[0:00] Having someone when you can actually talk about these things with, and they actually get in a tap on the shoulder and it's made our relationship, um, stronger because it's not just that conversation where you can validate between your relationship.
[0:13] You actually have an expert like yourself and a team behind you who you're speaking on behalf of that you are getting that data and information.
[0:21] So I'd say it's very calming, uh, to have that structure and it gives you certainty.
[0:27] Yeah.
[0:28] money isn't rude of all evil the fucking lack of it is not money the lack of understanding money when i put that into emphasis when i realize that psychological effect and how it hit our family i have to be in the fucking way you're fucking gone see ya
[0:50] Hi, my name's Kat.
[0:51] I have been Nick and Laura's relationship manager for the past 18 to 20 months.
[0:55] So to kick everything off, can you tell us a little bit about yourselves and your family?
[1:00] Yeah, sure thing.
[1:01] Nick and Laura are from Canberra.
[1:02] We're just outside Canberra in Bungendore.
[1:05] Mid-30s.
[1:06] We're both from a service background.
[1:09] Laura runs her own business.
[1:11] We've got a six-month-old downstairs, Claudia, who you've met and had some cuddles with.
[1:15] And then we've also got my daughter, Audrey, who lives in Brisbane, spends a bit of time between her mum and us.
[1:23] And we just paid off our home loan.
[1:26] you so can you describe to us what was life like before mpindi i would say no strategy like we were good savers and we you know we had our own home and so forth but we just didn't have that consolidated strategy and we love having a goal but we didn't have the team and the focus that really defined um that approach so i think there was a big difference in the world and
[1:54] like quite a bit of uncertainty, I would say.
[1:56] Yeah, we knew if we were doing something that it was good, but we just had lots of little good things and they didn't really stack up or measure or get us ahead.
[2:06] So it was stressful because we thought we were doing the right thing and we're checking our plan all the time.
[2:11] And as everyone knows, everything's getting expensive now too.
[2:15] Like paycheck to paycheck was going, but we weren't tough.
[2:19] It didn't feel like we were getting as far ahead as we wanted to.
[2:22] And it was more guesses.
[2:24] Like you didn't have the data or the information or the team behind you to make a really educated decision about that direction.
[2:31] Or you find an excuse to buy something.
[2:33] Yeah.
[2:33] You work hard or whatever and you can buy whatever.
[2:36] You deserve it, right?
[2:37] Yes, exactly.
[2:37] We'll talk about that.
[2:40] So who brought you to Infinity first?
[2:42] I found it in, I think it was like mid-December 23.
[2:46] It was one of the Both Sides podcast.
[2:48] I think it was maybe the second one.
[2:49] Yeah.
[2:49] I was out on a run and I don't know where it came up somewhere and I started listening to it because we had just finished doing a lot of renos on our home and got married on the property.
[2:59] So that was like the hump and then we're into like the now, what next, how are we going to sort this out?
[3:03] So we found the Both Sides podcast.
[3:05] So those guys were great listening to that.
[3:08] And as soon as I finished that one, I told Laura to start listening to that one while we had to listen to the rest of them and it was all go from there.
[3:15] Because there were some things, really good bits of information in the year that resonated with us from the examples in the stories that were like, right, that's us.
[3:24] I understand those numbers.
[3:26] This is a thing we need to follow up.
[3:27] It wasn't even a second thought.
[3:28] We went zero to 100 straight away.
[3:31] And do you remember how you felt before joining Infinity?
[3:33] Yeah.
[3:34] nervous and I think especially Nick.
[3:38] I was stressed.
[3:38] Nick hasn't slept for years.
[3:40] Like he, yeah, definitely had nervousness surrounding finances.
[3:45] Yeah, we just rebuilt our life at 30 or just before 30.
[3:49] So we were conscious of how hard we had to work to try to get ahead because we were just getting back into the property market as well.
[3:57] So we were redlining on as hard as we possibly could on our own because we didn't have a team.
[4:03] It was just us.
[4:04] Yeah.
[4:04] So to describe to everyone that is watching, what did you start off with?
[4:09] Where was your loan?
[4:09] What did you have?
[4:10] What kind of, did you have any credit card bills?
[4:12] Did you have any car loans?
[4:14] Things like that.
[4:15] You're the numbers guy.
[4:16] Yeah, yeah.
[4:17] I remember it all.
[4:19] So we had two investment properties.
[4:22] One of them was the house that we previously lived in.
[4:24] So we lived in there and get back into the market, fix it up, move into Australia.
[4:29] the home that we're in now, because it was more of a family home now.
[4:33] So the loan, by the time we joined Infinity, the loan was about 850 something.
[4:39] We had like multiple little loans everywhere.
[4:42] I had one to pay off for legal fees from a divorce custody thing.
[4:47] And then we had like solar panel loan and a car loan and a credit card.
[4:51] One really bad investment loan.
[4:52] Yeah, investment loan.
[4:54] And lots of little things from all the little ways we thought we were going to be able to get better.
[5:00] And we didn't have a home budget for our weekly stuff.
[5:05] And we weren't overspending in anything, but it definitely wasn't tight.
[5:07] It wasn't tight.
[5:08] It wasn't focused.
[5:09] It wasn't controlled.
[5:10] Yeah.
[5:11] So what's it like having someone helping you keep accountable?
[5:16] Well, it's fantastic.
[5:19] Especially we were saying to G before, you know, it's so refreshing being able to have transparent conversations with yourself.
[5:26] And having someone when you can actually talk about these things with and they actually get in a tap on the shoulder and it's made our relationship stronger because it's not just that conversation where you can validate between your relationship.
[5:40] You actually have an expert like yourself and a team behind you who you're speaking on behalf of that you are getting that data and information.
[5:48] So I'd say it's very calming.
[5:50] Yeah.
[5:51] uh to have that structure and it gives you certainty very reassuring yeah it's like it's like when you're in a group pts you work harder than you do by yourself because you have to because everyone's there someone's watching you yeah it's not it's not pressure accountability but you got to do it because you have to be accountable and that's that's the best part about yeah so tell us a little bit about your fff what did you start with at the beginning and where are you now
[6:14] I think right when we started, we guessed like 700 because some dude said 750 and we thought it would be tighter than that, but we didn't know what it was.
[6:22] And then I think we walked it very quickly down to 500 or 550, something like that.
[6:28] Excuse me.
[6:28] And now it's 400 a week and we're pretty good on that all the time.
[6:34] It helps that Laura's at home with the baby so it's less driving and stuff too.
[6:39] So explain to us what exactly are you guys doing to manage your FFFs?
[6:44] We're just having actually more transparent, open conversations with each other.
[6:48] So before purchasing something or thinking about purchasing something, we talk about it.
[6:55] And even with like groceries, you know, we plan about what we're actually going to do with our meals.
[7:00] And instead of just going to the grocery store, like we love Audi, we always shop at Audi.
[7:06] And just having a plan.
[7:08] And so it's really, you know, validating with each other.
[7:12] Do we need that?
[7:13] Is that just something where, you know, you don't actually need it?
[7:16] And then we know that having a budget has purpose and meaning behind it, which has been able to get us to what we're doing.
[7:23] Yeah.
[7:24] Yeah, actively thinking about it.
[7:26] You've got to sort your life out.
[7:27] How many people throw away food that they didn't cook or use in the fridge?
[7:30] We really cut down.
[7:32] We worked out what we like.
[7:33] We worked out what we actually use and value.
[7:36] And then just – so we weren't cold turkey on everything.
[7:39] So we dropped all the way back and then we re-put in only the things that we liked.
[7:44] So we didn't have to try to convince ourselves to shave bits off and off.
[7:48] And like we've got chickens at home so we have eggs every morning.
[7:50] So that's like eating gold.
[7:52] Yeah.
[7:52] Yeah, something that's actually helped us massively is we have nine chickens and so we eat so many eggs and that's actually saved us heaps of money.
[8:01] But also Nick's scared of you where he thinks, oh, Kat's going to see something.
[8:05] She's watching.
[8:06] You can't spend that.
[8:08] We'll get kicked out of fire.
[8:10] But we found as well that like we drink a little bit, not too much, but we identified like we've got a really nice place and safe home.
[8:17] So if we buy a bottle and have some wine at home, that's like –
[8:22] 5% of the cost of bulk beers out on the town, which you don't really enjoy when you're around too, like it's too busy.
[8:29] We valued it more having one or two drinks at home sometimes.
[8:32] Yeah.
[8:32] And that's when you look at the money that that's expending or saving, that's game changer.
[8:37] You never go back.
[8:39] So what's your best budgeting task?
[8:41] Don't shop when you're hungry.
[8:43] Yeah, that's very true.
[8:45] Yeah, that's actually so true.
[8:46] Don't shop when you're hungry.
[8:47] And we live out of town, so like- The temptation has been taken away from you.
[8:51] You can eat the snacks before you get home and put it in the bin, but you've got to control yourself.
[8:54] Or not, I find them in your car all the time.
[8:56] Or not, you've got to control it.
[8:58] And so would you say that your habits and your mindsets have changed since joining Infinity?
[9:03] Yes, in a healthy way.
[9:04] It's become a really healthy conversation surrounding finances and money and budget.
[9:10] And to be honest, it's made our relationship even stronger being able to have those conversations.
[9:16] And have you told any family, friends what you're doing?
[9:18] No one yet.
[9:19] So I think they'll find out on the big podcast with G. Yeah, we've got Laura's mum, Rose, is here looking after Claudia downstairs and she just thinks, oh, it's just a finance chat for business stuff, whatever, whatever, whatever.
[9:31] No one knows yet.
[9:32] Yeah, no one knows yet.
[9:33] Yeah, no, we're very excited.
[9:35] We filmed something sneaky with G, so it's our hard launch.
[9:42] And then finally, what's one piece of advice that you would like to give to someone who's thinking about joining Infinity?
[9:49] Just do it.
[9:49] The focus and the structure and the team that you have behind you is going to enable you and you'll feel safe and certain about your decisions.
[9:59] Yeah, it took us three months from finding out about it before we actually signed up.
[10:05] For no reason, just that's when the next one was.
[10:07] And we had already implemented everything for free before we even got there in that time.
[10:13] So three months, you'll change the way you think about everything.
[10:16] Two years, you'll change your life.
[10:17] And just don't wait.
[10:18] So implement the free advice that's out there and put that, you know, do all those things.
[10:24] And then I think that's the first step, implement all that free knowledge that's there.
[10:28] Awesome.
[10:30] Thank you so much, guys.
[10:31] Thanks a lot.
[10:31] It's been an honor and a privilege to be here with you guys.
[10:34] Thank you.
[10:35] Thanks, Kat.
[10:36] You're fucking gone.
[10:37] See ya.
