In this episode of The Money Mentor: Changing Lives Financially, we sit down with Lisa and Shane from Hervey Bay, QLD, who share their inspiring journey from financial stress to financial freedom. Once juggling 15 bank accounts, credit card debt, and uncertainty about their future, they decided it was time to make a change. Within just four months of restructuring their finances, they wiped $80,000 off their mortgage, learned how to budget without sacrificing lifestyle, and started building a $4.5 million property portfolio, all while strengthening their relationship as a couple. We talk about: • The turning point that made them take action in their 50s • How they ditched bad debt and simplified their money system • The emotional hurdles of selling their old home • Setting up a self-managed super fund and investing for the future • Why being on the same page financially made them stronger as a couple If you’ve ever felt “financially unfit but normal,” Lisa and Shane’s story will show you what’s possible when you commit to change. [0:00] We've wasted a lot of money.
[0:02] Just to get, so we say we met in March, we did everything in April, May, June, July, so in four months, you smashed $80,000 of your mortgage deal.
[0:14] Yeah.
[0:15] Money isn't the root of all evil, the fucking lack of it is.
[0:17] Not money, the lack of understanding money.
[0:20] When I put that into emphasis, when I realised that psychological effect and how it hit our family, I have to be in the fucking way.
[0:26] You are now watching the Money Man Talk podcast with Graeme Homme.
[0:30] Graeme Homme.
[0:31] Graeme Homme.
[0:31] Graeme Homme.
[0:35] and gone.
[0:36] See ya.
[0:36] Welcome back to another episode of the Money Mentor on the changing lives financially session.
[0:41] And we've got some new special guests today and I'm sure they're not nervous at all.
[0:45] But very warm, warm, warm welcome to Lisa and Shane.
[0:48] How are we?
[0:49] Great.
[0:49] Fantastic.
[0:50] How are you?
[0:50] I can't complain because Beck never listens.
[0:53] Not about the complaints anyway.
[0:55] So...
[0:55] We only listen to important stuff.
[0:57] Correct.
[0:58] I feel your pain.
[0:59] They reckon men have selective hearing, but I reckon our wives have the best selective hearing.
[1:03] Very much so in my house.
[1:04] Oh shit, we're recording.
[1:05] Hang on.
[1:05] Anyway, moving right along.
[1:06] Welcome, welcome.
[1:08] So guys, give us a little bit of a background.
[1:10] I appreciate you coming to share today.
[1:12] It's only been a recent short journey with Infinity, so it's kind of lots of things happening really quick.
[1:18] Give us a bit of background on who you are, where you're from, that sort of jazz.
[1:22] A bit of background.
[1:24] Yeah, sure.
[1:24] So we're from Harvey Bay in Queensland.
[1:27] Beautiful part of the world.
[1:28] Yeah, it is a beautiful part, especially now with the whales coming in.
[1:32] I work in business development manager for a hotel on Garry, so that's great.
[1:39] Nice.
[1:40] We've been in Harvey Bay for about 15 years.
[1:43] Two daughters.
[1:44] One demanding Sharpay dog.
[1:48] Very.
[1:49] That's probably my story.
[1:50] So that's the boss of the house?
[1:52] Yeah.
[1:52] Oh, fully.
[1:53] Fully boss of the house.
[1:54] Very much so.
[1:56] I work in sales and been doing that pretty much since I got to Harvey Bay.
[2:01] Had two-year diversion in my career, but back doing sales, something I love doing.
[2:06] Okay.
[2:06] Awesome.
[2:07] Awesome.
[2:09] So family of five, really.
[2:12] Yes.
[2:13] And when we include king or queen, Sharp A, boy or girl Sharp?
[2:15] Rude.
[2:16] Rude by name and rude by nature.
[2:18] Rude by name and rude by nature, king of the house Sharp A.
[2:21] Yes.
[2:21] So household of five including Rudy.
[2:24] Yes.
[2:24] Okay.
[2:25] And tell us, I guess, get a bit of background.
[2:28] Before you came to Infinity this year, what were you doing financially?
[2:33] When did you, you know, when did you, what did you pay for your home in Harvey Bay?
[2:36] Did you have investments, other properties?
[2:38] Give us a bit of background.
[2:40] Yes, so we moved to Harvey Bay about 15 years ago, as I mentioned, and we bought a property probably 13 years ago in the bay before it went a bit crazy up there.
[2:53] So we got in at the right time, I guess, and we've still got that property, but we've actually moved into a townhouse, just the two of us and the Sharpay.
[3:01] And we...
[3:05] So kids are growing up?
[3:06] Kids are growing up.
[3:07] One's just been living with us to save for her first house deposit.
[3:11] Her and her partner lived us 18 months.
[3:13] We did the good parent thing, right?
[3:14] Nice.
[3:15] How'd that go?
[3:16] They moved out a month ago.
[3:18] They're going to see this.
[3:20] You're not celebrating at all.
[3:21] You're not celebrating at all.
[3:23] No, that's right.
[3:24] So we're really proud that they got themselves in the door as well.
[3:29] So yes, we've done that.
[3:30] And before, I think we thought we were doing okay.
[3:34] We...
[3:34] We were barefooters, so we had multiple... Wrongfooters.
[3:38] Wow.
[3:39] Yeah, well, we thought we were all doing all right.
[3:41] How many left feet did you have?
[3:43] We had 15 different accounts from Russia.
[3:45] 15?
[3:46] Fucking hell.
[3:47] And we trimmed a few down.
[3:49] And we had money going in every account, thought we were all covered.
[3:53] Was it automated or manual management?
[3:56] It was pretty, it was automated.
[3:57] Okay, so you'd like when pay would come into pay accounts, so you had all the automations to go, cars, bills, kids, like zap, zap, zap, zap.
[4:05] Add the spreadsheet.
[4:06] Yeah.
[4:07] Oh yeah, that spreadsheet.
[4:08] On top of the internet banking, we had the spreadsheet.
[4:10] Yeah.
[4:11] Okay.
[4:11] But we're paying our bills, so we thought we're going all right, right?
[4:14] What was the kicker for me?
[4:15] I went on a trip with some guys down south and...
[4:19] They're all sitting there talking about their super and they're all teachers.
[4:21] Some of them are retired.
[4:22] They're all on.
[4:23] And I was only in tears listening to them.
[4:25] I thought, shit, we need to get ourselves sorted out.
[4:27] Right.
[4:28] Yeah.
[4:28] And I think for me too.
[4:29] So that was a bit of an instigator, a bit of a turning point?
[4:33] More so, yeah, for what we're going to do down the track because we never, like, we've never had to miss out.
[4:38] I've always, if I want something, I've always, unfortunately, just got it and then.
[4:42] Yeah.
[4:42] Yeah.
[4:43] Ask for forgiveness later.
[4:44] Seek forgiveness, don't ask for permission.
[4:46] And then we just thought, shit, we need to get ourselves sorted out.
[4:50] Yeah.
[4:51] Okay.
[4:51] And I think for me, I wasn't scared about turning 50.
[4:54] But what did freak me out a bit was going, oh, we may only have 10 years.
[4:59] Like we're 60, you know.
[5:00] And then it's like...
[5:01] heck, what are we going to do?
[5:03] Like, how are we going to make sure that we live a comfortable life and we want to do, you know, we want to travel?
[5:09] And I guess historically, like generations before me, I've watched them kind of struggle as they get older.
[5:17] So, and I know you've got a story about housing commission.
[5:19] I'm a housing commission kid as well.
[5:21] Right.
[5:22] But I used to watch my nan live in a little tiny housing commission unit and be too scared to run the heater because it cost a fortune, right?
[5:30] Turn the light off when you come in and out of the room.
[5:31] And my nan, God bless the cotton socks, obviously passed now, Sally.
[5:34] But the tea bag, she's a cup of tea, love.
[5:37] The most exciting part of the day on the pension is the cup of teas, right?
[5:40] Yeah.
[5:41] But she used the same, I love it, used the same tea bag.
[5:44] So your home brand tea bag, make two cups of tea, plonk it on the sink.
[5:48] You're drinking dishwasher.
[5:49] Yeah, by the second or third cup.
[5:51] Another cup of tea, love?
[5:52] And I'm thinking, shit, let me near the tea bags.
[5:54] Because, you know, reusing the same one for the third or fourth cuppa, I'm like, it's fucking dish water.
[5:59] There was a little old man who used to live next to my nan, and he, on a cold day...
[6:03] He had a car that was unroadworthy and unregistered sitting in the car park.
[6:07] He'd sit in that because the sun was shining on the windscreen and make sure it was so warm, you know.
[6:12] So little things like that that you see.
[6:14] That whole generation is, you know, they made their own clothes.
[6:17] They took their own cut lunch.
[6:19] Oh, man, I'm hungry.
[6:22] I'll have an apple.
[6:22] I don't want an apple.
[6:23] Well, you're not fucking hungry.
[6:24] I come back half an hour later and try to, hey, Nan, I'm starving.
[6:28] Oh, well, have a sandwich.
[6:29] I don't want a sandwich.
[6:30] Well, you're not fucking hungry.
[6:32] That's the one.
[6:35] Society has changed so quick.
[6:37] Isn't it?
[6:38] I mean, we talk about that, just going for coffee.
[6:41] Yeah.
[6:41] You know, our parents would never think to go for coffee.
[6:44] My God, what a stupid idea.
[6:46] I know, if Pop took his pay packet home on the way home and stopped at the pub once a week, he copped it from Nan when he got back and the envelope was open.
[6:52] You smell like beer.
[6:53] He's had one bloody mini.
[6:54] Let him go.
[6:55] He's worked in the coal mines, you know, like...
[6:57] But that was that.
[6:58] Every dollar counted, right?
[7:00] Yeah.
[7:01] Yeah.
[7:01] So I guess we looked at that and thought, yeah, we want a better future.
[7:04] Yeah.
[7:04] We don't want to be comfortable when we retire.
[7:06] We don't want to scrimp and save.
[7:08] Yeah.
[7:08] Okay.
[7:09] And probably create some generational wealth for the kids.
[7:11] So you guys were doing that camp, but you had the old home in Harvey Bay.
[7:15] Yep.
[7:15] And then you had the new property you bought to move into and sort of downsized, but like a modern townhouse or?
[7:21] Yeah.
[7:21] It's pretty much.
[7:22] Closer to the beach.
[7:23] Closer to the beach.
[7:23] Okay.
[7:24] So gated townhouse.
[7:25] Ticks all the boxes for you, for the three of you now, right?
[7:28] Yeah.
[7:28] Kids who've grown up.
[7:29] So you've got Rudy running the nest.
[7:31] Yep.
[7:32] And then the two of you.
[7:33] So, and then what about like cars, credit cards, anything else financially?
[7:37] We had a credit card.
[7:38] We just, I reckon we had it for years and.
[7:42] Pretty much every tax return, you just paid the credit card off.
[7:44] Really?
[7:45] Don't get me wrong, we always paid it monthly but never cleared it.
[7:49] And I'd always buy something stupid, I'd just put it on the credit card.
[7:51] I literally said the other day, I'd hate to think.
[7:54] How much interest you paid.
[7:56] About 20 odd percent probably back then through that.
[7:59] Like scary stuff really.
[8:00] Dumb, dumb.
[8:02] Yeah.
[8:03] That eventually when we'd come on board we had to cut it up and get rid of it.
[8:06] Yeah, so we had a car loan when we first come on board and we had the credit card as Shane was mentioning.
[8:14] And I think that was pretty much the remainder of our, that's our bad debt.
[8:19] And I mean, having your own home,
[8:23] And how much was only on the mortgage when we started?
[8:26] So we started with a... We bought it for $520.
[8:30] Yep.
[8:30] And we had $420.
[8:31] $420.
[8:32] Yeah.
[8:33] Okay, on the home.
[8:34] Yep.
[8:34] Yep.
[8:35] And would you classify yourselves in having your home and having another property, which was the old home, I'm assuming?
[8:42] Yep.
[8:43] So having two properties, that's... You're a head start, right?
[8:45] Yeah.
[8:45] Obviously, you've done well.
[8:47] Would you classify your household as...
[8:50] financially fit, financially savvy, struggling, just the norm of everyone else, use the credit card.
[8:57] How would you, now what you know now, how would you summarise yourselves back then as a household?
[9:04] Unfit.
[9:06] Unfit but normal.
[9:08] Unfit, but not, okay.
[9:09] So financially, now what you know, back then you'd say, well, that was a bit of a shit for you.
[9:13] We knew a lot of people that were doing the Barefoot Invested too.
[9:16] So you'd go out and everyone'd see the orange credit cards.
[9:19] Yeah, yeah.
[9:20] And everyone, and you speak to people.
[9:22] It's like being part of a car club or a cult or a bikey gig.
[9:26] He's like, oh, an orange car.
[9:27] Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[9:28] You're a Barefoot Investor.
[9:29] I know where you're from.
[9:30] You've got 20 accounts like us.
[9:31] Yeah.
[9:33] Yeah, so I think we thought we were fine.
[9:36] With what we were doing.
[9:37] Yeah.
[9:37] And we probably thought we were a little step ahead because we did have the, we kept our old residence.
[9:42] Other property.
[9:42] Other property.
[9:43] But we got a debt of $420,000 on the new home.
[9:47] That's when we started.
[9:49] Okay.
[9:49] All right.
[9:50] Yeah.
[9:50] We just thought that's going to be a retirement fund.
[9:53] Like everyone thinks you have two properties, that's going to be a retirement fund.
[9:56] Yeah, you never see it.
[9:57] Oh, never see it.
[9:57] Better hang on to it.
[9:58] Okay.
[9:59] So earlier this year, you found us.
[10:01] Yeah.
[10:02] Yeah, Lisa had done that.
[10:03] And I was dragged and kicking, but I was always busy watching something else.
[10:08] And she got me to watch, finally, after a couple of weeks of busting me balls, she got me to watch that.
[10:13] You just gave in, right?
[10:14] I gave in just to shut her up.
[10:16] I had a pause in my reels.
[10:18] Cat reels.
[10:19] Cat reels.
[10:19] Or joke reels or whatever else was going on.
[10:21] I watched that.
[10:22] I was hooked pretty much.
[10:24] Soon as we watched that, I was ready.
[10:26] This is the free webinar?
[10:27] Yeah.
[10:27] Yep.
[10:28] Watch that.
[10:29] I was hooked.
[10:30] I was ready to sign up.
[10:32] Then I was going, we've got to get on that date, got to get on that date.
[10:34] Then she was a little bit hesitant.
[10:36] I said, anywhere we go.
[10:38] So you instigated it and then you were like, yeah, we're ready.
[10:41] I was all over.
[10:41] I wanted to do it that week.
[10:42] What clicked for you in the free webinar to be like, whoa, we have to do this right now?
[10:46] Just the basic.
[10:47] It was, well, every time you talk about financing, this is too hard, put it in a too hard basket.
[10:52] But watch that.
[10:52] It was just easy.
[10:54] I try to make it I try to take really complex shit and just distill it down to be really so easy you go fuck I don't need this fat little idiot I'll do it myself and after that we started doing the a poor man's FFF which was probably too much and we got told off at but it was just very easy to relate with you and the people right that
[11:14] Just easy.
[11:14] And I thought- So I clicked.
[11:15] You were just like, it's pretty simple.
[11:17] What are we doing?
[11:17] We didn't think nothing about buying.
[11:18] We weren't thinking about buying any other properties.
[11:20] We just thought, this is easy.
[11:21] Let's get on board.
[11:22] Yeah.
[11:23] And I was waiting.
[11:23] Then I was just, I was pushing Lisa in the end to, come on, we need to get on board because- So you've done all the work, Lisa.
[11:29] Yeah.
[11:30] And then you're like, no, let's go, let's go.
[11:33] After being nagged and dragged.
[11:34] Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[11:35] And then you're like, let's go.
[11:36] And then all of a sudden, what happened to you?
[11:38] Hang on a minute.
[11:39] Well, I
[11:43] do we, don't we, what makes me believe?
[11:47] Like everything I watch made sense.
[11:48] There's no hesitation in that.
[11:50] Then I'm like, we don't know this company.
[11:53] We don't know anything about them.
[11:55] What if it's a rort?
[11:56] What if it's a...
[11:58] And this is the natural Australian thing.
[12:00] Everyone goes, oh, what is it?
[12:01] Is it cult?
[12:02] Especially nowadays with so much stuff that you see.
[12:04] Current affair, run around and bust this person for scamming people and this person.
[12:09] And then it just took me a little bit more to watch some other reels and watch some other podcasts, listen.
[12:15] So you needed more social proof and more validation that this worked at scale for lots of people like you.
[12:24] And people had been on a long journey.
[12:26] Right.
[12:27] So I needed to prove that you're not fly by night.
[12:29] So you needed to hear some of my people that worked with me in 2012.
[12:33] Because I say this all the time.
[12:34] Everyone's got some shit on social media, right?
[12:36] Or some Google ad or YouTube.
[12:38] And then it's like, pay your loan off in seven years.
[12:40] And if you do an ABN search on the company name on that ad, it's three years old.
[12:45] And I don't mind someone saying, hey, I've been in the industry for 10, 20 years.
[12:49] and I've got all these testimonials at a different company.
[12:52] Yeah.
[12:52] But don't just set up and say, copy, be the Tmoo version of G. Yeah, exactly.
[12:56] How to pay?
[12:56] Yeah, yeah.
[12:57] Well, which client do you have?
[12:58] If your business is three years old, show me how you've got a customer you actually took from go to woe in seven.
[13:04] They're real scared.
[13:05] Not scared.
[13:06] Lisa was hesitant.
[13:07] Because any finance person you've got to go to, there's always going to be some type of investment.
[13:11] There's a fee.
[13:12] There's a fee.
[13:13] And I said, what we've done in the last 50 years hasn't worked.
[13:17] Yeah.
[13:17] Not 50.
[13:18] Take it easy.
[13:18] Yeah.
[13:19] easy tiger what people have what what we've done the last the last few years hasn't worked and i don't think it's going to work so we need actually we just need to change if we don't change we're going to be here in 10 years time again just for my brain between nagging you for three four weeks say to actually have a look at it like all right cat reels gone whatever this gone that all right i'll have a yeah all right we're in
[13:43] And I asked, sorry to buddy, I thought it was only going to be 20 minutes.
[13:46] I had to sit there for an hour and a half.
[13:47] So, Nat, to get... Oh, you did one of my long ones.
[13:49] And I was hooked straight.
[13:52] Okay.
[13:52] As soon as I... Yeah, let's do it.
[13:53] Because I think, usually the recording on demand is like 42, 45 minutes.
[13:58] I think I did a couple of live ones.
[14:00] Yeah, we did a live one.
[14:00] And they were like 90 minutes.
[14:01] And fuck, I was on one.
[14:03] I was yelling at people.
[14:04] I was fucking... And I didn't realise I was going to say long.
[14:07] Chaffa, chaffa.
[14:07] Quick 20 minutes, I'll be able to do it.
[14:09] And I zap them.
[14:10] And I was hooked from pretty much...
[14:12] Even halfway through it, I was ready to sign up.
[14:14] Right.
[14:14] I was ready to go.
[14:16] I should have sold you something earlier.
[14:17] Yeah, that's right.
[14:18] Could have been off and back to the pub.
[14:20] Okay, so, but how long between that flip around then, you're like, yo, hang on a minute.
[14:25] How long did it take you to get further validation to go, yeah, okay, I found this.
[14:30] Yeah, okay, now you're like, how long did it take that process to go, I need more validation?
[14:34] Yeah.
[14:35] It was probably about four weeks.
[14:37] Four weeks, okay.
[14:38] And I remember watching Rosewell's,
[14:40] Right, yeah, Craig and Kim.
[14:41] Yeah.
[14:42] And their story was similar to ours.
[14:44] So they were a similar age when they started.
[14:46] 30.
[14:47] But they're now.
[14:48] Is that what it is?
[14:49] Yeah, that's 30.
[14:50] Early 20s.
[14:50] 21, never been kids.
[14:52] And now they're 40.
[14:53] Yeah, that's right, yeah.
[14:56] And I guess that story was very similar.
[14:59] We had similar super amounts.
[15:00] We had similar stories, yeah, situations going on.
[15:03] And I'm like, well, they've been around for 10 years.
[15:06] yeah 2016 yeah right yeah nine years yeah so i'm like okay that that's working for me now i can now see people that are on this journey long term and yeah not a fly by night and the journey's actually really starting to change their life with any accountant advisor financial but for 10 years there has to be something working
[15:26] Exactly right.
[15:27] Yeah.
[15:27] And, you know, it's working for them.
[15:30] So, again, why couldn't it work for us?
[15:32] Okay.
[15:32] So then I'm like, okay, Shane, let's do this.
[15:34] Then I was getting the reels on Facebook all the time.
[15:36] I was like, geez, you need to.
[15:37] Yeah.
[15:38] The stories were getting better.
[15:39] Yeah, once you watch one of my things, I own you.
[15:41] I'm stalking you from everywhere.
[15:43] I was swapping music at the gym.
[15:45] First your wife's just swapping.
[15:47] They piss off.
[15:49] They really went to the weekend thing, and you said, you know, get all your paperwork done, you know, you gotta be ready to masterclass.
[15:55] I was quite surprised, people were gonna laugh at this.
[15:58] I only thought there'd be 20, 30 people on there.
[15:59] I said, if you get it right, we might get caught up, thinking, might be 20, 30 people, we'll get caught up.
[16:03] And I looked at the number on the thing, there's 570 or something like that one.
[16:08] Wow.
[16:08] People wanting to change their lives.
[16:10] So there's something going on.
[16:11] I never run one bigger than a thousand people, then plus staff and clients that want to read.
[16:16] I couldn't believe that.
[16:17] But typically it's about 500 people is a really good sweet spot.
[16:21] Where you'll see me sit there for 10, 12 hours for the whole of day one or half a day one.
[16:26] Yeah.
[16:26] I don't do the morning anymore.
[16:28] Rach does it for me because it's too much.
[16:29] Yeah.
[16:30] You know, I say the same thing as the webinar and this.
[16:32] And so it's like I let some of the team do that now.
[16:34] Yeah.
[16:35] But yeah, it's a big day.
[16:36] So we did that and we tried to make a video that afternoon.
[16:41] For the dance class, yeah.
[16:42] Oh, God.
[16:42] Yeah, no, people would have saw us down the beach.
[16:44] Well, not sceptics, but certainly out of our comfort zone, jump up and dance to ACDC.
[16:49] Let's do this video.
[16:50] Who are we?
[16:51] We're fully involved.
[16:52] What have I done to you?
[16:53] I was a filmmaker.
[16:54] She was doing it down the beach.
[16:56] We're a chance.
[16:58] Yeah.
[16:58] Or you had a bit of fun along the way.
[16:59] I think that's a key thing too.
[17:02] If you can make learning a bit fun, people tend to actually have a... And like, I'm not, I can't dance, I'm fat out.
[17:09] But I go to think, if you can have a bit of fun and get out of your cup, you actually enjoy it and you retain the information.
[17:14] Yeah.
[17:14] Because you relate it to having a bit of fun.
[17:15] Yeah.
[17:16] But if it's like...
[17:17] accountant like they use their personality as a form of contrast well graham you could do that for tax it's like i've forgotten everything they've said you've lost me right so i try to throw a few salt and peppers in there for a bit of fun what was a real eye-opener on the day was how much interest you're paying daily when you when you do that work and think wow i'm paying that daily yeah
[17:37] I think the other thing for us, it was the simplicity of it.
[17:40] So, you know, if I go to the hairdresser and the hairdresser says to me, what colour and what style do you need a fringe?
[17:48] Do you want this?
[17:48] And I'm like, you're the expert.
[17:50] What do you think I should have, right?
[17:52] So, and it's the same thing with you guys.
[17:54] So, I don't know what I'm doing.
[17:57] So, if I can follow something, it keeps it quite simple.
[18:01] And then you've got this whole team behind you making sure you're getting it right.
[18:05] Yeah, I think we're on a bit of a winner.
[18:07] Okay.
[18:08] Well, let's rip into the numbers for you guys.
[18:10] So you found us and came on board, is it around March this year?
[18:14] Yeah, pretty much.
[18:15] Okay.
[18:15] So what, six months into the journey maybe?
[18:18] Yeah.
[18:18] Well, from when you first sort of engaged.
[18:20] Yeah, six months.
[18:21] And then you engaged, applied, joined up, got approved, paperwork, value, all that sort of nonsense.
[18:27] So it was a couple of months in there with all that fluff.
[18:30] And then you guys did your first real estate mastery in May?
[18:33] May, yeah.
[18:34] March, April, May.
[18:35] I reckon about a couple weeks before May, everything sort of rolled over, the loans, everything.
[18:40] Yeah, into April, yeah.
[18:41] Yep, so.
[18:42] Yeah, May.
[18:43] Maybe right to go.
[18:43] The first month, couple weeks to get everything done.
[18:46] Yeah, yeah.
[18:46] Then you've got a month or so of operating it.
[18:48] And then, okay, we're in a month two or three here.
[18:50] Let's go look at how to build from there.
[18:52] Yeah.
[18:53] And we saw the REM opportunity come up.
[18:54] Then you see, so you can't come in the first six months.
[18:57] Three months.
[18:58] Three months.
[18:58] And then we spoke and we luckily got in.
[19:01] Did you speak to fucking Louis?
[19:02] No.
[19:03] No.
[19:03] No.
[19:03] No, we're not throwing anyone under the bus.
[19:06] Yeah, I just want this on the record, Louis, that it was probably fucking you.
[19:09] It's like, it's a state of people, let's get your loan sorted.
[19:13] Let's get your, let's get everything sorted.
[19:16] Operate it for the first month or two.
[19:17] And then after three months, when you know I'm not full of shit, then let's start looking at more complex stuff.
[19:23] Yeah, yeah.
[19:23] And I find that flows better.
[19:24] But I stand on stage with six, 700 people.
[19:27] who's been here for longer than 10 years?
[19:29] Craig's and Kim's.
[19:31] Who's been here at seven?
[19:32] Steve's and Sue Anne's, you know.
[19:33] Yeah.
[19:34] And then Alex and Mary.
[19:35] And then it's like, who's like less than a year, you know.
[19:38] And there's heaps of new.
[19:40] Who's less than... And then all of a sudden I get this group and I'm like, who's under three?
[19:43] And they put their hair down.
[19:44] And you go, Louis.
[19:44] Louis Walker, put your fucking hair down.
[19:48] He's good fun.
[19:48] He's a good man.
[19:50] So let's jump in the numbers.
[19:51] So joined in March, restructured everything, new financial plan, new bits and pieces, new loans, real estate mastery in May.
[20:01] So we had the home and we've got the old home.
[20:05] So we've got two properties there.
[20:06] Home loan balance, you said, was about 420?
[20:08] 420, yep.
[20:09] Okay.
[20:10] What's the home loan balance today since we started in March, April, May?
[20:14] 340.
[20:15] 3.40 from 4.20.
[20:16] Yep.
[20:17] So 80 grand lower.
[20:18] Yep.
[20:20] 80 grand lower.
[20:21] Bananas, right?
[20:22] So we say it's settled in April.
[20:24] So we'll go May, June, July, August.
[20:28] Yeah.
[20:28] Yeah.
[20:30] So previously all that.
[20:30] When you say it like that.
[20:32] We've wasted a lot of money.
[20:34] Just to get, so we say we met in March, we did everything in April, May, June, July.
[20:41] So in four months, you've smashed $80,000 of your mortgage deal.
[20:46] Haven't bought anything either.
[20:49] No, it's crazy when you say it out loud like that.
[20:53] We just live on that FFF.
[20:55] We're strict on that.
[20:57] How much is your FFF?
[20:58] FFF.
[21:00] It was 5.30 when we first started.
[21:02] Yep.
[21:02] And now we're 4.80.
[21:04] Okay.
[21:04] So for the two of you and Rudy, obviously.
[21:07] So 4.80 a week now.
[21:08] So that's the groceries, the food, the fuel, the fun.
[21:12] Do you feel restrained or comfortable?
[21:14] Comfortable.
[21:15] Comfortable.
[21:15] And in saying that, sometimes there's some leftover of a week.
[21:20] I reckon this week was the only week because Lisa had a few splurges.
[21:23] This was the only week.
[21:28] This is the only week where we're right on the edge.
[21:31] Otherwise, it's normally 30.
[21:32] It's not over, just on the edge.
[21:33] It's never been over.
[21:35] We've always been at least 30, 40 bucks under.
[21:39] Now, do you remember before we started, how much was coming off your loan, 420?
[21:44] How much was coming off it in an entire year?
[21:47] It would have been just a minimum repayment, which let's call it $2,500 a month.
[21:52] Yeah, $2,500 a month, $1,800's interest, $7,000, yeah, probably $8,500, $10,000 a year.
[21:57] Yeah.
[21:58] That was it.
[21:59] That was it.
[21:59] And then just spend everything else we own.
[22:01] Yep.
[22:02] And that's why that tunnel was getting smaller and smaller, thinking we're going to take this into retirement.
[22:07] We don't want to do that.
[22:08] So you've really achieved seven to 10, eight to 10 years of mortgage principal reduction in four months.
[22:15] Yeah.
[22:16] Does it play a mod?
[22:17] Yeah, it is.
[22:18] The real eye opener, though.
[22:19] No wonder everyone calls us a cult.
[22:22] The eye-opener was at the two-day masterclass where you bring that mortgage calculator out.
[22:26] Yeah.
[22:27] And you see that and you go, geez, I can get... That's unbelievable.
[22:30] And anyone who can do numbers, right?
[22:32] You can think, oh, this guy's full of shit.
[22:34] Anyone who can use their brain in a calculator and it's this one minus this one.
[22:39] Like it's very easy to follow.
[22:41] Yeah.
[22:41] It's an algorithm.
[22:42] It's a formula.
[22:42] It's an algorithm.
[22:43] You look at it, it does blow your mind.
[22:45] It does.
[22:45] Yeah, yeah.
[22:46] But then you kind of get the shits with yourself.
[22:47] You go through this emotional rollercoaster.
[22:49] Yeah.
[22:50] What the hell have we been doing?
[22:51] What have we been doing?
[22:52] Okay.
[22:53] Buying a lot of shit.
[22:54] So, $3.20 now from...
[22:56] Sorry, $3.40 from $4.20.
[22:58] So, $80 grand ahead in four months.
[23:00] Yeah.
[23:01] What about investments?
[23:03] So, you've got the old property still?
[23:05] Yes, got the old property.
[23:06] Hopefully, short term.
[23:08] What are we doing with the old... How much is the old property worth?
[23:12] $6.50.
[23:13] How much do you owe?
[23:15] We owe $3.20.
[23:18] 320.
[23:18] So there's about 330 in there and we owe 340 today.
[23:21] Oh, that's interesting.
[23:23] Yeah.
[23:23] So hopefully...
[23:24] Happy days ahead, right?
[23:26] Very shortly that'll be gone.
[23:27] So if we sell that doll, that would pretty much pay the mortgage out almost after we pay the aid.
[23:33] A bit short after we pay the aid.
[23:35] But given you've done 80 grand in the last four months, I think we'd be able to sell and pay it out in two, three months.
[23:41] Yeah.
[23:42] Easily.
[23:42] Yeah, I think it's getting pretty exciting.
[23:45] Wow.
[23:45] Yeah.
[23:46] That's the goal.
[23:47] Yeah, yeah.
[23:48] I get financially aroused.
[23:49] Yeah.
[23:50] So going back is when we started, you've also then added another investment property to your personal world.
[23:56] We have.
[23:57] Yep.
[23:57] And you've added, you've set up with the financial planners, you've set up a self-managed super fund and you've put two properties in that as well.
[24:04] Yep.
[24:04] Yep.
[24:06] Why were you not happy with your previous super funds?
[24:10] How were they invested?
[24:11] Just industry funds?
[24:12] Just industry funds.
[24:14] Just whoever I was working with at the time.
[24:16] They used AMP or QSuper or whoever.
[24:19] Yep, just a default fund.
[24:20] Yep, used to go with that.
[24:21] And I think we didn't know.
[24:23] We didn't know what we could do with our super.
[24:24] Had you ever sat with a financial planner?
[24:26] Yeah, we did.
[24:27] A couple of years ago.
[24:28] A few years ago we did.
[24:29] And they were going to...
[24:31] turn the world around, make it all beautiful, but it was just too hard.
[24:34] And we weren't in the position, well we didn't think we were in the position to pay the fee to get the, this is dumb right?
[24:39] It was a big fee.
[24:40] Invest in ourselves to get the return.
[24:43] To get the advice to...
[24:44] I don't know, that's stupid.
[24:45] Okay.
[24:45] I'm going to say it out loud.
[24:47] Okay.
[24:48] So yeah, we didn't realise that we could have had properties in our super, we...
[24:54] Well, not all financial planners are licensed to even go there, right?
[24:57] A lot of them can only do stocks, bonds, funds, et cetera.
[25:00] And they didn't talk about property at the other one.
[25:01] It was just stocks and stuff like that.
[25:04] And you guys are obviously comfortable with bricks and mortar because you've got your first home, you've kept that, you've bought the next one.
[25:09] And now we're in a position to sell the first one.
[25:12] Now, the first property you were in, did you move out of that within the last six years?
[25:17] No.
[25:18] Yep.
[25:19] Just 12 months.
[25:20] So literally we've moved out of that.
[25:22] We've bought a new one.
[25:23] We like it.
[25:23] We're happy.
[25:24] So we could talk to the accountant and use the six-year no CGT rule to say, hey, that's our old principal place of residence.
[25:31] We're selling it and you don't pay any capital gains tax.
[25:34] And now you've got your new principal place of residence.
[25:37] Yep.
[25:38] Wow.
[25:38] So there's a lot of motivation to look at selling that to just clear the mortgage then.
[25:42] Yeah.
[25:43] And you'll be debt free.
[25:44] Yeah.
[25:45] So it's fair to say you guys will be mortgage free this year.
[25:47] It's crazy to think about that.
[25:50] We're fantastic.
[25:51] At least I can go and spend my money.
[25:53] Hey, you've got plenty of it to spend if you're debt free.
[25:56] Yeah, well, that's right.
[25:56] You don't have to pay that two and a half grand every month.
[25:58] No, yeah.
[25:59] And just to think that that's...
[26:00] But like I said, when we got on...
[26:03] when you start seeing your kicking goals, you still need to reward.
[26:06] It's alright to kick the goals, but there needs to be reward at the end too.
[26:11] So, when we do sell the house, we want to go overseas again next year and do your... Let's book it now.
[26:16] Yeah.
[26:16] Let's book it now, and then we can hear about it on a part two podcast.
[26:20] Yeah, true.
[26:20] It's cheaper the earlier you book, right?
[26:22] Yeah.
[26:22] Let's book it.
[26:23] Where are you going to go?
[26:24] Well... Lisa's already got the plan ready.
[26:26] Yeah.
[26:29] I'm an ex-travel agent.
[26:30] What can I say?
[26:30] I'm always thinking about holidays, right?
[26:32] So where are we going?
[26:33] Well, I want to do European Christmas markets November next year.
[26:37] Okay.
[26:38] Next year?
[26:40] What about this year?
[26:42] I don't think my work's going to give me time off this year.
[26:44] Oh, you start a new job.
[26:46] We're a bit close this year.
[26:47] But next year.
[26:48] Definitely next year.
[26:49] Okay.
[26:49] Next year.
[26:49] Okay, nice.
[26:50] Well, let's book it anyway.
[26:51] Let's book it.
[26:52] Because, I mean, we're going to be debt-free this year.
[26:54] We've sent the sale of the old home to go through.
[26:57] No CGT.
[26:58] We've only just moved out of it.
[26:59] Perfect.
[27:00] Yep.
[27:00] All right.
[27:01] And who knows what laws and regulations are going to change around taxes, CGT, or anyone sitting on an old home right now worried about them changing that, fucking sell it.
[27:09] Yeah, right.
[27:10] In that six year rule, right?
[27:11] Who knows what they're going to do.
[27:13] And see, that there is exactly why people should be coming here.
[27:17] So, or wherever they choose to go.
[27:19] Getting some advice from someone, yeah.
[27:20] Because I'm not on top of these sorts of things.
[27:23] No, at the moment they're talking about taxing spare bedrooms, getting rid of the capital gains tax discount or waiving it on your home.
[27:30] They want to charge tax profits on it.
[27:32] Yeah, right.
[27:33] They want to get rid of the CGT discount on investments.
[27:35] They're talking about all this shit while we're all looking at it.
[27:38] But over here, they're passing a new legislation to encourage super funds and BlackRock and corporates to buy entire buildings.
[27:46] Yeah.
[27:46] So, like, I'm worried for my children in the future.
[27:49] They won't go and be negotiating against your children.
[27:53] They'll be negotiating against BlackRock, JP Morgan, the Canadian firefighter pension fund, you know, like CBUS, AMP.
[28:01] It's getting a bit scary.
[28:02] It's whole, like, we're going to be fighting tooth and nail if we don't get stuff now.
[28:07] So people need to go and get educated.
[28:09] It doesn't have to be me.
[28:10] Yeah, yeah.
[28:10] But go and learn from fucking somebody.
[28:12] Because if you don't know about this stuff, you go, I'll do that later.
[28:15] Yeah, yeah.
[28:15] And then the legislation or the law changes.
[28:17] You've missed the boat.
[28:18] Yeah, well, that's right.
[28:19] But we've got to remember not playing Monopoly.
[28:22] Right now you can take that house off the board and clear your mortgage.
[28:26] Yep.
[28:27] If something changed, imagine if you could have done that and you didn't and they changed the tax or the legislation or the law.
[28:33] Yeah.
[28:33] You'd fucking kick yourself.
[28:34] Yep.
[28:35] Well, we're going to sell it last year.
[28:36] Start up with Mayfair and end up with Old Kent Road.
[28:38] Yeah.
[28:39] White Chapel, is it?
[28:40] Or Old Ken Rose?
[28:41] The two shit ones at the start of the board?
[28:43] No one wants.
[28:44] That's what I always get.
[28:47] You said you were going to sell it last year?
[28:48] Yeah, this is before we come on to Infinity, so I'm glad we held on to it.
[28:53] So we've learned more what we can and can't do, so that's one good thing.
[28:57] But yes, we've got to get rid of that dog.
[28:58] That's all that dog.
[29:00] And we've added a personal property for investment, and we've got the super fund, you said.
[29:05] So instead of the normal defaulty thing,
[29:08] The financial planners have assessed all your funds doing this, so you've got to put bricks and mortar in that.
[29:13] So that's good.
[29:14] I mean, it's insured.
[29:15] It's pretty stable.
[29:16] And leverage.
[29:17] You're not getting a return on your couple of hundred grand a super.
[29:20] No.
[29:20] You're getting a return on the property values now.
[29:23] And we're doing all right value-wise at the moment in Australia because there's this shit housing crisis that's making people struggle.
[29:29] So at the moment, we've got a portfolio of sort of $4.5 million, $5 million of real estate.
[29:35] Sounds a lot.
[29:36] It's pretty good compared to home and the old home.
[29:38] Oh, my God.
[29:38] And it was so easy to achieve, too, once we sat down.
[29:42] I couldn't believe how quickly it happened.
[29:43] Yeah.
[29:44] Okay.
[29:44] It was fantastic.
[29:45] Scary?
[29:45] We went for a walk the morning after REM, so the Sunday morning, so everything had been complete.
[29:51] And our appointment wasn't until Saturday night.
[29:53] Okay.
[29:53] So we...
[29:54] What time?
[29:55] No, Sunday morning.
[29:56] Sunday morning.
[29:56] After the party.
[29:57] Yeah.
[29:58] Early.
[29:59] Did you do the after party?
[30:01] No.
[30:01] No, we weren't sensible.
[30:03] Okay, because the after parties get pretty wild.
[30:05] Yeah, yeah.
[30:06] I don't pull up well.
[30:07] I needed my head straight to see what we were going to be in for.
[30:11] So we went for a walk on the Sunday morning after we'd had our meeting and walked away with the three properties.
[30:17] And I said to Shane...
[30:21] my god this is like nearly four and a half million dollars who are we yeah you know what are we doing we used to look at people that had investments and go oh you've got to be rich to be able to do that like how have they done that maybe they've been left money or yeah you know and then you look around and then you look around the room and you're like we're all just the same peeps normal we do a really good job there's no dickheads in our community no there is a snuffle amount and get rid of them yeah
[30:50] You're right, it's just a group of normal people.
[30:53] Normal people that go to work.
[30:54] Teachers, makers, candlestick makers.
[30:56] They just, yeah, do the nine to five or the shift work or whatever it might be.
[31:00] Was it hard to swallow that you're capable of that and you deserve it and you can do it?
[31:06] Did it take a while to sink in?
[31:08] For me, it was pretty easy because you watch and you follow you guys and you see whatever everyone's doing and you watch the other clips and it's like, we could be doing this.
[31:19] Yeah.
[31:19] Yeah.
[31:20] Not to the degree where we are, I think in maybe one or two properties, but not what we bought.
[31:24] I was like, that was a wow.
[31:25] It's surreal.
[31:27] Okay.
[31:27] Because right now it's on paper.
[31:30] So it's a little surreal.
[31:31] Yeah.
[31:31] As it all goes through.
[31:32] Yeah.
[31:32] Okay.
[31:33] Yeah.
[31:34] And did you sell any toys?
[31:37] Well, yeah, I had it.
[31:40] Got rid of my Harley.
[31:42] Oh, no.
[31:44] But I'm not an outlaw or anything.
[31:45] I just rode it to work.
[31:46] Then I changed jobs.
[31:47] Yeah.
[31:48] I thought I was Jack's hair from Sons of Ani for a little bit.
[31:53] Now I've gone back to... Let's get some infinity patches.
[31:56] Yeah, I was going to do a hitch up for a patch.
[31:58] You can all get out there on your Vespers.
[32:00] Vespers.
[32:01] So I sold that.
[32:02] Electric bikes.
[32:04] So I went back to my old work, so I got a company car back.
[32:07] So we didn't need the car.
[32:10] For two years, we just lived with a car and a motorbike and got rid of the car and, yeah, we just got rid...
[32:15] So I don't think we would have thought like that before Infinity though.
[32:18] So we had a car.
[32:21] We had the motorbike.
[32:22] Shane got a job with a vehicle.
[32:25] Yep.
[32:26] Great.
[32:26] So we've like, motorbike goes.
[32:28] Yep.
[32:28] And then I'm like, well, hang on.
[32:30] So many tears.
[32:30] I...
[32:32] I work from home sometimes.
[32:34] Yeah.
[32:35] And we're like, oh, the day you leave town, you can drop me at my office when I go to the office.
[32:40] Yeah.
[32:42] We're like, do we really need the car?
[32:44] Like, is that the next sacrifice we make?
[32:46] Right.
[32:46] So can we live with one car?
[32:48] And we're like, well, that's a loan we don't need.
[32:51] Really?
[32:51] So we can reduce our monthly repayment for the car.
[32:56] Insurance.
[32:57] Fuel, insurance, rego.
[32:58] Yeah.
[32:59] Yeah.
[32:59] Oh, that's a bit, right?
[33:00] That's a lot of money, yeah.
[33:02] So let's get rid of it.
[33:03] So we did that.
[33:05] And so far, so good.
[33:06] We're managing it.
[33:09] But I don't think we would have thought like that.
[33:12] No, definitely not.
[33:14] You do think about things a little differently.
[33:17] Okay.
[33:18] So is it fair to say, because you guys obviously are clearly getting, we've got $4.5 million of assets.
[33:24] We're going to sell the dog.
[33:25] Yeah.
[33:26] We're going to sell the old home.
[33:27] 100%.
[33:28] So that's going to go this year.
[33:29] Yep.
[33:30] That's going to pretty much clear the mortgage.
[33:31] There's no CGT on that because it's your old home, so that's important.
[33:35] So that's pretty much going to clear the mortgage.
[33:37] Between now and the sale, you'll have cleared the rest anyway.
[33:40] Yeah.
[33:40] There's no... You're debt free.
[33:42] Yeah.
[33:43] Now we've got your current loan of $420,000 that you owe $340,000 that you're going to owe zero.
[33:48] The limit's going to be $410,000, $420,000.
[33:50] Yeah.
[33:51] We can extract all of that and debt recycle it without even applying.
[33:55] And you've got $420,000 to go deploy into investments and buy more.
[34:00] It's exciting.
[34:01] You also have just taken your 420 grand home loan, that's bad debt, not deductible, once we pay it to zero and redraw it and invest with it, you just turned your home loan into a tax deductible investment loan without having to reapply.
[34:16] Yep.
[34:17] It's mind-blowing, yeah.
[34:18] Yeah.
[34:19] That's pretty sexy.
[34:20] Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[34:21] And then we go, okay, we'll add a couple more properties or we'll go do, I don't know, shitcoin art, wine, fucking collectible cars, whatever.
[34:28] Whatever you want to invest in.
[34:29] Something good, I hope, right?
[34:31] So tell me, you're going to be debt-free on your home this year.
[34:34] You're going to have a portfolio of properties.
[34:36] You're going to go overseas on holidays next year.
[34:40] What's the big goal?
[34:42] Have you talked about that?
[34:43] Because when you talk about that walk on the beach a couple months ago and be like, shit, okay, all right, this is happening.
[34:50] Yeah.
[34:51] As it becomes real and then you do.
[34:52] I mean, you guys are effectively probably going to, from start to finish, you'll probably have been mortgage free following what we're talking about in nine months.
[35:00] Yeah.
[35:01] Yeah, you've got something to sell, sure.
[35:02] Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[35:03] You decided to sell it.
[35:04] Yeah.
[35:04] You've still done the work, right?
[35:06] Yeah.
[35:06] You've still knocked down 80 grand of debt in four months.
[35:09] What's the big goal?
[35:09] Have you ever talked about that together?
[35:12] What's the end goal?
[35:13] Love to retire comfortably at 60.
[35:17] Okay.
[35:18] Yeah.
[35:18] So you've got another 30 years ahead of you.
[35:20] Yeah, I wish.
[35:22] His body says.
[35:23] My body doesn't say that.
[35:25] Yeah, like travel.
[35:25] Yeah.
[35:26] Yeah.
[35:28] Just a couple of times a year, be able to pick up and go nationally overseas in Doreesal.
[35:33] Just that.
[35:34] I don't think we actually have spoken as to what the big picture looks like at the end.
[35:40] No.
[35:41] That's what I was asking.
[35:42] I was curious.
[35:42] Yeah, no, I don't think we have.
[35:43] I was waiting for you to look at each other and go, oh, shit, we haven't talked about this yet.
[35:47] We've only talked about travel.
[35:48] Like, obviously, yeah.
[35:52] We haven't.
[35:52] Yeah, we haven't talked about staying in Harvard.
[35:55] We haven't.
[35:56] We haven't actually spoken about that.
[35:57] The kids would like us to stay in Harvard.
[35:58] Yeah.
[35:59] I think we're just looking at maybe one thing at a time to get ourselves.
[36:05] That mortgage was the big thing.
[36:07] That was the main, that was the focus.
[36:08] That was the way it was.
[36:11] And then maybe other conversations start happening after that.
[36:14] We'll have to do a part two of this then to go, okay, well, the home's paid off, the holiday's booked, and what's our big picture goal together now?
[36:20] Yep.
[36:21] And that, you know, travel, this, that.
[36:22] Might be able to do it live from Mykonos.
[36:24] Yep.
[36:25] Or maybe not you.
[36:26] Hey, I'll come.
[36:27] I'll come.
[36:28] Absolutely.
[36:29] So tell me this, it's a big turnaround, right?
[36:32] It's okay, it was all automated.
[36:34] We're wrong for investing.
[36:36] Now we've plucked the bindies out of the feet and gone, hey, it's this simple.
[36:39] It literally is this convoluted bullshit, right?
[36:43] It's this.
[36:44] And the banks market it too.
[36:46] Oh, we've got buckets.
[36:47] We've got all these.
[36:48] It's like, fuck no.
[36:49] It's this simple, right?
[36:51] You never have to, in this structure, you never worry about a bill coming out.
[36:55] No.
[36:55] Because you're 80 grand ahead of your mortgage.
[36:57] You don't have to monitor something in a spreadsheet.
[36:59] Because you're 80 grand ahead of your mortgage.
[37:01] It's on your internet banking.
[37:02] Vacuum died this month.
[37:04] Oh.
[37:04] Buy a new one.
[37:05] Happy days.
[37:07] Yeah.
[37:07] Previously, we may have put that on an interest-free, or we might have put that on the credit card.
[37:12] But there's no, that fear of something happening.
[37:14] It's just gone.
[37:15] It's gone, yeah, definitely.
[37:16] In four months.
[37:17] Yeah.
[37:18] So for the people tuning at home, like you said, oh, the Rose Walls, they were similar ages, similar super.
[37:24] But for someone tuning that isn't part of this weird Infinity Family crazy cult-like freaking movement, what are some tips you guys could give from your experience in the last four months?
[37:35] Like what have you learnt in this process to go, you definitely need to do this.
[37:39] You're fucking sure as shit need to stop doing that.
[37:42] Like what are some of the things you could share for someone at home?
[37:44] We tried budgeting before, but the good thing about this is someone's accountable.
[37:50] Like, yeah, you've got your FFF, but you're accountable.
[37:53] Hang on.
[37:54] We know what the end goal is and we see what we've chopped away so quickly.
[37:57] It's just a good, easy structure.
[38:01] That was the easy part.
[38:02] Just a structure.
[38:03] You should stick to it.
[38:04] Listen.
[38:04] Listen.
[38:05] Just listen.
[38:06] Follow the process.
[38:08] And I go back to that hairdresser analogy again.
[38:10] You guys know what you're doing.
[38:12] You have an end goal for what you're trying to help us achieve.
[38:16] So listen to that.
[38:17] My hairdresser's going to be a plastic surgeon to try to make me look good.
[38:21] Can't make strawberry jam in a straw, right?
[38:25] um but it's yeah and just the little things like um you know we don't go out for dinner as much but when we do you know last two weeks we've been out twice um and it yeah you're not fearful of doing that you've got the money there it's ready to go do you enjoy it more
[38:43] I think so.
[38:44] Yeah.
[38:44] I think because you're not doing it.
[38:45] You're actually going, hey, we're going for a date on this night and a nice meal instead of just fucking take away every night on the credit card.
[38:50] Oh, yeah.
[38:51] And look, we were lucky.
[38:52] We weren't big takeaways, but people, but it's just little things.
[38:57] As I said, the vacuum died.
[38:58] It's not a stress.
[38:59] Yeah.
[39:00] Um,
[39:01] We know statistically most Aussie families can't cover a sort of $3,000 to $5,000 emergency.
[39:06] Like they're screwed if they vacuum the tyres.
[39:08] Some of them can't even cover a $500, right?
[39:10] Sad, right?
[39:11] It's paycheck to paycheck.
[39:12] Yeah.
[39:13] And don't get me wrong, probably 10 years ago we probably weren't quite paycheck to paycheck, but you didn't want to stretch it out too long because you bought things you didn't need.
[39:24] You go to your closet, you go, I don't wear two thirds of that.
[39:26] Yeah.
[39:26] And you just buy.
[39:27] Oh, yeah.
[39:28] That's probably the other thing is, do you really need it?
[39:31] Yeah.
[39:32] Need.
[39:32] What are we saying?
[39:33] Want versus need.
[39:34] Yeah.
[39:35] And while I went through that exercise recently, it just turned everything because I'd lost a heap of weight, put it back.
[39:39] Now I'm fucking training again.
[39:40] I've got to keep it off for a change.
[39:41] I found it.
[39:42] Yeah, well, no, you haven't quite.
[39:43] Trust me, I found it.
[39:44] But I just turned all the coat hangers backwards.
[39:47] And then I put a heap of shorts and stuff and drawers in other drawers.
[39:50] I taped the drawers and if I don't open the drawer and that coat hanger is still backwards at the end of this month on the first of the next month, it's all going to charity.
[39:57] True, right?
[39:58] And there was some really fancy stuff I said to my assistant, you know, like...
[40:01] I bought this phenomenal fucking jacket.
[40:04] Just sell it because it's worth a gazillion dollars.
[40:07] But what am I going to do?
[40:08] Keep it because it's worth a gazillion dollars?
[40:09] I don't fucking wear it.
[40:10] Don't reach for it.
[40:11] You don't need it.
[40:11] She just sold it online.
[40:13] So it's interesting that we tend to fill our lives with stuff.
[40:17] And our life hasn't... Because we're on this FFF, it's tight.
[40:22] But our life hasn't gone, shit, we can't do this.
[40:25] But you could change that by $100 a week if you want.
[40:28] We don't need to.
[40:29] We're not missing out on anything.
[40:31] If we're missing out, like, we're not missing out.
[40:34] How long did it take the two of you back in March, April, when we went through all of this, showed you the numbers, did the calculator?
[40:41] How long did it take to stop just card, card, spend, spend, everything you were doing, right, the barefooting, wrongfooting, to following the food, fuel and fun and actually sticking to it?
[40:52] What was your mental adjustment period?
[40:54] Did you do it straight away and just went, fuck it, we're in?
[40:56] Did it take three weeks, eight weeks?
[41:00] We had multiple accounts then and you could fudge stuff, but...
[41:03] now you can't audit their accounts please team audit their accounts
[41:12] But once you got rid of all those accounts, because we didn't get rid of all the accounts until we came on board, we narrowed things down.
[41:18] They were there.
[41:19] So probably a good couple of weeks.
[41:22] And it was like, if we're going to do it properly, so there's a line in the sand.
[41:26] Yeah, it was pretty easy.
[41:27] Shane's definitely the spender in the family.
[41:29] And you mentioned before, you stitched you and said it was you last week.
[41:33] No, I just put one on it.
[41:35] So how helpful or weird has it been having someone looking over your shoulder?
[41:40] It's been great.
[41:40] Like, you don't notice it.
[41:42] We've never had to have Corey tap us on the shoulder.
[41:44] Okay.
[41:45] He's been good.
[41:46] But... Cos... Yeah, I don't think we've caused him any grief.
[41:49] Do you feel any sense of obligation to him to make sure that you're stuck to your guns?
[41:54] Yeah, you do, because...
[41:56] If he's taking his time to look at us, you don't want it to blow out.
[42:02] You want to be structured to what you're doing and just follow that.
[42:05] It's a bit of discipline, but it doesn't take weeks to get used.
[42:09] Once you're on board, if you're not on board, you soon find out pretty quickly.
[42:13] But once you're on board, you're on board.
[42:14] Yeah, and you just start working a bit smarter.
[42:16] You're doing Woolies online, so you're not doing the... We can collect and meal prep maybe.
[42:21] Exactly right, and you're not walking around the aisles and putting in things you don't need.
[42:25] I've got Shane out of the centre aisle of Aldi, not looking for ski masks and...
[42:31] Portable spas or whatever they've got on for the week.
[42:33] Whatever the special is that everyone's lining up for.
[42:35] I need that.
[42:37] And then we don't particularly do too many date nights as such, but ours are more date mornings.
[42:42] So we will go for a walk in the morning, take the dog, and we always get a coffee.
[42:47] We do cafe every morning because it's the only time we get.
[42:50] We gym in the morning with the PT or walk on the beach before that.
[42:54] And it's cafe.
[42:55] We sit down, have a coffee and a brekkie together, have some and we talk because then our day is just wild until we go to bed.
[43:01] Yeah.
[43:01] So that's basically what our little routine is.
[43:04] And, you know, I think it works well for us.
[43:08] So, and I feel like also that we,
[43:12] are now on the same journey together.
[43:15] So, you know, in years gone by, like Shane's done triathlons or he still rides his bike and stuff, which is very much, you know, I don't do those sorts of things.
[43:25] So it's two separate things, you know.
[43:28] But now it's like this is our little team thing.
[43:31] Are you going to do a triathlon?
[43:32] God, no.
[43:33] Oh, I was just checking.
[43:34] God, no.
[43:36] I'm not explaining myself correctly.
[43:38] But we've got this little team going for a common goal.
[43:43] And that's our common goal is to live.
[43:45] When you go together, you go faster.
[43:47] Yes.
[43:47] Yeah.
[43:48] As opposed to.
[43:49] I was always a handbrake, sign everything down.
[43:51] Okay.
[43:51] Till my age.
[43:52] Oh, I wouldn't say that.
[43:52] Okay.
[43:53] But yeah, it's just different now.
[43:55] And of course, we're a different age and we're looking at things differently.
[43:57] But I feel like we've connected much better to get that done.
[44:03] The number one thing I hear from everybody we work with after the first couple of months is we're a stronger couple.
[44:09] 100%.
[44:09] We actually have weird, creepy, exciting, sexy conversations about money before we spend it and use it and this and that.
[44:17] And we could spend more, but we don't.
[44:19] And we're aligned.
[44:20] It's like a united front.
[44:22] Unbreakable.
[44:22] Yeah, that's right.
[44:23] Sort of like beforehand, you just didn't want to talk about money.
[44:25] It's just an un...
[44:27] It's just a... Like, Dave, we've always shared the same accounts and everything like that.
[44:30] Yeah.
[44:31] But we've always had joint accounts, but we've never spoken about money.
[44:34] Yeah.
[44:35] Or we might speak, you've got no money, or what are you spending on, but...
[44:38] But now it's no dramas.
[44:40] Yeah.
[44:41] You just look forward to that.
[44:42] Guys, you've crushed it.
[44:43] Like 80 grand in four months, multiple properties, four and a half, five million bucks of assets.
[44:49] Home's going to be paid off in the next couple of months, hopefully, with the sale.
[44:54] I'm really keen to get you back for everyone who's met you today to actually understand where we end up in three months, six months, if that's okay.
[45:00] I'd love to have you back and share again.
[45:02] And I think people are going to really benefit from this.
[45:06] Before I ask you what you want to pick my brain on, any other tips you could leave anyone with today and go, Hey, yeah...
[45:13] you know sell your old home and yes structure works what are some of the things is there anything you've gone this was really hard to overcome or process selling the house or the car or i thought budgeting was going to suck but it actually lets us plan to go out like any other little tips you could leave anyone with or things that will be hard for them to process
[45:35] I think it's definitely the old home.
[45:39] So not that we had an emotional attachment to that, but I guess people will have an emotional attachment.
[45:48] And just to maybe remove that, like remove that...
[45:52] you know, that attachment to that property, sell it, move on and head for, you know, something greater.
[45:58] Take all that tax free cash and pay yours off and then go get three or four.
[46:03] Yeah.
[46:03] I think people acknowledge that while they keep the old one saying it'll go up.
[46:07] They don't acknowledge all the interest they pay on their one that's not deductible.
[46:11] And if they didn't have it for 30 years, they could probably buy two or three.
[46:15] I think we really struggle with that until you talk to an expert.
[46:17] And mind you, half of my industry is still like, no, no, we just want to sell you two loans.
[46:22] I don't want to sell you any loans.
[46:24] Sell that, pay that off, and you don't need me.
[46:26] All the best, guys.
[46:27] That's probably the only time we've had a house loan.
[46:28] Because every time we've had a house loan, they've given us multiple loans within the loan.
[46:32] Yeah, splits of it.
[46:34] And I've never got my head around it, but they say, you've got to do it.
[46:37] Yeah.
[46:38] But this is just so easy.
[46:40] Yeah.
[46:40] So I think, yeah, listen, follow the structure.
[46:44] You guys know what you're doing.
[46:46] Yeah.
[46:48] Just go with it.
[46:49] So I think that's – and then just have that common goal.
[46:52] Like if both of you aren't on the same page, it's not going to work.
[46:55] That's why we say it's application based.
[46:57] If your partner's not here, people are like, oh, but I've been here all weekend.
[47:00] I'm like, I don't fucking care.
[47:01] No, exactly.
[47:02] Get your partner to come back.
[47:04] You have to be together.
[47:05] Yeah, that whole separate bank account thing.
[47:08] I mean, you talk about it a lot, but get on the same page.
[47:13] I joke, I'm like, people share fucking bodily fluids and they don't want to share a fucking bank account?
[47:16] Yeah.
[47:17] There's something seriously going wrong in that relationship.
[47:20] Oh, money's different.
[47:21] Your health and your body's probably just as fucking important or more important.
[47:25] That's a key thing, yeah.
[47:27] I have a good chuckle over that.
[47:30] I can't process it.
[47:31] I mean, yeah, brand new relationship, sure.
[47:33] Okay.
[47:34] But, you know, you're married or you're living under the same roof and you're sharing expenses or more.
[47:38] It's like, I just can't process it.
[47:40] Yeah.
[47:40] No, how could I?
[47:41] Even in my banking career, I'm like, what the fuck?
[47:43] Yeah, that's a bit of a different one.
[47:45] Yeah.
[47:46] But, you know, I think that's probably the main things.
[47:48] And just, you know, look for other opportunities.
[47:52] And by that, instead of the date night or the going out every week or the clothing, you know,
[47:58] Can you buy?
[47:59] There's plenty of marketplace or plenty of things on Facebook where you can get the second-hand version or whatever.
[48:06] Put an apron on him, let him get in the kitchen.
[48:08] I have two meals.
[48:09] Oh, my God.
[48:10] I did home ec for seven years.
[48:11] We've eaten spaghetti bolognese every second night.
[48:13] Hey, that's my dish.
[48:14] That's all I cook.
[48:15] You two will be great at a dinner party.
[48:17] I'm sorry.
[48:17] Put some chilli in it and it's fancy.
[48:20] Change the sauce.
[48:21] Exactly.
[48:22] Shells, spirals, feta churn.
[48:25] Mix it up.
[48:25] Mix it up.
[48:26] Different cheeses.
[48:27] A bit of Parmesan, call it done.
[48:30] Yeah, so I think that's just, yeah.
[48:33] You should be bloody proud of yourselves, guys.
[48:34] And I really, really, really appreciate you coming and sharing and being so open on us.
[48:38] And hopefully there's just one family out there that listens and goes, shit, we're just like them.
[48:42] Like you and I, we're just like the Rose Walls.
[48:43] Yeah, yeah.
[48:44] All right, we've got to get our ass into gear.
[48:46] So I want to celebrate your success.
[48:48] Thank you.
[48:48] We'll definitely get you back.
[48:50] But before we finish, is there anything you want to pick my brain on at all, whatever it may be?
[48:57] Yeah, for me, so obviously we came in in our 50s and you've got clients from 20 upwards, I guess.
[49:07] is looking at the individual and coming up with the plan.
[49:10] So obviously you're not just saying, I want Lisa and Shane to buy this, this and this.
[49:14] You've got a process and a plan, right?
[49:16] Yeah, an audit process.
[49:17] Yeah, so I guess I'm wondering what goes into your thoughts to creating that plan?
[49:22] Oh, jeez, if you could get inside here, you'd need to spend hundreds of thousands on therapy and I've still got more issues than Vogue.
[49:29] There's a lot of things that go into it.
[49:31] So first and foremost, it's a really good question.
[49:34] The number one thing we look for is to just eradicate non-deductible debt.
[49:39] So when you come to me and you've got a $100,000 Land Cruiser and a $100,000 Caravan and you use it twice a year, then you have interest on that.
[49:46] So the 200 grand of debt...
[49:48] It costs you $400, plus rego, plus insurance.
[49:51] I'm like, guys, it's a $450,000 caravan and car.
[49:55] And you swap it in three to five years and do it up.
[49:57] So I'm like, let's just grab the $500 figure, divide that by 10 years.
[50:02] That's $50,000, $100,000.
[50:04] However you want to break it up, $25,000.
[50:06] You start going, oh, we could spend $25,000 a year on holidays or $50,000 a year on holidays for 10 years.
[50:11] When you figure that out, you go, shit, that's not Bali on the bing tanks.
[50:14] That's a fucking...
[50:16] nice holiday we're at the fucking hooty tooty ritz carlton whatever right so the first thing we'll do is look at how any client potential client is structured and are they upside down because we'll go i paid cash for my car i'm like do you have a 30-year home loan well then you didn't pay cash for your fucking car if you have a 30-year home loan and you say you paid cash for your car you are paying your car off over 30 years
[50:40] Sell the car.
[50:41] It's a depreciating asset anyway.
[50:43] Put the capital off your home loan, which is an appreciating.
[50:47] You've now created equity in an appreciating asset.
[50:50] Yep.
[50:50] You can now use that equity to draw and invest and make more money per annum than the cost of a car.
[50:58] Those profits allow you to fund a car even if the interest rate's 1% dearer than your home loan.
[51:03] Yeah.
[51:04] So it's starting with these really clinical, critical, mathematical things where the average dodo broker or banker and even poor people, you know, people in society, everyday people.
[51:16] I say poor as in not financially poor, like poor buggers.
[51:20] that they're told, well, your home loan's six and a car loan's seven.
[51:23] So just get a car loan.
[51:25] Or actually don't get a car loan.
[51:27] Just pay for it in cash or put it in your home loan for 30 years.
[51:31] And there's all variances to this advice and strategy.
[51:34] It's different case by case.
[51:35] But we'll start with things like that.
[51:37] Like what toys do you have?
[51:38] What assets do you have?
[51:40] I met a lot of people that have got a bit of crypto, a bit of shares.
[51:43] Like I'm diversified.
[51:45] And it's like, okay, you're diversified.
[51:46] You've got $80,000 of shit.
[51:49] None of it is outperforming your home loan interest rate.
[51:53] And if it was, you'd have to pay tax on the profits if you took it off the Monopoly board.
[51:58] So it's very mathematical.
[51:59] Again, we just stick everything into calculations.
[52:01] And go, right, those stocks you're claiming are performing at 5.8%, but your home loan's 6.2%.
[52:08] Fucking sell them.
[52:09] Put it off your home loan.
[52:10] Now, if you do want to have the stocks, redraw that.
[52:13] Now you have a tax-deductible investment loan to repurchase the stocks
[52:18] When you leverage and invest with deductible debt, you'll go, oh, is my share portfolio outperforming the interest cost to have the money?
[52:26] Yeah.
[52:27] Then you realize whether you're an investor or a loser.
[52:30] Yeah.
[52:30] Because if you don't profit the interest expense from your investment, you're not even outperforming what it costs to borrow money.
[52:37] That's shit.
[52:38] Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[52:39] So it's all these simple little things where people go, oh...
[52:43] I call them ah fuck moments, not aha moments, right?
[52:46] Or light bulb.
[52:47] They're like, holy shit.
[52:51] So we'll start with trying to lend you the least amount of money possible for the lowest mortgage broker commission that exists.
[53:00] If I do that, I'll actually earn more.
[53:04] So everyone's out there trying to get the biggest loan at the biggest commission and they never talk to you again and you get an automatic email or Christmas card or birthday card.
[53:12] Yep.
[53:12] Right?
[53:13] I'm trying to write the smallest loan possible to put you in the strongest position that you end up getting 16 other loans that are tax deductible.
[53:22] It's very opposite to what the industry's taught to do.
[53:26] And I think that all industries can learn that if you sell by a solution service, it actually sells at scale.
[53:37] So instead of just trying to get a big loan for $500,000, like I meet you and I look at your numbers and I'm like, guys, if you sell that, you owe almost nothing on your home.
[53:44] I'd rather you do that.
[53:45] But I'd love to get you an equity facility out of your home for $400,000 and let you go invest.
[53:51] And you go, that makes sense.
[53:53] I've got a $400,000 tax deductible debt and no home loan.
[53:56] You go off and get a heap of property.
[53:58] Then I get the loans on the other properties you go out and pick.
[54:01] So it's the opposite of what our industry does because my industry is full of salespeople.
[54:06] Yep.
[54:07] There's a difference between a salesperson and a strategic advisor.
[54:11] So all of our team, good question to train first.
[54:14] How do we minimize any debt you've got?
[54:16] How do we audit everything you have?
[54:18] We get in external financial planners, economists, solicitors, accountants, and we all, and this one, no one does.
[54:25] People listening to this, stick eight people on a Zoom or in a room and get them all looking at your position.
[54:32] Yeah, cool.
[54:32] Otherwise, I tell you to sell the house and pay off your loan and I get no mortgage commission.
[54:38] It's great.
[54:38] It's the best for you.
[54:39] Good free advice.
[54:41] Your accountant says, oh, no, don't sell the investment property because it could go up in value and that's extra tax return work I do each year.
[54:48] Yeah.
[54:48] And you get tax benefits.
[54:49] Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[54:50] Now, if you sell that, your tax return fee you pay them each year is probably halved.
[54:54] Because all you're doing is your employment tax return.
[54:57] You go to the shopping mall and do it.
[54:58] But if you've got an investment property, it's bigger, it's more complex.
[55:02] It's not that they deliberately advise this way, but they're all set in their way.
[55:07] It's always been done this way.
[55:09] So the first thing we do is we wanna do the opposite, contrarian of everyone else.
[55:13] How do we make sure you've got as little bad debt as possible, as much equity as possible, and then how can you, based on your personal, I wanna own nothing, I wanna own everything.
[55:24] Right, now let's reverse engineer.
[55:25] To get to I wanna own everything here, and we're here, let's reverse engineer it.
[55:31] Let's not piss fart around with six different people.
[55:35] I've got my finance guy and my car lady and my tax.
[55:39] Let's all work together for you.
[55:42] Even if we all get paid less, we end up with more customers.
[55:45] So it's back to that keeping it simple, right?
[55:47] Keep it simple.
[55:49] Everything, little debt as possible that's bad and then build from there.
[55:53] And that gives you a big concrete slab.
[55:56] I mean, everybody really just wants to own their own home.
[55:59] Definitely.
[56:00] And if you can own your own home and then have more money than the old age pension...
[56:04] You're better than fucking 99% of society in Australia.
[56:06] Got to be happy days, yeah.
[56:07] So that's how change lives financially and change them globally.
[56:11] Like we're on a big, big mission now, even overseas.
[56:14] Yeah.
[56:14] We're going to fuck shit up.
[56:16] Good.
[56:18] We'll watch.
[56:19] I can't die trying.
[56:20] I can't die trying.
[56:21] That's right.
[56:22] Wondering.
[56:23] So yeah.
[56:23] Any other questions?
[56:24] It's a good one.
[56:28] That was it for me.
[56:29] I got nothing.
[56:30] You're easy.
[56:31] I'm easy.
[56:32] All right.
[56:33] Well, it's been a pleasure.
[56:35] Very proud of what you've done.
[56:36] You should be very proud.
[56:37] I think the homework is, before we get back on air again together in a few months, is what's the big picture goal?
[56:42] Yep.
[56:42] Yeah.
[56:42] We sell the old home.
[56:43] We clear the debt.
[56:44] What's the big picture goal?
[56:46] Because to give you a bit of insight, my brain's going to move miles an hour.
[56:51] I could have you at REM this weekend because I already know, based on the sale of that property, the multiple new properties you could acquire.
[56:58] Wow.
[56:59] And instead of waiting three to six months for the sale to go through, we could buy them today and secure them today whilst the sale's going through, waiting for more rate drops and more market growth.
[57:09] I'm looking for one to go to another room.
[57:11] See you on the weekend.
[57:15] and that's how my brain works I was going to say you're like you said men can't multitask you're talking and you're I explain it like CSI you know that crime where there's things my brain is so fucked up but only for this stuff right flat pack I'm like an ashtray on a motor useless god
[57:34] Can't like destructions, not instructions, but this stuff, all I'm talking about, oh, well, hang on, that's going to sell and we're going to have that 420.
[57:40] We can pull that back out.
[57:42] There's four 100 grand deposits or two 210 grand deposits.
[57:47] So my brain's gone off over here for you guys, but we have to stop and take stock of maybe you don't want any more investments.
[57:56] What is the big picture goal?
[57:57] That's what I'd need for you to go for a walk on the beach today and go...
[58:01] shit what are we we might need a drink over a long lunch what do we actually what is the big picture goal when's enough enough yeah okay what do we need when we want to retire do we want to retire in five years yeah 10 or 15 because then i can reverse engineer what you do or don't do yeah because you need time yeah to get that return
[58:19] Yeah.
[58:20] And I think we think we've probably got time before we come up with the big picture stuff, don't we?
[58:25] But we kind of need.
[58:26] Yeah.
[58:26] We haven't got to that.
[58:27] I know what I'd build as a big picture, but it might not be your picture.
[58:30] You might sit down and go, this is a shit movie.
[58:34] So far the movies I've watched have been good with you guys.
[58:36] Oh, there you go.
[58:37] There you go.
[58:38] I haven't got a bad one yet.
[58:40] There you go.
[58:40] So really excited.
[58:42] Yeah.
[58:43] I'm going to leave you with that little, oh, shit, that's a brain fart, right?
[58:47] Because it's the kind of like, why wait?
[58:49] Well, we know we're going to sell it.
[58:50] We know we're going to clear the mortgage.
[58:51] We know we're going to pull that.
[58:53] Well, let's go do what we need to do because it's not going to get any cheaper.
[58:56] Yeah.
[58:57] In it with another rate drop.
[58:58] They've just done the first homeowner's, hey, it doesn't matter what your income is.
[59:02] We'll all let you buy with 5% now with no mortgage insurance.
[59:05] Yeah.
[59:06] There is actually caps on that property value but not the income.
[59:09] Yeah.
[59:10] That's going to send the market wild from the bottom.
[59:12] Yep.
[59:12] Up through the middle.
[59:13] Yeah.
[59:14] So we're going to see all properties are going to go up in value.
[59:17] Yeah.
[59:18] So the market won't wait for us.
[59:20] The next round.
[59:20] Next round.
[59:21] The next round.
[59:22] See you at Rem on the weekend.
[59:24] Well done, guys.
[59:24] It's been an absolute pleasure.
[59:26] Thank you.
[59:26] Thank you.
[59:27] Thanks.
[59:28] You're fucking gone.
[59:29] See ya.
