Hamish & Andy relive two stitch ups they are not proud of. A time they forced Dean Geyer to perform with his shirt off to a bunch of adoring fans, and a questionable way to test Anthony Callea’s height. The boys then replay a moment when they invited Margot Robbie to the Logies Spit Roast Party, but spend the entire conversation talking about Gravox. Hamish & Andy's Remembering Project. Season 1, Episode 17.

## Transcript

[0:02] A listener production.
[0:06] Wilhelm, this is our remembering project.
[0:08] Yep, where a random day of the year is selected and we look up the run sheets from all our shows from across the years to find any we did on that day.
[0:17] Over 20 years, that's about 2,500 shows and roughly 26,000 talk breaks.
[0:22] Today, we pick one.
[0:24] One talk break only and try to remember what happened based on what was written down on the run sheet from that day.
[0:29] As always, we've got podcast Mike with us here for any technical stuff.
[0:32] Hello.
[0:32] Mike, what date was randomly chosen today?
[0:35] It's the 28th of April.
[0:37] Okay then, it's Hamish go.
[0:39] Let's kick this off and find out what years Hamish will take us back to and see if we remember anything from those years.
[0:47] This is Hamish and Andy's Remembering Project.
[0:54] All right, 28th of April, Ando.
[0:56] Some interesting stuff happened over the years.
[0:59] In 2009, I mean, this is one of the ones where you look back, because you know how some things start?
[1:03] We've done a few on this podcast where, like, you go, oh, that was the beginning and it grew into something big.
[1:09] 2009, we thought my dad might have swine flu.
[1:12] Did we?
[1:13] But he didn't.
[1:14] So, you know, I look back and I go, well, if he did that day, that would obviously be the day that changed the course of history for me.
[1:22] But he didn't.
[1:23] But he didn't.
[1:24] I think he's just feeling a bit under the weather.
[1:26] Swine flu.
[1:27] Swine flu's popped up once or twice.
[1:28] I've seen that in the run sheets.
[1:30] Yeah.
[1:30] Really?
[1:30] I mean, bigger than... Because I don't really remember it being a thing in Australia, but I guess it was in the news.
[1:35] We were scared of it.
[1:36] I mean, as far as... Not COVID's good.
[1:38] No, but as far as pandemics, swine flu, SARS, bird flu, COVID.
[1:43] In my memory of the four we had...
[1:45] But only COVID was a pandemic.
[1:47] I mean, the others were...
[1:48] Sorry, yes.
[1:48] The others were...
[1:50] Cautious flare-ups.
[1:52] And Ebola was a big one that was… Yeah, true.
[1:55] But, I mean, not for us.
[1:56] Yeah.
[1:57] So it was more in the category of, like, making jokes about bacon and… Yeah.
[2:02] Ah, those were the days.
[2:04] Comedy was really, really comedy was the most affected industry by swine flu.
[2:08] Yes.
[2:08] As opposed to all the other industries.
[2:09] Now, in 2008, gee, we focused on So You Think You Can Dance a fair bit on the show.
[2:16] That seems to have been a much bigger show than I remember.
[2:18] Yeah.
[2:19] To the point where in the run sheets... Yeah.
[2:21] It's like abbreviated.
[2:23] It's like the… So you think you can dance.
[2:27] Yeah.
[2:27] It took me a while.
[2:28] S-Y-T-Y-C-D or whatever.
[2:30] It took me a while to go, what does that mean?
[2:32] I wouldn't have known what that meant.
[2:33] What is that?
[2:34] What's the word I'm looking for here, Mike?
[2:36] Acronym.
[2:37] Yeah, it's acronymized.
[2:38] What did you say?
[2:38] Anagram.
[2:39] Yeah, I was looking… You're not looking for that, Mike.
[2:41] Get out.
[2:42] No, please stay.
[2:43] We don't know how to work the road caster.
[2:45] Yeah, the acronym.
[2:46] Like, we're using the acronym all the time for So You Think and Dance.
[2:48] Who were the judges?
[2:51] Like, this is a – I mean, Mike, you're good at remembering this kind of stuff.
[2:54] Jason Coleman.
[2:54] Jason Coleman we know.
[2:56] Natalie Bassingsway.
[2:57] Nat Bass was the host.
[2:58] Oh, was she the host?
[2:59] Yeah.
[3:00] Get your facts straight, mate.
[3:01] Sorry, guys.
[3:02] Yeah, I think Nat Bass the host.
[3:03] Coleman?
[3:04] I reckon – and it was the first set that was multi-leveled because you remember –
[3:09] Do you remember that, Mike?
[3:10] Yeah, I do.
[3:11] Like above the dance floor, there would be like a group of people hanging out and occasionally Nat would host from amongst them.
[3:17] Yes.
[3:18] Often wearing like a sparkly dress.
[3:20] Kind of like the current Dance with the Stars where all the dancers are upstairs.
[3:23] Yeah, you just never knew.
[3:24] I reckon they were the first reality show to bring in levels.
[3:26] MasterChef used levels very, very well.
[3:28] Yes.
[3:30] If you're a contestant, you have to be upstairs.
[3:32] Yep.
[3:32] You have to be looking down.
[3:34] But I think So You Think You Can Dance was the first show to bring in.
[3:36] Yep.
[3:37] Hey, you never know where we're going to put the host.
[3:38] Yes.
[3:38] So she's up here, she's down here, she's out the back.
[3:40] Yes, that's very true.
[3:42] It was a real, it's like a three-card Monty.
[3:44] Follow the queen, follow the queen, not the jack, follow the queen.
[3:46] Where is she?
[3:47] She's out the back.
[3:49] Mike, tell us, who were they?
[3:50] Well, I'm looking at the Wikipedia page and it says the show was hosted by Carrie Bickmore with Paula Abdul, Shannon Holtz-Sepefel and Jason Gilkisson.
[4:01] But was there another edition of it later?
[4:04] Yeah, I'm talking, this is 2008.
[4:06] Is that the name?
[4:07] Maybe Cario.
[4:08] Did Cario say anything?
[4:09] Yeah, that rings a bell, Cario.
[4:11] It does ring a very faint bell.
[4:12] No, you're thinking of a different show.
[4:14] That's called.
[4:15] No, it's So You Think You Can Dance Australia.
[4:17] But, okay, I'm looking at season one now.
[4:19] Nat Bass was the host.
[4:20] Jason Coleman, Matt Lee, and Bonnie Lithgow.
[4:23] Bonnie Lithgow.
[4:24] She was from the UK.
[4:25] She was sort of a famous ballroom doyen.
[4:28] The thing that I had written down, we had Dean Geyer on for So You Think You Can Dance?
[4:34] No.
[4:34] No, Australian Idol, if anything.
[4:36] Well, maybe that's a misprint on the running sheet.
[4:39] That could happen.
[4:40] But this wasn't the moment we had him on, but it reminded me of the famous Dean Geyer moment.
[4:45] Yeah.
[4:45] I'm not proud of what I did.
[4:47] Well, Dean Geyer, Mike, does he mean anything to you?
[4:52] Yeah, I know who Dean Geyer is.
[4:53] Yeah, heartthrob, early Australian Idol.
[4:55] Yeah.
[4:56] Went on to be in Glee.
[4:56] Yeah.
[4:57] Yeah.
[4:58] Had the package, you know.
[4:59] It was a triple threat.
[5:00] It was beautiful, good actor, good singer.
[5:03] And I think early on he decided I'm going to be… You'd give him a half scholarship for music.
[5:07] You'd give him at least, yeah.
[5:09] Yeah.
[5:09] A quarter to a half.
[5:10] You'd give him a half for everything.
[5:11] So you'd give him half for your looks.
[5:13] Yeah.
[5:13] I don't know if they give him modelling scholarships to high school.
[5:16] Half for your looks, half for your acting, half for your singing.
[5:18] Yeah.
[5:18] Hey, that's 150%.
[5:19] Yeah, that's right.
[5:20] We're going to pay you.
[5:20] We're going to pay your parents four and a half grand a year to send you to our school.
[5:24] So, Mike, because you got half scholarship for singing.
[5:28] Yes.
[5:28] What portion of that was for looks, do you think?
[5:31] I'd say maybe 10%.
[5:33] Sure.
[5:33] So 5% over all of your fees were paid for by your looking.
[5:38] Dean, he was like a real heartthrob at the time.
[5:41] And he had a lot of fans.
[5:42] He was sort of, you know, he was Australia's version of One Direction a little bit.
[5:46] Like his fans were obsessed with him.
[5:48] And then there was some thing that we were like, oh, look, you can play if you do it topless and some of your fans can come in.
[5:56] Sam's come in and said, hey… That's our producer, by the way, yeah.
[5:58] Sony has asked Dean Guy to come on to perform live.
[6:02] And we're like, oh, not sure if it's quite right for our show, for where we want to be.
[6:07] And Sam's then going, hey, well, we've since gone back.
[6:10] They've come back and Dennis would like us a favour and we want to keep Dennis happy.
[6:14] He's a good friend of our show and has been for years anyway.
[6:17] But he was such a great supporter.
[6:18] We're like, oh, we've got to keep him happy as well because he's a good pal.
[6:22] But…
[6:23] how do we make this work for our show?
[6:25] And we thought, well, he's a heartthrob.
[6:28] If he plays topless and we give away the chance to see him playing topless.
[6:34] Yeah, we exploited him.
[6:35] We exploited him.
[6:36] We exploited him as our candy.
[6:38] Let's give that opportunity.
[6:40] So people were ringing up, very excited.
[6:41] Very excited fans.
[6:42] Oh, my God, I'm going to see him play topless.
[6:44] Kind of like the naked cowboy in Times Square.
[6:46] That was sort of what we were thinking.
[6:48] And probably he's not very respectful of Dean's talents as a musician.
[6:54] But you remember we were young and this was like, you know, often you'll notice in these older shows you go to the very base level first idea.
[7:00] Yes.
[7:01] And then the next day he comes in.
[7:02] Well, he came in.
[7:03] We had the crowd there and they were sort of sectioned off because he said, look for your safety.
[7:06] They're behind this tape and they can't touch you and they won't be able to get near you.
[7:10] This is the first time he's heard that he has to be toppled.
[7:12] Yeah, we thought he'd been briefed and he was like, nah, nah, nah.
[7:17] And we were kind of live.
[7:18] Like he'd arrived.
[7:19] Yeah, it was in the song before it was good to go.
[7:21] We were like, look, this has been promised, Dean.
[7:24] Yeah.
[7:24] Look at these hungry wolves.
[7:26] They've been promised a feast of Dean for their eyes.
[7:28] And then, I mean, I hope I'm wrong.
[7:31] If my memory serves me correctly, I was not particularly nice.
[7:36] And I said, when we came back for the break live on radio, you're not allowed to play until you take your top off.
[7:41] Yeah.
[7:42] Get your effing top off, you hack piece of S. I think Andy screamed at him.
[7:47] I didn't say that.
[7:47] Sort of that first moment we saw who the real Andy was.
[7:52] But in looking back, it's like that's a pretty rough position to put someone in.
[7:58] He should have been briefed.
[7:59] Yeah.
[7:59] We should never have done it in the first place.
[8:01] Having said that, he should have been approved.
[8:03] It was just a weird afternoon for everybody.
[8:05] And to his credit, he took it off and had a play.
[8:06] Took it off and he did it and we all had a bit of a laugh about it.
[8:11] It was a stitch up.
[8:12] The only other time, this is unrelated, but we had Anthony Kalea in once who was sort of famously short.
[8:19] Yeah.
[8:20] And we, again, real like base level, no real idea, but we were essentially teasing him a bit because he was short to go,
[8:28] Do you think you're tall enough to hold a Tim Tam away from a dwarf or a little person, as they prefer to be called?
[8:37] We had a guy that was a mate of ours that was on the show from time to time that did have dwarfism, Jeremy.
[8:42] Yep.
[8:42] The people's little person.
[8:44] And he said, yeah, I'll come in and Anthony Collier had to hold the Tim Tam away from Jeremy to see if Jeremy could grab it.
[8:51] And look, Anthony Collier wasn't – he's not actually even that short.
[8:55] It just became a gag like teasing Grant Denyer for being true.
[8:58] He's not that short.
[8:59] So Anthony Collier could easily hold the Tim Tam away.
[9:02] Yeah.
[9:02] And then on air we're quietly saying to him, you know, drop your arm.
[9:07] Like just miming Like come on Like you know Be a good sport Like Jeremy He's not even getting close Come on Drop your arm So Anthony Cleo's like Okay drops his arm Jeremy grabs it We're like I can't do it You're so short
[9:24] It was a stitch up, Mike.
[9:24] So again, another stitch up.
[9:25] Stitch up we're not proud of.
[9:26] Yeah.
[9:28] In 2010, you asked the question on the show, is buying a drink for someone flirting?
[9:33] Oh, right.
[9:34] And it was put out to the people.
[9:36] I reckon that probably would have been a yes.
[9:38] LAUGHTER
[9:40] I think so.
[9:41] I think so.
[9:42] Then in 2016, you were trialling a new pickup line.
[9:45] I was like, Andy's got a new pickup line.
[9:47] Do you want to use it?
[9:47] But it doesn't say what the pickup line was.
[9:49] Yes.
[9:50] So that was 2016.
[9:51] I know the one we trialled in 2011.
[9:53] 28th of April.
[9:58] But I don't know what that one would have been in 2016.
[10:01] It wasn't the maestro.
[10:02] That was my idea that I gave to you.
[10:04] Yes, that was where you go to the bar and you pretend you're playing piano.
[10:08] Yes, you do the fingering for piano, like complicated concert piano on the bar top.
[10:12] And then just get caught and ponder for a little bit.
[10:15] I'm annoyed at this bit.
[10:16] Like you're such a genius you can imagine.
[10:18] Yeah.
[10:19] Like Beethoven level playing on imaginary keys and then you figure out… Then you crack it.
[10:25] And you pull out… Ideally, you pull out a pad and pen and you pretend to write down this new piece of music.
[10:29] It did work.
[10:29] I did go and trial it for Haim and someone's… Immediately, the person goes, oh, what are you up to there?
[10:35] And then I think the kicker was you don't actually go, I was writing a piece of music.
[10:41] You've got to be playing it cool and be dismissive.
[10:43] Ah, it's just something I'm working on.
[10:45] Yeah.
[10:45] Yeah.
[10:46] That would blow your mind if you knew about it.
[10:48] Yeah.
[10:49] It did actually work.
[10:51] Don't know if it was the maestro for 2016.
[10:54] I've got something.
[10:55] The piece I found is in the same vein as I reckon the first time Taylor Swift was on the show.
[11:01] What year?
[11:02] 2009.
[11:02] Okay.
[11:04] Someone appeared on the show doing something that makes me giggle because I promise you we would not get this person back doing this thing.
[11:13] That's next.
[11:16] Ando.
[11:16] Yeah.
[11:18] 2009.
[11:18] 2009.
[11:19] Remember we had a laugh the other day about inviting Ian Dicko Dickinson to the Slogie Spitrose?
[11:25] It's just Dixon.
[11:27] Yeah, Dixon.
[11:27] I wasn't going to correct you.
[11:30] Yes.
[11:31] Yeah.
[11:31] Well, no one cares what comes after Dicko.
[11:35] Yeah, Dicko.
[11:36] Dicko.
[11:37] Sorry, Dicko.
[11:41] So we didn't play Inviting Dicko to the Logie Spit Roast movie because we just sort of, we kind of came to the conclusion, like we know what that's going to sound like.
[11:52] Will you come?
[11:52] Yes, I'll come.
[11:54] I am going to play a Logie Spit Roast invitation.
[11:56] Right.
[11:57] Because the person that we invited in 2009 was Academy Award nominated actress Margot Robbie.
[12:05] Wow.
[12:06] Wow.
[12:07] back from her Neighbours Day, and we didn't even think she was a big enough name to give her her own invite because she's being co-invited with Ryan Maloney, Toadie, from Neighbours.
[12:19] Oh, my gosh, yeah.
[12:20] Okay, prepare yourself.
[12:22] This is Margot Robbie.
[12:23] Before she starred as Tonya Harding and got nominated for an Oscar or Wolf of Wall Street or any of other amazing films.
[12:31] The 28th of April, 2009.
[12:35] Hamish and Andy for The Drive Home.
[12:38] And, uh, Ham, this Friday.
[12:40] Oh, it's massive.
[12:41] It's massive.
[12:42] Already.
[12:42] TV Week came in crying.
[12:44] TV Week's cancelled the Logies, if you've not heard.
[12:46] They've put them back on.
[12:48] They've now re-cancelled them.
[12:50] Last I heard, they were back on.
[12:51] But you can just see from their to-ing and fro-ing how scared they are of our spit roast party overshadowing them this Friday.
[12:58] And I've got good news.
[12:59] have because we've got even more stars to add to the mix.
[13:03] Oh, I don't like the way it's looking for you actual Logies.
[13:06] Yeah, exactly.
[13:07] Ryan Maloney from Neighbours Are You There?
[13:10] Hello, how are you?
[13:11] Very well, and I also think we've got Margot Robert who plays Donna Freeman from Neighbours Are You There, Margot?
[13:16] Yes, I am.
[13:17] Hey, guys.
[13:17] We thought we'd get you to... Now, you guys aren't together at the moment, are you?
[13:21] No.
[13:22] Oh, very quick to answer.
[13:24] Suspicious.
[13:25] Suspicious.
[13:26] Very suspicious.
[13:28] Super defensive.
[13:29] Now, Ryan, of course, who plays Toadie on Neighbours, we wanted to chat to you first.
[13:35] Are you aware of the strength that the Spitrose Party has backing it as far as sponsorship this year?
[13:43] No, I'm not.
[13:44] Well.
[13:44] What's the sponsorship?
[13:45] What are you going to ask?
[13:46] Well, Haim, do you want to do the honours here?
[13:49] Well, I mean, before I tell you the name, I'm going to tell you this.
[13:54] We're not joking, okay?
[13:55] Yeah, exactly.
[13:56] Because we're going to say the name of the company and you're going to go, come on, guys, don't be idiots, as if anyone could have locked down a massive corporation as big as that.
[14:04] And then you'll ask us for the real sponsor.
[14:06] So are you ready?
[14:07] Do you understand that we're not messing about here?
[14:09] Yeah, I'm slightly scared, actually.
[14:10] Okay.
[14:11] Okay.
[14:12] Guys, we've got Greyvox.
[14:14] We've got Greyvox, everybody.
[14:15] Greyvox.
[14:16] Greyvox.
[14:18] Greyvox is on board.
[14:19] This is the time where you want to have a ceremonial AK-47 just fired into the air.
[14:26] Are you okay there, Rife?
[14:28] You can post yourself.
[14:29] Oh, that's fantastic.
[14:31] I know.
[14:32] I know.
[14:32] I know.
[14:33] Most people, I mean, the Lokis, who have they got?
[14:35] TV week.
[14:37] Oh.
[14:37] Now, Margot, let's quickly talk about Neighbours at the moment.
[14:40] There seems to be a lot more scandals than previous.
[14:43] Scandal count is high.
[14:45] Are you going for a record heading into end of 09?
[14:49] Yeah, I guess we're just seeing how far we can push the boundaries.
[14:53] scandal after scandal, really, and I'm always in the middle of it, so it's kind of fun.
[14:57] It is.
[14:57] It is kind of fun.
[14:58] Do you feel like you may be, like, ready if your own personal life has a scandal in it, you'd be better equipped to deal with it?
[15:07] I probably wouldn't deal with it the way we do on the show, but...
[15:11] Which is just gauging into the distance while music comes up.
[15:13] You can't, yeah.
[15:14] Kind of.
[15:14] It doesn't end up working out like that, does it?
[15:16] You can't just wait for an ad break in real life, no.
[15:18] Well, a lot of people do method act, and that's why I brought it up.
[15:22] Is it something that you've considered, you know, getting yourself into a scandal?
[15:26] And if you have considered this, we suggest the venue being the Logie Spit Roast Party sponsored by Greyvox.
[15:33] Well, I'll keep that in mind.
[15:35] If I've got any scandals in my life, I'll make sure I bring it all to the table at Spitrose.
[15:39] Can you please bring us one scandal?
[15:41] Can you promise the listeners you bring a personal scandal on Friday?
[15:44] Oh, I will.
[15:45] A bombshell.
[15:47] Ryan, you have to bring a plate.
[15:48] Margot, you have to bring a scandal.
[15:51] Now, Ryan, with all the guests that come, Hamish and I provide rotating meat with coals under it, hot coals.
[15:59] Grey Vox are obviously providing their amazing product.
[16:02] We were wondering, would you be able to bring a side plate?
[16:05] We've asked all the celebrities to do it.
[16:07] Danny Minogue's bringing a tiramisu.
[16:10] I think Natalie Basingthwaite has bagged fairy bread.
[16:13] She's got that happening.
[16:15] What would you like to bring, Ryan?
[16:17] I want to bring cocktail frankfurt.
[16:19] Yes!
[16:21] With little toothpicks in every one.
[16:23] Well, of course that's the right thing to be told.
[16:25] Because if that's what your heart says, go with your heart.
[16:28] And Greybox goes so well with them.
[16:30] Greybox goes well with anything.
[16:31] It goes without saying.
[16:32] All right, so we've got Ryan Maloney from Neighbours bringing a cocktail of Frankforts.
[16:37] Margot, you're bringing a scandal, which is very exciting, revealed at this Loki spit roast.
[16:43] Thanks for chatting to us, guys.
[16:44] We'll see you on Friday.
[16:45] No way.
[16:46] Thanks for having us.
[16:47] Thanks, guys.
[16:49] Bit to unpack here.
[16:52] I did call him Tony.
[16:54] I called him Tony.
[16:57] I didn't even notice.
[16:59] Called him Tony.
[17:00] He didn't correct it.
[17:02] I bet it happens all the time.
[17:04] We've got Margot Robbie on the show.
[17:06] I spend more time talking about gravy.
[17:09] I mean, fast forward 11 years, Margot Robbie's like the face of Chanel, the hottest star in the world.
[17:16] aggressively telling her to be impressed about Cravox.
[17:19] Okay, guys, I guess I am.
[17:22] She's done well.
[17:23] I mean, you look at sort of the four people in that phone conversation.
[17:26] Margot's obviously like launched and shot from there.
[17:29] I think you, me, and Maloney were around about where we were.
[17:34] Gosh, that's great remembering.
[17:36] I don't really need to talk too much more about it because there's so much in there that I was like, wow.
[17:43] You see the hierarchy.
[17:45] We're leaning on Ryan.
[17:47] He got top billing.
[17:48] Of course, Ryan Maloney and Margot Robbie, who plays Donna on Neighbours.
[17:51] Had to do the name check.
[17:52] Yeah, that's always a sign that you...
[17:54] weren't confident people would know the name Margot Robbie.
[17:57] Yeah.
[17:57] And times were to change.
[17:59] But just on that quickly, Mike, I do have a history of not getting Ryan Maloney's name correct.
[18:05] I mean, I think we've discussed it a few times before on the radio show and people might have heard this story before, but I saw him for the first time in the flesh at the Grand Prix in Melbourne.
[18:14] And so, you know, you grow up watching Neighbours.
[18:15] You know who Toadie is, right?
[18:16] Yes.
[18:17] So I see him and I go, Toadie, that's your first thought.
[18:20] And he'd go, no, no, no, that's not.
[18:22] Careful.
[18:23] Careful, careful.
[18:23] Don't be true.
[18:24] Careful, that's him on Neighbours.
[18:25] That's his name on Neighbours.
[18:26] He's got a real name in real life.
[18:28] And I go, okay, what's his other name?
[18:29] What's his other name?
[18:30] What's his other name?
[18:30] I think I've got it.
[18:31] And I called him Jared.
[18:34] Because he's Jared.
[18:36] Because he's Jared Rebecki on Neighbours and Toadie's his nickname.
[18:39] Not Ryan Maloney, his human name.
[18:45] Yeah, he's my jinx.
