Things got so bad Billy Martin had to lead an armed charge! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

[0:28] Speaker 3: a pop up, right, and they have all this, like,
[0:30] Speaker 3: you know, free hot dogs and burgers and what have you. Okay,
[0:34] Speaker 3: this was sent to us by a couple different people
[0:37] Speaker 3: just because they know that you and I, particularly you
[0:39] Speaker 3: love Grillo's Pickles.
[0:41] Speaker 2: Yes.
[0:41] Speaker 3: But then as I'm looking at it, then it said
[0:43] Speaker 3: Grillo's Pickles University, because like, the pop up's not ridiculous,
[0:48] Speaker 3: that's just cool.
[0:48] Speaker 2: Yeah, this is cool.
[0:49] Speaker 3: I'll give Rills Pickles University. And it said we're getting

[1:22] Speaker 3: is Grillo's Pickles University and on their Instagram they just
[1:26] Speaker 3: said it's coming soon. Click to stay informed. But like,
[1:31] Speaker 3: what is it?

[1:34] Speaker 2: you get a major in picklemongering.
[1:36] Speaker 3: I don't know. But you can sign up on the

[1:42] Speaker 2: Okay, so this is just like website like gaming.
[1:46] Speaker 3: Guess, but the Pickle University. I don't know. I just zaren,
[1:51] Speaker 3: I just don't.
[1:52] Speaker 2: Know now see listener. Aaron Mumford wrote to me personally
[1:57] Speaker 2: to warn me that you may be coming with so grillos,
[2:01] Speaker 2: pickles and madness at me, and I appreciate it. Thank you,
[2:04] Speaker 2: Aaron for the warning. The mashup protection, But it turns
[2:08] Speaker 2: out it wasn't the one you.
[2:09] Speaker 3: Threw at was it like a perfume.
[2:11] Speaker 2: It was a pickled gayo.
[2:13] Speaker 3: Oh no, I have that in my refrigerator.
[2:14] Speaker 2: Yeah, there you go, legit, I do.
[2:20] Speaker 3: But yeah, apparently there's a perfume or what have you.
[2:22] Speaker 3: But anyway, the university that just struck me as ridiculous.
[2:25] Speaker 3: And on that note, I bid you ridiculous.
[2:28] Speaker 2: Okay, ridiculous. Well, if you got a second, I do
[2:31] Speaker 2: you do nice? Okay? Do you remember? Well, you probably
[2:34] Speaker 2: don't remember, but if you were like seeing like in
[2:36] Speaker 2: videos and references and like sports highlights about how professional
[2:40] Speaker 2: sports in the US in the nineteen seventies had this
[2:44] Speaker 2: super high level of outrageousness and just general silliness.
[2:47] Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't remember it.
[2:48] Speaker 2: Personally, I think the San Diego chicken.
[2:51] Speaker 3: Okay, yeah, you know what I mean.
[2:52] Speaker 2: You're familiar with the San Diego chicken, right, like Tommylesortait exactly,
[2:58] Speaker 2: so you've seen images of the seventies. That's my idea. Okay,
[3:01] Speaker 2: Now for today's story, let's omit the chicken and in
[3:04] Speaker 2: his place will sub in a cheap beer promotion in
[3:07] Speaker 2: the Midwest. Okay, and instead of San Diego, we'll relocate
[3:11] Speaker 2: to Cleveland. Okay, Elizabeth, you ever heard the story of
[3:15] Speaker 2: ten cent beer night? No? Oh, have I got a
[3:17] Speaker 2: fun one for you?
[3:18] Speaker 3: Like a disaster?
[3:19] Speaker 2: Oh it is. This is Ridiculous Crime, a podcast about
[3:44] Speaker 2: absurd and outrageous capers, heists and cons. It's always nine
[3:50] Speaker 2: percent murder free and ridiculous. Yes, oh, Elizabeth, you love
[3:56] Speaker 2: the baseball I do, or at least you used to
[3:58] Speaker 2: love it before the A's broke your heart. Yeah's about
[4:01] Speaker 2: baseball these days?
[4:01] Speaker 3: I've soured on MLB. I just think the whole thing
[4:06] Speaker 3: is a sham.
[4:07] Speaker 2: So you're now down to minor league baseball.
[4:08] Speaker 3: No, not even minor league. I'm into Pioneer League.
[4:11] Speaker 2: Pioneer League wow, which is.
[4:13] Speaker 3: Like minor minors. Yeah, but we have a new team here.
[4:16] Speaker 3: I don't know, it's like Z ball. They have a
[4:19] Speaker 3: team here in Oakland, the Ballers, Nice Oakland Ballers, And
[4:24] Speaker 3: I'm yeah, I haven't been able to because all the
[4:26] Speaker 3: games have been sold out. He just started. They're doing
[4:28] Speaker 3: really well and they seem really cool. And so that's
[4:31] Speaker 3: my new thing. Pioneer League.
[4:33] Speaker 2: Nice.
[4:33] Speaker 3: I'm into it for you, pure baseball.
[4:36] Speaker 2: Well, do you mind hearing a baseball story?
[4:38] Speaker 3: I love to hear baseball stories.
[4:39] Speaker 2: Okay, Elizabeth. Do you know who the manager of the
[4:41] Speaker 2: Texas Rangers was back in nineteen seventy four.
[4:44] Speaker 3: Glenn Ford.
[4:47] Speaker 2: If only? No, it was the one and only Billy Martin.
[4:51] Speaker 3: Oh okay, and then he later.
[4:53] Speaker 2: Goes on to be Yes Yankees and Billy Ball exactly.
[4:58] Speaker 2: I didn't know he managed the Rangers seventy four. This
[5:01] Speaker 2: is a total shock to men.
[5:02] Speaker 3: Obviously, I didn't know what and I thought.
[5:03] Speaker 2: I knew some Billy Martin, you know, you know, more
[5:06] Speaker 2: than the average bear.
[5:07] Speaker 3: A lot of us thought we knew Billy Martin.
[5:08] Speaker 2: I know, right, So this one has just promise you,
[5:11] Speaker 2: because it has Billy Martin, it's gonna get good.
[5:13] Speaker 3: Nice.
[5:14] Speaker 2: Now, the story, even if the idea of ten cent
[5:16] Speaker 2: beer Knight starts like you know, you think, oh Cleveland,
[5:19] Speaker 2: it started in Texas, because of course it started in Texas.
[5:22] Speaker 2: This story the will begin it on May twenty ninth,
[5:26] Speaker 2: nineteen seventy four. The Cleveland Guardians, then known as the
[5:29] Speaker 2: Cleveland Indians. We're facing the Texas Rangers right now. The
[5:33] Speaker 2: game starts to get unruly in the fourth inning after
[5:36] Speaker 2: there's this hard slide play at second base on a
[5:39] Speaker 2: double play in the now in the bottom of the
[5:41] Speaker 2: eighth inning, the Cleveland players get their revenge. There's a
[5:44] Speaker 2: bunt and then there's a tag out at first base
[5:46] Speaker 2: and this batter leads with his elbow and he collides
[5:48] Speaker 2: with the first basement. Boom. He disrupts him. In response
[5:52] Speaker 2: to first basement, throws a punch. That's it. Both benches cleared.
[5:56] Speaker 2: Massive brawl in the diamond, and so the Cleveland players
[6:00] Speaker 2: eventually they get you know, pulled back to their dugout.
[6:02] Speaker 2: But the Texas fans they're not over it, right. So
[6:05] Speaker 2: as they're going back to their dugout, they're just getting
[6:07] Speaker 2: rained down on by hot dogs, beers, whatever they got, right.
[6:10] Speaker 2: So as he's half eaten hot dogs and half warm
[6:13] Speaker 2: beer from Texas or raining down to the Cleveland players,
[6:15] Speaker 2: they're just fuming. Right. One player, because you know there's
[6:18] Speaker 2: always at least one. The catcher for Cleveland, this dude
[6:20] Speaker 2: named Dave Duncan. He tries to go into the stands
[6:23] Speaker 2: and fight the foe. They're kidding, yes, because they've been
[6:26] Speaker 2: attacking his teammates with hot dogs and beers. Now you
[6:28] Speaker 2: can't stand Elizabeth. So the catcher he has to be
[6:31] Speaker 2: held back from climbing into the stands to beat on
[6:33] Speaker 2: these Texas fans. That's in May down in Texas. Now Elizabeth.
[6:37] Speaker 2: As wild as that game was, the game featured no suspensions,
[6:41] Speaker 2: no forfeiture of the game. No players were rejected.
[6:45] Speaker 3: Even though he got all up in the stands exactly.
[6:47] Speaker 2: Umpires were like, yeah, it's cool as you know whatever,
[6:49] Speaker 2: It's a bea chill. Nobody got hurt, right. It was
[6:51] Speaker 2: a different time, very different time. Now. In a few weeks,
[6:54] Speaker 2: Texas and Cleveland were set for a series up in Cleveland,
[6:57] Speaker 2: which is why after the game Texas ranged manager Billy Martin.
[7:01] Speaker 2: He's being interviewed by the reporters right in this Cleveland
[7:04] Speaker 2: sports writer he asked him, are you gonna take your
[7:07] Speaker 2: arm to Cleveland? Billy, and always quick to pop off,
[7:09] Speaker 2: Billy Martin's like, nah, they won't have enough fans there
[7:12] Speaker 2: to worry about. Oh ouch, okay, So a little context
[7:15] Speaker 2: about Cleveland Elizabeth in the nineteen seventies. Do you know
[7:18] Speaker 2: much about Cleveland in the nineteen seventies.
[7:20] Speaker 3: I'm gonna guess it was awesome.
[7:22] Speaker 2: Yeah, oh yeah. So in the nineteen seventies, the Cleveland
[7:25] Speaker 2: Ball Club at that point is the Cleveland Municipal Stadium,
[7:29] Speaker 2: huge cathedral to baseball, built in nineteen thirty two. The
[7:32] Speaker 2: depression was on, they still managed to make it be
[7:35] Speaker 2: built with public funds. Oh Rab Gik was nineteen twenty eight.
[7:38] Speaker 2: They approved the funds. But anyway, okay, this huge cathedral
[7:41] Speaker 2: to baseball stadiums. It seeded seventy four thousand.
[7:44] Speaker 3: Right, seventy four thousand.
[7:46] Speaker 2: Now, for it was the biggest one in baseball. For comparison,
[7:49] Speaker 2: the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, constructed a decade earlier, paled
[7:52] Speaker 2: in comparison when it came to seating in the LA
[7:55] Speaker 2: Coliseum or the USC they played also a really big one.
[7:59] Speaker 2: They would later host the thirty two Olympics, and many
[8:01] Speaker 2: people thought the Municipal Stadium would host the thirty two Olympics.
[8:04] Speaker 2: That's how grand this place was, right clean, exactly, But
[8:08] Speaker 2: it loses out to LA and of course the Coliseum.
[8:10] Speaker 2: Now that site decision, you could say the Olympics, like
[8:13] Speaker 2: Summer Olympics, choice to be in La not in Cleveland.
[8:15] Speaker 2: You could say that marked the end of Cleveland's era
[8:18] Speaker 2: of ascendants, right nineteen thirty because as soon as you basically, well,
[8:23] Speaker 2: I'll put it this way, in nineteen twenty eight, right Cleveland,
[8:25] Speaker 2: when it built Municipal Stadium, or started to build it,
[8:28] Speaker 2: the city had just passed Saint Louis to become the
[8:30] Speaker 2: fifth most populous city in the United States. Four years later,
[8:34] Speaker 2: nineteen thirty two, Cleveland is now looking to pass Detroit
[8:38] Speaker 2: to become the fourth most populous city in the United States.
[8:42] Speaker 2: We're talking up with the big kids now New York. Okay,
[8:46] Speaker 2: but you see Elizabeth the city, it had reached its zenith.
[8:49] Speaker 2: They didn't know this at the time, but from that
[8:50] Speaker 2: point on, Cleveland just starts to fall and fall and
[8:53] Speaker 2: just keep hitting harder times and harder times, losing people,
[8:57] Speaker 2: shaking them off.
[8:58] Speaker 3: Now, somehow I think it just got oh totally in my.
[9:01] Speaker 2: Opinion, you know same. Now today Cleveland is well here,
[9:03] Speaker 2: I'll let you guess where do you think Cleveland ranks
[9:06] Speaker 2: now on the list of the most populous cities in
[9:09] Speaker 2: the United States.
[9:10] Speaker 3: Wow, twelve fifty fourth fifty four.
[9:14] Speaker 2: For comparison's sake, that puts Cleveland just behind Wichita, Kansas
[9:17] Speaker 2: and Aurora, Colorado in terms of size, and just ahead
[9:21] Speaker 2: of Honolulu and Anaheim. Wow, Cleveland is now just a
[9:24] Speaker 2: little bigger than a city that was built to house Disneyland. Okay,
[9:28] Speaker 2: so basically Cleveland's heyday. As I pointed out, it's peak
[9:31] Speaker 2: with nineteen twenty nine, and if you just track like
[9:33] Speaker 2: one day before the Stark Market crash, that's Cleveland's peak
[9:36] Speaker 2: because from.
[9:37] Speaker 3: That point on an upswing lately.
[9:40] Speaker 2: Yes, I mean it has really come around a lot
[9:42] Speaker 2: of those old Roust Belt cities, Pittsburgh, same thing they have.
[9:45] Speaker 2: Definitely Cleveland has really tried hard.
[9:47] Speaker 3: Cleveland, the one with the really dirty river.
[9:49] Speaker 2: Just about it. Oh no, I'm glad you mentioned it.
[9:52] Speaker 2: The Cuyahoga River. Yeah, what do you know about the
[9:54] Speaker 2: Cuyahoga River? Li is, in nineteen fifty two, the Cyahoga
[9:59] Speaker 2: River caught fire. This was not the first time it
[10:02] Speaker 2: had caught fire. This is, in fact, the ninth time
[10:04] Speaker 2: it had caught fire. Now you have to understand, like
[10:07] Speaker 2: this river winds through downtown Cleveland, right, So when a
[10:10] Speaker 2: river catches on fire, and rivers are not supposed to
[10:12] Speaker 2: catch on fire, and it's in the middle of downtown,
[10:14] Speaker 2: it catches a lot of attention. Now, but obviously it
[10:17] Speaker 2: takes some oil and pollution to be on the you know,
[10:19] Speaker 2: top of the river. That's what catches fire? But this
[10:22] Speaker 2: happened over and over and over again. Now, surprisingly, at
[10:26] Speaker 2: the time, a river catching on fire was not really
[10:28] Speaker 2: a big deal. They're like, oh, I didn't catch fire again.
[10:30] Speaker 2: Oh ho ho ha. Right, people outside of Cleveland, they're like,
[10:33] Speaker 2: what the hell? And then in nineteen sixty nine, as
[10:36] Speaker 2: you know, attitudes about the earth are changing, the river
[10:40] Speaker 2: catches fire again. This time it's impossible to ignore because
[10:43] Speaker 2: in sixty nine the flames reached five stories high. Wait,
[10:47] Speaker 2: what you have flames as tall as a downtown building
[10:51] Speaker 2: burning on the river.
[10:52] Speaker 3: I didn't know that huge. Oh my god.
[10:54] Speaker 2: Now, I don't want to over exaggerate it, because the
[10:57] Speaker 2: fire only lasted a half an hour, so you know,
[11:00] Speaker 2: it wasn't like buiding for days.
[11:01] Speaker 3: I have such a soft spot for places like this,
[11:05] Speaker 3: coming from like a hard scrabble industrial city like Oakland
[11:09] Speaker 3: and that. Yeah, it's a bad wrap, and yet there's
[11:12] Speaker 3: a lot of cool, loot of heart people.
[11:14] Speaker 2: If you stay, you stay for a reason. Yes, my
[11:16] Speaker 2: mom lived in Cleveland. I've been there a bunch.
[11:19] Speaker 3: I have simpatico.
[11:20] Speaker 2: Yeah exactly, you know. So okay, Well we have also
[11:23] Speaker 2: the Cuyahoga River catching on fire, in nineteen sixty nine.
[11:26] Speaker 2: We have to thank it because it was a hugely
[11:28] Speaker 2: influential event to the passage of the Environmental Protection Act
[11:32] Speaker 2: in nineteen.
[11:33] Speaker 3: Seventy Yeah, I would imagine.
[11:34] Speaker 2: So it was also a perfect symbol in indication of
[11:37] Speaker 2: how far Cleveland had fallen. So we got you know,
[11:39] Speaker 2: ups and downs in either way. Yeah. Throughout the sixties,
[11:42] Speaker 2: Cleveland has been watching its factories and its industrial base
[11:45] Speaker 2: basically close up shop and move out of state or
[11:48] Speaker 2: out of overseas. I'm talking, like I say, factories. We're
[11:52] Speaker 2: talking six hundred factories left town. Yeah, that's a lot, right,
[11:57] Speaker 2: So how does all this connect to ten cent beer nights? Zarin?
[12:00] Speaker 3: Great question, Elizabe, really good questions.
[12:02] Speaker 2: Obviously, nineteen seventy four, people in Cleveland were down to drink.
[12:05] Speaker 2: They had a first right after watching all the factories
[12:08] Speaker 2: close and the river and downtown burn over and over again,
[12:10] Speaker 2: people in Cleveland a feeling a little rambunctious.
[12:12] Speaker 3: Then, you know, to weather that you got to be
[12:14] Speaker 3: made a tough stuff and you gotta, you know, like
[12:17] Speaker 3: to get down with ten cent beer.
[12:20] Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly, maybe laugh at the blakness of life sometimes.
[12:23] Speaker 2: So meanwhile, they had not been going to ball games.
[12:26] Speaker 2: They weren't typically in the mood for a ball game
[12:28] Speaker 2: because everybody's on hard times, right, so they're like, oh,
[12:30] Speaker 2: I'm not going to go see these bummer you know,
[12:33] Speaker 2: Cleveland players.
[12:33] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[12:34] Speaker 2: So in May, at the beginning of that baseball season,
[12:37] Speaker 2: Cleveland was seeing about an average of four thousand spectators
[12:40] Speaker 2: walk through the gates of their enormous cathedral.
[12:43] Speaker 4: Exactly.
[12:44] Speaker 2: I thought you'd recognize those numbers. Now, most of the
[12:46] Speaker 2: season the team because it ted their business attendance. Typically,
[12:50] Speaker 2: they were having about eighty five percent of the seats
[12:52] Speaker 2: go unsold. Okay, so one day, executive vice president Ted
[12:56] Speaker 2: Bonda takes a look at the ledger. His eyes grow
[12:58] Speaker 2: wide at the sight of all that red. He's like,
[13:01] Speaker 2: we're gonna lose the franchise.
[13:02] Speaker 3: Oh yeah, totally.
[13:02] Speaker 2: The team is losing money faster than you can say, like,
[13:04] Speaker 2: I don't know, mc hammerton, Yes, there you go. So
[13:08] Speaker 2: this cat Ted Bond. He's desperate to turn around the
[13:10] Speaker 2: fortunes of his team. He looks around, he sees this
[13:13] Speaker 2: idea that seems to be an answer to his prayers.
[13:15] Speaker 2: Texas Rangers hold this promotion. He gets butts in the
[13:19] Speaker 2: seats fills the whole place. They call it ten cent
[13:22] Speaker 2: Beer Night. So it's exactly as advertised. It's all the
[13:25] Speaker 2: beer you can drink for ten cents, no limit. Oh,
[13:28] Speaker 2: Ted Bond says to himself.
[13:30] Speaker 3: No limit soldiers on that one.
[13:31] Speaker 2: What if we threw our own ten cent beer night?
[13:34] Speaker 2: We could do that. So in the meantime, Cleveland goes
[13:37] Speaker 2: down to Texas and gets into that bench clearing brawl.
[13:39] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[13:39] Speaker 2: In response to the Cleveland sports radio talk show hosts
[13:42] Speaker 2: Pete Franklin and Joe Tait, they fire up the fandom.
[13:46] Speaker 2: They have this home stand coming up, and so Cleveland
[13:48] Speaker 2: could be playing host to the Rangers. Now the team
[13:50] Speaker 2: can get its revenge before the home field fans. Elizabeth
[13:54] Speaker 2: the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the newspaper, they get involved on it.
[13:56] Speaker 2: They're like, oh, we gotta hype this right. They print
[13:59] Speaker 2: a cartoon of the Cleveland mascot, Chief Wahoo, and he's
[14:02] Speaker 2: got boxing gloves. The caption reads, be ready for anything.
[14:06] Speaker 2: Oh God. So this is now six days after the
[14:09] Speaker 2: bench clearing brawl, not even a full week. The Texas
[14:12] Speaker 2: Rangers come to Cleveland. Coincidentally, they arrive on ten cent
[14:15] Speaker 2: beer Night.
[14:16] Speaker 3: Oh coincidence.
[14:17] Speaker 2: Yes, the promotion totally works. Twenty three thousand, five hundred
[14:21] Speaker 2: fans show up. That's six times their average it The
[14:26] Speaker 2: beer sponsor for this promotion is Stros, Remember Stros?
[14:29] Speaker 3: Yes? Right, Oh, this is getting better.
[14:32] Speaker 2: The promotion offers beers at ten cents each, as I said,
[14:35] Speaker 2: with a limit of six beers per purchase, but no
[14:38] Speaker 2: limit on how many purchases can be made for how
[14:41] Speaker 2: many beers can be purchased by any individual outside of
[14:43] Speaker 2: that six per.
[14:44] Speaker 3: Time, six at a time.
[14:46] Speaker 2: Now, the stage for the June fourth, nineteen seventy four
[14:49] Speaker 2: ten cent beer Night is set. God, take a little break,
[14:52] Speaker 2: Elizabeth after this. Let's play ball, Elizabeth. We're back, yay, Okay,
[15:18] Speaker 2: So let's get into this game.
[15:19] Speaker 3: Yes.
[15:20] Speaker 2: So, when the Texas Rangers manager Billy Martin he comes
[15:23] Speaker 2: out to present his lineup card to the umpires for
[15:25] Speaker 2: the game, the Cleveland fans start booing him, just mercilessly. Right,
[15:30] Speaker 2: This sets the tenor for the game. Now, when it
[15:32] Speaker 2: comes to accounts of what's to come, we're lucky because
[15:35] Speaker 2: we have not just a few eye witnesses, we actually
[15:38] Speaker 2: have this story told from the perspective of the very
[15:40] Speaker 2: guy who starts the riot. Oh yeah, there's a riot
[15:43] Speaker 2: at some point. Yeah. This dude's name. He's nineteen year
[15:46] Speaker 2: old fan named Terry Yerkic, And in two thousand and seven,
[15:49] Speaker 2: his story was told in the Cleveland magazine by writer
[15:51] Speaker 2: Andy Netzel. So, according to Terry Yerkich's account, I was
[15:56] Speaker 2: nineteen and in my first year in college. This was
[15:58] Speaker 2: like no game I'd ever been through, and I've been
[16:01] Speaker 2: through a lot of Indian games. I went to the
[16:03] Speaker 2: game with five friends. We're sitting up in the center
[16:05] Speaker 2: field bleachers, right. So he's enjoying. So he's enjoying this game.
[16:10] Speaker 2: He's from Chicago. What can I tell you, Darry Yurkich.
[16:12] Speaker 2: He also remembered the beer trucks. A beer truck was
[16:15] Speaker 2: set up right behind the home run fence. Truck looked
[16:18] Speaker 2: like a big box, like a U haul truck. They
[16:20] Speaker 2: had all the kegs inside the Spickett's coming out this side.
[16:23] Speaker 2: At first people paid attention to the game, but eventually
[16:27] Speaker 2: most people were more concerned about getting their beer. Now. Also,
[16:30] Speaker 2: we know that without prompting, hundreds of fans had all
[16:33] Speaker 2: arrived at the game. No one told him to do this,
[16:36] Speaker 2: and they all bring pocketful of fireworks. Oh yeah, right.
[16:40] Speaker 2: So as chief wa who told the fans be ready
[16:42] Speaker 2: for anything, well, yeah, he loved So starting from the
[16:46] Speaker 2: first pitch, fireworks start popping off right. The smoke and
[16:49] Speaker 2: the bangs and the smell of gunpowder. It's giving Cleveland
[16:52] Speaker 2: Municipal Stadium the feeling of a war zone, Elizabeth. Now,
[16:55] Speaker 2: according to my man Terry Yurkicic, people were blowing off
[16:59] Speaker 2: firecrackers in the bleachers. They weren't big, but they were
[17:01] Speaker 2: big enough. Everyone was trying to steer clear of them.
[17:04] Speaker 2: But the security never even gotten involved. No, since it's
[17:08] Speaker 2: nineteen seventy four, there's other smoke coloring the air. Pot smoke, Elizabeth,
[17:12] Speaker 2: clouds of it.
[17:13] Speaker 5: Right.
[17:13] Speaker 3: It is like you could in Oakland totally to today.
[17:17] Speaker 3: This is yet every week tonight the cops do absolutely
[17:22] Speaker 3: nothing about people breaking the law. Yeah, I love it.
[17:25] Speaker 2: So there's, as I said, there's this recognizable lawless vibe
[17:28] Speaker 2: that you would know from Oakland. And this vibe starts
[17:30] Speaker 2: to spread through the crowd. By the top of the
[17:33] Speaker 2: second inning, things are already becoming a little unhinted. After
[17:36] Speaker 2: the designated hitter for Texas Rangers hits a home run,
[17:39] Speaker 2: this very large breasted woman seated on the first baseline.
[17:42] Speaker 2: She jumps over the wall, runs out onto the diamond.
[17:45] Speaker 2: She stops at the on deck circle and then flashes
[17:47] Speaker 2: her breasts out the crowd. Oh god, it already now
[17:50] Speaker 2: starting to get drunk. Buzzing crowd essentially responds exactly how
[17:54] Speaker 2: you might imagine bunch. Also, a very young crowd will say,
[17:57] Speaker 2: is attracted to ten cent beer.
[17:59] Speaker 3: Night, But yeah, because you normally are pulling in like
[18:02] Speaker 3: four thousand people, and now you're almost a twenty four thousand,
[18:04] Speaker 3: So you've got twenty thousand people. Basically, we're not your
[18:07] Speaker 3: regular sport who were there for beer.
[18:10] Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, and now they're getting bare breasted women, so
[18:13] Speaker 2: they hoot, they haul, they're loving it. Then she tries
[18:16] Speaker 2: to run up and kiss the umpire This guy Nestra Shilac.
[18:19] Speaker 2: He's not down, Elizabeth. The woman gets escorted from the Diamond.
[18:23] Speaker 2: But now she started a whole mood because throughout the
[18:25] Speaker 2: second inning, other fans were like, I would also like
[18:28] Speaker 2: to hop onto the field and get naked.
[18:29] Speaker 3: And show my bazoo.
[18:30] Speaker 2: So men, women, everyone just starts streaking across the field
[18:34] Speaker 2: right stark naked one Texas ranger player my cargroup. He
[18:38] Speaker 2: recalls how and I quote started out with a couple
[18:40] Speaker 2: of people doing it. Then it was five, then ten,
[18:43] Speaker 2: then it was a whole bunch. I don't know how
[18:45] Speaker 2: many a whole bunches, but it's more than ten. Anyway,
[18:47] Speaker 2: high school fan named Jack Barno who was there with friends.
[18:50] Speaker 2: He's seated in the upper deck that day, and he
[18:53] Speaker 2: remembers how people were streaking across the field and cops
[18:55] Speaker 2: are chasing them. They were laughing like you can't catch me.
[18:58] Speaker 2: There were a handful of cops on the other side
[19:00] Speaker 2: with billy clubs, and when they came over that fence,
[19:02] Speaker 2: they met them with a couple of wax to the
[19:04] Speaker 2: head and drag them off. So now we got violence
[19:06] Speaker 2: popping off, ye right.
[19:08] Speaker 3: And that's only gonna stoke violence in the crowd, yes, of.
[19:11] Speaker 2: Course A right. And they're like bringing up the billy clubs,
[19:13] Speaker 2: whacking people drunks on the head. Right, So there're people
[19:15] Speaker 2: are like, oh, I see what how this is turning?
[19:18] Speaker 5: Well?
[19:18] Speaker 3: It makes me think of the A's had Novelty bat night. Yes,
[19:22] Speaker 3: and that's just basically handing out billy clubs Like so yeah,
[19:26] Speaker 3: it's a bad combo.
[19:27] Speaker 2: So fourth inning, that same Texas Ranger DH hits a
[19:30] Speaker 2: second home run. After he's rounding second base on his
[19:33] Speaker 2: way to third base, a naked man joins him on
[19:35] Speaker 2: the diamond, also trying to round second base. Yes, but
[19:39] Speaker 2: the streaker decides, you know what, well, I'm here, I'm
[19:41] Speaker 2: gonna take my one chance at a major league slide.
[19:44] Speaker 2: He goes through, sliding face first into second base, totally naked. Elizabeth,
[19:48] Speaker 2: you know how baseball gravel is and how like it's like, oh,
[19:51] Speaker 2: that looks like red clay or whatever. Yeah, no, it's
[19:53] Speaker 2: gonna rip you up right. So the streaker sliding into
[19:56] Speaker 2: second The local papers put in a quote, probably getting
[19:58] Speaker 2: dirt in places unsuitab for speculation.
[20:01] Speaker 3: Oh damn right, that's he just needs to blame stros
[20:04] Speaker 3: for that.
[20:04] Speaker 2: So at this point in the fourth inning, we have
[20:06] Speaker 2: fireworks going off every few minutes, women flashing their breast,
[20:10] Speaker 2: young men running naked across the field showing off their
[20:12] Speaker 2: bait and tackle, and damn near, everyone's getting drunker and
[20:15] Speaker 2: drunker and drunker. Then a Cleveland player hits a rocket
[20:18] Speaker 2: shot right back at the Rangers pitcher Ferguson Jenkins Old
[20:21] Speaker 2: Fergie Jenkins hits him square in the gut, drops him
[20:24] Speaker 2: on the mound.
[20:25] Speaker 3: Right.
[20:25] Speaker 2: While Fergie Jenkins is lying there on the mound, writhing
[20:28] Speaker 2: around an obvious pain, a chant breaks out amongst the
[20:31] Speaker 2: Cleveland fans. Hit him again, Hit him again, harder, harder,
[20:35] Speaker 2: hit him again, hit him ahead, harder, harder.
[20:39] Speaker 3: So, hey, I would I would pay money to go
[20:42] Speaker 3: back in time and go to this game.
[20:43] Speaker 2: It sounds so that's same inning. Right. There's a play
[20:47] Speaker 2: at third and a Cleveland based runner is called safe.
[20:49] Speaker 2: So manager for the Texas Rangers, Billy Martin, does what
[20:52] Speaker 2: Billy Martin does, storming out of a dugout full speed,
[20:55] Speaker 2: just kicking. Yes, you know his move, right, So he's
[20:58] Speaker 2: attacking the ump, kicking dust on him, ruining his socks.
[21:01] Speaker 2: He's the best, right, so Billy Martin arguing the call.
[21:04] Speaker 2: We're deep in the game now, right, So fans are
[21:06] Speaker 2: deep in their cups. They have a shot at him
[21:08] Speaker 2: on the field, so they start chucking beers at Billy Martin.
[21:11] Speaker 2: The umpire starts catching strays. It's getting bad. Hot dogs
[21:15] Speaker 2: are hitting them right. So Billy Martin, being the peach
[21:17] Speaker 2: that he is, he refuses to get mad. Most of
[21:20] Speaker 2: the beer is missing him anyway, So while he walks
[21:22] Speaker 2: back to the dugout, he's blowing kisses at the Cleveland
[21:25] Speaker 2: fans like eat it up, gotta love anyway. The next inning,
[21:29] Speaker 2: the fifth inning, a father and son Elizabeth, taking a
[21:32] Speaker 2: part in that long beloved American tradition of enjoying a
[21:35] Speaker 2: baseball game together. They stand up, they jump over the
[21:39] Speaker 2: wall and run onto the field.
[21:40] Speaker 3: Yes.
[21:41] Speaker 2: Then they lower the pants and they moon the Texas
[21:43] Speaker 2: Ranger outfield. No. The crowd and the bleachers watching goes nuts.
[21:48] Speaker 2: The drunken fans they love it more. More flesh on
[21:52] Speaker 2: the field, the Texas Ranger players not so much hands,
[21:55] Speaker 2: hands on hips, ted's down, they're just like humiliated. Security
[22:01] Speaker 2: runs onto the field. They chased the father and son
[22:02] Speaker 2: as they yank up their breeches and try to get away.
[22:05] Speaker 2: At this point, like I said, it's the fifth inning.
[22:07] Speaker 2: What's the beer situation like on ten cent beer Nights,
[22:09] Speaker 2: Arin Greig.
[22:11] Speaker 3: Question, Elizabeth, Yes, yeah.
[22:13] Speaker 2: So at this point, according to Terry Jerkic, it was
[22:17] Speaker 2: taking twenty minutes to get a beer. People started to
[22:19] Speaker 2: get pretty impatient. Tables surrounded the truck right the workers
[22:24] Speaker 2: pouring the bill would fill up any container you brought them.
[22:27] Speaker 2: I had a big dog in sudsmug, maybe thirty two ounces.
[22:31] Speaker 2: It looked like a little mini keg. So now people
[22:34] Speaker 2: are sucking out all the they could get into their heads. Right,
[22:37] Speaker 2: people are filling whatever they can bring in front of
[22:39] Speaker 2: the strows. People didn't take long to turn into just chaos.
[22:42] Speaker 2: Right back to Terry Yerkic, the crowd crew in more patient,
[22:46] Speaker 2: and they threw the tables to the side. The people
[22:48] Speaker 2: were manning the truck basically abandoned it. The police were
[22:51] Speaker 2: standing right there. They didn't seem to care, or maybe
[22:54] Speaker 2: they thought they couldn't handle that many people. So now
[22:56] Speaker 2: the cops scared out. Number were still only in the
[22:59] Speaker 2: fifth inning.
[23:00] Speaker 3: Oh my god, and they kicked over the tables in
[23:02] Speaker 3: front of the Oh oh boy.
[23:04] Speaker 2: As Terry Yerkis says, some guys stop filling their containers
[23:07] Speaker 2: and just put their mouths right under the taps on
[23:10] Speaker 2: the field. The streakers just keep running. Thanks for escalating,
[23:13] Speaker 2: you think so Around this point in the game, right,
[23:16] Speaker 2: one fan he throws a tennis ball down onto the field, right,
[23:18] Speaker 2: just I don't know, a joker a little bit of
[23:21] Speaker 2: he throws it into center field. But he's one of
[23:23] Speaker 2: your people, Elizabeth. He doesn't want to leave his mess
[23:25] Speaker 2: for someone else to clean up, so instead he hops
[23:28] Speaker 2: down onto the field. He runs over the middle of
[23:30] Speaker 2: the game, grabs his tennis ball, and he throws it
[23:32] Speaker 2: back to his friends in this dance like I got
[23:34] Speaker 2: the ball. Guys. At this point, Elizabeth, stadium security there
[23:38] Speaker 2: on him. They know they got to be quick on this,
[23:40] Speaker 2: so this guy he sees the security coming, so he
[23:43] Speaker 2: gives him a little headfake. He dishes. One security guard
[23:45] Speaker 2: gets chased by another. Now while he's running, this fan
[23:49] Speaker 2: sees him and shouts at this ball retriever guy, Elizabeth.
[23:52] Speaker 2: This may be my favorite part of this entire story.
[23:55] Speaker 2: The guy in the stands who shouts is a long
[23:57] Speaker 2: lost relative of the ball retriever and recognizes him on
[24:00] Speaker 2: the diamond. Oh my god, a retriever guy points at
[24:03] Speaker 2: his like fan and realizes that he's his family, and
[24:07] Speaker 2: then he runs over towards him. At the same time,
[24:09] Speaker 2: the long lost relative comes down the steps and he
[24:12] Speaker 2: hops the fence and he runs onto the field. The
[24:14] Speaker 2: two relatives hug on the diamond in the middle of
[24:17] Speaker 2: the game. It's impromptu family reunion so good. It's the
[24:21] Speaker 2: security guards catch up to them, because remember he gave
[24:23] Speaker 2: him the head fake before. Yeah. Now the two guys
[24:25] Speaker 2: are hugging. They get tackled by securitys with it. The
[24:29] Speaker 2: ball retriever guy shoves security off of him. He hops
[24:32] Speaker 2: back into the stands where his family just came from.
[24:34] Speaker 2: He escapes that he gets shielded by all the drunk fans.
[24:37] Speaker 2: They won't let security chase because they love his scoffs
[24:41] Speaker 2: and his family's story. I mean, it's beautiful, it's heartwarming.
[24:44] Speaker 2: The long lost relative, though, he gets grabbed by security.
[24:47] Speaker 2: So the fans they don't like this outcome.
[24:48] Speaker 3: Elizabeth as a sacrifice.
[24:51] Speaker 2: They let the security have it. Beers come raining down,
[24:54] Speaker 2: but also golf balls. Now they wait. They found small
[24:58] Speaker 2: rocks from like the stadium floor, the pieces of cement.
[25:01] Speaker 2: A shoe comes down, hits one guy. These people are drunk,
[25:04] Speaker 2: so they're throwing out whatever they can reach.
[25:06] Speaker 3: They brought equipment for other sports. They brought tennis fall
[25:11] Speaker 3: golf balls.
[25:12] Speaker 2: Exactly that hockey puck can come on, be ready, exactly,
[25:16] Speaker 2: Cleveland listens, Cleveland. True. So at this point, the PA
[25:20] Speaker 2: announcer comes on the stadium speakers ask the fans please
[25:23] Speaker 2: do not throw letter.
[25:24] Speaker 3: Onto the dormond right, oh yeah, that'll stop.
[25:26] Speaker 2: Crowd response is to throw way more stuff onto the field,
[25:29] Speaker 2: so now it's just like a rain. Immediately time ground
[25:32] Speaker 2: crew is like, oh my god, you guys cured me.
[25:34] Speaker 2: They go out that have to clear the field of
[25:35] Speaker 2: all the larger objects of the game can go on.
[25:37] Speaker 2: So now the fans use the ground crew as target,
[25:40] Speaker 2: like it's duck hunt. They got these guys going back
[25:41] Speaker 2: and forth. They're like, yeah, tag them. So now they're
[25:43] Speaker 2: throwing more stuff at the guys cleaning up the stuff
[25:45] Speaker 2: they've been throwing. One woman looking to get her piece
[25:48] Speaker 2: of the spotlight Elizabeth, She hops the low fence, runs
[25:51] Speaker 2: onto the diamond. She waves at her fellow fans as
[25:54] Speaker 2: she runs across the ballpark. She's not a streaker, she's
[25:56] Speaker 2: fully dressed. But when she stops running, because you know
[25:59] Speaker 2: why not, she wants to at her time on the spotlight.
[26:01] Speaker 2: Before the security can get to her, the crowd dorges
[26:03] Speaker 2: her take it off, so she pretends to do a
[26:07] Speaker 2: strip tease for the crowd. Security gets to her first
[26:10] Speaker 2: before any clothes come off. When they do, the woman
[26:13] Speaker 2: then turns and attacks the security like a cat throwing pause.
[26:17] Speaker 2: She's just crawling at the air. Security forces her to
[26:20] Speaker 2: the grass. Crowd goes nuts. We're like police brutality, probably fertality.
[26:25] Speaker 2: Firecrackers get thrown onto the field at the security. That
[26:28] Speaker 2: feels fun. So someone's like, what if we throw them
[26:30] Speaker 2: into the dugout. They're like, oh, we can't reach that.
[26:32] Speaker 2: We can reach the bullpen. So they throw them at
[26:34] Speaker 2: the Texas Rangers bullpen.
[26:36] Speaker 3: Oh no, this.
[26:37] Speaker 2: Big boy, long daddy of a firecracker, Elizabeth. When it
[26:40] Speaker 2: goes off, it sounds like her grenade. Players are hitting
[26:42] Speaker 2: the deck. The umpire Nestor Chilac stops the game because
[26:46] Speaker 2: now he's got like warfare, like real warfare. He orders
[26:48] Speaker 2: the Rangers bullpen evacuated for the player's safety. He tells
[26:51] Speaker 2: the maners, I'll let him warm up on the mound.
[26:54] Speaker 2: It's fine. So around this point, I.
[26:56] Speaker 3: Mean, at what point do you say that's it. We're
[26:58] Speaker 3: calling No, No.
[27:00] Speaker 2: We're just get We still have a couple mornings before
[27:02] Speaker 2: it really gets loose. Yeah, we're about the sixth of
[27:04] Speaker 2: this point, coming into the seventh. So at this point,
[27:07] Speaker 2: Mike Hargrove gets brought into the game as a substitution,
[27:10] Speaker 2: and he plays first base, and for his intro into
[27:12] Speaker 2: the game, he has to dodge a half gone jug
[27:15] Speaker 2: of Thunderbird wine. The thunderbird, oh my god, apparely misses
[27:18] Speaker 2: his head by inches. That's his intro to the games.
[27:22] Speaker 2: They go take first. He's like, okay, I'll said them
[27:25] Speaker 2: so Elizabeth, nothing really says, I want to get stupid
[27:27] Speaker 2: drunk tonight, like a half drunk bottle of Thunderbear. Anyway,
[27:31] Speaker 2: jug as I said, misses him, but the hot Dogs don't.
[27:33] Speaker 2: So he's getting pelted by hot dogs. Some bears are
[27:36] Speaker 2: hitting him his feet right. So before Hargrove's first inning
[27:40] Speaker 2: is over, a new group of Streakers runs out onto
[27:42] Speaker 2: the field and they come from the third base side,
[27:44] Speaker 2: and they run onto the field dressed, but then they
[27:46] Speaker 2: quickly decide to get undressed. Once they're on the field,
[27:49] Speaker 2: they're like, well, let's do it here. I think they
[27:52] Speaker 2: were envious of the woman who got all the collapse
[27:53] Speaker 2: and attention. They're like, we can do that too, guys,
[27:55] Speaker 2: And so they go out to left center field and
[27:57] Speaker 2: they strip right. So they started then also like, you know,
[27:59] Speaker 2: we need some to defend ourselves against the security now
[28:02] Speaker 2: that we're you know, defenseless. So they grab the padding
[28:04] Speaker 2: off the left field wall and start ripping that down,
[28:07] Speaker 2: and then the people in the crowds are like, give
[28:08] Speaker 2: us some, so they throw some of the pads up
[28:10] Speaker 2: into the bleachers and then they start running around the
[28:12] Speaker 2: fields with some of the other chunks they've ripped off
[28:14] Speaker 2: the walls. Security is exhausted by this, so they're like,
[28:17] Speaker 2: who wants to go, Steve, do you? So they go
[28:20] Speaker 2: running back out on the diamond. They chase these nude
[28:22] Speaker 2: helions all around the ball bark. The crowd is cheering
[28:24] Speaker 2: and clapping. Radio guys Herbscore and Joe Tait, who've been
[28:27] Speaker 2: amused at first by all this, they're now commenting on
[28:30] Speaker 2: the families gathering up and fleeing the stadium and scared groups. Right. So,
[28:35] Speaker 2: now we're in the seventh inning and the beer is
[28:37] Speaker 2: still somehow flowing stross Elizabeth trucks. So the cops have
[28:44] Speaker 2: given up, some of em started drinking. They're now enjoying
[28:46] Speaker 2: the game. It's in the eighth inning. The Cleveland front
[28:50] Speaker 2: office is notably seen getting up and easing out of
[28:53] Speaker 2: the scene. Are kidding, Oh yeah? Like we no longer
[28:55] Speaker 2: want to be involved with what we started. So it's pandemonium, Elizabeth,
[28:58] Speaker 2: and everyone is sobered, point is leaving. Then comes the
[29:02] Speaker 2: ninth inning. The game, by the way, is close. The
[29:06] Speaker 2: Rangers are up in the bottom of the ninth Cleveland
[29:09] Speaker 2: rallies and ties the game five to five. We got
[29:12] Speaker 2: a tie game, folks, bottom of the night tie game.
[29:14] Speaker 3: So it's not like I mean, if it were a blowout.
[29:16] Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, you could call it. He's we got it,
[29:18] Speaker 2: you know. Years later, the substitute first Basement, Old Mike Cargo.
[29:22] Speaker 2: He recalls, how I remember nothing about the game other
[29:25] Speaker 2: than in that inning we were in trouble. They had
[29:28] Speaker 2: runners on and it looked like they were getting ready
[29:30] Speaker 2: to score and go ahead. Then all of a sudden,
[29:32] Speaker 2: all hell broke loose. So before the game is over,
[29:36] Speaker 2: Old Terry Yerkic he wants to grab a souvenir from
[29:39] Speaker 2: the ten cent beer night fiasco. So what's he doing?
[29:42] Speaker 2: Hops down onto the field, and he's a big boy, Elizabeth,
[29:45] Speaker 2: like a big Serbian boy. So he tries to drunkenly
[29:48] Speaker 2: sneak up and steal the hat off the head of
[29:50] Speaker 2: a player. While the game is going off that. I'll
[29:55] Speaker 2: tell you. I'll let Terry Yerkiz tell you. So in
[29:57] Speaker 2: the ninth inning, I hopped the fence and I ran
[29:59] Speaker 2: up to text this outfielder, Jeff Burrows. When I jumped,
[30:02] Speaker 2: I was the only one on the field. I came
[30:04] Speaker 2: running up behind him. He never saw me coming. I
[30:08] Speaker 2: grabbed the hat right off the top of his head.
[30:10] Speaker 2: Now Mike Cargove remembers it a little differently, and Margrove said,
[30:14] Speaker 2: some big, great guy, drunk guy took Jeff's hat. I
[30:17] Speaker 2: was one of the first ones to get there, right,
[30:20] Speaker 2: So back to Terry Jerks. I had it in my hand,
[30:22] Speaker 2: but I dropped it. It landed right by his foot.
[30:26] Speaker 2: He didn't say a word. Our eyes met. I looked
[30:29] Speaker 2: at him, and he looked at me, and I said, oh, hell,
[30:34] Speaker 2: Jeff Burrows right rangers right field? Are professional athlete sick
[30:37] Speaker 2: of it all?
[30:38] Speaker 3: Yeah?
[30:38] Speaker 2: He's over and wasn't that he just needs one out
[30:41] Speaker 2: to go home. So this professional athlete, he rears up
[30:44] Speaker 2: and he kicks this big trunk nineteen year old and
[30:46] Speaker 2: boots him backwards away from him, like get the hell
[30:49] Speaker 2: off my field. As Terry Jerkich puts it, he kicked
[30:52] Speaker 2: me right in the thigh. I had perfect spike marks
[30:55] Speaker 2: in my thigh. A few more people were now piling
[30:57] Speaker 2: onto the field at that point, I wasn't going to
[31:00] Speaker 2: down and get the hat. I was in retreat mode.
[31:02] Speaker 2: I wasn't trying to hurt him. I was just trying
[31:04] Speaker 2: to get a little souvenir. So Mike Hargrove runs from
[31:07] Speaker 2: first base and he's gonna go defend the outfielder, right, So,
[31:10] Speaker 2: Hargrove says, I tackled him and knocked him down, and
[31:13] Speaker 2: it took like three chops to handcuff him. Thank goodness,
[31:16] Speaker 2: he was on the ground. I took off or else.
[31:18] Speaker 2: So the cops do not actually successfully handcuff him because
[31:21] Speaker 2: Terry Yerkic slips away, big serbian kid. What can I
[31:24] Speaker 2: tell you, Elizabeth. So he runs towards the Texas Rangers dugout.
[31:29] Speaker 2: That's his escape plan is I'm gonna get through out
[31:30] Speaker 2: through the tunnels. So he's drunk, right, So, and there
[31:33] Speaker 2: are fans everywhere now because they're streaming onto the field.
[31:36] Speaker 2: Don't think the game is verty much over Urkic. He
[31:38] Speaker 2: still wants a little something for the.
[31:39] Speaker 3: Effort, and it's tied up, tied up, five to.
[31:41] Speaker 2: Five to bottom the ninth. It's there, it's their stand. Yeah,
[31:45] Speaker 2: they can have a walk off win, right, Terry Yurkic,
[31:48] Speaker 2: He recalls my brother and another friend. They tried to
[31:51] Speaker 2: get in. The Rangers dugout to get souvenirs too. So
[31:53] Speaker 2: now they've jumped down and they joined him. Right, but Elizabeth,
[31:57] Speaker 2: Biddy Martin, he don't play like that, No, Terry Yorkistru calls.
[32:01] Speaker 2: The players started swinging bats, the fans got chased into
[32:04] Speaker 2: the outfield. Well that's right, Billy Martin. He decides he
[32:08] Speaker 2: won't let a bunch of Cleveland fan hippie kids play
[32:11] Speaker 2: him like he's a punk. So armor, no armor, whatever,
[32:14] Speaker 2: He's ready to take on all of Cleveland Municipal Stadium.
[32:17] Speaker 3: Well they're armed. The baseball players have bats.
[32:19] Speaker 2: Oh yeah, Well well wait a minute, I should have
[32:22] Speaker 2: told you that the fans are also jumping down. Well armed,
[32:26] Speaker 2: some have knives. They've taken stadium seats and ripped them out,
[32:29] Speaker 2: and they're using them like clubs. It's a fair fight
[32:33] Speaker 2: except for the numbers. So let's take a little break,
[32:35] Speaker 2: and after this I'll tell you what happens when bad
[32:37] Speaker 2: Billy Martin goes to war against Cleveland. Oh good, Elizabeth, Yes,
[33:01] Speaker 2: where were we? Oh that's right, all hell broke loose,
[33:04] Speaker 2: So now we've got hell turned loose. Elizabeth. I'd like
[33:07] Speaker 2: you to close your eyes as a kid. I'd like
[33:09] Speaker 2: you to picture it. Elizabeth. It's warm spring night in Cleveland,
[33:14] Speaker 2: stars above, a soft breeze blowing through your hair. You
[33:18] Speaker 2: were invited to a Cleveland baseball game by a friend
[33:20] Speaker 2: from work. You've been working at a home for retired
[33:23] Speaker 2: seeing eye dogs. It's been a long week, and you
[33:25] Speaker 2: thought a ballgame sounded fun. A night out at the ballpark.
[33:29] Speaker 2: You have been to a game in forever. Only when
[33:31] Speaker 2: you get there you find out it's ten cent beer Knight.
[33:34] Speaker 2: So now you and your work friend groom Hill both
[33:37] Speaker 2: play along. You have a few ten cent beers, and
[33:39] Speaker 2: then you have a few more, because why not win
[33:42] Speaker 2: in Rome and all that. By the end of the game,
[33:44] Speaker 2: much like the twenty thousand other fans in Cleveland Municipal Stadium, Elizabeth,
[33:48] Speaker 2: you are now drunk. When you look down at your feet,
[33:51] Speaker 2: you see that you're standing in grass in right center field.
[33:55] Speaker 2: Oh that's right. You came over the outfield fence with
[33:57] Speaker 2: a rush of people. You leapt down into the outfield.
[34:00] Speaker 2: It wasn't that first group who stripped off their clothes
[34:02] Speaker 2: and got nude and are still running around. No, you're
[34:05] Speaker 2: with the second, maybe the third, fourth group, who knows,
[34:07] Speaker 2: who cares? What you know for certain is you're running
[34:10] Speaker 2: and laughing, drunk in Cleveland and on the field. Meanwhile,
[34:13] Speaker 2: Texas Ranger Billy Martin is in his dugout with his
[34:16] Speaker 2: team and he can see his right fielder getting surrounded
[34:18] Speaker 2: by drunk and now armed Cleveland fans. Billy Martin decides
[34:22] Speaker 2: he's seen enough. Billy Martin pops up off the bench.
[34:25] Speaker 2: He grabs a fungo bat for batting practice. He turns
[34:28] Speaker 2: to his team and addresses them like they're his men
[34:31] Speaker 2: and this is war. Billy Martin says, let's go get
[34:34] Speaker 2: them boys. The Texas Rangers, true to their name, follow
[34:37] Speaker 2: their leader into the fray, all of them ready and
[34:39] Speaker 2: prepared to hurt some people to get their man back safely. You, Elizabeth,
[34:43] Speaker 2: are in a happy, drunken nude. You're dancing with Darunhild
[34:46] Speaker 2: in right field with linked arms. You both spin around, run.
[34:49] Speaker 2: Hild is startled, and she lets go of your arm
[34:51] Speaker 2: and you try to take a few steps and regain
[34:53] Speaker 2: your balance. You barely do, just in time to see
[34:56] Speaker 2: Billy Martin coming flying out of the dugout like he's
[34:58] Speaker 2: ready to argue with some umpire over a blown call,
[35:00] Speaker 2: Only this time he has a fungal back over his
[35:02] Speaker 2: head and he's running right towards you, and the Texas
[35:05] Speaker 2: Rangers are right behind him. They also have bats in
[35:08] Speaker 2: their hands and they're using them, swinging them. One drunk
[35:11] Speaker 2: fan who charges Billy Martin, he goes down with a
[35:13] Speaker 2: good swing of the fun go back. Billy Martin has
[35:15] Speaker 2: good reason. They're facing down a mob of drunken fans, Elizabeth,
[35:19] Speaker 2: not you, but the ones around you, the ones who
[35:21] Speaker 2: are armed with bottles, knives, chains, pieces of stadium seating.
[35:26] Speaker 2: Oh yeah, seeing all this, Elizabeth, you also start to
[35:28] Speaker 2: half panded. You're still very drunk, so you quickly look around,
[35:31] Speaker 2: eyes swimming, and you see you're approximately with I don't
[35:34] Speaker 2: know two hundred drunken fans and your coworker, Drunehild, plus
[35:38] Speaker 2: Billy Martin and the Texas Rangers now rushing into the scene,
[35:41] Speaker 2: bats swinging, throwing fists. There's one Texas Ranger there near you,
[35:44] Speaker 2: the right fielder burrows. He's also surrounded. Elizabeth. You duck
[35:47] Speaker 2: as Billy Martin takes a swing at you with his
[35:49] Speaker 2: fungo matt and then he runs past you at age
[35:52] Speaker 2: at some hippie kid. You lie there in the outfield
[35:55] Speaker 2: grass as the Texas Rangers surround their man. The grass
[35:58] Speaker 2: feels cool and soft as you like there. You consider
[36:01] Speaker 2: just staying there in the grass as the fight goes
[36:03] Speaker 2: on above you, but you change your mind after a
[36:05] Speaker 2: pair of nudists streak past, and one waves at you
[36:08] Speaker 2: and looks like they're coming back. The Texas Rangers have
[36:11] Speaker 2: been ambushed. You lying in the cool grass, you watch
[36:13] Speaker 2: this crazy fight going on above you, and the stars
[36:16] Speaker 2: above the fight, you think to yourself, Ah, Cleveland. You
[36:20] Speaker 2: see some fans start throwing red clay dirt from the
[36:22] Speaker 2: warning track at the Texas Rangers. Now you have cheap
[36:25] Speaker 2: fireworks coloring the sky as red dirt explodes against Billy
[36:28] Speaker 2: Martin's angry, shouty face. He's standing just above you, waving
[36:32] Speaker 2: the fun go bat. Can you hear him shout? Let's
[36:34] Speaker 2: get out of here, boys, Elizabeth, you lie in the grasses.
[36:38] Speaker 2: The drunken fans chase Billy Martin and his Texas Rangers
[36:40] Speaker 2: out of the right field. Do you also wonder where
[36:42] Speaker 2: groom Hilda if you haven't seen her? And up there
[36:45] Speaker 2: she goes dancing past with another woman who's stolen a
[36:47] Speaker 2: Texas Rangers ball cap. At least someone got their souvenir
[36:50] Speaker 2: hat good. At this point, Elizabeth, seeing Billy Martin and
[36:54] Speaker 2: the Texas Rangers retreat to their dugout, the Cleveland manager
[36:57] Speaker 2: ken Espermante, he leads a chart of his own to
[37:01] Speaker 2: save and protect Billy Martin and the Texas Rangers. He's
[37:03] Speaker 2: gonna save him for the drunken mob that threatening them.
[37:06] Speaker 2: So Aspermante tells his team to grab their bats, their
[37:08] Speaker 2: fungo bats, whatever they can swing, and it's time to
[37:11] Speaker 2: go to work on their own fans.
[37:12] Speaker 3: Oh your kidds.
[37:13] Speaker 2: So the Cleveland players clear the batracks, they charge out
[37:17] Speaker 2: of the dugout, and they fight their own fans all
[37:20] Speaker 2: across the ballpark to right field to help defend the
[37:23] Speaker 2: retreat of Billy Martin and the Texas Rangers.
[37:26] Speaker 3: The baseball brotherhood is stronger totally, Okay.
[37:29] Speaker 2: Okay, They're on the same level, so elizabe at this
[37:31] Speaker 2: point the game is functionally over. It's a full blown
[37:34] Speaker 2: drunken riot in the Cleveland Municipal Stadium. The crowd has
[37:37] Speaker 2: taken over the field and they're not giving it back.
[37:39] Speaker 2: The local Cleveland radio guys, Herb Score and Joe Tate,
[37:42] Speaker 2: they begin to call the riot for the radio audience.
[37:45] Speaker 2: They're like, why not. Yeah, their talk gets recorded in
[37:47] Speaker 2: the Acron Beacon Journal, so I have some of it
[37:49] Speaker 2: here for you. Oh yeah, Joe Tate will say he's
[37:52] Speaker 2: the first one to start, and then the other guy
[37:54] Speaker 2: is obviously Herb Score. Dom Hilgendor has been hit on
[37:57] Speaker 2: the head. Hilgy is in definite pain. He's bent over
[38:00] Speaker 2: holding his head. Oh. That is an absolute tragedy, absolute tragy.
[38:04] Speaker 2: I've been in this business for over twenty years and
[38:06] Speaker 2: I have never seen anything as disgusting as this. And
[38:10] Speaker 2: I'll be perfectly honest with you. I just don't know
[38:13] Speaker 2: what to say. I don't think this game will continue, Joe.
[38:16] Speaker 2: Unbelievable thing is people keep jumping out of the stands
[38:19] Speaker 2: after they see what's going on. Well, that shows you
[38:22] Speaker 2: the complete lack of brain power on the parts of
[38:24] Speaker 2: some people. There's no way I'm gonna run onto the field.
[38:27] Speaker 2: If I see some baseball player waving a beat out
[38:30] Speaker 2: there looking for somebody, Oh, this is tragic. The whole
[38:33] Speaker 2: thing is degenerated now into just Oh now we've got
[38:36] Speaker 2: another fight going with fans and ballplayers. Oh, Hargrove has
[38:39] Speaker 2: got some kid on the ground and he is administering
[38:42] Speaker 2: a beating. Well, that fella came up and hit him
[38:45] Speaker 2: from behind, is what happened. Boy, Hargrove really puts a
[38:48] Speaker 2: piece of him, and I don't blame him. Look at
[38:51] Speaker 2: Dick Simms out there. He's doing it at it. Yeah,
[38:53] Speaker 2: Duke is in on it. Oh, here we go again,
[38:56] Speaker 2: my god. At this point, Terry Yerkic has escaped them. Okay,
[39:01] Speaker 2: he's now looking on from a safe distance at what
[39:03] Speaker 2: all he started? Then everybody discharges the field and everybody
[39:07] Speaker 2: everybody's on the field. It was out of control. The
[39:09] Speaker 2: police were overwhelmed. So the Cleveland players, the Texas players,
[39:12] Speaker 2: along with their managers Aspermanty and Billy Martin, they fight
[39:15] Speaker 2: their way through the drunken crowd with the bats swinging
[39:18] Speaker 2: fist the whole bit. Some players are hurt at this point.
[39:21] Speaker 2: Other players, regardless of what team they're on, they help
[39:23] Speaker 2: the wounded ones off the field into the tunnels like
[39:26] Speaker 2: they're surviving the beaches of Normandy. Right, the less injured
[39:29] Speaker 2: ones act as a rear guard, and they're swinging the
[39:32] Speaker 2: bats and to keep the crowd from overtaking them. Right,
[39:35] Speaker 2: the players a manager. Their plan is to safely make
[39:37] Speaker 2: it into the dugout, get into the tunnels, and then
[39:40] Speaker 2: lock the doors once they're in the stadium bowels. So
[39:42] Speaker 2: they got to keep the fans off them so they
[39:44] Speaker 2: can get the door locked. Oh god, the players disappeared.
[39:47] Speaker 2: They must have gone into their clubhouse. All over stadium.
[39:49] Speaker 2: So many people were drunk. Somebody threw second base into
[39:53] Speaker 2: the stands. It just did seem dangerous to me at
[39:56] Speaker 2: the time. Terry Yerkisch's gett worried at this point. Right.
[40:00] Speaker 2: Interesting In the Elizabeth, Mike Cargo said nearly the same
[40:02] Speaker 2: kind of thing. Well, he said, and I quote, I
[40:06] Speaker 2: don't remember being scared. I don't remember feeling I was threatened.
[40:09] Speaker 2: I didn't feel that way when it was going on
[40:11] Speaker 2: until we got to the clubhouse. Looking back out there
[40:14] Speaker 2: and what went on and could have gone on, then
[40:18] Speaker 2: I got a little shaky. So they're all seeing their
[40:21] Speaker 2: lives flash before them once they're in safety. At this point,
[40:24] Speaker 2: the teams they lock the doors to the clubhouse. They
[40:26] Speaker 2: bunk are down and they hide out from their drunk,
[40:28] Speaker 2: rampaging Cleveland fans. They can hear them in the hallway
[40:31] Speaker 2: banging on the walls. Oh yeah. Outside on the field,
[40:33] Speaker 2: the fans are ripping apart the field. They've stolen all
[40:36] Speaker 2: the bases. They rip up seats, they throw them onto
[40:38] Speaker 2: the field. They destroy the grass, they take grass for souvenirs.
[40:41] Speaker 2: Hot dogs and beer are still filling the air. Fans
[40:44] Speaker 2: are throwing them out, just at each other, like what
[40:45] Speaker 2: the heck. Souvenir hunters are pocketing anything they can, bats, gloves,
[40:49] Speaker 2: batting gloves, fungo bats. They are like rifling through everything. Right,
[40:53] Speaker 2: the teams barricaded themselves, and they said in their clubhouse,
[40:55] Speaker 2: drunken Cleveland fans are banging on the walls and in
[40:58] Speaker 2: the doors, looting, wilding out. So the radio guys continue
[41:03] Speaker 2: to call this postgame chaos. The security people are just
[41:06] Speaker 2: totally incapable of handling this crowd. They just well, sort
[41:09] Speaker 2: of the National Guard. I'm not sure they can handle
[41:11] Speaker 2: this crowd, right, It's unbelievable, just unbelievable. People will go
[41:14] Speaker 2: back to their seats and others jump down to take
[41:16] Speaker 2: their place. The bases are gone, so they're just losing
[41:20] Speaker 2: it because now you know, they're watching the cathedral get
[41:22] Speaker 2: torn down by the vandals. At this point, the organists
[41:26] Speaker 2: save up there in her perch. She begins to play
[41:29] Speaker 2: take me out to the ballgame, just to Marcus. Meanwhile,
[41:33] Speaker 2: the umpire old nestor Chilac. He has to decide what
[41:36] Speaker 2: to do, right, He's like, I don't want to end
[41:38] Speaker 2: the game. Cleveland's just tied it. Runners were in scoring
[41:41] Speaker 2: position when the game got disrupted in the bottom of
[41:44] Speaker 2: the ninth. Surely these hometown fans, no matter how drunk
[41:47] Speaker 2: and unruly they they telled, just return to their seats
[41:50] Speaker 2: or just clear the field and the home team can win. Nope,
[41:53] Speaker 2: these Cleveland fans well past that, Elizabeth. Yeah, they just
[41:56] Speaker 2: want grass, souvenirs. Blood. Finally, a hunting knife gets at
[42:00] Speaker 2: the umpire and it lands at his feet like blade,
[42:03] Speaker 2: into the grass like hilt, standing up, and then he
[42:05] Speaker 2: gets hit by a piece of stadium seating in the head.
[42:08] Speaker 3: Ohms like the game.
[42:10] Speaker 2: Okay, okay, that's it. He forfeits. He calls the game
[42:12] Speaker 2: and he forfeits it in favor of the Texas Rangers. Yeah,
[42:15] Speaker 2: then he high tails it out of the stadium. The
[42:18] Speaker 2: game is now officially over as far as MLB is concerned.
[42:21] Speaker 2: Nineteen year old who started all this, Terry Yurkic. Yeah,
[42:23] Speaker 2: he's watching the drunken chaos consume all before him. People
[42:26] Speaker 2: were on the field for a long time. They announced
[42:28] Speaker 2: the game was being forfeited, and it got even crazier.
[42:31] Speaker 2: It didn't even into our mind that they had forfeit.
[42:34] Speaker 2: We were all disappointed. But the Indians weren't very good
[42:36] Speaker 2: then anyway. It's like, it's not like it cost him
[42:39] Speaker 2: a pennant or anything.
[42:40] Speaker 3: What do they think would happen?
[42:42] Speaker 2: No, No, they're drunk, Elizabeth, They're very drunk. Pay through anyway.
[42:47] Speaker 2: For twenty minutes, the fans continue to run amok. Now
[42:49] Speaker 2: everyone's gone. That's a long time, Oh totally. Cleveland PD
[42:53] Speaker 2: finally arrives and they now have numbers large enough and
[42:55] Speaker 2: sober cops to calm things down. Nine fans get arrested
[42:59] Speaker 2: for god knows what I mean, Like, I don't know
[43:01] Speaker 2: how you make a distinction of who to arrest. In
[43:03] Speaker 2: the scene, they must have been like absolutely, just murdering
[43:05] Speaker 2: a child or something. Yeah, like exactly. I have no idea.
[43:09] Speaker 2: The Cleveland players, they escorted the Texas Rangers to their
[43:12] Speaker 2: team bus to ensure they can safely escape the stadium. Meanwhile,
[43:15] Speaker 2: localan sportswriter trying to cover the story, Dan Goughlin from
[43:19] Speaker 2: the Chronicle Telegram. He interviews fans streaming out of the stadium.
[43:22] Speaker 2: This sports writer, Elizabeth. He gets punched, not once, but twice,
[43:25] Speaker 2: right in the face. Now back to mad cap Serbian
[43:28] Speaker 2: Terry Yurkic. Nobody in my group was arrested, but we
[43:32] Speaker 2: all got home separately. We didn't watch the news or anything.
[43:34] Speaker 2: We were not in much condition to watch TV. You know,
[43:37] Speaker 2: we weren't worried about getting in trouble once we got
[43:39] Speaker 2: out of the stadium without being arrested. So he made
[43:42] Speaker 2: it out safely. I knew you'd be worried about Terry. Terry,
[43:45] Speaker 2: So when he's asked about the what all just went
[43:47] Speaker 2: down in Cleveland, the Texas Rangers manager Billy Martin says
[43:50] Speaker 2: in his postgame press conference that was the closest you're
[43:53] Speaker 2: ever going to get to seeing someone get killed in
[43:55] Speaker 2: this game of baseball. Burrows seems to be surrounded. Maybe
[43:59] Speaker 2: it was silly for us to go out there, but
[44:00] Speaker 2: we were about to leave a man on the field unprotected.
[44:03] Speaker 2: It seemed that he might be destroyed. He sounds like
[44:08] Speaker 2: Rick Moran's now the manager for Cleveland, asked Bermandi. When
[44:12] Speaker 2: he gets asked about the drunken ambush and like leading
[44:14] Speaker 2: a melee against his own fans, he says, it's not
[44:17] Speaker 2: just baseball, it's a society we live in. Nobody seems
[44:20] Speaker 2: to care about anything. We complained about their people in
[44:23] Speaker 2: Arlington last week when they threw beer on us and
[44:25] Speaker 2: taunted us to fight, But look at our people. They
[44:28] Speaker 2: were worse. I don't know what it was, and I
[44:30] Speaker 2: don't know who's to blame, but I'm scared.
[44:33] Speaker 3: He's not mad, he's disappointed.
[44:35] Speaker 2: Yeah, but I've got some bad news for you about
[44:36] Speaker 2: the future, and more personally, at the end of the season,
[44:40] Speaker 2: I got some other bad news. He becomes the ex manager.
[44:42] Speaker 2: He's fired after Cleveland goes seventy seven and eighty five.
[44:46] Speaker 2: So after the game, the Empire Old Nestor Chilac. He's
[44:49] Speaker 2: interviewed by the press like everybody else, and he holds
[44:51] Speaker 2: a bloody compress to his head during his Intervieweah, in fact,
[44:55] Speaker 2: totally he's notably heated. And he says, and I quote animals,
[45:01] Speaker 2: you can't just you just can't pull back a pack
[45:03] Speaker 2: of animals. But on control beasts are out there. You
[45:06] Speaker 2: gotta do something. I saw two guys with knives and
[45:09] Speaker 2: I got hit with a chair. So the umpire. At
[45:12] Speaker 2: this point, he pauses Elizabeth, he thinks for a hot second.
[45:14] Speaker 2: Then he adds, without any explanation, if the war is
[45:18] Speaker 2: on tomorrow, I'm gonna join the other side to get
[45:20] Speaker 2: a shot at them. Who wants to fight the fans too,
[45:25] Speaker 2: Like Dave Duncan over there. So I like to think
[45:28] Speaker 2: that he's prepared to join the comedies against the USIA.
[45:31] Speaker 2: But I'm guessing he really means like helping the cops
[45:33] Speaker 2: put down the hippie case. So anyway, the Cleveland PD, they,
[45:37] Speaker 2: as I said, they arrived in time to keep things
[45:38] Speaker 2: from getting too far out of control, Like we're still
[45:41] Speaker 2: within our ninety nine percent murder free So in the end,
[45:45] Speaker 2: the cops show up, they turn off the lights, and
[45:46] Speaker 2: they tell everyone to go home. Like Cleveland Municipal Stadium
[45:49] Speaker 2: is a bar, like I'm not even kidding. The cops
[45:51] Speaker 2: is going, they go, you don't have to go home,
[45:52] Speaker 2: but you can't stay here, and they turn off the
[45:54] Speaker 2: lights and it worked. All the drunk people they acted
[45:57] Speaker 2: just like it was a bar kicking in the mouth.
[45:58] Speaker 2: They knew exactly what to do. No quick question. Yeah,
[46:02] Speaker 2: can you imagine the sheer number of drunk drivers on
[46:05] Speaker 2: the road that stadium. I'm thinking like sixteen thousand.
[46:09] Speaker 5: Oh god.
[46:10] Speaker 3: Well, you know it's like anytime there's some big crazy
[46:12] Speaker 3: thing I always think about, like that's the place for
[46:15] Speaker 3: DUI checkpoint.
[46:15] Speaker 2: Oh completely. But then then this is before drunk driving
[46:21] Speaker 2: was even like really a concept people talked about. That's
[46:23] Speaker 2: what people will still go.
[46:24] Speaker 3: Hey, a beer for the road bomb, Yeah, exactly, the
[46:26] Speaker 3: road soda.
[46:28] Speaker 2: So as a post mortem on the riot and the
[46:30] Speaker 2: chaos and Cleveland for their ten cent beer knight, the
[46:32] Speaker 2: American League president Lee McPhail, he comes out, he issues
[46:35] Speaker 2: this edict for all of baseball. All promotional events are
[46:38] Speaker 2: canceled pending league review. And then Elizabeth. One month later
[46:43] Speaker 2: in July, Cleveland holds another ten cent beer knight. No
[46:47] Speaker 2: where did god?
[46:47] Speaker 3: No?
[46:49] Speaker 2: And that time we went off with with that, well,
[46:51] Speaker 2: less of an incident. It wasn't this, So there you go.
[46:54] Speaker 2: And finally, just as our little coda, in nineteen ninety one,
[46:57] Speaker 2: Mike Cargrove returned to Cleveland to the team's manager no
[47:02] Speaker 2: and in his office on his wall he kept a
[47:04] Speaker 2: frame photo of ten cent beering Hight. So, what's our
[47:08] Speaker 2: ridiculous takeaway here, Elizabeth?
[47:10] Speaker 3: Those kind of like crazy events make great stories later on,
[47:14] Speaker 3: but in the moment, it could. I mean, I think
[47:16] Speaker 3: it'd be hilarious. I would love to have been there,
[47:18] Speaker 3: but I think that you know, if you're in the
[47:19] Speaker 3: middle of it and the adrenaline kicks in and it's
[47:22] Speaker 3: could be very scary.
[47:23] Speaker 2: Oh yeah, these were all people were all like one
[47:25] Speaker 2: decision away from like accidentally killing themselves, like falling off something. Really,
[47:30] Speaker 2: I mean, it was a lot of luck in this place.
[47:32] Speaker 3: Yeah, Zarin, what's your ridiculous.
[47:34] Speaker 2: Take Oh my goodness, can I hear that again?
[47:36] Speaker 3: Zaren?
[47:38] Speaker 2: I can't, Dave, she almost did it anyway, I'm just
[47:41] Speaker 2: gonna play that again for myself. One second. Oh that
[47:44] Speaker 2: is nice, Okay, Yeah, my ridiculous takeaway is, you know,
[47:48] Speaker 2: we don't really give baseball it's due for how many
[47:51] Speaker 2: great stories it brought to Americas. We just think like, oh, hockey,
[47:53] Speaker 2: so violent, football, so violent? Man baseball, I.
[47:56] Speaker 3: Love a bench clearing brawn.
[47:58] Speaker 2: I'm telling you right, or coming in like the spikes
[48:00] Speaker 2: out on a slide. I mean, just like, we don't
[48:02] Speaker 2: get baseball enough credit.
[48:03] Speaker 3: You know, everyone thinks it's a slow game. Yeah it is.
[48:07] Speaker 3: Don't and that's why I like it. You know it
[48:10] Speaker 3: has its moment.
[48:11] Speaker 2: Yeah, like don't charge the mound against jan mirishal see.
[48:14] Speaker 2: I'm talking about anyway, you in the mood for a talkback, Elizabeth.
[48:17] Speaker 3: I have always in the mood for a talkbag.
[48:21] Speaker 2: Oh my god. I went get.
[48:31] Speaker 4: Hey, Elizabeth and Zaren. It's Wendy in Baltimore. I listened
[48:35] Speaker 4: to a lot of true crime podcasts. Of course, yours
[48:38] Speaker 4: is ninety nine percent murder free. A lot of the
[48:40] Speaker 4: other ones I listen to are pretty much one hundred
[48:42] Speaker 4: percent murdery. So I was listening to one of those
[48:45] Speaker 4: murdery ones.
[48:46] Speaker 5: And they're setting the stage in the beginning, and in
[48:48] Speaker 5: their very serious, somber tone, they said something like, you know,
[48:52] Speaker 5: it's June twenty first, nineteen ninety one, And immediately my
[48:55] Speaker 5: brain said nineteen ninety one play break.
[49:00] Speaker 2: Yes, this is incredible, you know, that's when that came out, Elizabeth,
[49:04] Speaker 2: nineteen ninety one point break came out.
[49:06] Speaker 3: One point break came out.
[49:08] Speaker 2: So thank you for that talkback. That was fun. And
