## Transcript

[0:02] A listener production.
[0:06] Wilhelm, this is our remembering project.
[0:08] Yep, where a random day of the year is selected and we look up the run sheets from all our shows from across the years to find any we did on that day.
[0:17] Over 20 years, that's about 2,500 shows and roughly 26,000 talk breaks.
[0:22] Today, we pick one.
[0:24] One talk break only and try to remember what happened based on what was written down on the run sheet from that day.
[0:29] As always, we've got podcast Mike with us here for any technical stuff.
[0:32] Hello.
[0:32] Mike, what date was randomly chosen today?
[0:35] It's the 30th of July.
[0:37] Okay, then.
[0:38] It's Hamish go.
[0:39] Let's kick this off and find out what years Ham will take us back to and see if we remember anything from those years.
[0:47] This is Hamish and Andy's Remembering Project.
[0:53] All right, Ando.
[0:54] Some interesting stuff happening across the years for July 30th.
[1:01] Most recently, the thing that caught my eye was back in 2014.
[1:04] Yeah.
[1:06] It was one of the days we were going across.
[1:08] I think it was the day we...
[1:10] were about to prepare to leave Rockhampton to go across to the people's island.
[1:14] Oh, wow.
[1:15] That was the middle of the year in 2014.
[1:18] So people don't know, we bought an island.
[1:20] Yeah.
[1:21] We got a 100-year lease of an island.
[1:23] Still have it.
[1:23] Still have it.
[1:25] Technically, its name is the Iron Islet.
[1:28] Yes.
[1:28] I-S-L-E-T, which is a mini island off the coast of it.
[1:34] Well, you know.
[1:35] 20 or 30 metres off the coast of another island, walkable at low tide.
[1:39] Yes.
[1:40] But still able to be… Called an island.
[1:42] Called an island at high tide.
[1:44] And when we say islet, it sounds like it's the size of, you know, four SUVs.
[1:50] But this was huge.
[1:51] It was a lot.
[1:52] The size of a footy field.
[1:53] The size of a footy field.
[1:53] And a huge kind of rocky outcrop kind of going up to the top.
[1:56] So a lot of interesting places you could go on the island.
[1:58] Yeah.
[1:59] The thing I remember about the build-up to the island was it was the first time I realized that people – I still don't know how you can do this, but people could obviously hack Google Maps.
[2:07] Because when you zoomed in, it was, you know, off the coast of, you know, Rockhampton, whatever.
[2:14] It was like, you know, 100 k's out to sea or something like that.
[2:17] I don't know, 50 k's out to sea.
[2:18] So we had to take a light plane out, land at the nearby island and walk across it.
[2:23] But people absolutely saturated it with tourist attractions because we were planning on developing it.
[2:28] We wanted a casino there.
[2:29] People were putting village cinemas there, shopping centres.
[2:32] There was like 800 attractions crammed onto 160 square metres of land.
[2:38] It was fantastic.
[2:40] But this was the – well, we don't have the run sheet from this day.
[2:44] But one thing that was on the record was us, we did a test assemble of the aerial.
[2:50] Oh, yes.
[2:50] Remember we needed, we bought this massive antenna.
[2:53] So this was probably before we left and we did, yeah, we had to take out a huge antenna which I think was 14 metres high.
[3:00] Yeah.
[3:01] Yeah.
[3:01] But the funny thing was it was a mobile phone boosting antenna because it was to just send a signal back to the mainland.
[3:07] So it was like...
[3:08] You could plug your phone into it.
[3:10] And I think we plugged the show in.
[3:13] I think we recorded the show and had to beam it back to the mainland, essentially using 3G.
[3:18] Yeah.
[3:19] But the antenna was 14 meters high.
[3:22] Yeah.
[3:23] But all connected to a tiny phone.
[3:24] Yeah.
[3:25] It was not practical.
[3:26] No.
[3:27] But it kind of worked.
[3:28] No, but some people that are addicted to their phones, I'm sure would love it.
[3:33] Because sometimes you're just in a suburb that's not giving it.
[3:36] Yeah.
[3:36] But, yeah, you'd see teenage kids just outside assembling the 14-metre high aerial.
[3:42] And it was just kind of a singular pole.
[3:45] Like, it was essentially to get this thing high enough and then looked like just a television antenna at the top.
[3:51] It was ridiculous.
[3:52] But, I mean, it's been a long part of the day assembling that.
[3:54] And I was bored because I'd bought a machete.
[3:56] I remember just walking around in the background chopping things up with my machete most of the day.
[4:00] Remember we destroyed… We did the show from the Rockhampton radio station.
[4:04] Yep.
[4:04] And we destroyed a bit of stuff in there with the machete.
[4:10] We did?
[4:10] I can't remember.
[4:12] Were we just doing a test drive of the machete?
[4:14] I think you just did a test drive of the machete.
[4:16] Yeah.
[4:17] And the thing about – and look, we don't feel great about this because the thing about regional radio stations is they get upgraded every 35 years.
[4:25] And usually by just parts from a metro radio station.
[4:28] I'd run into people from that Rockhampton Radio Studio, scenes at like radio events and functions, and they're like, yeah, it's still – you know, there's still chunks missing from the desk.
[4:37] Yeah.
[4:37] And we – Real city boy stuff.
[4:39] Coming into Rocky and chopping up the desk with a machete.
[4:42] Where we were in the Melbourne studios or the Sydney studios, we were happy to fire anything off because if it got busted, we'd be like, all right, well, I'll fix that.
[4:49] Again, a bit of rat bag behavior.
[4:52] Slightly rat baggy, which I do apologize for.
[4:56] So that should take care of that.
[4:59] to studios and then seven years later I said sorry on a spin-off podcast.
[5:06] Here's something that happened on July 30, right?
[5:09] July 30 in 2010…
[5:14] I got my Franka.
[5:16] I got my Frank Stallone tattoo.
[5:18] Yeah.
[5:18] Right?
[5:19] Now, I already had an anchor on my arm.
[5:22] For when we went on our tall ship adventure.
[5:24] And then I put an F and an R before it.
[5:27] Here's the crazy thing that I forgot about.
[5:29] To make it a Franka.
[5:29] To make it a Franka.
[5:31] I always remembered that I got that tattoo to celebrate him coming out.
[5:36] I did not.
[5:37] What?
[5:37] In fact…
[5:39] July 30, I got the tattoo because it was his birthday.
[5:42] So we were playing Frank Stallone a lot.
[5:44] We were talking about Frank Stallone.
[5:46] But the idea to bring him out was months away.
[5:49] Right.
[5:49] So we were just playing the song a lot and it came up that it was Frank Stallone's birthday.
[5:53] So I got a Franken to actually celebrate his birthday before.
[5:57] Yeah.
[5:58] Before he came out.
[6:00] Well, the song Far From Over, we're playing it now.
[6:02] I was just in the background.
[6:03] We just absolutely loved this song.
[6:06] And I'm not saying it was a silly thing to do to get the Franks.
[6:09] No.
[6:09] But I was fascinated to see in the run sheet because I was like, oh, yeah, that was well before we bought him out.
[6:15] Yeah.
[6:15] I just got it for his birthday, which is far more, I can't say the same thing that he hasn't done anything like that for my birthday.
[6:23] So.
[6:24] Not to our knowledge.
[6:26] I'd be surprised.
[6:26] Yeah, same.
[6:28] But he lives in Hollywood.
[6:29] Yep.
[6:29] And that's what happens, you know.
[6:31] You go to these lengths, you permanently mark your body for a man, comes out, he plays one song, he disappears.
[6:36] Yep.
[6:37] No, but he's forever in our hearts and on my arm.
[6:40] So I was surprised to see that timeline.
[6:42] Here's something I did.
[6:44] I did want to play.
[6:46] 2008, July 30.
[6:49] I reckon this is before we went to Beijing.
[6:55] Ah, for the Olympics.
[6:55] We headed to Beijing for the Olympics.
[6:57] Yep.
[6:57] We weren't allowed to say the word Olympics.
[6:59] No.
[7:00] Because we were non-rights holders.
[7:02] No.
[7:02] I believe 3AW was the rights holders.
[7:05] So we were able to say we were there for all the action.
[7:08] And international tabloid sports.
[7:09] Yes, or we were there for the fun and the games happening.
[7:13] There was a controversy on whether we were allowed to say the games even.
[7:17] That's true.
[7:17] We couldn't say the games in Beijing.
[7:19] So we were just there for all the excitement.
[7:22] Of Beijing and anything that might be happening in Beijing at that time.
[7:26] The legal letter was so fascinating.
[7:29] And then even with regards to the sponsors we had in the show, we couldn't align some of those sponsors with going to the games in Beijing because they weren't official sponsors as well.
[7:39] It was a peculiar brief.
[7:41] Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't we going totally nuts in Beijing for Cadbury Boost Totally Nuts?
[7:46] Yeah.
[7:47] I think we were.
[7:48] I think we were over there going totally nuts for Cadbury Boost Totally Nuts.
[7:53] And we had winners come across go totally nuts.
[7:56] And we took them to Hooters.
[7:58] Do you remember that?
[8:00] A tradition of Chinese experience.
[8:03] You must try.
[8:04] There's Peking duck, of course.
[8:06] Or what about fried wings?
[8:09] What about wings and blue cheese sauce?
[8:11] I forgot we took them to Hooters here.
[8:12] We really did.
[8:13] Well, they'd been there for a while.
[8:15] We did ask, what would you like to eat?
[8:16] We said, what would you like?
[8:17] And they said, we've just had so much Chinese food.
[8:20] We were like, well, let's see if we can find fast food.
[8:22] And the closest was Hooters.
[8:23] And so we said to them, it was a husband and wife.
[8:26] And we went, well, this is your closest to wings.
[8:29] And they're like, yeah, we're up for it.
[8:30] Like, okay.
[8:31] I'm not sure how the station's going to feel, but we're taking the competition winners to hooters.
[8:35] Have a hoot in Beijing for Cadbury Boost.
[8:37] Totally nuts.
[8:39] Before we get to what we had played before we went to Beijing, because I think this is pre-Beijing.
[8:46] I might be wrong.
[8:47] Let's hear from the sponsor.
[8:48] Yep, and we'll be right back.
[8:50] Ando, I reckon pre-Beijing…
[8:55] We used to do a segment around this time that we love called Blast from the Past.
[8:59] Yes.
[9:00] Blast from the Past was a segment where you had to call a random number and immediately jump into the conversation as if you're an old mate.
[9:07] Yes.
[9:07] And convince that person that you were childhood friends with them.
[9:11] And we found the best way to do it was just pure confidence.
[9:14] Yep.
[9:14] So, you know, something along the lines of, G'day mate, it's, you know, it's Amy from high school.
[9:17] How are you?
[9:18] Because I know if someone called up and just said, Hey, sorry, how are you mate?
[9:22] It's Macca from high school.
[9:24] I would say, Okay.
[9:26] How are you, mate?
[9:27] Yeah.
[9:27] Good, good, good.
[9:28] As your brain tries to work out who Macca is.
[9:30] And you know the sweet spot is hitting someone who's about 40.
[9:33] Yeah.
[9:34] Who's like, Jesus, it was a long time ago, so I better just be polite here.
[9:38] After we'd achieved this for a while, we'd gone, yeah, this just seemed to work.
[9:42] It didn't – the level of difficulty was like, okay, we need to up the stakes.
[9:46] So then we started giving each other challenges.
[9:47] So it was like every call is like you've got to convince them you're from high school and then do X.
[9:52] And allow them to park your caravan at their house or something like that.
[9:55] I'm not sure whether this is me doing a blast from the past or it's you doing a blast from the past here, but what it has written down in the run sheet is it was pretending whoever's doing this had to be an athlete heading to the games –
[10:07] and asked this person for clean wee.
[10:10] Oh, wow.
[10:10] He did wee.
[10:11] I don't know.
[10:12] I can't remember who it was.
[10:13] I can't remember who it was, but I'd like to remember.
[10:18] The 30th of July, 2008.
[10:22] Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom
[10:38] We should point out, we do call these people back.
[10:40] Yeah.
[10:41] We've got a few emails going on.
[10:42] A lot of people going, oh, it's mean, it's mean.
[10:44] It is a bit mean.
[10:45] But when the song comes, there's always a sheepish phone call back.
[10:49] I think that was us.
[10:50] Sorry about that.
[10:50] Generally, they love it, to be honest.
[10:53] But, Haim, today's, not only do you have to convince whoever picks up that you are from their past.
[10:58] Yep.
[10:59] Today, I mean, I wanted to make it Olympic themed.
[11:02] Yeah.
[11:03] We're heading over to Beijing while the Olympics are on.
[11:06] Yeah.
[11:06] And so you are a participant, you're an athlete.
[11:10] Yes.
[11:11] You need a clean urine sample to take with you.
[11:15] Do I?
[11:15] Yeah.
[11:16] You don't want to use anyone in your team.
[11:17] You don't want to use anyone in your team.
[11:19] You don't want to make anyone close to you.
[11:21] So I'm a cheater?
[11:22] You're a cheater.
[11:23] Oh.
[11:23] You are a cheater.
[11:24] That is so un-Aussie, though.
[11:26] You're ringing up a friend to ask for some wee, some clean urine for a sample.
[11:30] Can I be a shooter?
[11:32] No.
[11:32] You can be whoever you want.
[11:33] I've always thought that I'd probably, out of all the things...
[11:35] Probably it's the most intimidating if you're asking for wee.
[11:39] Bear in mind, I can shoot you from a distance.
[11:41] Yeah, I just think because of my video game training, it's probably the most likely scenario that I'd ever get picked in the Olympics.
[11:47] It is similar to Duck Hunt, I'd imagine.
[11:49] So you ready to go?
[11:50] Convince someone?
[11:51] That's not easy.
[11:51] Well, I don't think it is, but that's why I picked it.
[11:54] If they give it, it's an Australian.
[11:56] They're aiding cheating.
[11:56] All right, doesn't matter.
[11:58] Alright 589 is my three numbers 703 703 Giggling Ben Giggling Ben puts in the first four Good luck The athlete The shooter Hello Oh yeah g'day Who's that?
[12:11] Angela Hey it's Sam Willis here From back in high school How are you going?
[12:15] Sam Willis Samuel Willis Back in high school?
[12:18] What from the Cods Grove?
[12:19] Yeah And we finished What year did you go there?
[12:22] Oh, Jesus.
[12:23] I left when I was in year 10, so I don't know what that works out to be.
[12:26] Well, how old are you?
[12:28] Well, I'm 44 now.
[12:30] Well, you'd remember my sister then, Sarah Harris.
[12:33] I do remember your sister.
[12:34] You do?
[12:35] Yeah, yeah, of course I do.
[12:37] I was obviously friends with her, but I did know of you because obviously it's not a huge school.
[12:44] No.
[12:44] Do you know what?
[12:45] Do you remember?
[12:45] I think I might have DJed at your dance.
[12:49] I didn't go to the Grade 10 leaders dinner.
[12:51] I wouldn't wear a dress.
[12:52] Yeah, no, that's right.
[12:54] No, Sarah mentioned something about that years and years ago.
[12:55] That's right.
[12:56] You had the, it was a bit of a moral stand there, wasn't it?
[13:00] Yeah, I had to wear a dress when I was very navy.
[13:02] Yeah.
[13:03] Didn't want to wear a dress.
[13:04] I remember that.
[13:05] You always had a bit of fire in your belly, didn't you?
[13:06] Hmm, still have.
[13:08] Yeah, great memories.
[13:09] Hey, you're probably getting a bit sick of reading about me all the time in the school newsletters, are you?
[13:14] No, never got one ever since I left high school.
[13:16] What, 15 years ago?
[13:17] Yeah, no, they send out the old Cosgrove communicator.
[13:20] Just a little bit of an update on what everyone's doing.
[13:23] No.
[13:24] Well, I was going to say, I mean, if you've read the newsletter, you've probably seen that I've made the Olympic team.
[13:29] No.
[13:30] Right, yeah, no, I'm in the 25-metre trap shooting.
[13:33] Very good.
[13:34] Yeah, yeah.
[13:35] Congratulations or whatever you say.
[13:37] Yeah, no, thanks very much.
[13:38] Thanks very much.
[13:39] I'm a little bit wrapped.
[13:40] Obviously, we head off to Beijing next week.
[13:42] Yeah.
[13:43] But that's kind of the reason I'm calling.
[13:45] All right.
[13:48] We've got to do these sort of these, you know, there's a lot of hoops we've got to jump through, obviously, as athletes.
[13:55] And just because we've got, you know, on top of all the forms and stuff we've got to fill out, we've got to do these, like, you know, samples and urine tests and stuff.
[14:02] And...
[14:03] Just don't seem to be able to go at the moment.
[14:07] So, look, is there any chance of perhaps grabbing a quick sample off you?
[14:12] I don't give a pardon?
[14:15] Just any chance of if you're not doing anything to Sarvo?
[14:17] I've sort of got to hand it in by tonight.
[14:19] So if you're around, do you reckon I could just grab a cheeky wee sample off you?
[14:25] Are you for real?
[14:27] Yeah, I just...
[14:28] I don't know what it is.
[14:29] I just can't go.
[14:29] I promise I'm clean.
[14:32] As long as you reckon you'd be clean, there's probably no... Why would you want one of my food samples?
[14:37] I just...
[14:37] It'd take the load off.
[14:38] I've got so much stuff to do this afternoon, and on top of, you know, trying to drink all the water and stuff, it'd take a real load off.
[14:44] If you have to buy any soft drinks or anything, I'm happy to cover the cost.
[14:46] You know, no one's any the wiser.
[14:48] And I could probably just grab at the Sarvo later on, maybe about 6 o'clock.
[14:53] No way.
[14:53] I'm sorry.
[14:54] Really, while we're talking is like 20 mils.
[14:57] No.
[14:57] I've got to get in by tonight, Edge, and I just know for a fact I'm not going to be able to go.
[15:01] I'm not feeling it.
[15:02] Oh, I'm sorry.
[15:04] Sorry.
[15:04] You and Sarah, you're always, you know, you're good kids.
[15:08] Just thought you wouldn't mind just giving us a bit of cheeky wee.
[15:12] Well, I'm sorry I'm not pissing in the cup for nobody.
[15:14] Yeah.
[15:15] Unless I have to for a doctor, I'm sorry.
[15:17] Well, it sort of is for a doctor.
[15:19] I've got to give it to a doctor.
[15:20] Do you reckon you could squeeze out 20?
[15:23] I've just cleaned out probably 100, but I'm still not giving anyone my weight.
[15:26] Oh.
[15:27] I'm sorry.
[15:27] You're going to have to use someone else's.
[15:29] So where are we at, then, in terms of the we issue?
[15:33] Bit of a yes or a...
[15:35] Sorry.
[15:35] I can't.
[15:37] You can.
[15:37] You do every day.
[15:38] I mean, so you can.
[15:39] Well, that's it.
[15:41] I mean, physiologically, you can.
[15:43] It's just putting a cup in the way, isn't it?
[15:45] Mm.
[15:46] Take it as a yes?
[15:47] No.
[15:48] Take that as a yes?
[15:50] No.
[15:51] Hmm.
[15:52] All right, well, I guess I'll go the old Gatorade option and see if I pop that in the cup and hopefully they don't detect too much.
[15:59] Right.
[16:00] All right, Ange, good to catch up anyway.
[16:02] Okay.
[16:03] Take it easy.
[16:08] I mean, a long shot.
[16:10] A long shot, but I think you did pretty well.
[16:11] I mean, I also just love the old, yeah, I've got to hand it in by tonight.
[16:15] Like, it's homework.
