## Transcript

[0:02] A listener production.
[0:06] Wilhelm, this is our remembering project.
[0:08] Yep, where a random day of the year is selected and we look up the run sheets from all our shows from across the years to find any we did on that day.
[0:17] Over 20 years, that's about 2,500 shows and roughly 26,000 talk breaks.
[0:22] Today, we pick one.
[0:24] One talk break only and try to remember what happened based on what was written down on the run sheet from that day.
[0:29] As always, we've got podcast Mike with us here for any technical stuff.
[0:32] Hello.
[0:32] Mike, what date was randomly chosen today?
[0:35] It's the 10th of April.
[0:37] Okay, then.
[0:38] It's Hamish Go.
[0:39] Let's kick this off and find out what years Hamish will take us back to and see if we remember anything from those years.
[0:47] This is Hamish and Andy's Remembering Project.
[0:51] All right, Anna, some great stuff that comes up from the 10th of April over the years.
[0:58] Yeah.
[1:01] The most recent one is 2017 we did a show on the 10th of April and I love it because it contains something that I feel is like a, just a nice...
[1:12] symbolic example of how times can change and things can come full circle.
[1:17] Do you remember how our first ever guest was Saturday mornings?
[1:21] Who was our first?
[1:22] Rove McManus.
[1:22] Rove McManus.
[1:23] First ever guest, whatever year that was.
[1:26] And we were so excited to have.
[1:28] Couldn't believe it.
[1:28] An actual real-life celebrity on the show.
[1:30] Couldn't believe it.
[1:31] 2004, was it?
[1:33] You know, we grew up watching Rove and we're like, oh, my God.
[1:35] So you and I did the Almost Tuesday show.
[1:38] That's true.
[1:38] Monday nights.
[1:39] Monday nights.
[1:40] Did 12 of those.
[1:41] Yes.
[1:41] And that started in November 2003.
[1:43] Right.
[1:43] And we graduated Mike.
[1:44] And we'd have to wait for Kyle and Jackie O to finish.
[1:47] Yes.
[1:47] And they would never finish.
[1:49] They were doing the Hot 30.
[1:50] They did the Hot 30.
[1:51] And so the whole joke was it was 10 till 12, so almost Tuesday.
[1:55] Quite often.
[1:56] I did get that.
[1:57] He gets it.
[1:57] Quite often we went, well, quite often we wouldn't start until Tuesday because Kyle and Jackie O were going for so long.
[2:05] And then we did the almost midday show, 10 till 12 on a Saturday.
[2:08] So this was – Rove was our very first guest, yes, on almost midday.
[2:12] And we – yeah, we were like blown away.
[2:16] Couldn't believe it.
[2:17] The status –
[2:19] equation of us and him there was firmly entrenched.
[2:23] You know, he, successful talk show man, us, fledgling, radio, plebs.
[2:31] Hot guys.
[2:31] Oh, plebs.
[2:32] Sorry.
[2:32] Yeah.
[2:33] Hot guys came later, Cleo Bachelor, and appreciate the work you did for us there.
[2:37] But, you know, we were like, couldn't believe it.
[2:40] So fast forward to 2017, some 13 years later.
[2:43] It says here on the run sheet, and I do remember this,
[2:46] 2017, of course, you know, 10 years or so since Roe's chat show had ended.
[2:51] Yep.
[2:52] He'd done stuff in LA and stuff, but it had been quieter, quieter times.
[2:56] Now Roe is back on the show.
[2:58] Right.
[2:58] But instead of us falling down at his feet and begging for his approval in the industry, he had 30 seconds to convince Andy to watch Doctor Who.
[3:09] LAUGHTER
[3:10] Do you remember you were like not into Doctor Who, mate?
[3:14] Rove had his show and I think he still has it, The Whovians.
[3:17] So it's like a fan show after Doctor Who airs on the ABC.
[3:21] He sort of hosts it with people that love Doctor Who.
[3:24] And it just made me laugh because I was like, times change.
[3:26] The industry, the wheel turns.
[3:28] Now Andy's like, okay, you can come on the show.
[3:31] For 30 seconds.
[3:32] For 30 seconds to convince me to like something I know I'm not going to like.
[3:36] But I'm sure it would have been fun to have Rove on the show.
[3:39] He's been a good ally across the journey but it did make me laugh.
[3:43] Yeah, I agree.
[3:45] But I also think the subject matter was probably what made me more adamant about 30 seconds.
[3:51] I didn't really want to talk about Doctor Who for much longer.
[3:53] No.
[3:54] No.
[3:54] And that was, you know, knowing you as I do, I feel that he's generous from you for a – like what's your favourite thing about Doctor Who?
[4:01] I don't really – he wears a scarf, doesn't he?
[4:03] Is he?
[4:04] I've never watched Doctor Who.
[4:05] You watch Doctor Who again?
[4:06] Nah.
[4:07] I know there's something to do with the phone box and the scarf.
[4:08] I didn't think.
[4:09] He's not thinking about where's Wally.
[4:11] No, I know the two different.
[4:13] I know the difference of the two.
[4:14] I didn't think Doctor Who's most.
[4:16] Maybe it is though.
[4:17] I think he's.
[4:18] Yeah, I think Scarf's big for him.
[4:20] That's his thing.
[4:21] Sort of takes off.
[4:21] Does he laugh and whip people with it?
[4:23] So you were going to say telephone booth because then I was worried that I was thinking of Superman.
[4:26] But does he also have a telephone booth?
[4:28] Doctor Who time travels with a telephone booth, doesn't he?
[4:30] Yeah, I know.
[4:31] That much.
[4:31] That's enough.
[4:32] Right.
[4:33] And then Superman gets changed in one.
[4:34] Yes.
[4:35] Gee, in modern day where there's obviously mobile phones.
[4:38] Yeah.
[4:39] Absolutely ruined it for both franchises.
[4:40] Doctor Who and Superman in all sorts of trouble.
[4:44] Flying back to 2013, we were doing the business brunch.
[4:49] That was our…
[4:50] Very fun morning show that we did that was really just a podcast.
[4:55] Yes.
[4:55] That we were doing.
[4:56] And what was awesome about the business brunch was Peter Harvey.
[5:00] Yeah.
[5:01] The famous journalist and often political journalist with an amazing voice.
[5:07] He got to do the voice for the opener of the business brunch.
[5:12] And his daughter I think at the time said, hey, just so you know because Pete was unwell,
[5:17] He's really happy to do it, would love to do it, but he might not be around for so long.
[5:22] And so we had that small discussion.
[5:23] We're like, well, we think if you guys are comfortable with it, they said it'd be great.
[5:27] We said, oh, we'd be honoured to have it no matter how it turns out.
[5:29] So, yeah, he did the voice for that show.
[5:31] It was awesome.
[5:32] Thank you, everybody.
[5:34] I'm Peter Harvey.
[5:35] This is Hamish and Andy's Business Brunch and Business Starts.
[5:43] Another thing that I remember very fondly from that time was it became the thing to never email us with –
[5:52] a real name.
[5:53] Yes.
[5:54] It started with Earl Squirrelson.
[5:55] Yes.
[5:56] And there were lots of variations on Earl Squirrelsons and then people began to go, let's just never use our real name.
[6:04] It was funny for a bit and then actually very...
[6:06] It became an absolute pandemic.
[6:08] Nightmare for us.
[6:08] Of fake names.
[6:10] And the emails from the 10th of April for that particular show on the Business Brunch, I don't know what the topic was.
[6:15] Sorry, for 2013, 10th of April, the emails that day came from Skeetbox McCracken...
[6:21] And Rhubarb Montgomery.
[6:22] Rhubarb Montgomery.
[6:24] A couple of classic fake names that appeared on the show.
[6:27] Going right back, this is before I get to what I want to talk about today.
[6:31] In 2007, we were doing Conjoined Twins.
[6:33] We struck ourselves together for whatever it was, like a week.
[6:36] Yep.
[6:36] I think like a Monday to Monday.
[6:40] I forgot this.
[6:41] My girlfriend at the time, Anna, it went over her birthday.
[6:46] Mike's nodding.
[6:47] Yeah, I remember this.
[6:48] I totally forgot that.
[6:48] Didn't we go out to dinner for her birthday?
[6:51] You had a family birthday party and you were at the party and Hamish put a blanket over your head.
[7:01] And do you know what?
[7:02] That was 2007.
[7:02] I think the next year we went to Afghanistan for her birthday.
[7:05] Right.
[7:06] So the show really had a way of getting in the way of her birthdays.
[7:12] That's great.
[7:13] But 2008, this is what I want to talk about.
[7:15] We, over the journey, have had, I would say, some high highs and some low lows with having a celebrity on, having a guest on and trying to come up with a fun thing to do with them that they wouldn't have done ten times already that day.
[7:32] Yes.
[7:32] Because a lot of the time you get an international guest on,
[7:35] It's the same questions like, you know, hey, Vince Vaughn, have you had Vegemite?
[7:39] What's a Tim Tam?
[7:40] Yep.
[7:40] What are you going to do while you're here in Australia?
[7:43] Have you met a koala?
[7:44] You know, standard Australian stuff.
[7:46] And, you know, they're sitting in a room at the Park Hyatt in front of the Sydney Opera House.
[7:51] Being nice.
[7:51] Being nice, going, I'm on a plane in eight hours.
[7:54] He's got like, you know, every radio show says the same stuff.
[7:57] So we would try, we'd be like, what can we do that will hopefully be a bit different for these people?
[8:03] You know, baby Naaman with Matt Damon.
[8:05] Yep.
[8:06] Spring something.
[8:06] Like I don't think, I think Matt Damon had a moment where he was like, okay, well, it's not every day I get to name a baby.
[8:11] That's maybe you're giving him something a bit different.
[8:15] Do you remember?
[8:16] In fact, let's go to our sponsor first because I hope what I've, the way I remember this, I hope what I'm about to play is I hope closer to the high, high end than the low, low end of what we did with Slipp.
[8:27] But I could be wrong.
[8:29] In 2008, we had Mr Rob Thomas.
[8:35] I know what it is.
[8:36] What is it?
[8:37] We were at the Park Hyatt.
[8:38] We were?
[8:39] In Melbourne.
[8:40] Yep.
[8:41] And we did Robbing with Rob Thomas.
[8:43] That's what I saw.
[8:44] Let's have a listen.
[8:47] The 10th of April, 2008.
[8:51] Rob Thomas, Paul, it's Doucette.
[8:53] Doucette.
[8:54] Doucette.
[8:55] Of Matchbox 20, welcome to the Hamish Nanny Show.
[8:57] Why, thank you very much.
[8:59] And thank you for welcoming us into your hotel room, which is lovely.
[9:03] We wanted to play a game called Robbing with Rob Thomas.
[9:05] Oh, I like it.
[9:06] Now, we were trying to think of a name.
[9:08] Wait, no, no, I think this is the... Say the name of the game.
[9:10] Robbing with Rob Thomas.
[9:11] And Paul.
[9:12] Yes.
[9:13] Well, we couldn't think of a name which came, well, something that rhymes with Paul for stealing.
[9:18] But we noticed that there's not a painting on the wall there in your hotel room.
[9:21] What about this?
[9:22] There's no lamps here.
[9:23] Robbing with Rob Thomas and Paul to chuck it on the wall.
[9:26] Yes, I'm in the band.
[9:28] Go.
[9:29] We were hoping.
[9:29] We've got the portal recorder here.
[9:32] A bit of a stealth mission outside.
[9:33] Do you want to steal something?
[9:35] Yeah.
[9:35] Can we go for a little tour?
[9:36] Let's go around the hotel.
[9:37] Do you guys want to steal it and we'll help you steal it?
[9:39] Let's all steal it together.
[9:40] This is where officially...
[9:41] Here's the deal, but here's the only deal.
[9:42] We do this, but only if once we steal it, you guys have to actually steal it and take it with you.
[9:45] Okay.
[9:46] All right, let's go.
[9:46] All right, maybe we go left.
[9:51] Okay, here we go.
[9:52] Oh, what have you spotted?
[9:53] I think I see a housekeeping trolley.
[9:56] A housekeeping trolley.
[9:57] I think that's the go, isn't it?
[9:58] On your account, mate.
[10:00] One, two, three.
[10:01] Go, go, go, go.
[10:02] Go, go, go, go.
[10:04] Okay, Paul's got the cleaner.
[10:05] Hey, Rob, grab that lamp.
[10:06] We need that as well.
[10:07] We have a lamp.
[10:08] We have a lamp and a trolley.
[10:09] Yeah, yeah.
[10:10] And a painting.
[10:11] Seriously, this is going to be so easy to get out of here.
[10:15] Rob, get the front.
[10:15] Get the front.
[10:16] Rob's getting the lamp.
[10:17] Paul, Paul.
[10:18] Here we go.
[10:18] Here we go.
[10:19] Jesus, this thing is too heavy.
[10:20] Paul is pushing the trolley, the housekeeping trolley.
[10:25] We have got the mother of all housekeeping trolleys.
[10:27] This thing's a monster.
[10:29] Back into the room now.
[10:30] Yeah, we're back at headquarters.
[10:33] All right.
[10:33] Hey, Rob, can you tell us what the booty is?
[10:35] Oh, look at this.
[10:37] Look at this.
[10:37] We're rich.
[10:38] It's the mother load.
[10:39] Oh, my gosh.
[10:40] Should we dump it all on the bed and swim in it?
[10:42] We've just opened a case here.
[10:43] Oh, my gosh.
[10:45] If it was shot in Pulp Fiction, we would have opened this case and it would have been glowing on our faces.
[10:49] What have we got here?
[10:50] Hydrating conditioner.
[10:51] Lots of milk.
[10:52] Look at this.
[10:52] Pure peppermint tea.
[10:53] Shower and bath foam.
[10:54] Q-tips.
[10:55] Oh, look at that.
[10:57] Body lotion.
[10:58] Look at this.
[10:58] We've got soaps.
[10:59] We've got wine glasses.
[11:00] We've got vanity sets.
[11:01] Gentlemen.
[11:01] I got your sugar, baby.
[11:03] You got sugar.
[11:04] This is the motherland.
[11:05] And some tea.
[11:06] Fantastic.
[11:07] Wait, well, guys, we're not done here.
[11:09] slippers.
[11:11] Yes!
[11:11] Lots of slippers!
[11:13] Hey guys, this has gone so much better than we ever thought it could.
[11:17] We are rich.
[11:19] Will you guys come on the road with us?
[11:20] And Rob, don't undersell yourself.
[11:22] You also got a lamp on the run.
[11:24] That is true.
[11:25] You did steal a lamp.
[11:25] And it's as big as I am.
[11:27] So now at night, when we're all enjoying our tea and hand cream bounty, we have mood lighting.
[11:33] Guys, by the way, right now there's a poor house cleaning person who's just gone, I'm so
[11:41] There's a couple of parts of this that I like.
[11:42] First of all, it's great to hear from Paul Lissette.
[11:45] Yeah.
[11:45] Paul Lissette.
[11:46] Doucette.
[11:47] Doucette.
[11:49] He actually was a lovely guy, wasn't he?
[11:51] Lovely fellow, but you run into this a lot as when you're interviewing.
[11:57] Where the main person comes on, generally the front man, and they bring the bass player or someone else.
[12:03] Why do they?
[12:04] I guess they do it.
[12:05] You're in a band, Andy.
[12:08] Like I'm not the front man, but for Cam, he'd be my brother.
[12:11] He'd be going, no, I really want you to interview the other guys because it is a band thing.
[12:14] Yeah, because you don't want to be seen by the band as being the guy that's soaking up all the attention.
[12:17] But when you rob Thomas in Matchbox 20, like…
[12:19] I mean, when Slash brought in whoever that guy was, like so often it happens.
[12:26] I mean, Chris Martin was asking us, can the other guys come and do some things?
[12:29] And then they come in and they don't want to talk.
[12:32] Yeah.
[12:32] Because they're like, well, you know, you probably want to hear from Chris Martin, don't you?
[12:36] Well, he brought you in.
[12:38] Exactly.
[12:39] And obviously the front person has had the most media training because they do all the interviews and they're out the front because they're the most charismatic and we want to hear from them.
[12:49] And now they got the job.
[12:50] Exactly.
[12:51] So often you'd have this situation.
[12:53] Yeah, Dave Grohl's an exception.
[12:54] He's not the rule.
[12:55] We'd be sitting there going, okay, we're here with Rob Thomas and Paul.
[12:58] Yep, sorry.
[12:59] And Paul.
[12:59] Yes.
[13:00] Sorry, Paul.
[13:00] We won't say your name because we're not sure if you'll make the edit.
[13:03] But I reckon in a situation like that, Paul Doucette, as we all know, is a very funny guy, nice guy.
[13:10] He was great.
[13:11] Rob's brought him along for company too because they're long days that these like musicians and like movie stars have to just do sitting in a room.
[13:19] I'm not sure if I do that.
[13:21] I was feeling sorry for the housekeeper.
[13:24] Why so was I?
[13:25] Like, listening back to that, where I would have had zero regard for the housekeeper.
[13:30] We were so excited.
[13:30] We were so excited that those guys were up for doing that.
[13:33] Yeah.
[13:33] I'm sure we gave the trolley back.
[13:35] Absolutely.
[13:36] But the...
[13:37] But that lamp still looks good in your house.
[13:39] Yeah, the lamp is good.
[13:42] And I will return it.
[13:44] But good, yeah, Paul and Rob.
[13:46] Paul, good classic guys.
[13:47] Matchbox 20.
[13:48] Little did we know that Rob would go on to be the first ever frontman of our band.
[13:51] I know.
[13:52] Incredible.
[13:53] Some five, six years later.
[13:54] Who knows what Paul will do next.
[13:56] We look forward to seeing.
