## Transcript

[0:02] A listener production.
[0:06] Wilhelm, this is our remembering project.
[0:08] Yep, where a random day of the year is selected and we look up the run sheets from all our shows from across the years to find any we did on that day.
[0:17] Over 20 years, that's about 2,500 shows and roughly 26,000 talk breaks.
[0:22] Today, we pick one.
[0:24] One talk break only and try to remember what happened based on what was written down on the run sheet from that day.
[0:29] As always, we've got podcast Mike with us here for any technical stuff.
[0:32] Hello.
[0:32] Mike, what date was randomly chosen today?
[0:35] It's the 4th of August.
[0:37] Okay, that's Andy's go then.
[0:38] Let's kick it off and find out what years Andy will take us back to and we'll see if we remember anything from those years.
[0:47] This is Hamish and Andy's Remembering Project.
[0:54] 4th of August, Ham, is a day where we do a lot of shows over the years.
[0:58] We do.
[0:59] 2008.
[1:01] It says on the run sheet that you saw a seeing eye dog that wasn't a Labrador.
[1:04] I don't think that would have happened.
[1:06] I think I did.
[1:09] Yeah.
[1:10] I actually do remember it.
[1:11] What kind of dog do you think it might have been?
[1:15] It's big.
[1:15] It might have been a Grudel or a... Are you sure you just didn't see a guy with sunglasses on?
[1:22] No, no.
[1:23] I know sometimes dogs can wear vests, but I think it had the solid handle.
[1:29] All right.
[1:30] Yeah, that changes things.
[1:31] So there's got to be non-labs because… Can you look that up for us, Mike?
[1:35] Yeah.
[1:35] Because I didn't listen back to this at all, but it just seemed to me again… There would be.
[1:41] What if you're blind with an allergy to Labradors or a severe dog allergy?
[1:45] They might use Labradoodles because they are low allergy.
[1:49] Or if you just want a seeing-eye dog that doesn't molt.
[1:52] Not that it would bother you.
[1:53] It would.
[1:54] Because your hair's getting up your nose.
[1:55] That's true.
[1:56] That's true.
[1:57] Golden retrievers can be as well, apparently.
[2:00] Could have been a retriever.
[2:01] They're very similar.
[2:01] They're pretty swappable, aren't they, with Labradors?
[2:04] Yeah.
[2:04] That's one or the other.
[2:05] I mean, I didn't think it was a sausage dog or anything like that.
[2:08] Although I'm sure.
[2:09] German shepherds and poodles?
[2:11] Poodles.
[2:11] Poodle.
[2:12] I think it was a type of poodle.
[2:15] Now I remember from 14 years ago.
[2:18] One fame.
[2:19] Yeah, it was a bike poodle.
[2:30] Yeah, just in the nick of time.
[2:34] In 2014, I claimed that I was tougher than Mick Gatto.
[2:38] Do you remember this?
[2:43] The level of dancing with death, at least my claim was a little safer.
[2:49] Mick Gatto, famous underworld figure in Melbourne.
[2:54] I went to, I'm not sure if I've ever told you the follow-up story to this, but I went to the ice hockey.
[2:59] It was Canada versus USA at Rod Laverine.
[3:02] And the story I would have told at the time is Mick Gatto was in the seat in front of me, in a row in front of me, and fireworks went off.
[3:10] And he flinched and kind of ducked.
[3:12] That's not a flinch.
[3:12] That's probably muscle memory from him waiting for his training to kick in.
[3:17] So I went, oh, yeah, I'm tougher than him because I didn't flinch.
[3:21] And then Beck and I were down the coast on a weekend like three weeks later and this car pulls up in the car park in Red Hill in the Morning Peninsula.
[3:31] And I was just getting towards my car and Mick Gatto gets out of the back.
[3:35] He was getting driven around.
[3:37] And he turns to me and he points to me.
[3:39] And I waved because I'm like, and he said, did the point and then turned his point into a summons.
[3:47] Come here.
[3:48] You would have flinched right in your pants.
[3:50] So Bec goes, I knew you shouldn't have told that story.
[3:55] So I'm like, okay.
[3:56] So I wander across and he goes, I hear you're telling people you're tougher than me.
[4:04] No, sir.
[4:06] I was like, oh, I just did a bit of a joke.
[4:10] I was just like, oh, yeah, just obviously not.
[4:16] I'm obviously not.
[4:18] And just a bit of a joke.
[4:20] I'll put my whole foot in my mouth right now if you want.
[4:23] I'll walk home with no pants on.
[4:24] I'll do whatever you want.
[4:27] And he said, I don't think you're tougher than me.
[4:29] And I said, no, I don't.
[4:30] I think that was the funniness.
[4:31] That was the funniness of it.
[4:32] He's like, all right, good.
[4:33] Get in the boot.
[4:36] No, I've already said I'm not.
[4:38] Well, we'll see.
[4:39] No, you win.
[4:40] You win.
[4:41] We've already seen.
[4:42] So, yes, that was the follow-up to that.
[4:44] And I don't reckon I ever told that on the radio because… You don't want the next bit.
[4:49] I hear you going around telling people's stories about how I correct you about being troubled.
[4:53] Please stop doing this.
[4:57] Yes.
[4:58] So, yeah.
[5:00] Here we put 2014.
[5:01] But all jokes aside, you do often talk about how he's a big pussy.
[5:06] You're always saying that.
[5:08] You're well known in our group for slandering him.
[5:10] I'm not Mr Gallagher.
[5:12] I'm not saying that.
[5:16] One of the things I think about the most of you, golf and that brag.
[5:18] Haim, it was a toss-up.
[5:22] Two huge moments happened on August 4th.
[5:26] Across different years.
[5:27] Different years, 2008 and 2009.
[5:33] The one I want to have a short little nod to is 2008 where we had the Daryl Braithmate competition.
[5:39] Oh, that was, I mean, ultimately disappointing.
[5:42] But it was a spectacular time where we both felt like we could be friends with Daryl Braithmate because we'd met Aussie music legend Daryl Braithmate a few times and it was getting to that stage and it would just, you know, who wouldn't want to say that you're a Daryl Braithmate?
[5:59] And for some reason, I can't remember why, we decided there could be only one.
[6:03] Well, what happened was he ordered a bike rack, I think, from roof carrier systems, which my brother-in-law now, I'm not sure he was back then.
[6:13] You've always had an association with the business.
[6:17] Yes.
[6:17] But at some point in the history, your brother-in-law was able to buy it.
[6:20] He's managing it back then and he sent me a photo saying, got Daryl Brave Mate's number because he had to put it down for the rack.
[6:29] Yep.
[6:29] And I was like, oh, great.
[6:32] I mean, wonderful if one of us could be mates with him.
[6:33] I think that's where it came about.
[6:35] So like The Bachelor, we invited Daryl to a pub.
[6:38] Yeah, I think we were doing this before The Bachelor was a show.
[6:42] Yeah.
[6:43] And so we set it up like this where we had three different… Events.
[6:48] Events.
[6:49] Disciplines.
[6:51] We had to both order a drink for him that we thought he might like.
[6:55] Yep.
[6:56] And then I think it was a quiz about his life.
[7:01] And then was it a gif?
[7:02] I can't remember.
[7:03] No, you put a best friend's bracelet in the drink.
[7:07] Yes.
[7:08] That's when I went, I think Andy's got this.
[7:10] He's thought about this a lot more than I have and he's brought stuff along the way.
[7:13] You had amazing recall and facts about him, though.
[7:17] Yeah, I'd crammed in the car.
[7:19] Which kind of got close to stalker.
[7:22] But the idea was that one of us would become a Daryl Braith mate and the other one would become a Daryl Braith acquaintance.
[7:29] Yeah.
[7:30] This was Daryl's decision.
[7:34] The 4th of August, 2008.
[7:38] I have been deciding ever since this started, Andy, when my friend mentioned to me that, you know, you and Hamish or you had mentioned something about a bike rack.
[7:48] And I thought, oh, I wonder what that was.
[7:51] And then I took more of an interest.
[7:52] And now we've gotten to this, the conclusion to try and work out.
[7:56] Who's going to win the spot?
[7:59] It's really, really hard.
[8:00] And I actually went to sleep last night thinking about it and I thought, should I just sever all my ties with both?
[8:08] Please, no.
[8:09] I dreamt of you as well.
[8:10] No, no.
[8:12] I don't think I will either.
[8:14] And I thought, or can I keep... And seeing how competitive you are in a professional sense, I thought maybe I can keep both.
[8:23] No, no.
[8:24] There can be only one, Daryl.
[8:25] Okay, really?
[8:26] Okay.
[8:27] Only one of us gets the title of Daryl Braithmate.
[8:30] Daryl Braithmate.
[8:31] It's a word.
[8:33] But I think I will go with Andy.
[8:39] It was just the... Can I ask why?
[8:44] I think the bike rack.
[8:46] I go back to that as well.
[8:50] Yes!
[8:51] Well, Jimmy Barnes, if you're listening, I would be interested in Barnes in Arms.
[8:55] Perhaps a new show between me and you.
[8:59] Farnham, what are you doing this weekend?
[9:01] I wish you'd have any.
[9:08] making someone speaking so serious about it too maybe I can have both no no no no why not
[9:21] I have a thing.
[9:22] What if you get into a new friendship group and you're like, you have to pick which of you she liked the best.
[9:27] Oh, come on, guys.
[9:28] I like all of you.
[9:29] No.
[9:29] Pick one.
[9:31] Come on.
[9:32] We've done all the events.
[9:36] It is a bit embarrassing, a bit heartbreaking, a bit confronting to hear my, you know, as you've had the news dealt to you, it's not you.
[9:46] You haven't been chosen.
[9:48] To with a choke in your throat.
[9:50] You're going to ask why?
[9:52] I mean, stop, mate.
[9:53] You're not going to get him on a technicality.
[9:55] You can't argue it on a count back.
[9:57] You don't get that on The Bachelor.
[9:59] I think I'll propose to Louisa.
[10:01] No.
[10:02] I'd like you to know.
[10:03] Explain.
[10:03] Talk it out.
[10:04] What about me?
[10:05] What about Michelle?
[10:06] Yeah, actually, now you mention it, maybe I'll propose it to you.
[10:11] Glad I asked.
[10:14] Amazing.
[10:15] One for us.
[10:16] Look, if it ever comes back up again this date, that's one for us to go back and listen to in full because it had me giggling just from that little bit.
[10:22] He was, I mean, amazing from both.
[10:24] Yeah.
[10:24] Those are the real rare moments where, like, nothing to promote, no...
[10:29] Like, it was always just so fun to have people on the show that would do stuff because it was just dumb fun.
[10:35] And what is bizarre, but he's kind of… He's honoured.
[10:40] He's honoured.
[10:40] He's honoured.
[10:42] He'll message Andy and he'll go, and of course pass it on to my acquaintance.
[10:46] He'll be like, if we ever do anything, he'll be like, please, I'm not mates with Hamish.
[10:50] Yeah.
[10:51] Pass it on to him because we're just officially acquaintances.
[10:54] At the time, we exchanged numbers, Daryl and I. Hamish was left out and he to this day texts me but always asks me to pass on regards to Hamish.
[11:04] As you would an acquaintance.
[11:05] And I just find it so funny that he's honoured this stupid thing for 12 years or something.
[11:12] Anyway, Hamish.
[11:14] I mean, obviously, something pretty massive must have happened for us not to want to reveal deeper.
[11:18] Yeah, true, true.
[11:19] I mean, I'm sitting here going, I can't believe that was the side note for this episode.
[11:24] It's because on August 4th, 2009, it was the day that the bucket that hadn't spun, the KFC bucket, they used to, people, if you're just new to this show, back in the day, most KFCs,
[11:40] had a motorized large bucket outside.
[11:44] The way the Golden Arches would stand on a plinth, a big pole, they would have a bucket that would spin.
[11:50] They now have an off-kilter static bucket, a lot of them, a lot of KFCs.
[11:55] Most of them just have a KFC sign.
[11:57] You can see stationary buckets around, but there was a particular bucket that had spun.
[12:02] Mm-hmm.
[12:03] And had stopped.
[12:04] And there was a groundswell of support on the show to make the bucket spin.
[12:08] How can we get this bucket spinning again?
[12:09] Because it stood for so much more than that, Amanda.
[12:13] It stood for let's not let tradition slip.
[12:16] Let's not let the good times die.
[12:18] Let's see if we can turn back the clock and capture the good times and the bucket span.
[12:23] Let's take a break.
[12:24] And then we'll tackle them after this.
[12:27] Great stuff.
[12:27] The town was gimpy.
[12:29] Yeah.
[12:29] The only other note here on the run sheet is we're talking to Klaus, who I didn't remember who that was.
[12:34] No.
[12:34] It says he was the bucket repairman.
[12:38] Great.
[12:38] So he got the whole thing going on.
[12:40] Couldn't have done it without him, obviously.
[12:41] Yeah.
[12:42] I don't know how long this piece of audio goes for, but I smell a classic Hamish and Andy, huge buildup.
[12:51] The 4th of August, 2009.
[12:55] Hamish and Andy, and welcome to the Hamish and Andy show for the first time if you've just tuned in, and congratulations because you're about to hear history.
[13:03] Yeah, if it feels like you're somehow trapped in a book, don't worry, it's a history book.
[13:07] Exactly.
[13:08] And we've planned on being here.
[13:10] Haim, I feel like we'll listen back to this broadcast in 20 years' time and it'll be just as important as that of the moon landing.
[13:16] Mm-hmm.
[13:17] And just as historical.
[13:18] And they didn't even bother broadcasting the moon landing.
[13:21] Kind of.
[13:23] A bit of an audio grab then back to regular programming.
[13:24] Exactly.
[13:25] Exactly.
[13:26] We've covered this heaps better.
[13:29] They didn't use Klaus.
[13:30] And he was around.
[13:31] He was there.
[13:32] Yep.
[13:33] We are about to set in motion what I hope will be a symbolic gesture for the whole world.
[13:39] The bucket that once spun out the front of the KFC in Gympie.
[13:43] Giant bucket.
[13:44] Size of a VW Polo.
[13:45] Torn down, refurbished, rebuilt.
[13:48] Smooth engine put in it.
[13:49] Yep.
[13:50] And it is just waiting.
[13:51] It's itching to spin again.
[13:53] And B, what I believe to be the only spinning bucket
[13:56] on mainland Australia, which will send a ray of hope throughout the nation that other buckets may spin again.
[14:02] Other KFCs that don't even have buckets anymore.
[14:04] It's got the Colonel's face on it, so that's exciting.
[14:06] That's a stamp of approval.
[14:06] Yeah, exactly.
[14:08] You could almost accept it as currency.
[14:10] You've got the Queen's face on coins and someone slightly more important, the Colonel, on the buckets.
[14:15] It caught us on the hop.
[14:16] We only found out 10 a.m. this morning.
[14:18] Didn't think this was happening until next week.
[14:19] No.
[14:20] And so we've been flipping it, wigging it a little bit.
[14:23] That's how secret this whole project's been.
[14:24] Even KFC didn't tell us.
[14:26] No.
[14:26] They tested it last night.
[14:28] And it obviously went global, Ham.
[14:31] I've been on the phone all day.
[14:32] You were wicking out.
[14:33] You didn't know what was happening.
[14:35] And you could just hear sort of through the double-glazed glass occasionally me just going...
[14:41] He was doing a lot of the work today.
[14:42] Yeah, but look, celebrity people, celebrities wanted to get, are all over this great globe, and wanted to get behind it, and I recorded a few of them.
[14:52] Of course, the people deserve to know how their hard work went off with some of the most influential people in our society.
[14:58] Well, here it is for you.
[15:00] Hi everyone, Barack Obama here.
[15:02] Little known fact about me, my middle name is Buckets and my porn name would be Dusty Manoring after my first pet and street I lived in.
[15:11] Just before lunch, pop sensation Kylie Minogue called through.
[15:15] She had these warm words about how the bucket had inspired her in her own career.
[15:22] Hey fans, Kylie Minogue here.
[15:23] A lot of people don't know this, but this spinning KFC bucket was the inspiration for one of my songs.
[15:29] It was called Hey You Up There on the Pole.
[15:31] I really, really like you.
[15:32] It wasn't a great one, never made the album, but still got it on cassette if anyone wants to give me a buzz.
[15:40] Anyway, my undies are in shop, so get a pair of them.
[15:42] See ya.
[15:43] And gardening guru Don Burke was also keen to pass on his well wishes to the people.
[15:49] Good afternoon, fellas.
[15:50] Don't often listen to FM.
[15:51] Don Burke here, television legend and just all around top bloke.
[15:55] I'm actually interested in the plants at the bottom of the pole.
[15:59] What is that?
[15:59] Is it a hibiscus?
[16:00] Is there a fern?
[16:00] Did I see a fern down there?
[16:02] I love ferns.
[16:02] I'd love to get my face right in them.
[16:04] I faded him down.
[16:05] He may well still be talking.
[16:08] Still, celebrities are really behind this revolution.
[16:12] They certainly are.
[16:13] Good work, Ando.
[16:14] Oh, thank you.
[16:16] And it's with great pleasure now that we can cross live to Gympie in Queensland.
[16:22] After having the president on the phone.
[16:24] And Klaus is there.
[16:26] Wow.
[16:27] Klaus, can you hear us?
[16:30] Klaus.
[16:32] Well, Klaus, are you there?
[16:34] Hello.
[16:34] Hello.
[16:35] I can't tell you.
[16:36] For a second, we thought you'd turned into a screaming 16-year-old girl.
[16:40] We can hear the sirens in the background.
[16:42] I hear the fire engine going on.
[16:44] I feel it again.
[16:45] What is the atmosphere like in Gympie, Klaus?
[16:47] Yes.
[16:48] Yeah, there's a hell of a crowd here now.
[16:50] A lot of people are excited.
[16:51] They're wondering if the bucket's going to spin or not.
[16:53] Well, Klaus, you are the man in all your years.
[16:56] I mean, you're now a friend of the show.
[16:59] How many buckets would you say that you've been involved in over the years?
[17:03] Probably about eight or ten.
[17:05] Oh, wow.
[17:05] Nearly.
[17:06] Those are big numbers.
[17:07] Nearly a tenth of a century there.
[17:10] So that is some numbers.
[17:12] And Klaus, would you say this is the most prestigious bucket that you've been involved in?
[17:19] Most certainly.
[17:20] And the publicity you guys have caused was doing, it was unbelievable.
[17:23] In fact, right now, I need to tell you that, there's five Gordon children in West Australia in Perth, my grandchildren.
[17:31] Their mother's taken them out of school early because of the time difference, just to listen to the show on the occasion for the bucket to turn.
[17:39] Klaus, Klaus, I don't think they'll ever need to go back to school after hearing this, because it's the greatest thing that you could ever learn from a spinning bucket.
[17:47] Klaus.
[17:49] I would like to see the alphabet scaled back to just three letters, and you know what they are.
[17:55] Hey, Klaus, I mean, you've fixed a lot of buckets in your time.
[17:59] You've seen them start spinning again.
[18:02] And obviously we found out about your handiwork through your daughter calling and saying that you were the man that fixed buckets in the area.
[18:09] Did you normally have this size crowd when you saw a bucket spin again?
[18:13] Negative.
[18:14] We used to be just air service because normally you have nobody there.
[18:17] Nobody there, but now you've got a fire truck, you've got sirens going off and a crowd.
[18:22] At the moment, they're very quiet.
[18:23] They're waiting for you guys to give us a go.
[18:25] Whoa.
[18:26] Class, do you think we could organise some sort of countdown from 10?
[18:29] Yes, we're going to do that now.
[18:31] Okay, people have driven from all over Queensland.
[18:34] Yeah.
[18:35] We're at the countdown now.
[18:38] Klaus knows what he's doing.
[18:39] I don't know how to get in Klaus's way.
[18:40] You've got your finger on your bucket.
[18:41] You've got the finger on the button, mate.
[18:43] The bucket is...
[18:45] It will be spinning.
[18:46] Fingers crossed.
[18:48] Klaus, you're in charge.
[18:49] What's started, mate?
[18:51] Go on.
[18:52] Six.
[18:53] This is like Times Square.
[18:55] Three, two, one.
[18:59] Klaus, what's happening?
[19:01] The bucket is spinning!
[19:02] It's spinning!
[19:05] What does it look like, Klaus?
[19:07] Does it look beautiful, Klaus?
[19:09] There's sirens going off in the background.
[19:12] Klaus, tell us what it looks like.
