## Transcript

[0:02] A listener production.
[0:06] Wilhelm, this is our remembering project.
[0:08] Yep, where a random day of the year is selected and we look up the run sheets from all our shows from across the years to find any we did on that day.
[0:17] Over 20 years, that's about 2,500 shows and roughly 26,000 talk breaks.
[0:22] Today, we pick one.
[0:24] One talk break only and try to remember what happened based on what was written down on the run sheet from that day.
[0:29] As always, we've got podcast Mike with us here for any technical stuff.
[0:32] Hello.
[0:32] Mike, what date was randomly chosen today?
[0:35] It's the 11th of March.
[0:37] Okay, that's Andy's go then.
[0:38] Let's kick it off and find out what years Andy will take us back to and we'll see if we remember anything from those years.
[0:47] This is Hamish and Andy's Remembering Project.
[0:54] Ham, 11th of March, plenty of shows to choose from.
[0:57] Yeah, we would have done a lot.
[0:59] Yeah.
[0:59] I mean, going back to 2008...
[1:02] The top of the show, we tease Catherine Cedar-Jones coming on, as well as Heather Ostell
[1:11] Jeez, it would have been, what a doubleheader.
[1:14] Not too many shows you'd have Heather Ostell and Catherine Zeta-Jones on the same show.
[1:18] Did you have any idea who Heather Ostell is?
[1:21] Heather Ostell, of course, one of the big names.
[1:23] And hello to all the Heather Ostell fans out there.
[1:26] The Ostellos.
[1:27] No, I have no idea.
[1:28] I've never heard the name.
[1:29] Heather Ostell.
[1:29] We teased her for the first hour and got her on at the end of the hour.
[1:33] We should point out teasing in radio is when you're saying they're coming up.
[1:36] They're coming up.
[1:36] Not teasing her because she's irrelevant.
[1:38] No, no, no.
[1:39] Like we're doing now.
[1:41] I had to Google who is Heather Ostell.
[1:46] Singer?
[1:47] No.
[1:47] Actress?
[1:48] No.
[1:49] Just a lady that went on a holiday and her daughter went around to her house and she wasn't there and sort of put her missing and there was a manhunt and she was out.
[2:01] Oh, so she was that day's news.
[2:03] She was that day's news.
[2:04] So the name would have meant something that day.
[2:06] It meant a lot that day.
[2:07] And like, we've got Heather Ostell.
[2:08] Yeah.
[2:08] Yeah, and so when I Googled it, it came up like every news outlet had a huge story about and apparently the daughter was doing a piece of the camera if you've got any information when she came home.
[2:25] As you walk through the back door.
[2:27] What's all this?
[2:27] I've got some information.
[2:30] I'm here.
[2:33] That sounds so good.
[2:35] So I asked Marshy, who puts together the order for us, I said, is it worth chatting to Heather?
[2:39] She goes, nah, nah.
[2:40] It's all pretty much covered in the articles.
[2:41] It's all pretty much covered in the articles.
[2:43] But yes, she went on a spare of the moment trip away to the bush.
[2:49] And was reported missing.
[2:50] And was reported missing.
[2:52] Not to take anything away from Heather Estelle, but I do remember Catherine Zeta-Jones.
[2:56] More than her?
[2:57] Yes.
[2:57] She probably had more longevity in the public eye.
[3:00] Mm-hmm.
[3:01] She was great.
[3:02] She was great.
[3:02] She was one of the ones where you were like, you're like a real movie star.
[3:07] Yeah.
[3:07] Like her, like the Charlize Theron.
[3:09] Yeah.
[3:09] They were like proper movie stars.
[3:11] Proper movie star.
[3:12] Like eloquent speaker.
[3:14] Kind.
[3:14] Great accent.
[3:15] Beautiful looking.
[3:16] Was she?
[3:17] Was she?
[3:17] Of course you can, darling.
[3:18] Yes.
[3:20] So there was a moment, Mike, where Haim, I think she was doing a movie about magic.
[3:26] Yes, I'd taken some magic to do for her.
[3:28] You had taken the trick that you had did in grade six.
[3:31] That's right.
[3:32] My year six school concert.
[3:34] Yeah, and Haim really wanted to do the trick for Catherine.
[3:36] Already pretty...
[3:38] frigging tough shit.
[3:40] Yeah, yeah.
[3:40] Like, pretty cool move to pull on Catherine Zeta-Jones.
[3:43] And so Haim was getting ready for this trick and as we sat down and like we said, like this beautiful presence of Catherine Zeta-Jones and we're like, Haim, this is amazing.
[3:51] And then when you said, hey, can I do a trick?
[3:53] She said, of course you can, darling.
[3:55] No, I think it was worse than that.
[3:57] I think I did the trick and it was more embarrassing than that.
[4:02] It wasn't like, yeah, you can do the trick for me.
[4:04] It was like...
[4:04] because it's it's some there's some it goes for some time it was about one minute to get a trip and then I said something like hey if I ever make a movie like about magic you know can I send you the script or something like that and it was like of course you can like I was eight years old and I asked if I could do Play-Doh before Andreas comes over
[4:26] Haymish and I would laugh many times throughout our years if a female had no interest in us.
[4:33] Of course you can, darling.
[4:34] Of course you can, darling, was the way we do it.
[4:36] It was a great power move because it really makes you feel like you're five years old.
[4:39] It did.
[4:39] It made us both feel like, obviously, she is very much in love with Michael Douglas and married to her.
[4:45] No, there was no, I wasn't really trying to steal her, but I also wasn't looking to be regarded as a child.
[4:51] Yes, it was my dream for the day for her to see me as six years old wearing grass-stained tracksuit pants and drinking a Milo.
[5:01] For a lie down.
[5:03] 2009?
[5:05] You went home for a nap during the day.
[5:07] Did I?
[5:07] Yes.
[5:09] And you might not recall, but that was when your girlfriend at the time came home and thought you were having an affair.
[5:14] What?
[5:15] Because you were in bed and she's like, what are you doing at – we used to nap so much, you and I.
[5:20] We loved napping.
[5:21] We used to call it Take 40 Australia.
[5:23] which was the name of a radio show at the time, which was the hottest 40 songs.
[5:26] It was like on a Sunday night.
[5:27] But we would, for us it was 40 minutes.
[5:29] 40 minutes.
[5:30] We'd often go, I'm just going to go take 40 Australia up in the airlock.
[5:32] And there'd be a little nod.
[5:33] And so if Haim had to work on something or I had to work on something, you were fine for both, for the other person to go take 40 Australia up.
[5:40] I don't know why we needed to nap so much.
[5:42] We were, like, getting up very late.
[5:45] Getting up at midday.
[5:46] Still needed another nap.
[5:47] Yeah, that's why I was like, I really went home for a nap.
[5:50] You went home for a nap.
[5:51] What a pro move.
[5:52] You went home for a nap.
[5:53] But, Mike, this is the thing.
[5:54] You get ahead on your work, mate.
[5:57] You get everything ready for 4 o'clock, you can go home.
[5:59] We may have mentioned this already on the Ruin project, but I don't care because there was a new CEO, a new owner of the whole radio station, Southern Cross Australia, the Southern Cross Group, a guy called Rhys O'Halloran, I think his name was, and Hamish, they just put beanbags in outside the... Don't do that.
[6:20] Did we do that for a couple of guys that like to take 40?
[6:22] At the studios.
[6:23] And we said, hey, we both had time off.
[6:26] We were actually both going to take 40 Australia.
[6:27] We told Sam, our producer, we're going to take 40 Australia.
[6:30] We both went off for a nap on the beanbags as Rhys was getting shown around the facility.
[6:36] This is what you own now.
[6:38] I don't know who these guys are for sleep.
[6:40] These vagabonds.
[6:41] He came across their drive show.
[6:44] These guys are meant to be the best in the biz.
[6:46] Fast asleep.
[6:47] Having a nap.
[6:48] So I went, dude, that does vaguely ring a bell.
[6:51] But I went home, had a sleep.
[6:52] Yep.
[6:52] Yep.
[6:53] Because when you're living in Elwood.
[6:56] Yeah.
[6:57] Yeah.
[6:57] It would have been, and then it would have been, yeah, while you're in bed.
[7:00] While you're in bed.
[7:01] And then, yeah, and I was convinced you were having an affair.
[7:04] Awesome.
[7:04] Because it makes sense, like, because why would you go home?
[7:07] Awesome.
[7:08] You only left home three hours ago.
[7:10] Why would you go home for a nap?
[7:13] But we loved napping.
[7:14] So good.
[7:15] But I'm smiling.
[7:17] I'm, like, walking 10 feet tall here because I would have loved that, like,
[7:21] knowing you've done nothing wrong.
[7:22] Yeah.
[7:23] It'll be like, what's going on?
[7:24] What's up there?
[7:24] That feeling.
[7:25] Oh, yeah.
[7:25] You normally have done something wrong.
[7:27] Yeah, but, I mean, knowing that I'm squeaky clean on that front, that feeling of going, do I even act a bit suspicious here?
[7:35] LAUGHTER
[7:38] To build up her anger so I can enjoy the relief even more of like, well, I think you'll find I'm absolutely squeaky clean.
[7:46] What a rush.
[7:48] So that made me laugh from that show.
[7:50] I want to concentrate though on 2013.
[7:53] Okay.
[7:55] Your dad was getting angry with you for sending emojis because he thought it costs more to send emojis.
[8:04] Thought it was an MMS.
[8:08] So strict no emoji policy for Noel.
[8:11] He wouldn't strike me as an emoji guy anyway.
[8:13] Has he graduated at all?
[8:15] No, no, no.
[8:16] I thought he'd be one of the last.
[8:17] He's one of the, no, he's still old school and still signs off with Dad.
[8:22] Right.
[8:22] And I always go, don't need to say it, mate.
[8:24] Always at the top of the screen.
[8:26] Name linked to number.
[8:27] Yes.
[8:28] No need.
[8:28] Save yourself the effort because I know texting is hard for you.
[8:30] Yes.
[8:31] Yep.
[8:31] Okay.
[8:31] From Dad.
[8:32] Yeah, my dad doesn't really do the emojis.
[8:34] My mum's just discovered them and she's having a hell of a time.
[8:38] Yeah, mum is too.
[8:39] The dancing, the lady with the red dress dancing.
[8:43] Mum's using ones I didn't really know existed.
[8:45] She must be really wandering through.
[8:47] But I suppose you've got nothing to do.
[8:48] You're retired and you're just sitting at home doing not much.
[8:51] I might read the emojis.
[8:51] Yeah.
[8:54] I think so.
[8:56] Read any good books lately?
[8:57] It's sort of a book.
[8:58] I read all the emojis.
[8:59] Picture tells a thousand words.
[9:01] 2013, you and I were both nominated for the Gold Logie.
[9:05] It had just come out.
[9:06] Really?
[9:07] Yeah.
[9:08] The TV Awards in Australia.
[9:12] And it's like the Gold Logie is for the most popular person on TV for those people who don't follow it.
[9:16] Hayman just won it last year.
[9:17] It's sort of like a Nobel Prize, yeah.
[9:22] And so a lot of articles, because people obviously have nothing better to do, we're talking about how this might split the good friendship.
[9:31] Oh, yeah, great, great.
[9:32] Because it's always, I think, just to make people, you know,
[9:37] pay attention to the Logies, it's always framed as a battle.
[9:39] Yes, the battle for the gold Logies.
[9:41] It's not really a battle.
[9:43] Internally, no one's at war, but the media doesn't care.
[9:46] It is a battle.
[9:47] So you and I were both… At each other's necks.
[9:49] Yes.
[9:49] Yep.
[9:51] And both in this battle.
[9:52] Yeah.
[9:52] And it just says that we decided to solve this through song.
[9:56] Now, I don't remember the song.
[9:59] Which makes me nervous.
[10:00] Well, it obviously works because here we are.
[10:02] Our songs are very miss and miss and miss and miss and hit.
[10:05] Here we are, Ando, all these years later.
[10:08] Yes.
[10:08] The rift, if not mended, then sufficiently bandaged over and forgotten.
[10:13] Yeah, exactly.
[10:14] Still perhaps festering but not to the naked eye.
[10:17] Deeper under a carpet somewhere.
[10:20] Pushed under a rug.
[10:22] But let's see how we solved this problem through song.
[10:25] But first, tradition dictates we hear from our sponsor.
[10:28] Oh, yes.
[10:29] Let's do that.
[10:31] Great.
[10:32] Let's hear this song about us and our Logies rift.
[10:35] The 11th of March, 2013.
[10:41] We said we'd discuss this after five.
[10:43] Of course, a bit of news today with regards to the Logies.
[10:47] Gold Logie nominations for yourself.
[10:50] Congratulations on that.
[10:52] Well, thanks, mate.
[10:53] Thanks.
[10:54] And, look, congratulations to you.
[10:56] I know the normal state of affairs would be that we should be very happy for each other, but we have always said the only thing we'd ever let come between us is a dual gold nomination.
[11:07] We can't possibly be friends anymore.
[11:10] That's the sad thing, because as much as we joke, obviously the rule now is that we hate each other.
[11:16] And so...
[11:18] Look, it's an emotional time for both of us, isn't it?
[11:20] Because we have had a lot of great memories.
[11:22] And it'd be nice, I suppose, since this is the last... Now that we're really thinking about it, last couple of minutes we're ever talking to each other, it'd be nice to just sort of say goodbye through song.
[11:34] I have always been quite fond of you.
[11:39] Oh, cheers.
[11:40] And we've had many things that we've both been through.
[11:44] I felt that this would last forever.
[11:51] You, you're my little Andy Lee Nothing could ever come between you and me I thought that it would be like that forever But a Loki's nomination means that we cannot be friends A small god man means this union now must end
[12:16] Enemies for life is just one of those things.
[12:19] Amigos don't comprende.
[12:23] Amigos do non comprende.
[12:24] Friends do not understand the value of friendship when faced with treasures such as Logies.
[12:30] Goodbye, Andy.
[12:30] I wish you well.
[12:31] Thank you.
[12:34] Huge runner.
[12:35] Huge runner for amigos non comprende.
[12:41] We would have been so happy with that.
[12:45] We would have been so happy with that.
[12:47] Yeah.
[12:47] We would have been like, hang on, hang on.
[12:50] Amigos parisiempre, that's friends forever.
[12:52] Yes, amigos.
[12:54] Non comprendo.
[12:57] Well, that was – I have no idea why I sounded so different in that thing.
[13:01] Yeah, whether you were – Was I on the phone or was I already maybe on my microphone or something outside like a – because often I would need to sing –
[13:12] like be auto-tuned or T-pained or whatever.
[13:14] Like if we did duets because Andy has a better, slightly better singing voice, Mike, because I'm more of the percussion guy.
[13:20] I just wonder whether it was one of the rare ones where you were in Sydney or something at a different studio.
[13:24] We never did that.
[13:26] We never did that.
[13:27] We wouldn't have done it.
[13:28] I just reckon maybe the best I can think of is I was on a different mic for some reason or the phone for some reason.
[13:35] On that thing, like obviously nowadays people can do shows from anywhere in the world and you can connect to something.
[13:39] You and I… Never.
[13:40] Never.
[13:41] Never did it.
[13:42] There were tons of other shows.
[13:43] Plenty of radio shows successfully.
[13:45] Like they're in different states and no one knows.
[13:47] We always were worried about what it was going to do to the vibe and we never wanted to risk it.
[13:51] If one of us had to be somewhere, the other would go.
[13:54] Yeah.
[13:54] And never, ever, never questioned it.
[13:58] Which is obviously the benefit of not having families or other things in your life.
[14:01] How good are your 20s?
[14:03] You're the best.
[14:04] I mean, I would go, hey, I'm playing in a pro-am in Sydney for a golf.
[14:08] I really want to play.
[14:09] And he's like, hey, I'll just come up.
[14:10] Call a cab.
[14:11] coming in.
[14:12] That's amazing.
[14:13] Good memory.
