At 45, Ben had more than 20 years left on his mortgage and was starting to think seriously about retirement. He thought he was good with money, but had no budget, had previously written off buying an investment property and didn’t want to reach 67 with nothing to show for it. Now his mortgage strategy looks very different, he owns an investment property and he’s seeing what could be possible over the next few years. Want to improve your own financial future? ## Transcript

[0:00] I was always pretty good with money, but then I'd go and splurge $2,000 on crack.
[0:05] I don't really want to work till 67 and have nothing.
[0:07] Yeah.
[0:08] Then I found you guys and I went, this is my last crack.
[0:11] Yeah.
[0:11] I'm going to give it a go and see what I can do.
[0:13] How much have you paid off the home loan since you signed up?
[0:16] It's down to $211.
[0:18] $211 from $270.
[0:20] Do you remember what you'd paid off the home loan the year prior?
[0:23] Probably nothing.
[0:24] Not even close to that?
[0:26] 100%.
[0:26] What was your biggest takeaway from the free webinar?
[0:30] The...
[0:34] Today we are joined by Ben.
[0:36] How are we, Ben?
[0:37] Very good.
[0:37] How are you feeling?
[0:38] Nervous.
[0:40] As I just said, you've only just joined Infinity, March of 2026, but this is part of our new series where we want to check in with clients after their first 90 days with Infinity.
[0:49] So we're going to jump into that soon, but before that, I want to know before Infinity, where were you at?
[0:53] What was happening in life?
[0:54] So I've got my PPR, my own property.
[0:59] I'm a barber, so I've got my own little business that I run.
[1:03] No staff or anything.
[1:05] Oh, you're just solely doing it on your own?
[1:07] Solely doing it on my own.
[1:08] Yeah, and that's basically me.
[1:11] Yeah, and what's your home loan balance before you started?
[1:14] It was $270,000.
[1:16] Yep.
[1:17] Any other debts or anything like that?
[1:18] No, it was pretty good.
[1:19] I had no credit card, no personal loans.
[1:22] Yep.
[1:23] Bought cars with cash and yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
[1:26] All the wrong things, but yeah, no other debts.
[1:29] Yeah.
[1:29] Any budget?
[1:30] No budget.
[1:31] No budget.
[1:32] Okay.
[1:33] Now talk to me about what drove you to want to find something like Infinity.
[1:37] Why did you think?
[1:38] Because, you know, looking on paper, you've got a smallish mortgage, no debts, no credit card, running a business.
[1:44] You're doing okay.
[1:45] Yeah.
[1:45] Look, always loved property and that side of things, but just never had the balls to go and do anything and sat on my hands and listened to other people.
[1:59] with all the negative stuff going around.
[2:01] So, yeah, just been looking for a little while.
[2:08] Found you guys, I think Graham popped up on a podcast or a YouTube channel and, yeah, just listened to everything you had to say and went, I've got to do this.
[2:19] I really need to do this.
[2:21] So, yeah.
[2:22] What was it about those podcasts you found that made you kind of really just tweak and go, I think something's here for me?
[2:29] Um, well, all the people are just average, normal people like me.
[2:34] Yeah.
[2:35] Like you.
[2:35] Yeah.
[2:36] So I said, if they can do it, I can do it.
[2:38] So, um, yeah.
[2:39] So it was testimonial podcast that you'd actually found.
[2:42] Okay.
[2:42] Yeah.
[2:43] Yeah.
[2:43] So you just felt like it was relatable.
[2:45] Yeah.
[2:45] Like if they can do it, I can do it.
[2:47] Was it primarily property you were wanting to do or was you also looking to pay the homeland down?
[2:52] It was pay the homeland down and property was my, my goal, but, um.
[2:58] Yeah, just looking forward to retirement really is my main goal.
[3:03] Like I'm 45 now.
[3:05] So yeah, sort of started to look ahead a little bit and went, I don't really want to work till 67 and have nothing.
[3:12] Yeah.
[3:13] Yeah.
[3:13] Yeah, or be thinking I'm still going to have a home loan and have to use my super maybe to pay the rest of it off.
[3:19] Yeah.
[3:19] Yeah.
[3:20] And had you looked at any other advisors before Infinity?
[3:24] I've tried to go down and get investment loans before.
[3:29] Yep.
[3:30] But...
[3:31] I think the last time I did it was about 18 months ago and the mortgage broker said I could have got $400,000 or $380,000.
[3:39] And I was looking around at property going, what am I going to get for that?
[3:44] So that was nearly my last resort.
[3:46] I nearly said, well, I'm out of the market.
[3:49] I can't do anything.
[3:50] But then I found you guys and I went, this is my last crack.
[3:54] I'm going to give it a go and see what I can do.
[3:57] Yeah.
[3:57] And so you'd found some podcasts already.
[3:59] So you'd look it on YouTube.
[4:01] That's where you'd found us first.
[4:03] When did you do first do the webinar, the free webinar?
[4:05] I think I did the free webinar in December.
[4:08] Yep.
[4:10] Um, that would have been 2025, 2025.
[4:12] Um, and from that, I got the whole gist of what G was talking about and I put everything into place sort of myself.
[4:22] I, um, yeah.
[4:23] So you took what you learned from the webinar to implement yourself?
[4:26] Yeah.
[4:28] And saw it worked and I went, right, I'm all in.
[4:32] So it took me a couple of months and...
[4:36] I tried to sign up for the masterclass in January, but I had a few things on.
[4:42] So the first one I could do was March.
[4:43] Yep.
[4:44] And even before the masterclass, I knew I was going to sign up.
[4:48] I just did the masterclass.
[4:50] Oh, you were sold before you did it.
[4:50] Yeah, I did the masterclass just to do the masterclass to sign up.
[4:54] Because that was the prerequisite.
[4:56] Yeah, correct.
[4:57] Yeah.
[4:57] What was your biggest takeaway from the free webinar?
[5:00] Um, the interest calculated daily.
[5:03] Yeah.
[5:03] That was a new thing you'd learn.
[5:05] Yeah.
[5:05] Yeah.
[5:06] So I had a little bit of savings, um, in my bank and I just had that sitting in just a normal bank account, not doing anything.
[5:14] So not even in an offset or redraw?
[5:18] It was 50, $60,000.
[5:20] Um, so yeah, so that, so as soon as G started.
[5:24] put it all into easy format.
[5:27] Like it was so easy.
[5:30] Yeah, I put it all into place and mortgage repayments came down and all that sort of stuff and I went, yeah, I've got to.
[5:36] You're like, shit, he actually is.
[5:37] He knows what he's talking about.
[5:38] He knows what he's talking about.
[5:39] Yeah.
[5:40] And you got that from a free webinar.
[5:41] Correct.
[5:42] Which is really cool.
[5:42] Yeah, free webinar was great.
[5:44] If this story has inspired you to take control of your financial future, your journey starts with our free educational webinar.
[5:51] Click the link below this video to get started today.
[5:54] So then, yeah, fast forward to March, you've done the masterclass, which is a two-day extensive financial education weekend.
[6:00] Yeah.
[6:01] What were some of the biggest takeaways from that weekend?
[6:04] The out-of-debt calculator.
[6:06] It was to see the figures.
[6:08] I think I had on my loan at the time 20-odd years to go.
[6:14] Yep.
[6:15] And it came down to I think it was three and a half or four years or something crazy.
[6:21] Under four years to pay off acres of 270 when you started.
[6:25] Yeah, yeah.
[6:26] On your own too.
[6:27] On my own.
[6:27] Because you're doing this by yourself too.
[6:29] Which is quite difficult.
[6:30] Single income.
[6:31] Yeah.
[6:31] Yeah.
[6:32] So, yeah, when I saw that, I went, yeah, wow, this is me.
[6:36] Yep.
[6:37] So you've learned from the webinar, which we also reiterate too in the masterclass that interest calculated daily.
[6:43] Um, you then go on to actually then crunch your own numbers, figure out how much of interest you're paying per day and then how much you can actually save too.
[6:50] So that was a big takeaway for you.
[6:52] Um, and then you've signed up to work with us from there.
[6:56] Uh, talk to me about the first 90 days.
[6:59] What does that all look like for you?
[7:00] What has it been like going through that strategy process?
[7:03] Yeah.
[7:03] It has been so easy.
[7:05] Yeah.
[7:06] Um, my team is amazing.
[7:07] Amazing.
[7:08] Jacob is a legend.
[7:10] The first phone call I had with him on my onboarding phone call, he was just down to earth and it's easy to get along with.
[7:18] So, um, yeah, the whole process for me has been smooth sailing.
[7:23] I haven't had a problem at all.
[7:25] And do you remember what your initial strategy has looked like?
[7:28] Cause apart from the out of debt strategy, what else have we been able to implement for you?
[7:32] Um, I've got a, uh, investment property now, which is great in Melbourne.
[7:37] Um, and now with the new super things coming along, I've tried to hurry that up and get that through.
[7:47] So I'm just waiting to hear back on that.
[7:49] So fingers crossed.
[7:50] So that's looking like a possibility for you.
[7:52] Yeah.
[7:53] Yeah.
[7:53] Yeah.
[7:54] And then going forward, who knows?
[7:56] Yeah.
[7:57] What do you hope the future looks like for you?
[8:00] Um, well, that's a question for you guys.
[8:03] You're just going to leave it to us to do.
[8:05] A hundred percent.
[8:06] Yeah.
[8:06] So you kind of put all your trust in us.
[8:07] Let the bakers bake, as he says.
[8:09] Yeah.
[8:09] I'm just here for the ride.
[8:11] Like the most I can get out of it as possible, really.
[8:14] Yeah.
[8:14] So you told me to do A, I'll do A. Yeah.
[8:19] And how much have you paid off the home loan since you signed up?
[8:22] It's down to $211.
[8:23] $211 from $270.
[8:25] Yeah.
[8:25] How does that feel?
[8:26] Yeah.
[8:28] Yeah, pretty good.
[8:28] Yeah.
[8:29] And how many sweeps have you done so far?
[8:30] Two.
[8:31] Yeah, I was going to say you would have only done about two since set up and onboarding and all of that.
[8:36] I did sell a motorbike in between there as well.
[8:39] Yeah?
[8:39] Yeah.
[8:39] Yeah.
[8:40] How did I feel doing that?
[8:41] Oh, that was fine.
[8:42] You were fine with it?
[8:43] Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[8:43] That wasn't even part of my strategy.
[8:45] You decided to do it?
[8:46] Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[8:47] I did that.
[8:47] Yeah.
[8:48] Is that just because of your commitment to the process now?
[8:50] A hundred percent, yeah.
[8:51] Yeah.
[8:51] And it needed to go anyway.
[8:52] It was sitting in my barbershop as an ornament, so I wasn't even riding it.
[8:59] It has helped us reduce the mortgage now.
[9:01] Yeah.
[9:01] What have your first two sweeps been?
[9:04] Dollar figures?
[9:05] Yeah.
[9:06] First one was $10,000 and the second one was about $5,000 or something like that.
[9:15] $15,000 in the first two months is pretty good.
[9:17] Yeah.
[9:18] And we would have, like you said, we sold the motorbike as well, had a big savings to do.
[9:21] Yeah, that was where a bit of the $10,000 came from.
[9:23] Yeah.
[9:24] Yeah.
[9:24] Do you remember what you'd paid off the home loan the year prior?
[9:28] Oh, yeah, no, probably nothing.
[9:31] Not even close to that.
[9:32] 100%.
[9:33] Yeah, awesome.
[9:34] And how are you finding following an FFF?
[9:38] That's been really easy.
[9:39] Yeah?
[9:41] I started out with 350 a week.
[9:45] Yeah.
[9:46] It's down to 300, but I can get that down a lot further.
[9:51] I actually swept 1,000 out of that last month.
[9:57] So you'd like built it up and then you just moved it all back in because you weren't spending all of it.
[10:02] Wow.
[10:03] So, yeah.
[10:04] So you've gone from no budget at all.
[10:06] Correct.
[10:06] To now a budget.
[10:07] Yep.
[10:07] Pretty, I think you've done well to get it to that 350, but you're still finding you're not even spending it.
[10:12] Not even spending it, no.
[10:12] And you're moving it back in anyway.
[10:13] Yeah, it's very comfortable.
[10:15] Yeah.
[10:15] Yeah.
[10:16] And how's it felt like going for, because a lot of people demonise the word budget, right?
[10:19] They think it's such a bad thing.
[10:20] I'm going to miss out on so much.
[10:22] Do you feel like you're missing out on anything?
[10:24] Nothing at all.
[10:25] No, no, it's been great.
[10:26] Yes.
[10:27] Yeah.
[10:28] I think I was always pretty good with money, but then I'd go and splurge.
[10:34] So I'd go and have a big weekend and spend $2,000 on crap, you know.
[10:40] So I'd like to think I was good with money, but yeah.
[10:44] Yeah, so we've just got a bit more structure now.
[10:46] Yeah, correct.
[10:47] And you're okay with that.
[10:48] And a bit of accountability too.
[10:50] It's good to have, so I'm a single guy, I don't have a wife or anything nagging me, don't spend.
[10:55] So yeah, it's good to have that accountability there.
[11:00] So Jacob's a bit like that partner.
[11:02] Yeah, correct.
[11:03] So if I can't just go and spend $2,000 at the casino.
[11:07] Because Jacob will see it all.
[11:09] Yeah, correct.
[11:10] And he'll have something to say about it.
[11:11] That's been really good.
[11:12] Yeah, so you've actually liked that part of the process too.
[11:14] Yeah.
[11:15] And has there been anything else as part of your strategy that we've been able to implement for you?
[11:19] Are they the two biggest things?
[11:20] Well, the debt reduction and the investment property or FFF too.
[11:24] Yeah, there's been a couple of biggest things so far.
[11:27] Yeah.
[11:28] Hopefully there might be some more opportunities going forward, but yeah, we'll wait and see.
[11:32] And looking back at when you first found Infinity to when you finally signed up, looking at that time in between, do you wish you had have done it a bit sooner?
[11:41] Oh, of course.
[11:42] Yeah.
[11:42] I wish I'd done it 20 years ago.
[11:44] Um, yeah.
[11:46] Well, funny enough in 2016, I was looking for a company like you guys.
[11:55] So I went to a financial planner and I
[11:59] all they did was sell us insurances.
[12:02] That was it.
[12:02] Life insurances and stuff.
[12:04] And I went, oh, is that what financial planning looks like?
[12:07] Is it?
[12:07] Okay, well, that's what it is.
[12:09] That's what it is.
[12:09] But, yeah, I was looking for someone to do the budgeting and try and get the investment properties and all that sort of stuff.
[12:16] But, yeah.
[12:17] So you've always been looking for that holistic tailored advice, but you just couldn't find it.
[12:22] Yeah.
[12:22] Yeah.
[12:23] Well, that's what's so cool about Infinity, right?
[12:25] We've kind of got all of those umbrellas in the same place and we all talk to each other and now you've got the whole team.
[12:31] Yeah.
[12:31] And it makes life so easy.
[12:32] Yeah.
[12:33] It's a lot of weight lifted off my shoulders.
[12:35] I just let yous do you and yeah.
[12:38] And you feel more confident going forward.
[12:39] 100%.
[12:40] How easy or hard has it been for you to trust Infinity so quickly?
[12:45] Yeah.
[12:46] Not at all.
[12:47] As soon as I knew I was signing up, I let you guys do everything.
[12:53] Like I knew straight away that I was comfortable and I said, you know a lot more than what I do about the financial world and everything that goes on in the world.
[13:04] So, yeah, it was quite easy.
[13:06] Yeah.
[13:07] Yeah.
[13:07] And how did we build that trust so easily for you?
[13:12] Well, I did a lot of research and –
[13:15] All the people you have on board just made sense to me.
[13:22] Yeah, they're just normal people.
[13:25] So you like the testimonials?
[13:27] Oh, 100%.
[13:27] Yeah.
[13:28] Yeah.
[13:29] I suppose that's what makes it real, right?
[13:30] It does.
[13:31] As we said at the beginning, it's very relatable.
[13:34] You look at going, if they can do it, then I can.
[13:36] They're just regular people, regular jobs, kids as well, you know, whatever.
[13:40] So, yeah.
[13:41] Okay.
[13:42] So we built that rapport and trust pretty quick with you.
[13:44] Yep.
[13:45] And what would you say to someone who might be sitting on the fence and umming and ahhing about whether or not they should maybe go from, you know, watching the free webinar to doing a masterclass?
[13:53] Yeah.
[13:55] Well, definitely do the free webinar.
[13:56] Yeah.
[13:57] You've got nothing to lose, right, but an hour of your time.
[14:00] That's right.
[14:00] And there is enough information in there for them to set up and do stuff themselves.
[14:07] That's what you did.
[14:08] Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[14:09] And just give it a crack.
[14:10] Yeah.
[14:12] you'll be so much better for it and I guarantee you'll sign up to the master class within three months.
[14:19] Awesome.
[14:20] So watch this space for you because we've still got a big journey ahead for you.
[14:24] We know how quickly we can pay our home loan off in.
[14:26] We've got a four-year goal.
[14:28] Yep.
[14:28] Hopefully we can tweak a few things and maybe even get it down sooner, but we definitely want to check in with you for a part two, so keep to that strategy.
[14:34] Thank you so much for coming in and sharing.
[14:36] No worries.
[14:37] Anytime.
