[0:00] there's money there yeah and we can no stress we talk about really positive things about money yeah positive things about our family mm-hmm
[0:08] Even driving here on a holiday, you know, like you're driving and we talk about it.
[0:12] We're talking about, not in a negative way.
[0:14] It's like, what do you think our next goals are going to be?
[0:16] Because we just smashed that in a year and we're like, well, what are we going to do next?
[0:19] You know, and it's all positive.
[0:20] It's not, oh, infinity's got the whip out.
[0:22] We have to do these things.
[0:25] We made choices as part of it.
[0:26] You put all these options out and teach us so many things, which is amazing.
[0:31] Like we've learned so many things about money.
[0:33] And it's a shame that it took us in our 50s to learn about those things, you know.
[0:37] But...
[0:38] Money isn't root of all evil, the fucking lack of it is.
[0:40] Not money, the lack of understanding money.
[0:43] When I put that into emphasis, when I realised that psychological effect and how it hit our family, I have to be in the fucking way.
[0:49] You are now watching the Money Mentor Podcast.
[0:52] With Graham Holm.
[0:53] Graham Holm.
[0:54] Graham Holm.
[0:54] Graham Holm.
[0:59] Hey guys, I'm Rick.
[1:01] I'm a relationship manager here at Infinity and I've got Kylie and Sam with me today.
[1:06] How are we guys?
[1:07] Good.
[1:07] Yeah, good night.
[1:08] Really good.
[1:09] It's nice meeting you guys in person.
[1:11] Much better than the Zoom calls.
[1:13] It is, isn't it?
[1:14] Yes.
[1:16] A lot more personal.
[1:16] I can actually shake your hand and say hi.
[1:18] It is.
[1:18] Yeah, first time I've actually met in person.
[1:21] Yeah, it's rare.
[1:23] No, it's great.
[1:25] Now...
[1:26] Before we jump in and everything like that, tell me a little bit about yourselves.
[1:32] We're with Sam and Kylie.
[1:33] Sam and Kylie, yeah.
[1:34] We're from Toowoomba.
[1:35] We have two grown-up children who've...
[1:39] Flew in the coop, as you say.
[1:40] Like they've finished university and got their careers started and not living home.
[1:45] So it's just the two of us.
[1:46] And we have a crazy little dog that cost us a fortune called Remy, a pug.
[1:51] And she's like our substitute, like the kids say.
[1:54] You know, there's more photos of her and she does more things than we have with kids for a long time, all that sort of thing.
[1:59] And pretty much...
[2:02] Yeah, so we've been working for a year now, just over a year.
[2:05] Yep.
[2:07] And it's been an incredible journey.
[2:09] So much has changed.
[2:10] Like where we started last year, we couldn't fathom that we'd be in this position now.
[2:17] And that you guys would want to hear about it.
[2:18] Like even when we...
[2:20] You know, they said, can you come do a podcast?
[2:22] We're like, well, what do we hear about?
[2:24] What's it here about us?
[2:25] You know, what's so good about us?
[2:26] We've just followed what you guys have sort of recommended and made some big decisions, I suppose.
[2:32] But, you know, it was...
[2:34] It didn't seem that big a thing to us.
[2:36] Well, it is a big thing, but, you know, it's not really that special that everyone wants to hear about it, but apparently they do a little bit.
[2:42] You guys have a great story.
[2:45] And, yeah, I guess you just let the bakers bake and let the process follow and now here you are.
[2:52] No bad debt.
[2:53] Home loans paid off.
[2:55] Got three investment properties.
[2:56] You guys are absolutely just crushing it.
[2:59] I'm so proud of you.
[3:00] Yeah, and our self-managed fund and we even have wills.
[3:04] Yeah, wills.
[3:05] You know, it just sounds like not much at all, but probably for the last, since the kids were finished high school and were at uni and things and we're thinking we really need to do our wills because it's like when they're five years old it says who's going to look after them and things like that.
[3:17] Yeah.
[3:18] And you just don't because there wasn't the cash.
[3:20] You think, oh, gee, how much is it?
[3:22] Yeah.
[3:23] You just won't do it.
[3:23] We've even got a will now, you know, like.
[3:26] it's it's weird it's just um yeah such a big change i suppose in we just clicked over 12 months yeah like what about a month ago i think yeah just clicked over being infinity for 12 months yeah which is incredible a hell of a lot of progress in 12 months guys yeah um now do you remember what you felt like uh emotionally uh and what the finances and everything were like prior to infinity
[3:52] Oh, yeah.
[3:53] You remember it.
[3:53] I think we'll always remember it, which is good.
[3:55] But, yeah, you do remember it.
[3:57] But it's good that you remember it, but it's nice not to be in that position anymore, I guess.
[4:02] But the – Money was always such a source of stress.
[4:04] We never really talked about it much because it was a source of stress.
[4:07] There never seemed to be –
[4:09] enough there or much there.
[4:10] No matter what you did.
[4:12] You know what we did, yeah.
[4:13] We tried budgeting really hard and we thought we were pretty good at that, mainly because at the end of your budget there was no money left so you couldn't really do much else.
[4:22] But that really wasn't much of a budget there.
[4:24] And we didn't get letters saying we haven't paid bills and things.
[4:26] So we were always paying bills, we were always paying our mortgage, things like that, but we were just kind of treading water a lot, not getting anywhere.
[4:32] Yeah.
[4:33] Didn't feel like we could afford to do...
[4:35] Much at all.
[4:36] We're always worried about what if the washing machine dies, what if the car dies.
[4:40] What if the kids need something still, even though they've grown up, what if something happens?
[4:45] Someone's going to drop their laptop at school and all those types of things.
[4:48] They're all big worries.
[4:51] Christmas time year was always really tough.
[4:53] You get through Christmas and that was good and then you've got the kids coming back to school and they need new shoes.
[4:57] And nothing fits.
[4:58] I'm sure now as a grown-up now, but you still remember just how hard that is and then they want to do sport and then...
[5:04] And then once you've paid all that out, usually half on the credit card, then ransom taxes come around.
[5:08] Yeah.
[5:09] Yeah.
[5:09] It was always just really tough.
[5:10] It's always heavy, I think.
[5:12] Yep.
[5:12] And really, you know, if you drove past a house, a lovely spot, quite a big house, needed a lot of work, but, you know, prestigious area for Toowoomba, all that kind of stuff.
[5:22] And you tell people, oh, you know, where do you live?
[5:24] Oh, I live near Picnic Point.
[5:25] And everyone goes, ooh.
[5:28] You know, and you go home and you're trying to pay that mortgage and you look at how much you've paid off and you think, where's it going?
[5:35] How's it ever going to get anywhere?
[5:37] Yeah.
[5:37] We're both going to be working until we're 70 plus and we're going to leave a mess.
[5:42] Not a mess, but we're going to leave a mess.
[5:44] We couldn't see that end point.
[5:47] Well, to work as much as anything, to retire, given we had this huge mortgage to pay off, it was just never going anywhere.
[5:53] And Kylie was hell-bent on finding the solution.
[5:59] They had to be able to crack them up.
[6:00] There's plenty of people out there who are, without being rude, not as intelligent as us, not as good income as we have as a family, and that's not being rude to anyone else.
[6:08] But there's plenty of people who have done it.
[6:10] Yeah.
[6:11] Why can't we do it?
[6:12] Why can't we crack that nut?
[6:13] So Carly looked at YouTube video after YouTube video trying to find the answer.
[6:18] And there's a lot of people out there.
[6:19] A lot of people trying to sell it.
[6:20] A lot of people offering so many different things and never quite, like I'd say, oh, that's really good.
[6:25] And Sam's a real maths person.
[6:26] He's the brain.
[6:28] And we'd watch it and he'd go, hmm.
[6:30] I don't know, get a piece of paper out and we'd be trying to calculate what this person's raving on about, saying it's so good.
[6:36] And you think, oh, it doesn't make sense.
[6:38] So you'd move on to the next person.
[6:39] Well, sometimes the maths would work but there was no real, there's nothing genuine about it.
[6:42] It was just someone trying to sell a system.
[6:44] Yeah.
[6:45] And then you cracked onto G and the Money Mentor ones.
[6:49] Watched a couple of podcasts.
[6:50] And sort of thought, this is a bit real.
[6:51] There's real people, people actually doing it.
[6:54] The maths works.
[6:55] We've been in...
[6:56] And it sounds pretty simple, but it's working.
[6:58] It sounds straightforward, you know.
[7:01] Paying off a home loan was our biggest thing.
[7:03] That's what we want to do.
[7:04] But we also, we've owned several houses over the years and renovated ourselves and thought, yeah, we know real estate.
[7:09] You buy a shitty house and you renovate it and you sell it for more.
[7:11] We're experts in it, yeah.
[7:13] And obviously you need nothing about real estate, but I thought we did a bit.
[7:17] And this all just resonated really well and was really genuine and we thought, you know what, this is the one to have a crack at.
[7:22] We knew we were at the point in our lives where, you know,
[7:25] With the kids moving out, we had that little bit of extra money coming in and we were budgeting so that we had extra and we built up a bit of a buffer there for ourselves.
[7:33] And we were investing in all sorts of things.
[7:34] You know, I've got a share here.
[7:35] Scatagun type things.
[7:37] And we thought at some point we need a financial advisor and an accountant as well.
[7:41] We didn't have an accountant either, but needed one.
[7:43] And we're going to have to spend money on that at some point.
[7:48] But they don't know each other and they're not good.
[7:50] One's going to say this isn't right and I'm going to sell you something else.
[7:52] Because you see that all the time.
[7:55] But this seemed genuine.
[7:56] We thought, well, we're going to have to spend a bit of money to do it.
[7:59] But it seems like it's worth it, so let's have a crack.
[8:01] And we did and it sort of... And here you are.
[8:04] And here we are.
[8:06] And our feelings about money now are...
[8:09] It's just not a stress.
[8:09] There's lots of it.
[8:10] Where was it before?
[8:12] Like where did it just magically fall?
[8:13] There's no money coming in.
[8:14] Where does it come from?
[8:15] Yeah, there's no money coming in.
[8:16] It's weird, yeah.
[8:17] There's money there.
[8:18] Yeah.
[8:18] And we can afford things.
[8:19] No stress.
[8:20] We talk about really positive things about money.
[8:22] Yep.
[8:22] Positive things about our family.
[8:24] Mm-hmm.
[8:25] even driving here on a holiday, you know, like you're driving and we talk about it.
[8:29] You're talking about not in a negative way.
[8:31] It's like what do you think our next goals are going to be?
[8:33] Because we just smashed that in a year and we're like, well, what are we going to do next?
[8:36] You know, and it's all positive.
[8:38] It's not, oh, Infinity's got the whip out.
[8:39] We have to do these things.
[8:41] We made choices as part of it.
[8:43] You put all these options out and teach us so many things, which is amazing.
[8:48] Like we've learned so many things about money.
[8:50] And it's a shame that it took us in our 50s to learn about those things.
[8:54] But we've got a lot of time.
[8:55] Better now than later, right?
[8:57] Yeah.
[8:57] Absolutely.
[8:58] Now, during your journey with Infinity, how did my role as an RM help you guys?
[9:04] Mm-hmm.
[9:05] Early on I think it was about understanding how the FFF worked.
[9:10] We had a budget of like $900 a week thinking and we were struggling to squeeze everything into that.
[9:16] Yeah, we were thinking, how do you get your coffee pods?
[9:18] We kind of did all the, we did the master class, but we sort of went away and thought, oh, my God, people are living on four, these people are joking.
[9:25] How are they having private health and how are they doing, how are they doing all these things?
[9:29] Because we didn't understand it.
[9:30] So RM really clarified those sort of things and understand how the FFF works and the fact that you can afford all these other things.
[9:40] If you stick to the FFF, the other stuff, you can afford it.
[9:42] There's money there for it.
[9:43] Don't stress about it.
[9:44] And that finally got through and we stuck to FFF and it just really worked.
[9:47] What are we down to now?
[9:49] 400.
[9:49] Yeah.
[9:50] Yeah, and we're a bit generous really, but we do talk about it a bit, but I think I'm probably keen to drop a bit and Sam's a bit, you know.
[9:56] So it'll just, I think over time we'll probably drop it a bit more.
[9:59] Yeah.
[10:00] Once we get set up in our new place a little bit better and get organised and have a bit of a rhythm.
[10:06] in the last few months to get settled where we are and a few family things going on that we've had to sort of work with.
[10:12] And just to be clear, I'm not making you eat two-minute noodles, am I?
[10:16] Definitely not.
[10:17] No.
[10:17] We eat too well.
[10:18] That's why our FFF should drop a bit because we have –
[10:22] We have really nice food.
[10:24] We have excellent.
[10:25] And to be fair, Kai is a pretty good cook, so we have really good quality ingredients.
[10:30] From both of us.
[10:32] Yeah, we eat too well.
[10:33] Yeah, we have very good quality food.
[10:34] We've got cooked at home, so we don't really feel like we need to go out to dinner very much.
[10:37] We still don't go through a bit, but we have really nice food at home.
[10:42] We just don't feel like we're missing out on things.
[10:43] I don't think we're missing out on anything.
[10:45] No.
[10:45] At all.
[10:45] It's like what's so hard about this FFF thing?
[10:47] It's actually easier.
[10:47] I think the psychology, we were talking about that before, the psychology is different because before we didn't have very much and everything was just a grind and we were pretty negative about going to work and negative about where the money was and you look in the bank account.
[11:00] Yep.
[11:01] And then you want to spend more to make yourself feel better.
[11:03] It's a different sort of psyche whereas now we might walk past something and think, oh, that would be nice.
[11:08] Then we go, no, it's not, you know.
[11:09] Like we don't need to satisfy ourselves by spending money anymore.
[11:13] We can see it doing so many other things that it's much better than having anything new or going out for dinner or doing different things and we certainly don't miss out on anything.
[11:21] I think the RM is, I think it's been like, I mean,
[11:25] It's a really positive support.
[11:26] We can annoy you as much as we like.
[11:28] Check in regularly, not as a crack in the whip type thing at all.
[11:31] It's a really supportive thing that we feel like we're putting on top of what we're doing, but we like that touch point.
[11:38] We've always got a few questions about random changes, but it's really good to have that touch point and the support with it.
[11:44] And I think along the way we got to the point where –
[11:48] We were doing our FFF really well.
[11:51] We were just smashing our home loan.
[11:53] In the first few months, we'd paid more for home loan than the last probably two years.
[11:59] And we'd paid to be in infinity.
[12:02] And we'd paid a year's worth of health insurance things we'd never done before.
[12:05] And we were miles ahead.
[12:06] And we're thinking, okay, we want to get this investment property.
[12:09] So I want to get the investing side of it as well as paying off because that seems like it's going really well.
[12:13] Yep.
[12:14] And, you know, we were told you've got to get $200,000, you've got to save $200,000.
[12:18] We're at about $50,000.
[12:18] So we're getting a little bit annoyed at our RM.
[12:20] You know, like, how come, how come, how come?
[12:22] And it's not your fault.
[12:24] It's been three months.
[12:25] What the hell is going on?
[12:26] Why haven't we got 10 investment projects?
[12:28] Yeah, and we're trying to push it.
[12:29] You can push it, but then you've also got to get absorbed in it.
[12:32] And it's a community thing and it's getting...
[12:34] changing your psyche about everything, it takes a little bit of time and you can kind of rush it too much and then I think you can sort of get a bit annoyed with it.
[12:42] Whereas actually if you just follow the process, you're there.
[12:45] If we need to send a message about something, hey, you know, the washing machine's broken, something else, can we afford to do it?
[12:50] Like recently we said, well, we've done all these changes.
[12:54] Can we afford to go on a holiday?
[12:56] If you'd said no, we might have still done it.
[12:57] It's not like you're saying no, we can't do something.
[12:59] But you can say, well, what sort of holiday?
[13:01] Can we really afford it?
[13:02] Yeah, and then we say we're going to go, oh, yeah, yeah, you guys can do that.
[13:05] And it's like it's a bit of a team thing.
[13:08] I think the things that you do are amazing.
[13:10] I hate to think what some people ask you.
[13:13] Like I think we've been pretty good.
[13:15] I hate to think what you get asked and some people who don't want to, who are committed but not really committed.
[13:20] Yeah.
[13:20] I think that would be very frustrating for you guys in that, you know, you know it's going to work.
[13:25] And if people can just make those changes, it's going to happen.
[13:29] everyone's journey is different yeah right and uh and that's the fun part of my role it's like the the variety to it all not everyone's the exact same cookie cutter no um and i love that now during your journey did you have any like tough moments where you thought i can't do this like we can't do this
[13:50] We never really thought that we couldn't do it because it was working really well.
[13:54] But right at that point, we're thinking we want it to be more.
[13:58] We think we can do more.
[14:00] And we made this decision.
[14:01] We've been to a REM and we've got our SMSF sorted out.
[14:05] We've got an investment property in that.
[14:06] And through the REM, we got through to – it really got us thinking about what our situation genuinely was at home.
[14:13] We had a big house in a lovely spot, big yard, great view, and huge mortgage to go with it.
[14:19] And we thought, well, hang on.
[14:21] Do we really need that?
[14:23] We want to do these investment things.
[14:25] It's taken a bloody long time.
[14:26] As I said, it's taken three months and we wanted $100,000 yet.
[14:30] How can we accelerate that?
[14:31] And we thought, what if we were to downsize?
[14:33] What if we were to sell our home, find something small with no mortgage that's still really comfortable?
[14:40] What would that do to our journey?
[14:41] And we were sort of talking to our end about what that could look like.
[14:45] And there was never any...
[14:47] There was no push to do it.
[14:49] There was no enthusiasm towards it.
[14:50] It was a real, look, if that's what you guys want to do, then that's what, you know, you can go and do that.
[14:55] That's great because you need to come to that conclusion yourself.
[14:57] It's not someone else.
[14:58] At the time we were quite frustrated because we were looking for that affirmation we were going down the right track.
[15:02] In the end we did it and we sold our house and we –
[15:05] paid out the mortgage, bought a unit, a much smaller unit, which is still really lovely, paid off our mortgage.
[15:10] As soon as we did that, our RM was like, wow, now great.
[15:15] You guys are amazing.
[15:16] You've done this.
[15:16] It was like, oh, okay.
[15:17] And it gave us all this real positive support, which was really important to us at the time because when we did that, we've gone from this really quite flashed, lovely house type thing to something a lot smaller and our family and friends are going,
[15:30] It was hard to do.
[15:31] If something wrong or something happened, why would you sell that place?
[15:35] It's beautiful.
[15:37] They didn't know you had a bloody half a dollar mortgage on it.
[15:39] That's crippling.
[15:40] Yeah.
[15:42] So I think the RM is essential.
[15:43] The RM was that real support piece, that real, yes, you do a right thing, where a lot of our family and friends, we...
[15:49] didn't choose to tell them about that sort of stuff.
[15:52] So we really appreciate that support then and that snowballed into right.
[15:56] Now let's get your strategy manager involved.
[16:00] Let's do this, this, this.
[16:01] Let's get into the wealth creation side of this.
[16:03] There's this real snowball effect from there and everything.
[16:05] But the RM is the you've got to get in there and build that relationship with them.
[16:10] Annoy them a little bit.
[16:10] Ask questions.
[16:11] You know, no question is a stupid question.
[16:14] Ask lots of questions.
[16:15] Get to know them, you know, because they're a human as well at the other end of it, remember?
[16:19] You know, they're people.
[16:20] And, you know, it's that whole working together type thing to get somewhere.
[16:23] Yeah.
[16:24] Because they're the ones that you can ask those questions to.
[16:26] Yeah.
[16:27] And you're noticing on some of the posts people put in and they ask questions, you think, just ask your RM.
[16:32] Yeah.
[16:32] You need to work on that relationship a bit more because you should be asking them that.
[16:36] They know it and they'll give you advice and they're not going to get you to do something silly.
[16:40] They're not going to push you to do something until you're ready.
[16:42] Yeah.
[16:42] And you get the option to still make your own decisions.
[16:44] Yeah.
[16:45] Yeah, and that's what we're here for.
[16:46] The support is there.
[16:47] Ask us all the questions in the world.
[16:48] Yeah.
[16:49] Yeah.
[16:49] No, and like I say, we can't believe what you get for how much money and, you know, the effort we put in.
[16:57] Yeah.
[16:57] We get 50 times back in return.
[16:59] It's quite incredible.
[17:00] Yeah.
[17:01] Yeah.
[17:01] That's a stellar job.
[17:02] Yeah.
[17:03] Now.
[17:03] Coming around to our... Oh, sorry.
[17:08] After you.
[17:11] What would you say to somebody who's on the fence about joining Infinity?
[17:17] Well, I think if you're on the fence, if you've taken the time to do the initial, what's it called?
[17:29] Webinar.
[17:30] The webinar.
[17:30] You've taken the time to do the initial webinar and you're understanding a bit about it and thinking, do I commit the money or not?
[17:37] To us, that was a hell of a lot of money at the time.
[17:39] We were really worried about spending it.
[17:41] But once you spent it, it was an absolute bargain before you got out of it because there's so much education, so much knowledge you gain from that.
[17:48] But if you're not ready to commit to following the process and really trusting it, then don't do it.
[17:54] Yep.
[17:54] Because if you're going to do it, go balls in and do it properly because it will work for you.
[18:00] Yeah, it's amazing.
[18:00] The whole thing is incredible.
[18:01] But you've got to commit to it, yeah.
[18:03] And it seems like a lot of money at the time and that's really scary.
[18:06] We found it really scary because we didn't feel like it.
[18:08] That's really not that much.
[18:09] We make it sound like it's a fortune.
[18:10] It's not.
[18:11] Not a lot of money.
[18:12] And also for what you get is incredible.
[18:14] Yep.
[18:15] But also I think you've got to commit and you've got to put the effort in.
[18:17] But if you're going to spend that money as well, you've spent the money, it's your life, you've got to do something about it.
[18:23] You've got to follow.
[18:24] If you can follow that advice, you'll do amazing things and you'll make so much more money than what you've just spent.
[18:32] And you get a whole new family of support and all that sort of stuff as well.
[18:35] We can give you all the tools and the resources, but it's up to you whether if you want to action it or not and take advantage of everything.
[18:43] The FFF just sounds silly.
[18:45] It's not that hard.
[18:46] It sounds scary.
[18:47] I think, oh, God, that's not very much money to live on.
[18:49] It's plenty of money to live on.
[18:50] And if it means in your head and in reality there's plenty of money for whatever else might happen in life, it's easy.
[18:57] Beautiful.
[18:58] Beautiful.
[18:59] Guys, thank you so much for coming in and sharing your story.
[19:01] Thank you.
[19:02] Thank you for your work as well.
[19:03] Thank you very much.
[19:04] That's what I'm here for.
[19:07] I can't wait to see what we're going to do together in the next 12 months.
[19:10] Yeah, that's true.
[19:12] And that's pretty exciting.
[19:12] Once we recover from what we've done in the last 12 months and then we'll hit the road again and get into it.
[19:17] Oh, yeah.
[19:18] Let's do it.
[19:18] It's going to be great.
[19:19] Thank you.
[19:19] All right, guys.
[19:20] I'll see you next time.
[19:20] Cheers.
