The AI race isn't about chips anymore. It's about electricity. In a massive $4.75 billion deal, Google (Alphabet) just acquired Intersect Power, a major clean energy developer, to secure the grid access its data centers desperately need. But Google isn't alone. From Microsoft restarting Three Mile Island to Amazon's massive nuclear contracts, Big Tech is panic-buying power plants. In this video, we break down why the "AI Energy Wall" is forcing tech giants to become utility companies, and what this means for the future of the power grid, nuclear energy, and your electric bill. The Impact on Consumers and Investors KEY TAKEAWAYS ✅ Google's $4.75B Bet: Alphabet acquires Intersect Power to build "behind the meter" energy projects, bypassing the clogged public grid. ✅ The Energy Crisis: AI queries use 10x more power than search. By 2030, US data centers will consume 9% of all electricity. ✅ Nuclear Renaissance: Tech giants are single-handedly reviving nuclear power (SMRs & restarts) because they need 24/7 reliability that solar/wind can't provide. ✅ Vertical Integration: Big Tech is now owning the entire stack: from the AI model to the chip to the power plant running it. ## Transcript

[0:00] For the last three years, the most valuable resource in the
[0:02] world was the NVIDIA 800 chip. But that era is officially over.
[0:08] On December 22nd, 2025, Google made a move that proves that
[0:12] that game has changed. They didn't buy a chip maker.
[0:16] They didn't buy a software startup.
[0:18] They bought a power company. Google acquired Interstate Power
[0:21] for $4.75 billion. This isn't just an ESG play, it
[0:25] is a desperate move to secure the one thing that can kill the
[0:29] AI revolution that is electricity.
[0:31] We are entering the energy war phase of AI, and if you think
[0:34] your electricity bill is high now, just wait until you're
[0:37] competing with ChatGPT for grid access.
[0:40] Today we breakdown why Big Tech is buying the grid.
[0:44] First, let's look at the deal. Google bought Intersec Power, a
[0:47] clean energy developer backed by private equity giant TPG, for
[0:51] $4.75 billion. Intersect is in the small
[0:55] startup. They manage $15 billion in
[0:57] energy assets. They have massive solar and
[1:00] battery storage projects in Texas and California, the two
[1:03] biggest battlegrounds for data center power.
[1:06] But why buy them outright? Because Google can't afford to
[1:09] wait in line. By owning the developer, they
[1:11] can prioritize their data centers.
[1:13] They can build power plants directly next to their server
[1:16] farms, known as behind the meter generation, by passing the slow
[1:20] clocked public grid. It's vertical integration.
[1:22] Just like they design their own Tpus to stop relying on NVIDIA,
[1:26] they are now buying power plants to stop relying on the utility
[1:29] company. Now this deal didn't happen in a
[1:31] vacuum. It happened because the AI
[1:33] industry is hitting a wall. A single AI query consumes 10
[1:36] times more energy than a Google search.
[1:39] And as models get smarter, like the O3 we talked about, that
[1:43] number explodes by 20-30. U.S. data centers are projected
[1:47] to consume 9% of the entire country's electricity.
[1:50] That is more than double today's share.
[1:53] The grid cannot handle this. In Virginia and Ohio, power
[1:56] companies are already turning away new data centers because
[1:59] there just isn't enough juice. Google, Microsoft and Amazon
[2:03] know that if they run out of power, their growth stops, their
[2:07] stock prices crash and the AI party ends.
[2:10] This fear has triggered a spending spree we haven't seen
[2:13] since the industrial revolution. It's not just Google.
[2:15] Every tech giant is panic buying power.
[2:18] Just look at the contract signed in 2025 alone.
[2:21] Microsoft literally paid to restart the dead 3 Mile Island
[2:24] nuclear plant. They signed a 20 year deal to
[2:27] buy 100% of its power, 835 megawatts, straight to its data
[2:32] centres. Amazon went bigger.
[2:34] They signed a massive 1.9 GW nuclear deal with Tallinn Energy
[2:38] in Pennsylvania. That's enough power for nearly 2
[2:41] million homes dedicated solely to AWS.
[2:45] Meta isn't staying behind either.
[2:46] They just signed a 2.5 GW deal with Next Era Energy from the
[2:50] largest renewable deals in history, securing solar and
[2:53] battery storage across the entire US grid.
[2:56] And Google before buying Intersect, they signed the
[2:59] world's first deal for small modular nuclear reactors with
[3:03] Cairo's Power 10. Companies have become the single
[3:06] biggest force keeping the US energy industry alive.
[3:09] They don't just want green energy anymore, they want 24/7
[3:13] energy. Solar goes down at night, wind
[3:16] stops blowing. But nuclear runs all day, just
[3:19] like an AI data center. So Google secures its power.
[3:23] Amazon builds its reactors. What about the rest of us?
[3:27] Critics warn that this rush for power is driving up electricity
[3:30] prices for regular families. In some regions, utility bills
[3:34] are soaring because infrastructure costs are being
[3:36] passed down to consumers. We're heading into a world where
[3:40] energy is a premium asset. If you're an investor, look at
[3:43] the company supplying the picks and shovels for this energy bar,
[3:47] nuclear fuel grid infrastructure and battery storage.
[3:50] The AI revolution isn't digital anymore.
[3:52] It's physical and it's hungry. Thanks for watching.
[3:55] We'll be back next week with another story from the front
[3:58] lines of global investing VC10X.
