On March 23rd, 2026, a single Truth Social post moved S&P 500 futures up 4% and crashed Brent crude from $109 to $92 — in under ten minutes. $1.7 trillion in equity value shifted before most investors had finished their morning coffee. What happened before that post is the real story. In the minute preceding the announcement, $580 million in oil contracts — positioned to profit from falling crude prices — were executed at 4 to 6 times normal volume. Estimated profit if held through the move: over $100 million. No charges. No confirmed coordination. But a regulatory framework that was never designed for this. In this episode, we break down the anatomy of a TACO trade (Trump Announcement Calms Oil), the trading anomalies that preceded it, the legal gap that makes accountability nearly impossible — and what it means for how you price tail risk in a market increasingly driven by executive announcements. --- What we cover: - The morning of March 23rd: what moved and how fast - The TACO pattern: three occurrences, one structure - $580M in oil shorts, one minute before the post - The legal framework — and why it doesn't reach here - What this means for your portfolio --- LINKS Prashant Choubey - https://www.linkedin.com/in/choubeysahab Subscribe to VC10X newsletter - https://vc10x.beehiiv.com Subscribe on YouTube - https://youtube.com/@VC10X Subscribe on Apple Podcasts - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/vc10x-investing-venture-capital-asset-management-private/id1632806986 Subscribe on Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/7F7KEhXNhTx1bKTBFgzv3k?si=WgQ4ozMiQJ-6nowj6wBgqQ VC10X website - https://vc10x.com For sponsorship queries reach out to prashantchoubey3@gmail.com This channel is for asset managers, allocators, and investors who want analysis that holds up — not headlines dressed as insight. **Subscribe** for weekly data-driven breakdowns of the forces reshaping capital markets. ## Transcript

[0:00] On the morning of March 23rd, 2026, U.S. markets were pointing
[0:04] sharply lower. Middle East tensions were
[0:06] elevated. Oil was trading above $109 a
[0:10] barrel. Then just before the opening
[0:12] bell, opposed by Donald Trump, appeared untruth social.
[0:16] Within minutes, SNP 500 futures were up between 2.5 and 4%.
[0:22] Brent crude collapsed from 109 to $92.00 a barrel.
[0:27] Roughly $1.7 trillion in U.S. equity value moved in under 10
[0:32] minutes. The question that serious
[0:34] investors are asking now is, was that a peace announcement or a
[0:37] market event with the political packaging?
[0:40] Let's find out. President Trump posted that the
[0:45] US had sent Iran a plan to end the war and that strikes were
[0:49] being paused for five days now. Why five days?
[0:53] Coincidentally, the markets also stay open on five days, so there
[0:58] might be some correlation there. But the market reaction was
[1:01] immediate. Equities ribbed.
[1:03] Oil crashed. Defense stocks faded.
[1:06] Then Iran denied any talks were underway, calling the
[1:09] announcement a political ploy. Markets partially reversed.
[1:13] This is not the third time this pattern has played out during
[1:16] the conflict. Traders now have a name for it.
[1:18] Taco Trump announcement comes oil, and if a pattern is real
[1:23] and reckoning it has exploitable structure, that's where the
[1:26] concern becomes material. In the minutes before Trump's
[1:30] post went public, oil futures markets recorded a sharp spike
[1:34] in activity. Approximately $580 million in
[1:38] contracts position to profit from the falling crude prices
[1:41] were executed in roughly one minute.
[1:44] That volume was four to six times the normal rate for that
[1:47] time slot. If those positions were held
[1:50] through the subsequent 15% drop in bent crude, the estimated
[1:53] profit exceeds $100 million. And here I want to be precise.
[1:58] There is no publicly disclosed evidence linking the president
[2:01] or anyone in his administration to those rates.
[2:05] The timing is anomalous. The scale is unusual.
[2:09] The direction was correct. But Anomali is not proof.
[2:12] It is a basis for inquiry. That distinction matters here.
[2:16] US security's law prohibits trading on material non public
[2:19] information in breach of a duty. For cororate insiders, that
[2:23] framework is well established. For government officials and
[2:26] secifically for the resident, almost no prior case law exists.
[2:31] The SEC 2023 reforms to Rule 10B51 tighten trading
[2:37] restriction for corporate executives, but those rules were
[2:39] designed for earnings related information.
[2:42] They do not map onto officials who move markets through policy
[2:45] divisions they control. That regulatory gap is real and
[2:49] nobody has addressed it. The same administration
[2:51] currently under scrutiny is also pushing the Stop Insider Trading
[2:56] Act, targeting congressional stock trading specifically,
[2:59] citing figures like Pelosi. The policy has bipartisan
[3:03] support and stands on its own merit, but it does not address
[3:06] what we have described today. Here's a summary what we do.
[3:10] Executive announcement tied to the Iran conflict have produced
[3:14] some of the largest single session moves in oil inequities
[3:16] in recent memory, consistently timed at moments of market
[3:21] stress. What we know about the trades,
[3:24] $580 million in oil shorts, 4 to 6 times normal volume, executed
[3:29] in roughly one minute before the announcement.
[3:32] What we don't know is whether any of that was coordinated and
[3:37] what the law does not address a clear framework for preventing
[3:40] government officials or those with proximity to them from
[3:43] profiting on policy divisions at this scale.
[3:46] That gap predates this government.
[3:48] It will outlast this conflict. In a world where a single social
[3:52] media post moves markets by trillions in minutes, and when
[3:56] the source of that post sits above most existing legal
[3:59] frameworks, that risk belongs in your thinking, even if it does
[4:03] not yet have a line item in your model.
[4:07] Stay rigorous. Stay sceptical.
[4:09] That's all for this week. We'll be back next week with
[4:11] another story from the front lines of global investing VC10X.
