Hamish & Andy explain how Mike Munro from ‘This is Your Life’ ended up in Hamish’s living room waiting for a couch delivery. They then take us back to the day after the 2007 ARIAS where they spoke to Missy Higgins and John Butler, who used language that made Hamish and Andy fear for their jobs. The boys also discuss how recording segments for the Caravan of Courage would sometimes mean making something out of nothing, including a segment about ‘a big tree’. Hamish & Andy's Remembering Project. Season 1, Episode 9.

## Transcript

[0:02] A listener production.
[0:06] Wilhelm, this is our remembering project.
[0:08] Yep, where a random day of the year is selected and we look up the run sheets from all our shows from across the years to find any we did on that day.
[0:17] Over 20 years, that's about 2,500 shows and roughly 26,000 talk breaks.
[0:22] Today, we pick one.
[0:24] One talk break only and try to remember what happened based on what was written down on the run sheet from that day.
[0:29] As always, we've got podcast Mike with us here for any technical stuff.
[0:32] Hello.
[0:32] Mike, what date was randomly chosen today?
[0:35] It's the 29th of October.
[0:37] Okay, that's Andy's go then.
[0:38] Let's kick it off and find out what years Andy will take us back to and we'll see if we remember anything from those years.
[0:46] This is Hamish and Andy's Remembering Project.
[0:53] Aim, I mean, I really wanted to take us just back to 2014 and listen to the whole thing.
[1:00] The whole show?
[1:00] No, just this one break.
[1:01] Okay, right.
[1:02] But I know it's just mainly for our amusement because it was one of our favourite segments that I'd forgotten about.
[1:08] What are we talking?
[1:09] Winds of Glory.
[1:10] Oh, yeah, Winds of Glory.
[1:12] Not enough times.
[1:13] We didn't do Winds of Glory enough times.
[1:15] I think we let the PC police get the better of us there.
[1:19] Because Winds of Glory was stories of people going and farting in famous places.
[1:25] I think we had someone fart on the couch from Friends.
[1:28] Exactly.
[1:29] The pyramids.
[1:30] And this one particularly, there was an honourable waft from...
[1:35] An honourable waft from Oshana who was climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.
[1:40] This is how detailed the notes were.
[1:43] And wanted to do one in the summit, so held one for six hours.
[1:46] Wow.
[1:47] A high altitude wind of glory.
[1:49] Yeah.
[1:49] But only to be beaten.
[1:53] By a rival farting team.
[1:54] By a person who did one in the actual DeLorean at 16 years of age.
[2:00] Yeah, wow.
[2:01] At Universal Studios when him and his mate were pulled from the soundstage and allowed to get into the DeLorean.
[2:09] And let one rip in there.
[2:10] Send it all the way back to Ultimate Nightmare Fires.
[2:13] So, I mean, tremendous winds of glory.
[2:15] Wasn't it great?
[2:16] I'm sure.
[2:17] Someone standing on the top of the world just letting it rip.
[2:20] We should...
[2:21] We should bring that back for the podcast.
[2:22] I wouldn't mind bringing Windsor Glory back.
[2:24] It's not where I want to go.
[2:27] In 2008, we're on the Caravan of Courage.
[2:30] Yep.
[2:31] This is our trip in our caravan.
[2:34] This one would have been from Melbourne to Darwin and broadcasting forever we stopped.
[2:38] We stopped in a place called Hawker.
[2:40] Do you remember anything about Hawker?
[2:42] Hawker.
[2:45] Yeah, I don't think I do.
[2:47] Was it South Australia, Hawker?
[2:49] I didn't remember anything either.
[2:51] And on the run sheet it says, Hamish and Andy saw a big tree.
[2:57] There were definitely days.
[2:59] There were thinner days.
[3:01] Jeez, it was thin out there sometimes, Mike.
[3:02] And it shouldn't surprise us because we were travelling through one of the most sparsely populated areas on earth.
[3:09] Yes.
[3:10] Up the middle of Australia where it's literally one road and no people.
[3:13] So seeing a big tree, I guess, was noteworthy, but I don't know if…
[3:17] You could argue to a network of, I don't know, at that stage, you know, 50 stations Australia-wide that you should all be syndicating this show that's reporting in live from a big tree.
[3:26] Yeah.
[3:28] So for people, some people do go back and listen to old shows.
[3:32] Skip 29th of October, I think, on the Caravan of Courage of 2008.
[3:35] There were a couple of those Caravan of Courage shows where you just get into the, you know, the whole idea was we stop at a caravan park and we just do the show about what we've seen that day.
[3:44] And let's be honest, sometimes, you know, you're in a sleepy town, nothing's going on, occasionally like a road train would rumble past on the highway nearby and you could just see kind of like a rusty old swing set like just back and forth in the breeze and you'd look around and go, I don't know if there's two hours of content here.
[4:06] That's why 2007, the 29th of October is where I want to land.
[4:11] Rare to get a bit of audio from 2007.
[4:13] Because we know usually it has to have been good enough to make that weekend's highlight show.
[4:18] There are two bits of audio.
[4:20] I haven't listened to either of them.
[4:21] Great.
[4:22] It is the day after the Arias.
[4:25] The Arias.
[4:26] Now, we didn't host that year.
[4:28] I looked that up.
[4:29] We hosted the year after.
[4:30] We would have been up there.
[4:31] We would have had a little presentation that year.
[4:34] Uncemented.
[4:37] Yes, we hadn't yet cemented ourselves in the industry.
[4:40] We were told that after we...
[4:42] After we hosted the Arias.
[4:44] Who cares about who hosts the Arias?
[4:46] But after we hosted, you know, we were shitting ourselves and we'd like got through it all.
[4:50] We came up and someone went, well done, you've cemented yourselves now.
[4:53] We're like, oh, good, good.
[4:54] It feels good.
[4:55] That's good.
[4:57] But it never really gets bought up by anyone going, well, we're a bit nervous about you guys, but of course we all saw the 2008 Arias and you are cemented in the industry.
[5:09] From my memory, I...
[5:11] We did the Arias and then we flew back during the day to Melbourne to do the show in the afternoon.
[5:20] That would be right.
[5:21] The Arias were a Sunday night.
[5:22] The Arias were a Sunday night.
[5:24] The Arias were pretty big back then.
[5:25] There was a peak period of like 2006, 7, 8, 9, 10, that five-year period where… They were big.
[5:33] There was like 50,000 people in the crowd and like, you know, big acts would play at the Arias.
[5:37] Yeah, yeah.
[5:38] And it was prime time.
[5:40] And so you could do a whole show, radio show dedicated to the RAs the next day, which is the Australian Music Awards for people listening to.
[5:47] People did do whole shows dedicated to it.
[5:49] And I think Missy Higgins had an awesome year that year.
[5:53] Yeah.
[5:54] Because that's what I kind of got this advice.
[5:56] And that's the bit I want to listen to now.
[5:57] I got this vague memory of Missy being up and about and being quite arrogant.
[6:04] Missy being arrogant.
[6:05] Yeah, I don't know whether I was.
[6:07] On our show?
[6:08] On our show after she, not like arrogant in a joking way.
[6:12] Yeah, yeah, no, no, no.
[6:14] But we did have Missy, we had a bit to do with Missy too because remember she played live at my house.
[6:19] That's right.
[6:19] We did a whole show from my house one time, Mike, because I was waiting for a catch to be delivered.
[6:25] And they went, we're going to deliver it between three and seven.
[6:28] And I was like, oh, well, can we, all right, we'll do the show from my house.
[6:31] Yes.
[6:31] And they, big radio moment.
[6:34] Do you think singing big trees is exciting?
[6:35] Yeah, yeah.
[6:36] Wait until we heard that knock at the door and the couch guys were there.
[6:39] Who else came?
[6:39] And Missy played in my kitchen.
[6:42] Also, yeah, Missy played in your kitchen, which is amazing.
[6:44] I think Moosey, your grandma was there.
[6:46] My grandma was there helping people snacks.
[6:47] But I think it was, who did, This Is Your Life, who was the host of that?
[6:52] Mike Munro.
[6:52] I think Mike Munro came.
[6:53] Yeah.
[6:55] if Mike Munro came to your house for some reason.
[6:58] So odd to have those people in your life.
[7:00] Because at that stage it was a share house and some weird stuff happened in that share house.
[7:04] So then to have like Mike Munro in you on like a Thursday.
[7:08] Why couldn't one of the other housemates get the couch?
[7:11] That's a good point.
[7:13] Very good point.
[7:14] Although I would say they're not reliable.
[7:17] I would say at that stage I was the most chance.
[7:20] Even though I had a full-time job, I was the most chance to be home of anyone.
[7:23] So I want to just play a little bit of Missy Higgins.
[7:26] I just asked Marshy, our production guy here, so just grab Missy because I think she's had a big win.
[7:31] Let's just get engaged with Missy, but it's not the most memorable person of that show.
[7:36] Okay.
[7:36] And we'll get to that after this.
[7:39] The 29th of October, 2007.
[7:44] Is that Missy?
[7:45] It is.
[7:46] It's Hamish and Andy.
[7:47] How are you going?
[7:49] Hi.
[7:49] Hey.
[7:50] Sorry to bother you later.
[7:51] I'm in probably a fairly dusty state after celebrations last night.
[7:56] Oh, yeah.
[7:57] I'm not too bad.
[7:58] I went home at about 2.30ish.
[8:01] That's not too bad.
[8:02] I think it got really messy after I left, apparently.
[8:05] At one point, we were all looking for your phone.
[8:08] I know.
[8:08] The mere fact that you've picked up, does that mean you've found your phone?
[8:12] No, this is actually my sister's phone.
[8:15] Oh, this is just fine.
[8:16] But I just bought a new one then.
[8:18] But I guess if anyone out there found a black Motorola last night... Why not, Missy?
[8:27] Why not use the Rhino show as a lost and found?
[8:30] Semi-naked photos of me in the pictures folder.
[8:33] Okay.
[8:33] Please return it.
[8:34] Yes.
[8:35] Missy, you've just lowered the likelihood of it being returned by about 1,050%.
[8:38] No, no, no.
[8:39] Please return it to HamishAndAndy.com.
[8:42] Well, Missy, you would know a lot of people and stuff in the music industry and a lot of those that maybe value their privacy.
[8:49] Is there someone's phone number on there you know will be really annoyed if it gets out?
[8:54] Oh, God.
[8:55] Yeah, there's quite a few that I think would probably be really annoyed.
[8:59] Vanilla Ice and stuff like that.
[9:01] Yeah, Johnny Farms.
[9:03] David Hasselhoff, I'm guessing.
[9:05] Well, Missy, you are the best female artist, of course, the album On A Clear Night.
[9:11] Did you feel like the best?
[9:12] Did you go around to other people just saying a little bit of I'm the best after you get this award?
[9:17] I mean, you carried best female for a whole year.
[9:21] Yeah, I went out to a lot of people and I said, just in case you forgot, I have been away for the past two years, but I'm still the best.
[9:33] Okay, so I tipped her in it.
[9:34] I didn't remember that.
[9:36] You just remember the grab of her saying I'm the best.
[9:39] The Motorola dance, it doesn't it?
[9:41] The Motorola.
[9:42] And I do remember us all looking.
[9:43] You and I had a few and we were all looking for her phone at the after party at one point and then that was kind of cue for us to get out of there as well.
[9:52] Quite late.
[9:53] Did phones used to have locks on them?
[9:54] Because…
[9:55] When you like open up a flip phone or were you just automatically into someone's phone?
[9:59] I don't remember having a pin on my old phone.
[10:02] Neither do I. I mean, Mike, you're too young to even contemplate this.
[10:06] Yeah, Motorola was quite a famous company.
[10:07] They make walkie-talkies now.
[10:09] I was more a Sony Ericsson kind of guy.
[10:11] Yeah, we went through that.
[10:12] How do you feel, bud?
[10:15] Okay, moving away from Best Female Artist, there was someone else on that show.
[10:19] That we had as a guest.
[10:21] That we had as a guest.
[10:22] Yes.
[10:23] that I think almost put a black mark through this person's name to ever be on again because of how it went down.
[10:31] Oh, was it John Butler?
[10:33] You're right.
[10:34] Because I remember John Butler having a curious black mark against his name.
[10:37] So John Butler came on a family-friendly show and had probably kept the celebrating going and just couldn't quite, for my memory, couldn't quite get in his mind that this was broadcasting live.
[10:51] And I loved John Butler.
[10:52] I loved John Butler.
[10:53] He's a legend.
[10:53] But I also remember Sam being really disappointed that he swore.
[10:59] He definitely swore.
[11:00] Did he swear?
[11:00] Yeah.
[11:00] So Sam and Sam with the family family, you get a black mark straight away no matter… And so this is us with… Should we take a break first?
[11:10] Oh, yeah.
[11:10] Good call.
[11:10] Before we get to the bad stuff, here's the good stuff.
[11:14] We're ready.
[11:15] Let's hear John Butler.
[11:17] Having said that, I remember he…
[11:20] He came good.
[11:21] Didn't we have him back on years and years later?
[11:23] Yeah, we would have.
[11:24] Yeah.
[11:24] Yeah.
[11:24] I mean, it wasn't banned or anything.
[11:26] No, no, no.
[11:26] It was more just you got a black man.
[11:28] Like, it was – I certainly remember – All right, yeah.
[11:31] It was just a misstep.
[11:32] Let's hear the misstep.
[11:32] The 29th of October, 2007.
[11:39] Hey Mr. Danny for The Drive Home.
[11:40] That was Funky Tonight performed by the John Butler Trier with the help of Keith Urban.
[11:45] Definitely the highlight of the night last night, and our musically.
[11:49] Oh, absolutely.
[11:50] And joining us on the line, Mr. John Butler himself.
[11:53] How are you feeling today, John?
[11:54] I'm feeling dapper.
[11:56] You're feeling dapper?
[11:57] That's good.
[11:58] A lot of the other people we've talked to are pulling up a little bit rusty after last night.
[12:01] Did you take it easy afterwards?
[12:03] No, I went out to a party and caught up with some friends, and you know...
[12:06] How do you...
[12:07] There's so many parties, John.
[12:09] I mean, how do you choose?
[12:11] There's parties for every label, it seems, and then there's parties for kind of different labels within those labels.
[12:16] Does someone choose for you?
[12:18] No, we just gatecrashed the good one.
[12:20] We just go, okay, what was the good one last year?
[12:22] Cool, let's go to that one, because that other one really sucked.
[12:24] Because Andy and I often find ourselves at the party that's just being held at, like, the kiosk out at the Olympic Stadium going, I don't think we're at the cool one.
[12:33] Yeah, yeah, the one at Homebush is...
[12:36] It's a bad one.
[12:37] I've learned that through a few years of being stuck at the kiosk.
[12:41] We're still learning.
[12:42] And then I'm like, fuck, this is not the best one to be.
[12:44] Oops, that was a swear word.
[12:46] Family show, John, family show.
[12:49] Mate, we'll press on.
[12:50] It was amazing.
[12:51] I mean, Keith Irvin was full of funk, like you were just saying there.
[12:55] You certainly don't want to get a funk while at the band party.
[12:58] Yes.
[12:58] Were you surprised?
[12:59] I mean, have you played with Keith before, John?
[13:02] Oh, just a couple days before that.
[13:03] Not really.
[13:04] No.
[13:05] No, it just, it kind of just came together.
[13:07] Well, how much did you rehearse for the... We rehearse for about a couple, maybe an hour.
[13:11] Wow.
[13:12] Because it really does sound like, you know, he's wailing away pretty hard.
[13:17] He's a great player.
[13:18] I mean, you know, he's a great musician and a lovely guy.
[13:20] And, you know, he can come and sit in with pretty much whoever most probably.
[13:25] it didn't take like we didn't teach him how to play the guitar.
[13:28] Yes.
[13:29] He kind of knew that way.
[13:30] Were you surprised with how much he was wailing though?
[13:34] I mean, the whole crowd was.
[13:36] There were certainly high eyebrows at our table hand watching him go at it like a bullet a gate.
[13:42] Yeah, you know, he hopping in bed with the JVT, you know, it's not going to be...
[13:45] We're not going to be just, you know, keeping it safe.
[13:49] You know?
[13:49] We're going to be hitting the fucking red.
[13:51] I just said it again, didn't I?
[13:52] You've done it again, John.
[13:53] You've done it again.
[13:54] Oh, I just said it again.
[13:57] It's definitely, it definitely remains a family show for the first two mornings.
[14:01] I don't know if there's a three strikes and you're out policy.
[14:05] But look, John, do you know if Keith, and you know, please, using PG-rated language, can you tell us, was Keith nervous about last night?
[14:16] Because it was the first time that he had stepped out with Nicole on his arm.
[14:19] I didn't talk to him about that.
[14:21] I don't know, man.
[14:22] You're going to have to ask Keith, man.
[14:23] He was fairly relaxed.
[14:24] And what about for you, John?
[14:26] I mean, a night away from the kids, I'd imagine.
[14:28] Who was taking kids?
[14:28] Because you were there with your wife, rocking out pretty hard.
[14:31] Oh, wait, wait, wait.
[14:31] I got to go.
[14:32] I've forgotten all of them.
[14:33] What?
[14:34] Shit.
[14:35] I don't know.
[14:36] I think we just left the room.
[14:38] Really?
[14:38] You have to go... Oh, my God.
[14:39] What has happened to our kids?
[14:43] Oh, no.
[14:45] Oh, no.
[14:46] I think maybe one of the maids, maybe the room cleaners.
[14:51] John, fantastic work last night.
[14:53] You picked up two Arias.
[14:54] You've picked up the award for salty pirate language on today's show.
[14:59] Somebody's got to do it.
[15:01] Everybody else is too out of it to swear.
[15:03] Absolutely, mate.
[15:04] The album's grand national.
[15:06] Thanks for joining us this afternoon.
[15:07] Thank you, guys.
[15:08] See you, mate.
[15:08] What do you expect?
[15:09] See you, mate.
[15:09] You're a hamish and handy.
[15:11] It wasn't that bad.
[15:12] It wasn't bad at all.
[15:13] I reckon the feeling… I think we were just young and panicking that someone was swearing on our show.
[15:19] And we couldn't cut him off.
[15:20] Couldn't because there was no dumb.
[15:21] You can't cut off John Butler.
[15:22] Because I remember… All you can do is say, please stop swearing because we're the ones that will get in trouble.
[15:27] That's really curious because, yeah, I certainly remember it being worse.
[15:31] But you listen back to it and go, what is the big deal about that?
[15:34] I remember looking through and, you know, Sam being really worried after the first F-bomb.
[15:40] And I think when it came, we were like, okay, we'll keep going.
[15:42] No, it was.
[15:42] Because when you start out of radio, you get this drilled into you and like technically...
[15:46] They're like, oh, you know, we could lose our broadcasting licence.
[15:49] They're like, well, you don't want to be the one that's responsible for the whole company going under.
[15:52] Yeah.
[15:53] I think that's it.
[15:54] But now with a bit of age, you look back and you go... John's just having fun, being quite nice.
[15:59] I don't think, like, the whole of the network was going to have its broadcasting licence stripped off it because John Butler said the F word after the Arias and then made a joke about leaving his kids in a hotel room that we just completely missed because we were panicking about swear words.
[16:14] That's a quick one.
[16:15] Oh, there we revisit that, Ando.
[16:17] Good.
