In this episode of The Money Mentor Podcast, we sit down with Lisa and Shane, a couple who once thought juggling 15 different bank accounts and a credit card was “budgeting.” They open up about the stress of trying to follow the Barefoot Investor, the trap of credit card debt, and the lack of accountability that kept them stuck. After joining Infinity, they completely turned things around — cutting out bad debt, simplifying their finances, and wiping $60,000 off their mortgage in just a few months. Along the way, they discovered the power of community, accountability, and leading by example for their kids. We cover: • Why multiple accounts and spreadsheets weren’t real budgeting • How they finally ditched their credit card for good • The mindset shift of selling toys and living with less debt • How Infinity’s accountability and community helped them stay on track • The new financial habits they’re passing on to their children If you’ve ever felt like you’re “doing okay” but not really moving forward, Lisa and Shane’s story proves that the right plan, support, and mindset can change everything.

## Transcript

[0:00] The stupid thing was the credit card only had a limit of six grand, right?
[0:05] Yeah.
[0:06] So we didn't use it for our month-to-month or day-to-day expenses and then pay it off.
[0:09] We just used it for random stuff.
[0:11] So it could have been a pair of shoes.
[0:13] It could have been whatever.
[0:15] And then we'd only pay the minimum payment back.
[0:18] And I was just, you know, you really wonder how much we actually would have paid for that pair of shoes.
[0:23] Money isn't rude of all evil.
[0:24] The fucking lack of it is.
[0:25] Not money.
[0:27] The lack of understanding money.
[0:28] When I put that into emphasis, when I realized our psychological effect and how it hit our family, I have to be all the fucking way.
[0:35] You are now watching the money made to a podcast.
[0:38] With Graham Himes.
[0:38] Graham Himes.
[0:39] Graham Himes.
[0:40] Graham Himes.
[0:43] You're fucking gone.
[0:44] See ya.
[0:45] You guys know me, but I am a relationship manager here at Infinity.
[0:49] I have with me Lisa and Shane, who are my clients.
[0:54] And we're going to kind of jump into some questions and go forward.
[0:58] So before Infinity, how were you guys budgeting?
[1:03] What kind of happened?
[1:05] What were you doing?
[1:07] So we were following, it's almost a swear word around here, barefoot investor.
[1:13] And we'd have multiple.
[1:14] 15 accounts we had at one stage.
[1:17] Yeah.
[1:17] Accounts.
[1:18] Probably.
[1:20] Probably.
[1:20] And that was everything.
[1:23] So everything, as soon as pay came in, it was just divvied up into multiple accounts.
[1:27] And thought we were going okay.
[1:29] Had the spreadsheet.
[1:30] Had the spreadsheet.
[1:30] The spreadsheet that wasn't a budget.
[1:32] Yeah.
[1:33] It just told you what you were spending.
[1:34] That's right.
[1:34] Pretty much.
[1:35] Yeah.
[1:35] Pretty much.
[1:36] There was no accountability if we didn't stick to the budget.
[1:39] Well, that's it.
[1:40] But there was a bit of budget.
[1:41] There was paperwork.
[1:42] There was probably accountability for the first week or two of ourselves doing it.
[1:45] Then it just went by the wayside.
[1:47] Yeah.
[1:48] What were the account names?
[1:50] Did you have specific accounts for specific things?
[1:52] Splurge was the...
[1:54] Everyday spending.
[1:56] Splurge, Fire.
[1:57] We had Holiday, we had Rates, Rego, Strata.
[2:05] Yeah, there's a whole lot of stuff.
[2:07] Credit cards and Afterpay.
[2:08] Yes.
[2:10] Yeah, not a lot of Afterpay.
[2:12] Oh, was it?
[2:13] We did use Afterpay, but not to the volume like a credit card.
[2:18] Yeah, but you had a credit card.
[2:19] I had a credit card that got well used.
[2:21] Yeah.
[2:22] And were we part of the whole, okay, we're going to use the credit card.
[2:25] We paid off every month.
[2:26] No, we didn't pay it off every month.
[2:28] I spent more than we paid a month.
[2:31] There wasn't many months, it was always in the red.
[2:34] And every tax return, you just whack it on your credit card and start again.
[2:38] The stupid thing was the credit card only had a limit of six grand, right?
[2:43] Yeah.
[2:44] So we didn't use it for our month-to-month or day-to-day expenses and then pay it off.
[2:48] We just used it for random stuff.
[2:49] So it could have been a pair of shoes.
[2:52] It could have been whatever.
[2:54] And then we'd only pay the minimum payment back.
[2:57] And I was just, you know, you really wonder how much we actually would have paid for that pair of shoes.
[3:02] Oh, definitely.
[3:03] A hundred bucks would have been.
[3:04] And the interest would have accumulated and things just went crazy.
[3:07] It was just 30 years.
[3:08] Yeah.
[3:08] It wasn't.
[3:10] There was no accountability.
[3:11] It's ridiculous.
[3:11] Leash would go off me for buying something, but...
[3:14] that only lasts a few minutes and move on.
[3:16] Unless it was really dear, then it might last a bit longer.
[3:18] No, no, that's fair.
[3:20] And obviously very different here now.
[3:22] So we've got our FFF.
[3:25] We started at 7.50 originally from your masterclass.
[3:30] Yes, we did.
[3:31] And then we popped that straight down.
[3:34] We're at 4.80 now.
[3:35] Yeah.
[3:36] How does that make you feel?
[3:38] Just that the fact that you guys don't,
[3:40] need to worry because you know you have everything set up for your FFF now.
[3:45] You have your buffer.
[3:46] You have all of that.
[3:47] We don't have the credit card.
[3:49] No, like that buffer, we don't go into the buffer, and we've never exceeded our FFF.
[3:55] And I'll be honest, we could probably, I shouldn't say, but other than the other week when Lise had a few blowouts, we're normally $50 over, so we could probably, we've never really hit our FFFs.
[4:09] Yeah, so with the over amount, I've started putting away for Christmas or buying vouchers or birthdays.
[4:16] Like both the girls got birthdays in the coming months.
[4:19] And so those things, rather than running around the day before, just buying, you know, there's a bit of thought and a bit of planning in it now.
[4:26] We're preparing.
[4:27] Yeah, yeah.
[4:27] We're getting ready.
[4:28] And that's what we want.
[4:30] That's what specifically I wanted you guys to do.
[4:32] We read your text.
[4:34] Yeah, you read my text message.
[4:37] All those little hints and tips.
[4:38] Yeah, that's right.
[4:38] Yeah.
[4:39] And now, obviously, like you had your meeting with G just then.
[4:44] Yep.
[4:44] We're going to REM again.
[4:46] Yes.
[4:46] Yes.
[4:47] Second time.
[4:48] So next month.
[4:51] How do we feel knowing that like not even just me or your other team and everything have looked at it, but G's looked at your kind of strategy?
[5:02] Yeah.
[5:02] I was a bit blown away by that actually.
[5:04] So you do hear him mention that on podcasts.
[5:08] He's had a look and you're like, surely he can't be looking at everyone's stuff.
[5:13] But then for him just to rattle that off and just while he was sitting there talking to us, he's like, I'm formulating another plan.
[5:18] I'm like,
[5:20] This is mind-blowing that he's actually doing that as he's sitting there and I know exactly what you need to purchase and this is what's going to happen.
[5:26] And he's actually like, can you stay and can you come tomorrow?
[5:29] And I'm like, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
[5:30] I didn't pack enough clothes.
[5:32] So September it is.
[5:34] We're excited.
[5:34] Yeah, we're looking forward to going to the next spot.
[5:36] Like, REM's a...
[5:38] And I, they're a great event.
[5:40] Yeah.
[5:40] I highly recommend anyone who's looking to go to a REM to get on board.
[5:44] And your first REM, how did you guys feel?
[5:46] So obviously there's a lot of people that are going to their first REMs at the moment.
[5:50] Yeah.
[5:50] How do you guys, how did you feel when you arrived?
[5:53] Like there's a lot of, it's chaotic.
[5:55] Yeah.
[5:55] There's a lot going on.
[5:56] The good thing about it though, you'll see, I was surprised like how many people were there.
[6:02] And every time I get onto one of the online meetings, you're always surprised by the numbers.
[6:07] Yeah.
[6:08] But everyone there, I haven't met, everyone's friendly, the staff are friendly, and everyone's walking around with either the Infinity T-shirt or a lanyard.
[6:16] And you just talk to them, ask what the journey's like, and everyone wants to chat.
[6:20] That's fantastic.
[6:22] Literally everyone.
[6:23] Yeah, and I think it's just a matter of listening, taking it in.
[6:28] I mean, the dancing and the after parties and the rest, they're the icing on the cake.
[6:35] They're the bonus.
[6:36] But the education...
[6:38] uh whilst you're in the room that's the important thing to to me um and as shane said you're talking to people like-minded like yeah even last night down here on the gold coast shane spotted someone on with an infinity jumper and we stood talking to these people for you know good half an hour just everyone's happy to share their story and you know it's um it's a good community to be part of
[7:02] And that's the word, community.
[7:03] Yeah.
[7:04] And you can quite literally come to any kind of event, whether it is REM or a community event or see someone with a shirt on or a jumper or a hat or anything, merch.
[7:14] Yeah, yeah.
[7:15] And someone will grab you.
[7:16] Yeah.
[7:17] There's been people, like, at the gym that will quite literally just come up to you when you're wearing specific things.
[7:22] You see, like...
[7:24] Since we've been on board, I've seen people I've played cricket with back home.
[7:27] They've joined recently.
[7:29] People I've known from when I was young.
[7:31] People within the community you would never think would be there that are there.
[7:35] Lisa's stepbrother reached out to her that he's joined recently.
[7:40] Yeah, so this is just via the Facebook page, the family page.
[7:46] So, yeah, there's often people that you're just connecting with and you're, are you guys doing this too?
[7:51] Yeah, well, what's going on?
[7:53] So, yeah, it's a really nice thing.
[7:56] So it's becoming a family affair.
[7:57] Yeah.
[7:59] Kind of, yeah.
[8:00] Yeah, that's all right.
[8:01] Everyone else does it.
[8:02] Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[8:02] Jump on board.
[8:03] Yeah.
[8:04] And listen to the success stories at the Rams.
[8:05] Like, people get on stage.
[8:08] And you listen to the podcast, so it's similar to where you are, but their journey's a lot further than yours and they're a long way down the track.
[8:14] And how quickly they've paid their home off, how many investment properties they've had and what they're doing now is like, wow, why did we join earlier?
[8:22] Yeah.
[8:22] And let's jump on that.
[8:24] So you guys, you started in May with me specifically.
[8:28] We've done 60K.
[8:30] Yep.
[8:31] 60K we have off that line already.
[8:34] We've sold the toys.
[8:36] Yep.
[8:37] Not all of them.
[8:39] Wow, okay.
[8:40] No, I do bike riding though.
[8:41] I do keep my bike.
[8:42] That's one thing I use.
[8:43] Wait up.
[8:44] Are you saying you're going to sell the bike?
[8:45] No, I'm not selling it.
[8:46] Right.
[8:47] I just bought one.
[8:49] I only buy a bike for myself, Matt.
[8:50] I have to sell stuff to buy stuff.
[8:53] Yeah.
[8:54] Lace is very strict on that.
[8:55] Yeah.
[8:55] And you guys are, you guys have done that.
[8:59] How did you feel doing that initial?
[9:01] Obviously, okay, we're going to sell our goods, our things that we've had with us.
[9:05] We specifically wanted them.
[9:07] How did you, how did that make you feel?
[9:08] I know, like, nothing I'm attached to.
[9:11] Lace obviously, the kids and the dog.
[9:13] But yeah, got to get rid of it, got to get rid of it.
[9:16] It doesn't, like, I was happy to get rid of the motorbike.
[9:18] They only rode it to go to work.
[9:19] And like, it wasn't.
[9:21] Yeah, it was an easy sale, got rid of the car, because we've always had two cars, and now I've got a job where I've got a company car.
[9:26] The last two years, we've survived only one car.
[9:28] I thought, well, we don't need it now.
[9:30] Get rid of it.
[9:31] It's just a debt to get rid of.
[9:32] You know, you get rid of the loan repayment.
[9:35] You get rid of your insurance, petrol.
[9:40] It's an easy thing to do.
[9:41] Yeah, I think we're quite both lucky.
[9:42] We don't kind of have emotional attachment to things as such, do we, really?
[9:47] But saying five years ago, I probably wouldn't have sold it because you need two cars.
[9:52] You need this.
[9:52] We thought we did.
[9:53] You need that.
[9:54] Until you see a light at the end of the tunnel, you know, you did it this way because mum and dad did it this way.
[10:01] Yeah.
[10:01] And all your mates did it this way, so you just got to...
[10:04] Don't be afraid to change.
[10:05] Well, that's a big thing.
[10:07] Even how you said, oh, mum and dad did it this way.
[10:10] And that's a lot of people.
[10:11] They've come on from what their family have essentially said.
[10:15] And they're like, oh, mum and dad said, this is how I do it.
[10:18] We've always had a loan.
[10:19] It's 30 years.
[10:21] And it's changing that.
[10:23] Obviously, you guys have kids.
[10:24] How are they...
[10:27] taking all of this in that you guys are doing all of this and this is changing I love it I see a pot of gold at the end of the road Brooke our oldest daughter she just bought a house her and her partner and Nathan lived with this for 18 months they came to us because they wanted to buy a house and get into the markets so that was they've just moved out which is sad but good so we have talked to them about setting up so they're at the moment they're going to save their buffer
[10:56] as such and then they've got themselves an FFF that they're trying to work towards and then once they've got to their buffer as such they'll then think about what their next step is going to be.
[11:07] I mean she's 24 so she's got a fair bit of time ahead of her and she's quite money savvy.
[11:14] She works at the bank so.
[11:16] Yeah.
[11:17] So I think that they will follow our footsteps.
[11:21] our youngest daughter Hannah she's a little bit further yeah behind she's only young Hannah wants if there's a get rich quick scheme let's try it but she's going back to uni so I think they'll see some good habits coming in um they've both when we were doing like the barefoot stuff they were kind of doing similar sort of things so I guess where we are the ones that are leading by example which
[11:46] Yeah, we're happy to do that.
[11:47] That's our job as parents.
[11:49] So, yeah, we'll see what happens in the future for them.
[11:51] And they're just taking on the learnings that you guys are giving them as well.
[11:55] So it's kind of shifting that old, I do what mum and dad, like, were doing.
[12:00] It's now, like, oh, mum and dad are doing this and it's different.
[12:04] Yeah, yeah.
[12:04] And things...
[12:05] let's hannah wants to live in the first property that finishes and she can just live there rent free apparently she thinks that's how it works and we've got news for her that it's not um but yeah it's all it's all good no perfect if there um if there was something that you could um tell someone that was starting out that did have a family or anything like that what would you essentially say to them to be like this is this is the way forward
[12:30] Follow the process.
[12:31] Yes.
[12:34] And don't just throw your hands in the air if you're feeling like you're a little bit lost or you can't live off your FFF.
[12:41] Reach out to your RM and have a chat.
[12:43] And that's essentially what I see that your role is, is to be that troubleshooter and to give ideas or to adjust things if they're really struggling.
[12:54] But keep those lines of communication open and just trust the process because it's going to work for you.
[12:59] And, you know, don't be disheartened if you feel like you're not doing enough because, you know, if $10 is more than you're putting on, you're still doing something right.
[13:07] So that would be my advice.
[13:09] You're going to have some great months and you're going to have some okay months.
[13:15] Follow the process, reach out.
[13:17] There's a big community, like everyone's been through that process.
[13:20] Everyone's had that stumble along the line.
[13:22] So it's, you're not gonna pay your house off in the first two months, but yeah, there's a,
[13:28] There's a tried and true successful plan there.
[13:30] Follow it.
[13:32] Let the banker bank.
[13:33] That's it.
[13:33] Perfect.
[13:34] And listen to your RM.
[13:36] Yes.
[13:38] Be scared of your RM.
[13:39] No.
[13:39] I'm not scared.
[13:40] No, not at all.
[13:41] No.
[13:41] The good thing about having you there is like previously when you've tried the budget, you're not accountable because there's no one saying, hang on, what are you doing here?
[13:49] That's the thing that...
[13:51] that's one thing infinity do that no one else does it's just accountability the team you know that you guys specifically have a whole team and it might not like yes you talk to me consistently um but you also have everyone else um and i will pull them in or any rm will pull someone in when they're needed
[14:11] And you'll just be like, okay, this is what we're doing now.
[14:14] And we're going to continue from there.
[14:16] Yeah.
[14:17] I think the monthly catch-ups we have with the masterclass too, they're like masterclass, they're monthly, what are they called now?
[14:23] The accountability meeting.
[14:25] Yeah.
[14:25] Yep.
[14:26] The mans, yeah.
[14:26] Yeah, it just keeps that whole hype going too.
[14:30] Because when you first join Infant, you're on a high, then everything's sort of, you're still on that high.
[14:34] You go to your first round, it's like, wow, everything's happening now.
[14:38] Then you get, now they're fantastic.
[14:40] So it just keeps the ball rolling.
[14:42] Yeah.
[14:42] Yeah.
[14:43] And then now, you know, you're on another high.
[14:45] Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[14:46] Exactly right.
[14:47] And it just keeps going.
[14:48] Here comes chapter two.
[14:49] Yeah.
[14:50] Well, that's it.
[14:50] Chapter two, we'll have to do another podcast.
[14:52] Yeah, yeah, exactly.
[14:53] Yeah.
[14:54] Be good.
[14:55] All right.
[14:55] Thank you so much for coming in, guys, and doing this today.
[14:59] Thank you.
[14:59] Thank you for the opportunity.
[15:00] Perfect.
[15:01] You're fucking gone.
[15:02] See ya.
