[0:02] A listener production.
[0:06] Wilhelm, this is our remembering project.
[0:08] Yep, where a random day of the year is selected and we look up the run sheets from all our shows from across the years to find any we did on that day.
[0:17] Over 20 years, that's about 2,500 shows and roughly 26,000 talk breaks.
[0:22] Today, we pick one.
[0:24] One talk break only and try to remember what happened based on what was written down on the run sheet from that day.
[0:29] As always, we've got podcast Mike with us here for any technical stuff.
[0:32] Hello, Mike.
[0:32] Mike, what date was randomly chosen today?
[0:35] It's the 1st of November.
[0:37] Okay, then.
[0:38] It's Hamish go.
[0:39] Let's kick this off and find out what years Hamish will take us back to and see if we remember anything from those years.
[0:47] This is Hamish and Andy's Remembering Project.
[0:54] And the first thing that flashed up for me when I was looking back through all the years we've done shows on November 1st
[0:59] was just again around about that 2006 era where you go, I'm not sure if we do that these days.
[1:05] And it was not as bad as it sounds because on the run sheet, I dug into this a little bit, on the run sheet it says, Hamish, you don't need to buy a slave off eBay.
[1:13] But it was a sex slave.
[1:15] That's not good.
[1:18] But what it was is someone had listed themselves as a toy boy in sort of like a dominatrix world to be like, please purchase me and tell me what to do.
[1:28] Now, I think we then contacted him and we were like, you know, we'll buy you but obviously we're not going to make you do sex stuff but would you still be interested in fulfilling like domestic tasks?
[1:37] That'd be nice.
[1:37] And we gave him away.
[1:38] Clean out the fridge.
[1:39] So it was this guy that was like, well, I was initially listing myself to be a toy boy.
[1:44] Yeah.
[1:44] But yeah, we had him on.
[1:47] Definitely there's a record of us talking to him and then according to the run sheet,
[1:52] He then agrees to – we gave him to a listener.
[1:55] Gave a listener.
[1:55] And he went around and did stuff around the house for them.
[1:58] And what – But again, probably more of just a security thing.
[2:00] We wouldn't do that these days.
[2:01] Yes.
[2:02] But also, it would have been novel in 2006. eBay.
[2:07] Amazing.
[2:07] For someone to actually put themselves up to do tasks.
[2:11] Like it was like, oh, my God.
[2:12] What a funny idea.
[2:12] What a funny idea that this person's doing.
[2:15] Now, air tasker and all that stuff.
[2:17] You order something from a Chinese restaurant.
[2:19] I'll bring it around to your house for $4.50.
[2:21] This is weird.
[2:22] This will never work.
[2:25] Damn it.
[2:26] It was just another invention that snuck past us.
[2:31] In 2007 on November 1st was the day that we did the show from my house because we were waiting for my couch to arrive.
[2:37] Great day.
[2:38] Great day.
[2:38] Mike Munro came on, I think.
[2:40] He did.
[2:41] We don't have the full show from that day, which is annoying.
[2:43] Missy Higgins performed.
[2:45] I would have loved to hear it because my grandma, Lucy, was in the kitchen.
[2:48] Because she loved Mike Munro.
[2:49] Loved Mike Munro.
[2:50] and she was baking shortbread and she was hosting.
[2:53] She was like guest hosting from the kitchen.
[2:55] We don't have any breaks with her, unfortunately.
[2:56] And this sounds like the kind of thing show you'd do as a joke, like, oh, what a great idea, but actually came about because…
[3:03] Your couch.
[3:04] They kept delaying the delivery and they were only doing it in the afternoon.
[3:07] Yep.
[3:08] On a weekday.
[3:08] On a weekday.
[3:08] And I was like, guys, I've got to drive radio show.
[3:11] This is never – I'll never get this couch.
[3:13] So we decided to actually do this show for you to get a couch delivered.
[3:17] The annoying thing is a lot of the audio from that show has been lost because this is the days we just recorded the highlights.
[3:23] All right.
[3:24] So Joanna Griggs –
[3:25] What year was it?
[3:26] 2007.
[3:27] Yeah, okay.
[3:27] Jonah Griggs gave notes on my house.
[3:29] I think you and her went round the house.
[3:31] Better Homes and Gardens.
[3:32] Better Homes and Gardens.
[3:33] So I, like, critiqued the house and she had a bit of a sticky beak perhaps.
[3:36] She was always awesome on air, Jonah Griggs.
[3:39] Reminded me that she wouldn't be a bad host of Celebrity Medicine Cabinet if we ever get that up.
[3:44] Yep.
[3:45] So keep her in your back pocket for that.
[3:49] Then we, I was hoping, and again, we don't have the audio, there were two on-air breaks dedicated to, the first one is labelled as The Furniture Arrives.
[3:59] So it's like what an exciting moment in history.
[4:02] Yes.
[4:02] Then the next break, we've gone to a song, come back for Furniture Celebration.
[4:07] So maybe we were a little thin on content that day.
[4:09] Maybe we were just doing a bit of like, what else can we talk about in this house?
[4:12] I reckon there's five minutes in celebrating.
[4:15] We don't have it.
[4:17] This might not be very long.
[4:20] It might be.
[4:21] This is what I wanted to talk about today, Ando.
[4:23] It's 2017 and it's to do...
[4:27] To do with the Cool Boys and the Frontman.
[4:29] To do with our tour.
[4:30] This was our last.
[4:32] The first tour we did is the band that we made up.
[4:35] We went on the bus.
[4:36] Yes.
[4:37] We had a tour bus and that was awesome.
[4:38] Melbourne to Byron we drove.
[4:39] Yep.
[4:40] Gigging the whole way with a rest day.
[4:42] Yes.
[4:43] Monday, a classic Monday to Friday rock and roll tour.
[4:47] With a rest day.
[4:48] With a rest day.
[4:49] Yes.
[4:50] Was the rest day Thursday?
[4:51] Yes.
[4:51] Yes.
[4:54] And then finished in Byron, played at the Beach Hotel.
[4:57] Great fun.
[4:58] Fast forward to the next year, we go, how do we top it?
[5:00] What about a private jet?
[5:02] Wouldn't it be cool to zoom around Australia in a private jet?
[5:05] Are we going to say what happened with the private jet?
[5:09] Well, we can.
[5:10] Let's do a great sponsor before we talk about the behind the scenes of the private jet.
[5:19] So you and I, fair to say, and I hope this doesn't come across as us being sort of like arrogant or spoiled, but we went, you know, 12 years in the game by this stage.
[5:30] We're like, we've got a great team around us.
[5:31] Guys, we should be able to get this done.
[5:33] Sure, we can get a private jet.
[5:34] We can figure this out.
[5:35] Like, well, you know, can we advertise them on air?
[5:38] Can we do some sort of exchange?
[5:39] Like, who wants to be involved?
[5:42] What private jet company wants to be involved and get the great publicity that would come?
[5:48] from sponsoring our private jet tour.
[5:49] Yes.
[5:50] Here's the tricky thing.
[5:51] When you're saying something like, you know, what chocolate company would like to be involved, Cadbury might step up because they're like, well, you guys talk to a lot of our customers.
[5:59] Yes.
[6:00] In the private jet world… Yep.
[6:02] We're not talking to a million people that might be on a private jet.
[6:04] Might be hiring a private jet.
[6:06] We didn't even… We've never been on a private jet.
[6:08] So we're like, we don't know how they work.
[6:10] We…
[6:12] I dare say we hadn't lost touch with a common man because we knew that it was another world.
[6:16] Yes.
[6:17] We knew there was another world but we were like maybe… Oh, we just assumed because our team was so good.
[6:22] We were like, well, they'll make it happen.
[6:24] Anytime we kind of… Often we didn't think through ideas and went in reverse for other radio shows.
[6:29] We just set it on air and then generally someone came to the rescue.
[6:33] It was just like a little magic trick.
[6:34] You just say the spell and then the thing appears.
[6:37] So…
[6:38] And it kind of did with this one, we thought.
[6:41] At first, there was a company called Monarch.
[6:43] Now, I've been told by Marshy and our producer, Sam, our old producer, who does oversee this show as well.
[6:51] Sammy was with us back in the day and I said, hey, it's got on the run sheet from 2017.
[6:56] There's a thing in radio where when you're thanking a sponsor, it's called a credit line.
[7:00] Yes.
[7:00] And you might say, okay, we're going to do three credits per show.
[7:03] You know, you might say, oh, you know, we're doing the,
[7:05] remembering project from the gorgeous Overlow Hotel in Woolloomooloo in Sydney.
[7:09] Yes, exactly.
[7:09] That might count as one credit.
[7:10] Yep.
[7:11] And if you forgot to do credits, you might say, I say again.
[7:13] Amy Stewart, you used to be able to go.
[7:17] I say again, thanks to the Overlow Hotel.
[7:20] Hosting us here at their beautiful hotel, that's two credits.
[7:22] And on the most part.
[7:23] You might say, and in case you miss me, Overlow, Overlow, Overlow.
[7:26] Woolloomooloo, Overlow Hotel, very comfortable, which is where we are.
[7:29] But the thing is, Abe.
[7:31] Four credits.
[7:33] I used to be responsible for the credits on the most part.
[7:35] You did.
[7:35] You did.
[7:36] You had the credit sheets.
[7:36] You'd take them off.
[7:38] And Sam would go, due to the excitement of the show, I was going, I would forget sometimes.
[7:44] And then Sam would go, oh, my gosh, we owe three credits.
[7:47] And that's when I would come back and say thanks to whoever it was.
[7:50] And I would often add in.
[7:51] And the English would just lean in and go.
[7:53] We say again.
[7:54] We say again.
[7:54] Thanks to 7-Eleven.
[7:56] And then I'd go, two credits there, Sammy.
[7:58] You go, it's not how it works, mate.
[7:59] It's like, well, we said it twice.
[8:01] So I was a fan of bulking the credit, getting a mass bulk credit away.
[8:06] So I saw on the Monarch and it just made me laugh, November 1st, 2017, the Monarch long credit.
[8:12] Mm-hmm.
[8:13] And a long credit is where you're expected to talk for some time about the company and how much you like them.
[8:19] That's the deal.
[8:20] Some radio shows got their producers to write the long credits.
[8:26] To make sure all the key points were hit.
[8:28] We didn't find that so natural, so we would just crap on about it for a while.
[8:32] Sam has asked me to make it very clear that we're talking about the Australian company Monarch Air here.
[8:40] and our relationship with them, not to be confused with an American company of the same name.
[8:45] I forgot this, but obviously on the producing side of things, Sam ran into a bit of...
[8:49] Yes.
[8:50] There's a different company in America that are very good.
[8:52] Yep.
[8:54] We had some...
[8:56] Troubles, didn't we, with the Australian...
[8:58] I mean, I don't think they're around anymore because weren't they going under as we started dealing with them?
[9:02] I think so.
[9:03] And look, we're heading into kind of...
[9:05] Murky water.
[9:06] Murky water with slander and stuff.
[9:07] But what all... Maybe they weren't going under.
[9:10] Maybe they weren't counting difficulties.
[9:12] What I can recall is...
[9:16] All the promises were made.
[9:17] They loved the idea.
[9:18] They wished they could follow through on it.
[9:20] They were sort of buying some time.
[9:22] Yep.
[9:24] And I think it was a Canadian guy originally who was a podcaster.
[9:28] He said, I've got a private jet company.
[9:31] I'd love you to give you one.
[9:33] And we're like, great.
[9:34] And so he went down that path.
[9:37] Austereo…
[9:41] somehow had given away, had spent some money for some reason.
[9:45] Like there was… They gave him some money.
[9:47] They invested some money, like a small amount.
[9:50] I think it was like… Like a deposit or something?
[9:53] Well, I think it was like, guys, we can do the private jet, but we'll do it for 30 grand, which is far under what it would cost to try this private jet around.
[10:01] Yeah.
[10:03] And then our company, the radio station goes, cool, okay.
[10:05] Well, do you want to deposit?
[10:06] Yeah, yeah.
[10:07] We'll give you – give us 15 up front or something.
[10:09] They gave them that and they never got it back, I think.
[10:12] Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[10:14] I think – Mike did a bit of a, oh.
[10:17] So then Dave's having a meeting with us.
[10:20] Yeah.
[10:20] And I'm not saying that this is to the Monarch company.
[10:23] It might have been difficult.
[10:24] But they've had a meeting with us to say, hey, this company isn't giving us $15,000 back.
[10:29] Don't think they can.
[10:30] So we've already lost $15,000 on this.
[10:32] Yeah, we're down.
[10:33] We're back to square one.
[10:34] Now we're down a heap of money.
[10:36] And I don't think we can do the private jet.
[10:37] And I was like, well, we've just been talking about it relentlessly because we know the magic trick.
[10:42] We say it and normally it turns out fine.
[10:45] So thankfully another company came to the rescue.
[10:49] Who was the next company?
[10:49] Because they were the heroes, the guys we actually flew with.
[10:52] Yes.
[10:52] They had an app which was basically a ride share, a flight share app for private jets.
[11:00] I can't remember what it was called.
[11:02] Can't remember the name.
[11:03] But the guys we actually ended up flying with were terrific.
[11:05] Yeah.
[11:06] The reason the Monarch long credit made me laugh when I saw it on the run sheet was because I was like,
[11:11] What a moment in time where, and I'd like to play it for a second.
[11:14] I don't know how much love we're giving Monarch.
[11:16] Maybe it's scripted, maybe it's not, but it was us at the time thinking these guys were our best friends.
[11:22] Little did we know, probably days away from finding out we'd been… Fleece for 15, but also… Less than ideal relationship had actually taken place.
[11:31] Also giving them tens of thousands of dollars worth of on-air credits for the sponsorship.
[11:36] But, yeah, this will be fun to see you back.
[11:39] The 1st of November 2017.
[11:44] Hey, Michelle, driving you home.
[11:45] And hey, of course, we're thanking Monarch Aviation.
[11:48] Why fly a commercial when you can fly private?
[11:51] That's what we're doing.
[11:53] We're going to be in a private jet.
[11:54] You can do it at two.
[11:54] You download the app.
[11:55] It's Monarch without an H. It's a flight sharing app.
[11:58] So if they've got a jet in a spot and they need to get it to somewhere else.
[12:02] You can share it.
[12:03] You can share it.
[12:03] You can get cheap flights.
[12:05] You and your mates could jump on a plane, a private jet head, to where they might team up with where you want to go.
[12:10] And you find yourself in a private jet for a fraction of the price.
[12:13] That's what we've weaseled for an entire weekend.
[12:16] It's only three weeks away at the end of this week.
[12:18] The difference is we get to decide where it's going, which is very nice.
[12:21] Yes, we do.
[12:22] We get on the jet in the morning.
[12:24] We spin the globe.
[12:25] We land our finger.
[12:27] Lo and behold, it's Brisbane, Newcastle.
[12:31] Lucky for the jet company, we're able to land our finger very, very close to where we are.
[12:37] So maybe I've misremembered.
[12:40] Do we like Monarch?
[12:42] So my memory of this is that Monarch was...
[12:45] Were the good guys.
[12:46] I don't think so.
[12:48] I think Monarch was the company, the only company, and they went under.
[12:52] Yeah, and then...
[12:53] So they were the ride-sharing ones at the start.
[12:55] So we never used a ride-sharing one.
[12:57] We never used Monarch.
[12:57] Maybe we just got another... We just got some other jet guys to help us out.
[13:03] I reckon that's what's happened.
[13:04] Yeah.
[13:06] But yeah, it was an awful time, wasn't it?
[13:09] Well, we were...
[13:11] It kind of hamstrung us for a while because we were just talking up this private jet tour so much.
[13:15] And we really thought, I mean, again, naive, hopeful, arrogant.
[13:20] We really thought.
[13:21] I also didn't know how much.
[13:22] I had no idea how much private jets cost.
[13:24] Didn't think private jets cost that much.
[13:26] Not knowing this, it was the worst of both worlds because private jets are obviously heinously expensive and they have no interest in being associated with a radio show.
[13:33] It doesn't matter to them, one squirt.
[13:36] Didn't you do like one flight with Monarch and then they pulled the trigger and you couldn't do it anymore?
[13:41] No, so then the new – what actually happened was we had the private jet –
[13:46] To Brisbane, to Newcastle.
[13:48] Yep.
[13:48] It wasn't as big as we thought it was going to be.
[13:51] No.
[13:51] We were still loving it on air.
[13:53] I mean, it was still fun to fly in a – it was a private – It's nice to have a PJ.
[13:56] It was a private plane, but it was a six – it was a six-seater.
[13:59] We thought we might have beds and stuff in it and showers, but it turns out that we – No, that's us in a minivan, Mike, that photo.
[14:06] So we turned up to the airport in Brizzy and went –
[14:11] I remember we got to the airport in Brisbane and we were like driving to the private side of the airfield.
[14:15] Yep.
[14:16] There was a Gulfstream, a G7 there and the guy that was in charge of helping us, he goes, there's your jet.
[14:24] And we went, sick.
[14:25] Like we were like, yeah, great.
[14:27] Because that's what we were imagining like this sort of like giant.
[14:30] Air Force one.
[14:32] Air Force half.
[14:32] Well, like a Kim Kardashian type like Gulfstream jet.
[14:36] So we're like, yeah, awesome.
[14:38] He thought he was making such a clearly sarcastic joke that like as if you'd be like, so we're sitting there waiting.
[14:45] We're all pumped up, like pushing each other around, giggling.
[14:47] We've got our jackets on that we got made for the trip.
[14:50] And then we go out to the tarmac and he's trying to put us in this six-seater.
[14:54] We're like, I thought that was the joke.
[14:56] So we're like, oh, funny.
[14:58] Isn't that our plane?
[14:59] And they're like, no.
[15:00] Our heads hit the roof.
[15:02] And he's like, he goes, no, that's like a $100 million plane.
[15:05] And we went.
[15:07] Yeah, but isn't that the way we're flying?
[15:10] So the way we saved money was a couple of things.
[15:13] We flew commercial.
[15:14] Essentially.
[15:14] At the end of the trip, didn't we fly commercial from Brisbane to Melbourne?
[15:19] Well, yeah.
[15:19] Essentially, they said we can't do all legs.
[15:22] And we're like, well, we just need a jet for some reason.
[15:24] So we were hoping to obviously leave Melbourne and land at a RAF base.
[15:28] up in Newcastle, wasn't it?
[15:30] That's right.
[15:30] They said, no, save money.
[15:32] We flew commercial to Brisbane.
[15:34] The last leg of Brisbane to Newcastle.
[15:36] I think they flew back down to Newcastle.
[15:38] Then we flew to Newcastle in the private jet, landed in the RAF base.
[15:41] Then we did fly private.
[15:43] Then we did fly in that little jet.
[15:44] from Newcastle over to New Zealand.
[15:46] A slightly bigger jet.
[15:47] Another jet arrived.
[15:48] A different jet.
[15:49] That's right.
[15:49] They switched jets.
[15:50] They switched jets.
[15:51] And it was better.
[15:52] It was better.
[15:52] That was fun.
[15:53] That we flew to Hamilton in New Zealand, which was awesome.
[15:56] And the other thing of no customs and stuff like that was pretty exciting.
[16:00] Just like, and leave when you want.
[16:02] Then we flew New Zealand back to Brizzy and that was it.
[16:07] And that was it.
[16:08] Basically, we did the gig that night with Jess Malboy.
[16:11] And then commercial home.
[16:13] Flew commercial home, had a rest day.
[16:15] Yep.
[16:16] So it was three flights for them.
[16:19] It just wasn't as rock and roll as we were thinking.
[16:20] Opposed to the original seven or so we were hoping for.
[16:23] Because initially we were like… A rest day in Hamilton Island.
[16:26] Remember we were going to fly to Uluru for our rest day.
[16:28] Yeah.
[16:29] Because we just thought we had free reign, unlimited range.
[16:33] Yep.
[16:34] And then once they were just like, no, no, you've got to pay for fuel and you've got to pay airport fees.
[16:39] It was hundreds of thousands of dollars.
[16:42] And didn't Crown jump on at a sponsor for the last day and you stayed at the Crown?
[16:47] We did the show from Crown, yeah.
[16:49] Although, if you had to have your pick, you would pick the Overload.
[16:56] Multicredit.
[16:57] Can't remember it.
[16:58] Yeah.
