Hamish & Andy recall one of their first forays into client integration with Mitsubishion Impossible! How you could become a Million-Yen-Aire and why they ended up in Adelaide at Mitsubishi’s head office. They discuss why it was smart of Kyle & Jackie O to ban them from broadcasting on the same station, and they question why Brian McFadden was on the show so often in the early days! The boys also listen back to the first ever Trading Post Game, and listener Nath finally gets the credit he deserves! Hamish & Andy's Remembering Project. Season 2, Episode 2.

## Transcript

[0:02] A listener production.
[0:06] Wilhelm, this is our remembering project.
[0:08] Yep, where a random day of the year is selected and we look up the run sheets from all our shows from across the years to find any we did on that day.
[0:17] Over 20 years, that's about 2,500 shows and roughly 26,000 talk breaks.
[0:22] Today, we pick one.
[0:24] One talk break only and try to remember what happened based on what was written down on the run sheet from that day.
[0:29] As always, we've got podcast Mike with us here for any technical stuff.
[0:32] Hello.
[0:32] Mike, what date was randomly chosen today?
[0:35] It's February 28th.
[0:36] Okay, that's Andy's go then.
[0:38] Let's kick it off and find out what years Andy will take us back to and we'll see if we remember anything from those years.
[0:47] This is Hamish and Andy's Remembering Project.
[0:54] Hey, February 28.
[0:55] Leap year day eve in some years.
[0:59] Only did a show in four years.
[1:02] Didn't we really?
[1:03] So only in 07, 08, 13 and 14.
[1:07] Low yielding date.
[1:08] Why do you reckon that is?
[1:10] Is it something to do with the leap year?
[1:12] I don't know.
[1:13] I can't think.
[1:14] There's always a Feb 28.
[1:15] I was going to say, just unlucky with weekends, I guess.
[1:19] Maybe.
[1:19] Just a weekend spread.
[1:21] Hey, 2007.
[1:23] We did one of the first integrated client games.
[1:28] Oh, wow.
[1:28] Right.
[1:29] Yeah, great.
[1:30] I mean, the landscape was changing.
[1:32] No longer did Toyota just want to be thanks-toed.
[1:35] Yes.
[1:36] There's a chip, like a quiz, a pop quiz thanks to Toyota.
[1:40] Not interested.
[1:40] Not interested.
[1:41] We want you to do the Toyota Belota.
[1:44] Who can bloat the most by eating the foods that are wrong for them or whatever.
[1:50] You're so close.
[1:53] Can you remember what we did for Mitsubishi?
[1:56] Oh, Mitsubishi Impossible.
[1:58] Mitsubishi Impossible.
[2:00] It was one of the best.
[2:02] And you could become a million-yen-yenaire.
[2:03] Million-yenaire, yes.
[2:05] Million-yenaire.
[2:06] Yeah.
[2:07] You went a million-yen, which at the time, Mike, you would know being a Sinophile.
[2:12] Is that a Japanese?
[2:13] I have no idea what that term is.
[2:14] Actually, no.
[2:15] I think that's a Chinese fan.
[2:16] Okay.
[2:17] But being a Japanese fan, a fan of Japan…
[2:21] I loosely transfer like 1,000 yen is like,
[2:26] $7 or $8.
[2:27] Yeah, so $10,000 was about $10,000.
[2:30] Sorry, a million was about $10,000.
[2:32] Yes.
[2:32] Not bad.
[2:33] I enjoyed that competition.
[2:36] And here's another memory from about that time, because we were based in Melbourne.
[2:41] Like, we lived in Melbourne, broadcasted out of Melbourne, but we were a national show.
[2:45] That year we were everywhere but Sydney because Kyle and Jackie O wouldn't let us be the drive show in Sydney.
[2:49] No, 2007 we just got there.
[2:51] 2006 mid-year, Kyle and Jackie O didn't let us.
[2:55] They didn't want us in Sydney.
[2:56] Okay.
[2:56] But it was still, they just wanted to replay the breakfast show.
[2:59] And it was a good move, Buck.
[3:01] He knows what he's doing.
[3:02] Hold on to your territory.
[3:03] So we went national after six months in 2006.
[3:06] Well, Melbourne only.
[3:07] That's right.
[3:07] Then national except Sydney.
[3:09] Except Sydney.
[3:10] Couldn't quite get it done in Sydney.
[3:12] So no one was doing drive in Sydney?
[3:14] No.
[3:14] The Kyle and Jackie O breakfast show is just being replayed in the afternoon.
[3:17] Because Kyle did not want us anywhere near his station.
[3:20] Kyle just was like, well, why would I give up the afternoon replay?
[3:23] Yeah.
[3:23] That's smart.
[3:24] Yeah.
[3:25] Respect it.
[3:25] All power to him.
[3:26] Anyway, so what I remember is like Mitsubishi was they came on board and it was always because you're fairly protected from the sales side of things.
[3:34] You always get the impression like maybe it's a good get, maybe it's not.
[3:38] There's a lot of excitement.
[3:39] And the general, again, to peel back the curtain a little bit on the way like the TV and radio works, you've got the sales guys and girls whose job it is to get the clients and...
[3:51] We're obviously sitting on there going, well, we don't want any of this.
[3:53] No.
[3:54] Like we'd just rather do fun things.
[3:55] Do our own ideas, yeah.
[3:56] But we understand also that it's a business and this is part of the thing.
[4:00] So they're saying to us, yeah, like, you know, let's pick a random client, whatever, Yoplait.
[4:05] They just want to do anything in the show.
[4:07] They're happy.
[4:08] Then they go back to Yoplait and they say, look, the guys really want you in the show.
[4:12] Like, they… Exactly.
[4:14] They are wearing berets.
[4:16] They just… They won't touch Yelna.
[4:18] They hate every other yogurt.
[4:19] They just want you in the show.
[4:21] They can't wait to do this idea.
[4:23] Yeah.
[4:23] And they'd always say, and the guys have got a great idea for you.
[4:26] Yeah, the guys are really excited for this idea.
[4:28] Then… They come back to us.
[4:29] They come back to us and we're like, oh, we don't want to… What do we have to do?
[4:32] And they're like, oh, the Yoplay, we should do anything.
[4:33] Yeah, Yoplay are so excited and they're really pumped for any idea that you want.
[4:38] And we're like, oh, okay, so we'll think of a Yoplay idea.
[4:40] So, and there was like, you know, a lot of clients were great and we had a lot of fun.
[4:44] In the end, you would always have a lot of fun doing these things.
[4:46] But I remember going to Adelaide.
[4:48] We were doing this show out of Adelaide for a while and we had to go to the Mitsubishi…
[4:51] Didn't we go to the headquarters early days to pump up to be like, Guys, really looking forward to playing Mitsubishi and Impossible with you.
[4:59] That's how, this was still early on, so we had to like personally thank them for letting us do Mitsubishi and Impossible.
[5:05] Yes.
[5:06] Because it was like not really what they wanted to do.
[5:09] Yeah, we used to have to go to the companies.
[5:11] And beg.
[5:12] And beg them.
[5:14] Beg them to allow, to like thank them for their radio money.
[5:17] But the last game in Mitsubishi Impossible… Yes, so it was a series of challenges.
[5:22] Yeah.
[5:22] I remember that.
[5:22] And the people had to do with the Mitsubishi… Or whatever.
[5:27] I can't remember the model.
[5:27] It would have been Outlander or something.
[5:29] I think it was the Outlander.
[5:31] The last game though was…
[5:34] Who could get the furthest away in their car?
[5:37] Oh, from the station.
[5:38] From the station in the start of the... And they both were in different cities.
[5:42] Again, these days, legal issues.
[5:43] I don't think you'd be allowed to do that.
[5:45] Yeah.
[5:46] And so off they went and drove and they had to pick a route to go to try and get the furthest away.
[5:53] And it was kind of fun checking in with them.
[5:55] Why did we have someone in the studio on a treadmill
[5:59] Oh, that was for this as well, wasn't it?
[6:01] I reckon it was a combination of how far you can drive… Times how… Times how far your mate runs in the triple.
[6:08] Because I remember we had two people in the studio sprinting their guts out.
[6:12] Like one guy ran 10Ks in like 40 minutes hammering in the studio.
[6:19] I think you're right.
[6:20] Do you remember that?
[6:20] I don't quite remember it.
[6:21] But yeah, I think there's something like that.
[6:23] It rings a bell.
[6:24] So we…
[6:25] To try and even it up a bit.
[6:26] It's like pick a mate to come in.
[6:28] Yep.
[6:29] And that was part of Mitsubishi Impossible.
[6:31] So that was that for 2007.
[6:32] Not bad.
[6:33] Not bad, Mike.
[6:36] Set the high watermark.
[6:37] It was one of our best names.
[6:38] Yeah, absolutely.
[6:39] It's a great name.
[6:40] Actually, I still remember like years later we would be doing stuff again and everyone's sitting around trying to think of the name for the segment going, God, you really want a Mitsubishi Impossible.
[6:52] I think it ruined us early on.
[6:54] Hey, I just want to travel one more year forward, 2008.
[6:59] Brian McFadden was on again.
[7:01] We had Brian McFadden on all the time.
[7:03] He was an absolute go-to.
[7:04] Yeah.
[7:05] Like he was, I suppose he was engaged to Delta or Dating Delta at that time.
[7:09] What show, what TV show did he do?
[7:11] He was a judge on something.
[7:12] Would have been Australia's Got Talent or X Factor or something.
[7:16] But McFadden was so Australian.
[7:18] He was just, yeah, because of the Delta thing.
[7:20] But also he became a judge.
[7:22] And he was just one of those smart international guys that went...
[7:25] I'm medium.
[7:27] I'm medium in Ireland and the UK.
[7:29] Yep.
[7:30] But I'm huge.
[7:30] Australia thinks I'm huge.
[7:32] So I'll just go and play there.
[7:33] Westlife.
[7:34] Was he Westlife?
[7:35] Possibly.
[7:35] Possibly.
[7:37] Anyway, when I was flicking through a lot of the dates come up, Brian McFadden throughout 2008 seems to be on our show way more than you'd remember.
[7:46] It's like we want a year's supply of Brian McFadden and we just invited everyone over to eat him.
[7:50] I'm not going to play a bit from Brian McFadden because we know it's a bit cheeky Irishman.
[7:54] What I do want to play from February 28, 2008, is the first time we ever played the Trading Post game.
[8:03] Oh, wow.
[8:05] Yes.
[8:05] So for people who don't know, this is a segment where… Did it even have the jingle on it?
[8:10] I don't even know.
[8:11] We don't even know.
[8:11] Because I think the jingle came later.
[8:14] I think the jingle came after we'd played it.
[8:17] Well, we'd often do this, Mike.
[8:18] We'd trial a segment and not staple it like it's going to be a regular segment.
[8:23] Just trial a game or an idea.
[8:24] We didn't really love repeating things.
[8:26] And we'd just be like, this is just a one-off idea.
[8:28] And then you'd get someone going, well, do it again.
[8:31] They're like, repeat it.
[8:31] They're like, people do do that.
[8:33] Yeah.
[8:35] I don't know if you've heard Secret Sound or like... Alpha Bucks.
[8:39] Alpha Bucks.
[8:40] We do a quiz every day.
[8:43] Yeah, that's right.
[8:44] So occasionally we'd find something that we thought was worth repeating and then we became more comfortable with that as the years went on.
[8:51] But I don't know whether this will have an opener.
[8:53] I don't reckon it's got the opener.
[8:54] If it's the first one, it's remember coming up with it later.
[8:57] So what we do is we ring someone to ask them about their ad in the trading post.
[9:03] One of us would start the call.
[9:05] Yep.
[9:05] And then confirm with them that I'd like you to talk to you about your esky, whatever it might be, while the other person in the studio would put their fingers in their ears.
[9:16] And block.
[9:17] And block.
[9:18] Just so you didn't – did we even air that bit?
[9:21] I don't think.
[9:21] We probably didn't even air that bit.
[9:22] Probably didn't air that bit.
[9:23] But that's how we had to do it so the game worked.
[9:24] Because often if you – so I'd pick –
[9:27] I see something like, oh, Harley Davidson tyres.
[9:29] And Andy's got five questions to guess what they are, but he can't ask what are they.
[9:34] But if you ring people up and you go, hey, I'm just calling you.
[9:35] But if Andy was to make the call and go, I'm calling you.
[9:37] You're out in the trading post.
[9:38] The guy would say, oh, the Harley Davidson tires.
[9:40] And the game would be over.
[9:41] The game would be over.
[9:42] So I would have to make the call.
[9:43] Yeah.
[9:43] And go, hey, man, I'm just calling you about the Harley Davidson tires.
[9:46] And then the guy would go, yeah.
[9:47] And then I'd hand it over to Andy who would unblock his ears and the game would begin from.
[9:51] That's how we had to do it.
[9:52] Yep.
[9:52] So you could still play the guessing game.
[9:55] We didn't air that bit because it was confusing.
[9:57] But we just realized that's the only way you can do it.
[9:59] Because the natural thing anyone says that had an ad in the trading post is,
[10:03] Yeah, the fish tank.
[10:03] And a lot of people were serial trading posts.
[10:07] Yes, so they would know.
[10:07] So they'd go, which one?
[10:09] And you'd go, I don't know.
[10:11] So you needed someone to jump in.
[10:12] It's the half chandelier.
[10:13] Yep, no worries.
[10:15] Anyway, this is the first time we ever played it.
[10:18] Great.
[10:19] Oh, before that actually.
[10:20] Oh, yeah.
[10:20] Something even more memorable.
[10:22] Yes.
[10:23] Our sponsors who, by the way, love.
[10:25] They love being a machine.
[10:28] Okay, great.
[10:28] Now this is the first time we ever played the trading post game.
[10:31] Oh.
[10:33] The 28th of February, 2008.
[10:37] Love our listeners, Andy.
[10:38] Oh, yeah.
[10:39] God, we've got some good listeners.
[10:41] And if you're listening now, you're one of them.
[10:43] And thank you.
[10:44] And we love you.
[10:44] A guy called Nath emailed and he said, got a bit of a challenge for you guys.
[10:49] Andy, get a copy of the trading post.
[10:51] I've done it.
[10:52] Got one for you.
[10:52] It's right here.
[10:53] Flick through and pick any item you want.
[10:56] Call that number.
[10:57] And now it's my job here as Hamish to, without actually asking the person on the other end of the line, what are you selling?
[11:05] I have to figure out with five questions...
[11:08] what the guy is actually selling.
[11:11] Okay?
[11:11] So, Andy, you pick whatever item you want.
[11:14] Pick an item you think will stump me.
[11:15] Okay.
[11:16] I've got one here, and I'm pretty happy with it.
[11:19] So I've only got five questions, and after I've said five questions, I've got to jump in with a guess.
[11:23] Yeah, exactly.
[11:24] For people at home, you'll hear a chime.
[11:26] I'm going to play a chime after five, so then Hamish has to guess.
[11:29] I mean, feel free to play along in your car too, or wherever you are.
[11:32] But I've selected an item from the trading post here.
[11:35] Can you tell me what section?
[11:36] No, no sections.
[11:38] That's the game.
[11:39] And I've given the number to Giggling Ben and Haim.
[11:42] You've got five questions, and then you have to guess.
[11:45] All right, the number's going in now.
[11:47] Do I get... Is there a name?
[11:49] No, there's no name.
[11:50] It is dialling, so...
[11:51] They often say a name.
[11:52] You're allowed to give me a name.
[11:53] No, there's no name.
[11:55] When do they ever say a name?
[11:56] I think they say names sometimes.
[11:58] I've got the paper and it doesn't look like that.
[12:02] Hello, Chris here.
[12:05] Yeah, g'day Chris, it's Michael here.
[12:07] How are you going?
[12:09] Michael.
[12:09] I'm just going about your trading post ad.
[12:12] Oh, yes.
[12:13] Yeah, I'm interested.
[12:15] Yeah?
[12:16] Just wondering how old it is.
[12:18] Actually, I really don't know, but it looks very modern.
[12:24] Okay, okay.
[12:25] It's got a tiny, it must have been put in a garage somewhere because it has a very tiny, and I mean tiny, touches of dust, of rust.
[12:36] Yep.
[12:36] But you're kind of hard to find them.
[12:39] Do you reckon, I've got a station wagon, if I came over to pick it up, could I fit it in the back of my station wagon?
[12:44] Oh, no problem at all.
[12:45] Really?
[12:46] Good.
[12:46] That's good.
[12:47] And what's, is it much loved?
[12:50] Has it been in the family for a while?
[12:52] No, it hasn't.
[12:55] It looks new to me.
[12:56] Does it?
[12:57] There's not a mark on it apart from the rust that I told you about, rust pecs.
[13:01] Yeah.
[13:02] It doesn't have any power cables with it, does it?
[13:05] No power cables at all.
[13:07] It's very simple, it's lightweight, it's got a carry strap and it falls easily.
[13:13] And does it have batteries or anything?
[13:18] No, no, it's very, very simple.
[13:20] It's got about one, two, about five cushions on it.
[13:24] They look new.
[13:26] So it's a...
[13:27] Bright blue and the bodywork, all the framework is quadrated and chromed.
[13:34] It's very well put together, actually.
[13:37] So it's a lovely chair.
[13:41] It looks good to me.
[13:42] It's a modern chair.
[13:44] A modern... And it is a chair?
[13:46] Well, no, you kind of kneel on it and you lean into it, haven't you?
[13:50] Have you ever seen a massage chair?
[13:53] It's a massage chair.
[13:55] Yeah.
[13:56] Okay, yeah, no, well done.
[14:00] Okay, no, thank you, Chris.
[14:01] Let me have a quick think.
[14:02] I'll give you a call back.
[14:04] It's not quite what you wanted.
[14:05] You were thinking of an electrically operated thing, were you?
[14:08] I guess so.
[14:10] You got me?
[14:10] You got me, Chris?
[14:11] Okay.
[14:11] Okay, bye-bye.
[14:12] Ciao.
[14:14] Did Chris get you or did I get you?
[14:16] Oh, you dog!
[14:17] I panicked!
[14:22] I got it, though.
[14:22] It's a chair.
[14:23] Yeah, no, it's a massage chair.
[14:25] Was I going to get a massage chair?
[14:28] It's a massage chair.
[14:31] I can't believe it was Nath's idea Well done Nath Here we are going We've had so many wonderful ideas The cool thing about us is You just never know how many ideas We're going to have in a given day Or how many emails we'll read And just do Nath's idea Great example of how good Our listeners have been over the ride So many great ideas come from Here's just a cool dance I thought of I'm not copying it off TikTok It's just that this is a dance I thought of And I just want everyone to have a look at my dance That might be really cool Good game
[15:00] Greg, I tell you what, listening to it for a second time, I'm like, what is that thing?
[15:04] I've got no idea.
[15:05] I really wanted to find it out as well.
[15:07] You went twice on size.
[15:08] Electrical.
[15:09] I went twice on size and twice on electrics.
[15:11] When the guy says it doesn't have any power cables, I don't know why your next guess would be, what about batteries?
[15:16] No?
[15:16] Okay.
[15:17] Any antennas that could capture lightning from to power it?
[15:21] Mate, it's not powered.
[15:22] I've still got two questions left.
[15:25] Good fun.
