[0:02] Speaker 1: Bloomberg Audio Studios.
[0:04] Speaker 2: Podcasts. Radio. News.
[0:08] Speaker 3: Welcome to our Bloomberg Television and Bloomberg Radio audiences around
[0:11] Speaker 3: the world. We are joined by NVIDIA CEO Jensen Wan
[0:14] Speaker 3: and MediaTek CEO Rick Tsai, who joins us from Taiwan
[0:18] Speaker 3: late in his evening. The idea is you can take
[0:20] Speaker 3: custom silicon, right, XPU, and just plug it into any
[0:23] Speaker 3: GPU-based architecture, share the memory, the networking. Jensen, could we
[0:28] Speaker 3: start with you, please, and just ask you to explain
[0:30] Speaker 3: the technology agreement here?
[0:33] Speaker 4: Today, we're announcing a big partnership. We've already had a
[0:37] Speaker 4: big partnership with MediaTek. Today, we're going to make it
[0:39] Speaker 4: a lot bigger. It started with us working on recognizing
[0:43] Speaker 4: that MediaTek makes the world's best SOCs. And we integrated
[0:47] Speaker 4: the NVIDIA NVLink chip-to-chip interface to Mediatek so that whenever
[0:52] Speaker 4: there's an SOC for Mediatek, we can connect it to
[0:55] Speaker 4: NVIDIA's GPU. And what came out of that first endeavor
[0:59] Speaker 4: is this project called DGX Spark. This little computer is
[1:03] Speaker 4: an incredible computer.
[1:04] Speaker 1: It's one petaflops.
[1:05] Speaker 4: It allows you to run an advanced agentic AI right
[1:10] Speaker 4: on your desk instead of having to run it in
[1:13] Speaker 4: the cloud.
[1:13] Speaker 1: Well, today what we're.
[1:14] Speaker 4: Going to do is we're going to expand our partnership
[1:16] Speaker 4: so that we do multiple generations of this. This processor
[1:20] Speaker 4: is going to also be the foundation of the revolutionary
[1:23] Speaker 4: new computer that's coming from Microsoft and ourselves, a reinvention
[1:28] Speaker 4: of the Windows PC for the age of agents. Now,
[1:31] Speaker 4: the second thing that we're doing is that MediaTek is
[1:34] Speaker 4: incredibly successful building XPUs, and we're going to connect our
[1:39] Speaker 4: NVLink Fusion, NVLink system, so that NVIDIA's scale-up NVLink system,
[1:45] Speaker 4: which has revolutionized AI, and our Spectrum X switches, our
[1:50] Speaker 4: entire networking franchise, system chassis to MediaTek. So when they
[1:58] Speaker 4: win projects, it brings along NVIDIA networking. However, you also
[2:04] Speaker 4: know that NVIDIA is already in every cloud and every
[2:07] Speaker 4: data center. And so whenever there's a MediaTek XPU, we'll
[2:11] Speaker 4: be able to connect it right into that data center
[2:14] Speaker 4: in a really seamless way. And then, of course, we're
[2:16] Speaker 4: partnering in robotic systems like autonomous vehicles. So you know
[2:22] Speaker 4: that AI has revolutionized how we do computing, and we're
[2:26] Speaker 4: going to work with MediaTek in all of these different areas.
[2:29] Speaker 1: When they win, we have an opportunity to sell a
[2:31] Speaker 1: lot more.
[2:32] Speaker 4: When we win, they have an opportunity to sell a
[2:34] Speaker 4: lot more.
[2:36] Speaker 3: Rick, the ASIC customer... builds their own accelerator. They don't
[2:39] Speaker 3: need to reinvent the rest of the architecture. But from
[2:43] Speaker 3: MediaTek's perspective, Rick, I think it's worth saying, what is
[2:45] Speaker 3: the pitch to your ASIC customers on the value of
[2:48] Speaker 3: doing this with NVIDIA through NVLink?
[2:52] Speaker 2: As I said, thank you for the opportunity. And I
[2:57] Speaker 2: also want to really thank NVIDIA and Jensen for having
[3:03] Speaker 2: the confidence in MediaTek. And for us, I believe, if
[3:08] Speaker 2: you look at the whole AI computing stack, all the
[3:13] Speaker 2: way from the very top of the ASIC, from the
[3:20] Speaker 2: hyperscalers to the mid-end of the enterprise data centers and
[3:27] Speaker 2: new clouds, to what Jensen just described, to the desktop
[3:32] Speaker 2: supercomputers for the AI, applications. You see, I think the collaboration,
[3:40] Speaker 2: the partnership we're having with NVIDIA with our XPU capability,
[3:46] Speaker 2: NVIDIA's NVLink Fusion will enable throughout this computing stack customers
[3:54] Speaker 2: The important thing for this era of AI is it's
[3:59] Speaker 2: incredibly fast changing. So it's absolutely critical that we can together,
[4:06] Speaker 2: we can enable the customers throughout the stack to build
[4:11] Speaker 2: the data center, to scale with high speed. Well, as
[4:17] Speaker 2: Jensen always like to say, speed of light. And we
[4:21] Speaker 2: work with our customers with tremendous flexibility. So that's part,
[4:27] Speaker 2: I think, the essence of the collaboration partnership with NVIDIA.
[4:33] Speaker 3: Rick, you had said that your AI chip business would
[4:36] Speaker 3: be about $ 2 billion this year, but would accelerate to
[4:39] Speaker 3: get about 15% of an addressable market of $ 80 billion
[4:44] Speaker 3: next year. Does this arrangement with Jensen and NVIDIA help
[4:47] Speaker 3: you accelerate the growth in that business?
[4:51] Speaker 2: We certainly expect that to happen. But it will take
[4:54] Speaker 2: a little time because we're now getting started building, I think,
[5:00] Speaker 2: building Jensen's latest NVLink version into that chassis that he
[5:06] Speaker 2: just mentioned. I think that chassis will provide the potential
[5:11] Speaker 2: customers with tremendous vehicle to enable a fast time to market.
[5:18] Speaker 2: And that's the key. for today's world. Fast time to market.
[5:25] Speaker 3: Jensen, you're making a $ 3. 5 billion investment in MediaTek through
[5:29] Speaker 3: the purchase of convertible bonds.
[5:31] Speaker 2: Why?
[5:33] Speaker 1: Well, this is one of the largest partnerships we have.
[5:37] Speaker 1: We're building, as I mentioned, multiple.
[5:39] Speaker 4: Generations of edge AI and PC chips. And Our chips
[5:45] Speaker 4: are GPUs, and they're connected to die-to-die with MediaTek's SoCs.
[5:52] Speaker 4: And so they're working with us on multiple generations of
[5:54] Speaker 4: SoCs so that we can connect our GPUs to them.
[5:57] Speaker 4: This new product line we call DGX Spark and then
[6:01] Speaker 4: RTX Spark for PCs. is a major investment for us.
[6:04] Speaker 4: We have a major commitment to the entire PC industry.
[6:08] Speaker 4: And so this partnership expands upon that. This partnership, this
[6:11] Speaker 4: investment also formalizes the partnership that we have in building
[6:16] Speaker 4: AI factories. As you know, today's AI factories is not
[6:19] Speaker 4: just the GPU. It's GPUs and scale up switches and
[6:23] Speaker 4: scale out switches. The amount of networking necessary, there are
[6:27] Speaker 4: five different types of networking necessary to build out an
[6:30] Speaker 4: entire factory, not to mention the NVIDIA Vera CPUs. And
[6:35] Speaker 4: so this partnership allows MediaTek to plug directly into that
[6:41] Speaker 4: entire factory.
[6:42] Speaker 1: AI factory platform.
[6:45] Speaker 4: And so wherever we have NVIDIA in the cloud already,
[6:49] Speaker 4: which we're in just about every cloud, we now have
[6:51] Speaker 4: the opportunity using exactly the same AI factory architecture to
[6:56] Speaker 4: plug in MediaTek XPUs. So this is a massive engineering
[7:01] Speaker 4: alignment between our two companies. We've been working with MediaTek
[7:06] Speaker 4: for a long time. I've known Rick, for 25 years.
[7:11] Speaker 4: This is a relationship that is really deeply grounded on trust,
[7:14] Speaker 4: but we have so much confidence in this partnership that
[7:17] Speaker 4: we really wanted to make an investment into MediaTek. Of course,
[7:21] Speaker 4: MediaTek is already immensely profitable, and they're incredibly successful already,
[7:26] Speaker 4: so that the opportunity to be able to make this
[7:28] Speaker 4: investment is a great pleasure for us.
[7:31] Speaker 3: Jensen, you've already fielded some questions about circular financing and
[7:35] Speaker 3: you and Colette, your CFO on the call, were pretty
[7:37] Speaker 3: clear that you see it differently to how the world interprets.
[7:40] Speaker 3: In this case, you know, you are making investment into
[7:43] Speaker 3: a partner as opposed to a direct customer. Why is
[7:47] Speaker 3: this or is this not circular financing?
[7:50] Speaker 4: Well, this is not circular because obviously they do their
[7:54] Speaker 4: own business and we do our own business. And MediaTek's
[7:59] Speaker 4: already incredibly profitable, incredibly successful. They are the world's best
[8:05] Speaker 4: SOC maker. They make more SOCs than any company in
[8:08] Speaker 4: the world. It's a great pleasure for us to invest
[8:11] Speaker 4: in a technology company in Taiwan. It's a great pleasure
[8:14] Speaker 4: for us to invest in MediaTek. This is going to
[8:17] Speaker 4: turn out, of course, the investment is grounded on a
[8:20] Speaker 4: deep partnership that's going to.
[8:22] Speaker 1: Be multiple years.
[8:23] Speaker 4: The roadmap that we're executing on right now, it's not
[8:30] Speaker 4: one or two years.
[8:30] Speaker 1: It's a decade long.
[8:32] Speaker 4: And so this partnership is extremely important to us, and
[8:36] Speaker 4: we want to make sure that we demonstrate every opportunity,
[8:39] Speaker 4: take every opportunity to demonstrate the importance of it, the
[8:43] Speaker 4: seriousness by which we take it, the confidence we have
[8:45] Speaker 4: in the partnership, and the investment that we're making here
[8:48] Speaker 4: demonstrates that. But ultimately, this is going to be a
[8:52] Speaker 4: phenomenal investment for us, and it's going to generate incredible returns.
[8:56] Speaker 1: I have every confidence.
[8:58] Speaker 3: Rick, in July, MediaTek said that it would use its
[9:02] Speaker 3: bond program, $ 5 billion of dollar bonds, basically to support
[9:06] Speaker 3: and grow supply chain. Earlier in our conversation, you talked
[9:10] Speaker 3: about the benefit of working with NVIDIA on MVLink Fusion
[9:14] Speaker 3: is speed to market. What do you plan to do
[9:16] Speaker 3: with the proceeds? And when you talk about supply chain,
[9:20] Speaker 3: do you need to do more on Taiwanese suppliers or U.S.
[9:23] Speaker 3: suppliers in the context of this relationship?
[9:27] Speaker 2: I sent the.
[9:29] Speaker 2: Suddenly, well, back in the end of July, we were
[9:36] Speaker 2: not able to discuss the strategic investment part of the bond.
[9:42] Speaker 2: So the proceeds, I think, will be for multiple purposes,
[9:48] Speaker 2: supply chain definitely being one of them. And the supply
[9:51] Speaker 2: chain is a global, I mean, wherever needed to enhance
[9:56] Speaker 2: and enable the customers But on the other hand, I think,
[10:01] Speaker 2: as Jensen said so eloquently, the investment, that Mediatek is
[10:08] Speaker 2: a tech company, it's a very strong tech company, and
[10:12] Speaker 2: we will definitely invest, if anything, more into the technology
[10:19] Speaker 2: in our capability to make the ASIC chip in the
[10:25] Speaker 2: IP for interconnects in advanced packaging. I think the The
[10:32] Speaker 2: key here is really the collaboration agreements that we have
[10:37] Speaker 2: built and expanded with NVIDIA as described in our press release.
[10:43] Speaker 2: Those are the key things. And the proceeds will basically
[10:47] Speaker 2: go in to make those things happen better and further.
[10:52] Speaker 3: Jensen, on the earnings call last week, you talked about
[10:55] Speaker 3: with confidence, right? that the GPU-based architecture has superior economics.
[11:01] Speaker 3: You were talking about that in the context of the
[11:03] Speaker 3: Frontier Labs, largely because you were asked about custom silicon.
[11:08] Speaker 3: The simple terms of it is that MVLink Fusion just
[11:11] Speaker 3: makes it easy to take XPU and just drop it
[11:14] Speaker 3: into the data center. That would show that NVIDIA does
[11:18] Speaker 3: see XPU coming into the market. Just the difference of
[11:23] Speaker 3: your thinking this week to what you outlined last week.
[11:27] Speaker 4: I see XPUs in the market. It's not coming into
[11:31] Speaker 4: the market. It's in the market. Look, an XPU is
[11:35] Speaker 4: a specialized chip. NVIDIA's GPU is a general purpose accelerator.
[11:42] Speaker 4: We accelerate the entire lifecycle of AI from data processing,
[11:48] Speaker 4: which data processing to pre-training to post-training to agentic AI inferencing.
[11:54] Speaker 4: We accelerate every single AI model in the world from
[11:58] Speaker 4: closed models, every closed model, every open model, video models
[12:03] Speaker 4: and language models, biological models and physics models and robotics models.
[12:07] Speaker 4: We literally accelerate every single area of AI. That explains
[12:15] Speaker 4: why it is that we are the most fungible and
[12:17] Speaker 4: the most durable and therefore the most rentable GPU, the
[12:21] Speaker 4: most rentable computer infrastructure in the world.
[12:24] Speaker 1: We're in every cloud. We're on-prem. We're at the edge.
[12:27] Speaker 4: And so we're able to address markets that, frankly, nobody
[12:32] Speaker 4: else can because of the architecture of our company and
[12:35] Speaker 4: the entire full-stack AI factory platform that we have. However,
[12:41] Speaker 4: there are customers, and they're very important partners of mine
[12:44] Speaker 4: as well, customers of Rick's and partners of mine. These
[12:48] Speaker 4: are incredibly important to us. If they would like to
[12:51] Speaker 4: put a specialized XPU into a data center, why not
[12:56] Speaker 4: make it easier for them to connect it to the
[12:59] Speaker 4: NVIDIA infrastructure? And so this way, if they would like
[13:02] Speaker 4: to build us something, we make it easier for them
[13:05] Speaker 4: to build it, and we benefit as well. It makes
[13:08] Speaker 4: it easier for everybody involved. And so it's not a
[13:12] Speaker 4: question about if one or the other. There's no question
[13:16] Speaker 4: NVIDIA's footprint is the largest. There's no question we're growing
[13:19] Speaker 4: share in closed models and open models. We're growing share
[13:25] Speaker 4: across the entire AI opportunity. And so we're not intimidated
[13:32] Speaker 4: by this. We're in fact welcoming it and opening our
[13:36] Speaker 4: platform so that they could connect XPUs into it.
[13:39] Speaker 3: We're live on Bloomberg Television and on Bloomberg Radio, and
[13:42] Speaker 3: we're speaking with NVIDIA CEO Jensen Wang and MediaTek CEO
[13:45] Speaker 3: Rick Tsai, who's joining us from Taiwan late in his evening. Now, Rick,
[13:50] Speaker 3: I guess that the answer is no, but is there
[13:53] Speaker 3: a case study of an ASIC customer that you can
[13:56] Speaker 3: take us through and how you think the ASIC customer
[13:59] Speaker 3: is going to respond to this announcement this morning, how
[14:02] Speaker 3: they might move in reaction to the idea that MVLink
[14:06] Speaker 3: Fusion provides an opportunity for them to move faster?
[14:13] Speaker 2: We are engaging with some customers that we are actually
[14:17] Speaker 2: kind of a co-go-to-market with our partners, NVIDIA. And I
[14:24] Speaker 2: think the announcement today will further strengthen their confidence in
[14:28] Speaker 2: the relationship with this strong bond between NVIDIA and the
[14:32] Speaker 2: media tech. So they know they can count on us.
[14:38] Speaker 2: if they go for this MVLink Fusion business model. Look,
[14:45] Speaker 2: as Jensen said just now, I mean, there are different
[14:49] Speaker 2: needs from different customers. And the AI, market, computer market
[14:55] Speaker 2: is enormous. Enormous. So there are different customers needing obviously
[15:01] Speaker 2: smaller amount of computing power. But they do want to
[15:08] Speaker 2: have some differentiation in their own offering. And so I
[15:13] Speaker 2: think this MVLink Fusion, again, will accelerate their go-to-market capability.
[15:20] Speaker 2: That will be beneficial for them. for NVIDIA and for MediaTek.
[15:25] Speaker 4: Jensen, what I find really interesting- And in a lot
[15:28] Speaker 4: of ways, Ed, this whole thing started because of customer requests.
[15:33] Speaker 4: As you know, there are already customers that have committed
[15:36] Speaker 4: to NVLink Fusion.
[15:37] Speaker 1: Building the XPU is very, very hard, and there's no
[15:40] Speaker 1: question about that.
[15:41] Speaker 4: And with the partnership with MediaTek, MediaTek can help customers
[15:45] Speaker 4: build amazing XPUs. However, inside an AI factory, it includes
[15:51] Speaker 4: five different types of networking technology.
[15:54] Speaker 1: Of course, the CPU.
[15:55] Speaker 4: And we now make it possible for all of that
[15:58] Speaker 4: to come together really easily. And so a lot of
[16:01] Speaker 4: customers are asking for this and they want to access
[16:04] Speaker 4: the MVLink. technology, because it's completely revolutionary. And it's incredibly
[16:10] Speaker 4: hard to do when we're in our sixth generation of
[16:12] Speaker 4: doing so. And so this is really, really driven by
[16:16] Speaker 4: customer request. And I think it makes a lot of sense.
[16:21] Speaker 4: And it's great for both of us.
[16:23] Speaker 3: Jensen, the part that we haven't talked about is MVHBM.
[16:26] Speaker 3: You were pretty clear that the bottleneck is still in memory,
[16:30] Speaker 3: pricing and supply. MVHBM, what's the pitch there on what
[16:35] Speaker 3: that allows an XPU-based architecture to do? A lot of
[16:39] Speaker 3: the specialized inference platforms might be SRAM-based, for example. And
[16:42] Speaker 3: I just want to throw this in, Jensen, as I may,
[16:44] Speaker 3: because no one's asked you for quite some time. What's
[16:47] Speaker 3: the sort of percentage or proportion of content of the
[16:50] Speaker 3: server design NVIDIA is now pushing on its latest Vera
[16:53] Speaker 3: Rubin generation platform and how that kind of changes in
[16:58] Speaker 3: this XPU case study where you have a hybrid AI
[17:01] Speaker 3: factory essentially?
[17:04] Speaker 4: Well, inside a gigawatt, if we were just to extrapolate,
[17:07] Speaker 4: in a gigawatt, Hopper was about $ 18 billion of economics
[17:12] Speaker 4: for NVIDIA per gigawatt.
[17:14] Speaker 1: Grace Blackwell is about $ 25 billion.
[17:18] Speaker 4: And the Vera Rubin generation, it's about 40 plus billion
[17:23] Speaker 4: dollars per gigawatt of total NVIDIA compute economics. And the
[17:29] Speaker 4: reason for that is because we've been expanding beyond the
[17:33] Speaker 4: GPU to one type of switch after another type of networking.
[17:38] Speaker 4: And now the amount of chips, there's like seven different
[17:41] Speaker 4: types of NVIDIA chips that has to go into an
[17:45] Speaker 4: AI factory.
[17:46] Speaker 1: An XPU would be a replacement of one of those.
[17:50] Speaker 4: My sense is that we'll continue to be in every
[17:53] Speaker 4: single cloud, we'll continue to be in every single AI factory.
[17:56] Speaker 4: Some of those racks might be augmented with XPUs. In
[18:02] Speaker 4: those cases, NVIDIA's networking, NVIDIA switching, NVIDIA CPUs would also
[18:07] Speaker 4: have an opportunity to participate.
[18:09] Speaker 1: And we make it easier for the customers.
[18:13] Speaker 4: To be able to extend out their AI factory using
[18:16] Speaker 4: exactly the same system architecture and networking architecture. In the
[18:20] Speaker 4: case of MediaTek, it allows MediaTek to offer an end-to-end
[18:25] Speaker 4: solution that is complete. That XPU otherwise would have to
[18:29] Speaker 4: go and solve NVLink switching problems, a whole bunch of
[18:32] Speaker 4: Nix problems, a whole bunch of Ethernet switching, scale-outs, scale-up,
[18:38] Speaker 4: scale across, scale in. There's so many different types of
[18:42] Speaker 4: networking technologies that have to come to bear, and we
[18:45] Speaker 4: offer the entire thing. So between us and MediaTek, if
[18:49] Speaker 4: a customer wants to build XPUs, they now have an
[18:52] Speaker 4: entire solution as well. And so our opportunity will continue
[18:57] Speaker 4: to grow in these AI factories.
[19:00] Speaker 3: Rick, very quickly, what's the biggest bottleneck for MediaTek right now?
[19:06] Speaker 2: I think supply chain does present challenges, you know, not
[19:13] Speaker 2: just HVM, go down to substrate, et cetera. But again,
[19:22] Speaker 2: being in Taiwan, in almost like a center of the
[19:26] Speaker 2: AI industry, infrastructure ecosystem really helps. And we also work
[19:34] Speaker 2: closely with NVIDIA as our customer too. But it's tough.
[19:39] Speaker 2: And I think I don't, I really see blue skies
[19:45] Speaker 2: in the future.
[19:46] Speaker 4: Now NVIDIA's networking ecosystem is now part of of MediaTek's
[19:51] Speaker 4: supply chain and MediaTek's XPU is part of our supply
[19:57] Speaker 4: chain and so in a lot of ways both of
[20:00] Speaker 4: us expanded our supply chain in this partnership and all
[20:04] Speaker 4: that it's early for me here we are I forgot
[20:07] Speaker 4: to answer your NVHBM question Our next generation HBM is
[20:12] Speaker 4: a custom HBM and the HBM stacks are built on
[20:17] Speaker 4: a NVIDIA custom base layer. And that base layer we've
[20:22] Speaker 4: extended to our partners, NVLink Fusion partners. And the reason
[20:27] Speaker 4: for that is because that NVHBM has to be stacked
[20:31] Speaker 4: with the XPU die into a co-op package. And that
[20:36] Speaker 4: co-op package and the MVF HBMs are incredibly complex. And
[20:41] Speaker 4: so we've extended that to MediaTek. We've extended it to
[20:46] Speaker 4: Amazon as well. And they're one of the first customers
[20:48] Speaker 4: and partners building it with us. And so this allows
[20:52] Speaker 4: us to aggregate all of our supply chain into something
[20:56] Speaker 4: that is much more, if you will, standard. And they'll
[21:00] Speaker 4: be able to benefit from our large install base and
[21:03] Speaker 4: our large supply chain, and we'll be able to benefit
[21:06] Speaker 4: from theirs.
[21:08] Speaker 3: NVIDIA CEO Jensen Wang, alongside MediaTek CEO Rick Tsai, NVIDIA
[21:12] Speaker 3: making a $ 3. 5 billion investment into MediaTek and sharing on
[21:17] Speaker 3: the data center architecture.
