At the start of 2024, a conservative mayor of a small charming French seaside nudist resort town was accused of embezzlement and illegal use of city funds. Allegedly, he was secretly paying a fortune-telling ventriloquist, a woman who claimed she could speak with the dead, so that the mayor could hear from his dear departed daddy. The result? Le scandal! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

[0:00] Speaker 1: Ridiculous crime. It's a production of iHeartRadio Elizabethtte.
[0:06] Speaker 2: So good to see my friend. See you be good.
[0:09] Speaker 2: I've been over Well yeah, I got another question for you,
[0:12] Speaker 2: but the easier one to answer. Do you know it's ridiculous? Yes?
[0:14] Speaker 2: I do? What this is?
[0:16] Speaker 3: This is?
[0:16] Speaker 2: This is ridiculous.
[0:17] Speaker 4: Okay, okay, So what do you get when you mix
[0:22] Speaker 4: a cell phone with a very petty drunk girl.
[0:27] Speaker 2: Oh wait, it's not about this. This is all a sudden,
[0:31] Speaker 2: an exciting mix. Go on.
[0:34] Speaker 4: Okay, So there's this lady Rhianna and Evans in Wales
[0:38] Speaker 4: the song ran.
[0:39] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[0:40] Speaker 4: Sure, she's twenty five and she's dating this dude who
[0:48] Speaker 4: you know has an ex girlfriend. Okay, and the boyfriend
[0:52] Speaker 4: her current boyfriend and his ex have a child together.
[0:56] Speaker 2: The boyfriend and his ex have a child together. Yeah.
[1:00] Speaker 4: And so then apparently there's some custody issues and this
[1:03] Speaker 4: rheannon this like new girlfriend. She's you know, she wants
[1:07] Speaker 4: to defend her her love. That's not any of her
[1:11] Speaker 4: business quite frankly. But aside from that, so what she did,
[1:16] Speaker 4: and this started in December of this last year around
[1:19] Speaker 4: the hall, Yeah, yeah, she started sending these videos to
[1:26] Speaker 4: the ex girlfriend.
[1:27] Speaker 2: Oh, like stay away from a man, right, I mean.
[1:29] Speaker 3: It's just so embarrassing when people do that kind of stuff.
[1:33] Speaker 2: Grow up well, also, it reveals it's a it's a
[1:36] Speaker 2: losing energy. It reveals your hanging on. And so it's
[1:39] Speaker 2: like either going and just scare them once or but
[1:42] Speaker 2: don't just keep saying go and scare them once.
[1:44] Speaker 4: She was upset because of this custody thing, and like
[1:47] Speaker 4: how upsetting it was to her boyfriend, this custody and.
[1:50] Speaker 2: When you got a kid involved, I mean you can't
[1:52] Speaker 2: just bum in rows the f up.
[1:54] Speaker 4: So anyway, she really did not grow up. She went
[1:56] Speaker 4: backwards full of hotcheys, went to like five six seven
[2:01] Speaker 4: year old humor. She started she sent videos of herself
[2:07] Speaker 4: farting into the phone. Yeah, she would like to start
[2:11] Speaker 4: the she would she'd take a video of her like
[2:16] Speaker 4: put the phone up to her rear end for bear.
[2:22] Speaker 4: Let's say she was wearing clothes, I don't go, I
[2:25] Speaker 4: beg you, and she'd rip a heater and be like
[2:28] Speaker 4: smirking and send this to the ex girlfriend.
[2:31] Speaker 2: So the ex girlfriend pretty much only gets the sound,
[2:34] Speaker 2: well the visual of like, yeah, but if it's a
[2:36] Speaker 2: clothes you'd have no idea if it's on mute, just you.
[2:41] Speaker 3: Know, it's the sound.
[2:42] Speaker 4: And so she's basically saying, I eat a lot of
[2:44] Speaker 4: fiber in your face.
[2:46] Speaker 2: A fiber?
[2:47] Speaker 3: Is this I'm discussing.
[2:49] Speaker 2: I'm guessed her would be that's not so bad in the.
[2:52] Speaker 3: House, baby, What is this? So she's just like she's
[2:56] Speaker 3: just tuning it up and sending these videos.
[2:59] Speaker 2: And she does she not understand that the really potent
[3:01] Speaker 2: part of a fart is the smell.
[3:04] Speaker 3: Well, I mean for kids though, it's the sound. Sound?
[3:09] Speaker 2: Why does it always it makes me laugh?
[3:11] Speaker 3: Anyway, So anyway, so she sends these, but she starts
[3:14] Speaker 3: sending like.
[3:14] Speaker 2: More and more.
[3:15] Speaker 3: Oh no, and then it becomes harassment, and so she
[3:20] Speaker 3: got arrested.
[3:21] Speaker 2: That's what you're talking about there. Well, Hi, it's a crime.
[3:23] Speaker 3: It's ridiculous.
[3:24] Speaker 4: So it was called it's cyber harassment, and all the
[3:27] Speaker 4: press was calling her the cyber fart. Yeah, And so
[3:31] Speaker 4: the prosecutor was, like, she admitted she sent the videos.
[3:34] Speaker 4: She said she was doing it because her boyfriend was
[3:36] Speaker 4: being treated unfairly. The prosecutor also said, quote it was
[3:40] Speaker 4: purely malicious. She was smirking throughout, found it hilarious. But
[3:45] Speaker 4: the victim didn't, so she gets she gets convicted. Okay,
[3:49] Speaker 4: she would get a twelve month community.
[3:52] Speaker 2: Order, and she did public service.
[3:54] Speaker 4: I guess she had to pay one hundred pounds in
[3:57] Speaker 4: compensation to the X and then one hundred and ninety
[4:01] Speaker 4: nine pounds in costs like fees, and then because she
[4:05] Speaker 4: was totally drunk when she made these, which it's like,
[4:09] Speaker 4: if I'm the ex I'm like, so I'm expected to
[4:12] Speaker 4: send my child to this woman's house who's drunk in Okay, yeah, no, this,
[4:17] Speaker 4: thank you? This works in my favorite for custody anyway,
[4:21] Speaker 4: because she was drunk. She also has to go to
[4:24] Speaker 4: fifteen rehab sessions, yes, and you.
[4:27] Speaker 2: Know rehab sessions like AA.
[4:30] Speaker 4: Meaning they call them rehabilitation sessions in the order. Sure,
[4:35] Speaker 4: and so you know she's only as sick as her secrets.
[4:38] Speaker 2: Quite frankly.
[4:39] Speaker 4: She also has to abstain from alcohol for sixty days
[4:43] Speaker 4: and they.
[4:43] Speaker 2: They have like an ankle monitor, this.
[4:45] Speaker 4: Ankle monitor that takes a sample of her sweat every
[4:48] Speaker 4: thirty minutes, twenty four hours a day.
[4:51] Speaker 2: What have you done to yourself? Girl? Did the boyfriend
[4:54] Speaker 2: stay with her?
[4:56] Speaker 3: I don't know order as well, but why don't.
[5:01] Speaker 2: All of his ability to see his child.
[5:03] Speaker 3: Totally fart monitor that's what she needs.
[5:07] Speaker 4: And then there's like a print out, like a long
[5:09] Speaker 4: piece of paper that comes out that.
[5:12] Speaker 2: I don't remember you saying how old they were? Do
[5:13] Speaker 2: we have any idea how old?
[5:15] Speaker 3: Twenty five too old? He's been with this dude.
[5:21] Speaker 4: The guy and the ex had been together for two years,
[5:24] Speaker 4: and I don't know how long she's been with this guy.
[5:26] Speaker 4: But yeah, he needs to cut his losses.
[5:31] Speaker 2: I don't even know what to make of that. I
[5:33] Speaker 2: know me neither.
[5:34] Speaker 4: Like it's like, ahha oh, this is why we can.
[5:37] Speaker 2: You know, when you see people like I think I've
[5:38] Speaker 2: seen like couples like this or like this triangle in public,
[5:42] Speaker 2: like in airports, bus stations and so forth. You're like
[5:45] Speaker 2: train stations, the public transportation depots. You know, pajama pants.
[5:52] Speaker 2: I was just about to say, you can almost feel
[5:54] Speaker 2: the pajama pants coming off of this.
[5:57] Speaker 3: I think that a lot of the gas is generated
[5:59] Speaker 3: by energy drinks, like I've got a picture of.
[6:03] Speaker 2: My coming from a high fiber diet.
[6:06] Speaker 3: She just eats fiber one bar and drinks and it's
[6:10] Speaker 3: just like a giant, like the un cloud that comes
[6:13] Speaker 3: out of her, so maybe that you could see it.
[6:15] Speaker 2: I don't know. I'm going to certify that ridiculous.
[6:17] Speaker 3: Little thank you, thank you?
[6:19] Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, now if you got a second, because I'm
[6:21] Speaker 2: not trying to like play like, oh I can top that.
[6:23] Speaker 2: But I got something that's seriously very similarly crazy and
[6:26] Speaker 2: it's also from overseas does Well a fortune telling ventriloquist
[6:35] Speaker 2: so good at what she does that she's able to
[6:37] Speaker 2: con the French mayor of the newdest seaside resort town.
[6:44] Speaker 2: It's not a mad lot, I'm about to tell you.
[6:47] Speaker 2: Buckle up, buttercup. This is ridiculous crime a podcast amount
[7:11] Speaker 2: absurd and outrageous capers, heists and cuns. It's always ninety
[7:17] Speaker 2: nine percent murder free and one hundred percent ridiculous.
[7:22] Speaker 3: Oh I'm gonna start howling. Why not?
[7:27] Speaker 2: Yeah, let free, like, let's let your wolf out.
[7:30] Speaker 4: I got neighbors who bang pots and pants when like
[7:33] Speaker 4: big events still doing them? Well no, I mean it
[7:35] Speaker 4: was like, you know, it's when the big events happen. Oh, sure,
[7:39] Speaker 4: old events they bang on pots and pants and okay it's.
[7:45] Speaker 2: Charming, you know what. Yeah, I want people to be
[7:47] Speaker 2: free to express themselves.
[7:48] Speaker 3: That's how I know something has happened. I'm like, oh,
[7:51] Speaker 3: I got the pots and pants.
[7:52] Speaker 2: Speaking are free to express themselves, nudicts, Elizabeth, if I
[7:57] Speaker 2: got a story for you, I've been sitting on this one,
[8:00] Speaker 2: but today I fel like, you know, the right day,
[8:01] Speaker 2: at right time of the year to tell you about
[8:03] Speaker 2: the story of a fortune telling ventriloquist. Who can this mayor,
[8:07] Speaker 2: this French mayor in south of France no less indeed
[8:10] Speaker 2: by using ex seances and like this voice and possibly
[8:14] Speaker 2: some how do you say sex in this voice? Yes? Oh, yeah,
[8:18] Speaker 2: this story. It takes a place along the Mediterranean coast,
[8:21] Speaker 2: right in the south of France, right around the corner
[8:24] Speaker 2: from the French Riviera. So go to the French Ria
[8:26] Speaker 2: Riviera in your imagination. Yeah, and then travel east. Go
[8:29] Speaker 2: so it's closer to Spain than Italy.
[8:31] Speaker 3: Oh it's so travel west?
[8:32] Speaker 2: You mean sorry, yeah west, I'm saying travel from the
[8:34] Speaker 2: east to the west.
[8:35] Speaker 3: Okay.
[8:36] Speaker 2: So then it's a seaside town that's closer to Spain
[8:38] Speaker 2: than to Italy. It's a charming, idyllic, little postcard worthy
[8:41] Speaker 2: spot picture soft sandy beaches, warm days under the sun,
[8:46] Speaker 2: right as you enjoy this cool Mediterranean breeze belowing off
[8:49] Speaker 2: those blue blue waters. Also, everyone's fully naked.
[8:53] Speaker 3: I was like, Oh, I want to be there until
[8:55] Speaker 3: I got to the naked part.
[8:56] Speaker 2: I mentioned that up top. But this little idyllic seaside
[8:59] Speaker 2: town is to the biggest swinger community in Europe. Well
[9:02] Speaker 2: you know, it's a kinster bucket list destination, Elizabeth. It's
[9:06] Speaker 2: a welcome home for naturist aka nudists as we call
[9:09] Speaker 2: them over here. It's also it's also where a lot
[9:12] Speaker 2: of kinds of you know, pardon the expression, eurotrash freak
[9:15] Speaker 2: daddies like to get down and have their freak moments.
[9:18] Speaker 2: It's the preferred location for an appointment with a sex
[9:20] Speaker 2: party if you are you know.
[9:22] Speaker 5: So.
[9:23] Speaker 2: The town is called Cape de Agda, Okay, And now
[9:27] Speaker 2: every year tens of thousands of visitors come to this
[9:30] Speaker 2: beach town to get down and dirty. They strip down,
[9:33] Speaker 2: they meet and greet, they exchange partners, bodily fluids, what
[9:36] Speaker 2: have you. They do it all in this rich, classy,
[9:39] Speaker 2: tasteful South of France kind of vibe. Yeah, having never
[9:42] Speaker 2: been there, I didn't really trust myself to convey to
[9:45] Speaker 2: you what it's like in this charming, idyllic freaks. Oh
[9:48] Speaker 2: way past that girl. We need to understand this, like
[9:52] Speaker 2: this community, it's so part of this story. You need
[9:54] Speaker 2: to understand it when you're picturing what I'm about to
[9:56] Speaker 2: tell you.
[9:57] Speaker 3: I got a Google street view. Yes, so it's there's
[10:00] Speaker 3: people walking around with nicked on the Googles.
[10:03] Speaker 2: I thought about that. I didn't even know the cars
[10:06] Speaker 2: going through a bumping.
[10:07] Speaker 3: Into the body bus parading his gall exactly?
[10:11] Speaker 2: Is that everywhere every week? Yeah? So, as I said,
[10:14] Speaker 2: do you go from like the French Riviera, you know
[10:16] Speaker 2: where that is, and then you go around that little
[10:18] Speaker 2: bump and in France and then you run down south
[10:20] Speaker 2: towards Spain down there like apparently know Brits like to
[10:24] Speaker 2: go there, because I found a lot of British papers
[10:26] Speaker 2: like the stories going and they send a journalist like
[10:28] Speaker 2: I stripped down and I winded to this town right
[10:30] Speaker 2: and then.
[10:30] Speaker 4: The exactly I saw a museum like there was like
[10:37] Speaker 4: what do you call it?
[10:38] Speaker 3: How do you say?
[10:39] Speaker 2: Display?
[10:40] Speaker 4: Exhibit about naturalists? Naturalists? I know how to talk today?
[10:49] Speaker 4: Knew in France and like the history.
[10:51] Speaker 2: Oh I bet that's interesting. It really was. It was
[10:54] Speaker 2: an exhibition and.
[10:56] Speaker 4: It was like with the photographs, photographs and all these
[10:58] Speaker 4: like written materials they and kind of like promotional pamphlets
[11:03] Speaker 4: and films.
[11:03] Speaker 3: So there are you know, naked people and.
[11:05] Speaker 2: You're just looking at it and probably.
[11:08] Speaker 3: Naked people for the first time in my life.
[11:10] Speaker 2: Don't tell system Mary pat exactly.
[11:12] Speaker 4: But it was really interesting and like the connections with
[11:15] Speaker 4: various like pseudoscience, real science, weird like you know, social
[11:22] Speaker 4: movement exactly.
[11:23] Speaker 2: Say this springs off of that those fifties and sixties
[11:26] Speaker 2: social movements. There's like two different waves, I guess. And
[11:29] Speaker 2: then you have that the natureists back to let's go
[11:32] Speaker 2: back to literally nature, and then also sun worshiping kind
[11:36] Speaker 2: of like to want to get the side energy on
[11:38] Speaker 2: the body, so expose the skin. Yeah, it's a really
[11:41] Speaker 2: interesting like progression of thought, right you go. Also, architecture
[11:45] Speaker 2: is part of this town story, so they're refusing like
[11:47] Speaker 2: ly Cobursier's ideas and stuff. Okay, anyway to get back
[11:51] Speaker 2: to the the British journalists who are actually there walking
[11:54] Speaker 2: around these streets. I found in the Italian and British
[11:57] Speaker 2: fashion outlet gra Grazzia. They sent some unnamed staff writer.
[12:03] Speaker 2: They wouldn't put their name on this right, but they
[12:05] Speaker 2: tell us, and I quote, the village itself is roughly
[12:08] Speaker 2: one square mile and has everything you'd expect or need
[12:11] Speaker 2: from a French holiday resort. Bou lingerie, patesserie, hairdressers, cinema bars,
[12:17] Speaker 2: clubs and restaurants, clothes shops, bucket and spades stores, selection
[12:22] Speaker 2: of be steel themed latex gimps masks, your usual vacation needs.
[12:28] Speaker 2: There's that dry British witch. So other than the be
[12:31] Speaker 2: steel themed latex gimp masks, what else? How else could
[12:36] Speaker 2: you encapsulate this vibe, well, the vibe in Ogda, because
[12:39] Speaker 2: you never really want to rely on just one source, Elizabeth,
[12:41] Speaker 2: and this is as true as in life as it
[12:43] Speaker 2: is in journalism. True. I checked out a write up
[12:45] Speaker 2: in The Guardian from twenty fifteen and according to the
[12:47] Speaker 2: Guardian's account, the town of Copdag, also the journals went
[12:51] Speaker 2: Nude was a quote small nudist campsite dating back to
[12:54] Speaker 2: nineteen fifty eight. So it's just like you were saying,
[12:57] Speaker 2: and you know, basically kind of points out the Gramma
[12:59] Speaker 2: and Grandpa they in Kinky two, like we've been like
[13:01] Speaker 2: this forever, right, They're.
[13:02] Speaker 4: Like two camps is my understanding. There's the kinky and
[13:05] Speaker 4: then there are the people who were just like, you.
[13:07] Speaker 2: Know, we are that's cool. It's very humble sexual about that.
[13:13] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[13:14] Speaker 2: They just want to live where the sun can see everything.
[13:16] Speaker 3: Right.
[13:16] Speaker 2: So the story of Kype Daga goes in the nineteen
[13:18] Speaker 2: sixties under Charles de gaulf the French wanted to develop
[13:21] Speaker 2: this tourist economy for the region. They're like, how do
[13:23] Speaker 2: we pull ourselves out of the post war period all
[13:25] Speaker 2: was just do tourism, right, and so they tried to
[13:28] Speaker 2: create this seaside resort town and then it ends up
[13:31] Speaker 2: that they picked it where there was already this newdest
[13:33] Speaker 2: beach area. So this newdest beach they's like, well, now
[13:35] Speaker 2: it's the newdest beach resort, right. So this quasi hippie
[13:39] Speaker 2: moment in France that we've talked about, there's this group,
[13:41] Speaker 2: the Ultra Brothers, who had erected the first nudist campsite
[13:44] Speaker 2: and they were still there, so they put their stamp
[13:47] Speaker 2: on this and so by the seventies it becomes this
[13:49] Speaker 2: world famous naturist and nudist vacation spot. Everyone's like, oh,
[13:53] Speaker 2: you got to go in the south of France, there's
[13:54] Speaker 2: this newest place and boom. Now, if you ask the
[13:58] Speaker 2: Charles Bezier, who was the director of Cape dog Does
[14:01] Speaker 2: tourist office back in twenty fifteen, and he was sighted
[14:03] Speaker 2: in The Guardian, he would have told you that nudity
[14:06] Speaker 2: was built into the DNA of this vacation destination spot.
[14:10] Speaker 2: According to this tourist office director, he said, and I quote,
[14:13] Speaker 2: Cape Dogda was integrated as part of a whole with
[14:16] Speaker 2: the same principles of architectural unity, prioritizing pedestrians and proximity
[14:20] Speaker 2: to the sea. All right, so it's this town that's
[14:23] Speaker 2: designed for lush living in every possible way. So imagine
[14:27] Speaker 2: now Elizabeth is south of France, resort town. Forty thousand people,
[14:30] Speaker 2: young and old alike. Everyone's stark naked. Now not only
[14:34] Speaker 2: I mean like young and old alike, but it's mandatory
[14:37] Speaker 2: that you be naked, like you have to be all
[14:39] Speaker 2: the time. Yeah. In fact, there's a.
[14:40] Speaker 3: Natural like not just when you're on the beach, but
[14:43] Speaker 3: like walking.
[14:43] Speaker 2: Around you walk in, you gotta stritch down the library. Yeah,
[14:45] Speaker 2: there's like well there's one way into the town and
[14:48] Speaker 2: there's like a gate and you gotta walk through the gate.
[14:50] Speaker 2: When you go to the gate, you gotta sort it
[14:52] Speaker 2: out with them, pay to enter, strip down, and then
[14:54] Speaker 2: go be a nudist. Interesting, Okay, Now there's from what
[14:58] Speaker 2: I understand, some laxity of about this recently since like
[15:01] Speaker 2: post COVID especially, there's been some lax city about people
[15:04] Speaker 2: having clothed. So some people can walk around, so not
[15:06] Speaker 2: everybody it used to be at least in up to
[15:08] Speaker 2: twenty fifteen mandatory. Wow. Yeah, So the idea was that
[15:13] Speaker 2: there was this natural divide as like you know, like
[15:15] Speaker 2: imagine like a jetty if you will, separating this town
[15:18] Speaker 2: the seaside. You can't just like swim up to the
[15:20] Speaker 2: wrong beach. So there it is, with this guarded entry
[15:23] Speaker 2: point you pass through and then went to pass through
[15:25] Speaker 2: the gate. Clothing is forbidden also, so as photography obviously,
[15:28] Speaker 2: so people can be you know, very demure, hold space
[15:31] Speaker 2: for their body. Now in this OGDA you can do
[15:33] Speaker 2: your normal business. As the writer for The Guardian reported
[15:36] Speaker 2: from Old Naked City, quote, every facet of ordinary life
[15:39] Speaker 2: city is here. A bank, a post office, several supermarkets,
[15:43] Speaker 2: concrete arcades lined with hairdressers, fishmongers, opticians and clothes boutiques
[15:49] Speaker 2: throughout fully dressed staff, a formality the apparently developed of
[15:52] Speaker 2: its own record cater with surreal nonchalance to the great unclothed.
[15:56] Speaker 2: So the people working are dressed. The people who are
[15:58] Speaker 2: there as tourists are nude.
[16:00] Speaker 3: That's interesting because I imagine like you're at the hairdresser
[16:03] Speaker 3: and like they're leaning over you to like some are
[16:06] Speaker 3: wash your hair, and then you've got boobs in your face.
[16:08] Speaker 3: Some of that that for some that might be a selling.
[16:11] Speaker 2: It might be extra. They play extra autometrist.
[16:14] Speaker 3: And you're just sitting there, like they put paper down
[16:17] Speaker 3: on seats, a.
[16:17] Speaker 2: Lot of paper, A lot I imagine a lot of
[16:19] Speaker 2: papers are getting putt down a lot of places the uh.
[16:21] Speaker 2: But some of the people are nude. So like it's
[16:23] Speaker 2: like I read about some bar owners and when waiters
[16:25] Speaker 2: and restaurant owners and they're all like, I'm also a nudist.
[16:28] Speaker 2: That's why I've been here for thirteen years. So you'll
[16:31] Speaker 2: see a mix. So you walk in, some of the
[16:32] Speaker 2: waiters are naked, some are not. I don't know where
[16:34] Speaker 2: they're pinning, like their name tag.
[16:35] Speaker 4: They go to clear the table and they're like, excuse me,
[16:38] Speaker 4: pardon my reach, and now you've got crotch in your face. Yeah,
[16:42] Speaker 4: I just keep thinking of violations of my.
[16:44] Speaker 2: All the hair flying around every I mean like that violations. Yeah, sure, yeah.
[16:50] Speaker 2: The general clothing rule at the Seaside resort is simple. Quote,
[16:54] Speaker 2: we do ask that guests are dressed for breakfast, but
[16:57] Speaker 2: in the spa, rooftop and pool nudity is composed. You
[17:00] Speaker 2: were also forbidden from wearing swimwear on the beach. So
[17:04] Speaker 2: since it'schure up and since it's newdiced that this means
[17:06] Speaker 2: like all ages, by the way, from juniors to elders.
[17:09] Speaker 2: So you might see a quote grandmother aged beauty and
[17:11] Speaker 2: her sea through pouchy captain and d ring pierce nipples.
[17:15] Speaker 2: But also you may see like young children. So if
[17:18] Speaker 2: you're wondering, some folks bring their whole family on the
[17:20] Speaker 2: vacation to this free swing and freak party. As the
[17:24] Speaker 2: Guardian on a documented and I quote, by day, everything
[17:27] Speaker 2: is quite pg with families and couples wandering around doing
[17:30] Speaker 2: family pedestrian holiday. Things come darkness and the switch from
[17:33] Speaker 2: naturists to lifestyle happens.
[17:35] Speaker 3: Oh see, that's what I was wondering, Like, is it
[17:37] Speaker 3: all freaky.
[17:40] Speaker 2: Day night? Exactly? Da night. Yeap. So let's take a
[17:44] Speaker 2: little break and after this I'll tell you what happens
[17:46] Speaker 2: when the lifestyle happens. Elizabeth Zaren you ready to find
[18:10] Speaker 2: out what the lifestyle is like when it happens?
[18:12] Speaker 3: I guess yeah. I'm trying to, you know, I I
[18:16] Speaker 3: know that I hurt a lot of furries feelings and
[18:19] Speaker 3: a lot of magic, the gathering folks, feelings, me being judgmental, sure,
[18:24] Speaker 3: and I'm trying to get away with from that. So
[18:26] Speaker 3: I'm trying to, like, you know what, Furries, I love you,
[18:29] Speaker 3: you do you? Same with the magic, the gathering around cards.
[18:35] Speaker 2: I care? Almost got close. We'll try and get work
[18:39] Speaker 2: on this.
[18:40] Speaker 3: But anyway, yeah, you know what, I am not gonna And.
[18:42] Speaker 2: Also who cares what a podcast host says?
[18:44] Speaker 3: I mean, really can we get down to that? And
[18:47] Speaker 3: anything I say is a total crock of.
[18:50] Speaker 2: Either it's either it's enjoyable and funny, which is about
[18:53] Speaker 2: our job, or it's like I didn't need that opinion.
[18:55] Speaker 2: You ignore. Ignore.
[18:57] Speaker 3: You have no idea how much stuff I ignore all day?
[18:59] Speaker 2: Yes, what you say, I'm well, I'm not going to
[19:01] Speaker 2: listen to that. Who knows?
[19:03] Speaker 3: Who cares?
[19:03] Speaker 2: And I only listened to ten percent of what I say.
[19:07] Speaker 3: Anyway, continue, So, yeah, we're gonna go check out the lifestyle.
[19:10] Speaker 2: Yeah you ready, let's do it.
[19:11] Speaker 3: I'm I'm ready.
[19:12] Speaker 2: Yeah. Well you want to take off a couple of
[19:14] Speaker 2: pieces of clothing?
[19:14] Speaker 3: No, So first of all, it's freezing in here.
[19:19] Speaker 4: Second of all, I am I am not someone who
[19:22] Speaker 4: shows a lot of.
[19:24] Speaker 2: I'm getting paid by AhR.
[19:25] Speaker 3: Just a second's admiral, iHeart, it was really quick. Well
[19:31] Speaker 3: they got the whole place bug so.
[19:33] Speaker 2: Well, Elizabeth the Lifestyle, the Guardian did this writer who
[19:37] Speaker 2: went around by the way, as I teld you, nude
[19:39] Speaker 2: like took off her clothing, had like a partner there.
[19:41] Speaker 2: I was like, doing the life.
[19:43] Speaker 4: Well, you can't get people to talk to you if
[19:45] Speaker 4: you're there. Well, first of all, you have to take
[19:47] Speaker 4: your clothes.
[19:47] Speaker 2: Off there if you want to look through the gate. Right,
[19:49] Speaker 2: So they report and I quote as the bars and
[19:52] Speaker 2: clubs open, the Harbourside promenade resembles a fantasy catwalk with
[19:56] Speaker 2: fetish finery of all types trying not to be prudishly
[20:00] Speaker 2: British and splutter her into my apparol. As I witnessed
[20:03] Speaker 2: a man be led along by a leash connected to
[20:05] Speaker 2: a sort of testicle dog collar, or a woman wearing
[20:08] Speaker 2: a cutout detailed skirt which solely focused on heroing the
[20:12] Speaker 2: vagina was a challenge.
[20:16] Speaker 3: Was this the.
[20:19] Speaker 2: Bars and clubs open?
[20:20] Speaker 4: I see see okay, and she's got a skirt on.
[20:24] Speaker 4: Why would you make a cutout just take the skirt
[20:27] Speaker 4: off to hero?
[20:28] Speaker 2: Well, it's a hero anyway. It's kind of like it's
[20:31] Speaker 2: overwhelming and then also becomes it becomes underwhelming. And she says, quote,
[20:35] Speaker 2: when you've seen fifty penises on your walk to breakfast,
[20:38] Speaker 2: the fifty first doesn't feel like a big deal.
[20:40] Speaker 4: Yeah, I would you would you would get to nude
[20:43] Speaker 4: numb or you pass hey cold today?
[20:46] Speaker 2: Yeah?
[20:46] Speaker 5: I know.
[20:47] Speaker 2: Well, nudity and may be brazen sometimes it's in very
[20:50] Speaker 2: nipple forward. Officially, sexual intercourse in public is banned. Right,
[20:54] Speaker 2: there's broadly a steep fine. If you're caught bumping joy button.
[20:56] Speaker 2: You cannot do that. Now, this whole seaside resort town,
[21:00] Speaker 2: everyone nude everywhere, as I said, except for the working folks,
[21:02] Speaker 2: the waiters, the shopkeepers, so forth. Who's policing this place?
[21:07] Speaker 2: They are their nude cops walking around with like a
[21:09] Speaker 2: utility belt, with like a badge and some handcuffs and
[21:11] Speaker 2: like the hat radio. And for the private clubs, they
[21:16] Speaker 2: rely on the discretion and force of private security because
[21:19] Speaker 2: remember it's just a mile by a mile. They're just
[21:20] Speaker 2: not that big. But it's got a lot of marks.
[21:22] Speaker 2: There's a lot of people apparently, it's like, what are
[21:24] Speaker 2: you gonna do?
[21:25] Speaker 4: This is this an actual like incorporated town or public
[21:30] Speaker 4: streets and they can yet they can stop you on
[21:33] Speaker 4: the way in interesting.
[21:35] Speaker 2: Yeah. So during the busy summer season, the French authorities
[21:38] Speaker 2: they send in members of this elite French police division
[21:41] Speaker 2: and they task them with keeping the influx of tourists
[21:44] Speaker 2: under control. I wanted you to guess what they call
[21:47] Speaker 2: this will be French police, but I was like, it's
[21:49] Speaker 2: probably not the y SVU. Anyway, this summer is also
[21:52] Speaker 2: the time of year when Ogna play host to the
[21:54] Speaker 2: most families. Right, So you got this little tiny nude
[21:56] Speaker 2: to seaside rese are people everywhere. You need someone to
[21:59] Speaker 2: run it. You need like a as I said, right now,
[22:02] Speaker 2: when it comes to crime, the safest place apparently is
[22:04] Speaker 2: the Sandy Beach. One foreign bar owner and Agda, a
[22:07] Speaker 2: man named no Joke Johnny walker, just like the liquor brand.
[22:11] Speaker 2: I just assume American. And he explained the low crime
[22:14] Speaker 2: rate on the beach with his American simplicity of reasoning,
[22:17] Speaker 2: and I quote, where's the shop left? You're supposed to
[22:19] Speaker 2: hide his swag up? Well, you know, I love a
[22:23] Speaker 2: challenge the general lack of crime. Obviously this leads to
[22:28] Speaker 2: a lax attitude that the French they call it ben alize.
[22:32] Speaker 2: So it's apparently this laysaf fair attitude is why the
[22:35] Speaker 2: beach is. It's clean, it's hygienic, but from what I read,
[22:38] Speaker 2: it could use its fresh coat of paint. And so
[22:40] Speaker 2: I'm like, somebody should probably fix the boardwalk. Okay, right,
[22:43] Speaker 2: But as I said, I don't want to just rely
[22:45] Speaker 2: on journalists. I also decided, you know who else can
[22:48] Speaker 2: really root me here? Trip Advisor Elizabeth. I was like,
[22:51] Speaker 2: well that's what Elizabeth would. I got a review for you.
[22:54] Speaker 2: Oh yeah, from a trip Advisor user named keefeld Trucker.
[22:59] Speaker 2: We have the review from September twenty twenty four. This
[23:02] Speaker 2: is reason such a gift. I love stuff like this,
[23:04] Speaker 2: like a theme park. Once you're in, you're in, and
[23:07] Speaker 2: they have you somewhat literally by the testiculars. We stayed
[23:10] Speaker 2: in Naturiva Spa, tired and not worth the cash. In
[23:14] Speaker 2: my book, I stay in mini hotels throughout the year
[23:16] Speaker 2: with work, and this was at best very average. Food
[23:19] Speaker 2: was decent. Most places we ate were nice. We tend
[23:22] Speaker 2: to do for late lunch and then some top us
[23:24] Speaker 2: per evening top up before going out. Clubs and bars
[23:27] Speaker 2: are super expensive. It seemed to only play club music loud.
[23:32] Speaker 2: It's not a Beitha. The demographic is so mixed they
[23:35] Speaker 2: should cater a bit more for other tastes. I don't
[23:38] Speaker 2: know what that last line means, which just sounds like
[23:40] Speaker 2: he wants he.
[23:42] Speaker 3: Wants like a jazz bar, like a piano bar.
[23:44] Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it's KAO. So it sounds like basically
[23:48] Speaker 2: it's like a cruise ship or a conference in like Vegas.
[23:51] Speaker 2: Sounds like it's a key part of this review I
[23:53] Speaker 2: left out that I got to share with you. We
[23:54] Speaker 2: were there for bike Week, which is pretty cool. Can't
[23:56] Speaker 2: beat the sound of Harley's All Day Wait bike Week, Elizabeth,
[24:02] Speaker 2: you know what I'm accepting of you? Do you?
[24:04] Speaker 3: Bike Week?
[24:06] Speaker 2: So this charming, idyllic French seaside resort town Chocolate block
[24:09] Speaker 2: with nude bikers just pressing their copious hairy flesh into
[24:13] Speaker 2: those leather saddles of their harleys. Listening, Elizabeth, you were
[24:18] Speaker 2: wondering what the verdict was quote over all, the village
[24:20] Speaker 2: is cool. It's very tired, though, for the money you
[24:23] Speaker 2: pay everywhere, plus the visitor tax and entry, it would
[24:26] Speaker 2: be nice to see some investment. Litter, weeds, bins, et cetera.
[24:30] Speaker 2: All need addressed. If you want to cater for adults
[24:33] Speaker 2: willing to spend, make it a pleasant environment. Will we return?
[24:37] Speaker 2: Probably we will do a good bit of research and
[24:40] Speaker 2: searching out a good property next time. So it really
[24:43] Speaker 2: is more of a review of natural riva spas what
[24:44] Speaker 2: I'm reading.
[24:45] Speaker 3: It's kind yeah, but he's saying the rest weeds everywhere.
[24:48] Speaker 4: Yeah, Hey, it's just like naked myrtle beach is what
[24:51] Speaker 4: it's kinda right.
[24:52] Speaker 2: So I found Jackie T from La who rode in
[24:54] Speaker 2: September of twenty twenty two that she had one hell
[24:58] Speaker 2: of a time at the French seaside resort town and
[25:01] Speaker 2: the title to her review kind of tips her hand.
[25:03] Speaker 2: If you need any kind of medical attention, good luck
[25:09] Speaker 2: remember all notice, So did I pick out a doctor.
[25:12] Speaker 2: I am a doctor. Is Jackie t Reports quote. My
[25:16] Speaker 2: husband and I are visiting from the United States. I
[25:18] Speaker 2: ended up getting COVID and I needed a PCR test
[25:21] Speaker 2: for my travel insurance company or any kind of legit
[25:24] Speaker 2: COVID test. No one that worked here was helpful at all.
[25:26] Speaker 2: The doctor on site was closed Thursday at two pm.
[25:30] Speaker 2: I asked the woman working at the entrance where the
[25:32] Speaker 2: closest hospital was, and she didn't even know. Went to
[25:35] Speaker 2: the pharmacy across the street. They had no idea where
[25:38] Speaker 2: to get a test or where the hospital was. Either.
[25:40] Speaker 2: You're a pharmacist, you should probably know that. I looked
[25:43] Speaker 2: up the closest twenty four hour hospital asked if they
[25:45] Speaker 2: spoke English since my travel insurance company recommended them, and
[25:48] Speaker 2: said they did. The guy who answered the phone said
[25:51] Speaker 2: no and hung up on me. My husband has such
[25:53] Speaker 2: a hard time finding a restaurant that could do takeaway
[25:55] Speaker 2: for me since I had to quarantine. I get it.
[25:58] Speaker 2: I don't speak French, but I know the basics and
[26:01] Speaker 2: have a translation app. The most helpful person here was
[26:04] Speaker 2: our Airbnb host. One out of five would not recommend.
[26:08] Speaker 3: Oh my god, they're like the nightmare Americans.
[26:11] Speaker 2: When was it twenty twenty two September? Make us all
[26:16] Speaker 2: look bad? Oh god?
[26:19] Speaker 3: You know she's in there raising her voice, demanding COVID
[26:24] Speaker 3: tests and they're probably on the shelf behind the pharmacists.
[26:27] Speaker 3: And the pharmacist is like.
[26:29] Speaker 2: You know, maybe you should try London. I love the
[26:36] Speaker 2: d speak English. No tell us her husband running around naked.
[26:39] Speaker 2: Where gonna get a COVID test?
[26:42] Speaker 3: I want three chicken strips to go.
[26:46] Speaker 2: Well.
[26:46] Speaker 4: And you know what, like I've been not to this town,
[26:50] Speaker 4: to this region, and like Thursday at two pm, ain't nothing.
[26:54] Speaker 2: No, you're not going to find it. No, but you know, well,
[26:58] Speaker 2: I've kind of given you this environment. You can picture
[27:00] Speaker 2: the crime. Are you ready to me?
[27:02] Speaker 3: Like making cable Wabbo.
[27:04] Speaker 2: The fortune telling ventriloquist in the middle of this, Oh
[27:08] Speaker 2: forgot about the mayor of all of this, Oh god,
[27:11] Speaker 2: until the mayor at the time was a fifty five
[27:13] Speaker 2: year old man named j's Del. I'm gonna be speaking French.
[27:17] Speaker 2: I apologize anybody who speaks French. I'll be trying, said,
[27:22] Speaker 2: I'll be trying. I'm not gonna know this time, won't
[27:23] Speaker 2: be making fun of you like I do other times.
[27:25] Speaker 2: So anyway.
[27:26] Speaker 3: He well, I always, I mean, I don't like I
[27:28] Speaker 3: think you try.
[27:29] Speaker 2: I try sometimes I do like a pepula pia. So
[27:33] Speaker 2: everybody knows that it's a joke.
[27:35] Speaker 3: Trying to be I try. I do my damnedest. Like
[27:39] Speaker 3: you know, I fall short.
[27:41] Speaker 2: I know why I fall shorter. So that's why I
[27:43] Speaker 2: can look up and see you and I'm like, oh, Elizabeth,
[27:45] Speaker 2: I'm down here. So this guy, he's a he's a
[27:48] Speaker 2: police officer. Right. Then he becomes a French Secret service
[27:50] Speaker 2: officer and in two thousand and one he gets elected
[27:53] Speaker 2: mayor of this nudist town. And his father had been
[27:56] Speaker 2: in local politics, and so everybody was like, let's just
[27:58] Speaker 2: take his idiot son as a safe grow up against
[28:01] Speaker 2: the Socialist Party. Yeah. So so Gios dietur It was
[28:06] Speaker 2: a Minister of Parliament between two thousand and seven twenty twelve,
[28:09] Speaker 2: part of Jacques Scharrox Party the Union for a Popular Movement.
[28:13] Speaker 2: At the time, he was one of the two major
[28:14] Speaker 2: French political parties. It was the Liberal Conservative Party and
[28:17] Speaker 2: then the other party was the Socialists. Yeah, and this
[28:19] Speaker 2: party no longer exists because France, you can reap you.
[28:22] Speaker 2: Oh yeah, make a new party.
[28:23] Speaker 3: All the time, they realized that the world of life evolved.
[28:27] Speaker 2: And that party shouldn't last like forever, like beautiful trees. Yeah.
[28:30] Speaker 2: So this party no longer exists and was replaced in
[28:32] Speaker 2: twenty fifteen by Nicholas Sarkozzi's Republicans Party. That's Republicans plural,
[28:36] Speaker 2: yeah with a Q. Yeah. No, this is what he
[28:39] Speaker 2: looks like, the conservative French politician of this seaside resort town.
[28:43] Speaker 2: Got a good idea of him. Yeah, I'm trying to
[28:45] Speaker 2: imagine it with no clothes on. Now. The other crimer
[28:47] Speaker 2: of our day is the aforementioned fortune teller with the
[28:50] Speaker 2: ventriloquism skills, a forty four year old mother of six
[28:54] Speaker 2: named Sophia Martinez. On Facebook, she describes her professions as
[28:58] Speaker 2: quote a medium, hypnotherapist, and healer. Means don't we all?
[29:03] Speaker 2: I know you do now? She uses chigong as to
[29:06] Speaker 2: direct energies, right okay. She also says that she is
[29:09] Speaker 2: quite a specialist in the cleansing of energy for pipos
[29:11] Speaker 2: in places, so you see, not just people Elizabeth places.
[29:15] Speaker 2: She can like psychically dust your home maybe, like if
[29:18] Speaker 2: you need, like so someone to come down and free
[29:20] Speaker 2: a curse from your clubhouse. She's your girl. Okay, In
[29:22] Speaker 2: case you were wondering, this is what Sophia Martinez looks like. Wait,
[29:27] Speaker 2: oh okay, right, businesswoman. She looks like she gonna come
[29:30] Speaker 2: in and like fire everybody right now. According to the
[29:32] Speaker 2: French newspapers I read, these two met back in twenty twenty.
[29:36] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[29:36] Speaker 2: Now the reason they met with Sofia had a reputation
[29:38] Speaker 2: around town. And you may be wondering what she could
[29:41] Speaker 2: do to get a reputation in this freaky French nudist
[29:43] Speaker 2: seaside resort town. Well it turns out Sophia could speak
[29:48] Speaker 2: with the dead.
[29:49] Speaker 3: Well that'll get you a rep.
[29:51] Speaker 2: Yeah, that's gonna be people anna talk. Yeah, now this
[29:54] Speaker 2: is the word on the street, you know. Sofia she
[29:56] Speaker 2: talks with the dead, And I was like, oh, how
[29:57] Speaker 2: about she charged right?
[29:58] Speaker 3: So she looks like quite the seductress.
[30:00] Speaker 2: I must say. Yeah, there is that aspect too, So
[30:03] Speaker 2: we'll get to that in a second now. According to
[30:05] Speaker 2: the mayor's lawyer, Jiles met Sophia after he'd heard about
[30:08] Speaker 2: her and after he'd suffered a personal tragedy his father
[30:11] Speaker 2: passed away. The mayor heard that this new misfortune teller
[30:13] Speaker 2: could help him reconnect with his departed daddy, So he
[30:17] Speaker 2: has to meet with her, and at their first seance,
[30:19] Speaker 2: Sophia was able to channel the spirit of the Mayor's
[30:21] Speaker 2: deer departed daddy. He was ecstatic he had to hear
[30:25] Speaker 2: from his father across the Great Divide Elizabeth.
[30:28] Speaker 3: From a naked lady.
[30:29] Speaker 2: Yes. After that first taste of Sophia's powers to speak
[30:32] Speaker 2: with the dead, the mayor was hooked. Yeah, and he's like,
[30:35] Speaker 2: I go back. I got to go back to that
[30:36] Speaker 2: naked lady who sounds like my dad. So another local
[30:39] Speaker 2: who had also lost her mother back in twenty seventeen,
[30:41] Speaker 2: she recalled to the French press how this all worked
[30:44] Speaker 2: and how she'd also relied on Sophia Martinez's ole connection
[30:47] Speaker 2: to help her speak with her dear departed mother. During
[30:50] Speaker 2: her first seance, Sophia told the woman that her power
[30:53] Speaker 2: to connect with her mother was also indicative that her
[30:55] Speaker 2: mother wished for her to duke the fortune teller with
[30:58] Speaker 2: some franks. Yeah, so as a pen moved on the
[31:02] Speaker 2: desk without any rational cause that this woman could perceive,
[31:05] Speaker 2: Sophia reportedly told the woman, it is your mother who
[31:09] Speaker 2: is signaling to you, she's asking you to help me.
[31:14] Speaker 2: That's a direct quote. That first seance cost her two
[31:17] Speaker 2: hundred euros, right, So the woman went for it and
[31:20] Speaker 2: then she's hooked. Right. So she estimated that over three
[31:22] Speaker 2: years she spent ten thousand euros. Whoa just trying to
[31:26] Speaker 2: talk to her mom naked lady a naked lady telephone.
[31:30] Speaker 2: So when it came to the mayor, Sofia went all
[31:32] Speaker 2: out right and her seances with the mayor. She called
[31:34] Speaker 2: herself an arch angel. She won the mayor's trust pretty quickly.
[31:38] Speaker 2: But how does she did it? Is really quite incredible
[31:40] Speaker 2: or in French all cray so. But rather than me
[31:44] Speaker 2: tell you about Elizabeth, close your eyes.
[31:46] Speaker 4: I am both excited and terrified like you to picture it.
[31:51] Speaker 2: It's a weekday evening and cape day actor and you, Elizabeth,
[31:54] Speaker 2: are an orange cat, an agent of chaos. You live
[31:57] Speaker 2: in the home of Sofia Martinez, resident psychic media and
[32:00] Speaker 2: communicator with the dead. You've watched her do her act
[32:03] Speaker 2: as a flesh telephone to the other side, and you
[32:06] Speaker 2: are not impressed. But still you sit on a high backed,
[32:09] Speaker 2: velvet upholstered chair as incense wafts past you. Soft and
[32:13] Speaker 2: Lousian folk music plays from the radio of the volume low.
[32:16] Speaker 2: It sets a mood. Seated next to you on a
[32:18] Speaker 2: similar chairs Gios de'e tour, the mayor of Cape de
[32:21] Speaker 2: Dog across the table from him is Sofia Martinez. At
[32:25] Speaker 2: the moment, both of them are nude, as is the
[32:27] Speaker 2: custom in this tiny nudist seaside resort town. With your
[32:30] Speaker 2: collar on, you're wearing the most clothing in this room.
[32:33] Speaker 2: The mayor waits, leans forward, his breath, expectant and halting. Meanwhile,
[32:38] Speaker 2: Sophia Martinez focuses her spirit and aligns her energy so
[32:42] Speaker 2: she can connect through the veil to the other side
[32:44] Speaker 2: and communicate with the dead. She takes a deep breath,
[32:48] Speaker 2: the literal inspiration fills her lungs with air and apparently
[32:51] Speaker 2: the words of the mayor's dead father, and then she
[32:54] Speaker 2: speaks moon fearz p deans du moment rips in English, Elizabeth,
[33:02] Speaker 2: which you also speak. You know this means my son,
[33:05] Speaker 2: why do you disturb my rest? But that voice she uses,
[33:08] Speaker 2: if you were not a cat and you possess the
[33:11] Speaker 2: power to laugh, you would burst out laughing. It's this hoarse,
[33:15] Speaker 2: masculine voice. It must hurt her vocal cords to even
[33:18] Speaker 2: do the voice. Meanwhile, the mayor is transfixed because when
[33:22] Speaker 2: she does the voice, somehow her lips don't move. The
[33:25] Speaker 2: voice seems to emerge from her. The Mayor's mesmerized, if
[33:29] Speaker 2: you could, you'd roll your eyes, but being an orange cat,
[33:32] Speaker 2: you just swish your tail. He asks his father, via
[33:35] Speaker 2: the fortune telling ventriloquist, a few more questions. He gasps
[33:38] Speaker 2: at times when Sophia does the voice, as it seems
[33:41] Speaker 2: like his father is there with him. Then comes the
[33:44] Speaker 2: ask that you know is coming. You hear Sophia say in.
[33:47] Speaker 6: The voice, proteges sofia, proteges sofia rendeis de he this
[33:55] Speaker 6: won't be bad.
[33:57] Speaker 2: And again you know what this means in English.
[33:59] Speaker 6: Protect sofia protia, take care of her and her people,
[34:03] Speaker 6: the mayor tells his guiding archangel. Of course, of course
[34:07] Speaker 6: he will do whatever she needs. Since you can't laugh,
[34:10] Speaker 6: you reach forward with a paw and just knock a
[34:12] Speaker 6: candle off the table. And there you go, Elizabeth, you
[34:16] Speaker 6: furry agent of chaos. After just a few seances like
[34:19] Speaker 6: this one, the Mayor was the proverbial clay in her
[34:22] Speaker 6: hands right ready to be molded to her liking, because
[34:26] Speaker 6: the mayor would later confess that he was struck by
[34:28] Speaker 6: what he called her prowess as a clairev lant. Now,
[34:32] Speaker 6: from what I read, she would perform seances in person,
[34:35] Speaker 6: but later, once the long con had matured, she didn't
[34:38] Speaker 6: always have time to get over to his place and
[34:40] Speaker 6: do a full on seance, So the mayor would just
[34:42] Speaker 6: phone her and she'd be on the call with him,
[34:44] Speaker 6: and she would to persuade the mayor to do more
[34:48] Speaker 6: of her bidding, so he would do whatever she asked,
[34:50] Speaker 6: just as long as he could hear the sound.
[34:52] Speaker 2: Of his father's voice. That's crazy. But how does she
[34:54] Speaker 2: do it? How did she do? Yeah, well, you're doing.
[34:57] Speaker 3: It, but I am a man, whoa I gotta start making.
[35:05] Speaker 2: Some I saw your lips moving though.
[35:14] Speaker 3: Now you know I'm still recovering from a cold.
[35:19] Speaker 2: No, it probably didn't help feel well, Yeah, well there
[35:22] Speaker 2: was I found this guy of a French researcher, Antoine Giovanni.
[35:25] Speaker 2: He wrote for the journal Science and v DI Corvettes anyway,
[35:29] Speaker 2: Science and life discoveries. Right, So that's what Sophia Martinez
[35:32] Speaker 2: did with her her voice. He said, quote does not
[35:35] Speaker 2: rely on any extraordinary faculty, but exploit certain characteristics of
[35:38] Speaker 2: our speech production and listening systems. So she's working on
[35:41] Speaker 2: two angles. So what a ventrolquist does that's so remarkable
[35:44] Speaker 2: is how a person quote replaces the movements of the
[35:47] Speaker 2: lips with contractions of the tongue, the soft palette or
[35:50] Speaker 2: the larynx, well, keeping the mouth slightly open, without which
[35:53] Speaker 2: no speech is possible. So you got to keep that
[35:55] Speaker 2: little slight crash. Yeah. So this other key is to
[35:59] Speaker 2: control the pressure in her throat and her chest. You
[36:01] Speaker 2: want to compress the lungs using your diaphragm. Right, This
[36:04] Speaker 2: helps give the illusion of motionless speech. Our brains take
[36:08] Speaker 2: care of the rest. We tell ourselves the story. Oh
[36:09] Speaker 2: my god, they're not moving right. And this is what
[36:12] Speaker 2: the mayor did. He told himself the story and why
[36:14] Speaker 2: it worked so well because he just kept telling himself
[36:16] Speaker 2: story and he wanted it so badly.
[36:17] Speaker 3: Yeah. Well, you know, as Joan Didion wrote, we tell
[36:21] Speaker 3: ourselves stories in order to live.
[36:23] Speaker 2: Very true. She is so accurate. Now the years go on,
[36:27] Speaker 2: this conservative French mayor, he starts telling others in this tiny, idyllic,
[36:30] Speaker 2: nudist town about how he felt about Sophia and her
[36:33] Speaker 2: remarkable skills, how she's so her prowess, her client list,
[36:37] Speaker 2: it starts to grow and grow all of a sudden,
[36:39] Speaker 2: everyone's talking about it. She's milking this whole one by
[36:42] Speaker 2: one mile town. And you know he also said that
[36:45] Speaker 2: he was quite infatuated with her.
[36:47] Speaker 3: Oh yeah, and her amazing knocker.
[36:51] Speaker 2: Is it Booboo's mes monizing. So even though he was
[36:56] Speaker 2: in nudist town and all these sexy, freaky parties are
[36:58] Speaker 2: going on every night, and you know, the mayor said
[37:00] Speaker 2: that their relationship wasn't sexual. This is not what the
[37:03] Speaker 2: local said. They saw. One local said, and I quote
[37:06] Speaker 2: for me, sex is at the haught of this scanda
[37:09] Speaker 2: where there is money involved, and its means sex is
[37:11] Speaker 2: bought of it too. They kind of go together. It's fridge,
[37:14] Speaker 2: all right. So my question is was the reporter nude
[37:17] Speaker 2: asking this question like like did they have to disrobe
[37:20] Speaker 2: to cover the story? The telegraph conservative, well, I don't.
[37:29] Speaker 2: I don't know. That's a good point and thought about that,
[37:30] Speaker 2: but you kind of if you're going to talk to locals,
[37:32] Speaker 2: you need to do man on the st Yeah, like
[37:34] Speaker 2: the telegraph of the British at the Telegraph, which is
[37:37] Speaker 2: a rather conservative pature.
[37:38] Speaker 5: Right.
[37:38] Speaker 2: So and they said, you know that the mayor said
[37:41] Speaker 2: that Sofia was indeed special to him, but not in
[37:43] Speaker 2: the way that was more like, quote, considered her to
[37:46] Speaker 2: be his daughter. Okay, yeah, I don't know. So that's
[37:49] Speaker 2: why he would say he would do anything for her,
[37:50] Speaker 2: And I mean like anything like when she recently remarried
[37:54] Speaker 2: the psychic's third marriage. The mayor paid for the sumptuous affair,
[37:57] Speaker 2: and he walked her down the aisle. Yeah, like a father. Yeah, exactly, yes,
[38:04] Speaker 2: And his lawyer put it, quote nothing was too good
[38:06] Speaker 2: for missus Martinez. And is that one incensed local mentioned
[38:10] Speaker 2: earlier he did it with the French seaside resort town's
[38:12] Speaker 2: money like it was his own. So when that got
[38:15] Speaker 2: out of that changed things. Yeah. So Elizabeth, if you
[38:19] Speaker 2: were a scammer living in a seaside resort town of
[38:21] Speaker 2: nudists and you had the mayor doing your bidding, yeah,
[38:24] Speaker 2: you know, whenever you daddy talked to him, why what
[38:26] Speaker 2: would you ask the mayor to do for you? Will
[38:29] Speaker 2: be your ask? Oh gosh, I don't know. Put some
[38:32] Speaker 2: clothes on, tell these people to get dressed. You're the mayor,
[38:36] Speaker 2: you can do it. I don't know what did she Well,
[38:39] Speaker 2: let's take a little break and after these messages, I
[38:41] Speaker 2: will tell you what she got for doing the boys.
[39:04] Speaker 2: Elizabeth Zaren, we're back. Hello, I put my clothes back on.
[39:07] Speaker 2: If you're happier? Now you're good? So are you?
[39:11] Speaker 3: Are you decent?
[39:12] Speaker 2: Yeah? Producer? Do you can put your glasses back on?
[39:14] Speaker 3: Oh?
[39:14] Speaker 2: Thank god? Now, Sophia, our psychic medium of today, I
[39:20] Speaker 2: asked you what you would ask for? Right before I
[39:23] Speaker 2: tell you what she asked for? Do you have an answer?
[39:25] Speaker 2: Have you thought about what you would ask for from
[39:26] Speaker 2: the mayor of this newest seaside?
[39:29] Speaker 3: I still don't know.
[39:30] Speaker 2: I'm just I can't not a good crimer.
[39:32] Speaker 4: Well, because we go to break you stripped down, you
[39:35] Speaker 4: stand on the table, you help my hands on your
[39:39] Speaker 4: hands and I'm like, I please stop. So how do
[39:42] Speaker 4: I focus?
[39:42] Speaker 2: Now? The interns loved it, so anyway, the psychic medium right,
[39:48] Speaker 2: they received obviously the lush, beautiful wedding, yeah, very sumptu
[39:51] Speaker 2: fair that was paid for by the mayor by the city.
[39:54] Speaker 2: But there was also a veranda for her home that
[39:56] Speaker 2: he had the mayor build onto her home. But the
[39:58] Speaker 2: question of how she did it was what we would
[40:00] Speaker 2: call in America insurance fraud. Oh yeah, because who's going
[40:04] Speaker 2: to pay for it? Not this town. Like obviously, remember
[40:06] Speaker 2: the people were complaining about how the trash wasn't getting
[40:10] Speaker 2: there is not money being spent in other places that
[40:12] Speaker 2: it should have been spent to Sofia.
[40:16] Speaker 3: House.
[40:18] Speaker 2: I read the French paper. I did not think it
[40:21] Speaker 2: was the French.
[40:22] Speaker 7: Paper Medi Libre or medi Libre anyway, it's like, yeah,
[40:27] Speaker 7: so they reported quote during work that took place in
[40:30] Speaker 7: Valet Plague during a large construction site, the terrace of
[40:34] Speaker 7: a restaurant owner was apparently damaged through overcharging for the
[40:38] Speaker 7: repair work to be carried out with the insurer of
[40:40] Speaker 7: the construction company, but also a reduced scale of the
[40:43] Speaker 7: repairs undertaken.
[40:44] Speaker 2: A significant sum was apparently released. It seems to have
[40:47] Speaker 2: been used to cover the construction of the Clairvoyance property.
[40:50] Speaker 2: This is an insurance scam but also an abuse of
[40:53] Speaker 2: corporate assets. The sum that was released is very significant
[40:56] Speaker 2: and does not correspond to the work carried out at
[40:58] Speaker 2: the restaurant, but more to what was implemented at the Clairvoyance.
[41:02] Speaker 3: I see, yeah, that's that.
[41:05] Speaker 2: So she can get the veranda. Do not repair the restaurant,
[41:08] Speaker 2: but she gets a veranda. Yeah, exactly, Yeah, so beyond
[41:12] Speaker 2: the construction pod. Sophie also finessed the mayor into getting
[41:14] Speaker 2: her jacuzzi hot tub. Yeah, because you know sometimes you
[41:18] Speaker 2: need one to sip off there. Now. She also arranged
[41:21] Speaker 2: for the mayor to buy her airline tickets for her
[41:23] Speaker 2: and her family too far away dreamy destinations like French,
[41:27] Speaker 2: Polynesia and Thailand.
[41:28] Speaker 3: Oh wow.
[41:29] Speaker 2: Now all told the mayor and Bezel nearly three hundred
[41:32] Speaker 2: thousand euros over a four year period of time. Wow.
[41:35] Speaker 2: The funds to his fortune teller whoa not only that sop.
[41:38] Speaker 2: He also arranged for the mayor to get her a
[41:39] Speaker 2: car to drop off and pick up her daughter at school,
[41:42] Speaker 2: all paid for by the seasward resort town. She had
[41:45] Speaker 2: the mayor hire five of her family members her jobs
[41:47] Speaker 2: in the city. We had no show jobs. Yeah. The
[41:49] Speaker 2: mayor hired her daughter at his office on probably a
[41:51] Speaker 2: no show job. He hired her new husband as the
[41:53] Speaker 2: technical director for the town. He hired a friend of
[41:56] Speaker 2: hers to run the toll gate. The tourists had to
[41:58] Speaker 2: pass her to enter the nasty seasiders. Yes, so I
[42:01] Speaker 2: feel that I have to say that from everything I read,
[42:03] Speaker 2: there was indeed no romantic aspect to this story. I
[42:06] Speaker 2: could be wrong about that, Yeah, but his lawyer denied it.
[42:08] Speaker 2: Her lawyer denied it. The two of them denied it.
[42:11] Speaker 2: He walked her down the aisle. You know. It does
[42:13] Speaker 2: seem like he was more infatuated in a sense of
[42:15] Speaker 2: she makes my daddy noises. So it's France, you know,
[42:20] Speaker 2: and it is home of them in Najatua in the afternoon,
[42:22] Speaker 2: tryst with your lover. We cannot look past the idea,
[42:25] Speaker 2: and it's hardly hard to believe. There may not have
[42:27] Speaker 2: been no hanky panky, even initially, especially in a new
[42:30] Speaker 2: dist town. But whatever. The locals really are fixated on this.
[42:34] Speaker 2: They were convinced there was a lot of them, at
[42:35] Speaker 2: least from what I read, or convinced that it was
[42:37] Speaker 2: all about sex or possibly love. Yeah. But they also
[42:40] Speaker 2: didn't want to blame the mayor, so it said they
[42:42] Speaker 2: blamed her.
[42:43] Speaker 3: Oh well, yeah, as.
[42:45] Speaker 2: One local recounted, quote, I like Zime. He has been
[42:48] Speaker 2: good to me. He was tricked. Maybe he was in
[42:51] Speaker 2: loveless hair.
[42:52] Speaker 3: Well it does actually so, I mean he's the victim.
[42:54] Speaker 2: Yeah, so there was someone else in town who might
[42:56] Speaker 2: have been worried that the mayor was falling in love
[42:58] Speaker 2: with the fortune telling Ventriloquist, it was, namely the mayor's wife.
[43:02] Speaker 2: I was going to say, Geraldine, Oh, poor Geraldine. Right,
[43:07] Speaker 2: So in October twenty twenty three, she went to the
[43:10] Speaker 2: police and told them she believed that her husband was
[43:12] Speaker 2: breaking the law for the sake of his newest psychic medium. Now,
[43:15] Speaker 2: working off this tip from the wife, the police spring
[43:18] Speaker 2: into action. Right, we have nothing to do here, so
[43:21] Speaker 2: they set up a wiretap. They began to record conversations
[43:23] Speaker 2: between the mayor and his favorite soothsayer. They record these
[43:26] Speaker 2: for months. Right, the police listened into the calls. The
[43:30] Speaker 2: officers are amazed by what Sophia is doing. Right, not
[43:34] Speaker 2: the long Con, Right, that's kind of run of the mill.
[43:36] Speaker 2: But they just couldn't believe the voice. They were here, right,
[43:39] Speaker 2: the cops doubted themselves and what they knew to be true.
[43:43] Speaker 2: The voice was that's powerful. Yeah. After a few months
[43:46] Speaker 2: of listening in on the Long Con, in March of
[43:48] Speaker 2: twenty twenty four, the French police finally set up a
[43:50] Speaker 2: raid at the mayor's office. Roughly twenty judicial police from
[43:53] Speaker 2: outside the area come rushing in for the nearby Montpellier.
[43:57] Speaker 3: Yeah, did they have to take their clothes off.
[43:59] Speaker 2: To come in? I think that the cops they can
[44:01] Speaker 2: qualify as workers. They have to, so they came in
[44:04] Speaker 2: when they did the police actions, that'd be great, though.
[44:06] Speaker 2: Twenty cops set the door of the town. They're stripping
[44:11] Speaker 2: down and putting everything in a little bit. Other cops,
[44:13] Speaker 2: the mustaches. On Tuesday morning, the French investigators they raid
[44:18] Speaker 2: the mayor's office, other locals, the local cops, they go
[44:21] Speaker 2: to his house, they go to the helm of Sofia Martinez,
[44:23] Speaker 2: they arrest everybody. Doesn't take much digging to find evidence
[44:26] Speaker 2: of the mayor's embezzlement, the fraud, the insurance scamming. But
[44:30] Speaker 2: it wasn't just him because obviously he's criminally implicated his partners.
[44:33] Speaker 2: So yeah, he found some people who've been taking bribes.
[44:36] Speaker 2: There's the construction company that's in on the insurance scam. Right,
[44:39] Speaker 2: So this is when all hell breaks loose in this sleepy,
[44:42] Speaker 2: little sexy, freaked at eastas Side resort town. So at
[44:46] Speaker 2: this point, right we've got the cops. They've run their
[44:48] Speaker 2: wire tap, they've been listening for months, they got all
[44:50] Speaker 2: the evidence they need, right, but yet they're still beguiled
[44:53] Speaker 2: by Sophia and her magical ventriloquism act. And so when
[44:56] Speaker 2: they raid the mayor's office and they arrest her and
[44:59] Speaker 2: they arrest him him, they're going, okay, tell us all
[45:01] Speaker 2: the story. They separate out everybody, right, So they got questions,
[45:04] Speaker 2: and their questions are essentially, is the mayo guilty or
[45:07] Speaker 2: is he just dumb? Right? Well, Sophia really channeling the
[45:11] Speaker 2: dead father? And the does she a natural voice down
[45:14] Speaker 2: and to just got stuck to the felonious skills?
[45:17] Speaker 3: I think I could answer all of those for.
[45:19] Speaker 2: Them right now. So news also breaks with the arrest
[45:22] Speaker 2: because it's big news. They go into the mayor's office,
[45:24] Speaker 2: all these judicial cops, they pull them out. So this
[45:26] Speaker 2: conservative mayor gets attacked immediately by his fellow conservatives who
[45:30] Speaker 2: tried to climb over his wrecked mayoral career. And then
[45:33] Speaker 2: his main rival was this man named Fabian Derasano. Right,
[45:37] Speaker 2: he's from the new far right Marine Marine Lapane Party
[45:43] Speaker 2: National Party. So what are all these conservative politicians doing
[45:47] Speaker 2: in a new just freaked out eas seaside resort town.
[45:49] Speaker 2: Right to our American political sensibilities. This may not job
[45:53] Speaker 2: in Europe. It makes perfect sense. But I mean he's
[45:55] Speaker 2: right out in the open. I mean they're not like
[45:56] Speaker 2: hiding here. They may get caught.
[45:58] Speaker 3: Well, yeah, because we've got the weird puritanical Yeah, the
[46:01] Speaker 3: whole moral hypocrisy, y puritanical.
[46:04] Speaker 2: So this far right mayoral rival of this newdest seaside
[46:07] Speaker 2: beach Town Fabian Verrasano, He says of the recently conned mayor, quote,
[46:13] Speaker 2: he can be generous in love with lots of different women.
[46:15] Speaker 2: That's his personal life. But using the attack SPA's money,
[46:19] Speaker 2: that is a different story. He has made the mockery
[46:22] Speaker 2: out of hometown. I don't know how that's possible. So
[46:28] Speaker 2: he falls out with the calls for the bear to
[46:31] Speaker 2: step aside and to resign. It's a problem with that, Elizabeth,
[46:33] Speaker 2: because under local French law, this mayor doesn't have to resign. Yeah,
[46:37] Speaker 2: even if he's behind bars. So really yeah, the law
[46:40] Speaker 2: professor Sebastian Danija, he explained it this way. He said,
[46:43] Speaker 2: quote theoretically he can be in prison and remain mayor
[46:46] Speaker 2: of Ogda and president of the urban community. No one
[46:48] Speaker 2: can force him. And as long as he's not deprived
[46:50] Speaker 2: of his civil rights, and only the judge can ultimately
[46:53] Speaker 2: do that. The judge would have to see hear her
[46:56] Speaker 2: whole case and whatever. So until that happens, he stays
[47:00] Speaker 2: the mayor. And so what that means is he's there
[47:04] Speaker 2: doing mayor business, like having the weekly town council meeting,
[47:07] Speaker 2: and he's in prison. He's in the behind bars. He's like, yeah,
[47:10] Speaker 2: come to my cell. You guys sit on the other
[47:12] Speaker 2: side of the bars. Let's do this. So anyway, after
[47:15] Speaker 2: these raids, the arrests, the mayor, the fortune telling ventriloquists,
[47:18] Speaker 2: they all get they're all on police custody, as I said, right,
[47:20] Speaker 2: and the police also said they've been listening and they're
[47:24] Speaker 2: just so like struck by the voice. Right. So they
[47:26] Speaker 2: once they have Sophia and custody, the first thing that
[47:28] Speaker 2: they want is like, to the voice, the voice, Come on,
[47:31] Speaker 2: do the voice for us to do it? Just do it.
[47:36] Speaker 2: It's like the one of the Benny Jesuits from Doomed.
[47:38] Speaker 2: Do the voice. So she does the voice for the cops, right.
[47:42] Speaker 2: The cops are floored. They are literally speechless watching her
[47:45] Speaker 2: do it. Apparently, from what I can tell from this story,
[47:47] Speaker 2: French people are very impressed by ventriloquism.
[47:50] Speaker 3: Oh really, they're.
[47:50] Speaker 2: Just like, their lips are not moving. Where is this coming?
[47:54] Speaker 2: Pick up? Shake out? So, I don't know. One local
[47:58] Speaker 2: cop told the press that what he witnessed white and
[48:00] Speaker 2: he heard. He said, it was astonishing. This is like
[48:03] Speaker 2: what I would expect children to say about this. Right,
[48:05] Speaker 2: these are the cops, the tectives investigator, I know, right,
[48:12] Speaker 2: God bless he doesn't say oh well, yet I feel
[48:16] Speaker 2: what he's saying. So this other cop describes a voice
[48:19] Speaker 2: as quote masculine sounding, calm and husky. So they're like, yeah,
[48:24] Speaker 2: it's like Kathleen Turner voice, like Kim Carnes. I don't know. So,
[48:28] Speaker 2: after this demonstration, the French cops have all sorts of
[48:30] Speaker 2: questions for Sophia. They play a tape of her doing
[48:34] Speaker 2: the voice over the phone. They play it for the mayor. Right, so,
[48:36] Speaker 2: after they interrogate her and they have her do the
[48:38] Speaker 2: voice and all that, and they recorded all this, they
[48:40] Speaker 2: go over to the mayor and they're trying to tell
[48:41] Speaker 2: him and he won't believe that she's not channeling his father.
[48:46] Speaker 2: So and I don't know. I don't think he's just
[48:48] Speaker 2: buyer's remore or a lack of buyer's remorse, you know,
[48:50] Speaker 2: even Dunny Krueger, all those types of things where a
[48:52] Speaker 2: person just refuses to believe that the past and the
[48:55] Speaker 2: future don't connect. Right, He's like, what are you talking
[48:57] Speaker 2: about here? I am she's all this time, know that's
[49:00] Speaker 2: been my father. They're like, oh, seriously, she's doing it. Yeah, yeah,
[49:03] Speaker 2: and they're like okay, well, so the cops then have
[49:06] Speaker 2: to play an actual video of the interrogation so he can.
[49:10] Speaker 3: See doing this, and it just fractures him.
[49:15] Speaker 2: And then finally he's like, man, so he realizes like
[49:19] Speaker 2: he's been coned. Right. The French newspaper Media Libre, they
[49:23] Speaker 2: reported Sophia told the cops quote, I knew I was
[49:25] Speaker 2: being wiretapped, but I cannot stop talking in death voice.
[49:29] Speaker 2: I've entered into a rope lay and I can't get
[49:31] Speaker 2: out of it, like someone who drinks and can't stop.
[49:34] Speaker 2: So now she has a drunk on her own power.
[49:37] Speaker 3: I know how that goes though.
[49:38] Speaker 4: You start saying something as a joke and then you
[49:40] Speaker 4: can't stop saying, oh, yeah, you.
[49:42] Speaker 2: Got a couple, I got a budget. So the mayor,
[49:46] Speaker 2: you know, he's been a mayor for twenty three years.
[49:48] Speaker 2: That's why people are like, I can't believe it. You know,
[49:50] Speaker 2: he blows all of this up just for somebody who's
[49:53] Speaker 2: going to pretend to be his daddy. That's why he
[49:55] Speaker 2: did it. They weren't even doing the boom boom man.
[49:58] Speaker 2: On March twenty first right is of twenty twenty four,
[50:01] Speaker 2: last year, the mayor makes his first appearance in court
[50:04] Speaker 2: right on charges of quote, illegal interest taking and corruption.
[50:08] Speaker 2: He tells the judge quote, since I found out that
[50:10] Speaker 2: this voice was a hoax, I've been stunned. I regret
[50:14] Speaker 2: if I've committed in the wrongdoing, I would like to
[50:16] Speaker 2: add it in this case, I am first and foremost
[50:19] Speaker 2: the victim. An entire city will suffer.
[50:22] Speaker 3: Wow.
[50:23] Speaker 2: So yeah, he tries to plead like oops, yeah, and
[50:26] Speaker 2: some of his friends who he leaned on to do
[50:27] Speaker 2: favors for his fortune, telling Ventriloquist to Medium, they get
[50:31] Speaker 2: dragged into this fire. So now they've got to get
[50:33] Speaker 2: themselves out. So there's like the construction company. Two executives
[50:37] Speaker 2: from the construction company. They get indicted for the insurance
[50:39] Speaker 2: fraud and corruption and so forth, because they're taking public funds.
[50:42] Speaker 2: It's all bad and also there's forged documents. That's another crime. Yeah.
[50:47] Speaker 2: So in Sofia, where is she? She's in detention, right,
[50:50] Speaker 2: so she gets sent to an all women's facility, but
[50:52] Speaker 2: then she has to be removed from that because her
[50:54] Speaker 2: fellow inmates they all attack her because they believe that
[50:57] Speaker 2: she's a witch. So has he placed in protective custody.
[51:01] Speaker 2: Ball she waits.
[51:02] Speaker 3: Justine with two of the voice in jail.
[51:05] Speaker 2: Yeah, she the voice and they were like no. So
[51:10] Speaker 2: her lawyer says that that he tried to excuse what
[51:14] Speaker 2: she was doing. He goes into the court and she's like,
[51:16] Speaker 2: you know, you have to understand, Uh, my client, she's
[51:18] Speaker 2: a witch, right, and so or maybe she thinks she's
[51:21] Speaker 2: a witch. People think she's a witch. This guy thinks
[51:23] Speaker 2: she's a witch. You know, so some people, smart people
[51:26] Speaker 2: believe she's a witch. So therefore throw the case out
[51:28] Speaker 2: and the lawyer and this is how the lawyer put
[51:30] Speaker 2: in Elizabeth. She is admitted betraying the mayo's confidence, but
[51:33] Speaker 2: it's not the case of manipulation because she has owned
[51:36] Speaker 2: up to what she did, and other clients, including doctors
[51:40] Speaker 2: and architects, said that she had mystical powers. So she
[51:45] Speaker 2: you know, if you can an architect in France, that's
[51:47] Speaker 2: like it's clear high bar. Y'are on a case closed
[51:52] Speaker 2: no in a sense then, so if you're wondering why
[51:56] Speaker 2: her lawyer might make that case, right and don't be
[51:58] Speaker 2: a legal hater, Elizabeth, Okay, he did have evidence, actual evidence,
[52:01] Speaker 2: he said, and I quote she revealed the details about
[52:04] Speaker 2: their lives that no one else knew about. So boom,
[52:08] Speaker 2: what are you gonna say about that?
[52:09] Speaker 3: Don't you feel so small town?
[52:13] Speaker 2: I don't believe that. I don't believe it's true. Personally,
[52:15] Speaker 2: that's simple. But so via she knows that sees these
[52:18] Speaker 2: secrets that doctors and architects are impressed by, but the
[52:21] Speaker 2: judge not so impressed. So again you're on the clearly
[52:25] Speaker 2: my life is in a sense, she is a witch.
[52:27] Speaker 2: And so the justice though, of this side, it is
[52:30] Speaker 2: a strange too, I admit that. But the justice is
[52:33] Speaker 2: kind of strange too, because it's like everything's about like
[52:36] Speaker 2: if you admit it, and we will throw away the case, right,
[52:38] Speaker 2: because they really want the mayor to stop being Zi Maya,
[52:41] Speaker 2: that's the thing. So he's like, no, I am still Maya.
[52:45] Speaker 2: No get to me, lunch or whatever. So the ventril
[52:49] Speaker 2: she's locked up, she separated. The mayor is still in town. Right,
[52:52] Speaker 2: and also, by the way, the ventriloquist, her daughter gets
[52:56] Speaker 2: locked up. Her close friend who ran the toll door gate,
[52:58] Speaker 2: she gets locked up, her third hug he gets locked up.
[53:01] Speaker 2: So out of interest for them, she's like, okay, she
[53:03] Speaker 2: starts confessing I did this, I did that. They start
[53:06] Speaker 2: getting released, right, So that's that's a happy thing for everybody.
[53:09] Speaker 2: But the trouble for all of this is that the
[53:11] Speaker 2: scandal was bad for the vibes of this tourist rich
[53:14] Speaker 2: nudist calling you. They're like, people don't want to come
[53:16] Speaker 2: here and get naked if they think we have no
[53:17] Speaker 2: good mayor and our cups of fools. So justice has
[53:22] Speaker 2: to be swift. They want this story to go away. Yeah,
[53:24] Speaker 2: so they start leaning on them, right, So they need
[53:26] Speaker 2: to get the mayor to quit his job, and he's like, no,
[53:28] Speaker 2: when is the next election two more years? Yeah, And
[53:32] Speaker 2: so his co conspirators from the construction company, though, they're like,
[53:35] Speaker 2: they're not so blase about power. They pay their fifty
[53:37] Speaker 2: thousand year ob bail. They get released. So now this
[53:40] Speaker 2: case starts to go away a little because we don't
[53:41] Speaker 2: have updates on them in the press anymore. That's good. Right.
[53:44] Speaker 2: In April, after waging a long fight to keep his gig,
[53:47] Speaker 2: the mayor announces that he will give way to ZIP people.
[53:50] Speaker 2: He resigns his being mayor in May, right, and he
[53:53] Speaker 2: announces he'll do it, and then he does it in May.
[53:55] Speaker 2: And in June they let him out. He gets released
[53:57] Speaker 2: from jail. They're like, okay, fair enough, and so that's it.
[53:59] Speaker 2: That's all the time he has to do. So that's
[54:01] Speaker 2: enough time behind bosh for him. They decide they put
[54:03] Speaker 2: him on probation. He's released, he's barred from leaving France.
[54:06] Speaker 2: You can't leave France. And he's forbidden from doing any
[54:08] Speaker 2: contact with Sofia. He's like, no more talking to your
[54:10] Speaker 2: daddy through hell, right, and so then also he can't
[54:13] Speaker 2: talk to the construction company buddies.
[54:14] Speaker 3: But he's very limited exactly.
[54:17] Speaker 2: Just kind of go on from naked, naked and humbled.
[54:21] Speaker 2: So Sophia nor obviously your friend, her daughter, husband, they've
[54:24] Speaker 2: all been released from jail, but Sofia, she's still in
[54:26] Speaker 2: jail come June. She's locked up. She's doing advoice to
[54:30] Speaker 2: try to get it out, it's not working. By the
[54:31] Speaker 2: end of the month, she's finally said to be free
[54:34] Speaker 2: because they decide, okay, that's been enough time. But for
[54:37] Speaker 2: her probation, they send her a halfway house in Strasbourg,
[54:41] Speaker 2: which is Frances just across the German border and just
[54:45] Speaker 2: across the Swiss border as well. It's just really the
[54:50] Speaker 2: name strasburgs like, is this really a French time? Do
[54:54] Speaker 2: you guys get this in the war? And so anyway,
[54:56] Speaker 2: she's forbidden from practicing witchcraft, esotericism, no alternative meta send,
[55:00] Speaker 2: no other form of woo woo treatments of any kind.
[55:03] Speaker 2: And so there you go, justice meeted out because and
[55:07] Speaker 2: the story went away, and the tourist down was happy,
[55:09] Speaker 2: and they took the clothes off and they said, so
[55:11] Speaker 2: Elizabeth Strange, a true story of a fortune telling ventriloqust
[55:14] Speaker 2: to condom mayor of a French nudist seaside resort to
[55:17] Speaker 2: there you go by thinking it was dear dead departed
[55:21] Speaker 2: amazing any ridiculous takeaways here?
[55:24] Speaker 4: You know, I think it's really interesting where the mayor
[55:27] Speaker 4: wanted so badly to connect with his father, and you know,
[55:32] Speaker 4: you have that trauma and that loss, and especially I
[55:35] Speaker 4: don't know how fresh.
[55:36] Speaker 2: It was for him. If this was a recent loss.
[55:39] Speaker 2: It's obviously extending years.
[55:41] Speaker 3: I mean, but it'd be like at the beginning when
[55:43] Speaker 3: he first.
[55:43] Speaker 2: Starts talking like, yes, it is a recent loss.
[55:45] Speaker 3: Yeah, and so you think, like that's when you're you're
[55:48] Speaker 3: most desperate in your grief.
[55:50] Speaker 2: Yeah. She's weaponizing his grief, Yeah exactly.
[55:52] Speaker 4: And so he he's convinced himself that this is true
[55:55] Speaker 4: and it has become so important to him, and that
[55:58] Speaker 4: you can then, when you have the kind of of driver,
[56:01] Speaker 4: you can rationalize anything. So he's rationalizing all of his
[56:06] Speaker 4: poor choices and his criminal choicest Yeah exactly. And it
[56:10] Speaker 4: is almost sort of like he is obviously the victim.
[56:13] Speaker 4: He did dumb stuff, but like I really feel for
[56:17] Speaker 4: him and.
[56:17] Speaker 3: In what his grief did to him and her manipulation
[56:22] Speaker 3: of it to exploitation.
[56:24] Speaker 2: Yeah exactly.
[56:25] Speaker 3: Saron, what's your ridiculous takeaway?
[56:27] Speaker 2: Zim boobies? While she's mismerizing him with your voice, I mean,
[56:31] Speaker 2: you were watching a ventriloquist. He's not moving their mouth,
[56:34] Speaker 2: but they're like jiggling all over the place. It's just
[56:36] Speaker 2: hilarious to me.
[56:37] Speaker 3: Well, I mean then you can really see if they're
[56:39] Speaker 3: breathing or not. There's no clothing to mask it, like
[56:43] Speaker 3: if you're wearing like And then if she rips a
[56:46] Speaker 3: fart right on the Nauga High, there's no clothes to muffle.
[56:49] Speaker 2: It's just a sharp They're in her house, so she
[56:52] Speaker 2: may have been wearing a robe. I have no idea.
[56:54] Speaker 2: I just like picture. She's naked just everywhere, Yeah, exactly everywhere, and.
[56:59] Speaker 4: He's just mesmerized, not only by her rack looking and
[57:05] Speaker 4: seeing that she's not moving and breathing.
[57:07] Speaker 2: Like you know, crowd. So my ridiculous takeaway, Elizabeth, is
[57:13] Speaker 2: that perfect? Now, if you you'd like, we can wash
[57:17] Speaker 2: this all down with the talkback. I got a talkback
[57:20] Speaker 2: for us.
[57:20] Speaker 8: Yeah, in fact, tonight I have two, and I'm going
[57:22] Speaker 8: to tell you why.
[57:23] Speaker 2: Why, Oh my god, I went get.
[57:36] Speaker 5: This.
[57:36] Speaker 8: First one came in January thirty first, not too long ago,
[57:42] Speaker 8: and it is tipping off the story that Elizabeth told
[57:45] Speaker 8: at the top of this episode. So I want to
[57:47] Speaker 8: give credit where credit is due to this talkback contributor.
[57:51] Speaker 8: And then I'm going to give another one at the tailor.
[57:56] Speaker 8: I certify, as a matter of law, I did not
[57:58] Speaker 8: share this with Elizabeth.
[58:00] Speaker 5: Ahead of time, Zarn Elizabeth, Producer D interns that may
[58:07] Speaker 5: or may not be dogs. I have a ridiculous crime
[58:09] Speaker 5: to share with you. So my husband and I were
[58:11] Speaker 5: texting back and florith. I was at work telling him
[58:13] Speaker 5: how much I loved and missed him, and he was
[58:16] Speaker 5: telling me, yeah, yeah, I love you too. But first
[58:18] Speaker 5: check out this news article I found about a woman
[58:21] Speaker 5: who was harassing her ex's partner with fart videos. They
[58:26] Speaker 5: called them fart selfies in the news article, and it
[58:29] Speaker 5: was ridiculous.
[58:32] Speaker 3: Part selfie start selfies is so good and so gross. Yes,
[58:36] Speaker 3: all right, let's hear our second one.
[58:38] Speaker 2: Number two.
[58:39] Speaker 8: You know what's ridiculous is getting all dressed up for
[58:42] Speaker 8: the Purpies and then there's no Purpies this year.
[58:46] Speaker 2: I am a sad person. Well, it got good news,
[58:49] Speaker 2: and we waited this year for award season so that
[58:52] Speaker 2: the Purpies could be properly framed amongst all of the
[58:56] Speaker 2: mountaintop accolades, the egots of it all. Yes, so we
[58:59] Speaker 2: hope to be in there, the pagotcotts. Yes. So yeah,
[59:05] Speaker 2: there you go, Elizabeth and Producer D. That's all the
