Daniel and Whitney share their financial journey from buying their first block of land in 2010 while living with parents, to building a thoughtfully designed forever home and aggressively paying down their mortgage. They describe a disciplined, no-debt lifestyle, avoiding car loans, cutting unnecessary expenses and subscriptions, and increasing repayments to hit the goal of debt freedom. After hitting a plateau, they discovered Infinity through podcasts and seminars, which clarified strategy, budgeting, and conservative borrowing for investment properties. With new budgeting systems, offset accounts and a clear plan, they quickly paid off the home loan, acquired two investment properties, and improved financial organisation. They emphasise understanding the strategy, being conservative with income assumptions, involving their kids in money lessons, and celebrating milestones. Both recommend exploring Infinity’s free resources as a starting point for anyone wanting to accelerate wealth-building without overextending. [0:00] the way that it's explained and everything like that is that the structure is in place to set your, from your financial position and your salary.
[0:08] So my biggest fear was to never overextend and get yourself in trouble.
[0:15] And the way that obviously the plan and the structure is in place, it's so you cannot get yourself in trouble if you stick to the plan.
[0:24] Money is the root of all evil.
[0:26] The fucking lack of it is not money.
[0:28] The lack of understanding money.
[0:30] When I put that into emphasis, when I realised our psychological effect and how it hit our family, I FTB in the fucking way.
[0:36] You are now watching the Money Mentor podcast with Graham Holmes.
[0:40] Graham Holmes.
[0:41] Graham Holmes.
[0:44] Some people talk about building wealth.
[0:47] Whitney and Daniel just got on with it.
[0:49] They bought land in 2010 and nearly paid it off before breaking ground.
[0:53] They built their home in 2013, married in 2014, welcomed their kids in 2015 and 2018.
[1:02] Through all of it, they were working, striving to be mortgage-free, a teacher and a firefighter.
[1:08] No financial strategy behind any of it, just discipline, consistency and a quiet determination to own their home outright.
[1:17] But they knew they could be doing more,
[1:20] Infinity gave them something they'd never had, a structure complementing the effort they were already putting in.
[1:28] And in less than six months, their mortgage was gone.
[1:32] Now, they also have two investment properties.
[1:35] A combined portfolio worth $3.2 million.
[1:38] And they are just getting started.
[1:39] This is Daniel and Whitney.
[1:42] This is Daniel and Whitney.
[1:45] Welcome back to the Money Mentor Podcast.
[1:47] We have another episode of Changing Lives Financially.
[1:50] Today we have Daniel and Whitney.
[1:51] How are we guys?
[1:52] Good.
[1:52] Thank you.
[1:53] How are you?
[1:53] I'm doing very, very well.
[1:55] Are we still feeling a bit nervous?
[1:56] Yep.
[1:56] Literally, yeah.
[1:57] Definitely.
[1:58] No one tells your story better than you guys, so it's just a friendly chat.
[2:01] And that's where I want to start.
[2:02] Tell me where you guys have come from, what led you to all the way up until actually meeting Infinity.
[2:07] I want all the ins and outs.
[2:09] So, yeah, 2010, Whitney and I, yeah, bought our block of land.
[2:14] It was, what, $145,000?
[2:19] Whitney was just finishing uni and I was a fourth-year tradesman in electrical stuff.
[2:25] So, yeah, still living at home.
[2:28] We –
[2:29] So this was the first home both of you were in?
[2:31] This was the first home.
[2:32] Yeah, we were both living with our parents.
[2:34] And so both of our mums lived or worked in local places.
[2:40] One was the council, one was the supermarket.
[2:41] And then they would see each other during the day and they would discuss who was, what they were cooking.
[2:47] Yep.
[2:47] For dinner that night and that's where they knew where we would be, which house we would be in.
[2:52] So, yeah.
[2:53] We'd do the old phone call at 4 o'clock in the afternoon, watch your mum cooking.
[2:57] Yeah.
[2:57] To decide whose house we want to be at.
[2:59] To decide on whose place we're going to stay at.
[3:00] Whose house we're staying at, yeah.
[3:03] Yeah.
[3:03] Yeah, so living with our parents and just saving.
[3:09] And then, yeah, bought the block of land and then we just tried to pay that off as much as we could.
[3:15] As quickly as possible, yeah.
[3:17] So you already had that mindset that you wanted to do that.
[3:20] Okay.
[3:21] But we were still, like we were young, so we were still going out and spending money on stuff.
[3:26] Yeah.
[3:26] Still doing bits and pieces for holidays and things.
[3:29] So we weren't full blown saving money and paying it off as much as what we probably could have.
[3:37] But we also knew we didn't want to get in ourselves too deep.
[3:40] We wanted to get something a little bit better than just the first home.
[3:44] Yep.
[3:45] So, yeah, so that was our aim is just me becoming towards the end of my apprenticeship to basically just knock it off as quickly as possible.
[3:57] So hence we'll still live in a home and see what our parents were here.
[4:01] How much they put up with for how long.
[4:03] Yeah, mooch off them for as long as possible.
[4:06] Um, yeah.
[4:08] We also wanted to build a house that we would be in for a long time.
[4:11] So both our parents had bought houses and were in there long term.
[4:15] Like my parents have had the same house, their first home and they still live there.
[4:19] They've never changed it.
[4:20] Never changed it.
[4:21] Their whole life.
[4:21] Wow.
[4:22] So we're happy to do that.
[4:24] Well, that's what we're kind of planning, to build a house that we could stay in forever.
[4:28] Yeah.
[4:28] A forever home.
[4:29] Yeah.
[4:29] And so that's why we decided the land and the build.
[4:31] Yeah.
[4:31] And then we did the build.
[4:32] Yeah.
[4:34] Yeah.
[4:34] Yeah.
[4:34] We didn't want to just get the generic three bedroom cookie cutter house.
[4:39] So we probably spend a lot more than initially the area sort of over capitalized, I guess, for the area.
[4:49] So we probably could have bought it.
[4:50] Do you still think that's seeing construction costs now?
[4:52] No.
[4:52] Definitely not.
[4:53] Definitely not.
[4:54] No.
[4:54] We did well.
[4:55] Nah, so like the house build that we built, especially back then in, well, we've moved in, what, 2013?
[5:01] Okay.
[5:02] That was around your $350,000-odd grand.
[5:05] Yeah.
[5:06] But our aim prior to that was let's pay off the house, sorry, the land as quick as possible so we have a minimal mortgage.
[5:13] Yeah.
[5:15] But yeah, the cumulative amount, we probably could have got a sizable mortgage.
[5:22] generically built house yeah um but yeah we're we're extremely chuffed because when he works 300 meters down the road both of our kids go to the same school yeah when he's a school teacher and uh yeah it's been great
[5:36] And what's kind of rolled on since then that eventually led you to kind of question things a bit more and go, we want to work with somebody like Infinity?
[5:44] Well, that was a lot.
[5:45] That was like, what, 12 years ago?
[5:47] And at the start we were just paying...
[5:52] We didn't have anything.
[5:54] So we didn't have furniture.
[5:55] We didn't have the backyard.
[5:57] It was just a mud pit around the house.
[6:01] So then for the first probably five, six years, we probably just paid minimum, did the concreting.
[6:09] We've built a shed.
[6:10] We've done the backyard.
[6:12] We've, you know, did all around the house.
[6:14] And so we only paid minimum or a little bit more than minimum.
[6:17] Yeah.
[6:17] Yeah.
[6:18] And then Daniel's always wanted to be debt free by 40.
[6:22] And so then he started, let's just pay it off.
[6:25] Yeah.
[6:26] So then he just kept upping what we're paying and upping what we're paying.
[6:28] And each time the bank would message him and say, you can pay, you know, this smaller amount, Daniel was pretty much like middle finger.
[6:36] He upped it again.
[6:37] Pretty much.
[6:38] Upped it again.
[6:38] Upped it again.
[6:39] So you were our people before you even met us.
[6:41] Yeah.
[6:42] So we'd get the letter from the bank saying, hey, you can reduce your monthly minimum because we were paying overs a little bit.
[6:50] Not a huge amount, but overs, maybe an extra hundred bucks a week or a fortnight or something like that.
[6:55] And I'm like, Whitney, these pricks.
[6:58] want us to hang around forever.
[7:00] I'm like, fuck these blokes.
[7:01] So without any budget or anything like that, I sort of just will, the only way I know how to pay it off quicker is to up the repayments.
[7:09] Yeah.
[7:11] So reduced it from a monthly payment to a fortnightly payment, then a weekly payment and just emptied the bank account.
[7:20] Whatever we could afford, we did.
[7:22] Yeah.
[7:22] So whatever's left over, you would just put it on.
[7:24] Yeah.
[7:25] And this was probably the last, probably three,
[7:27] three or four years I probably went hard at all that.
[7:31] Um, and we sort of got ourselves in a pretty stable position, um, money wise and whatnot.
[7:38] And then I decided to change career altogether.
[7:42] So yeah, I, I pulled the pin on.
[7:45] Cause you were a tradie.
[7:46] I was a tradesman.
[7:47] Yeah.
[7:47] Yeah.
[7:47] Oh yeah.
[7:48] I was a qualified tradesman.
[7:49] Yep.
[7:50] Um, in that for close to 15 years, I'd say by the time I changed over and, um,
[7:55] Yeah.
[7:56] After a bit of a grind and five years of attempting and applications and whatnot, I've become a firefighter.
[8:02] Yeah.
[8:04] So, yeah, going from qualified tradesmen wages to basically restarting at 35 again.
[8:11] Yeah.
[8:12] And, yeah, so that sort of knocked us back a little bit as in payment-wise and income and salary.
[8:18] Yeah.
[8:19] It never bothered us though because whatever we earn, like we don't have.
[8:24] We live to our means.
[8:25] Yeah.
[8:26] It never bothered us.
[8:27] And I've gone from working full-time and then I was part-time for about ten years with the kids.
[8:32] Yeah.
[8:32] Or nine, eight years.
[8:34] Something like that.
[8:34] Worked only part-time and I only just gone back last year to full-time work again.
[8:39] And, yeah, we only spend what we have.
[8:42] Yeah.
[8:43] It's never been an issue.
[8:44] We've never really had like any car loans or anything like that.
[8:50] Like whatever we earn, we save to spend.
[8:55] My biggest fear is getting over my head.
[8:58] Yeah.
[8:58] Really.
[8:59] So that's why, yeah, I was always, that's probably a bit of my, a bit of dad in there as well to not spend what you don't have or protect what you have sort of thing.
[9:10] Yeah.
[9:10] Yeah.
[9:10] And everything we've bought, we've bought with our money.
[9:13] We've never taken out loans.
[9:15] No.
[9:15] Yeah.
[9:15] Other than the home loan for a house.
[9:18] Yeah.
[9:18] We've never taken out car.
[9:20] We don't take.
[9:21] We did borrow for the caravan though.
[9:23] Oh, the caravan.
[9:23] No, we took it out of the.
[9:24] Yeah.
[9:25] Redrawed out of it.
[9:26] So it came off the home loan.
[9:27] Yes.
[9:28] It was a 30 year or 26 year by that time.
[9:30] Yeah.
[9:31] So with a bit of refinancing and whatnot too, we bought the caravan and.
[9:37] Yeah.
[9:38] Mucked around with that for a couple of years, but I wouldn't say we didn't use it enough.
[9:42] We used it quite a lot.
[9:43] Yeah.
[9:44] But there was a lot of assets sitting there, depreciating.
[9:48] Yeah.
[9:49] And we're paying, our mortgage had obviously gone up.
[9:53] And our kids would rather sleep in a swag.
[9:56] Yeah.
[9:56] Really?
[9:56] Yes.
[9:56] And then the caravan?
[9:57] Yes.
[9:58] Oh, that is so funny because some of the people we work with and we're like, okay, can we sell the caravan?
[10:02] There's 80K off the home loan and they're like, we're like, can you hire a caravan?
[10:06] Can we just go tents or a swag?
[10:08] And they're like, what?
[10:09] A swag?
[10:11] You've clearly never caravaned.
[10:12] That's funny.
[10:13] Your kids are like, they actually prefer it.
[10:14] Yeah, they prefer it.
[10:14] Yeah.
[10:14] Yep.
[10:15] Yep.
[10:15] If they could be crawling around in the mud.
[10:17] Yeah, that'd occur.
[10:18] The caravan was, it was literally just a big thing on wheels where the kids just slept.
[10:23] It was a unit on wheels.
[10:24] We didn't do anything.
[10:25] Because you were outdoors when you were caravan.
[10:27] Yeah, we never ever did it.
[10:28] Yeah.
[10:29] So we didn't need it.
[10:30] No.
[10:31] No, it was great.
[10:32] But.
[10:33] Yeah, once we got rid of that, then we reduced down the home loan to a manageable point.
[10:40] We just went ballistic at it.
[10:42] Just tried to smash it out.
[10:44] As much as you could.
[10:45] So you guys had the mindset.
[10:47] The mindset was there.
[10:49] So why infinity?
[10:50] Yeah.
[10:52] Well, you wanted to get investment properties.
[10:55] Yeah.
[10:55] You didn't know how.
[10:57] We definitely looked at contacting like a buyer's agent and the bank and whatnot.
[11:04] And basically all they said to us was open up a new line of credit or –
[11:10] create a new redraw or something like that, borrowing against the existing loan we already have or refinancing, sorry is the word.
[11:16] Yeah.
[11:17] Um, and that we're going to offer us an act like, because we were in such an advantageous position with the home loan.
[11:26] that they were going to throw a million, 1.1 or 1.2 or whatever, as a loan amount.
[11:34] Against the home, yeah.
[11:35] Against the home.
[11:36] And I just was like, holy shit.
[11:38] So they're going to throw this large sum of money at us for us to just, without any information.
[11:44] Or advice.
[11:44] Or advice.
[11:45] Or strategy.
[11:46] Strategy.
[11:47] And I did engage a couple of buyers, agents and whatnot just to see
[11:53] what was about or a little bit of investigating and stuff like that.
[11:57] And I was not really getting the right feeling from anyone.
[12:03] It was more that they were sort of,
[12:07] Saw you as a bit of a cash cow and they weren't, I wouldn't say not willing to do the work, but not actually providing information for what they're doing.
[12:19] So, yeah, I sort of toiled over that for a while and figured out, well, there's got to be something better out there.
[12:27] And, yeah, as most people, G opens up in your socials and whatnot.
[12:34] So I'm like, what's this like about?
[12:35] Yeah.
[12:36] swearing and carrying on and yeah so i had a look a bit further into it um it was and and listened to that uh is it both sides podcast yeah yeah and i was just like holy shit like been doing doing this all wrong yeah there's better ways to sharpen it up um
[12:54] And, yeah, just that sort of took me down the rabbit hole of World of Infinity sort of stuff.
[13:00] And, yeah, just sort of went nose first into all that information, did the free web seminar.
[13:08] Yeah.
[13:08] And that blew my mind.
[13:09] And immediately I'm telling you to.
[13:11] Yeah.
[13:11] And then.
[13:12] We had to change absolutely everything about everything.
[13:14] We're just straight from the webinar.
[13:15] And then I got lectured.
[13:16] You have to do this, this, this, this, this, this, this, like in the banking.
[13:20] Don't do this.
[13:21] Don't do that.
[13:21] If you're going to spend five for this, you have to get out of this account.
[13:24] And then he's like, we need to change everything around.
[13:27] And you haven't even watched a webinar yet or a masterclass or anything.
[13:31] I'm like, get rid of the credit card.
[13:32] Piss this off.
[13:33] Stop doing that.
[13:34] I've got a credit card and it's got all these points.
[13:35] Like I can go to Maya and get all this free stuff.
[13:37] And then just like, you just have to wait.
[13:39] Let me go to Maya, get the free stuff.
[13:41] And then, and then you could do like, yeah.
[13:43] I'm like, just give me my points.
[13:47] Um, yeah.
[13:48] And just, yeah, looking further and further into, into all that, I probably went a little bit too far.
[13:55] Cause when did you find us?
[13:57] Uh, that would have been.
[13:58] It was a little while before.
[13:59] Yeah.
[14:00] Was it the 2024 both sides podcast?
[14:02] That was the first one I listened to, but I reckon it was early 25.
[14:05] Yeah.
[14:06] Where I was starting to, where, where I'd actually gone head first into all the, all G's information.
[14:12] Yep.
[14:12] Yeah.
[14:13] Um, and sort of.
[14:15] An amateur attempt at trying to recreate his teaching.
[14:18] I don't need to pay you.
[14:19] I watch your free webinar.
[14:20] Well, no, that wasn't the case.
[14:21] It was more just, I don't know, I just needed to.
[14:24] You hesitate.
[14:25] You hesitate.
[14:26] Hesitate.
[14:27] I just thought.
[14:27] Yeah, didn't know what he was jumping into.
[14:28] And then you had that friend at work that must have joined in.
[14:32] And so you were talking to him.
[14:34] Yeah.
[14:35] And then I think he, knowing someone real.
[14:37] Yeah.
[14:39] pushed you over.
[14:40] Yeah.
[14:40] Well, one of my mentors at work, Benny, he said to me, like we just having a chat over the mess table and talking about bits and pieces as firefighters do, there's someone scheming here, someone scheming that, this is the best way, almost like just talking amongst a group of friends.
[14:59] Everyone's got the best idea.
[15:00] Yeah.
[15:01] Yeah, Benny and I were sort of just chatting and I said, oh, have a look at this.
[15:04] And he's like, yeah, I'm already a member.
[15:06] Yeah.
[15:07] I'm like, what do you mean?
[15:08] So he and I went a bit of a deep dive on all that sort of stuff.
[15:12] And, yeah, he said the two-day seminar will absolutely blow your mind.
[15:19] I'm like, all right, well, if Benny's saying something, I should probably look into this a little bit more aggressively.
[15:27] So, yeah, next weekend I booked in the two-day seminar and, yeah, just completely blown away.
[15:33] I'm like, Winnie, we're doing this now.
[15:35] Did you join on the Masked Us?
[15:37] Did you watch as well?
[15:38] Yeah.
[15:38] Yeah.
[15:40] Winnie was in and out a little bit.
[15:41] In and out.
[15:42] In and out.
[15:43] We also had kids.
[15:44] Yeah, she wasn't completely on the same wavelength.
[15:48] Yeah, not as intense.
[15:50] Not intense.
[15:51] No, not as intense.
[15:53] So money side, I don't spend money.
[15:57] I don't waste money.
[15:58] Yeah.
[15:58] But I've also just been happy in life just to – my only goal prior to this in life with money-wise is just to pay the mortgage off.
[16:08] Yeah.
[16:08] And just be comfortable and happy.
[16:10] Yeah.
[16:10] I just want to be comfortable, happy and don't owe money.
[16:13] Yeah.
[16:13] So Daniel has now at the stage where he was when we were watching the masterclass, he's gone further and he wants that but then he wants to see what else he can do.
[16:24] Yeah.
[16:25] Whereas we weren't on the same level then.
[16:28] No.
[16:28] No.
[16:29] I want to sort of provide...
[16:32] something for the kids to look at or have as well, sort of have a bit more inspiration for them as well.
[16:37] Yeah.
[16:38] Don't want to become multimillionaire or anything like that.
[16:41] It's more just to see what we can do, what is possible, because we still don't know.
[16:45] We've only been with Infinity for a little over six months now and it's,
[16:49] Already gone from where we came in here to, I don't know, it just keeps going up.
[16:53] Yeah.
[16:53] Yeah.
[16:54] So.
[16:55] Cause you officially joined August of 2025.
[16:56] Correct.
[16:56] So you're still very new.
[16:58] Yeah.
[16:58] Yeah.
[16:59] And even just setting the budgets and, and rearranging our finances so that everything wasn't scattered.
[17:07] Yeah, because you did have the multiple bank accounts.
[17:10] We did.
[17:11] Yeah.
[17:11] Yeah, we did.
[17:13] But, yeah, like even knocking off the credit card, there was so many little subscriptions and odds and ends that we, I don't know, it might have been like.
[17:23] It wouldn't have been a massive amount, but it could have been $100 to $200 a month of just junk that we didn't even use.
[17:29] I'm like, what is this?
[17:30] Just wasted money.
[17:31] Yeah.
[17:31] So that was a bit of a – just to organise all that.
[17:34] But consolidating all of our efforts.
[17:38] Like we've always had joint bank accounts and all that sort of stuff, so that wasn't a problem.
[17:43] But setting a budget –
[17:47] Was pretty much a game changer, wasn't it?
[17:50] Just even making it like having all of those ducks in a row.
[17:55] Yeah.
[17:56] Accelerated what we were already doing.
[17:58] Yeah.
[17:59] And it opened up so many doors.
[18:00] Yeah.
[18:01] Like we've gained two investment properties almost immediately.
[18:05] Yeah.
[18:07] And paid the house off quicker than we thought we were going to.
[18:11] And saved money for a family trip.
[18:13] Yeah.
[18:14] Yep.
[18:14] So, yeah.
[18:15] And it's just happened so quick.
[18:18] Yeah.
[18:19] Because you've already paid the home off.
[18:20] Yes.
[18:21] Yeah.
[18:21] Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[18:22] In such a short amount of time.
[18:23] Yeah.
[18:24] We were very close just prior to starting.
[18:26] Yeah.
[18:27] And, yeah, we've, again, paid that last little chunk off, which was about 40-odd, 50-odd grand, I think.
[18:34] Yeah.
[18:36] Within a couple of months.
[18:38] And, yeah, we're already in the black again and we're planning a trip to go to Japan to sort of celebrate the win.
[18:45] Yeah.
[18:46] I'm so glad you're actually celebrating the win.
[18:48] Yeah.
[18:49] I think it's very important to really share those milestones, especially with the kids.
[18:52] Have you told them that that's what mum and dad have done?
[18:54] They know it.
[18:55] You know, they know everything.
[18:56] Yeah.
[18:57] They ask questions.
[18:57] They know everything.
[18:58] They're definitely too young to completely understand exactly what it all means.
[19:01] Yeah, no, but they know...
[19:04] Yeah, like we've explained the budget to them because they keep asking.
[19:08] They're kids.
[19:09] You go down the street, they want something.
[19:11] So we've explained the budget, why, what we're doing, why we're doing it, what it would do for us in the future.
[19:20] They're good.
[19:20] Yeah, they're great.
[19:21] They're good to understand and they're...
[19:23] And doing like the overseas trip and all that sort of stuff.
[19:26] Like they're seeing that what we're doing is actually having some sort of benefit.
[19:32] Yeah.
[19:32] Because obviously if you don't have a little reward for them.
[19:34] Of course, yeah.
[19:34] Every now and then they just think mum and dad are.
[19:37] Mum and dad are mean and they don't give us anything.
[19:39] Mum and dad are being tight arses here.
[19:42] But yeah, it's good.
[19:44] Yeah.
[19:45] I mean, you guys, like I said, you didn't have a lot of a, much of a home loan left to pay off.
[19:50] So what was it in those two days sitting with G and all of our other speakers that made you go, I mean, look, we've been doing it.
[19:56] We've been paying, smashing the home loan off.
[19:58] I know you said budget was one thing.
[20:00] What else was made you guys go, this is something we want to be a part of?
[20:04] Um, just the way he can break down the numbers of, um, everything really like, um, how the, how the rapid repay works actually putting, um, the numbers from a $500,000 mortgage and what that equates to if you pay the minimums.
[20:26] So I'm like.
[20:28] we're almost at the point where we were paid it off, but there's gotta be something more.
[20:34] We want to not only just pay off our, our mortgage and considering we'd already been so close, we want to prepare for the future.
[20:42] Yeah.
[20:43] Yeah.
[20:43] We want to get the best people in the business to, to show us the right direction.
[20:50] Cause we weren't getting in that direction from any other bank.
[20:53] Yeah.
[20:54] They were more than happy to sell us product.
[20:56] And tell you to stick to minimum repayments.
[20:59] Yeah.
[20:59] Yeah.
[21:00] Encourage it.
[21:00] Yeah.
[21:01] Keep pushing us back to that.
[21:04] And yeah, like most people, they see your interest rate as the best deal.
[21:11] Yeah.
[21:11] It's going to pay the minimum amount.
[21:12] Because what else are they going to sell you on?
[21:15] Yeah.
[21:15] And to be honest, I completely didn't understand any of that.
[21:18] I'm like, oh, old mate's getting 0.5 better than we're getting.
[21:22] Why is he getting better?
[21:23] I'll jump to them.
[21:24] But then you're just starting the ball over again, which I didn't quite understand.
[21:28] Yeah.
[21:29] But yeah, putting that into context, just like, holy shit, this is next level.
[21:34] Yeah.
[21:35] Okay.
[21:35] So even though you were still following a lot of what our core principles are, you still found a lot of value in what we were teaching.
[21:42] And you've admitted that there was some stuff you still didn't understand.
[21:45] And you did mention that you, part of it was you wanted to set yourselves up for the future.
[21:49] What is, what did that look like for you guys at the time?
[21:51] Well, you've always wanted to get investment properties, but didn't know how.
[21:56] Yeah.
[21:56] To go about it.
[21:58] And...
[22:00] I think I was looking for someone or something to guide us in the right direction.
[22:06] Yeah.
[22:07] We're busy.
[22:08] I work shift work.
[22:09] Whitney's working full time again now.
[22:13] So I'd rather pay someone with the right information to help us, give us an informed decision.
[22:20] Yeah.
[22:21] It just didn't feel like anyone that we engaged was giving us that.
[22:24] Yeah.
[22:25] And I thought, well, yeah.
[22:27] obviously um benny from work he's obviously said to us like this is this is brilliant yeah um have a look at this and he seemed to he was telling me that it's absolutely amazing just not only the way that everything's explained is that there's a plan involved you're not just buying a house for for now and then sitting on it for the next 15 20 years there's a plan to
[22:51] to buy a property now to then potentially roll it over in the next three to four years, five years for a step up plan.
[23:00] Whereas any other information I was getting from buyers agents or anything like that was, yeah, no worries.
[23:06] Give us your 20 odd grand, 15, 20 odd grand and you'll never hear from them again.
[23:12] Yeah.
[23:12] And I heard horror stories from other friends who have done similar things.
[23:15] Yeah.
[23:15] Yeah.
[23:17] Made a little bit of made money on those investments and stuff like that, but it's literally no, like you make that transaction and they just disappear off in the sunset.
[23:24] Yeah.
[23:25] Yeah.
[23:26] Yeah.
[23:27] And you mentioned you didn't like the idea of overextending yourself or, you know, borrowing too much money.
[23:32] How did you get past that fear?
[23:34] to go and buy the investment properties you did buy?
[23:36] Because we've got to borrow money to buy them.
[23:38] Of course.
[23:38] Yeah.
[23:39] Yeah.
[23:40] Yeah, well, the investment properties we've just currently bought well exceeded.
[23:48] Well, we never did.
[23:48] Yeah, when we heard the numbers, I nearly vomited.
[23:52] It was very nice.
[23:52] So when we started, everyone's like, oh, you're in such a great position.
[23:55] You're in such a good position.
[23:56] You could do this.
[23:56] You could do that.
[23:57] And they're just...
[23:58] It kind of pumped us up to think, oh, maybe we could.
[24:00] Yeah.
[24:01] Like, okay.
[24:02] You start believing it is actually real.
[24:03] Yeah.
[24:04] And so then when it started happening, but then they were big numbers for the investment properties.
[24:11] But then it was explained so well to us.
[24:14] Everything's explained.
[24:15] It's like for dummies.
[24:17] Yeah.
[24:17] Yeah.
[24:19] Yeah, like step-by-step what we would actually be paying and how – and we're like, oh, okay, so it's probably less than what we were paying when Daniel used to bump up our home loan.
[24:29] Like at the max he was paying at one stage is less.
[24:34] Like we're going to be paying less for our home – like these home loans.
[24:39] Yeah.
[24:39] The way that it's structured.
[24:40] Yeah.
[24:41] Yeah.
[24:41] Yeah.
[24:42] Yeah, the structure is obviously well and truly thought out from our income.
[24:48] Yeah.
[24:49] And through my work, I do get a bit of overtime and stuff like that, but we worked it off at my base wage.
[24:55] So you actually only wanted to be conservative and –
[24:58] Use the base.
[24:59] Initially.
[24:59] Yeah, of course.
[25:00] Yeah.
[25:01] Because overtime is not guaranteed, especially in the fire brigade and whatnot.
[25:06] So it's definitely any extra money that I do make through overtime and some casual work that I do as well on the side is put back into those offset accounts to then work against those home loans.
[25:20] Yeah.
[25:20] Yeah.
[25:21] But with that conservative income or salary between us both, I knew we were golden.
[25:30] Yeah.
[25:31] So, yeah, and just putting it all in line with the finances and plan has been easy to follow.
[25:44] Yeah.
[25:44] Yeah.
[25:44] Yeah.
[25:44] So you have that trust now that you feel at ease about now borrowing money to buy these properties and, yeah.
[25:51] And why do you think the strategy, are you guys understanding the strategy is so important?
[25:55] Because obviously we can write a strategy, we understand it, we trust it, and we can sit here and be like, trust us, we get it, so just follow along.
[26:02] Why do you think it's so important we bring you into the fold?
[26:06] If you don't understand what's going on.
[26:07] Yeah, you don't know what's going on.
[26:09] Yeah, you don't know what's going on.
[26:10] Yeah, it's your money, realistically.
[26:12] Yeah.
[26:12] Like, yeah.
[26:14] Yeah.
[26:14] Yeah.
[26:15] Yeah.
[26:16] We pride ourselves on that, making sure that you guys understand all the inner workings of the numbers and all of that, because we'll educate you and we'll give you the numbers and then it's completely up to you.
[26:25] Yeah.
[26:26] We don't want to pressure anyone into doing anything unless they understand it.
[26:29] By all means.
[26:30] Yeah.
[26:30] And that's how we've felt the whole, well, it's only been a short amount of time.
[26:33] Yep.
[26:34] I've never felt pressured into anything.
[26:36] I've never.
[26:37] Well, it's.
[26:39] Yeah, you sort of look around and obviously there's people in banking, you sort of never really think that they're in it for you.
[26:45] Yeah.
[26:47] And the way that it's explained and everything like that is that the structure's in place to set your – from your financial position and your salary so that –
[26:58] my biggest fear was to never overextend and get yourself in trouble.
[27:03] And the way that obviously the plan and the structure is in place, it's so you cannot get yourself in trouble if you stick to the plan.
[27:13] Correct.
[27:13] Yeah.
[27:14] Because G says it on the masterclass, you're the only ones who can fuck it up after we've given you all the information.
[27:19] Yeah.
[27:19] Yeah.
[27:19] And I think we work better to a goal as well.
[27:21] Yeah.
[27:22] Yes.
[27:24] If we've got, obviously, we've got our budget, our weekly FFF.
[27:27] Yeah.
[27:27] And all that sort of stuff.
[27:28] So we're still following it even though we're bad debt free.
[27:31] Oh, yeah.
[27:31] Yeah.
[27:31] Yeah.
[27:32] Yeah.
[27:33] I actually don't look at our accounts.
[27:35] I only look at the FFF and so the money goes in, Daniel's got it set for Wednesdays.
[27:41] So I know that on Wednesdays, you know, it's going to be that much.
[27:45] I only look at that account because that just tells me.
[27:48] I can actually spend money that's in it.
[27:50] Yeah.
[27:50] So I will look, you know, and so lots, we've changed lots of things.
[27:55] which work really, really well.
[27:58] So now every Saturday I'll do a Coles Online order and I just go bought before and I buy the exact same things and I know exactly what we will eat, what we won't eat and like I'm spending so much.
[28:14] I always thought that I didn't spend much money.
[28:15] Yeah, absolutely.
[28:16] But now that we've done this, I didn't realise how much money I was spending.
[28:22] But I don't ever just go out and go clothes shopping or go out and just buy stuff for the sake of it.
[28:29] I always thought I was a good saver.
[28:31] I didn't spend much money.
[28:32] But now I realise I probably wasn't as good as I thought I was.
[28:36] Yeah.
[28:38] Yeah.
[28:38] Yeah.
[28:38] Now that we're sort of holding ourselves accountable, we always have that second thought before we grab that credit or grab the card or go and buy something.
[28:48] Is it because you're also worried what your relationship manager might say?
[28:51] Sylvia's brilliant.
[28:52] Sylvia's brilliant.
[28:53] Yeah.
[28:53] Yeah.
[28:54] No, no, I think it's more that we just, this is our plan.
[28:59] Habits have changed.
[29:00] This is our plan.
[29:00] Habits have changed, yeah.
[29:02] Like even going out for coffee and stuff like that.
[29:03] We don't.
[29:04] We're just getting coffee beans at home now.
[29:07] We still have coffee.
[29:07] We've got lots of.
[29:08] We've always had a coffee machine, but we would have a coffee at home in the morning and then we would go for a walk and we'd buy a coffee.
[29:16] And now it's like, well, we don't need to.
[29:17] We'll just go home and have another coffee.
[29:19] Yeah.
[29:20] We'll take one with us when we go on for a walk.
[29:23] Yeah.
[29:23] It's just a non-spoken mutual agreement that it's just that's what we do.
[29:30] Yeah.
[29:30] That's how.
[29:31] So we can focus on bigger things as well, like the holidays and the investments and whatnot.
[29:36] Correct, yeah.
[29:36] And what do you think this is doing for your kids?
[29:40] They are very understanding about money.
[29:43] Yep.
[29:45] they don't ask.
[29:46] They might ask for something, but we're like, no, mate, don't have any money for that this week.
[29:49] He's like, okay.
[29:51] And that's it.
[29:52] Yeah, there's no...
[29:56] Yeah, if they ask to do – they don't really ask for much.
[29:59] No, but they don't miss out.
[30:00] They don't know.
[30:00] They don't miss out.
[30:01] If you're not feeling like you're missing out at all.
[30:03] No, no, we've never.
[30:04] Except buying those little knickknacks from the supermarket that Finn's always wants.
[30:09] He wanted that little rat.
[30:10] Oh, the rat.
[30:11] Oh, my gosh.
[30:12] He wanted this rat, this disgusting rat from the supermarket.
[30:15] I said, no, mate, not buying it, not buying it.
[30:18] They're with Daniel's mum.
[30:21] And then we get a message from Zoe saying that Finn got the rat.
[30:25] Oh, my gosh.
[30:26] Not onboarding the rat.
[30:27] Yeah.
[30:28] So he knows how to work around it.
[30:29] If we won't give it to him, he asks me.
[30:30] Yeah, kids are smarter than we give them credit for.
[30:33] Yeah, for sure.
[30:34] He got the rat.
[30:36] And how do you think this is helping set their future up and their mindset around money and finances?
[30:41] Look.
[30:43] I think just if we know what we're doing, we can show them exactly what to do.
[30:49] And I did see, I've still yet to find it on the school app, but I remember it might have been through a podcast or something, someone set like a token system.
[30:59] So if they do jobs or so on and so forth, they can cash them in.
[31:05] So I think...
[31:07] This sort of stuff as well is if we can find the way we should be using our money and we can translate it onto them.
[31:14] Yeah.
[31:15] So it gives them a bit of a head start.
[31:17] Yeah.
[31:17] Yeah.
[31:17] Yeah.
[31:19] And what about working with infinity has shocked you?
[31:21] What is something that you've been able to experience or receive that you never thought watching the masterclass you'd get?
[31:26] Yeah.
[31:28] Well, our investment properties definitely, when they were shown to us, presented to us, the plan, that shocked us.
[31:36] That shocked us, yeah.
[31:37] It shocked us that that is something that we could achieve.
[31:41] Yeah.
[31:42] So you didn't think it was possible?
[31:43] No, no, no.
[31:44] I would never, ever, ever have thought that.
[31:46] No.
[31:47] Yeah.
[31:48] So initially because we were so close to paying off our home loan, we met with our wealth strategists and they come up with their strategy.
[31:59] Yeah.
[32:00] And the first one was a $940,000 home up here in Brisbane.
[32:02] Yep.
[32:07] And we're like, oh, that's much more than we spent on our home loan.
[32:11] Okay.
[32:11] Yep.
[32:12] And then the bomb dropped off after that was a $1.5 million property in Melbourne.
[32:18] Yeah.
[32:18] And we looked at each other and I think we just.
[32:21] What?
[32:22] What is going on?
[32:23] We're buying more in our investments than our own home.
[32:26] Yeah.
[32:26] Yeah.
[32:27] Well and truly.
[32:27] Yes.
[32:28] Well and truly.
[32:28] So we never really thought that that was a possibility.
[32:32] I think that was the biggest shock.
[32:34] But once the numbers were laid out to us and the process of holding one until it's built off the plan and then the other one through the construction and so on and so forth.
[32:47] It actually was well and truly achievable.
[32:48] Yeah.
[32:50] Even off our conservative numbers with our wages and whatnot.
[32:54] Yeah, well and truly.
[32:56] And, yeah, I think that was just the biggest shock, isn't it?
[32:58] Yeah.
[32:59] Yeah.
[33:00] Has there been anything else?
[33:02] It's like do you play much in the Infinity Fam Facebook page?
[33:05] No.
[33:06] I haven't.
[33:07] We're not really social media.
[33:09] Like we don't really.
[33:10] You own it enough just to find us and then.
[33:11] Correct.
[33:12] No, no, we're on it.
[33:14] Yeah.
[33:15] But yeah, there's a lot going on in those.
[33:17] Yeah.
[33:18] I sort of skim over them a little bit.
[33:19] I'm always curious of people's opinions on it.
[33:21] That's all.
[33:21] Yeah.
[33:21] I religiously listen to all the podcasts, especially driving an hour or so from work most days.
[33:26] Yeah.
[33:28] But yeah, we're not really that involved in the social media side.
[33:32] Yeah.
[33:32] But we definitely should get more involved.
[33:34] Yeah, because like you said, there's a lot going on, but there's a lot of support and I think that's why I love it so much because everybody just wants everyone to win.
[33:42] Everybody's helping with tips and tricks on how to save money and stuff like that.
[33:45] And I just think it's really unique that Infinity does something like that.
[33:49] So I was just curious how you might have been using it.
[33:51] But yeah, I think I'll encourage you to get on it a little bit more.
[33:54] I do.
[33:54] Have you been to any of our Christmas parties?
[33:56] Yeah.
[33:57] No, no, because we only just joined in August.
[34:00] Yeah.
[34:00] We didn't really get around to it.
[34:02] We thought, oh, we'd only just join this mob.
[34:05] We're like, did they actually want us here?
[34:07] Oh, yeah, absolutely.
[34:09] Yeah, so we actually spoke about it because we've been up here from yesterday.
[34:14] Yeah.
[34:15] Yeah, that would be definitely something we'd be looking at coming up.
[34:19] Christmas party, I think Sylvia, she mentioned coming up for a REM.
[34:23] Yeah.
[34:23] Maybe later on in the year.
[34:24] So we haven't gone to a real estate mastery yet?
[34:26] None of that.
[34:26] Not yet.
[34:27] Okay.
[34:27] That's why, yeah, this is all just so foreign.
[34:30] Yeah.
[34:31] Well, you've done a podcast before you've gone to a real estate mastery.
[34:33] Yep.
[34:34] Wow.
[34:34] Yep.
[34:35] What do you think of those just from what you do see online if you do catch a reel or two?
[34:39] It's full on.
[34:40] Yeah.
[34:41] It's full on.
[34:42] Yeah.
[34:42] Yeah.
[34:43] Just even with the economists and all that sort of stuff, just knowing what's going on.
[34:47] Because we're all those education speakers.
[34:48] Yeah.
[34:49] Yeah.
[34:51] Yeah.
[34:53] Still unsure, but it's amazing.
[34:55] Yeah.
[34:56] Yeah.
[34:57] And what is the next 10, 20, 30 years of clock for you guys?
[35:01] I don't think we necessarily have a plan.
[35:03] We want to do, so we're going to Japan this year with the kids.
[35:08] We want to do a big yearly trip.
[35:12] It doesn't have to be huge, but a big yearly trip every year while the kids actually want to be with us.
[35:17] Yeah.
[35:17] Before they decide they don't like us anymore.
[35:19] Until their friends are more important.
[35:20] Yeah.
[35:21] Yep.
[35:22] That's what we want to do.
[35:23] That's the biggest goal.
[35:25] That's our biggest goal.
[35:26] Family-wise, investment-wise, we're still surprised.
[35:31] We're still surprised.
[35:32] Surprised we're even doing what we're doing.
[35:34] Yeah.
[35:34] I know you guys are so fresh that I think you're still letting the dust settle.
[35:37] A hundred percent.
[35:38] A hundred percent.
[35:40] Yeah, we don't know where the ceiling is.
[35:41] We don't know what is capable or what we're capable of.
[35:47] But, yeah, we're all in.
[35:49] Yeah.
[35:50] We're all in.
[35:51] Yeah.
[35:51] And has it changed your relationship at all since working with Infinity?
[35:55] Have you noticed any shifts with that?
[35:58] Our relationship?
[35:59] Yeah.
[36:00] Yeah, I don't think so.
[36:01] We've always – Winnie and I have been together for 20 years now.
[36:03] Yeah.
[36:04] So you can get less for murder, don't you?
[36:06] Yeah, it's just so safe.
[36:09] No, we've always been on the same page with all that sort of stuff.
[36:11] Neither of us have ever –
[36:14] We've both been the same with money.
[36:16] Like we don't spend it.
[36:17] So it's just a new way of not just budgeting.
[36:23] It's a goal that we have now that we're both on the same page with.
[36:27] Yeah.
[36:27] Whereas we'd always have the same mentality.
[36:33] Yeah.
[36:33] But without something written down.
[36:35] Yeah.
[36:35] We sort of just flowed, I guess.
[36:38] Yeah.
[36:38] Whereas now that we've got this FFF, we've got our plan, we know what we're doing.
[36:43] Yeah.
[36:44] We've got aligned things to talk about now.
[36:46] Yeah.
[36:47] Yeah.
[36:47] And like money wise talk, like we always talk about money, but I guess it hasn't really changed from where we are.
[36:55] We've just actually got something to talk about now.
[36:57] Yeah.
[36:57] Because there's a plan.
[36:59] Yeah.
[36:59] Yeah.
[37:00] Now you can be somebody else's Benny, right?
[37:03] But you're obviously Daniel.
[37:04] What would you say to somebody who's sitting on the fence?
[37:07] You know, you went to your friend and you got that advice.
[37:09] What would you say to somebody?
[37:11] Um...
[37:12] I'd say look into it for sure.
[37:14] Um, have a look at your, I wouldn't say change everything that you're doing right now.
[37:20] Um, because obviously what you're doing now works for you.
[37:24] Um, have a look at, have a look at the podcast, check out the both sides podcast, obviously, um, the infinity podcasts and well as well, just to have a look at it to, to make sure that you know what you're looking at.
[37:38] Um, um,
[37:41] do your free webinar and just understand what's happening.
[37:46] But you're mad if you don't.
[37:48] Yeah.
[37:51] We thought we were on a good trajectory with what we were doing, but now we've just tightened it up.
[37:57] Yeah.
[37:58] Yeah.
[37:59] It's a no-brainer.
[38:01] Once you're sort of in there and those plans are set,
[38:05] like you're just ripping years off your home loan.
[38:09] Yeah.
[38:09] Like it's going out of style.
[38:10] Yeah.
[38:12] You'll be, yeah, you'll be in a much better position much quicker.
[38:17] And you don't really need the shit.
[38:18] You don't need to have the cars.
[38:19] You don't need this.
[38:20] You don't need that.
[38:21] If you've got...
[38:23] I can't say much.
[38:23] I've got my old car.
[38:26] Yeah, I've got my old car at home.
[38:29] But just sell the rubbish that you don't need.
[38:31] You don't need the jet skis.
[38:32] You don't need the boats.
[38:33] You don't need to take...
[38:36] to go to the movies or go out for dinner three times a week and throw that money away.
[38:40] You can actually invest it in yourself, in your home and get out of debt quick.
[38:46] Yeah.
[38:47] But yeah, jump on, like first and foremost, jump on one of those free webinars, get an idea of what it's about because it will 100% change your life.
[38:55] But thank you guys so much for coming on to share your story.
[38:57] I know you're still very new, but I think we'll do a catch up again on another podcast just to see how far you've come from already coming so far just in six months.
[39:05] Sounds brilliant.
[39:06] Awesome.
[39:06] Thanks guys.
[39:07] Appreciate it.
[39:08] Thank you.
[39:08] Cheers.
[39:09] You're fucking gone.
[39:10] See ya.
