## Transcript

[0:00] How many properties are in the pipeline now in the portfolio?
[0:03] We have five properties.
[0:05] Can you believe it?
[0:06] Five.
[0:07] It just blows me away every time I think about it.
[0:10] I never, ever thought that we would have anything close to that.
[0:15] It's amazing.
[0:16] No.
[0:17] Yeah.
[0:18] I guess traditionally it was just we'd get an investment property and go
[0:25] rent it out and go with that.
[0:27] But then meeting you guys and talking to Lou and now we've got five and the journey has just started.
[0:34] I mean, we're just over 12 months in, you know.
[0:37] Money is the root of all evil.
[0:38] The fucking lack of it is not money, the lack of understanding money.
[0:42] When I put that into emphasis, when I realised our psychological effect and how it hit our family, I FDB'd be the fucking way.
[0:48] You are now watching the Money Mentor Podcast with Graeme Holm.
[0:52] Graeme Holm.
[0:53] Graeme Holm.
[0:53] Graeme Holm.
[0:54] Yeah.
[0:57] You're fucking gone.
[0:58] See ya.
[0:59] Hey, guys.
[0:59] I'm Chantal, Relationship Manager here at Infinity, and I have another couple of amazing clients here with me today, Kelly and Tony.
[1:06] Thank you so much for coming.
[1:07] How are you guys doing?
[1:08] Good.
[1:09] Thank you.
[1:09] We're good.
[1:11] We're very chirpy, very excited to be here.
[1:13] Thank you.
[1:13] So good.
[1:14] Well, I want to let some other clients and maybe potential clients know a little bit about you guys because hopefully –
[1:21] something you might say might inspire or motivate them to come on board or just help them along their journey.
[1:27] So give me a little bit of a snapshot just in a couple of minutes of who you are, where you're from and what your journey's been like.
[1:34] A couple of minutes.
[1:36] You go.
[1:38] From Sydney, construction worker.
[1:42] I can say it, I can't spell it.
[1:44] So, earned good money but wasted it, really.
[1:50] Been living with my darling wife and our two boys in Sydney for a bit.
[1:55] Tried Cairns, came back to Sydney and met you guys and now we're much better.
[2:03] Fantastic.
[2:04] Kelly, you got anything in there?
[2:05] No, I just do office work.
[2:09] Yeah, mum of two amazing young men.
[2:12] And we're grandparents of two little bubbers, which we absolutely adore.
[2:18] Yeah, I grew up in Newcastle, so a bit of a country bumpkin compared to Tony.
[2:23] But yeah, living in Sydney now.
[2:25] And yeah, here we are.
[2:26] Terrific.
[2:28] Your journey is a little bit different to a lot of our clients in that you're kind of rent-vesting.
[2:33] We are.
[2:35] How do you find that in the Sydney market?
[2:38] Obviously, it's not always that easy, but how's that working for you?
[2:42] Was it something you had always planned or you just thought, hey, let's go do this?
[2:48] The plan, sorry, sweetheart.
[2:50] No, it's okay.
[2:50] The plan was to move back to mum and dad's place in Sydney.
[2:54] They've got a couple of acres with two houses on the property and we're going to live in the second house and help them grow old and stay on the property.
[3:03] They've decided to sell the property and move into aged care.
[3:08] So we've had to, couldn't really afford to buy anything just at the moment.
[3:13] So we're rent vesting, which is a bit of a shock, to be honest, but it's working for us.
[3:20] Tell me how good it's working for you.
[3:22] How many properties are in the pipeline now, in the portfolio?
[3:25] We have five properties.
[3:27] Can you believe it?
[3:28] Five.
[3:29] It blows me away every time I think about it.
[3:32] I never, ever thought that we would have anything close to that.
[3:37] It's amazing.
[3:38] No.
[3:38] Yeah.
[3:40] I guess traditionally it was just we'd get an investment property and go,
[3:47] rent it out and go with that.
[3:48] But then meeting you guys and talking to Lou and now we've got five and the journey has just started.
[3:56] I mean, we're just over 12 months in, you know, and this is our first roll of the dice and it's amazing.
[4:04] I think the important part is that you've got a team who can show you how to do it, how you can progress and what the next step is, not just set and forget, even though it is for you.
[4:15] It is set and forget for a while, but there's a plan in place.
[4:19] That's it.
[4:20] Yeah, and that's the amazing thing too, that we can always come back and bounce things off you guys, which we have done recently, as you know.
[4:27] So it's just so comforting to know that we can –
[4:33] give you a call, have a chat to somebody and we can pop in and visit and there's a team of you that are looking after us.
[4:41] It's amazing.
[4:42] I don't think there's anything else out there like that.
[4:45] Never heard of anything like this.
[4:46] It's unreal.
[4:47] Yeah, awesome.
[4:47] Well, sometimes it's like wrangling cats with the whole, you know, it is quite a juggernaut and it's part of my job as your relationship manager to make sure everyone's working and pushing forward for you.
[4:57] Yeah.
[4:59] Obviously, a lot of what we discuss is budget related and accounts, making sure that everything is set up correctly.
[5:05] What was budget like before infinity?
[5:09] What was spending like?
[5:10] I think, Tony, you did mention you just used to spend it.
[5:13] Yeah.
[5:13] Good money but just used to spend it.
[5:14] Yeah.
[5:15] Well, we did, yeah.
[5:16] We did, yeah.
[5:17] I would always put – I was one of those ones who had different accounts for different things.
[5:21] So I'd have, you know, the insurances that we had to pay and, you know, and I'd work out how much we'd need to put away each week.
[5:26] So I would do that.
[5:29] So it was sort of budgeting in a very basic way and then –
[5:35] And I'd try to save a bit and then whatever was left, we'd just spend.
[5:38] You know, we'd go out, we'd just spend it.
[5:41] We'd just buy shit, you know.
[5:42] I don't think there was much budgeting at all.
[5:44] There wasn't really.
[5:44] There certainly wasn't a structure to it, was there?
[5:47] No, not really.
[5:48] No, not really.
[5:49] So, yeah, blew a lot of money.
[5:51] I don't even know on what.
[5:53] Yeah, I hear that a lot.
[5:54] I hear that a lot.
[5:56] It's not magic.
[5:57] It's literally just having a plan for your money.
[6:00] How is it different now?
[6:02] Much different.
[6:04] You know the thing that really blows me away is that...
[6:09] I would always stress about bills.
[6:11] So, you know, well, shivers, that's the electricity bill, whatever, and making sure we had enough money to pay for them.
[6:20] But now there's that, you know, the bills and savings, everything goes in there and there's an amount that just stays there and it just keeps growing and growing.
[6:29] But there's always the money there.
[6:31] Like I don't know.
[6:34] It's so simple.
[6:36] But it just works incredibly.
[6:38] There's always the money.
[6:38] I'm not worried about it anymore.
[6:40] I don't worry about it anymore, which is unreal.
[6:42] That's incredible.
[6:43] So many people do say that.
[6:45] It takes the worry out of it because there's always money in that buffer.
[6:49] Yeah.
[6:49] You've always got money to pay for your rego or your insurance or whatever it is, and it's a simple process.
[6:55] Yeah.
[6:56] It's not magic, but it's almost like magic though.
[6:58] It is, yeah.
[6:59] Yeah.
[7:01] Have there been any little hiccups along the way for you guys?
[7:07] There has been a few.
[7:08] Don't he's face gave the whole thing away then?
[7:13] I think there's been a few life moments for Kelly's family and for my family which have sent our budget into spirals.
[7:24] But we have had a couple of hiccups along the way with the spending and not sticking to the budget.
[7:32] Yeah.
[7:33] It felt like I'm cheating on someone, like cheating on you because you watch our stuff.
[7:40] Shit, Shani will know that I've spent this much more money.
[7:43] But it's nice having a structure and it's nice knowing that that's our budget and that's what we can spend our money on.
[7:52] So I do like the structure.
[7:56] And the fact that, you know, when –
[7:58] so earlier in the year mum passed and the fact that, you know, I just messaged you and said this is what's happening so I'm going to be spending because I had to stay up north and you were so kind and considerate and caring and this is life and this is what happens and you just do what you need to do for the time that you need to do it.
[8:18] It was lovely and understanding.
[8:20] I really appreciate it.
[8:21] Very helped.
[8:22] Very much helped.
[8:24] Thank you.
[8:24] I think though because...
[8:27] you're in a good position and had some good foundations, a little hiccup along the way, you know, life happens and it can throw you a bit of a curve ball.
[8:37] But you had that backing to be able to, it wasn't detrimental.
[8:41] No, not at all.
[8:43] And I guess what brought you back to, hang on, we've got to get back on track.
[8:49] Knowing you're looking over our shoulder.
[8:51] Good.
[8:51] Excellent.
[8:52] Good answer.
[8:55] It's looking forward, knowing that we've got a limited work-life left, so we need to get our butt into gear and make sure that we can live freely and go out and do what we want to do when we retire.
[9:08] So we've got to come back and we've got to stick to the budget.
[9:12] We've got to do what we've been, you know, assigned or told to do
[9:17] So that we can achieve those goals.
[9:18] I think it's just reminding yourself all the time that we've got to get there.
[9:23] Yep, having that goal.
[9:25] And with, I guess, the budget in place and the FFF and the salary and bills,
[9:32] Has that caused, I guess, any change in your relationship?
[9:37] Is it better teamwork or is it just more debate about spending?
[9:41] I've spent a few arguments because I'm not allowed to spend as much money as I'd like to.
[9:47] That's right.
[9:48] That all came from me.
[9:50] Do you know what?
[9:51] No dramas at all.
[9:52] I think...
[9:53] Obviously, there'll be a hiccup here and there, but Kelly is adamant, and I am too, that that's our spend, right?
[10:02] That's our budget.
[10:02] So we stick to it as best we can.
[10:06] Yeah, well, we try to stick to it, don't we?
[10:08] We're not always perfect.
[10:09] Well, we've gone from 20-something years of being together and having no budget and no limitations and I want that and let's buy that and let's go out and let's do this,
[10:19] within reason, not frivolously, which is a big word for me.
[10:24] Well done.
[10:25] But to structure.
[10:27] And within 12 months we are structured and we're getting it squared away.
[10:32] Do you feel like you're missing out on anything?
[10:35] I don't think so.
[10:36] And even if we do, it only lasts fleetingly because, you know, I don't need that extra thing anyway.
[10:44] I mean, if I've got Kelly, that's all I need.
[10:46] Oh, gross.
[10:51] I mean, that's lovely.
[10:55] That was genuine too.
[10:56] I can tell.
[10:57] All right, last question.
[11:00] Finish this sentence.
[11:01] Infinity made me realise I didn't need to spend as much money on.
[11:10] We used to buy, both of us would buy a coffee every morning.
[11:14] We've got a machine at home, make a nice coffee in the morning at home and then on the way to work you'd buy another one, which is ridiculous.
[11:20] I mean it sounds so simple and trivial but it was 50 bucks a week just on coffee between the two of us at least.
[11:29] It all adds up?
[11:30] Yeah, it does.
[11:32] Every year I'm not even going to do the math.
[11:33] Now nobody misspells your name when you've ordered your coffee.
[11:35] Oh, yeah.
[11:37] No love hearts.
[11:38] It's consistently good because you make it yourself.
[11:41] That's right.
[11:42] Do I answer it or do you have to ask the question again?
[11:45] Do you want me to set it up again?
[11:47] No, no, no, it's okay.
[11:48] Shit.
[11:49] Shit.
[11:51] Just spending money on shit basically because it's easy to do when there's no budget.
[11:58] So when those times, I guess not really the last question, when those times come up that you think, oh, hey, maybe I'll go buy that thing, what stops you?
[12:07] You do.
[12:09] No, no, no.
[12:11] Like Kelly alluded to before, having the goal that we have, that you guys have set in place together, understanding that if we do buy those things or make that purchase, then it kicks that goal a little further down the road and we would like to get to that goal as soon as possible.
[12:32] So if we can shave that budget a little more rather than going over it, then we can get there a little bit, a little quicker.
[12:38] Yeah.
[12:38] So that's it.
[12:39] Accelerate it.
[12:40] So that's fantastic.
[12:42] And it's awesome to be working with you guys.
[12:44] You're fun.
[12:45] We have fun.
[12:46] We do.
[12:47] And, you know, you're kicking some big goals, got lots of properties in the portfolio.
[12:51] Yeah.
[12:51] It's amazing.
[12:52] Very exciting.
[12:53] Still, yeah, still can't believe it.
[12:55] So we're thrilled to have you here.
[12:56] Thank you so much for your time.
[12:58] Enjoy your weekend and we will chat soon.
[13:00] Yes, we will.
[13:01] Really appreciate it.
[13:03] You're fucking gone.
[13:03] See you.
