusing our generous baking, you risk
[13:28] Speaker 1: ruining the peace. Oh we know what we're doing, corrected
[13:34] Speaker 1: the Eye, because we know what's in these cupcakes. The
[13:40] Speaker 1: Fossor suddenly looked very pale. You've dosed them with a
[13:45] Speaker 1: sleeping potion, haven't you, challenged Mo. The lemurs gasped, while
[13:51] Speaker 1: the Fossors began to shift uncomfortably. There were many more
[13:55] Speaker 1: lemurs present than there were Fosss. The Fosss were numbered.
[14:01] Speaker 1: That's we didn't that's absurd, the foss leader spluttered. Then
[14:08] Speaker 1: share a cupcake with Mo, suggested Amarali. Calmly, Look, this
[14:14] Speaker 1: is crazy, the foss said, urgently, trying to take control
[14:20] Speaker 1: of the situation. Why would we want to put you
[14:23] Speaker 1: all to sleep? What would be the point? So you
[14:27] Speaker 1: could load us onto a boat and send us far,
[14:30] Speaker 1: far away. By the time we'd woken up, the whole
[14:34] Speaker 1: island would be yours. Amarali declared. Is this true? Bellowed
[14:40] Speaker 1: the Safarka Lima to the Fosss around him. Well is
[14:45] Speaker 1: it they wanted to get rid of us? I knew it,
[14:49] Speaker 1: shouted the mouse Lema, this was all one big trick. Furious,
[14:56] Speaker 1: the Lemurs turned on the Fossors, many of which were
[14:59] Speaker 1: already making a break for it. In no time, there
[15:03] Speaker 1: wasn't a single Fossa to be seen. Oh well, sighed Mo.
[15:10] Speaker 1: I guess nothing's changed after all. We could still have
[15:14] Speaker 1: a party, suggested Amarali. We've got everything we need here.
[15:21] Speaker 1: I guess we do, agreed, Mo, although we really should
[15:25] Speaker 1: avoid the cupcakes. Leave that to me, said the eye eye.
[15:32] Speaker 1: We owe you a big debt of thanks, Amarali, the
[15:35] Speaker 1: mayor said, And I suspect we'll need you again when
[15:40] Speaker 1: the Fosss try something next, but it's good to know
[15:44] Speaker 1: I'll have my eye spy on stand by. Animal fat
[15:54] Speaker 1: e eyes are one of one hundred and seven species
[15:57] Speaker 1: of lima, all found on the island of Madagascar. With
[16:02] Speaker 1: so many different kinds of lemur, e eyes evolved away
[16:06] Speaker 1: to survive that all the others didn't, They became nighttime specialists.
[16:12] Speaker 1: They have large night vision eyes and enormous bat like
[16:16] Speaker 1: ears that they can rotate to help them pinpoint sounds.
[16:20] Speaker 1: They listened for the movement of insect larvae burrowing beneath
[16:25] Speaker 1: the bark of trees, and when they detect it, they
[16:28] Speaker 1: use their incizeor teeth to chew into the bark and wood.
[16:33] Speaker 1: Once the larvae's tunnel is revealed, they then use their
[16:37] Speaker 1: incredibly long and thin third finger to poke inside and
[16:41] Speaker 1: hook the grub out. If you've never seen a picture
[16:45] Speaker 1: of an eye eye, it's worth taking a look. Thank
[16:49] Speaker 1: you for your suggestion, AMORALI. We hope you enjoyed the story,
